1. Understanding the variations and sources of CO, C2H2, C2H6, H2CO, and HCN columns based on 3 years of new ground-based Fourier transform infrared measurements at Xianghe, China

Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO), acetylene (C2H2), ethane (C2H6), formaldehyde (H2CO), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) are important trace gases in the atmosphere. They are highly related to biomass burning, fossil fuel combustion, and biogenic emissions globally, affecting air quality and climate change. However, the variations and correlations among these species are not well known in northern China due to limited measurements. In June 2018, we installed a new ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer (Bruker IFS 125HR) recording mid-infrared high spectral resolution solar-absorption spectra at Xianghe (39.75∘ N, 116.96∘ E), China. In this study, we use the latest SFIT4 code, together with advanced a priori profiling and spectroscopy, to retrieve these five species from the FTIR spectra measured between June 2018 and November 2021. The retrieval strategies, retrieval information and retrieval uncertainties are presented and discussed. For the first time, the time series, variations, and correlations of these five species are analyzed at a typical polluted site in northern China. The seasonal variations in C2H2 and C2H6 total columns show a maximum in winter–spring and a minimum in autumn, whereas the seasonal variations in H2CO and HCN show a maximum in summer and a minimum in winter. Unlike the other four species, the FTIR measurements show that there is almost no seasonal variation in the CO column. The correlation coefficients (R) between the synoptic variations in CO and the other four species (C2H2, C2H6, H2CO, and HCN) are between 0.68 and 0.80, indicating that they are affected by common sources. Using the FLEXPART model backward simulations and satellite fire measurements, we find that the variations in CO, C2H2, C2H6, and H2CO columns are mainly dominated by the local anthropogenic emissions, while HCN column observed at Xianghe is a good tracer to identify fire emissions.

2. A MODEL TO SIMULATE THE RADIATIVE TRANSFER OF FLUORESCENCE IN A LEAF

Abstract

Light is reflected, transmitted and absorbed by green leaves. Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) is the signal emitted by chlorophyll molecules in the leaf after the absorption of light. ChlF can be used as a direct probe of the functional status of photosynthetic machinery because of its close relationship with photosynthesis. The scattering, absorbing, and emitting properties of leaves are spectrally dependent, which can be simulated by modeling leaf-level fluorescence. In this paper, we proposed a Monte-Carlo (MC) model to simulate the radiative transfer of photons in the leaf. Results show that typical leaf fluorescence spectra can be properly simulated, with two peaks centered at around 685 nm in the red and 740 nm in the far-red regions. By analysing the sensitivity of the input parameters, we found the MC model can well simulate their influence on the emitted fluorescence. Meanwhile we compared results simulated by MC model with those by the Fluspect model. Generally they agree well in the far-red region but deviate in the red region.

3. Impacts of stopper type and material on the broadband characteristics and performance of energy harvesters

Abstract

Exploiting nonlinear impact force induced by a stopper has been widely proposed to broaden the bandwidth of energy harvesters from mechanical vibrations, but the previous studies just directly employed the stopper and did not consider the effect of inherent factors of the stopper like its type and material. This letter devotes to efficiently utilize the stopper to broaden the resonance region of the energy harvester mainly from perspective of stopper type and material. Four stopper types are taken into account including the stopper with rigid and soft materials and the spring stopper. Experimental results show that two sides followed stopper type can greatly increase the bandwidth which is much better than other considered types. Importantly, using the stopper with soft materials or the spring stopper is followed by a wider resonance region and a higher output voltage of the energy harvester compared to that with rigid materials. Moreover, agreements between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements indicate the feasibility of using the trilinear spring model to describe the nonlinear impact force which is determined by stopper type and material. The present study delivers to essentially improve the output performance of energy harvesters by selecting the efficient stopper.

Abstract

Introduction The aim of the study was to explore the feasibility of performing sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) using a carbon nanoparticle suspension (CNPS) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. Methods Some 152 patients diagnosed with primary breast cancer (cT1-3N0-2M0) were recruited. Patients were divided into two groups according to axillary lymph node (ALN) status after four to six cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. All patients received a CNPS injection, after which SLNB and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) were performed. Results Sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) of 143 patients were identified; with an accuracy rate of 94.4% and a false-negative rate of 9.9%. Group A included 67 patients, and the detection, accuracy and false-negative rates within this group were 95.5%, 96.9% and 6.7%, respectively. The corresponding rates for group B (85 patients) were 92.9%, 92.4% and 11.8%, respectively. Conclusions CNPS is an ideal tracer for improving the detection rate of SLN and can be used to determine SLN status following neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

The parametrically excited instability of the spatially periodic visco-elastomer sandwich plate with supported masses under quadrilateral longitudinal temporal harmonic excitations is studied. The improvability of the parametrically excited instability by periodic distribution parameters is explored. The direct eigenvalue analysis approach for solving the parametrically excited stability problem of the periodic sandwich plate system under longitudinal harmonic excitations is proposed. The spatial periodic distribution of facial layer thickness and core layer modulus of the sandwich plate is considered. The non-linear partial differential equations of longitudinal and transverse coupling motions of the periodic visco-elastomer sandwich plate with supported masses under biaxial longitudinal boundary excitations are derived. The longitudinal displacements of the sandwich plate are separated into two parts and the longitudinal boundary excitations relevant to symmetric part are incorporated into the sandwich plate system. Then the partial differential equations with boundary excitations are converted into parametrically excited system equations and further converted into ordinary differential equations with time-varying parameters, which describe the parametrically excited vibration with multi-mode coupling of the periodic sandwich plate system. The fundamental perturbation solution to the equations is expressed as the product of periodic and exponential parts based on the Floquet theorem. The ordinary differential equations with harmonic parameters are converted into a set of algebraic equations using the harmonic balance method. Then the parametrically excited instability of the periodic sandwich plate system is determined directly by matrix eigenvalues. The overall instability characteristics of parametrically excited vibration with multi-mode coupling of the system under longitudinal harmonic excitations are illustrated by numerical results on unstable regions. The parametrically excited instability can be improved by the spatially periodic distribution of geometrical and physical parameters. The proposed approach is applicable to general sandwich structures with spatial distribution parameters in multi-mode-coupling parametrically excited vibrations for overall instability analysis on continuous frequency band.

20. Leveraging Two-Way Coupled Geomechanics-Dynamic Modelling Workflow in Evaluating Highly Porous and Depleted Carbonate Field for CO2 Injection Site

Abstract

ABSTRACT: In the pursuit of net-zero carbon by the year 2050, the PETRONAS Group Research & Technology has executed CO2 storage studies incorporating laboratories results as well as with advanced simulation modelling prior to project execution for a case study in the year 2025. This paper is intended to highlight the advanced two-way coupled geomechanics-dynamic modelling workflow involving rock property updating and simultaneous history match for both reservoir simulation and geomechanics modelling. The purpose of this extensive coupled modelling workflow is to evaluate the potential challenges and risk of CO2 injection and storage including the impact of reservoir compaction towards final CO2 storage capacity, fault reactivation, caprock integrity and final injection limit. Advanced numerical coupled modelling for high porosity and highly compactable reservoir capturing the complex dynamic flow of the actual field conditions is challenging and requires a lot of attention to detail. Integration of the various disciplines such as geomechanics, reservoir engineering, geology and geophysics are crucial for the success of this project. This paper will also highlight the novel workflow, challenges and lessons learnt from the advanced coupled geomechanics dynamic modelling which can be applied in other similar projects. 1. INTRODUCTION The case study field was discovered in 1972 and production started in 1996. It is a carbonate gas field with about 350 ft of hydrocarbon interval and a thin oil rim of about 30 ft in thickness. The porosity ranges from 31 to 40% and extensive compaction has occurred with 700 psi pressure depletion throughout the gas production phase. Therefore, a Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor have been installed since the year 2000 to monitor the seabed subsidence due to field production. As the field has been depleted, it was identified as one of the potential CO2 storage sites which require an extensive subsurface evaluation before field injection.

22. B-Cell–Derived TGF-β1 Inhibits Osteogenesis and Contributes to Bone Loss in Periodontitis

Abstract

B cells play a vital role in the elimination of periodontal pathogens, the regulation of the immune response, and the induction of tissue destruction. However, the role of B cells in the dysfunction of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation to osteoblasts in periodontitis (PD) has been poorly studied. Here we show that the frequency of CD45−CD105+CD73+ MSCs in inflamed periodontal tissues is significantly decreased in patients with PD compared with that of healthy controls. CD19+ B cells dominate the infiltrated immune cells in periodontal tissues of patients with PD. Besides, B-cell depletion therapy reduces the alveolar bone loss in a ligature-induced murine PD model. B cells from PD mice express a high level of TGF-β1 and inhibit osteoblast differentiation by upregulating p-Smad2/3 expression and downregulating Runx2 expression. The inhibitory effect of PD B cells on osteoblast differentiation is reduced by TGF-β1 neutralization or Smad2/3 inhibitor. Importantly, B-cell–specific knockout of TGF-β1 in PD mice significantly increases the number of CD45−CD105+Sca1+ MSCs, ALP-positive osteoblast activity, and alveolar bone volume but decreases TRAP-positive osteoclast activity compared with that from control littermates. Lastly, CD19+CD27+CD38− memory B cells dominate the B-cell infiltrates in periodontal tissues from both patients with PD and patients with PD after initial periodontal therapy. Memory B cells in periodontal tissues of patients with PD express a high level of TGF-β1 and inhibit MSC differentiation to osteoblasts. Thus, TGF-β1 produced by B cells may contribute to alveolar bone loss in periodontitis, in part, by suppressing osteoblast activity.

Abstract

We present deeper Chandra observations for weak-line quasars (WLQs) in a representative sample that previously had limited X-ray constraints, and perform X-ray photometric analyses to reveal the full range of X-ray properties of WLQs. Only 5 of the 32 WLQs included in this representative sample remain X-ray undetected after these observations, and a stacking analysis shows that these 5 have an average X-ray weakness factor of > 85. One of the WLQs in the sample that was known to have extreme X-ray variability, SDSS J1539+3954, exhibited dramatic X-ray variability again: it changed from an X-ray normal state to an X-ray weak state within ~ 3 months in the rest frame. This short timescale for an X-ray flux variation by a factor of $\gtrsim$ 9 further supports the thick disk and outflow (TDO) model proposed to explain the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of WLQs. The overall distribution of the X-ray-to-optical properties of WLQs suggests that the TDO has an average covering factor of the X-ray emitting region of ~ 0.5, and the column density of the TDO can range from $N_{\rm H}$ $\sim 10^{23-24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$ to $N_{\rm H}$ $\gtrsim 10^{24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$, which leads to different levels of absorption and Compton reflection (and/or scattering) among WLQs., 16 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

Dual-frequency excitation of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactors, where the plasma is generated by a low-frequency (LF) source and modulated by a radio-frequency (RF) source, have been widely adopted in the low-pressure regime. However, the impacts of the RF voltage and LF voltage amplitudes on the plasma parameters, including the spatiotemporal distributions of ion and electron densities, electron dynamics, and gas temperatures, remain poorly understood in the atmospheric pressure regime. The present work addresses this issue by conducting joint experimental and simulation studies for an atmospheric-pressure 50 kHz/5 MHz dual-frequency driven DBD plasma reactor based on phase-resolved optical emission spectra and a drift–diffusion model. The results demonstrate that the dynamic spatiotemporal behaviors of electrons change dramatically as the voltage of the RF component increases from 50 V to 300 V with the voltage of the LF component fixed at 1 kV. Moreover, the RF component is further demonstrated to modulate other plasma characteristics, such as particle densities, gas temperature, and argon emissions. These results contribute toward the tailoring of the non-equilibrium and nonlinear plasma parameters obtained under atmospheric pressure conditions.

Abstract

Càncer de pulmó; Brigatinib; Estudi ALTA-1L Cáncer de pulmón; Brigatinib; Estudio ALTA-1L Lung cancer; Brigatinib; ALTA-1L study PURPOSE Brigatinib, a next-generation anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitor, demonstrated superior progression-free survival (PFS) and improved health-related quality of life (QoL) versus crizotinib in advanced ALK inhibitor–naive ALK-positive non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at first interim analysis (99 events; median brigatinib follow-up, 11.0 months) in the open-label, phase III ALTA-1L trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02737501). We report results of the second prespecified interim analysis (150 events). METHODS Patients with ALK inhibitor–naive advanced ALK-positive NSCLC were randomly assigned 1:1 to brigatinib 180 mg once daily (7-day lead-in at 90 mg once daily) or crizotinib 250 mg twice daily. The primary end point was PFS as assessed by blinded independent review committee (BIRC). Investigator-assessed efficacy, blood samples for pharmacokinetic assessments, and patient-reported outcomes were also collected. RESULTS Two hundred seventy-five patients were randomly assigned (brigatinib, n = 137; crizotinib, n = 138). With median follow-up of 24.9 months for brigatinib (150 PFS events), brigatinib showed consistent superiority in BIRC-assessed PFS versus crizotinib (hazard ratio [HR], 0.49 [95% CI, 0.35 to 0.68]; log-rank P < .0001; median, 24.0 v 11.0 months). Investigator-assessed PFS HR was 0.43 (95% CI, 0.31 to 0.61; median, 29.4 v 9.2 months). No new safety concerns emerged. Brigatinib delayed median time to worsening of global health status/QoL scores compared with crizotinib (HR, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.49 to 1.00]; log-rank P = .049). Brigatinib daily area under the plasma concentration–time curve was not a predictor of PFS (HR, 1.005 [95% CI, 0.98 to 1.031]; P = .69). CONCLUSION Brigatinib represents a once-daily ALK inhibitor with superior efficacy, tolerability, and QoL over crizotinib, making it a promising first-line treatment of ALK-positive NSCLC. Abstract

Hypervascularity is a main characteristic of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs), and cystic PanNETs (CPanNETs) are unique type of PanNETs in which the microenvironment remains unknown. We aim to compare the micro-vasculature features and immune cell infiltration between CPanNETs and solid PanNETs (SPanNETs). Data of 301 SPanNET and 36 CPanNET patients from a high-volume institution were evaluated. CD4, CD8, CD11c, CD15, CD20, CD68, CD34 and α-SMA expression levels were assessed by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescent double staining. The microvessel density (MVD) and microvessel integrity (MVI) were examined. MVD and MVI expression levels in CPanNETs were significantly higher than those in SPanNETs (p = 0.025 and 0.0092, respectively). CPanNETs had higher proportions of T1 (p = 0.023) and G1 (p = 0.052) than SPanNETs. In SPanNETs, higher MVD occurred in stages T1, N0 and G1 than in the T2/T3, N1 and G2 subgroups. In CPanNETs, CD34-MVD was uncorrelated with the T stage or grade. Higher CD34-MVD, but not MVI, was associated with better DFS (HR 0.3209, 95% CI 0.1259–0.8176, p = 0.004). Abstract

We present Chandra observations of 2106 radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1.799.99% level) between $\alpha_{ox}$ and these emission-line parameters, as well as between $\Delta\alpha_{ox}$ and CIV EW. Slight correlations are found between $\Delta\alpha_{ox}$ and CIV blueshift, MgII EW, and the CIV EW to MgII EW ratio. The best-fit trend in each parameter space is used to compare the X-ray weakness ($\Delta\alpha_{ox}$) and optical/UV emission properties of typical quasars and weak-line quasars (WLQs). The WLQs typically exhibit weaker X-ray emission than predicted by the typical quasar relationships. The best-fit relationships for our typical quasars are consistent with predictions from the disk-wind quasar model. Abstract

With the development of SoC technology, the integration of FPGA+ARM has become the development direction of SoC. For the characteristics of integrated multi-axis motion control and motor drive, this paper selects Xilinx ZYNQ-7020 System-onchip (SOC) with integrated dual-core ARM CPU and FPGA as the hardware platform control chip, an arm core motor drive algorithm. Another ARM core completes the interactive function and motion control, and the FPGA to complete the multi-axis hardware current loop and improve the system bandwidth. The iterative learning control (ILC) technology is widely used in robots to reduce the trajectory error of robots performing repetitive tasks. Using P-type iterative learning ILC combined with feedback control , which can compensate for nonrepeating disturbance. Finally, analysis of experimental results shows that iterative learning control combined with feedback control can significantly improve tracking accuracy.

Abstract

The W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 fields will be two of the LSST Deep Drilling fields, but the availability of spectroscopic redshifts within these two fields is still limited on deg^2 scales. To prepare for future science, we use EAZY to estimate photometric redshifts (photo-zs) in these two fields based on forced-photometry catalogs. Our photo-z catalog consists of ~0.8 million sources covering 4.9 deg^2 in W-CDF-S and ~0.8 million sources covering 3.4 deg^2 in ELAIS-S1, among which there are ~0.6 (W-CDF-S) and ~0.4 (ELAIS-S1) million sources having signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) > 5 detections in more than 5 bands. By comparing photo-zs and available spectroscopic redshifts, we demonstrate the general reliability of our photo-z measurements. Abstract

The ELAIS-S1 field will be an LSST Deep Drilling field, and it also has extensive multiwavelength coverage. To improve the utility of the existing data, we use The Tractor to perform forced-photometry measurements in this field. We compile data in 16 bands from the DeepDrill, VIDEO, DES, ESIS, and VOICE surveys. Using a priori information from the high-resolution fiducial images in VIDEO, we model the images in other bands and generate a forced-photometry catalog. This technique enables consistency throughout different surveys, deblends sources from low-resolution images, extends photometric measurements to a fainter magnitude regime, and improves photometric-redshift estimates. Our catalog contains over 0.8 million sources covering a 3.4 deg2 area in the VIDEO footprint and is available at 10.5281/zenodo.4540178., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Recent studies show that a universal relation between black-hole (BH) growth and stellar mass ($M_\bigstar$) or star formation rate (SFR) is an oversimplification of BH-galaxy co-evolution, and that morphological and structural properties of host galaxies must also be considered. Particularly, a possible connection between BH growth and host-galaxy compactness was identified among star-forming (SF) galaxies.
