Abstract

New thermal storage composites made of graphite and PCM (NaN[O.sub.3]/ KN[O.sub.3] eutectic) have been developed for solar thermal power plants using direct solar steam generation. Those materials, obtained using different elaboration routes (compounding, infiltration, cold compression) and graphite types, are presented with their respective properties (enhanced thermal conductivities, thermal storage capacities, stability) and compared together. Both the laboratory and industrial scales and grades are considered and compared. The infiltration route has been found to be inefficient before the two other ones. Compound composites present isotropic properties and thermal conductivity intensification in the medium range (a factor of 10 for 7 wt % in graphite). Cold compressed composites present highly anisotropic properties and strong intensification in thermal conductivity (a factor of 31 at 200[degrees]C for 20 wt % in graphite). Their melting and solidification temperatures as well as their intrinsic storage capacity are close to the pure salt ones. 32. Compatibility of vegetable oils with solid filler materials for thermocline thermal energy storage systems

Abstract

Compatibility tests involving four vegetable oils and three different solid materials were performed, with a focus on rapeseed oil and quartzite rock. The objective was to verify the relevance of using vegetable oils as heat transfer fluid in concentrated solar power plants with direct thermocline thermal energy storage. First tests consisted in using small crucibles to put in contact rapeseed oil respectively with quartzite, blast furnace slags and alumina for 2160 h and at 210 °C. On a chemical point of view, the oil composition was modified by ageing and contact with solids. However, thermal properties that drive heat transfer (density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity) were not modified. Thermal stability temperature and flash point decreased and a correlation with the index of acidity of the samples has been found. Second set of tests consisted in putting in contact quartzite with rapeseed, palm, soybean and jatropha oils for 720 h and at 210 °C. Results confirmed that index of acidity can be a good indicator of the vegetable oil ageing. From the whole study, no incompatibility has been concluded, but one may recommend a limit value of 25 mg KOH.g−1 for the index of acidity to consider partial replacement of the vegetable heat transfer.

Abstract

Despite the extensive use of 129Xe NMR for characterization of high surface-to-volume porous solids, particularly zeolites, this method has not been widely used to explore the properties of microporous carbon materials. In this study, commercial amorphous carbons of different origin (produced from different precursors) and a series of activated carbons obtained by successive cyclic air oxidation/pyrolysis treatments of a single precursor were examined. Models of 129Xe chemical shift as a function of local Xe density, mean pore size, and temperature are discussed. The virial coefficient arising from binary xenon collisions, σXe-Xe, varied linearly with the mean pore size given by N2 adsorption analysis; σXe-Xe appeared to be a better probe of the mean pore size than the chemical shift extrapolated to zero pressure, σS.
