Chirality is a pervasive form of symmetry that is intimately connected to the physical properties of solids, as well as the chemical and biological activity of molecular systems. However, its control with light is challenging, because inducing chirality in a non-chiral material requires that all mirrors and all roto-inversions be simultaneously broken. Electromagnetic fields exert only oscillatory forces that vanish on average, mostly leading to entropy increase that does not break symmetries, per se. Here, we show that chirality of either handedness can be generated in the non-chiral piezoelectric material BPO$_4$, in which two compensated sub-structures of opposite handedness coexist within the same unit cell. By resonantly driving either one of two orthogonal, doubly degenerate vibrational modes at Terahertz frequency, we rectify the lattice distortion and exert a displacive force onto the crystal. The staggered chirality is in this way uncompensated in either direction, inducing chiral structure with either handedness. Our understanding of quantum materials is commonly based on precise determinations of their electronic spectrum by spectroscopic means, most notably angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both require atomically clean and flat crystal surfaces which traditionally are prepared by in-situ mechanical cleaving in ultrahigh vacuum chambers. We present a new approach that addresses three main issues of the current state-of-the-art methods: 1) Cleaving is a highly stochastic and thus inefficient process; 2) Fracture processes are governed by the bonds in a bulk crystal, and many materials and surfaces simply do not cleave; 3) The location of the cleave is random, preventing data collection at specified regions of interest. Our new workflow is based on Focused Ion Beam (FIB) machining of micro-stress lenses in which shape (rather than crystalline) anisotropy dictates the plane of cleavage, which can be placed at a specific target layer. As proof-of-principle we show ARPES results from micro-cleaves of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ along the ac plane and from two surface orientations of SrTiO$_3$, a notoriously difficult to cleave cubic perovskite.

Strange metals possess highly unconventional transport characteristics, such as a linear-in-temperature ($T$) resistivity, an inverse Hall angle that varies as $T^2$ and a linear-in-field ($H$) magnetoresistance. Identifying the origin of these collective anomalies has proved profoundly challenging, even in materials such as the hole-doped cuprates that possess a simple band structure. The prevailing dogma is that strange metallicity in the cuprates is tied to a quantum critical point at a doping $p*$ inside the superconducting dome. Here, we study the high-field in-plane magnetoresistance of two superconducting cuprate families at doping levels beyond $p*$. At all dopings, the magnetoresistance exhibits quadrature scaling and becomes linear at high $H/T$ ratios. Moreover, its magnitude is found to be much larger than predicted by conventional theory and insensitive to both impurity scattering and magnetic field orientation. These observations, coupled with analysis of the zero-field and Hall resistivities, suggest that despite having a single band, the cuprate strange metal phase hosts two charge sectors, one containing coherent quasiparticles, the other scale-invariant `Planckian' dissipators., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables (including Supplementary Information)

A long-standing theoretical prediction is that in clean, nodal unconventional superconductors the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$, at zero temperature, varies linearly with magnetic field. This non-linear Meissner effect is an equally important manifestation of the nodal state as the well studied linear-in-$T$ dependence of $\lambda$, but has never been convincingly experimentally observed. Here we present measurements of the nodal superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and LaFePO which clearly show this non-linear Meissner effect. We further show how the effect of a small dc magnetic field on $\lambda(T)$ can be used to distinguish gap nodes from non-nodal deep gap minima. Our measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$ suggest that this material has such a non-nodal state.

Zirconium pentatetelluride, ZrTe5, shows remarkable sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure. In this work we address the high-pressure transport and optical properties of this compound, on samples grown by flux and charge vapor transport. The high-pressure resistivity is measured up to 2 GPa, and the infrared transmission up to 9 GPa. The dc conductivity anisotropy is determined using a microstructured sample. Together, the transport and optical measurements allow us to discern band parameters with and without the hydrostatic pressure, in particular the Fermi level, and the effective mass in the less conducting, out-of-plane direction. The results are interpreted within a simple two-band model characterized by a Dirac-like, linear in-plane band dispersion, and a parabolic out-of-plane dispersion.

A key aspect of unconventional pairing by the antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuation mechanism is that the superconducting energy gap must have opposite sign on different parts of the Fermi surface. Recent observations of non-nodal gap structure in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ were then very surprising, given that this material has long been considered a prototypical example of a superconductor where the Cooper pairing is magnetically mediated. Here we present a study of the effect of controlled point defects, introduced by electron irradiation, on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. We find that the fully-gapped state is robust against disorder, demonstrating that low-energy bound states, expected for sign-changing gap structures, are not induced by nonmagnetic impurities. In exotic superconductors including high-$T_c$ copper-oxides, the interactions mediating electron Cooper-pairing are widely considered to have a magnetic rather than the conventional electron-phonon origin. Interest in such exotic pairing was initiated by the 1979 discovery of heavy-fermion superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, which exhibits strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations. A hallmark of unconventional pairing by anisotropic repulsive interactions is that the superconducting energy gap changes sign as a function of the electron momentum, often leading to nodes where the gap goes to zero. Here, we report low-temperature specific heat, thermal conductivity and magnetic penetration depth measurements in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, demonstrating the absence of gap nodes at any point on the Fermi surface. Moreover, electron-irradiation experiments reveal that the superconductivity survives even when the electron mean free path becomes substantially shorter than the superconducting coherence length. This indicates that superconductivity is robust against impurities, implying that there is no sign change in the gap function. These results show that, contrary to long-standing belief, heavy electrons with extremely strong Coulomb repulsions can condense into a fully-gapped s-wave superconducting state, which has an on-site attractive pairing interaction., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures + Supplement (3 pages, 5 figures)

Close to a zero temperature transition between ordered and disordered electronic phases, quantum fluctuations can lead to a strong enhancement of the electron mass and to the emergence of competing phases such as superconductivity. A correlation between the existence of such a quantum phase transition and superconductivity is quite well established in some heavy fermion and iron-based superconductors and there have been suggestions that high temperature superconductivity in the copper oxide materials (cuprates) may also be driven by the same mechanism. Close to optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is maximum in the cuprates, two different phases are known to compete with superconductivity: a poorly understood pseudogap phase and a charge ordered phase. Recent experiments have shown a strong increase in quasiparticle mass $m^*$ in the cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ as optimal doping is approached suggesting that quantum fluctuations of the charge ordered phase may be responsible for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity. We have tested the robustness of this correlation between $m^*$ and $T_c$ by performing quantum oscillation studies on the stoichiometric compound YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ under hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to the results for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$, we find that in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ the mass decreases as $T_c$ increases under pressure. This inverse correlation between $m^*$ and $T_c$ suggests that quantum fluctuations of the charge order enhance $m^*$ but do not enhance $T_c$., Comment: 11 pages includes supplementary information

We present a study of the superconducting gap structure in the iron-pnictide series BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. By measuring the variation of the specific heat as a function of temperature and magnetic field we are able to determine the number and Fermi surface location of the nodes in the superconducting gap. In particular, from measurements of the variation of the specific heat as the magnetic field is rotated in the ab plane of the sample we conclude that the nodes are in the [110] directions. Then from a quantitative analysis of the temperature and field dependence of the specific heat we further conclude that nodes exists on all Fermi surface sheets., Comment: 8 pages

Two critical points have been revealed in the normal-state phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ by exploring the Fermi surface properties of high quality single crystals by high-field magnetotransport. First, the quantitative analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect shows that the weak superlattice potential responsible for the Fermi surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime extrapolates to zero at the doping level $x_c = 0.175$ corresponding to the onset of superconductivity. Second, the high-field Hall coefficient exhibits a sharp drop right below optimal doping $x_{\mathrm{opt}} = 0.145$ where the superconducting transition temperature is maximum. This drop is most likely caused by the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. Fluctuations around an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) are believed to lead to unconventional superconductivity and in some cases to high-temperature superconductivity. However, the exact mechanism by which this occurs remains poorly understood. The iron-pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ is perhaps the clearest example to date of a high temperature quantum critical superconductor, and so it is a particularly suitable system in which to study how the quantum critical fluctuations affect the superconducting state. Here we show that the proximity of the QCP yields unexpected anomalies in the superconducting critical fields. We find that both the lower and upper critical fields strongly violate the expectations from the conventional theory taking into account the observed mass enhancement near the QCP. These anomalous behaviours of the critical fields imply that the energy of superconducting vortices is enhanced, possibly due to a microscopic mixing of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, suggesting that a highly unusual vortex state is realised in quantum critical superconductors., Comment: 9 pages

We report a combined study of the specific heat and de Haas-van Alphen effect in the iron-pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. Our data when combined with results for the magnetic penetration depth give compelling evidence for the existence of a quantum critical point (QCP) close to $x=0.30$ which affects the majority of the Fermi surface by enhancing the quasiparticle mass. The results show that the sharp peak in the inverse superfluid density seen in this system results from a strong increase in the quasiparticle mass at the QCP., Comment: 5 pages

We report an angle-dependent study of the magnetic torque $\tau(\theta)$ within the vortex state of single-crystalline LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs and SmO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs as a function of both temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$. Sharp peaks are observed at a critical angle $\theta_c$ at either side of $\theta=90^{\circ}$, where $\theta$ is the angle between $H$ and the inter-planar \emph{c}-axis. $\theta_c$ is interpreted as the critical depinning angle where the vortex lattice, pinned and locked by the intrinsic planar structure, unlocks and acquires a component perpendicular to the planes. We observe a series of smaller replica peaks as a function of $\theta$ and as $\theta$ is swept away from the planar direction. These suggest commensurability effects between the period of the vortex lattice and the inter-planar distance leading to additional kinked vortex configurations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally study transport and intrinsic tunneling characteristics of a single-layer cuprate Bi(2+x)Sr(2-y)CuO(6+delta) with a low superconducting critical temperature Tc < 4 K. It is observed that the superconducting energy, critical field and fluctuation temperature range are scaling down with Tc, while the corresponding pseudogap characteristics have the same order of magnitude as for high-Tc cuprates with 20 to 30 times higher Tc. The observed disparity of the superconducting and pseudogap scales clearly reveals their different origins., Comment: 5 pages

Recently, Borisenko et al have posted a Comment (arXiv:1108.1159) where they suggest an alternative interpretation of our de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements on the superconductor LiFeAs. In our original paper (arXiv:1107.4375) we concluded that our measurements of the bulk Fermi surface were not consistent with the surface bands observed thus far by ARPES. Borisenko et al dispute this and suggest the two measurements are consistent if some of the orbits we observe are due to magnetic breakdown. We argue here that this scenario is inconsistent with the experimental data and therefore that our original conclusion stands., Comment: 4 pages with figures

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study of the 111 iron pnictide superconductors LiFeAs with T_c ~18K and LiFeP with T_c~5K. We find that for both compounds the Fermi surface topology is in good agreement with density functional band-structure calculations and shows quasi-nested electron and hole bands. The effective masses generally show significant enhancement, up to ~3 for LiFeP and ~5 for LiFeAs. However, one hole Fermi surface in LiFeP shows a very small enhancement, as compared with its other sheets. This difference probably results from k-dependent coupling to spin fluctuations and may be the origin of the different nodal and nodeless superconducting gap structures in LiFeP and LiFeAs respectively., Comment: This version includes new higher resolution data. 4 pages with figures

We report on the study of the Fermi surface of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4}$ by measuring the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of the strength and orientation of the applied magnetic field. We performed experiments in both steady and pulsed magnetic fields on high-quality single crystals with Ce concentrations of $x=0.13$ to 0.17. In the overdoped regime of $x > 0.15$ we found both semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The combined AMRO and SdH data clearly show that the appearance of fast SdH oscillations in strongly overdoped samples is caused by magnetic breakdown. This observation provides clear evidence for a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface up to the very end of the overdoped regime at $x\simeq 0.17$. The strength of the superlattice potential responsible for the reconstructed Fermi surface is found to decrease with increasing doping level and likely vanishes at the same carrier concentration as superconductivity, suggesting a close relation between translational symmetry breaking and superconducting pairing. A detailed analysis of the high-resolution SdH data allowed us to determine the effective cyclotron mass and Dingle temperature, as well as to estimate the magnetic breakdown field in the overdoped regime., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures
