The study examines whether the growing popularity of the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) approach could result in the decline or disappearance of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) concept, which has encountered numerous challenges in practical implementation, and what the main sustainability issues are, helping to examine where the transition is, what elements already exist and where there are gaps. The question is analysed in the context of the tourism sector.

Ultrashort-pulse lasers are an established technology for micromachining and have a great future. A major challenge remains the search for suitable laser parameters and a scanning strategy. To date, this has been achieved mainly by conducting experiments and measuring the resulting surfaces. The use of modeling methods for this purpose is not yet practical for industrial processing. In this work, the recently introduced geometric modeling method for pulsed laser ablation is applied to ultrashort laser ablation and extended to consider the power dependence of the process footprint and the pointing stability during ablation. This work highlights this modeling method to cover a wide range of process parameters in a time-saving manner and to simulate laser micromachining in real time. Furthermore, the influence of the processing height compared to the focal height on oxygen-free copper and steel 1.4034 was investigated. For both the ablation depth is decreased while simultaneously increasing the ablation width. For oxygen-free copper, the ablated volume is insensitive to changes in the processing height, which is not the case for steel 1.4034. The results also show the influence of the pulse repetition rate on the change in the shape of material removal and its influence on process stability.

Background: Bolus administration of adrenaline during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) results in only short-term increases in systemic and cerebral perfusion pressure (CePP) with unclear effects on cerebral oxygenation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of bolus compared to continuous adrenaline administration on cerebral oxygenation in a porcine CPR model. Methods: After five minutes of cardiac arrest, mechanical CPR was performed for 15 min. Adrenaline (45 μg/kg) was administered either as a bolus every five minutes or continuously over the same period via an infusion pump. Main outcome parameter was brain tissue oxygen tension (PbtO2), secondary outcome parameters included mean arterial pressure (MAP), intracranial pressure (ICP), CePP and cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO2) as well as arterial and cerebral venous blood gases. Results: During CPR, mean MAP (45 ± 8 mmHg vs. 38 ± 8 mmHg; p = 0.0827), mean ICP (27 ± 7 mmHg vs. 20 ± 7 mmHg; p = 0.0653) and mean CePP (18 ± 8 mmHg vs. 18 ± 8 mmHg; p = 0.9008) were similar in the bolus and the continuous adrenaline group. Also, rSO2 (both 24 ± 6 mmHg; p = 0.9903) and cerebral venous oxygen saturation (18 ± 12% versus 27.5 ± 12%; p = 0.1596) did not differ. In contrast, relative PbtO2 reached higher values in the continuous group after five minutes of CPR and remained significantly higher than in the bolus group until the end of resuscitation. Conclusion: Continuous administration of adrenaline improved brain tissue oxygen tension compared with bolus administration during prolonged CPR.

Abstract Background Aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility and effects of individualised flow-controlled ventilation (FCV), based on compliance guided pressure settings, compared to standard of pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) in a porcine intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) model. The primary aim of this study was to investigate oxygenation. Secondary aims were to assess respiratory and metabolic variables and lung tissue aeration. Methods Pigs were randomly assigned to FCV (n = 9) and PCV (n = 9). IAH was induced by insufflation of air into the abdomen to induce IAH grades ranging from 0 to 3. At each IAH grade FCV was undertaken using compliance guided pressure settings, or PCV (n = 9) was undertaken with the positive end-expiratory pressure titrated for maximum compliance and the peak pressure set to achieve a tidal volume of 7 ml/kg. Gas exchange, ventilator settings and derived formulas were recorded at two timepoints for each grade of IAH. Lung aeration was assessed by a computed tomography scan at IAH grade 3. Results All 18 pigs (median weight 54 kg [IQR 51–67]) completed the observation period of 4 h. Background. Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) of liver grafts has been shown to reduce intraoperative catecholamine consumption and the need for allogenic blood products after reperfusion compared with organs undergoing classical static cold storage (SCS). This study aimed to investigate the effects of an NMP phase after SCS (NMP after SCS) of liver grafts in terms of postreperfusion hemodynamics and transfusion requirements. Methods. Eighteen recipients of NMP after SCS grafts were matched according to recipient age, donor age, and model for end-stage liver disease score in a 1:2 ratio with recipients of an SCS graft. Postreperfusion hemodynamics and the need for catecholamines, blood products, and clotting factors were compared. Results. The increasing numbers of total joint replacements and related implant-associated infections demand solutions, which can provide a high-dose local delivery of antibiotics. Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) is an accepted treatment method for infected joint arthroplasties. The mechanical properties of low-dose gentamicin-loaded bone cement (BC) in medium- and high-viscosity versions were compared to unloaded BC using a vacuum mixing system. As an additional control group, manual mixed unloaded BC was used. In a uniaxial compression test, ultimate compressive strength, compressive yield strength, and compression modulus of elasticity, as well as ultimate and yield strain, were determined according to ISO 5833-2022 guidelines. All groups exceeded the minimum compressive strength (70 MPa) specified in the ISO 5833 guidelines. Both ALBC groups showed a similar ultimate compressive and yield strength to the unloaded BC. The results showed that vacuum mixing increased the compression strength of BC. ALBC showed similar compressive strength to their non-antibiotic counterparts when vacuum mixing was performed. Added low-dose gentamicin acted as a plasticizer on bone cement. From a biomechanical point of view, the usage of gentamicin-based ALBC formulations is viable.

RNase Y is a key endoribonuclease that regulates global mRNA turnover and processing in Bacillus subtilis and likely many other bacteria. This enzyme is anchored to the cell membrane, creating a pseudo-compartmentalization that aligns with its role in initiating the decay of mRNAs primarily translated at the cell periphery. However, the reasons behind and the consequences of RNase Y’s membrane attachment remain largely unknown. In our study, we examined a strain expressing wild-type levels of a cytoplasmic form of RNase Y from its chromosomal locus. This strain exhibits a slow-growth phenotype, similar to that of an RNase Y null mutant. Genome-wide data reveal a significant impact on the expression of hundreds of genes. While certain RNA substrates clearly depend on RNase Y’s membrane attachment, others do not. We observed no correlation between mRNA stabilization in the mutant strains and the cellular location or function of the encoded proteins. Interestingly, the Y-complex, a specificity factor for RNase Y, also appears also recognize the cytoplasmic form of the enzyme, restoring wild-type levels of the corresponding transcripts. We propose that membrane attachment of RNase Y is crucial for its functional interaction with many coding and non-coding RNAs, limiting the cleavage of specific substrates, and potentially avoiding unfavorable competition with other ribonucleases like RNase J, which shares a similar evolutionarily conserved cleavage specificity.

Objectives This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of stereotactic radiofrequency ablation (SRFA) in patients with hepatocellular adenomas (HCA).Methods Retrospective analyses of all patients referred for SRFA treatment at our institution between January 2010 and October 2020 revealed 14 patients (10 women; mean age 34.4 [range, 17–73 years]) with 38 HCAs treated through 18 ablation sessions. Ablations were considered successful if a safety margin >5 mm was achieved. Demographic, interventional, and outcome data were collected and analyzed. Primary and secondary technical efficacy rates were assessed based on follow-up images consisting of contrast-enhanced CT or MR scans.Results The mean tumor size was 22 mm (range, 7–75 mm). Overall, 37/38 (97.4%) tumors were successfully ablated at the initial SRFA (primary efficacy rate of 97.4%). The median follow-up duration was 49.6 months. No deaths or adenoma-related complications (hemorrhage or malignant transformation) were observed. Disease-free survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years from the date of the first SRFA were 100%, 85.8%, and 85.8%, respectively. Two patients developed new distant tumors retreated with consecutive re-ablation. No major complications occurred during any of the 18 ablation sessions.Conclusions Percutaneous thermal ablation is efficient in the treatment of HCAs and may thus be considered a valid first-line treatment option. In addition, SRFA allows for an effective, minimally invasive treatment of large and multiple hepatic tumors within one session.

Purpose To assess the technical outcome and local tumor control of multi-probe stereotactic radiofrequency ablation (SRFA) in a large series of patients. Furthermore, to determine factors accounting for adverse outcomes.Material and methods Between 2003 and 2018, 865 patients were treated by SRFA for 2653 primary and metastatic liver tumors with a median tumor size of 2.0 cm (0.5 − 19 cm). Primary technical efficacy (PTE) and local recurrence (LR) were evaluated, and possible predictors for adverse events analyzed using uni- and multi-variable binary logistic regression.Results Overall, 2553 of 2653 tumors were successfully ablated at initial SRFA resulting in a PTE rate of 96.2%. Predictors of lower PTE rates were age > 70 years, tumor size > 5 cm, number of probes, location close to liver capsule/organs and segment II. LR occurred in 220 of 2653 tumors (8.3%) with the following predictors: age, tumor type/size, conglomerates, segments I/IVa/IVb, number of probes and location close to major vessels/bile duct. Multivariable analysis revealed tumor size > 5 cm (odds ratio [OR] 3.153), age > 70 years (OR 1.559), and location in segment II (OR 1.772) as independent prognostic factors for PTE, whereas tumor location close to major vessels (OR 1.653) and in segment IVb (OR 2.656) were identified as independent prognostic factors of LR.Conclusions Stereotactic RFA is an attractive option in the management of primary or metastatic liver tumors with good local tumor control, even in large tumors. The presented prognostic factors for adverse local oncological outcome might help to stratify unfavorable tumors for ablation.

Osteomyelitis is a bone disease caused by bacteria that can damage bone. Raman handheld spectroscopy has emerged as a promising diagnostic tool for detecting bone infection and can be used intraoperatively during surgical procedures. This study involved 120 bone samples from 40 patients, with 80 samples infected with either Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis. Raman handheld spectroscopy demonstrated successful differentiation between healthy and infected bone samples and between the two types of bacterial pathogens. Raman handheld spectroscopy appears to be a promising diagnostic tool in bone infection and holds the potential to overcome many of the shortcomings of traditional diagnostic procedures. Further research, however, is required to confirm its diagnostic capabilities and consider other factors, such as the limit of pathogen detection and optimal calibration standards.

The Rights of Nature (RoN) promote a new understanding of the human environment, where natural entities are conceived as subjects with intrinsic value independent of human interests. The implementation of this idea gained momentum in the United States in 2006. One decade and a half later, the idea has spread all over the world. Despite some efforts, a sophisticated geographical inventory of the movement is missing. Building on Kauffman (2020), we identified and analysed 409 initiatives in 39 countries, creating the most comprehensive database of RoN initiatives to date. We developed a taxonomy that may guide further research. We also present two detailed maps which can help policymakers, legislators, judges, researchers, and the public at large to evaluate and compare initiatives. The findings of this investigation directly help the UN Harmony with Nature Programme and have contributed to the launch of the Eco-Jurisprudence Monitor, an online database of RoN initiatives.
