We describe a efficient way to photoionize strontium atoms in a linear radio-frequency trap. We use a 2-photon second order process to excite the autoionization resonance (4d2 + 5p2) 1D2. A doubled pulsed Ti:Saphire laser system is used at 431nm to provide 100fsec pulses at 82Mhz. The fabrication of the laser systems for addressing the Sr+ transitions necessary for laser cooling and excitation of quantum jumps, vacuum system and ion trap structure are also described in detail. With the current setup a easy and repeatable trapping of linear ion chains is achieved at UHV pressures., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

In a paper recently published in Science, Taleyarkhan et al. claimed to observe fusion from acoustic cavitation and the associated phenomenon of sonoluminescence. Although, this is a worthwhile line of investigation we explain why, in our opinion, their data neither proves nor disproves this possibility., Comment: 3 pages

Data from an instrument that measures conductance, stiffness and rupture strength of junctions indicates that when two macroscopic metal surfaces are brought into contact a nanometer size junction spontaneously forms over a long time scale (~ 60 s). Furthermore, the parameters of junction rupture match the observed dynamics of stick-slip friction. A force measurement technique has been developed that utilizes a clamped fiber optic element both as a cantilever and as a highly sensitive probe of the static and dynamic displacement of a sample that is mounted near its free end. Light from a 1.5 mW superluminescent diode coupled into the fiber is used to detect displacement with 6*10/sup -13 m*Hz/sup -1/2 sensitivity for frequencies above 40 kHz. This technique has been used to study the interaction between macroscopic bodies with atomic sensitivity. A key parameter underlying the existence of sonoluminescence (SL)is the time relative to SL at which acoustic energy is radiated from the collapsed bubble. Light scattering is one route to this quantity. We disagree with the statement of Gompf and Pecha that -highly compressed water causes the minimum in scattered light to occur 700ps before SL- and that this effect leads to an overestimate of the bubble wall velocity. The experimental key to observing stochasticity or turbulence in a distribution of interacting propagating waves is the achievement of high amplitude and the use of a medium with a large coefficient of nonlinearity. The research indicates that capillary waves are the best means of observing this phenomenon; however, gravitational modifications of the capillary wave dispersion law greatly reduce the large coefficient of nonlinearity. Thus, a search for wave turbulence in a large drop of fluid that is positioned in a microgravity experiment was conducted. Capillary waves that run around the surface of the drop are excited, and their power spectrum and higher order correlations are analyzed for wave turbulence. The theoretical calculations indicate that modulations of the power spectrum should propagate as second sound waves. These issues have consequences for signal processing and plasma confinement.

Minimum of energy occurs at equilibrium point. From gradients of acoustical potential energy, one calculates acoustical restoring force or torque on objects as function of deviation from equilibrium position or orientation.

The Boltzmann-Ehrenfest principle of adiabatic invariance relates the acoustic potential acting on a sample positioned in a single-mode cavity to the shift in resonant frequency caused by the presence of this sample. This general and simple relation applies to samples and cavities of arbitrary shape, dimension, and compressibility. Positioning forces and torques can, therefore, be determined from straightforward measurements of frequency shifts. Applications to the Rayleigh disk phenomenon and levitated cylinders are presented.
