Abstract

Thermal energy storage technologies have been widely used to mitigate intermittency from renewable energy sources such as solar energy. Phase change material (PCM) is a material that can be used as a heat storage medium and is available in a wide range of operating temperatures. Molten salt is one of the PCMs that has the advantage of a very high operating temperature. The PCM solidification simulation based on HitecXL molten salt using COMSOL Multiphysics software was carried out with variations in heat absorption of 1–5 kW/m2, assuming constant heat absorption. The results showed that the PCM solidification process started from the surface of the Stirling engine heat exchanger pipe. The part of the PCM that is solidified falls due to gravity, causing a phenomenon similar to a droplet. The flow that occurred was natural, driven by the buoyancy force resulting from density changes due to temperature gradients in the solidification process. The time required for the PCM to completely solidify was closely related to the amount of heat absorption; the greater the heat absorption from the pipe, the faster the PCM is fully solidified. Abstract

One of the most important economic challenges, affecting nations, officials, economies, and individuals, is energy. Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, have long been the primary energy sources used in energy production. emissions from fossil fuels in the long term can accelerate global environmental deterioration and climate change. The development of renewable energy and energy storage technology as an alternative to fossil fuel needs to be done immediately. This article discusses the use of molten salt-based thermal energy storage for storing thermal-based renewable energy such as solar energy. Examples of molten salts based on nitrate, chloride, fluoride and carbonate for thermal storage media at various working temperatures, applications and thermophysical properties are discussed in this article. The conversion of thermal energy to electrical energy using a Stirling engine is also discussed in this article. Several proposed systems, designs, and performance for converting heat energy to electricity using the Stirling engine are introduced and discussed in this article. The prototype Stirling-molten salt system has been analyzed and is available in several studies. As a result, molten salt capability to supply heat over a long period of time and affects the performance of the heat-to-electricity conversion by the Stirling engine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A heat pipe is a passive two-phase heat exchanger technology, as a capillary-driven structure that allows heat transport by maintaining temperature difference. Heat pipe performance can be determined from the value of heat resistance, and nanoparticle can be applied to increase heat pipe performance. This research uses Al2O3 and TiO2 as a coating material for the heat pipe. The methods used in this research were by giving the heat pipe a nano-coating treatment using the electrophoretic deposition process and doing a pool boiling experiment by giving the heat pipe some heat loads. The main data of this research are temperature and bubble growth data. Based on the result of the research, the use of nanoparticles can improve heat pipe performance. The temperature difference between the evaporator and condenser area was calculated 2.38 °C on Al2O3 coating and 3.92 °C on TiO2 coating. Al2O3 nanoparticle coating was able to provide a heat transfer coefficient 480% superior to sample without nanoparticle coating, and 174% better than TiO2 nanoparticle coating.
