Abstract

Background: Medical practitioners are a very credible source of information related to nutrition that decides an individual’s health status. Hence, this study was conducted with an objective to assess the knowledge and competency of the future medical practitioners regarding nutrition in health and disease. Methods: This study was conducted among the interns of two batches. Interns answered a pre tested structured questionnaire containing multiple choice questions regarding knowledge related to nutrition. Based on the points scored in this, study participants were classified as high and low scorers. Among the high and low scoring interns, 10% were randomly selected. Their competency was assessed by Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as they counselled simulated patients regarding nutrition in health and disease. Means and proportions were used to represent the descriptive data. Mann Whitney U test and Wilcoxon sign rank test were used to test the associations. Results: Mean knowledge score was 16.63 ± 2.43. As many as 176 (90.3%) were high scorers and 19 (9.7%) were low scorers. Mean competency score was 21.1 ± 4.7. Association between knowledge score (high and low scoring categories) and competency score (mean) was found statistically significant (Z = -2.67, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Though most of the interns were high scorers the mean knowledge as well as competency scores were still unsatisfactory. However, it was noted that knowledge and competency scores were associated showing that with better knowledge, competency also becomes better.

Abstract

The study explored the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and potential antihyperlipidemic effects of Allspice (Pimenta dioica) leaf essential oil. The oil yield from hydro-distillation was 1.61 ± 0.35% (v/w), with major compounds identified by GC-MS analysis as eugenol (72.06 ± 3.93%), β-pinene (9.29 ± 3.33%), chavicol (6.95 ± 0.6%), limonene (3.05 ± 0.71%), and 3-octenol (1.55 ± 1.07%). The oil's antioxidant activity (426 ± 3.5 mg TE g−1) was attributed to polyphenols. It also reduced porcine pancreatic lipase activity, suggesting potential in managing dietary lipids. Molecular docking showed strong binding to CES1, with eugenol, limonene, β-pinene, and octenol outperforming the control (probucol). Abstract

Background: The estimated prevalence of self-medication practices globally and nationally are 95% and 71% respectively. Inappropriate self-medication leads to irrational use of drugs and development of drug resistance. Hence, the present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and patterns of self-medication practices in urban field practice area, SDMCMS&H, Dharwad. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted during 2018-2019 among adult aged 18-60 years. The estimated sample size was 335. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select the samples. Data was collected by administering questionnaire to the consented study participants. Results: A total of 335 adults participated in our study. The prevalence of self-medication practices was 46%. Minor-illness 89(57.7%) and quick relief 50(32.46%) were the major reasons given for practicing self-medication. Fever and headache 146(94.8%) was the most common symptom and analgesic 128(83.11%) was the most common drug used. significant association was found between self-medication practices and religion, age, employment and presence of health care workers in the family. Conclusion: Around half of the study participants practiced self-medication. Easy availability and limited knowledge are the reasons for wide range of practice. Creating awareness about dangers of self-medication is important to prevent untoward effects and drug resistance.

Abstract

Background: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) have been implicated to play a role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare P. gingivalis in subgingival plaque samples and salivary (immunoglobulin A [IgA]) antibodies against lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of P. gingivalis in periodontal health and disease. Materials and Methods: Totally sixty subjects were included, thirty subjects in healthy group and thirty subjects in chronic periodontitis group. Subgingival plaque and unstimulated saliva samples were obtained from each study subject. P. gingivalis (colony-forming units [CFUs]) were detected using culture method, and salivary IgA levels were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. Comparisons between the healthy and chronic periodontitis groups were done for P. gingivalis CFUs/ml (CFUs/milliliter) as well as for salivary IgA levels using Mann–Whitney U-test. Correlation between CFUs/ml of P. gingivalis and salivary IgA levels was also assessed in both the groups. Results: Although P. gingivalis CFUs/ml count was more in the chronic periodontitis group, difference was not statistically significant. Salivary IgA levels were significantly higher in the chronic periodontitis group compared to the healthy group. No correlation was observed between CFUs/ml of P. gingivalis and salivary IgA levels in the healthy group as well as the chronic periodontitis group. Conclusions: Increased levels of specific salivary antibodies (IgA) against LPS from P. gingivalis are associated with periodontal disease. Salivary IgA level against LPS from P. gingivalis can be a promising indicator in the serological diagnosis of periodontal disease.

Abstract

In Tamil Nadu, rice is the predominant crop during samba season. In the Cauvery Delta Zone around 2.5 lakh hectares purely depend on water from Cauvery in Samba season during the normal years of water release from Cauvery, CR 1009 is predominantly grown variety without any alternate varieties. Mono cropping of CR 1009 leads to susceptibility to pests such as brown plant hoppers (BPH) stem borers and diseases such as blast, bacterial leaf blight (BLB), grain discolouration and false smut. In order to provide a choice variety to farmers’ one long duration rice culture, AD 09367 a derivative of the cross BPT 5204 / Improved White ponni was released as Rice ADT 51 during the year 2018. ADT 51 matures in 155 to 160 days with tall, erect and high tillering plant habit and well adapted to single season canal dependent rice growing areas of Cauvery delta for Samba season (August-September sowing). ADT 51 has recorded a mean grain yield of 6533 kg/ha which is 9.8 and 12.7 per cent higher than CR 1009 (5947 kg/ha) and ADT 50 (5796 kg/ha) respectively. At Thiruvisanallur, Thanjavur district it manifested highest yield of 10036 kg/ha and the OFT farmer, Mr. Baskar received first prize in the district level crop yield competition for the year 2016. Besides its yield superiority, ADT 51 is resistant to blast and moderately resistant to leaf folder, stem borer, BPH, Sheath blight and sheath rot. The milled rice of this variety is white, medium grade with a 1000 grain weight of 23.9 g. High milling and head rice yield and cooking qualities of ADT 51 are comparable with CR 1009. Opinion from farmers revealed that, vigorous growing nature and tolerance to major pest and diseases of this culture requires less inputs especially nitrogenous fertilizer and plant protection chemicals for cultivation. The characters such as more no. of productive tillers, less chaffiness and quick establishment of seedling are its added advantages.
