Rivers and floodplains provide many regulating, provisioning and cultural ecosystem services (ES) such as flood risk regulation, crop production or recreation. Intensive use of resources such as hydropower production, construction of detention basins and intensive agriculture substantially change ecosystems and may affect their capacity to provide ES. Legal frameworks such as the European Water Framework Directive, Bird and Habitats Directive and Floods Directive already address various uses and interests. However, management is still sectoral and often potential synergies or trade-offs between sectors are not considered. The ES concept could support a joint and holistic evaluation of impacts and proactively suggest advantageous options. The river ecosystem service index (RESI) method evaluates the capacity of floodplains to provide ES by using a standardized five-point scale for 1 km-floodplain segments based on available spatial data. This scaling allows consistent scoring of all ES and their integration into a single index. The aim of this article is to assess ES impacts of different flood prevention scenarios on a 75 km section of the Danube river corridor in Germany. The RESI method was applied to evaluate scenario effects on 13 ES with the standardized five-point scale. Synergies and trade-offs were identified as well as ES bundles and dependencies on land use and connectivity. The ratio of actual and former floodplain has the strongest influence on the total ES provision: the higher the percentage and area of an active floodplain, the higher the sum of ES. Large wood (LW), defined as pieces of wood greater than 10 cm in diameter and 1 m long, is well known to alter river hydromorphology and the availability of potential food resources for consumers. However, there has been a lack of studies investigating whether these can cause shifts in the trophic base, which may explain alterations to the total abundance and taxonomic structure of the macroinvertebrate assemblage. We aimed to determine how the presence of LW altered the trophic base of the macroinvertebrate consumer assemblage in a lowland river, and to provide a methodological comparison of two assimilation-based food web methods: stable-isotope analysis (SIA) and fatty-acid biomarker profiles (FA). To do so, we quantified the contribution of trophic resources to the diets of macroinvertebrates colonising the surface of LW, present in this study as single logs, and surrounding bed sediments with those from bed sediments of a nearby control site with minimal amounts of LW. SIA showed that the macroinvertebrate food web, even for non-filter feeding taxa, was mostly sustained by seston exported from a lake 1 km upstream, highlighting a high degree of lake-river coupling. The presence of wood altered the trophic base from being predominantly seston-supported to one with increased support from epixylic autochthonous production (i.e. periphyton and bryophytes on wood). Terrestrial matter (i.e. leaves and grass) and organic sediments were a relatively unimportant fraction of the trophic base (\textless10%) in all locations. FA did not directly track the influence of seston, but instead differentiated between overall allochthonous (terrestrial) and autochthonous (aquatic) components of the trophic base. In particular, FA analysis demonstrated the higher nutritional value of autochthonous primary producers, and provided supporting evidence that most consumers, even seston-feeders, were primarily supported by autochthonous resources and not by allochthonous matter. Coarse woody debris (CWD) in the littoral zone of lakes constitutes a preferred habitat for macroinvertebrates and fish. CWD differs in the surface complexity depending on its decay status. Therefore, CWD may provide distinct types of shelters and thus modify the structure of the macroinvertebrate community as well as its susceptibility to fish predation. We ran an enclosure experiment in a lake littoral zone to test the effect of surface complexity of CWD on the interactions between the predator, Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) and its potential macroinvertebrate prey. We deployed 10 enclosures containing fresh wood with a smooth surface and 10 enclosures containing decayed wood with a more complex, rough surface and allowed colonisation by macroinvertebrates. Five enclosures of each type were then stocked by perch and exposed to fish predation. The abundance and biomass of macroinvertebrates were significantly higher on decayed wood with greater surface complexity than on fresh wood; however, the type of CWD did not strongly influence the taxonomic composition and diversity of invertebrates. The direct effect of perch predation on the macroinvertebrate community was weak. Perch reduced only the abundance of adult Dikerogammarus villosus, while other potential prey, such as chironomids, was more abundant in the presence of the fish. The impact of perch consumption of these larvae was probably obscured by interspecific interactions among chironomids and D. villosus, which were impaired in the fish enclosures. We found no clear evidence that the influence of perch on macroinvertebrates was mediated by the complexity of the wood surface. However, fish diet analysis showed that on decayed wood, perch preferentially consumed chironomids, and consumption of D. villosus was much lower, while on fresh wood, the preferential consumption of chironomids decreased with increasing consumption of gammarids. To evaluate the effects of large wood (LW) on benthic habitats and macroinvertebrates in sand-bed lowland rivers, we compared invertebrate communities recorded on four pieces of LW (12 samples in total) and around them (60 samples) with those in four control sites in the same river (four samples). Mean flow velocity was 32% lower in the channel areas surrounding the LW than in control sites, while median sediment grain size was 50% higher, and the organic matter content of the riverbed sediments was 287% higher. At the same time, habitat conditions showed threefold to 1000-fold increases in variance for five key abiotic habitat descriptors in the surrounding channel extending at least 60 cm upstream and 160 cm downstream of the LW. Three habitat patches typically occurred around the LW pieces: scouring pools, sand bars and accumulations of organic matter. These patches were colonised by distinctive invertebrate communities (e.g. accumulations of organic matter and gravel hosted 15 and 2 indicator taxa, respectively) that overall harboured 110% more taxa and exhibited a 168% higher diversity than control sites. The LW itself contributed only a small fraction to these increases, exhibiting a 15% increase in taxa richness and a 21% increase in species diversity compared to the control sites. The diversification of benthic invertebrate communities colonising streambed sediments around LW could be directly linked to the much more heterogeneous habitat conditions recorded there. Thus, local additions of large wood within river restoration programmes have the potential to promote the establishment of diverse invertebrate communities in extended areas of a river channel.

Large Wood (LW) has important ecological functions. LW behaves as a bluff body in the flow field. The hydrodynamics around bluff bodies have been abundantly investigated in the past by means of experiments and numerical modeling. Most investigations concerned laboratory configurations, which may not be representative of natural river configurations. A field investigation on the natural Plizska River in Poland revealed that LW on the riverbed and banks causes a high heterogeneity in bathymetry and substrate, as well as irregular banklines. Measurements of the three-dimensional velocity vector were performed with high spatial and temporal resolution in three streamwise-vertical plans enveloping a LW that spanned almost the entire width of the river. The three plans were situated over different types of substrate: gravel, sand, and organic matter, respectively. The mean flow field was characterized by the typical features of flow around bluff bodies: flow divergence upstream of the LW, convergence downstream of the LW, and a wake zone with return currents just downstream of the LW. Turbulence levels were high in the flow, and substantially higher that predictions based on theory for canonical shear layers. The results indicate that an important part of the turbulence is not induced by friction on the riverbed, but by LW on the riverbed and banks. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Besides pollution, lakes are affected by human alterations of lake-shore morphology. However, ecological effects of such alterations have rarely been studied systematically. Hence, we developed tools to assess the ecological effects of anthropogenic morphological alterations on European lake-shores based on pressure-specific response patterns of littoral macroinvertebrate community composition. Littoral invertebrates were sampled from 51 lakes in seven European countries. Sampling covered a range of natural to heavily morphologically degraded sites including natural shorelines, recreational beaches, ripraps and retaining walls. Biological data were supplemented by standardized morphological data that were collected via a Lake Habitat Survey (LHS) protocol and subsequently used to develop a morphological stressor index. Two biotic multimetric indices were developed based on habitat-specific samples (Littoral Invertebrate Multimetric based on HAbitat samples, LIMHA) and composite samples (Littoral Invertebrate Multimetric based on COmposite samples, LIMCO) through correlations with the morphological stressor index. Similarity analyses showed strong spatial differences in macroinvertebrate community composition between four main geographical regions, i.e. Western, Northern, Central and Southern Europe. The morphological stressor index as well as LIMCO and LIMHA have been developed for each geographical region specifically, thereby optimizing correlations of LIMCO and LIMHA with the respective morphological stressor index. The metric composition of LIMCO and LIMHA and their correlation coefficients with the morphological stressor index are comparable to existing national and regional methods that assess morphological lakeshore degradation via macroinvertebrate communities. The role of turbulence in the dislodgment of benthic stream invertebrates from the riverbed was investigated experimentally in a laboratory flume. For the first time, technological advances allowed measuring the spatio-temporal patterns of turbulent flow around two free-moving invertebrates (Aeshna cyanea and Somatochlora flavomaculata). A specific methodology was developed for the analysis of turbulence around benthic invertebrates. The results confirmed two hypotheses: (i) on the contrary to sediment particles, invertebrates are not only sensitive to the peak values of the turbulent flow forcing but also to the temporal fluctuations in this flow forcing; and (ii) the dominant temporal fluctuations are not due to local turbulent structures of the size of the invertebrate, but to turbulent structures that scale with the flow depth and are inherited from upstream. In 15 of the 17 conducted tests, important turbulent events that scale with the flow depth accompanied by rapid temporal flow fluctuations occurred at the moment of dislodgement. The dominant forcing was consistently a threefold increase in shear stress, and was related to a sweep event in 12 of the 17 tests. Thereby, the increase in longitudinal velocity was typically about 40%, which led to a 100% increase in drag force in comparison with the time-averaged drag force. These results enable a new understanding of the detailed hydraulic conditions leading to passive drift of stream invertebrates. In addition, they open new perspectives to improve models predicting the distribution of benthic invertebrates based on hydrodynamics by accounting for turbulence. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
