The orbital environment is complex, dynamic, and comprised of both natural and system-induced components. Several environment factors are important for materials. Materials selection/suitability determination requires consideration of each and all factors, including synergisms among them. Understanding and evaluating these effects will require ground testing, modeling, and focused flight experimentation.

Plasma interactions and their effects on materials depend on a number of factors, including the pre-existing environment, the properties of surface materials and the characteristics of the system. An additional dimension is the question of mission: some payloads may be much more sensitive to plasma interactions than others. As an example, a payload whose objective is to measure the ambient environment will be more sensitive to any effects than will a power system. Material specific effects include charging and its associated effects, which can result in short- and long-term damage. Selection of materials for a particular application requires consideration of all factors and assessment of effects due to all causes. Proper selection and suitability determination requires analysis to identify the actual environment combined with testing under exposure to single and combined environment factors.

Space systems in the future will probably include high-voltage, high-power energy-storage and -production systems. Two such technologies are high-voltage ac and dc systems and high-power electrodynamic tethers. The working group identified several plasma interaction phenomena that will occur in the operation of these power systems. The working group felt that building an understanding of these critical interaction issues meant that several gaps in our knowledge had to be filled, and that certain aspects of dc power systems have become fairly well understood. Examples of these current collection are in quiescent plasmas and snap over effects. However, high-voltage dc and almost all ac phenomena are, at best, inadequately understood. In addition, there is major uncertainty in the knowledge of coupling between plasmas and large scale current flows in space plasmas. These gaps in the knowledge are addressed.

During electron beam accelerator operation on Spacelab I, substantial fluxes of electrons were observed with energies greater than the initial beam energy. Numerical calculations are performed for the emission of an unneutralized, one-dimensional electron beam. These calculations show clearly that space charge oscillations, which are associated with the charge buildup on the emitter, strongly modify the beam and cause the returning beam particles to have a distribution of kinetic energies ranging from half to over twice the initial energy.

A joint Air Force/NASA comprehensive research and technology program on spacecraft environmental interactions to develop technology to control interactions between large spacecraft systems and the charged-particle environment of space is described. This technology will support NASA/Department of Defense operations of the shuttle/IUS, shuttle/Centaur, and the force application and surveillance and detection missions, planning for transatmospheric vehicles and the NASA space station, and the AFSC military space system technology model. The program consists of combined contractual and in-house efforts aimed at understanding spacecraft environmental interaction phenomena and relating results of ground-based tests to space conditions. A concerted effort is being made to identify project-related environmental interactions of concern. The basic properties of materials are being investigated to develop or modify the materials as needed. A group simulation investigation is evaluating basic plasma interaction phenomena to provide inputs to the analytical modeling investigation. Systems performance is being evaluated by both groundbased tests and analysis.

The second Plasma Interactions Experiment (PIX-2) was launched in January 1983 as a piggyback on the second stage of the Delta launch vehicle that carried IRAS into orbit. Placed in a 870 km circular polar orbit, it returned 18 hrs of data on the plasma current collection and arcing behavior of solar arrays biased to +/-1000 V in steps. The four 500 sq cm solar array segments were biased singly and in combinations. In addition to the array segments PIX-2 carried a Sun sensor, a Langmuir probe to measure electron currents, and a hot-wire filament electron emitter to control vehicle potential during positive array bias sequences. The PIX-2 experiment is reviewed from program and operational perspectives.

Future spacecraft, notably the proposed Space Station, will require power systems much larger than have previously been flown. It is recognized that at higher voltages, and at the relatively high plasma density present at low Earth orbital altitudes, undesirable interactions between the high voltage solar array and the space plasma will occur. Space experiments on high voltage solar array space plasma interactions in low Earth orbit are an absolute requirement for confident design of a higher voltage solar array. Experiments are presently being identified to provide the necessary space data for calibration of ground testing, validation of analytical models, and development of design guidelines required for confident design of high voltage solar arrays in space. A proposed flight experiment program which is designed to obtain the required data is summarized.

Guidelines were developed for the control of absolute and differential charging of spacecraft surfaces by the lower energy space charged particle environment. Interior charging due to higher energy particles is not considered. A guide to good design practices for assessing and controlling charging effects is presented. Uniform design practices for all space vehicles are outlined.

Interactions between space systems and their orbital particle and field environments have significant impact on the system's operation and life. Interactions such as radiation damage and aerodynamic drag are considered in designing space systems. There are, however, a number of orbital environmental interactions which become important design considerations only for large or high power systems. Their impact is assessed to ensure successful design. Interactions between higher voltage solar arrays and the space plasma which are of critical concern in designing large orbital photovoltaic power systems are outlined.

Plasma data from the University of California, San Diego, Auroral Particles experiments on Applied Technology satellites 5 and 6 are used to investigate the dynamics of natural charging events. Both eclipse and daylight charging events are considered, and typical responses are illustrated by data from specific events. Two different physical processes are found to be involved in the charging process. One of these is straightforward: the spacecraft structure potential responds rapidly to changes in the environment, typically changing by hundreds of volts in a few seconds. The other process is more subtle: differential charging and potential barrier formation precede structural charging and determine the time scale; typically, tens of minutes are required for the potential to change by several hundreds of volts. The latter process is found to be predominately responsible for daylight charging on both spacecraft.

A shuttle flight experiment, the purpose of which is to obtain space data on the interaction of a high voltage solar array with the ambient space plasma is addressed. This flight experiment is a reflight of the solar array flight experiment, SAFE, except that three active solar array panels, electron release devices and plasma diagnostics are added. This experiment, SAFE 2, evaluates power loss due to parasitic current collected by the solar array, arcing on the solar array and perturbations to the plasma which may increase power loss and disturb plasma and charged particle science acquisition.

The role of potential barrier formation in spacecraft charging at geosynchronous orbit is discussed. The evidence for, and understanding of, spacecraft charging and its hazards to spacecraft operation in the early 1970's are summarized. Theoretical and experimental advances which have changed the basic understanding of the role of barrier formation in charging phenomenology are described. Potential barriers are found to play a fundamental role in the dynamics of spacecraft charging. The consequences for structural and differential charging and for discharging are described.

Expressions for piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients for a crystal of polarizable point dipoles are derived. The effect of crystal structure on the local electric field acting to polarize the molecules is included via the Lorentz-factor formalism. The derived expressions for the piezo- and pyroelectric coefficients are found to contain terms dependent on derivatives of the Lorentz factors. These terms reflect the changing of molecular dipole moments in response to the changing local electric field in the strained crystal. Inclusion of this effect results in predictions of coefficients substantially different from those obtained using the Lorentz field approximation.

A method for computing the Lorentz tensor components in single crystals via rapidly convergent sums of Bessels functions is developed using the relationship between dipole-field sums and the tensor components. The Lorentz factors for simple, body-centered, and base-centered orthorhombic lattices are computed using this method, and the derivative Lorentz factors for simple orthorhombic lattices are also determined. Both the Lorentz factors and their derivatives are shown to be very sensitive to a lattice structure. The equivalent of the Clausius-Mossotti relation for general orthorhombic lattices is derived using the Lorentz-factor formalism, and the permanent molecular dipole moment is related to crystal polarization for the case of a ferroelectric of polarizable point dipoles. It is concluded that the polarization enhancement due to self-polarization familiar from classical theory may actually be a reduction in consequences of negative Lorentz factors in one or two lattice directions for noncubic crystals.

Engineering design tools that can be used to predict the development of absolute and differential potentials by realistic spacecraft under geomagnetic substorm conditions are described. Two types of analyses are in use: (1) the NASCAP code, which computes quasistatic charging of geometrically complex objects with multiple surface materials in three dimensions; (2) lumped element equivalent circuit models that are used for analyses of particular spacecraft. The equivalent circuit models require very little computation time, however, they cannot account for effects, such as the formation of potential barriers, that are inherently multidimensional. Steady state potentials of structure and insulation are compared with those resulting from the equivalent circuit model.

Models for the satellite surface potential monitor (SSPM) units constructed in the NASCAP code and the results of comparing predictions to surface voltage and baseplate current data are reported. Several peculiarities in the test data are noted. Preliminary results from space simulations of a SCATHA model with environments representative of the day 87, 1979, eclipse injection event are presented, and their implications for predicting space response are discussed.

Satellites in geosynchronous orbit have been experiencing operational anomalies. These anomalies are believed to be due to the environment charging the spacecraft surfaces to a point where discharges occur. In designing future satellites for long term operation at geosynchronous altitude, it is important that designers have a specification that will give the total time per year, the particle flux density, and particle energies that their satellites can be expected to encounter in these substorm environmental conditions. The limited data currently available on the environmental conditions was used to generate the provisional specification given.

Satellites in geosynchronous orbits have been found to be charged to significant negative voltages during encounters with geomagnetic substorms. When satellite surfaces are charged, there is a probability of enhanced contamination from charged particles attracted back to the satellite by electrostatic forces. This could be particularly disturbing to large satellites using sensitive optical systems. In this study the NASA Charging Analyzer Program (NASCAP) is used to evaluate qualitatively the possibility of such enhanced contamination on a conceptual version of a large satellite. The evaluation is made by computing surface voltages on the satellite due to encounters with substorm environments and then computing charged-particle trajectories in the electric fields around the satellite. Particular attention is paid to the possibility of contaminants reaching a mirror surface inside a dielectric tube because this mirror represents a shielded optical surface in the satellite model used. Deposition of low energy charged particles from other parts of the spacecraft onto the mirror was found to be possible in the assumed moderate substorm environment condition. In the assumed severe substorm environment condition, however, voltage build up on the inside and edges of the dielectric tube in which the mirror is located prevents contaminants from reaching the mirror surface.

The concept of active control of spacecraft charging by charged particle emission is described. Active potential control experiments using the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geostationary spacecraft are discussed, and results of these experiments are presented. Previously reported results are summarized, and a guide to reports on these data are provided. Experimental evidence presented indicates that emission of electrons only is not effective in maintaining spacecraft potential near plasma potential for spacecraft with electrically insulating surfaces. Emission of a low energy plasma, however, is effective for this purpose.

The response of various spacecraft configurations to a charging environment in sunlight was studied using the NASA Charging Analyzer Program code. The configuration features geometry, type of stabilization, and overall size. Results indicate that sunlight charging response is dominated by differential charging effects. Shaded insulation charges negatively result in the formation of potential barriers which suppress photoelectron emission from sunlit surfaces. Sunlight charging occurs relatively slowly: with 30 minutes of charging simulations, in none of the configurations modeled did the most negative surface cell reach half its equilibrium potential in eclipse.

A study is presented in which the sensitivity of predicted equilibrium potential to changes in secondary electron yield parameters is investigated using MATCHG, a simple charging code which incorporates the NASCAP material property formulations. It is found that equilibrium potential is a sensitive function of one of the two parameters specifying secondary electron yield due to proton impact and of essentially all the parameters specifying yield due to electron impact. In addition, it is found that information on the electron generated secondary yield parameters can be obtained from monoenergetic beam charging data if charging rates as well as equilibrium potentials are accurately recorded.

Experiments conducted on the ATS 5 and ATS 6 which have demonstrated the feasibility of modifying or clamping the environmentally induced potential of these spacecraft are described. The results of these experiments indicate that a thermionic electron source is capable of replacing photo-emitted electrons during eclipse. However, the utility of this type of device is limited if its emission is suppressed by local electric fields. On the other hand, it is shown that a plasma source will not only serve as a substitute for photo-emitted electrons but will also suppress differential charging of isolated elements of the spacecraft which would tend to suppress electron emission. This later device is therefore capable of clamping the potential of a spacecraft without special considerations of its coupling to the ambient plasma.

In the context of the spacecraft charging technology investigation, studies were made to characterize the response of typical spacecraft surface materials to the charging environment. The objective is to obtain an understanding of the charging and discharging behavior of such materials for the reliable prediction of spacecraft response to charging environments and as a guide for the design of future spacecraft. Materials were characterized in terms of such basic properties as resistivity and secondary emission and in terms of charging and discharging behavior in simulated charging environments.

Metal plates partially covered by 0.01-centimeter-thick fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) Teflon were charged in the Lewis Research Center's geomagnetic substorm simulation facility using 5-, 8-, 10-, and 12-kilovolt electron beams. Surface voltage as a function of time was measured for various initial conditions (Teflon discharged or precharged) with the metal plate grounded or floating. Results indicate that both the charging rates and the levels to which the samples become charged are influenced by the geometry and initial charge state of the insulating surfaces. The experiments are described and the results are presented and discussed. NASA charging analyzer program (NASCAP) models of the experiments have been generated, and the predictions obtained are described. Implications of the study results for spacecraft are discussed.
