Objective: Surgical defects following fibrotomy in oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) are difficult to manage due to relapse, and local flaps play a pivotal role in covering the defect. The purpose of this study is to compare the buccal fat pad (BFP) and nasolabial flap (NLF) for the reconstruction of intraoral defects after the release of fibrous bands in patients with OSMF. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on patients with OSMF with surgical treatment of fibrotomy excision and reconstruction of the defect with 2 options. Thirty patients with OSMF were divided into 2 groups, group I (BFP) and group II (NLF). Both groups were analyzed for preoperative and postoperative mouth opening and oral commissural width; the extraoral scar was assessed using the Stony Brook Scar Assessment Scale. The data were statistically analyzed using paired and unpaired t test. Results: Thirty patients comprising 27 (90%) male and 3 (10%) female with ages ranging between 19 and 51 years were involved. The mean preoperative and postoperative interincisal mouth opening was 12 mm and 27 mm in group I and 11 mm and 38 mm in group II, respectively, showing a significant increase in group II, and the mean preoperative and postoperative commissural width was 52 mm and 58 mm in group I and 51 mm and 60 mm in group II, respectively. Conclusion: The proposed surgical protocol for the management of OSMF found NLF superior to BFP for the reconstruction of intraoral defects after the release of fibers in patients with OSMF, with a minimal residual scar.

This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence, stages, subtypes of hypertension, and the associated risk factors in adolescent school children in Western India. We screened 2,644 adolescents, from 10 different private and government schools in urban and rural areas for hypertension, as defined by the 2017 Clinical Practice Guidelines. The association of stages and subtypes with age, gender, body mass index, type of school, and place of residence was analysed. 197 children (7.5%) had hypertension; 170 (6.4%) had stage I, 27 (1%) had stage II and 76 (2.9%) had elevated blood pressure (EBP). The risk of EBP was higher in children 15 years of age (p = 0.006). Compared with normal-weight children, obese, and overweight children had a higher risk of hypertension [odds ratio (OR) 9 (5.84, 13.88) and 3.77 (2.59, 5.48) respectively], whereas underweight children had a lower risk [OR 0.39 (0.16, 0.98)]. Normal-weight hypertension was seen in 5.2% and was higher in children from government schools (9.4%). Systolic-diastolic hypertension (SDH) was the most common subtype, seen in 136 (5.1%). SDH was more common in girls, in rural children, and in those with stage II hypertension. Isolated diastolic hypertension, seen in 51 (1.9%), was more common in boys, in urban children, and in those with EBP.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is a rare acquired autoimmune disorder clinically characterized by skin lesions that resemble those of subacute or discoid lupus erythematosus and/or congenital heart bock. Skin and cardiac manifestations coexist only in 10% of the patients. It is caused by transplacental passage of maternal autoantibodies, usually anti-Ro/SS-A and /or anti-La/SS-B and less commonly anti-U1 ribonucleoprotein. Mothers of the infants with NLE are either asymptomatic or diagnosed with autoimmune disease. We describe 3 neonates with clinical and immunological findings compatible with NLE, their progress and outcome.
