Purpose: To assess associations between sedentary time (ST), physical activity (PA), and cardiovascular health in early childhood. Method: Cross-sectional study including 160 children (age 6.1 y [SD 0.5], 86 boys, 93 maternal body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2, and 73 gestational diabetes) assessed for pulse wave velocity, echocardiography, ultra-high frequency 48–70 MHz vascular ultrasound, and accelerometery. Results: Boys had 385 (SD 53) minutes per day ST, 305 (SD 44) minutes per day light PA, and 81 (SD 22) minutes per day moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA). Girls had 415 (SD 50) minutes per day ST, 283 (SD 40) minutes per day light PA, and 66 (SD 19) minutes per day MVPA. In adjusted analyses, MVPA was inversely associated with resting heart rate (β = −6.6; 95% confidence interval, −12.5 to −0.7) and positively associated with left ventricular mass (β = 6.8; 1.4–12.3), radial intima-media thickness (β = 11.4; 5.4–17.5), brachial intima-media thickness (β = 8.0; 2.0–14.0), and femoral intima-media thickness (β = 1.3; 0.2–2.3). MVPA was inversely associated with body fat percentage (β = −3.4; −6.6 to −0.2), diastolic blood pressure (β = −0.05; −0.8 to −0.1), and femoral (β = −18.1; −32.4 to −0.8) and radial (β = −13.4; −24.0 to −2.9) circumferential wall stress in boys only. ST and pulse wave velocity showed no significant associations. Conclusions: In young at-risk children, MVPA is associated with cardiovascular remodeling, partly in a sex-dependant way, likely representing physiological adaptation, but ST shows no association with cardiovascular health in early childhood. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term effect of body composition, physical activity, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) from puberty on arterial health in late adolescent males. Methods: The cumulative burden of physical activity (measured with accelerometer), CRF (VO2peak0.82), and body composition (body mass index, fat mass, and fat percentage) from puberty to late adolescence (sum of 4 time points from 12 to 18 y) was assessed in 102 males. Additional analysis on the first (T1) and last (T4) time points was performed. Intima-media thickness (IMT), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, and augmentation index adjusted to heart rate of 75 beats per minute (bpm) as dependent variables were measured at T4 and analyzed in multivariable regression models adjusted for known risk factors including maturation, blood pressure, and smoking habits. Results: T1 and cumulative body composition measures were independently associated with IMT, while cumulative (β = −0.011, P =.036) and T4 (β = −0.0.031, P =.001) CRF revealed independent associations with IMT. Individuals with moderate to vigorous physical activity >60 minutes per day at T1 showed relationship (β = −1.091, P =.026) with IMT independently of late adolescent physical activity. No significant relationship was present for arterial function. Conclusion: Arterial structure in adolescent males is associated with physical activity at 12 years while relationship with CRF can be seen in late adolescence and cumulatively from puberty to late adolescence. Background and Aims Methods Results Conclusion Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and has been associated with abnormalities of mineral metabolism and vascular calcification. Vitamin D influences parathyroid hormone values and calcium and phosphate metabolism, and may play a role in vascular function and bone health. We aimed to test our hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency is associated with arterial stiffness, aortic calcification and lower bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with CKD.A cross‐sectional analysis was performed using baseline data from the IMpact of Phosphate Reduction On Vascular Endpoints in CKD (IMPROVE‐CKD) study cohort. Clinical and laboratory parameters were compared between those with and without vitamin D deficiency, defined as 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) <50 nmol/L. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to assess associations between serum 25(OH)D levels and pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AIx), abdominal aortic calcification (measured by the Agatston score) and lumbar spine BMD.Baseline 25(OHD) values were available in 208 out of 278 IMPROVE‐CKD study participants, with a mean value of 70.1 ± 30.7 nmol/L. Of these, 57 (27%) patients had vitamin D deficiency. Those with 25(OH)D deficiency were more likely to have diabetes (56% vs 38%), cardiovascular disease (54% vs 36%) and lower serum calcium (2.29 ± 0.13 vs 2.34 ± 0.13 mmol/L). The lack of sex-specific cardiovascular disease criteria contributes to the underdiagnosis of women compared to that of men. For more than half a century, the Framingham Risk Score has been the gold standard to estimate an individual's risk of developing cardiovascular disease based on the age, sex, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes status, and the smoking status. Now, machine learning can offer a much more nuanced insight into predicting the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The UK Biobank is a large database that includes traditional risk factors and tests related to the cardiovascular system: magnetic resonance imaging, pulse wave analysis, electrocardiograms, and carotid ultrasounds. Here, we leverage 20,542 datasets from the UK Biobank to build more accurate cardiovascular risk models than the Framingham Risk Score and quantify the underdiagnosis of women compared to that of men. Strikingly, for a first-degree atrioventricular block and dilated cardiomyopathy, two conditions with non-sex-specific diagnostic criteria, our study shows that women are under-diagnosed 2× and 1.4× more than men. Similarly, our results demonstrate the need for sex-specific criteria in essential primary hypertension and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Our feature importance analysis reveals that out of the top 10 features across three sexes and four disease categories, traditional Framingham factors made up between 40% and 50%; electrocardiogram, 30%–33%; pulse wave analysis, 13%–23%; and magnetic resonance imaging and carotid ultrasound, 0%–10%. Improving the Framingham Risk Score by leveraging big data and machine learning allows us to incorporate a wider range of biomedical data and prediction features, enhance personalization and accuracy, and continuously integrate new data and knowledge, with the ultimate goal to improve accurate prediction, early detection, and early intervention in cardiovascular disease management. Background: Cardiovascular trials have revealed the positive impact of GLP‐1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1 RAs) on cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the specific effects of endogenous GLP‐1 on arterial stiffness and renal function remain understudied. This study aimed to explore the influence of endogenous GLP‐1 response post‐bariatric surgery on arterial stiffness and renal haemodynamic. Methods: Thirty individuals with morbid obesity and without T2D, scheduled for Roux‐en‐Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), were included. Clinical parameters, 3‐hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with serial sampling for glycaemia, GLP‐1 and insulin, carotid‐femoral pulse wave velocity (cf‐PWV), carotid distensibility coefficient (carotid‐DC) and renal resistive index (RRI) measurements were conducted pre‐surgery and 1‐year post‐surgery. Participants were categorized into high‐response and low‐response groups based on their post‐surgery increase in GLP‐1 (median increase of 104% and 1%, respectively, pre‐ vs. post‐surgery). Results: Post‐surgery, high‐response group demonstrated a greater reduction in cf‐PWV (p =.033) and a greater increase (p =.043) in carotid DC compared to low‐response group. These enhancements were observed independently of weight loss or blood pressure changes. High‐response group exhibited a reduction in RRI (p =.034), although this association was influenced by improvement in pulse pressure. Finally, a multivariate stepwise regression analysis indicated that the percentage increase of GLP1, Δ‐GLP1(AUC)%, was the best predictor of percentage decrease in cf‐PWV (p =.014). Conclusions: Elevated endogenous GLP‐1 response following RYGB was associated with improved arterial stiffness and renal resistances, suggesting potential cardio‐renal benefits. Background: Gut microbiota and its by‐products are increasingly recognized as having a decisive role in cardiovascular diseases. The aim is to study the relationship between gut microbiota and early vascular ageing (EVA). Methods: A cross‐sectional study was developed in Salamanca (Spain) in which 180 subjects aged 45–74 years were recruited. EVA was defined by the presence of at least one of the following: carotid‐femoral pulse wave velocity (cf‐PWV), cardio‐ankle vascular index (CAVI) or brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity (ba‐PWV) above the 90th percentile of the reference population. All other cases were considered normal vascular ageing (NVA). Measurements: cf‐PWV was measured by SphygmoCor® System; CAVI and ba‐PWV were determined by Vasera 2000® device. Gut microbiome composition in faecal samples was determined by 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. Results: Mean age was 64.4 ± 6.9 in EVA group and 60.4 ± 7.6 years in NVA (p <.01). Women in EVA group were 41% and 53% in NVA. There were no differences in the overall composition of gut microbiota between the two groups when evaluating Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio, alfa diversity (Shannon Index) and beta diversity (Bray‐Curtis). Bilophila, Faecalibacterium sp.UBA1819 and Phocea, are increased in EVA group. While Cedecea, Lactococcus, Pseudomonas, Succiniclasticum and Dielma exist in lower abundance. In logistic regression analysis, Bilophila (OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.12–2.6, p =.013) remained significant. Conclusions: In the studied Spanish population, early vascular ageing is positively associated with gut microbiota abundance of the genus Bilophila. Purpose: We compared the effects of low-volume combined aerobic and resistance high-intensity interval training (C-HIIT), combined moderate-intensity continuous training (C-MICT) and waitlist control (CON) on vascular health after 8-weeks of supervised training, and an additional 10-months of self-directed training, in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: Sixty-nine low active adults with T2D were randomised to 8-weeks of supervised C-HIIT (3 times/week, 78-min/week), C-MICT (current exercise guidelines, 4 times/week, 210-min/week) or CON. CON underwent usual care for 8-weeks before being re-randomised to C-HIIT or C-MICT. This was followed by 10-months of self-directed training for participants in C-HIIT and C-MICT. Vascular outcomes were evaluated at baseline, 8-weeks, and 12-months. Results: After 8-weeks, supervised C-HIIT significantly improved relative flow-mediated dilation (FMD) compared with CON (mean difference [MD] 0.8% [0.1, 1.4], p = 0.025). Although not significantly different from CON, the magnitude of change in relative FMD following 8-weeks of supervised C-MICT was similar (MD 0.8% [–0.1, 1.7], p = 0.080). There were no differences in haemodynamic indices, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), or aortic reservoir pressure between groups at 8-weeks. After 12-months, there was a significant reduction in haemodynamic indices (time effect, p < 0.05) for both C-HIIT and C-MICT, with no between-group difference. The reduction in cfPWV over 12-months was significantly greater in C-MICT than C-HIIT (group × time effect, p = 0.018). There was no difference in FMD over time or between groups at 12-months. Conclusions: Short-term supervised C-HIIT and C-MICT both increased brachial artery FMD compared with CON. Long-term C-HIIT and C-MICT were beneficial for improving haemodynamic indices, but not brachial artery FMD. C-MICT was superior to C-HIIT for improving cfPWV at 12-months. Purpose: Postmenopausal women experience augmented aortic hemodynamic responses to isometric handgrip (IHG) exercise and metaboreflex activation post-exercise muscle ischemia (PEMI). Relationships between endothelial function brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and aortic stiffness carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) with aortic pulsatile hemodynamics during IHG and PEMI have not been determined. The relationships between aortic hemodynamic responses to PEMI were evaluated. Methods: Aortic blood pressure (BP), wave reflection, and pressure of forward (Pf) and backward (Pb) waves were measured using arterial tonometry at rest, IHG at 30% maximal force, and PEMI in 30 (15/group) postmenopausal women with low (≤ 4.5%) and normal (≥ 5.5%) FMD. Hemodynamic responses were analyzed as the change (Δ) from rest to the last minute of IHG and PEMI. Results: Brachial and aortic systolic BP (SBP) responses to IHG were higher in the low vs normal FMD group (P < 0.05). Aortic SBP (Δ20 ± 8 vs Δ11 ± 7 mmHg), pulse pressure (PP) (Δ12 ± 8 vs Δ6 ± 4 mmHg), augmented pressure (AP) (Δ5 ± 3 vs Δ2 ± 2 mmHg), and Pb (Δ6 ± 4 vs Δ3 ± 2 mmHg) responses to PEMI were greater (P < 0.05) in women with low vs. normal FMD. FMD was negatively correlated with aortic SBP, PP, AP, and Pb (P < 0.05) responses to PEMI. cfPWV was not correlated with responses to PEMI. Context Leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, but its association with cognitive function remains unclear. Objective Our primary objective is to investigate the longitudinal association between LRG1 and cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Secondarily, we determine the causal relationship using Mendelian randomization (MR) and the role of arterial stiffness as a potential mediator. Methods T2DM patients (n = 1039; age = 64.1 ± 6.4 years) were followed-up for 5.3 ± 1.2 years. Plasma LRG1 was measured at baseline using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Baseline and follow-up cognitive function was assessed using Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). One-sample MR was performed with rs4806985 as plasma LRG1-associated single-nucleotide polymorphism. Mediation analysis was performed to examine if pulse wave velocity (PWV), an arterial stiffness index, mediated the association between plasma LRG1 and follow-up cognitive function. Results Elevated baseline natural log (Ln)-transformed LRG1 was inversely associated with baseline and follow-up RBANS total score with adjusted coefficients −1.38 (95% CI −2.55 to −.21; P =.021) and −1.38 (95% CI −2.70 to −.07; P =.039), respectively. Genetically predicted higher levels of plasma LRG1 was associated with lower follow-up RBANS total score with coefficient −7.44 (95% CI −14.14 to −.74; P =.030) per unit increase in LnLRG1. Higher PWV accounted for 27.7% of the association between LnLRG1 and follow-up RBANS total score. Conclusion Baseline plasma LRG1 was associated with lower cognitive function at follow-up in patients with T2DM, mediated by PWV. Objective: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of biologic therapy on cardiovascular risk factors in rheumatoid arthritis patients to determine its clinical efficacy. Methods: Relevant literature was systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Meta-analysis was conducted using standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis. Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were assessed. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: The meta-analysis revealed that biologic treatment in RA patients was associated with decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to controls (MD: -0.10, 95% CI: [-0.14, -0.05], P<0.0001). Subgroup analysis based on treatment duration showed heterogeneity and a potential decrease in total cholesterol levels after 12 months of treatment (MD = -0.03, 95% CI [-0.21, -0.15], P = 0.76). Biologic therapy significantly reduced triglyceride levels compared to controls (MD = -0.23, 95% CI [-0.37, -0.09], P = 0.001), as observed in subgroup analysis. Moreover, biologics effectively decreased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (MD: -0.10, 95% CI: [-0.14, -0.05], P<0.0001). However, biologic treatment was associated with increased inner carotid artery thickness (MD: 0.05, 95% CI: [0.03, 0.07], P<0.0001), indicating potential adverse effects on cardiovascular health. No significant effect on pulse wave velocity (PWV) was observed (MD: -0.23, 95% CI: [-0.80, 0.34], P = 0.43, I2 = 0%, P = 0.55). Conclusion: Biologic agents may improve lipid profiles in RA patients but could also have adverse effects on cardiovascular health. Further research is needed to comprehensively understand the impact of biologic therapy on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular outcomes in RA patients. Aims Methods and results Conclusion Impaired left ventricular–arterial coupling (VAC) has been shown to correlate with worse prognosis in cardiac diseases and heart failure (HF). The extent of the relationship between VAC and circulating biomarkers associated with HF has been scarcely documented. We aimed to explore associations of VAC with proteins involved in HF pathophysiology within a large population‐based cohort of middle‐aged individuals.In the forth visit of the STANISLAS family cohort, involving 1309 participants (mean age 48 ± 14 years; 48% male) from parent and children generations, we analysed the association of 32 HF‐related proteins with non‐invasively assessed VAC using pulse wave velocity (PWV)/global longitudinal strain (GLS) and arterial elastance (Ea)/ventricular end‐systolic elastance (Ees). Among the 32 tested proteins, fatty acid‐binding protein adipocyte 4, interleukin‐6, growth differentiation factor 15, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‐1, and MMP‐9 and adrenomedullin were positively associated with PWV/GLS whereas transforming growth factor beta receptor type 3, MMP‐2 and N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) were negatively associated. In multivariable models, only MMP‐2 and NT‐proBNP were significantly and inversely associated with PWV/GLS in the whole population and in the parent generation. Higher levels of NT‐proBNP were also negatively associated with Ea/Ees in the whole cohort but this association did not persist in the parent subgroup.Elevated MMP‐2 and NT‐proBNP levels correlate with better VAC (lower PWV/GLS), possibly indicating a compensatory cardiovascular response to regulate left ventricular pressure amidst cardiac remodelling and overload. Background: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c–f PWV) is a gold standard for the arterial stiffness measurement and important biomarker for the assessment of the cardiovascular (CV) risk. Recent studies have focused on 24-h measurements of arterial stiffness and estimated PWV (ePWV). The aim of this study is to analyze agreement of office c–f PWV measurements (SphygmoCor) with 24-h oscillometric measurements (Mobil-O-Graph and Arteriograph), and with ePWV. Results: This study included 154 patients with primary hypertension (average age 38.75 ± 12.65). Arterial stiffness has been measured in the office with SphygmoCor and 24 h with two oscillometric methods (Mobil-O-Graph and Arteriograph). ePWV was calculated using validated equation. PWV values obtained in office (SphygmoCor) showed higher average values compared to both 24-h oscillometric measurements of PWV and ePWV. The mean values of 24-h PWV measured by Arteriograph were higher compared to values obtained with Mobil-O-Graph. The measurement of PWV over 24 h using the Arteriograph is the most accurate among the methods that were compared with the office PWV measurements (accuracy of 0.989). However, the most precise method was the Mobil-O-Graph (0.631), and the highest degree of agreement also was shown with the Mobil-O-Graph (concordance coefficient correlation (CCC) = 0.447). The smallest deviation (TDI) and the highest probability of overlapping (CP) were observed with ePWV (TDI = 45.524, CP = 0.322, respectively). Conclusion: In our group of young treated mild hypertensive patients with low CV risk, we found weak agreements between cfPWV and 24-h PWV. These methods are not interchangeable. Cardio‐ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an innovative indicator of large‐artery stiffness, which is evaluated by the pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement. Mortality and morbidity due to cardiovascular diseases among the general public with high‐risk conditions such as hypertension are usually associated with arterial stiffness. CAVI modelizes the hazard of future cardiovascular events with standard risk factors. Additionally, the “European Society of Hypertension and Cardiology” included the aortic PWV assessment in managing hypertension in their updated guidelines in 2007. We conducted this systematic review to collect, summarize, and evaluate the evidence from relevant reported studies. A literature search of four databases was conducted comprehensively until February 2024. Cardiovascular events are the primary outcome of interest in this study, cardiovascular events that have been defined as major adverse cardiac events include “heart failure”, “stroke”, “myocardial infarction”, “cardiovascular deaths”, “stable angina pectoris”, “coronary revascularization”, and “unstable angina pectoris”. We included five studies with a 11 698 sample size in this systematic review. All five prospective studies investigated composite cardiovascular events as an outcome. Three of them revealed a statistically significant prediction ability of CAVI to assess Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Further analysis is required. Current evidence is insufficient to confirm the predictive power of CAVI in the assessment of cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients. CAVI is modestly associated with incidents of CVD risk. This research paper investigates the behavior of optical fiber pulses by studying the solitary wave solutions of the perturbed Chen–Lee–Liu (CLL) equation. The perturbed CLL equation is derived from the perturbed Schrödinger equation. Two analytical approaches for obtaining the innovative soliton-wave solutions are presented in this paper, and their reliability is examined by using a well-established numerical method. The accuracy of pulse wave analysis in an optical cable is demonstrated through a series of graphical representations. Our study introduces scientific novelty, as evidenced by the comparative analysis of our data with those of previous research papers. This research contributes to enhancing the understanding of the kinetics and physical behavior of pulses in optical fibers, which holds implications for the advancement of optical communication technologies. Background: The current clinical management of carotid atherosclerosis is based on the control of risk factors and medicine. However, the risk of adverse events associated with the medicine resulting in concerns and low medication compliance makes it necessary to seek a safer alternative therapy. This study assessed the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture as a treatment for carotid atherosclerosis. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaques were included and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive real acupuncture or sham acupuncture for 12 weeks. The follow-up period was 12 weeks. The primary outcome included carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), plaque score (PS), plaque volume (PV) and grey-scale median (GSM). Secondary outcome was pulse wave velocity (PWV). Adverse events results were recorded as safety outcomes. Results: From January 2021 to February 2022, 60 eligible patients were included. 55 patients (91.7%) completed the intervention and the 12-week follow-up and there was no statistical difference in demographics between the groups. At the end of treatment, the real acupuncture group had significantly reduced PS (P = 0.002), PV (P = 0.000), and improved GSM (P = 0.044). There was no significant difference in the reduction in cIMT (Left cIMT: P = 0.338, Right cIMT: P = 0.204) and PWV between the groups (the left BS: P = 0.429; the left ES: P = 0.701; the right BS: P = 0.211; the right ES: P = 0.083). Three mild adverse reactions occurred during the study. Conclusion: This study found that acupuncture had a certain effect on reducing the thickness and volume of carotid plaque and improving the stability of plaque with minor side effects. These findings suggest that acupuncture may be a potential alternative therapy for carotid atherosclerosis. Background: The Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) is a new index to evaluate visceral adipose tissue in the Chinese population. Arterial stiffness (AS) is a kind of degeneration of the large arteries, and obesity is an essential contributing factor to AS. Our study aimed to explore the longitudinal association between CVAI and the risk of AS and to compare the predictive power of CVAI, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) for AS. Methods: Between 2010 and 2020, a total of 14,877 participants participating in at least two brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measurements from the Kailuan study were included. The Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed to evaluate the longitudinal association between CVAI and the risk of AS. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was calculated to compare the predictive power of CVAI, BMI, and WC for AS. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, CVAI was significantly associated with the risk of AS. Compared with the first CVAI quartile, the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% CI of the second, third, and fourth quartiles were 1.30 (1.09–1.56), 1.37 (1.15–1.63), and 1.49 (1.24–1.78), respectively. The area under ROC curve of CVAI was 0.661, significantly higher than BMI (AUC: 0.582) and WC (AUC: 0.606). Conclusion: CVAI may be a reliable indicator to identify high-risk groups of AS in the Chinese general population, and the predictive power of CVAI for AS was better than BMI and WC. The COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness of the virus's long-term non-pulmonary consequences. This study examined the relationship between genetic polymorphisms of VEGF and cardiac dysfunction and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients recovering from COVID-19. This study included 67 patients previously diagnosed with COVID-19. VEGF-936C/T, VEGF-634G/C, and VEGF-2578C/A statuses were determined. Conventional echocardiography and arterial parameters assessments were performed at inclusion and at six months after the first assessment. For VEGF-936C/T, dominant and over-dominant models showed a significant increase in ejection fraction at six months after COVID (p = 0.044 and 0.048) and was also a predictive independent factor for the augmentation index (β = 3.07; p = 0.024). The dominant model showed a rise in RV-RA gradient (3.702 mmHg) (p = 0.028 95% CI: 0.040–7.363), with the over-dominant model indicating a greater difference (4.254 mmHg) (p = 0.025 95% CI: 0.624–7.884). The findings for VEGF-634G/C were not statistically significant, except for a difference in TAPSE during initial evaluation, using the codominant model. For VEGF-2578C/A, a difference in ventricular filling pressure (E/E'ratio) was best described under the recessive model. Our research suggests that the VEG-936C/T genotype may impact the baseline level and subsequent changes in cardiac function and subclinical atherosclerosis. Background: Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV), which measures vascular aging, is an independent predictor of cardiovascular death. Nevertheless, the relationship between ePWV and all-cause mortality among patients suffering from non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhages (NSAH) remains obscure. Consequently, the objective of this study is to ascertain whether ePWV exerts influence on the prognosis of individuals afflicted with NSAH. Methods: Through the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMICIV) database, 644 eligible participants were included. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve method was employed to assess the disparity in survival status between the low and high ePWV cohorts. The Cox proportional hazard model was employed to investigate the association between ePWV and inpatient mortality among critically ill patients diagnosed with NSAH. The Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) model was employed to examine the dose-response correlation. Subsequently, multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to identify independent prognostic factors. Lastly, the impact of ePWV on inpatient mortality across various subgroups was evaluated through stratified analysis. Results: Participants were categorized into two groups, delineated by their ePWV levels: a low ePWV level group and a high ePWV level group. Survival analysis unveiled that individuals with high ePWV exhibited a diminished survival rate compared to their counterparts with low ePWV. Following adjustment, low ePWV was significantly linked with a reduced risk of inpatient mortality among patients with NSAH (HR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.32-0.89, p = 0.016). Simultaneously, analysis employing the RCS model further substantiated a linear escalation in the risk of inpatient mortality with increasing ePWV values. Introduction: Some cardiovascular risk markers have been associated with alterations in sleep duration in different populations; however, there is little evidence in a healthy population. Aim: The aim of the present study was to analyze the associations between sleep duration and cardiovascular risk biomarkers, including advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) measured by skin autofluorescence (SAF), maximum carotid intima-media thickness (IMTMax), aortic pulse wave velocity (a-PWV), pulse pressure (PP), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), in healthy adults (EVasCu study). Methodology: The EVasCu study included 390 participants. Simple and multiple linear regressions were performed between sleep duration and cardiovascular risk markers. ANOVA analysis and ANCOVA analysis adjusted for various covariates were then performed after categorizing sleep into 6 h, 6-8 h, and >8 h. Results: 296 participants were included in the analyses (43.97 ± 12.60 years, 63.9% female). Simple linear regressions showed an inverse association between sleep duration and SAF, IMTMax, aPWV and PP. However, in the multiple linear regression with all the covariates, the statistical significance was lost. For its part, in the ANOVA analyses, sleep duration was also associated with the same parameters, but when performing the fully adjusted ANCOVA analyses, the statistical significance for SAF was maintained (p = 0.015), obtaining a difference of 0.223 arbitrary units (p = 0.017) when comparing the group <6 h vs. > 8 h. Finally, there was no association for LDL-C. Conclusion: An inverse association was found between sleep duration and APS, which is considered a marker of cardiovascular risk. Although prospective studies are needed, it is suggested that insufficient sleep may increase cardiovascular risk, which could be a key factor in future public health policies to promote health and prevent CVD. Background: Vascular health has been associated with cognition but related evidence is limited in Chinese. The objective of this study was to examine the association of vascular aging assessed by arterial stiffness and blood pressure with cognitive function in an unselected Chinese population. Methods: In the Tianning Cohort (N = 5158), indicators of arterial stiffness and blood pressure including carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), ankle-brachial index (ABI), pulse pressure (PP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire. We applied Poisson regression and logistic regression to examine the associations of vascular aging and blood pressure with cognitive function. Results: 76 (1.47%) participants had impaired cognitive function diagnosed by a MMSE score of less than 24 points. Participants with a higher level of PP were more likely to have a decreased score of MMSE (β=-0.0121, P < 0.001 for log-transformed pulse pressure) and a higher risk of having impaired cognitive function (OR = 5.95, 95%CI: 2.02–17.79, P < 0.001 for log-transformed PP). Per standard deviation increment in SBP was significantly associated with lower MMSE score (β=-0.0020, P < 0.001) and impaired cognitive function (OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.38–2.06, P < 0.001). No significant associations were found regarding other parameters. Conclusions: Blood pressure and hypertension were associated with cognitive function in Chinese adults. Background: Obesity has been linked to arterial stiffness, while no consensus was reached on the association. We aimed to clarify the association of general and central obesity with arterial stiffness by combining observational studies and Mendelian randomization (MR) study. Methods: Two cross-sectional studies were performed in UK Biobank and Fuqing Cohort, respectively. Two-sample MR study was conducted using summary data of GWASs from GIANT consortium and UK Biobank. General obesity and central obesity were measured using body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively. Arterial stiffness was measured by arterial stiffness index (ASI) in UK Biobank or branchial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in Fuqing Cohort. Results: Two observational studies found a consistent positive association of BMI and WC with arterial stiffness when adjusting for age, sex, education, smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, and LDL cholesterol. However, when additionally adjusting for metabolic traits (i.e., systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and WC or BMI), the association with BMI changed to be inverse. As compared to the lowest quintile group, the adjusted ORs across groups of second to fifth quintile were 0.93, 0.90, 0.83, and 0.72 in UK Biobank and 0.88, 0.65, 0.63, and 0.50 in Fuqing Cohort. In contrast, the positive relationship with WC remained stable with the adjusted ORs of 1.23, 1.46, 1.60, and 1.56 in UK Biobank and 1.35, 1.44, 1.77, and 1.64 in Fuqing Cohort. MR analyses provided supportive evidence of the negative association with BMI (OR = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.94–1.00) and the positive association with WC (OR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.08–1.20). Conclusions: Observational and genetic analyses provide concordant results that central obesity is independently related to arterial stiffness, while the role of general obesity depends on metabolic status. Background: No research report has been conducted to investigate the impact of oxidation balance score (OBS) on the estimated pulse wave velocity(ePWV).We aimed to examine the association between OBS and ePWV. Method: We evaluated data for 13,073 patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The exposure variable was OBS. The outcome variables was combination of ePWV and arterial stiffness. Results: We observed a significant negative correlation between OBS (Per 1SD increase) and ePWV in the gradually adjusted models. Based on the aforementioned results, a two-piecewise logistic regression adjusted model was subsequently employed to establish the association between OBS and elevated ePWV, and the inflection point was determined as 5. The increased risk of elevated ePWV (OR:0.70; 95%CI:0.51–0.94) gradually decreases with the increase of OBS on the left side of the inflection point; however, when OBS exceeds 5, this decrease in risk of elevated ePWV(OR:1.00; 95%CI:0.96–1.04) is no longer observed (P for log likelihood ratio test = 0.028). Conclusions: There exists a significant association between OBS and ePWV in the context of American adults. Introduction: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality. Aortic stiffness measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) has been shown to predict CV risk in the general population. The present study aimed to examine cfPWV values of patients with PsA compared to healthy controls and to evaluate associations of cfPWV with patient- and disease-associated characteristics, as well as with an established traditional CV prediction score of the European Society of Cardiology (Systemic Coronary Risk Evaluation; SCORE), for the first time. Methods: cfPWV and SCORE were evaluated in patients with PsA and healthy controls, along with clinical and laboratory disease parameters. Differences in cfPWV measurements between the two groups and associations of cfPWV with patient- and disease-associated characteristics were statistically evaluated. Results: A total of 150 patients with PsA (PSOCARD cohort) and 88 control subjects were recruited. cfPWV was significantly higher in the PsA group compared to controls, even after adjustment for confounders (padj = 0.034). Moreover, cfPWV was independently associated with disease duration (r = 0.304, p = 0.001), age (rho = 0.688, p < 0.001), systolic arterial pressure (rho = 0.351, p < 0.001), glomerular filtration rate (inverse: rho = − 0.264, p = 0.001), and red cell distribution width, a marker of major adverse CV events (MACE) (rho = 0.190, p = 0.02). SCORE revealed an elevated CV risk in 8.73% of the patients, whereas cfPWV showed increased aortic stiffness and end-organ disease in 16.00% of the same cohort. Conclusions: In the largest cfPWV/PsA cohort examined to date, patients with PsA exhibited increased aortic stiffness compared to healthy controls. PsA duration was the most important independent disease-associated predictor of increased aortic stiffness, next to traditional CV risk factors. cfPWV measurements may help identify subclinical end-organ disease and abnormal aortic stiffness and thus assist CV risk classification in PsA. Purpose: Evidence on the potential beneficial effects of anthocyanin-rich foods and supplements on cognitive performance is mainly based on acute or long-term studies in older adults. However, short-term studies focusing on a younger population are lacking. Therefore, short-term effects of Aronia melanocarpa extract (AME) supplementation on cognitive performance were investigated in healthy young adults. Potential underlying mechanisms were also addressed. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study was performed involving 35 apparently healthy young adults. Participants consumed AME (180 mg anthocyanins/day) or a placebo for 1 week, separated by at least 2 weeks of wash-out. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). Furthermore, arterial stiffness (carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity), retinal microvascular calibers (fundus photography), and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations were measured at baseline and after 1 week. Results: Participants had a mean age of 25 ± 4 years and an average BMI of 23.4 ± 2.7 kg/m2. Compliance was excellent and the study product was well-tolerated. As compared to placebo, movement time was significantly reduced by 4.8% within the five-choice reaction time test after 1 week of AME supplementation (intervention effect: – 12 ms; p < 0.05). Memory and executive function did however not change. Serum BDNF concentrations were significantly higher after AME supplementation as compared to placebo (+ 5.7%; intervention effect: 1.8 ng/mL; p < 0.05). However, arterial stiffness and retinal microvascular calibers were not affected. Conclusion: Short-term AME supplementation beneficially affected cognitive performance as attention and psychomotor speed improved. Serum BDNF concentrations were increased, but vascular function markers were not affected. Background: The widespread use of fluoroquinolones has been associated with the formation, dissection, and rupture of aortic aneurysms. Arterial biomarkers are established predictors of cardiovascular events. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of quinolones on arterial stiffness and aortic size for the first time. Methods: We studied 28 subjects receiving short-term (<15 days) antibiotic therapy involving quinolones and 27 age- and sex-matched subjects receiving an alternative to quinolone antibiotics. The follow-up period was approximately 2 months. The study's primary endpoint was the carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) difference between the two groups 2 months after therapy initiation. Secondary endpoints were the augmentation index corrected for heart rate (AIx@75) and sonographically assessed aortic diameters 2 months after the initial treatment. Results: Subjects had similar values of arterial biomarkers, blood pressure measurements, and aortic diameters at baseline. At follow-up, no significant change was observed between the two groups regarding the hemodynamic parameters and arterial biomarkers (p > 0.05 for all), i.e., cfPWV (7.9 ± 2.6 m/s for the control group vs. 8.1 ± 2.4 m/s for the fluoroquinolones group; p = 0.79), AIx@75 (22.6 ± 9.0% for the control group vs. 26.6 ± 8.1% for the fluoroquinolones group; p = 0.09), and aortic diameters. Conclusions: To our knowledge, FRAGILES is the first study to provide insights into the possible effects of fluoroquinolones on arterial biomarkers, showing that, at least in the short term, treatment with fluoroquinolones does not affect aortic function and diameter. An increasing number of children are conceived by assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Several studies indicated vascular alterations in ART children. However, limited data is available within the adult ART population. Therefore, this study investigated the overall vascular health of young ART adults in comparison to spontaneously conceived peers. In total, 16 ART subjects and 22 spontaneously conceived peers (22.06 ± 2.21 years vs. 22.00 ± 2.14 years, p = 0.194) were enrolled for the assessment of endothelial function, brachial blood pressure, central blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, carotid intima-media thickness, and blood lipids. No significant differences in vascular function were detected between the in vitro fertilization subgroup (n = 9), the intracytoplasmic sperm injection subgroup (n = 7) and spontaneously conceived peers. This pilot study suggests an unimpaired vascular function in young ART adults. In the future, multi-centric studies with a greater sample size are required to confirm the results of the current study and enable precise cardiovascular risk stratification of the adult ART population. This study utilized real-time shear wave elasticity imaging (SWE) and ultrafast pulse wave velocity (ufPWV) to assess carotid arterial stiffness, aiming to predict atherosclerosis risk in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). In this study, 181 patients with metabolic syndrome (MS group) were compared with 73 healthy adults. The MS group was divided into three groups: MS I group: CIMT was normal (CIMT < 1.0 mm, no plaque, n = 61); MS II group: CIMT thickening (1.0 mm ≤ CIMT<1.5 mm, no plaque, n = 39); MS III group: plaque group (CIMT ≥ 1.5 mm, plaque, n = 81). Concurrently, the group of 73 healthy individuals was designated as the control set (NC). Parameters assessed include carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), elastic modulus values of the carotid artery's anterior and posterior walls (Mean, Max, Min), pulse wave velocity at systole's commencement (PWV-BS), and pulse wave velocity at systole's termination (PWV-ES). Differences, distribution characteristics, and correlations across these groups were analyzed. A significant association was found between PWV-BS, PWV-ES, and arteriosclerosis severity, with these factors gaining importance as arteriosclerosis progressed. Notably, PWV-ES differences were significant across the four groups (p < 0.05). Both MS III and MS II groups exhibited higher PWV-ES values compared to the MS I group and controls. Statistically significant differences were observed between MS III, MS II, and MS I groups relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the Mean, Max, and Min values of the anterior and posterior carotid walls in the MS III group surpassed those of the other groups. Real-time shear wave elasticity imaging and ultrafast pulse wave velocity are valuable tools for assessing atherosclerosis risk in MS patients. Adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with the general population. HbA1c is the primary modifiable risk factor for CVD in T1D. Fewer than 1% of patients achieve euglycemia (<5.7% HbA1c). Ketogenic diets (KD; ≤50 g carbohydrate/day) may improve glycemia and downstream vascular dysfunction in T1D by reducing HbA1c and insulin load. However, there are concerns regarding the long-term CVD risk from a KD. Therefore, we compared data collected in a 60-day window in an adult with T1D on exogenous insulin who consumed a KD for 10 years versus normative values in those with T1D (T1D norms). The participant achieved euglycemia with an HbA1c of 5.5%, mean glucose of 98 [5] mg/dL (median [interquartile range]), 90 [11]% time-in-range 70–180 mg/dL (T1D norms: 1st percentile for all), and low insulin requirements of 0.38 ± 0.03 IU/kg/day (T1D norms: 8th percentile). Seated systolic blood pressure (SBP) was 113 mmHg (T1D norms: 18th percentile), while ambulatory awake SBP was 132 ± 15 mmHg (T1D target: <130 mmHg), blood triglycerides were 69 mg/dL (T1D norms: 34th percentile), low-density lipoprotein was 129 mg/dL (T1D norms: 60th percentile), heart rate was 56 beats/min (T1D norms: >1SD below the mean), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity was 7.17 m/s (T1D norms: lowest quartile of risk), flow-mediated dilation was 12.8% (T1D norms: >1SD above mean), and cardiac vagal baroreflex gain was 23.5 ms/mmHg (T1D norms: >1SD above mean). Finally, there was no indication of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction from echocardiography. Overall, these data demonstrate below-average CVD risk relative to T1D norms despite concerns regarding the long-term impact of a KD on CVD risk. Objectives: Partial thrombosis of the false lumen (FL) in patients with chronic aortic dissection (AD) of the descending aorta has been associated with poor outcomes. Meanwhile, the fluid dynamic and biomechanical characteristics associated with partial thrombosis remain to be elucidated. This retrospective, single-center study tested the association between FL fluid dynamics and biomechanics and the presence and extent of FL thrombus. Methods: Patients with chronic non-thrombosed or partially thrombosed FLs in the descending aorta after an aortic dissection underwent computed tomography angiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) angiography, and a 4D flow CMR study. A comprehensive quantitative analysis was performed to test the association between FL thrombus presence and extent (percentage of FL with thrombus) and FL anatomy (diameter, entry tear location and size), fluid dynamics (inflow, rotational flow, wall shear stress, kinetic energy, and flow acceleration and stasis), and biomechanics (pulse wave velocity). Results: Sixty-eight patients were included. In multivariate logistic regression FL kinetic energy (p = 0.038) discriminated the 33 patients with partial FL thrombosis from the 35 patients with no thrombosis. Similarly, in separated multivariate linear correlations kinetic energy (p = 0.006) and FL inflow (p = 0.002) were independently related to the extent of the thrombus. FL vortexes, flow acceleration and stasis, wall shear stress, and pulse wave velocity showed limited associations with thrombus presence and extent. Conclusion: In patients with chronic descending aorta dissection, false lumen kinetic energy is related to the presence and extent of false lumen thrombus. Clinical relevance statement: In patients with chronic aortic dissection of the descending aorta, false lumen hemodynamic parameters are closely linked with the presence and extent of false lumen thrombosis, and these non-invasive measures might be important in patient management. The association of diabetes with increased large artery stiffness is not definitively established. We aimed to describe the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) in participants with and without diabetes and whether the cf-PWV could vary among the different laboratory-based criteria used. A cross-sectional analysis using baseline data from 13,912 adults was used. cf-PWV as well as anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical data were measured. Diabetes was defined by previous medical diagnosis, medication use, fasting glucose, an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT), or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The prevalence of diabetes was 18.7%, higher in men than in women. After adjustment, participants with diabetes showed higher cf-PWV (men: 9.7 ± 1.7 vs 9.4 ± 1.7 m/s, P <.05; women: 9.4 ± 1.6 vs 9.1 ± 1.7 m/s, P <.05). We observed a progressive increase in cf-PWV as >1 laboratory-based criterion for diabetes diagnosis was reached. Also, participants with diabetes with alterations in any laboratory-based criteria had higher cf-PWV than participants without diabetes, regardless of sex. In summary, diabetes is associated with higher cf-PWV as is each laboratory-based parameter used for its diagnosis. These results support the strong consequences of glucose dysregulation on the vascular system and provide evidence to screen all parameters involved in glycemic metabolism to improve vascular health. The maintenance of tissue fluid homeostasis is an essential task in perioperative care. Fluid balance, when managed accurately and safely, can influence perioperative outcomes and reduce significant patient morbidity and mortality. Surgical and critically ill patients are subjected to disrupted physiology due to a combination of hypovolaemia, systemic inflammation and local glycocalyx damage, with resulting impairment of normal fluid regulation. To optimize fluid management and achieve adequate end-organ perfusion, cardiac output monitoring methods are increasingly employed to guide perioperative fluid therapy. In recent years, the additional importance of optimizing microcirculation has been of great interest. Fasting and perioperative fluid strategies are similarly integral in fast-track surgery pathways, despite aspects pertaining to volumes and types of fluid still up for clinical debate. Fluid burden commonly exceeds volumes consciously given due to hidden volumes used in drug delivery, and the importance of comprehensive overview on fluid prescription should not be understated. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment. Curcumin is a polyphenol that improves vascular and cognitive function in older adults; however, its effects on vascular and cognitive function in patients with CKD are unknown. We hypothesized that curcumin supplementation would improve vascular and cognitive function in patients with CKD. Eighty-eight adults diagnosed with stage 3b or 4 CKD (aged 66 ± 8 years, 75% male) participated in a 12-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to test the effects of curcumin (Longvida®, 2000 mg/day) on vascular and cognitive function. Our primary outcome was brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Our secondary outcomes were nitroglycerin-mediated dilation, carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), and cognitive function assessed via the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery. At baseline, the mean estimated glomerular filtration rate was 34.7 ± 10.8, and the median albumin/creatinine ratio was 81.9 (9.7, 417.3). A total of 44% of participants had diabetes. Compared with placebo, 12 months of curcumin did not improve FMD (median change from baseline was −0.7 (−2.1, 1.1) and −0.1 (−1.5, 1.5) for curcumin and placebo, respectively, with p = 0.69). Similarly, there were no changes in nitroglycerin-mediated dilation, cfPWV, or cognitive outcomes. Context The cardiovascular benefits of semaglutide are established; however, its effects on surrogate vascular markers and liver function are not known. Objective To investigate the effects of semaglutide on vascular, endothelial, and liver function in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods Overall, 75 consecutive subjects with T2DM and NAFLD were enrolled: 50 patients received semaglutide 1 mg (treatment group) and 25 patients received dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (control group). All patients underwent a clinical, vascular, and hepatic examination with Fibroscan elastography at 4 and 12 months after inclusion in the study. Results Treatment with semaglutide resulted in a reduction of Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) score, E fibrosis score, NAFLD fibrosis score, Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score and perfused boundary region (PBR) at 4 and at 12 months (P <.05), contrary to controls. Patients treated with semaglutide showed a greater decrease of central systolic blood pressure (SBP) (−6% vs −4%, P =.048 and −11% vs −9%, P =.039), augmentation index (AIx) (−59% vs −52%, P =.041 and −70% vs −57%, P =.022), and pulse wave velocity (PWV) (−6% vs −3.5%, P =.019 and −12% vs −10%, P =.036) at 4 and at 12 months, respectively. In all patients, ΔPWV and ΔPBR were correlated with a corresponding reduction of CAP, E fibrosis, NAFLD fibrosis, and FIB-4 scores. Conclusion Twelve-month treatment with semaglutide simultaneously improves arterial stiffness, endothelial function, and liver steatosis and fibrosis in patients with T2DM and NAFLD. Background: Skin-derived advanced glycation end products (sAGEs) have been associated with cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality in adults. We hypothesize that cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), body mass index (BMI) and vascular health are associated with development of sAGEs during childhood. Methods: In our prospective cohort study, 1171 children aged 6-8 years were screened for sAGEs, BMI, retinal arteriolar diameters (CRAE) and pulse wave velocity (PWV), using standardized procedures. To determine CRF a 20 m shuttle run was performed. After four 4 years, all parameters were assessed in 675 children using the same protocols. Results: Higher initial CRF levels were significantly associated with lower sAGEs (β [95 CI] -0.02 [-0.03 to -0.002] au, p = 0.022) levels at follow-up, although they showed a greater change from baseline to follow-up (β [95 CI] 0.02 [0.002 to 0.03] au, p = 0.027). Moreover, individuals with higher sAGEs at baseline showed narrower CRAE (β [95% CI] -5.42 [-8.76 to -2.08] μm, p = 0.001) at follow-up and showed a greater change in CRAE (β [95% CI] -3.99 [-7.03 to -0.96] μm, p = 0.010) from baseline to follow-up. Conclusion: Exercise and higher CRF may help mitigate the formation of AGEs during childhood, thereby reducing the risk for development of CV disease associated with AGEs-induced damage. Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the optimum and fine values of the number and transmission angles of tilted plane waves for coherent plane‐wave compounding (CPWC)‐based high local pulse wave velocity (LPWV) estimation. Methods: A Verasonics system incorporating a linear array probe L14‐5/38 with 128 elements and a pulsatile pump, CompuFlow1000, were used to acquire radio frequency data of 3, 5, 7, and 9 tilted plane wave sequences with angle intervals from 0° to 12° with a coarse interval increment step of 1°, and the angle intervals from 0° to 2° with a fine interval increment step of 0.25° from a carotid vessel phantom with the LPWV of 13.42 ± 0.90 m/s. The mean value, standard deviation, and coefficients of variation (CV) of the estimated LPWVs were calculated to quantitatively assess the performance of different configurations for CPWC‐based LPWV estimation. Ten healthy human subjects of two age groups were recruited to assess the in vivo feasibility of the optimum parameter values. Results: The CPWC technique with three plane waves (PRF of 12 kHz corresponding to a frame rate of 4000 Hz) with an interval of 0.75° had LPWVs of 13.52 ± 0.08 m/s with the lowest CV of 1.84% on the phantom, and 5.49 ± 1.46 m/s with the lowest CV of 12.35% on 10 subjects. Conclusions: The optimum parameters determined in this study show the best repeatability of the LPWV measurements with a vessel phantom and 10 healthy subjects, which support further studies on larger datasets for potential applications. Purpose: Cancer treatments exert vascular toxic effects that can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. Exercise training has the potential to prevent or reduce cancer treatment–induced damage to vascular structure and function. This systematic review with meta-analyses aimed to determine the isolated effects of exercise training on vascular outcomes in people with cancer. Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched on 20 September 2021 to identify randomised controlled trials, quasi-randomised trials, pilot and cohort studies. Included studies implemented a structured exercise intervention and assessed vascular structure and/or function in people during or following cancer treatment. Meta-analyses examined the effects of exercise training on endothelial function (via brachial artery flow-mediated dilation) and arterial stiffness (via pulse wave velocity). Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane Quality Assessment tool and modified Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Appraisal tool. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations framework was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Results: Ten studies (discussed across 11 articles) met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality of the included studies was moderate (71% average). Exercise improved vascular function when compared to control (standardised mean difference = 0.34, 95% CI (0.01, 0.67); p = 0.044: studies = 5, participants = 171), but not pulse wave velocity (standardised mean difference = − 0.64, 95% CI (− 1.29, 0.02); p = 0.056: studies = 4, participants = 333). The certainty of evidence was moderate for flow-mediated dilation and low for pulse wave velocity. Conclusions: Compared to usual care, exercise training significantly improves flow-mediated dilation (endothelial function) but not pulse wave analysis, in people treated for cancer. Aims: As a potential surrogate of carotid‐femoral pulse wave velocity, estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) has been confirmed to independently predict the cardiovascular events, but the association between ePWV and heart failure has not been well confirmed. Therefore, we performed this cohort study to evaluate the association between ePWV and risk of new‐onset heart failure. Methods and results: A total of 98 269 employees (mean age: 51.77 ± 12.56 years, male accounted for 79.9%) without prior heart failure who participated in the 2006–2007 health examination were selected as the observation cohort, with an average follow‐up of 13.85 ± 1.40 years. Area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) of ePWV was calculated in prediction of heart failure. The adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. The category‐free net reclassification index (NRI) was calculated to evaluate the reclassification performance of cardiovascular risk models after adding ePWV. The AUC of ePWV was 0.74 in prediction of heart failure. After adjusting for the traditional cardiovascular risk factors except for age and blood pressure, the risk of new‐onset heart failure increased by 35% [hazard ratio (HR): 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33–1.37] for each 1 m/s increase in ePWV. Subgroup analysis showed that ePWV was significantly associated with incident heart failure regardless of THE presence (HR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.31–1.36, P < 0.01) or absence (HR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.46–1.73, P < 0.01) of cardiovascular risk factors, male (HR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.31–1.36, P < 0.01) or female (HR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.38–1.51, P < 0.01), young and middle‐aged (<52 years) (HR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.41–1.58, P < 0.01), or middle‐aged and elderly (≥52 years) (HR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.21–1.26, P < 0.01). The addition of ePWV to the traditional cardiovascular risk model including age and mean arterial pressure could significantly improve the reclassification ability by 31.1% (category‐free NRI = 0.311, P < 0.01). Background: The COVID-19 has been shown to have negative effects on the cardiovascular system, but it is unclear how long these effects last in college students. This study aimed to assess the long-term impact of COVID-19 on arterial stiffness, endothelial function, and blood pressure in college students. Methods: We enrolled 37 college students who had been infected with COVID-19 for more than 2 months. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was used to assess endothelial function, while arterial stiffness was evaluated using the ABI Systems 100, including variables such as ankle-brachial index (ABI), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP). Results: Our results showed that FMD was significantly impaired after COVID-19 infection (p < 0.001), while cfPWV and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Simple linear regression models revealed a significant negative correlation between post-COVID-19 measurement time and baPWV change (p < 0.01), indicating an improvement in arterial stiffness over time. However, there was a significant positive correlation between post-COVID-19 measurement time and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) change (p < 0.05), suggesting an increase in BP over time. There were no significant differences in ABI and HR between pre- and post-COVID-19 measurements, and no significant correlations were observed with other variables (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that COVID-19 has long-term detrimental effects on vascular function in college students. Objective: To investigate the effects of 8-week aquatic and land high intensity interval training (HIIT) on hemodynamics and vascular function in middle-aged men. Methods: Thirty middle-aged men with low physical activity were selected and divided into 15 men (52.43 ± 4.11) in aquatic group and 15 men (52.74 ± 5.62) in land group by random number table. They performed HIIT exercise in aquatic and land 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Pre-test, inter-test and post-test respectively measure hemodynamics and blood vessel function. Results: (1) Body composition: After 8 weeks of exercise, weight, body mass index (BMI) and body fat rate (BF) were lower than before exercise (aquatic group: p < 0.01, land group: p < 0.05). The improvement of BF in the aquatic group was better than that in the land group (p < 0.05); (2) Cardiac function: After 8 weeks of exercise, stroke volume (SV), left ventricular end-diastolic volume (EDV), cardiac output (CO), and left ventricular fractional shortening (FS), were higher than before exercise (aquatic group: p < 0.01, land group: p < 0.05), heart rate (HR) and left ventricular endsystolic volume (ESV) were lower than before exercise (aquatic group: p < 0.01, land group: p < 0.05). The improvement of SV, HR, EDV, ESV, CO and FS in the aquatic group was better than that in the land group (p < 0.05); (3) Hemodynamics: After 8 weeks of exercise, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were lower than before exercise (aquatic group: p < 0.01, land group: p < 0.05), wall shear stress (WSS) and peak systolic velocity (PSV) were higher than before exercise (aquatic group: p < 0.01, land group: p < 0.05). Background: As key regulators of gene expression, microRNAs affect many cardiovascular mechanisms and have been associated with several cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation of whole blood microRNAs with several quantitative measurements of vascular function, and explore their biological role through an integrative microRNA-gene expression analysis. Methods: Peripheral whole blood microRNA expression was assessed through RNA-Seq in 2606 participants (45.8% men, mean age: 53.93, age range: 30 to 95 years) from the Rhineland Study, an ongoing population-based cohort study in Bonn, Germany. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis was used to cluster microRNAs with highly correlated expression levels into 14 modules. Through linear regression models, we investigated the association between each module's expression and quantitative markers of vascular health, including pulse wave velocity, total arterial compliance index, cardiac index, stroke index, systemic vascular resistance index, reactive skin hyperemia and white matter hyperintensity burden. For each module associated with at least one trait, one or more hub-microRNAs driving the association were defined. Hub-microRNAs were further characterized through mapping to putative target genes followed by gene ontology pathway analysis. Results: Four modules, represented by hub-microRNAs miR-320 family, miR-378 family, miR-3605-3p, miR-6747-3p, miR-6786-3p, and miR-330-5p, were associated with total arterial compliance index. Importantly, the miR-320 family module was also associated with white matter hyperintensity burden, an effect partially mediated through arterial compliance. Furthermore, hub-microRNA miR-192-5p was related to cardiac index. Functional analysis corroborated the relevance of the identified microRNAs for vascular function by revealing, among others, enrichment for pathways involved in blood vessel morphogenesis and development, angiogenesis, telomere organization and maintenance, and insulin secretion. Conclusions: We identified several microRNAs robustly associated with cardiovascular function, especially arterial compliance and cardiac output. Moreover, our results highlight miR-320 as a regulator of cerebrovascular damage, partly through modulation of vascular function. As many of these microRNAs were involved in biological processes related to vasculature development and aging, our results contribute to the understanding of vascular physiology and provide putative targets for cardiovascular disease prevention. Background: The association between arterial stiffness and outcome after endovascular treatment (EVT) is unknown. This study investigated whether arterial stiffness predicts post-EVT outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: This retrospective and observational cohort study included consecutive patients treated with EVT for acute ischemic stroke from June 2020 to November 2022. Arterial stiffness was assessed by brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity. Poor functional outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score ≥3 at 3 months. Results: The mean age of patients included in this study was 71.9 ± 11.8 years, and 57.3% were men. Poor functional outcome was present in 46.8%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that arterial stiffness was independently associated with poor functional outcome (odds ratio 8.640, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.581–47.228) after adjusting for age, initial stroke severity, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, device pass number, and successful recanalization. A nomogram based on the multivariable statistic model showed a better prediction of poor functional outcome compared to classic risk factor models without arterial stiffness (net reclassification improvement 0.529, 95% CI 0.186–0.873; integrated discrimination improvement 0.046, 95% CI 0.009–0.083). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) causes specific hormonal disturbances, such as variations in leptin and testosterone levels and function. These disturbances can promote errors in signaling interaction and cellular information processing and can be implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This study investigates the factors that affect leptin in CKD patients and examines how leptin is related to markers of vascular disease. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 162 patients with CKD in pre-dialysis and dialysis stages. We recorded clinical and laboratory data, including leptin, testosterone, and subclinical atherosclerosis markers like brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (ba PWV) in pre-dialysis CKD patients and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilation (NMD) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Leptin was significantly correlated with testosterone in CKD pre-dialysis stages (p < 0.001) and also in HD (p = 0.026), with adipose tissue mass in pre-dialysis stages (p < 0.001), and also in HD (p < 0.001). In women HD patients, leptin correlated with NMD (p = 0.039; r = −0.379); in all HD patients, leptin correlated with C reactive protein (p = 0.007; r = 0.28) and parathormone (p = 0.039; r = −0.220). Our research emphasizes the connection between leptin, adipose tissue, and testosterone in all stages of CKD. The carotid stiffness is an important factor in the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular small vessel disease. Our study aimed to evaluate the relation of the local arterial stiffness of the common carotid artery (CCA) to the hemodynamic forces and blood viscosity in patients with cerebral lacunar infarctions (LI).Twenty-two patients with chronic LI and 15 age-matched controls were examined. An ultrasound examination of the CCA intima-media thickness (IMT), the parameters of local CCA stiffness: distensibility (DC) and compliance coefficients (CC), α and β stiffness indices and pulse wave velocity (PWV) was performed. The local hemodynamic forces were calculated: circumferential wall tension (CWT) and wall shear stress (WSS). Whole blood viscosity (WBV) and shear stresses at shear rates of 0.277 s - 1 to 94.5 s - 1 were measured in patients and controls.Higher values of IMT, a significant decrease of DC and CC and an increase of α and β stiffness indices and PWV in the LI patients compared to the controls were obtained. A parallel significant increase in CWT and a decrease in WSS was found. An increase in WBV and a significant increase in shear stresses were detected. In the LI patients, the increased stiffness indices were associated with an increase in age, cholesterol and WBV at higher shear rates in the left CCA. In the controls, the IMT and stiffness indices correlated significantly with the hemodynamic factors and WBV in both CCAs, while the stiffness indices correlated with the hemodynamic forces in the left CCA.The results of the present study demonstrate different associations of the local carotid stiffness indices with the hemodynamic forces and WBV in patients with LI and controls. Background: Arteriosclerosis significantly impacts cardiovascular health. Pulse wave velocity has emerged as a valuable non-invasive method for assessing arterial stiffness. A negative association between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and cerebral blood flow has been reported, suggesting a link between arterial stiffness and reduced cerebral blood flow. We aimed to determine whether a correlation exists between cfPWV and blood flow in the internal carotid artery (ICA) and to assess the influence of age and body mass index (BMI) on cfPWV in healthy individuals. Methods: Thirty-six healthy subjects (23 males and 13 females) with no underlying medical conditions and who were not on regular medications were enrolled in the study. Arterial stiffness was assessed by measuring the cfPWV using Vicorder® software. ICA blood flow parameters were measured using high-resolution ultrasound. ICA diameter was measured using automated edge-detection software. Results: Significant positive correlations were found between cfPWV and age (Spearman's rho coefficient 0.33, p = 0.04), BMI (Spearman's rho coefficient 0.32, p = 0.05), and ICA diameter (Pearson's coefficient 0.35, p = 0.03). No significant correlations were observed between cfPWV and ICA peak systolic velocities (PSV; p = 0.22), or resistive index (RI; p = 0.76), nor between age and ICA diameter (p = 0.42), PSV (p = 0.09), or RI (p = 0.89). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate a positive correlation between arterial stiffness, age, and BMI in a healthy population, along with an association between increased ICA diameter and arterial stiffness. The lack of correlation between cfPWV and ICA blood flow parameters suggests that the ICA may dilate as a compensatory mechanism to mitigate the effects of increased arterial stiffness, ensuring optimal cerebral blood flow in healthy individuals. Arterial stiffness, a prominent hallmark of ageing arteries, is a predictor of all‐cause mortality. Strategies for promoting healthy vascular ageing are encouraged. Here we conducted a pilot study to evaluate the potential effects of low‐dose Terazosin on arterial stiffness. We enrolled patients aged over 40 with elevated arterial stiffness, defined as a brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) ≥1400 cm/s, who were administered Terazosin (0.5 and 1.0 mg/day) from December 2020 to June 2023. Treatment responses were assessed every 3 months. Linear regression analysis was used to characterise the improvement. We matched cases who took Terazosin for 1 year with Terazosin‐free controls using propensity score matching (PSM). Our findings demonstrate that Terazosin administration significantly affected arterial stiffness. (1) Arterial stiffness significantly improved (at least a 5% reduction in baPWV) in 50.0% of patients at 3 months, 48.6% at 6 months, 59.3% at 9 months, and 54.4% at 12 months, respectively. (2) Those with higher baseline baPWV and hypertension exhibited a significantly reduced risk of non‐response. (3) Terazosin was associated with a reduction of baPWV at 1‐year follow‐up (linear regression: β = −165.16, p < 0.001). This pilot study offers valuable insights into the potential significance of Terazosin in improving arterial stiffness and paves the way for future randomised clinical trials in combating vascular ageing. Burn patients require high-volume intravenous resuscitation with the goal of restoring global tissue perfusion to make up for burn-induced loss of fluid from the vasculature. Clinical standards of burn resuscitation are predominantly based on urinary output, which is not context-aware because it is not a trustworthy indicator of tissue perfusion. This paper investigates the initial development and analysis of a context-aware decision-support algorithm for burn resuscitation. In this context, we hypothesized that the use of a more context-aware surrogate of tissue perfusion may enhance the efficacy of burn resuscitation in normalizing cardiac output. Toward this goal, we exploited the arterial pulse wave analysis to discover novel surrogates of cardiac output. Then, we developed the cardiac output-enabled burn resuscitation decision-support (CaRD) algorithm. Using experimental data collected from animals undergoing burn injury and resuscitation, we conducted an initial evaluation and analysis of the CaRD algorithm in comparison with the commercially available Burn NavigatorTM algorithm. Combining a surrogate of cardiac output with urinary output in the CaRD algorithm has the potential to improve the efficacy of burn resuscitation. However, the improvement achieved in this work was only marginal, which is likely due to the suboptimal tuning of the CaRD algorithm with the limited available dataset. BACKGROUND: Although rehabilitation exercise is known to be beneficial for cardiovascular and mental health, it remains a daunting challenge for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) who rely on wheelchairs for mobility. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a 4-week para table tennis program in enhancing self-efficacy and health outcomes in adults with SCI. METHODS: A total of 39 SCI patients were included and divided into the experimental group (n = 18, a 4-week para table tennis training program) and the control group (n = 21). Frequency domain indices of heart rate variability (HRV) were used to evaluate the function of the autonomic nervous system. RESULTS: Following para table tennis training, there was a significant reduction in the physical stress index (PSI, P < 0.001), accompanied by shifts in autonomic regulation of vagal dominance. Additionally, the para table tennis training led to significant improvements in vessel state, differential pulse wave index, atrial elasticity, eccentric constriction power, remaining blood volume, and self-efficacy (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Para table tennis training results in favorable changes in sympathetic tone, enhanced self-efficacy, improved cardiovascular well-being, and an overall positive transformation in HRV. (1) Background: The objective of this study was to predict the vascular health status of elderly women during exercise using pulse wave data and Temporal Convolutional Neural Networks (TCN); (2) Methods: A total of 492 healthy elderly women aged 60–75 years were recruited for the study. The study utilized a cross-sectional design. Vascular endothelial function was assessed non-invasively using Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD). Pulse wave characteristics were quantified using photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors, and motion-induced noise in the PPG signals was mitigated through the application of a recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filtering algorithm. A fixed-load cycling exercise protocol was employed. A TCN was constructed to classify flow-mediated dilation (FMD) into "optimal", "impaired", and "at risk" levels; (3) Results: TCN achieved an average accuracy of 79.3%, 84.8%, and 83.2% in predicting FMD at the "optimal", "impaired", and "at risk" levels, respectively. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) comparison demonstrated that the accuracy of the TCN in predicting FMD at the impaired and at-risk levels was significantly higher than that of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Random Forest algorithms; (4) Conclusions: The use of pulse wave data during exercise combined with the TCN for predicting the vascular health status of elderly women demonstrated high accuracy, particularly in predicting impaired and at-risk FMD levels. This indicates that the integration of exercise pulse wave data with TCN can serve as an effective tool for the assessment and monitoring of the vascular health of elderly women. Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine if law enforcement officers develop subclinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) earlier than nonofficers and. if so, the extent to which conventional risk factors explain this difference. Methods: Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) was the marker of subclinical ASCVD. EPWX ASCVD risk factors, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and 1 0-year risk for ASCVD were compared among 408 law en- forcement officers anda civilian cohort. Results: EPWM 10-year ASCVD risk, and MetS prevalence increased significantly with age. All but the officers age 55 and older had higher ePWV coliort than the civilian cohort (P < 0,001), Ten-year ASCVD risk explained the most variability of ePWV (82 = 0.49, P < 0.001 ). Conclusions: Officers develop subclinical ASCVD earlier than nonofficers. Conventional ASCV[) risk factors only explain about half of this increase.
