8. Exploring Young People's Perceptions about Secondary School: Critical Issues and Improvements to Prevent Dropout Risk in Disadvantaged Contexts

Abstract

Through a mixed methods approach, this article explores young people's perceptions about critical issues in secondary school and the improvements being made to prevent dropout risk. The empirical data were gathered from a representative sample of young people (14-24) in a socioeconomically disadvantaged region in the European Union. A principal component analysis assessed the most significant indicators that influence young people's scholastic experience and effectiveness of education. A content analysis was applied to identify the key critical issues and possible strategies to support young people's school satisfaction. The findings reveal a set of key indicators: interpersonal relationships, learning process, teacher role, school management, the impact of new technologies.

20. Modelling demand for tourism in Italy

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to construct and estimate the demand for tourism for the Italian Province of Sassari, in the Sardinian island, and Italy as a whole. Several propositions are investigated. A systematic understanding is carried out for separating the domestic from the international demand of tourism to Sassari Province. The historic evolution of tourists' flows, the seasonality, trading-day effects and the empirical findings from the econometric investigation validate the separation of the two components. The sample period under estimation is from 1972 up to 1995. Three dynamic models are estimated at monthly, quarterly and annual frequencies for Sassari Province; analogies and differences are explored amongst the three models. On balance, the evidence indicates that the monthly and quarterly data models are superior to annual data models. However, one does not want to omit the annual estimation. Ideally, one should integrate and learn from each of the separate analysis. Some of the recently developed econometric techniques are used. A pre-modelling data analysis is undertaken for the economic series of interest. Seasonal and long run unit roots tests have given insight on the properties of the variables under study. The Johansen cointegration analysis is used in order to examine possible long run relationships amongst variables integrated of order one. Dynamic estimations are run in terms of the number of tourists for Sassari Province and monthly data expenditure for Italy. The LSE general-to-specific methodology is followed and a full range of diagnostic tests is provided. Short and long run income elasticities, negativity and substitutability are tested in the light of economic theory and other empirical studies existing in the tourism literature.

43. Política 'online' de precios del sector hotelero: una revisión y un caso de estudio regional

Abstract

This paper provides a literature review on hotel online pricing policy. The review covers pricing strategies from three different perspectives: demand, supply and regional characteristics. From the demand side, the reviewed literature shows that electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) influences hotel room revenue and overall performance. Also, e-WOM represents key information for hotel managers to understand customers’ needs as well their degree of satisfaction and loyalty. Notably, reputation, built on online customers’ reviews, has an increasing role in online pricing policy. On the supply side, research is still scarce and mostly anchored to the standard competition framework. The review reveals that hotel pricing strategy requires more innovation within a rather volatile and dynamic online market. Besides, through a statistical analysis, this paper generalizes further the finding that hotel online pricing policy is highly influenced by overall accessibility to and mobility within a region., Este artículo proporciona una revisión de literatura sobre la política de precios “online” del sector hotelero. La revisión comprende estrategias de precios desde tres perspectivas diferentes: demanda, oferta y características regionales. Desde el punto de vista de la demanda, la literatura revisada muestra que el boca a boca electrónico (denominado e-WOM) influye en los ingresos por habitación y también en el desempeño global. Además, el e-WOM se convierte en información clave para que los gerentes de los hoteles comprendan mejor las necesidades de los clientes, además de permitirles conocer su grado de satisfacción y lealtad. De manera notable, la reputación, basada en las opiniones de los clientes, tiene un papel cada vez mayor en la política de precios “online” de los hoteles. Desde el punto de vista de la oferta, son bastante escasas las investigaciones existentes y, en su gran mayoría, están ancladas en el marco de referencia estándar de la competitividad. La revisión realizada revela que la estrategia de precios “online” de los hoteles requiere de una mayor innovación, dentro de un mercado “online” dinámico que presenta cierta volatilidad. Además, a través de un análisis estadístico, este artículo generaliza aún más el hallazgo de que la política “online” de precios del sector hotelero está altamente influenciada por la accesibilidad general y la movilidad dentro de una región.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the dynamic efficiency of the hospitality sector in the province of Bolzano (Italy) to identify similar behavior of firms across the period 2002–2008. A data envelopment analysis is run as a basis to analyze the efficiency evolution of the firms by employing two complementary measures of distance (i.e. correlation and average distances). Via a hierarchical clustering approach, results show the existence of homogeneous groups with similar dynamical characteristics. Structural factors (e.g. size, number of stars and sub-sector of activity) are found to affect the evolution of hotel efficiency over time.
