Children are seen as beings who exist from birth through puberty, while teenagers are regarded as existing from puberty until around the age of 20 years. For a number of legal processes, including child labor, employment, the age of majority, rape, adoption, marriage eligibility, and situations where the birth certificate is unavailable, age estimation in children and adolescents is crucial. Despite the wide range of methods available, dental age estimation techniques that take into account tooth maturation are thought to be the most reliable predictors of chronological age in subadults. This is because genetic factors predominate and environmental factors, particularly between birth and age ten, tend to have little impact on tooth maturation. The eruption of teeth holds greater significance in the deciduous dentition, where genetic factors predominantly govern the process, compared to the permanent dentition. Conversely, tooth calcification serves as a viable indicator for estimating dental age in both primary and permanent dentitions. Current dental age estimation methods are based on age-related changes in teeth, such as tooth growth and development, changes that occur after teeth form, and biochemical changes. Therefore, in this review article, we will explore the several methodologies used for dental age assessment in children and adolescents.

Abstract Perceptual and cognitive processing relies on flexible communication among cortical areas; however, the underlying neural mechanism remains unclear. Here we report a mechanism based on the realistic spatiotemporal dynamics of propagating wave patterns in neural population activity. Using a biophysically plausible, multiarea spiking neural circuit model, we demonstrate that these wave patterns, characterized by their rich and complex dynamics, can account for a wide variety of empirically observed neural processes. The coordinated interactions of these wave patterns give rise to distributed and dynamic communication (DDC) that enables flexible and rapid routing of neural activity across cortical areas. We elucidate how DDC unifies the previously proposed oscillation synchronization-based and subspace-based views of interareal communication, offering experimentally testable predictions that we validate through the analysis of Allen Institute Neuropixels data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that DDC can be effectively modulated during attention tasks through the interplay of neuromodulators and cortical feedback loops. This modulation process explains many neural effects of attention, underscoring the fundamental functional role of DDC in cognition.

PurposeTo develop a predictive nomogram based on computed tomography (CT) radiomics to distinguish pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).MethodsA total of 195 PTB patients and 163 CAP patients were enrolled from three hospitals. It is divided into a training cohort, a testing cohort and validation cohort. Clinical models were established by using significantly correlated clinical features. Radiomics features were screened by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm. Radiomics scores (Radscore) were calculated from the formula of radiomics features. Clinical radiomics conjoint nomogram was established according to Radscore and clinical features, and the diagnostic performance of the model was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.ResultsTwo clinical features and 12 radiomic features were selected as optimal predictors for the establishment of clinical radiomics conjoint nomogram. The results showed that the predictive nomogram had an outstanding ability to discriminate between the two diseases, and the AUC of the training cohort was 0.947 (95% CI, 0.916-0.979), testing cohort was 0.888 (95% CI, 0.814-0.961) and that of the validation cohort was 0.850 (95% CI, 0.778-0.922). Decision curve analysis (DCA) indicated that the nomogram has outstanding clinical value.ConclusionsThis study developed a clinical radiomics model that uses radiomics features to identify PTB from CAP. This model provides valuable guidance to clinicians in identifying PTB.

Abstract Background Malnutrition is a common geriatric syndrome that is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes and poses significant harm to older adults. Early assessment of nutritional status plays a crucial role in preventing and intervening in cases of malnutrition. However, there is currently a lack of measurable methods and biomarkers to evaluate malnutrition in older adults accurately. The aim of this study is to investigate the independent correlation between serum levels of amino acids and malnutrition in older adults, and to identify effective metabolomics biomarkers that can aid in the early detection of geriatric malnutrition. Methods A total of 254 geriatric medical examination participants from Beijing Hospital were included in the study, consisting of 182 individuals with normal nutritional status (Normal group) and 72 patients at risk of malnutrition or already malnourished (MN group). Malnutrition was assessed using the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF). Demographic data were collected, and muscle-related and lipid indexes were determined. Serum amino acid concentrations were measured using isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The correlation between serum amino acid levels and malnutrition was analyzed using non-parametric tests, partial correlation analysis, linear regression, and logistic regression. Abstract Background Hypertension and frailty often occur concurrently, exhibiting increasing prevalence in the older population. In this study, we analyzed the frailty status among older adults with hypertension and the impact of their interaction on death risk. Method This prospective cohort survey study included data from older people in an urban community in Beijing collected between 2009 and 2020 using the cluster random sampling method. The participants were older adults who were ≥ 60 years old at the time of investigation and had lived at the place of investigation for > 1 year. The survey variables comprised those related to health and frailty status assessed during the 2009 baseline survey, along with death-related information as outcome variables in 2020. Additionally, a frailty index (FI) model was used to examine the frailty status among the older adults at baseline. The effects of hypertension prevalence on the age-related frailty changes as well as on mortality for varying degrees of frailty were further analyzed. Lastly, Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier curves were applied to evaluate the impact of the interaction between hypertension and frailty on death risk. Results Ultimately, 1197 older individuals aged between 60 and 101 years(average age at baseline: 74.8 ± 8.6 years) were included .Among them, 475 individuals were men (mean age:74.8 ± 8.8 years), and 722 were women (mean age:74.8 ± 8.4 years).Frailty was identified in 151 individuals, leading to a prevalence rate of 12.6%(151/1197),while hypertension was detected in 593 (prevalence rate:49.5% [593/1197]).A total of 443 deaths were recorded by 2020, resulting in a mortality rate of 37.0% (443/1197).Moreover, FI values and mortality rates were higher at any age in older adults with hypertension compared with those without hypertension. Background: In the setting of widespread COVID-19 vaccination and booster administration, there is an increased incidence of axillary lymphadenopathy identified during breast imaging.Purpose: To investigate how breast imaging radiologists manage unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy (UAL) after a recent ipsilateral COVID-19 vaccination.Methods: A 26-question survey was distributed to 12 California breast imaging facilities in June 2022. Results: There were 10 responses to the survey (83% response rate). All respondents considered recent ipsilateral COVID-19 vaccination relevant to the interpretation of UAL. Seven respondents (70%) also  considered non-COVID-19 vaccinations relevant. All respondents documented recent COVID-19 vaccinations, but 4 (40%) had no information for other vaccines. Eight respondents (80%) delayed screening after COVID-19 vaccination during initial vaccination efforts, and 3 (30%) still required or suggested delaying screening at the time of the survey. Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) categorization for UAL with no abnormal findings in the ipsilateral breast varied by facility and modality. BI-RADS categorization for UAL previously assigned to BI-RADS 0 or associated with suspicious ipsilateral breast findings varied, but practices tended to demonstrate a high level of suspicion unless the UAL showed improvement on follow-up imaging. For unchanged UAL on initial follow-up, 7 (70%) assign BI-RADS 3, and 3 (30%) assign BI-RADS 4.Conclusion: Despite available guidelines, there was no consensus approach to managing UAL after vaccination among academic and community-based breast imaging radiologists in California. Management was more uniform for a subset of patients perceived to be at higher risk for lymph node metastases, with most or all respondents recommending biopsy when there was  a suspicious finding in the ipsilateral breast, concurrent ipsilateral breast cancer, or concurrent malignant tumors not in the breast known to metastasize to the axilla.

BackgroundPoly (ADP-Ribose) Polymerase (PARP) inhibitors represent a novel class of drugs that hinder DNA repair mechanisms in tumor cells, leading to cell death. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and potential adverse effects of PARP inhibitors (PARPi) in the management of patients with advanced lung cancer.Materials and MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search for relevant studies in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov. We extracted primary and secondary outcome measures, including progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs), from the identified literature for subsequent meta-analysis and systematic review.ResultsThis study encompassed twelve randomized controlled trials, involving 3,132 patients with advanced lung cancer. In comparison to non-PARPi treatments, the administration of PARPi significantly extended OS (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.83–0.97, p = 0.006). However, the difference in PFS did not reach statistical significance.ConclusionIn summary, therapies incorporating PARPi provide a degree of benefit by extending OS in patients with advanced lung cancer. Nonetheless, further trials are necessary to furnish additional evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of PARPi in the treatment of lung cancer.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/, identifier number: CRD42023424673.

Abstract The vaginal microbiome plays an essential role in the reproductive health of human females. As infertility increases worldwide, understanding the roles that the vaginal microbiome may have in infertility and in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment outcomes is critical. To determine the vaginal microbiome composition of 1411 individuals (1255 undergoing embryo transplantation) and their associations with reproductive outcomes, clinical and biochemical features are measured, and vaginal samples are 16S rRNA sequenced. Our results suggest that both too high and too low abundance of Lactobacillus is not beneficial for pregnancy; a moderate abundance is more beneficial. A moderate abundance of Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus iners (~80%) (with a pregnancy rate of I‐B: 54.35% and III‐B: 57.73%) is found beneficial for pregnancy outcomes compared with a higher abundance (>90%) of Lactobacillus (I‐A: 44.81% and III‐A: 51.06%, respectively). The community state type (CST) IV‐B (contains a high to moderate relative abundance of Gardnerella vaginalis) shows a similar pregnant ratio (48.09%) with I‐A and III‐A, and the pregnant women in this CST have a higher abundance of Lactobacillus species. Metagenome analysis of 71 samples shows that nonpregnant women are detected with more antibiotic‐resistance genes, and Proteobacteria and Firmicutes are the main hosts. The inherent differences within and between women in different infertility groups suggest that vaginal microbes might be used to detect infertility and potentially improve IVF outcomes.

With the rapid development of new energy generation technology, the thermoelectric generation technology (TEG) can make good use of the waste heat generated in new energy generation. However, the change of temperature distribution will worsen the output characteristics and reduce the power generation efficiency of the TEG system. In this paper, a TEG array reconfiguration method based on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is proposed. In three different temperature distributions, ABC is used for dynamic reconfiguration of symmetric 9×9 and unsymmetric 10×15 TEG arrays. Three meta-heuristic algorithms, the genetic algorithm, the particle swarm optimization algorithm, and the bald eagle search are compared with the proposed method, and the temperature distribution of the TEG array reconfiguration by ABC is given. The results show that ABC can improve the output power of the TEG array, and the output power-voltage curves tend to show a single peak value. In addition, real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment based on the RTLAB platform is undertaken to verify the implementation feasibility.

Abstract Background The leaf epidermis plays an important role in the transmission of light and the regulation of water and gas exchange, which influences the photosynthesis of mesophyll cells. Small papillae (SP) are one of the important structural elements of the leaf epidermis. The mechanism of the effect that small papillae have on rice leaf photosynthetic performance remains unclear. Results In this study, a small papilla deficient 25 (spd25) mutant was isolated from japonica rice Longjin1. Small papillae were absent on the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces of the spd25 mutant and the silicon and cuticular wax content in the spd25 mutant leaves decreased. Map-based cloning and functional analysis revealed that SPD25, encoding a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rop, is a novel allele of OsRopGEF10. The spd25 mutant showed an increased water loss rate and reduced relative water content. The lower stomatal conductance in the spd25 mutant prevented water loss but decreased the intercellular CO2 concentration and net assimilation rate. The fluorescence parameters showed that the inhibited CO2 assimilation reaction feedback regulated the photochemical electron-transfer reaction, but the performance of Photosystem II was stable. Further analysis indicated that the excess light energy absorbed by the spd25 mutant was dissipated in the form of non-photochemical quenching to avoid photodamage through the optical properties of small papillae. Conclusions SPD25 regulates the development of small papillae on the surface of rice leaves, which play an important role in balancing photosynthetic gas exchange and water loss. This study deepens our understanding of the physiological mechanisms by which small papillae affect photosynthetic performance.

BackgroundGlioblastoma (GBM), with its high recurrence and mortality rates, makes it the deadliest neurological malignancy. Oxidative phosphorylation is a highly active cellular pathway in GBM, and NFYB is a tumor-associated transcription factor. Both are related to mitochondrial function, but studies on their relationship with GBM at the single-cell level are still scarce.MethodsWe re-analyzed the single-cell profiles of GBM from patients with different subtypes by single-cell transcriptomic analysis and further subdivided the large population of Glioma cells into different subpopulations, explored the interrelationships and active pathways among cell stages and clinical subtypes of the populations, and investigated the relationship between the transcription factor NFYB of the key subpopulations and GBM, searching for the prognostic genes of GBM related to NFYB, and verified by experiments.ResultsGlioma cells and their C5 subpopulation had the highest percentage of G2M staging and rGBM, which we hypothesized might be related to the higher dividing and proliferating ability of both Glioma and C5 subpopulations. Oxidative phosphorylation pathway activity is elevated in both the Glioma and C5 subgroup, and NFYB is a key transcription factor for the C5 subgroup, suggesting its possible involvement in GBM proliferation and recurrence, and its close association with mitochondrial function. We also identified 13 prognostic genes associated with NFYB, of which MEM60 may cause GBM patients to have a poor prognosis by promoting GBM proliferation and drug resistance. Knockdown of the NFYB was found to contribute to the inhibition of proliferation, invasion, and migration of GBM cells.ConclusionThese findings help to elucidate the key mechanisms of mitochondrial function in GBM progression and recurrence, and to establish a new prognostic model and therapeutic target based on NFYB.
