Magnetoelectric (ME) composite thin films are promising candidates for novel applications in future nanoelectronics, spintronics, memory, and other multifunctional devices as they exhibit much higher ME coupling and transition temperatures (Tc) than well-known single phase multiferroics discovered to date. Among the three types of multiferroic composite nanostructures, (2–2) layered and (1–3) vertically aligned composite nanostructures exhibit comparatively smaller ME coupling due to different shortcomings that restrict their use in many applications. Here, we study the morphological, piezoresponse force microscopic (PFM), ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetodielectric properties of 0–3 [magnetic nanoparticles (0) homogeneously distributed in ferroelectric matrices (3)] multiferroic composite thin films. The Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 (PFN)–Ni0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 (NZFO) particulate composite films were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition. These particulate composite thin films are completely c-axis oriented with very low surface roughness. We observed magnetic and ferroelectric Tc above room temperature (RT) for all composite thin films. The PFN–NZFO 0–3 composites exhibit large polarization, high saturated magnetization with low coercive field, and low dielectric loss along with magnetodielectric coupling at RT. The nucleation, nano-platelet growth, and optical properties under quantum confinement are investigated in the topological semimetal superlattice Bi2–Bi2Se3 as a function of thickness and Ar + ion pressure in sputtered growths. Quantum confinement and evolution of the band structure with a series of reduced dimensionality and surface terminations are studied by density functional theory corroborating the observed optical properties. An initial Volmer–Weber growth mode of nano-platelets is observed until a pressure-dependent critical thickness, where a transition to Frank–van der Merwe growth occurs. Nucleation statistics characterized using atomic force microscopy find the nearest-neighbor ordering of nano-platelets. Optical properties using ultraviolet to visible light spectroscopy measurements in transmission mode reveal a marked increase in optical bandgap below a nano-platelet critical volume reaching a maximum of 2.21 eV. Raman vibrational spectroscopy is performed, revealing softening of vibrational modes as the nano-platelet volume decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid development of new device miniaturization technology, there is invigorated interest in magnetic nanostructures for potential application in novel multifunctional devices. In continuation to our search for a suitable magnetic material having Curie temperature (Tc) well above room temperature for multifunctional applications, we have studied the dielectric, optical, magnetic, and resistance switching characteristics of Ni0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 (NZFO) thin films. The observation of only (004) reflection in the X-ray diffraction patterns confirms the c-axis orientation and high quality growth of NZFO thin films. The presence of mixed valences of Fe2+/Fe3+ cations is probed by X-ray photon spectroscopy, which supports the cationic ordering-mediated large dielectric response. Our investigations reveal NZFO to be an indirect band gap material (~1.8eV) with a direct gap at ~2.55eV. These nanostructures exhibit high saturation magnetization and a low coercive field with a ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition of ~713K. Magnetic force microscopy studies revealed the stripe-like domain structure of the investigated thin films. In addition, these thin films exhibit reliable and repeatable unipolar resistive switching characteristics. The observed high dielectric permittivity with low loss tangent, large magnetization with soft magnetic behavior, striped magnetic domain structure and reliable resistance switching in NZFO thin films above room temperature suggest potential application in memory, spintronics, and multifunctional devices. Rietveld refinement results of X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the phase formation of the material with cubic crystal structure (Fd3m). The frequency dependent ac conductivity behavior obeys the Jonscher's power law and is explained using the jump relaxation model. The observed behavior of temperature dependent bulk conductivity is attributed to the variable-range hopping of localized polarons. The correlation of polaron conduction and high permittivity behavior of NZFO is established on the basis of long range and short range conduction mechanisms. We report magnetoelectric coupling and Raman spectroscopic studies on [(1 - x)Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5) O3-xNi0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4] (x=0.20) PFN-NZFO composite. Apart from the presence of zone centre Raman active modes of the parent compound, some new peaks are observed in the low frequency region. The electric field controlled peak position (∼48 cm-1) suggests that this mode is of magnetic origin. From temperature dependent Raman scattering studies, temperature coefficients for phonons of different symmetries were estimated. Our measurements on electrical control of magnetic order and magnetic control of electrical order confirmed the existence of converse and direct magnetoelectric coupling in this composite at room temperature. We report the crystal structure, magnetic, ferroelectric, dielectric, and magneto-dielectric properties of [Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3](1-x)[Co0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4]x: (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) composites. Rietveld refinement results of X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the formation of these composites for all x values. All the composites show well-saturated ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis (multiferroic-composite behavior) at room temperature. With increase in Co0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 (CZFO) content an increase in saturation magnetization, and decrease in saturation polarization, remanent polarization, and dielectric constant are observed. The ferroelectric phase transition temperature increases with increase in CZFO content. All of the compositions undergo second-order ferroelectric phase transitions, which can be explained by Landau-Devonshire theory. The recoverable energy density (∼0.20 to 0.04 J/cm3) and charge-curve energy density (∼0.84 to 0.11 J/cm3) decrease with increase in the CZFO content. Here, we report the magnetic, ferroelectric, dielectric properties, and Raman spectroscopic studies of multiferroic [(1-x)Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3-xNi0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4] composites at room temperature. The phase formation of composites was confirmed independently from the X-ray diffraction and Raman studies. The room temperature magnetic studies reveal ferromagnetic like behavior of these composites in contrast to the paramagnetic nature of Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3. Furthermore, with increasing x, the saturation magnetization, remnant magnetization, and coercive fields are found to increase. The electrical characterizations of these composites reveal a decrease in remnant polarization and dielectric constant with increasing x. More importantly, the x = 0.2 composite is found to be a very good multiferroic material at room temperature among the composites and could be a potential candidate for future potential applications. Core-shell structured barium titanate-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (BaTiO3-PGMA) nanocomposites were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of GMA from the surface of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the grafting of the PGMA shell on the surface of the BaTiO3 nanoparticles cores. Transmission Electron Microscopy results revealed that BaTiO3 nanoparticles are covered by thin brushes (∼20 nm) of PGMA forming a core-shell structure and thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the grafted BaTiO3-PGMA nanoparticles consist of ∼13.7% PGMA by weight. Upon incorporating these grafted nanoparticles into 20 μm-thick films, the resultant BaTiO3-PGMA nanocomposites have shown an improved dielectric constant ( ε = 54), a high breakdown field strength (∼3 MV/cm) and high-energy storage density ∼21.51 J/cm3. AC conductivity measurements were in good agreement with Jonscher's universal power law and low leakage current behavior was observed before the electrical breakdown field of the films. Improved dielectric and electrical properties of core-shell structured BaTiO3-PGMA nanocomposite were attributed to good nanoparticle dispersion and enhanced interfacial polarization. We report the photovoltaic properties of doped ferroelectric [Bi0.9La0.1][Fe0.97Ti0.02Zr0.01]O3 (BLFTZO) thin films. Polycrystalline BLFTZO films were fabricated on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Al-doped ZnO transparent top electrodes complete the ZnO:Al/BLFTZO/Pt metal-ferroelectric-metal capacitor structures. BLFTZO showed switchable photoresponse in both polarities. The open circuit voltage (VOC) and short circuit current (JSC) were found to be ~0.022 V and ~650 μA/cm², respectively after positive poling, whereas significant difference in VOC ~ 0.018V and JSC ~ 700 μA/cm² was observed after negative poling. The observed switchable photocurrent and photovoltage responses are explained on the basis of polarization flipping in BLFTZO due to the applied poling field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polycrystalline BiFeO3 and (Bi0.90R0.10)Fe0.95Sc0.05O3 [R=La, Nd] ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. XRD studies confirmed the formation of single-phase compositions. The particle sizes obtained from XRD data were 43, 31 and 30nm for BFO, BLFSO and BNFSO, respectively. Dielectric studies revealed anomalies around 200°C and near the Néel temperature. The latter is attributed to the phase transition as an influence of vanishing magnetic order on the electric order usually observed in magneto-electric ordered systems. Complex impedance spectroscopy (CIS) technique was utilized to investigate the intra- and inter-granular contributions to the impedance in the studied compositions as a function of temperature and frequency. CIS studies revealed that the electrical relaxation process was temperature dependent and non-Debye type. AC conductivity studies revealed that conductivity in samples was mainly due to the hopping of oxygen vacancy between the oxidation states (Fe3+/Fe2+) of iron. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique has been utilized to characterize the nanoscale electromechanical properties of chemical solution deposited pristine (BiFeO3, BFO) and 5% Cobalt-substituted bismuth ferrite (BiFe0.95Co0.05O3, BFCO) thin films. Distinct PFM contrast was observed on the films'' surface both in out-of-plane and in-plane modes. Piezoresponse signal was larger in BFCO film than BFO and the former film also exhibited negative self polarization. The calculated self polarization factor was −0.94. Lateral signal (in-plane) changed its sign upon 180° sample rotation which ruled out spurious electrostatic contribution and confirmed piezoelectric nature of the effect. Square patterns were written by local poling and reversible nature of the piezoresponse behavior was established. Well saturated piezoelectric hysteresis loops were acquired with improved piezoelectric coefficient value in case of Co-substituted BFO film. The effect has been described on the basis of polarization rotation with doping. Magnetization of BFO film also increases with Co-substitution. The enhancement in magnetic and ferro/piezoelectric properties should be useful for multiferroic applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Multiferroic composite structures, i.e., composites of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric materials, can be envisioned to achieve the goal of strong room-temperature ME coupling for real practical device applications. Magnetic materials with high magnetostriction, high Néel temperature (T N ), high resistivity and large magnetization are required to observe high ME coupling in composite structures. In continuation of our investigations on suitable magnetic candidates for multiferroic composite structures, we have studied the crystal structure, dielectric, transport, and magnetic properties of Co 0.65 Zn 0.35 Fe 2 O 4 (CZFO). Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns confirms the phase purity with a cubic crystal structure with the (Fd3[combining macron]m) space group; however, we have found a surprisingly large magneto-dielectric anomaly at the Néel temperature, unexpected for a cubic structure. The presence of mixed valences of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cations is probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which supports the catonic ordering-mediated large dielectric response. Large dielectric permittivity dispersion with a broad anomaly is observed in the vicinity of the magnetic phase transition temperature (T N ) of CZFO suggesting a strong correlation between dielectric and magnetic properties. The evidence of strong spin-polaron coupling has been established from temperature dependent dielectric, ac conductivity and magnetization studies. The ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition of CZFO has been found at ∼640 K, which is well above room temperature. CZFO exhibits low loss tangent, a high dielectric constant, large magnetization with soft magnetic behavior and magnetodielectric coupling above room temperature, elucidating the possible potential candidates for multiferroic composite structures as well as for multifunctional and spintronics device applications.
