Abstract

The different measures taken by the competent authorities to tackle the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the acoustic environment worldwide, resulting in significant reductions of noise levels. However, most of the investigations mainly focused on the lockdown during spring 2020, in which all non-essential industrial and commercial activities were prohibited, being people requested to stay at home. The analysis of the data collected and processed by the wireless acoustic sensor network deployed in Milan, Italy, by the DYNAMAP project showed a significant drop of sound levels, mainly due to road traffic as well as other noise sources, denoted as anomalous noise events (ANEs). This work extends that research through a long-term global analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic effects from January 2020 to August 2021, including data clustering to identify local patterns of the sound environment of Milan. As a result of the first hard and subsequent second soft lockdown imposed by the Italian authorities, a double V-shape reduction pattern of the mean sound levels Lden (with and without ANEs) is observed, with maximum drops of around 6 dB and 3 dB, respectively, surrounded with similar progressive reductions in both pre- and post-lockdown periods, showing statistically significant differences. A complementary pattern is obtained regarding the detection of ANEs. The clustering of Lden indicators yields three different sound patterns in the second lockdown, both in terms of noise levels and ANEs, depending on sensor locations and traffic flow variations, unlike the first lockdown with a homogeneous behaviour throughout the city.

Abstract

We present a numerical study of the zero-temperature response of the Gaussian random-field Ising model (RFIM) to a slowly varying external field, allowing the system to be trapped in microscopic configurations that are not fully metastable. This modification of the standard single-spin-flip dynamics results in an increase of dissipation (hysteresis) somewhat similar to that observed with a finite driving rate. We then study the distribution of avalanches along the hysteresis loop and perform a finite-size scaling analysis that shows good evidence that the critical exponents associated to the disorder-induced phase transition are not modified., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Lymphedema (LD) is characterized by the accumulation of interstitial fluid, lipids and inflammatory cell infiltrate in the limb. Here, we find that LD tissues from women who developed LD after breast cancer exhibit an inflamed gene expression profile. Lipidomic analysis reveals decrease in specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) generated by the 15-lipoxygenase (15-LO) in LD. In mice, the loss of SPM is associated with an increase in apoptotic regulatory T (Treg) cell number. In addition, the selective depletion of 15-LO in the lymphatic endothelium induces an aggravation of LD that can be rescued by Treg cell adoptive transfer or ALOX15-expressing lentivector injections. Mechanistically, exogenous injections of the pro-resolving cytokine IFN−β restores both 15-LO expression and Treg cell number in a mouse model of LD. These results provide evidence that lymphatic 15-LO may represent a therapeutic target for LD by serving as a mediator of Treg cell populations to resolve inflammation.Specialised pro-resolving lipid mediators can reduce inflammatory responses and may be active in lymphedema. Here the authors show that in a mouse model 15-LO derived lipid mediators are reduced during inflammation and that a lack of the 15-LO producing enzyme aggravated disease and addition of 15-LO enzyme or Treg cells reduced disease. Abstract

Most legal stories are generally about identifying wrongdoers and vindicating the rights of victims, but what if legal wrongs are jointly-caused? It was Ronald Coase who first proposed this novel and unorthodox counter-narrative to the standard victim-wrongdoer story in law. Researching and writing in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Professor Coase--an obscure, middle-aged English economist at the time-- revisited a number of leading nuisance cases. Coase then used these old cases to create a compelling but controversial legal counter-narrative: compelling because Coase's parable forever changed the way many economists and lawyers see the law; controversial because harms are conceptualized as a "reciprocal" problem: whenever one party accuses another party of harming them, it is almost always the case that both parties are responsible for the harm--that is the essence of Coase's parable. 34. Clinical Characteristics, Activity Levels and Mental Health Problems in Children with Long COVID: A Survey of 510 Children

Abstract

Background The World Health Organization has recently recognized Long COVID, calling the international medical community to strengthen research and comprehensive care of patients with this condition. However, if Long COVID pertains to children as well is not yet clear. Methods An anonymous, online survey was developed by an organization of parents of children suffering from persisting symptoms since initial infection. Parents were asked to report signs and symptoms, physical activity and mental health issues. Only children with symptoms persisting for more than four weeks were included. Results 510 children were included (56.3% females) infected between January 2020 and January 2021. At their initial COVID-19 infection, 22 (4.3%) children were hospitalized. Overall, children had persisting COVID-19 for a mean of 8.2 months (SD 3.9). Most frequent symptoms were: Tiredness and weakness (444 patients, 87.1% of sample), Fatigue (410, 80.4%), Headache (401, 78.6%), Abdominal pain (387, 75.9%), Muscle and joint pain (309, 60.6%), Post-exertional malaise (274, 53.7%), rash (267, 52.4%). 484 (94.9%) children had had at least four symptoms. 129 (25.3%) children have suffered constant COVID-19 infection symptoms, 252 (49.4%) have had periods of apparent recovery and then symptoms returning, and 97 (19.0%) had a prolonged period of wellness followed by symptoms. Only 51 (10.0%) children have returned to previous levels of physical activity. Parents reported a significant prevalence of Neuropsychiatric symptoms. Conclusions Our study provides further evidence on Long COVID in children. Symptoms like fatigue, headache, muscle and joint pain, rashes and heart palpitations, and mental health issues like lack of concentration and short memory problems, were particularly frequent and confirm previous observations, suggesting that they may characterize this condition. A better comprehension of Long COVID is urgently needed..

48. Towards an effective model for low-energy deuteron interactions in FLUKA

Abstract

An overview is presented on recent efforts towards inclusion of low-energy (200 MeV) deuteron interactions in FLUKA, a general-purpose Monte Carlo code for the simulation of radiation transport. Differential cross sections for elastic deuteron break-up have been calculated within the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA), obtaining reasonable agreement with experimental data at various energies and scattering geometries at the 4-differential level. An attempt has been made to put the various partially integrated distributions in as convenient a form as reasonably possible for sampling.
