The demand for novel tissue grafting and regenerative wound care biomaterials is growing as traditional options often fall short in biocompatibility, functional integration with human tissue, associated cost(s), and sustainability. Salmon aquaculture generates significant volumes of waste, offering a sustainable opportunity for biomaterial production, particularly in osteo-conduction/-induction, and de novo clinical/surgical bone regeneration. Henceforth, this study explores re-purposing salmon waste through a standardized pre-treatment process that minimizes the biological waste content, followed by a treatment stage to remove proteins, lipids, and other compounds, resulting in a mineral-rich substrate. Herein, we examined various methods—alkaline hydrolysis, calcination, and NaOH hydrolysis—to better identify and determine the most efficient and effective process for producing bio-functional nano-sized hydroxyapatite. Through comprehensive chemical, physical, and biological assessments, including Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, we also optimized the extraction process. Our modified and innovative alkaline hydrolysis–calcination method yielded salmon-derived hydroxyapatite with a highly crystalline structure, an optimal Ca/P ratio, and excellent biocompatibility. The attractive nano-scale cellular/tissular properties and favorable molecular characteristics, particularly well-suited for bone repair, are comparable to or even surpass those of synthetic, human, bovine, and porcine hydroxyapatite, positioning it as a promising candidate for use in tissue engineering, wound healing, and regenerative medicine indications. Background: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis (NE) in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the effect of adenotonsillectomy (AT) and the width of the arches, and to compare them with control children without respiratory problems. Methods: Children from 2 to 12 years old were divided into three groups: children with OSA and NE (n = 51), children with OSA without NE (n = 79), and the control group (n = 168). NE was defined as at least one bedwetting incident per month. Arch widths were measured at the baseline and one year after. OSA was diagnosed by means of polysomnography, and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was obtained. Parents completed the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) to classify their children into those with and without NE. Results: NE was present in 39.2% of children with OSA compared to 28% in the control group (p = 0.04). After AT, 49% of the children with OSA and NE significantly improved. Both OSA groups had narrower arch widths than the control group (p = 0.012), with the NE group having the narrowest widths. NE is more prevalent in children with OSA and should be considered one of the first signs of breathing disorders. Adenotonsillectomy reduces NE in about half of the affected children. Objective: Thin supporting tissues may cause gingival recessions and esthetic problems in the anterior area. The objectives of this study were to present a simple and reliable radiographic technique to measure thickness of alveolar bone labial to mandibular incisors, and to establish a possible correlation of bone thickness with its tissue biotype. Method and Materials: A metal strip was placed over the gingiva of the mandibular incisor axis, and a perpendicular occlusal radiograph was taken of 51 patients. Patients in routine orthodontic practice before any orthodontic treatment was started were distributed into three groups according to their periodontal biotype (A1, thin with < 2 mm keratinized gingiva; A2, thin with > 2 mm; and B, thick with wide zone of keratinized gingiva), as described by Müller and Eger. Radiographs were scanned and thickness of gingival tissue and of bone at two levels (at the bone crest and at 3 mm below the bone crest) was measured to the nearest 0.1 mm. Measurements of soft tissue and bone thickness were compared and correlated. Results: Groups A2 and B showed a significant difference in bone thickness at the bone crest. Correlation of bone and gingival thickness was only found in gingival biotype B at 3 mm below the bone crest level only (R = 0.290; P < .001). No other correlation between bone and gingival thickness was observed in any group. Conclusions: The radiographic technique proposed in this study is a simple and reliable method for calibrating the amount of buccal bone in the mandibular anterior area. It is a cheap and fast diagnostic tool that may help determine the amount of buccal bone and gingival thickness, and therefore avoid excessive radiation to patients. Groups A2 and B showed a significant difference in bone thickness at the bone crest. Although not significant, group A1 showed the lowest values of bone and gingival thickness, whereas group B showed the highest bone and gingival thickness. Purpose: Unlike standard dental implants, the stabilization of orthodontic microscrews removed after treatment is done without osseointegration and achieved by several components: cortical bone thickness (CBT), microscrew geometry, and drilling depth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate 10 different microscrews and the influence of their geometric parameters with different CBT and drilling depths. Materials and Methods: The influence of geometric parameters in cortical bone was analyzed with a series of computational simulations with finite element models to obtain von Mises stresses and deformations in the microscrew when loaded with a perpendicular traction force of 1 N and considering the angle of incidence as a random parameter. Results: There was variability in the angle of incidence, with less clinical influence. Biomechanical parameters such as microscrew diameter, CBT, and drilling depth had significant influences on the results. At a drilling distance of 8 mm, narrow microscrews (Abso Anchor 1.2) showed maximum von Mises stress of 500.698 MPa and maximum deformation in the shank of 0.08549 mm. Microscrews with a diameter of 1.5 mm (Dentaurum, Jeil, Mondeal, Tekka, Spider) showed von Mises stresses ranging from 56.97 to 136 MPa and deformation between 0.0062055 and 0.0476 mm. Microscrews with a diameter of 2.0 mm (Jeil, Mondeal, Tekka) showed von Mises stresses ranging from 17.172 to 54.861 MPa and deformation of 0.000172 to 0.0161 mm. Conclusions: The shape and geometry of an orthodontic microscrew are highly important in its behavior. Optimal characteristics of a microscrew would include a diameter of 2.0 mm, a cylindric shape, a short and wide head, a short and wide shank, and threads of an appropriate size [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
