Abstract

Air pollution is a major problem today that causes serious damage to human health. Urban areas are the most affected by the degradation of air quality caused by anthropogenic gas emissions. Although there are multiple proposals for air quality monitoring, in most cases, two limitations are imposed: the impossibility of processing data in Near Real-Time (NRT) for remote sensing approaches and the impossibility of reaching areas of limited accessibility or low network coverage for ground data approaches. We propose a software architecture that efficiently combines complex event processing with remote sensing data from various satellite sensors to monitor air quality in NRT, giving support to decision-makers. We illustrate the proposed solution by calculating the air quality levels for several areas of Morocco and Spain, extracting and processing satellite information in NRT. This study also validates the air quality measured by ground stations and satellite sensor data.

Abstract

Major advances in telecommunications and the Internet of Things have given rise to numerous smart city scenarios in which smart services are provided. What was once a dream for the future has now become reality. However, the need to provide these smart services quickly, efficiently, in an interoperable manner and in real time is a cutting-edge technological challenge. Although some software architectures offer solutions in this area, these are often limited in terms of reusability and maintenance by independent modules, involving the need for system downtime when maintaining or evolving, as well as by a lack of standards in terms of the interoperability of their interface. In this paper, we propose a fully reusable microservice architecture, standardized through the use of the Web of things paradigm, and with high efficiency in real-time data processing, supported by complex event processing techniques. To illustrate the proposal, we present a fully reusable implementation of the microservices necessary for the deployment of the architecture in the field of air quality monitoring and alerting in smart ports. The performance evaluation of this architecture shows excellent results.

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown significantly in popularity, accompanied by increased capacity and lower cost of communications, and overwhelming development of technologies. At the same time, big data and real-time data analysis have taken on great importance and have been accompanied by unprecedented interest in sharing data among citizens, public administrations and other organisms, giving rise to what is known as the Collaborative Internet of Things. This growth in data and infrastructure must be accompanied by a software architecture that allows its exploitation. Although there are various proposals focused on the exploitation of the IoT at edge, fog and/or cloud levels, it is not easy to find a software solution that exploits the three tiers together, taking maximum advantage not only of the analysis of contextual and situational data at each tier, but also of two-way communications between adjacent ones. In this paper, we propose an architecture that solves these deficiencies by proposing novel technologies which are appropriate for managing the resources of each tier: edge, fog and cloud. In addition, the fact that two-way communications along the three tiers of the architecture is allowed considerably enriches the contextual and situational information in each layer, and substantially assists decision making in real time. The paper illustrates the proposed software architecture through a case study of respiratory disease surveillance in hospitals. As a result, the proposed architecture permits efficient communications between the different tiers responding to the needs of these types of IoT scenarios.

5. A Framework for History-Aware Hyperparameter Optimisation in Reinforcement Learning

Abstract

A Reinforcement Learning (RL) system depends on a set of initial conditions (hyperparameters) that affect the system's performance. However, defining a good choice of hyperparameters is a challenging problem. Hyperparameter tuning often requires manual or automated searches to find optimal values. Nonetheless, a noticeable limitation is the high cost of algorithm evaluation for complex models, making the tuning process computationally expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a framework based on integrating complex event processing and temporal models, to alleviate these trade-offs. Through this combination, it is possible to gain insights about a running RL system efficiently and unobtrusively based on data stream monitoring and to create abstract representations that allow reasoning about the historical behaviour of the RL system. The obtained knowledge is exploited to provide feedback to the RL system for optimising its hyperparameters while making effective use of parallel resources. We introduce a novel history-aware epsilon-greedy logic for hyperparameter optimisation that instead of using static hyperparameters that are kept fixed for the whole training, adjusts the hyperparameters at runtime based on the analysis of the agent's performance over time windows in a single agent's lifetime. We tested the proposed approach in a 5G mobile communications case study that uses DQN, a variant of RL, for its decision-making. Our experiments demonstrated the effects of hyperparameter tuning using history on training stability and reward values. The encouraging results show that the proposed history-aware framework significantly improved performance compared to traditional hyperparameter tuning approaches.

30. Shadows in the forest: Uncovering unusual colouration records in mammals from the Ecuadorian Tropical Andes.

Abstract

Variations in colouration patterns have been reported in numerous wildlife species, particularly birds. However, the increased use of camera traps for wildlife monitoring has enabled the detection of elusive species and phenotypic variations that might otherwise go undetected. Here, we compiled records of unusual colouration patterns in terrestrial mammals, documented through camera-trap studies over a 12-year period in the Llanganates-Sangay Connectivity Corridor, in the Tropical Andes of Ecuador. We identified colour variations in seven species of terrestrial mammals, including disorders, such as melanism, white spotting/ piebaldism, xanthocromism and progressive greying. Notably, we reported a high prevalence of melanism in wild populations of the clouded oncilla, along with observations on the species' activity patterns. Approximately half of the recorded clouded oncillas were melanistic. We detected significant differences in activty patterns between melanistic and non-melanistc clouded oncilla, with melanistic morphs showing a peak of activity between 3 a.m. and before dawn. The proportion of melanistic individuals suggests that melanism is widespread throughout the corridor. However, its impact on the species' fitness remains unclear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This project involves the evaluation and comparison of various methods for high voltage DC generation, within the context of DC arc experimentation. A method will be selected and subsequently implemented into a functional prototype, with the construction process and ensuing experiments being thoroughly documented to create an accurate simulation model of the real system. Additional auxiliary systems will also be designed to aid or automate the operation of the main system. During the project’s elaboration, the shortcomings of distribution transformer reliant methods come to light, prompting a change of HV generation method towards one involving highly inductive resonant transformers. In the end, this method proved fruitful as it was able to produce long-lasting lengthy arcs while being powered at a considerably low voltage

Abstract

Lightning flashes were observed in Barrancabermeja (Colombia) by two photometers centered at 337 and 777 nm wavelengths, a high-speed camera, and the Colombia Lightning Mapping Array. Both optical and VHF radio emissions of different lightning processes are investigated. Flash initiations by upward in-cloud breakdown present a first short optical pulse followed by a period of ~1 kHz breakdown propagation. The ratio remains at unity or below, associated with the transition to negative horizontal leader propagation. In flash initiations by a fast-stepped negative downward leader to ground, a dominance of the 337 nm radiance is found. Observations of downward leaders before ground strokes reveal that the luminosity measured by the photometers is dominated most of the time by the light coming from the cloud and not from the visible leader channels. One case of a visible cloud-to-ground channel with positive continuing current shows a high similarity in the evolution of the luminosity along the channel, 777 nm radiance, and the energy detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper from space. Finally, two types of recoil leaders have been observed: connecting and non-connecting. Whereas the measured 777 nm peak radiance is similar in both types of recoil leaders, connecting recoil leaders present about seven times higher 337 nm peak radiance. 42. Development of methods and tools for evaluation of the Lightning Imager of the 3rd generation of the METEOSAT using LMA and ASIM

Abstract

The objective of this project is to develop the necessary tools to evaluate the data provided by four different lightning detection instruments. The data obtained from the ground systems COL-LMA (Colombia Lightning Mapping Array) and e-LMA (Ebro Lightning Mapping Array) have been respectively compared with the space-based systems GLM (Geostationary Lightning Mapper) and MTG-LI (Meteosat Third Generation Lightning Imager) with the aim of characterizing the data obtained from each system by establishing associations between the lightning detected by each of them. The association of lightning has been carried out by establishing limitations of distance, time, and quantity of measurements to try to determine as accurately as possible whether the lightning detected by the two systems is the same or not. These limitations have been varied in different cases to find the values that provide the best detection efficiency. From the two studies conducted, for each pair of instruments (ground-based and space-based), results have been obtained that allow establishing conditions to improve the effectiveness of detecting different lightning events, with the maximum detection efficiency, that being 39.15% (for the comparison between LI and e-LMA) and 69.57% (for the comparison between GLM and COL-LMA). A range of high efficiency at altitude has been established in the case of COL-LMA between 7.5 and 10 km while in the case of e-LMA, the efficiency increases proportionally with height. The importance of establishing a high-efficiency area in the case of LMA systems to maximize lightning detection efficiency has also been determined. The better effectiveness of space-based systems in determining the initial detection time has been confirmed. In all cases studied, it has been verified that the median values of the evaluated characteristics agreed to establish the obtained data as valid.

Abstract

The expression “lightning never strikes twice” is questioned in this paper because, among the randomness of lightning impacts, some spots are hit even more than twice year after year. This article introduces the recurrent lightning spots (RLS) concept, which are locations periodically impacted by cloud-to-ground lightning every consecutive year over a certain period. RLS are investigated in two regimes, with markedly different lightning climatology but similar orography, for 10 consecutive years: Catalonia (North East of Spain, Europe) and Barrancabermeja (North Central Colombia, South America). Results revealed 148 and 916 RLS in Catalonia and Barrancabermeja, respectively. RLS in both regions are typically found to be related to tall structures, mountain peaks, and steep terrain. The method allowed us to identify those tall towers and orographic relief frequently affected by lightning that are not detected with the mere computation of the ground flash density. In the case of Catalonia, some RLS are found offshore. Abstract

Centrolenidae is a Neotropical family widely distributed in Central and South America, with its species richness concentrated in the tropical Andes. Several taxonomic problems have been identified within this family, mostly related to species with broad geographic distributions. In this study, we assessed and redefined the species boundaries of the Centrolene buckleyi species complex, and formally described two new species from the Andes of Ecuador. These new taxa are recognized by a combination of morphometric, osteological, acoustic, and genetic data. Following IUCN criteria, we propose that the two new species should to be considered as Endangered (EN), mainly because of their small distributions and habitat loss. The C. buckleyi complex provides insights into the biogeography of closely related Andean species. As in other glassfrogs, speciation in Centrolene seems to be mediated by the linearity of the Andes, where gene flow can be restricted by topography and, also, local extinctions.
