1. eROSITA X-ray Analysis of the PeVatron Candidate Westerlund 1

Abstract: It is unclear which fraction of cosmic rays above an energy of 1 PeV is accelerated by the observed Galactic PeVatron population. These sources' gamma-ray data is typically degenerate between hadronic and leptonic emission scenarios, which hinders their straightforward association with the cosmic ray population. Here, we aimed to distinguish between leptonic and hadronic particle acceleration scenarios for the PeVatron candidate HESS J1646-458, associated with the star cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1). We first studied the diffuse X-ray emission from Wd 1 to better understand if its origin is of thermal or nonthermal nature. In addition, we searched for X-ray synchrotron emission from the associated PeVatron candidate HESS J1646-458 to put new constraints on the magnetic field strength and the leptonic particle population of this source. We used data from eROSITA on board the SRG orbital platform to spectrally analyze the diffuse emission from Wd 1 and HESS J1646-458. For Wd 1, we compared a purely thermal model and a model with a thermal and a nonthermal component. Next, we analyzed the spectra of four annuli around Wd 1 which coincide with HESS J1646-458 to search for synchrotron radiation. We find that eROSITA data cannot distinguish between thermal and nonthermal source scenarios for the diffuse emission from Wd 1 itself. In the case of HESS J1646-458, we find no evidence of synchrotron emission. We estimated an upper confidence bound of the synchrotron flux up to 40' around Wd 1 of 1.9e-3 keV-1 cm-2 s-1, which we used to study the spectral energy distribution of the source. From this, we obtained an upper 1 sigma bound on the magnetic field strength of HESS J1646-458 of 7 uG. This is compatible with a previous estimate in the literature for a fully leptonic source scenario. 2. A look at the high energy aspects of the supernova remnant G309.8+00.0 with eROSITA and Fermi-LAT

Abstract: Supernova remnant (SNR) detection along the Galactic plane poses a number of challenges. The SNR G309.8+00.0 lies exactly on the Galactic plane, with its center coinciding with galactic latitude (b)=0 deg. In this paper we report the first detection of the SNR G309.8+00.0 in X-rays and $\gamma$ rays, using stacked data from the first four consecutive extended ROentgen Survey Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) -- on board the Russian-German Spektrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) -- all-sky surveys (eRASS:4) and $\sim15.5$ yr of Pass 8 data recorded from Fermi-LAT, respectively. The SNR appears to have an elliptical shape of 0.43 x 0.32 deg in size in both radio synchrotron and X-ray data. The SNR's emission exhibits a shell-like morphology and good spatial correlation in both energy bands. The X-ray emission was solely detected in the 1-2 keV energy band (subject to strong absorption at soft X-rays) and the spectral analysis results of eRASS:4 data present a purely thermal SNR with a high absorption column density $3.1_{-0.5}^{+0.7}\cdot10^{22}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ and a temperature of $0.34\pm0.1$ keV. In combination with optical extinction data, the absorption column density values derived from the remnant's spectral analysis support a remnant's distance greater than 6 kpc, rather than a 3.12 kpc distance as reported in the literature, and yield an age of $1-3.5\cdot10^5$ yr. Employing $\sim15.5$ yr of Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray data at and around the remnant's vicinity, we confirm the detection of the to-date unidentified 4FGL J1349.5-6206c source that can either be modeled as a single source or a conglomerate of multiple distinct source components and we argue that the SNR G309.8+00.0 likely represents at least a significant portion (if not all) of the emission from the 4FGL J1349.5-6206c $\gamma$-ray source., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics on June 5. 2024, 11 pages, 7 figures

3. H.E.S.S.: The High Energy Stereoscopic System

Abstract: The High Energy Stereoscopic System H.E.S.S. is an array of Cherenkov Telescopes located in the Khomas Highlands in Namibia. H.E.S.S. started operations in 2003 and has been operated very successfully since then. With its location in the Southern hemisphere, the system provides a privileged view of the Milky Way and the Galactic center region. With H.E.S.S., a large variety of new TeV emitters has been discovered, both in our Galaxy and in extragalactic space. We provide a description of the individual telescopes and of the system as a whole, and review the scientific highlights that have been achieved with the instrument., Comment: 38 pages, 4 figures. 4. Quality assurance of actuators for the Medium-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a future ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy providing unparalleled sensitivity in the energy range from 20 GeV up to 300 TeV. CTA will consist of telescopes with three different sizes. The Medium-Sized Telescopes (MSTs) will have 12 m reflectors with a tessellated mirror design of 86 mirror facets each. Each mirror facet is mounted on the mirror support structure with two actuators that are adjustable in length to align the mirrors, and a freely rotating fixpoint. Image resolution and pointing accuracy constraints impose limits on the backlash and deformation of the actuators and the fixpoint under various weight and wind loads. In this contribution, the test stand to measure the backlash and deformation behaviour of actuators and fixpoints is described and the measurement procedure is explained., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. 5. X-ray counterpart detection and gamma-ray analysis of the SNR G279.0+01.1 with eROSITA and Fermi-LAT

Abstract: A thorough inspection of known Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs) along the Galactic plane with SRG/eROSITA yielded the detection of the X-ray counterpart of the SNR G279.0+01.1. The SNR is located just 1.5 deg above the Galactic plane. Its X-ray emission emerges as an incomplete, partial shell of $\sim$3 deg angular extension. It is strongly correlated to the fragmented shell-type morphology of its radio continuum emission. The X-ray spatial morphology of the SNR seems to be linked to the presence of dust clouds in the surroundings. The majority of its X-ray emission is soft (exhibiting strong O, Ne and Mg lines), and occurs in a narrow range of energies between 0.3 and 1.5 keV. Above 2.0 keV the remnant remains undetected. The remnant's X-ray spectrum is of purely thermal nature. Constraining the X-ray absorption column to values which are consistent with optical extinction data from the remnant's location favours non-equilibrium over equilibrium models. A non-equilibrium two-temperature plasma model of $\mathrm{kT}\sim0.3$~keV and $\mathrm{kT}\sim0.6$~keV, and an absorption column density of $\mathrm{N_{H}}\sim0.3~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ describes the spectrum of the entire remnant well. Significant temperature variations across the remnant have been detected. Employing 14.5 years of Fermi-LAT data, we carried out a comprehensive study of the extended GeV source 4FGL J1000.0-5312e. By refining and properly modeling the GeV excess originating from the location of the remnant, we conclude that the emission is likely related to the remnant itself rather than being co-located by chance. We also discuss implications of the new X-ray data to the estimates of the distance and age of the remnant.

6. Study of X-ray emission from the S147 nebula with SRG/eROSITA: X-ray imaging, spectral characterization, and a multiwavelength picture

Abstract: Simeis 147 (S147, G180.0-01.7, "Spaghetti nebula") is a supernova remnant (SNR) extensively studied across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to giga-electronvolt $\gamma$-rays, except in X-rays. Here, we report the first detection of significant X-ray emission from the entire SNR using data of the extended ROentgen Survey Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) onboard the Russian-German Spektrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG). The object is located at the Galactic anticenter, and its 3 deg size classifies it among the largest SNRs ever detected in X-rays. By employing $\sim$15 years of Fermi-LAT data, our study confirms the association of the remnant with a spatially coincident diffuse giga-electronvolt excess, namely 4FGL J0540.3+2756e or FGES J0537.6+2751. The X-ray emission is purely thermal, exhibiting strong O, Ne, and Mg lines; whereas it lacks heavier-Z elements. The emission is mainly confined to the 0.5-1.0 keV band; no significant emission is detected above 2.0 keV. Both a collisional plasma model in equilibrium and a model of nonequilibrium collisional plasma can fit the total spectrum. While the equilibrium model -- though statistically disfavored -- cannot be excluded by X-ray fitting, only the absorption column of the nonequilibrium model is consistent with expectations derived from optical extinction data. Adopting an expansion in a homogeneous medium of typical interstellar medium (ISM) density, the general SNR properties are broadly consistent with an expansion model that yields an estimated age of $\sim0.66-2\times10^{5}$ yr, that is a rather old age. The preference for an X-ray-emitting plasma in nonequilibrium, however, adds to the observational evidence that favors a substantially younger age. Abstract: The Simeis~147 nebula (S147), particularly well known for a spectacular net of ${\rm H}_\alpha$-emitting filaments, is often considered one of the largest and oldest known supernova remnants in the Milky Way. Here, and in a companion paper, we present studies of X-ray emission from the S147 nebula using the data of SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey observations. In this paper, we argue that many inferred properties of the X-ray emitting gas are broadly consistent with a scenario of the supernova explosion in a low-density cavity, e.g. a wind-blown-bubble. This scenario assumes that a $\sim 20\,{\rm M_\odot}$ progenitor star has had small velocity with respect to the ambient ISM, so it stayed close to the center of a dense shell created during its Main Sequence evolution till the moment of the core-collapse explosion. The ejecta first propagate through the low-density cavity until they collide with the dense shell, and only then the reverse shock goes deeper into the ejecta and powers the observed X-ray emission of the nebula. The part of the remnant inside the dense shell remains non-radiative till now and, plausibly, in a state with $T_e

8. eROSITA studies of the Carina Nebula

Abstract: During the first four all-sky surveys eRASS:4 carried out from December 2019 to 2021, the extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (Spektr-RG, SRG) observed the Galactic HII region Carina nebula. We analysed the eRASS:4 data to study the distribution and the spectral properties of the hot interstellar plasma and the bright stellar sources in the Carina nebula. Spectral extraction regions of the diffuse emission were defined based on X-ray spectral morphology and multi-wavelength data. The spectra were fit with a combination of thermal and non-thermal emission models. X-ray bright point sources in the Carina nebula are the colliding wind binary $\eta$ Car, several O stars, and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. We extracted the spectrum of the brightest stellar sources, which can be well fit with a multi-component thermal plasma model. The spectra of the diffuse emission in the brighter parts of the Carina nebula is well reproduced by two thermal models, a lower-temperature component ($\sim$0.2 keV) and a higher-temperature component (0.6 - 0.8 keV). An additional non-thermal component dominates the emission above $\sim$1 keV in the central region around $\eta$ Car and the other massive stars. Significant orbital variation of the X-ray flux was measured for $\eta$ Car, WR22 and WR25. $\eta$ Car requires an additional time-variable thermal component in the spectral model, which is associated to the wind-wind-collision zone. Properties like temperature, pressure, and luminosity of the X-ray emitting plasma in the Carina nebula derived from the eROSITA data are consistent with theoretical calculations of emission from superbubbles. It confirms that the X-ray emission is caused by the hot plasma inside the Carina nebula which has been shocked-heated by the stellar winds of the massive stars, in particular, of $\eta$ Car., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 10. Expansion and ongoing cosmic ray acceleration in HESS J1731-347

Abstract: Diffusive shock acceleration in supernova remnants (SNRs) is considered one of the prime mechanisms for Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) acceleration. It is still unclear, however, whether SNRs can contribute to GCR spectrum up to the ``knee'' (1\,PeV) band as acceleration to such energies requires an efficient magnetic field amplification process around the shocks. The presence of such a process is challenging to test observationally. Here we report on the detection of fast variability of the X-ray synchrotron emission from the forward shock in the supernova remnant HESS J1731-347, which implies the presence of a strong ($\sim$0.2\,mG) field exceeding background values and thus of effective field amplification. We also report a direct measurement of the high forward shock expansion velocity of 4000-5500\,km/s confirming that the SNR is expanding in a tenuous wind bubble blown by the SNR progenitor, is significantly younger (2.4-9\,kyr) than previously assumed by some authors, and only recently started interaction with the dense material outside the bubble. Abstract: Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) detect very high energetic (VHE) gamma rays. They observe the Cherenkov light emitted in electromagnetic shower cascades that gamma rays induce in the atmosphere. A precise reconstruction of the primary photon energy and the source flux depends heavily on accurate Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the shower propagation and the detector response, and therefore also on adequate assumptions about the atmosphere at the site and time of a measurement. Here, we present the results of an extensive validation of the MC simulations for an analysis chain of the H.E.S.S. experiment with special focus on the recently installed FlashCam camera on the large 28 m telescope. One goal of this work was to create a flexible and easy-to-use framework to facilitate the detailed validation of MC simulations also for past and future phases of the H.E.S.S. experiment. Guided by the underlying physics, the detector simulation and the atmospheric transmission profiles were gradually improved until low level parameters such as cosmic ray (CR) trigger rates matched within a few percent between simulations and observational data. This led to instrument response functions (IRFs) with which the analysis of current H.E.S.S. data can ultimately be carried out within percent accuracy, substantially improving earlier simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract: Kepler's supernova remnant (SNR) which is produced by the most recent naked-eye supernova in our Galaxy is one of the best studied SNRs, but its gamma-ray detection has eluded us so far. Observations with modern imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) have enlarged the knowledge about nearby SNRs with ages younger than 500 years by establishing Cassiopeia A and Tycho's SNRs as very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources and setting a lower limit on the distance to Kepler's SNR. This SNR is significantly more distant than the other two and expected to be one of the faintest gamma-ray sources within reach of the IACT arrays of this generation. We report strong evidence for a VHE signal from Kepler's SNR based on deep observations of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) with an exposure of 152 hours, including 122 hours accumulated in 2017-2020. 16. Multi-wavelength properties of the 2021 periastron passage of PSR B1259-63

Abstract: PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system hosting a radio pulsar orbiting around a O9.5Ve star, LS 2883, with a period of ~3.4 years. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the LS 2883 outflow leads to unpulsed broadband emission in the radio, X-ray, GeV, and TeV domains. One of the most unusual features of the system is an outburst at GeV energies around the periastron, during which the energy release substantially exceeds the spin down luminosity under the assumption of the isotropic energy release. In this paper, we present the first results of a recent multi-wavelength campaign (radio, optical, and X-ray bands) accompanied by the analysis of publicly available GeV Fermi/LAT data. The campaign covered a period of more than 100 days around the 2021 periastron and revealed substantial differences from previously observed passages. We report a major delay of the GeV flare, weaker X-ray flux during the peaks, which are typically attributed to the times when the pulsar crosses the disk, and the appearance of a third X-ray peak never observed before. We argue that these features are consistent with the emission cone model of Chernyakova et al (2020) in the case of a sparser and clumpier disk of the Be star.

Abstract: The KM3NeT research infrastructure is currently under construction at two locations in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA water-Cherenkov neutrino detector off the French coast will instrument several megatons of seawater with photosensors. Its main objective is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. This work aims at demonstrating the general applicability of deep convolutional neural networks to neutrino telescopes, using simulated datasets for the KM3NeT/ORCA detector as an example. To this end, the networks are employed to achieve reconstruction and classification tasks that constitute an alternative to the analysis pipeline presented for KM3NeT/ORCA in the KM3NeT Letter of Intent. They are used to infer event reconstruction estimates for the energy, the direction, and the interaction point of incident neutrinos. The spatial distribution of Cherenkov light generated by charged particles induced in neutrino interactions is classified as shower- or track-like, and the main background processes associated with the detection of atmospheric neutrinos are recognized. Performance comparisons to machine-learning classification and maximum-likelihood reconstruction algorithms previously developed for KM3NeT/ORCA are provided. It is shown that this application of deep convolutional neural networks to simulated datasets for a large-volume neutrino telescope yields competitive reconstruction results and performance improvements with respect to classical approaches.

18. gSeaGen: the KM3NeT GENIE-based code for neutrino telescopes

Abstract: The gSeaGen code is a GENIE-based application developed to efficiently generate high statistics samples of events, induced by neutrino interactions, detectable in a neutrino telescope. The gSeaGen code is able to generate events induced by all neutrino flavours, considering topological differences between track-type and shower-like events. Neutrino interactions are simulated taking into account the density and the composition of the media surrounding the detector. Abstract: The recent milestones in multi-messenger astronomy have opened new ways to study the Unverse. The unprecedented gravitational wave (GW) follow-up campaigns established the power that the combination of different messengers has to identify and study the nature and evolution of astrophysical phenomena. Here we focus on the search for high-energy gamma ray emission as electromagnetic counterpart of compact binary coalescences with the H.E.S.S. Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). In this contribution, the optimized strategies developed specifically for the prompt follow-up of gravitational wave events with H.E.S.S are presented. As illustration, the successful observation campaigns up to this time will be described, including the ones during Observation Run O2 on the binary black hole (BH-BH) merger GW170814 and the binary neutron star (NS-NS) merger GW170817, and an update on recent events occurring during O3. Results of these searches are presented and the constraints that prompt observations can put on very-high-energy, non-thermal emission, are briefly discussed. Finally, an outlook on further improvements for the gravitational waves follow-up program with H.E.S.S. will be provided.

20. Is the SNR HESS J1731-347 colliding with molecular clouds?

Abstract: The supernova remnant (SNR) HESS J1731-347 is a young SNR which displays a non-thermal X-ray and TeV shell structure. A molecular cloud at a distance of 3.2 kpc is spatially coincident with the western part of the SNR, and it is likely hit by the SNR. The X-ray emission from this part of the shell is much lower than from the rest of the SNR. Moreover, a compact GeV emission region coincident with the cloud has been detected with a soft spectrum. These observations seem to imply a shock-cloud collision scenario at this area, where the stalled shock can no longer accelerate super-TeV electrons or maintain strong magnetic turbulence downstream, while the GeV cosmic rays (CRs) are released through this stalled shock. To test this hypothesis, we have performed a detailed Fermi-LAT reanalysis of the HESS J1731-347 region with over 9 years of data. We find that the compact GeV emission region displays a spectral power-law index of -2.4, whereas the GeV emission from the rest of the SNR (excluding the cloud region) has an index of -1.8. A hadronic model involving a shock-cloud collision scenario is built to explain the -ray emission from this area. It consists of three CR sources: run-away super-TeV CRs that have escaped from the fast shock, leaked GeV CRs from the stalled shock, and the local CR sea. The X-ray and -ray emission of the SNR excluding the shock-cloud interaction region is explained in a one-zone leptonic model. Our shock-cloud collision model explains well the GeV-TeV observations from both cloud regions around HESS J1731-347, i.e. from the cloud in contact with the SNR and from the more distant cloud which is coincident with the nearby TeV source HESS J1729-345. We find however that the leaked GeV CRs from the shock-cloud collision do not necessarily dominate the GeV emission from the clouds, due to a comparable contribution from the local CR sea., Comment: 20 pages

21. Evidence for recent GeV brightening of the SN 1987A region

Abstract: We report on a recent (2016-2018) enhancement of the GeV emission from the SN 1987A region as observed with Fermi/LAT. The observed signal is characterised by a power-law spectrum with a slope of 2.1 +/- 0.2 and is detected only at energies >1 GeV. The Fermi/LAT data constrain the position of the signal to within 0.15 degree around SN 1987A. Although a recent increase in the gamma-ray emission from SN 1987A seems to be a natural explanation for the detected emission, given the youth of the source and its rapid evolution, the Fermi/LAT location also overlaps with several other potential gamma-ray sources: 30 Dor C, Honeycomb nebula, RX J0536.9-6913, and a hypothetical, previously unknown transient source. We argue that multiwavelength observations of the region performed during the next few years can clarify the nature of the signal and encourage such observations. We also present upper limits on the time-averaged flux of SN 1987A based on 10 years of Fermi/LAT exposure, which can be used to better constrain the particle acceleration models of this source.

22. Leaked GeV CRs from a broken shell: Explaining 9 years Fermi-LAT data of SNR W28

Abstract: Supernova remnant (SNR)\,W28 is well known for its classic hadronic scenario, in which the TeV cosmic rays (CRs) released at the early stage of this mid-aged SNR are illuminating nearby molecular clouds (MCs). Overwhelming evidences have shown that the northeast of the SNR (W28-North) has already encountered with the MC clumps. Through this broken shell -- W28-North, we believe the CRs with energy down to $<$1\,GeV to be able to be injected into nearby MCs. To further testify this hadronic scenario, we first analyse the 9 years Fermi-LAT data in/around W28 with energy down to 0.3\,GeV. Our Fermi-LAT analysis display a 10-200 GeV skymap which spatially matches well with the known TeV sources -- HESS\,J1801-233 (W28-North), HESS\,J1800-240\,A,\,B\,\&\,C (240\,A\,B\,\&\,C). At low energy band, we has discovered a 0.5-1\,GeV blob located to the south of 240\,B\,\&\,C, and a low flux of 0.3-1\,GeV at 240\,A. A hadronic model is build to explain our analysis results and previous multi-wavelength observations of W28. Our model consists of three CR sources: The run-away CRs escaped from a strong shock; The leaked GeV CRs from the broken shell -- W28-North; And the local CR sea. Through modelling the SNR evolution, CR acceleration\,\&\,releasing, we have explained the GeV-TeV emission in/around SNR\,W28 (except for 240\,A) in one model. Both the damping of the magnetic waves by the neutrals and the decreased acceleration efficiency are taken into account in our model due to the mid-age of SNR W28., Comment: This paper has 25 pages, 9 figures and 5 tables

24. Probing The Local Environment of the Supernova Remnant HESS J1731-347 with CO and CS Observations

Abstract: The shell-type supernova remnant HESS J1731$-$347 emits TeV gamma-rays, and is a key object for the study of the cosmic ray acceleration potential of supernova remnants. We use 0.5-1 arcminute Mopra CO/CS(1-0) data in conjunction with HI data to calculate column densities towards the HESS J1731$-$347 region. We trace gas within at least four Galactic arms, typically tracing total (atomic+molecular) line-of-sight H column densities of 2-3$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Assuming standard X-factor values and that most of the HI/CO emission seen towards HESS J1731$-$347 is on the near-side of the Galaxy, X-ray absorption column densities are consistent with HI+CO-derived column densities foreground to, but not beyond, the Scutum-Crux Galactic arm, suggesting a kinematic distance of $\sim$3.2 kpc for HESS J1731$-$347. At this kinematic distance, we also find dense, infrared-dark gas traced by CS(1-0) emission coincident with the north of HESS J1731$-$347, the nearby HII region G353.43$-$0.37 and the nearby unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1729$-$345. This dense gas lends weight to the idea that HESS J1729$-$345 and HESS J1731-347 are connected, perhaps via escaping cosmic-rays., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

25. The Mirror Alignment and Control System for CT5 of the H.E.S.S. experiment

Abstract: The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) experiment is one of the largest observatories for gamma-ray astronomy. It consists of four telescopes with a reflecting dish diameter of 12m (CT1 to CT4) and a newer large telescope (CT5) with a reflecting dish diameter of 28m. On CT5 876 mirror facets are mounted, all of them equipped with a computerised system for their alignment. The design of the mirror alignment and control system and the performance of the hardware installed to the telescope are presented. Furthermore the achieved point spread function of the telescope over the full operational elevation range as well as the stability of the alignment over an extended period of time are shown.

26. Evidence for a binary origin of a central compact object

Abstract: Central compact objects (CCOs) are thought to be young thermally emitting isolated neutron stars that were born during the preceding core-collapse supernova explosion. Here we present evidence that at least in one case the CCO could have been formed within a binary system. We show that the highly reddened optical source IRAS~17287$-$3443, located $25^{\prime \prime}$ away from the CCO candidate XMMUJ173203.3$-$344518 and classified previously as a post asymptotic giant branch star, is indeed surrounded by a dust shell. This shell is heated by the central star to temperatures of $\sim90$\,K and observed as extended infrared emission in 8-160\,$\mu$m band. The dust temperature also increases in the vicinity of the CCO which implies that it likely resides within the shell. We estimate the total dust mass to be $\sim0.4-1.5\,M_\odot$ which significantly exceeds expected dust yields by normal stars and thus likely condensed from supernova ejecta. Taking into account that both the age of the supernova remnant and the duration of active mass loss phase by the optical star are much shorter than the total lifetime of either object, the supernova and the onset of the active mass loss phase of the companion have likely occurred approximately simultaneously. This is most easily explained if the evolution of both objects is interconnected. 28. XMM-Newton observation of the Galactic supernova remnant W51C (G49.1-0.1)

Abstract: The supernova remnant (SNR) W51C is a Galactic object located in a strongly inhomogeneous interstellar medium with signs of an interaction of the SNR blast wave with dense molecular gas. Diffuse X-ray emission from the interior of the SNR can reveal element abundances in the different emission regions and shed light on the type of supernova (SN) explosion and its progenitor. The hard X-ray emission helps to identify possible candidates for a pulsar formed in the SN explosion and for its pulsar wind nebula (PWN). We have analysed X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton. Spectral analyses in selected regions were performed. Ejecta emission in the bright western part of the SNR, located next to a complex of dense molecular gas, was confirmed. The Ne and Mg abundances suggest a massive progenitor with a mass of > 20 M_sun. Two extended regions emitting hard X-rays were identified (corresponding to the known sources [KLS2002] HX3 west and CXO J192318.5+140305 discovered with ASCA and Chandra, respectively), each of which has an additional point source inside and shows a power-law spectrum with Gamma ~ 1.8. 29. Discovery of the mysterious gamma-ray source HESS J1832-093 in the vicinity of SNR G22.7-0.2

Abstract: Thanks to the use of advanced analysis techniques, the H.E.S.S. imaging Cherenkov telescope array has now reached a sensitivity level allowing the detection of sources with fluxes around 1% of the Crab with a limited observation time (less than ~100 hours). 67 hours of observations in the region of the supernova remnant G22.7-0.2 thus yielded the detection of the faint point-like source HESS J1832-093 in spatial coincidence with a part of the radio shell of the supernova remnant. A multi-wavelength search for counterparts was then performed and led to the elaboration of various scenarii in order to explain the origin of the very high energy excess. The presence of molecular clouds in the line of sight could indicate a hadronic origin through \pi^0 production and decay. However, the discovery of an X-ray point source and its potential infrared counterpart give rise to other possibilities such as a pulsar wind nebula nature or a binary system. Abstract: We report the discovery of an X-ray counterpart of the unidentified very high energy gamma-ray source HESS J1427-608. In the sky field coincident with HESS J1427-608, an extended source was found in the 2-8 keV band, and was designated as Suzaku J1427-6051. Its X-ray radial profile has an extension of sigma=0.9' +/- 0.1' if approximated by a Gaussian. The spectrum was well fitted by an absorbed power-law with N_H=(1.1 +/- 0.3) times 10^23 cm^-2, Gamma=3.1 +0.6/-0.5, and the unabsorbed flux F_X=(9 +4/-2) times 10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 in the 2-10 keV band. Using XMM-Newton archive data, we found seven point sources in the Suzaku source region. However, because their total flux and absorbing column densities are more than an order of magnitude lower than those of Suzaku J1427-6051, we consider that they are unrelated to the Suzaku source. Thus, Suzaku J1427-6051 is considered to be a truly diffuse source and an X-ray counterpart of HESS J1427-608. 31. Suzaku Observations of the Non-thermal Supernova Remnant HESS J1731-347

Abstract: A detailed analysis of the nonthermal X-ray emission from the North-Western and Southern parts of the supernova remnant (SNR) HESS J1731$ - $347 with {\it Suzaku} is presented. The shell portions covered by the observations emit hard and line-less X-rays. The spectrum can be reproduced by a simple absorbed power-law model with a photon index $\Gamma$ of 1.8-2.7 and an absorption column density $N_{\rm H}$ of (1.0-2.1)$\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. These quantities change significantly from region to region; the North-Western part of the SNR has the hardest and most absorbed spectrum. The Western part of the X-ray shell has a smaller curvature than North-Western and Southern shell segments. A comparison of the X-ray morphology to the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray and radio images was performed. The emission region is spatially coincident with molecular clouds visible in 13CO data, suggesting a hadronic origin of the TeV emission, although other scenarios brought by X-ray observations with the XMM-Newton satellite are also discussed. 33. Suzaku observation of the unidentified VHE gamma-ray source HESS J1702-420

Abstract: A deep X-ray observation of the unidentified very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source HESS J1702-420, for the first time, was carried out by Suzaku. No bright sources were detected in the XIS field of view (FOV) except for two faint point-like sources. The two sources, however, are considered not to be related to HESS J1702-420, because their fluxes in the 2-10 keV band (~ 10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2) are ~ 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the VHE gamma-ray flux in the 1-10 TeV band (F_{TeV} = 3.1 x 10^-11 erg s^-1 cm^-2). We compared the energy spectrum of diffuse emission, extracted from the entire XIS FOV with those from nearby observations. If we consider the systematic error of background subtraction, no significant diffuse emission was detected with an upper limit of F_X <2.7 x 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 in the 2-10 keV band for an assumed power-law spectrum of \Gamma=2.1 and a source size same as that in the VHE band. The upper limit of the X-ray flux is twelve times as small as the VHE gamma-ray flux. The large flux ratio (F_{TeV}/F_X) indicates that HESS J1702-420 is another example of a "dark" particle accelerator. If we use a simple one-zone leptonic model, in which VHE gamma-rays are produced through inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background and interstellar far-infrared emission, and the X-rays via the synchrotron mechanism, an upper limit of the magnetic field (1.7 \mu G) is obtained from the flux ratio. Because the magnetic field is weaker than the typical value in the Galactic plane (3-10 \mu G), the simple one-zone model may not work for HESS J1702-420 and a significant fraction of the VHE gamma-rays may originate from protons., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in PASJ (Suzaku and MAXI special issue)

Abstract: The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) consists of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) in Namibia for the detection of cosmic very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the potential VHE gamma-ray sources. VHE gamma-emission from GRBs is predicted by many GRB models. Because of its generally fast-fading nature in many wavebands, the time evolution of any VHE gamma-radiation is still unknown. In order to probe the largely unexplored VHE gamma-ray spectra of GRBs, a GRB observing program has been set up by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. With the high sensitivity of the H.E.S.S. array, VHE gamma-ray flux levels predicted by GRB models are well within reach. 36. X-ray follow-up observations of unidentified VHE gamma-ray sources

Abstract: A large fraction of the recently discovered Galactic Very High Energy (VHE) source population remains unidentified to date. VHE gamma-ray emission traces high energy particles in these sources, but for example in case of hadronic processes also the gas density at the emission site. Moreover, the particles have sufficiently long lifetimes to be able to escape from their acceleration sites. Therefore, the gamma-ray sources or at least the areas of maximum surface brightness are in many cases spatially offset from the actual accelerators. A promising way to identify the objects in which the particles are accelerated seems to be to search for emission signatures of the acceleration process (like emission from shock-heated plasma). Also the particles themselves (through primary or secondary synchrotron emission) can be traced in lower wavebands. Those signatures are best visible in the X-ray band, and current X-ray observatories are well suited to conduct such follow-up observations. Abstract: Suzaku observations of a TeV unidentified (unID) source, HESS J1745-303, are presented. A possible excess of neutral iron line emission is discovered, and is likely associated with the main part of HESS J1745-303, named "region A". It may be an X-ray reflection nebula where the X-rays from previous Galactic Center (GC) activity are reflected by a molecular cloud. This result further strengthens the assumption that the molecular cloud which is spatially coincident with region A of HESS J1745-303 is located in the GC region. The TeV emission from molecular clouds is reminiscent of the diffuse TeV gamma-rays from the GC giant molecular clouds, and it could have the same emission mechanism. With deep exposure mapping observations by Suzaku, a tight upper-limit on the 2-10 keV continuum diffuse emission from region A is obtained, as 2.1x10^-13ergs s^-1cm^-2. The flux ratio between 1-10 TeV and 2-10 keV is larger than 4. Possible scenarios to reproduce wide-band spectra from keV to TeV are examined. Thermal X-rays from nearby two old supernova remnants, G359.0-0.9 and G359.1-0.5, are detected, and their emission properties are well determined in the present study with deep exposure., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, ApJ accepted

38. Simultaneous H.E.S.S. and Chandra observations of Sgr A* during an X-ray flare

Abstract: The rapidly varying non-thermal X-ray emission observed from Sgr A* points to particle acceleration taking place close to the supermassive black hole. The TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1745-290 is coincident with Sgr A* and may be closely related to the X-ray emission. Simultaneous X-ray and TeV observations are required to elucidate the relationship between these two objects. Here we report on joint H.E.S.S./Chandra observations in July 2005, during which an X-ray flare was detected. Despite a factor >10 increase in the X-ray flux of Sgr A*, no evidence is found for an increase in the TeV gamma-ray flux. We find that an increase of the gamma-ray flux of a factor 2 or greater can be excluded at a confidence level of 99%. Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 777 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0777, Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain.
