Quantum information scrambling refers to the spread of the initially stored information over many degrees of freedom of a quantum many-body system. Information scrambling is intimately linked to the thermalization of isolated quantum many-body systems and has been typically studied in a sudden quench scenario. Here we extend the notion of quantum information scrambling to critical quantum many-body systems undergoing an adiabatic evolution. In particular, we analyze how the symmetry-breaking information of an initial state is scrambled in adiabatically-driven integrable systems, such as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick and quantum Rabi model. Following a time-dependent protocol that drives the system from a symmetry-breaking to a normal phase, we show how the initial information is scrambled even for perfect adiabatic evolutions as indicated by the expectation value of a suitable observable. We detail the underlying mechanism for quantum information scrambling, its relation to ground- and excited-state quantum phase transitions and quantify the degree of scrambling in terms of the number of eigenstates that participate in the encoding of the initial symmetry-breaking information. While the energy of the final state remains unaltered in an adiabatic protocol, the relative phases among eigenstates are scrambled and so is the symmetry-breaking information. We show that a potential information retrieval, following a time-reversed protocol, is hindered by small perturbations as indicated by a vanishingly small Loschmidt echo and out-of-time-ordered correlators. In this article, we consider a realistic waveguide implementation of a quantum network that serves as a testbed to show how to maximize the storage and manipulation of quantum information in QED setups. We analyze two approaches using wavepacket engineering and quantum state transfer protocols. First, we propose and design a family of orthogonal photons in the time domain. These photons allow for a selective interaction with distinct targeted qubits. Yet, mode multiplexing employing resonant nodes is largely spoiled by cross-talk effects. This motivates the second approach, namely, frequency multiplexing. Here we explore the limits of frequency multiplexing through the waveguide, analyzing its capabilities to host and faithfully transmit photons of different frequencies within a given bandwidth. We perform detailed one- and two-photon simulations and provide theoretical bounds for the fidelity of coherent quantum state transfer protocols under realistic conditions. Our results show that state-of-the-art experiments can employ dozens of multiplexed photons with global fidelities fulfilling the requirements imposed by fault-tolerant quantum computing. This is with the caveat that the conditions for single-photon fidelity are met.

In this study, we address the challenge of controlling quantum systems under environmental influences using the theory of dynamical invariants. We employ a reverse engineering approach to develop control protocols designed to be robust against environmental noise and dissipation. This technique offers significant improvements over traditional quantum control methods by accounting for the time-dependent dissipation factor in the master equation, which results from modulating the system's Hamiltonian (the control fields). Additionally, our method obviates the need for iterative propagation of the system state, a resource-intensive process. The method can be applied to any open system dynamics that can be described using a time-dependent Master equation. We demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of our approach through applications to two fundamental models: a two-level quantum system and a quantum harmonic oscillator, both interacting with a thermal bath.

We analyze the expressivity of a universal deep neural network that can be organized as a series of nested qubit rotations, accomplished by adjustable data re-uploads. While the maximal expressive power increases with the depth of the network and the number of qubits, it is fundamentally bounded by the data encoding mechanism. Focusing on regression problems, we systematically investigate the expressivity limits for different measurements and architectures. The presence of entanglement, either by entangling layers or global measurements, saturate towards this bound. In these cases, entanglement leads to an enhancement of the approximation capabilities of the network compared to local readouts of the individual qubits in non-entangling networks. We attribute this enhancement to a larger survival set of Fourier harmonics when decomposing the output signal.

We present a protocol to create entangled coherent states by engineering cross-Kerr interactions between bosonic systems endowed with (externally driven) internal spin-like degrees of freedom. With slight modifications, the protocol is also able to produce N00N states through nonlinear beam splitter interactions. Each bosonic system interacts locally with its spin and by suitably tuning the model parameters, various classes of effective bosonic interaction Hamiltonians, mediated by the coupled spins, can be engineered. Quantum many-body systems are emerging as key elements in the quest for quantum-based technologies and in the study of fundamental physics. In this study, we address the challenge of achieving fast and high-fidelity evolutions across quantum phase transitions, a crucial requirement for practical applications. We introduce a control technique based on dynamical invariants tailored to ensure adiabatic-like evolution within the lowest-energy subspace of the many-body systems described by the transverse-field Ising and long-range Kitaev models. By tuning the controllable parameter according to analytical control results, we achieve high-fidelity evolutions operating close to the speed limit. Remarkably, our approach leads to the breakdown of Kibble-Zurek scaling laws, offering tunable and significantly improved time scaling behavior. We provide detailed numerical simulations to illustrate our findings, demonstrating scalability with the system size and robustness against noisy controls and disorder, as well as its applicability to a non-integrable system.

We model and experimentally demonstrate the full time-dependent counting statistics of photons emitted by a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond under non-resonant laser excitation and resonant microwave control. A generalization of the quantum jump formalism for the seven electronic states involved in the fast intrinsic dynamics of an NV center provides a self-contained model that allows for the characterization of its emission and clarifies the relation between the quantum system internal states and the measurable detected photon counts. Entangled quantum many-body systems can be used as sensors that enable the estimation of parameters with a precision larger than that achievable with ensembles of individual quantum detectors. Typically, the parameter estimation strategy requires the microscopic modelling of the quantum many-body system, as well as a an accurate description of its dynamics. This entails a complexity that can hinder the applicability of Bayesian inference techniques. In this work we show how to circumvent these issues by using neural networks that faithfully reproduce the dynamics of quantum many-body sensors, thus allowing for an efficient Bayesian analysis. We exemplify with an XXZ model driven by magnetic fields, and show that our method is capable to yield an estimation of field parameters beyond the standard quantum limit scaling. Quantum state transfer is a key operation for quantum information processing. The original pitch-and-catch protocols rely on flying qubits or single photons with engineered wavepacket shapes to achieve a deterministic, fast and high-fidelity transfer. Yet, these protocols overlook two important factors, namely, the distortion of the wavepacket during the propagation and non-Markovian effects during the emission and reabsorption processes due to time-dependent controls. Here we address both difficulties in a general quantum-optical model and propose a correction strategy to improve quantum state transfer protocols. Including non-Markovian effects in our theoretical description, we show how to derive control pulses that imprint phases on the wavepacket that compensate the distortion caused by propagation. Universal control over a bosonic degree of freedom is key in the quest for quantum-based technologies. Such universal control requires however the ability to perform demanding non-Gaussian gates -- namely, higher-than-quadratic interactions at the level of the bosonic operators. Here we consider a single ancillary two-level system, interacting with the bosonic mode of interest via a driven quantum Rabi model, and show that it is sufficient to induce the deterministic realization of a large class of Gaussian and non-Gaussian gates, which in turn provide universal bosonic control. This scheme reduces the overhead of previous ancilla-based methods where long gate-sequences are required to generate highly populated targets. In fact, our method naturally yields the high-fidelity preparation of multi-squeezed states -- i.e., the high-order generalization of displaced and squeezed states -- which feature large phase-space Wigner negativities. The universal control is further illustrated by generating a cubic-phase gate. Finally, we address the resilience of the method in the presence of realistic noise. The characterization of quantum critical phenomena is pivotal for the understanding and harnessing of quantum many-body physics. However, their complexity makes the inference of such fundamental processes difficult. Thus, efficient and experimentally non-demanding methods for their diagnosis are strongly desired. Here, we introduce a general scheme, based on the combination of finite-size scaling and the linear response of a given observable to a time-dependent perturbation, to efficiently extract the energy gaps to the lowest excited states of the system, and thus infer its dynamical critical exponents. Remarkably, the scheme is able to tackle both integrable and non-integrable models, prepared away from their ground states. Quantum metrology shows that by exploiting nonclassical resources it is possible to overcome the fundamental limit of precision found for classical parameter-estimation protocols. The scaling of the quantum Fisher information -- which provides an upper bound to the achievable precision -- with respect to the protocol duration is then of primarily importance to assess its performances. In classical protocols the quantum Fisher information scales linearly with time, while typical quantum-enhanced strategies achieve a quadratic (Heisenberg) or even higher-order polynomial scalings. Here we report a protocol that is capable of surpassing the polynomial scaling, and yields an exponential advantage. Such exponential advantage is achieved by approaching, but without crossing, the critical point of a quantum phase transition of a fully-connected model in the thermodynamic limit. The exponential advantage stems from the breakdown of the adiabatic condition close to a critical point. As we demonstrate, this exponential scaling is well captured by the new bound derived in arXiv:2110.04144, which in turn allows us to obtain approximate analytical expressions for the quantum Fisher information that agree with exact numerical simulations. In addition, we discuss the limitations to the exponential scaling when considering a finite-size system as well as its robustness against decoherence effects. Phase transitions represent a compelling tool for classical and quantum sensing applications. It has been demonstrated that quantum sensors can in principle saturate the Heisenberg scaling, the ultimate precision bound allowed by quantum mechanics, in the limit of large probe number and long measurement time. Due to the critical slowing down, the protocol duration time is of utmost relevance in critical quantum metrology. However, how the long-time limit is reached remains in general an open question. So far, only two dichotomic approaches have been considered, based on either static or dynamical properties of critical quantum systems. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the scaling of the quantum Fisher information for different families of protocols that create a continuous connection between static and dynamical approaches. In particular, we consider fully-connected models, a broad class of quantum critical systems of high experimental relevance. Our analysis unveils the existence of universal precision-scaling regimes. These regimes remain valid even for finite-time protocols and finite-size systems. We propose a realistic setup, inspired by already existing experiments, within which we develop a general formalism for the implementation of distributed quantum gates. Mediated by a quantum link that establishes a bidirectional quantum channel between distant nodes, our proposal works both for inter- and intra node communication and handles scenarios ranging from the few to the many modes limit of the quantum link. We are able to design fast and reliable state transfer protocols in every regime of operation, which, together with a detailed description of the scattering process, allows us to engineer two sets of deterministic universal distributed quantum gates. Gates whose implementation in quantum networks does not need entanglement distribution nor measurements. By employing a realistic description of the physical setup we identify the most relevant imperfections in the quantum links as well as optimal points of operation with resulting infidelities of $1-F \approx 10^{-2}-10^{-3}$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We consider a finite one-dimensional chain of quantum rotors interacting with a set of thermal baths at different temperatures. When the interaction between the rotors is made chiral, such a system behaves as an autonomous thermal motor, converting heat currents into non-vanishing rotational ones. Such a dynamical response is strongly pronounced in the range of the Hamiltonian parameters for which the ground state of the system in the thermodynamic limit exhibits a quantum phase transition. Such working points are associated with large quantum coherence and multipartite quantum correlations within the state of the system. Crossing a quantum critical point in finite time challenges the adiabatic condition due to the closing of the energy gap, which ultimately results in the formation of excitations. Such non-adiabatic excitations are typically deemed detrimental in many scenarios, and consequently several strategies have been put forward to circumvent their formation. Here, however, we show how these non-adiabatic excitations -- originated from the failure to meet the adiabatic condition due to the presence of a quantum critical point -- can be controlled and thus harnessed to perform certain tasks advantageously. We focus on closed cycles reaching the quantum critical point of fully-connected models analyzing two examples. First, a quantum battery that is loaded by approaching a quantum critical point, whose stored and extractable work increases exponentially via repeating cycles. Second, a scheme for the fast preparation of spin squeezed states containing multipartite entanglement that offer a metrological advantage. The corresponding figure of merit in both cases crucially depends on universal critical exponents and the scaling of the protocol driving the system in the vicinity of the transition. We examine how the presence of an excited state quantum phase transition manifests in the dynamics of a many-body system subject to a sudden quench. Focusing on the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model initialized in the ground state of the ferromagnetic phase, we demonstrate that the work probability distribution displays non-Gaussian behavior for quenches in the vicinity of the excited state critical point. Furthermore, we show that the entropy of the diagonal ensemble is highly susceptible to critical regions, making it a robust and practical indicator of the associated spectral characteristics. We assess the role that symmetry breaking has on the ensuing dynamics, highlighting that its effect is only present for quenches beyond the critical point. Artificial neural networks bridge input data into output results by approximately encoding the function that relates them. This is achieved after training the network with a collection of known inputs and results leading to an adjustment of the neuron connections and biases. In the context of quantum detection schemes, neural networks find a natural playground. In particular, in the presence of a target, a quantum sensor delivers a response, i.e., the input data, which can be subsequently processed by a neural network that outputs the target features. We demonstrate that adequately trained neural networks enable to characterize a target with minimal knowledge of the underlying physical model, in regimes where the quantum sensor presents complex responses, and under a significant shot noise due to a reduced number of measurements. We exemplify the method with a development for $^{171}$Yb$^{+}$ atomic sensors. Phase transitions have recently been formulated in the time domain of quantum many-body systems, a phenomenon dubbed dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), whose phenomenology is often divided in two types. One refers to distinct phases according to long-time averaged order parameters, while the other is focused on the non-analytical behavior emerging in the rate function of the Loschmidt echo. Here we show that such DQPTs can be found in systems with few degrees of freedom, i.e. they can take place without resorting to the traditional thermodynamic limit. We illustrate this by showing the existence of the two types of DQPTs in a quantum Rabi model -- a system involving a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and a bosonic mode. The dynamical criticality appears in the limit of an infinitely large ratio of the spin frequency with respect to the bosonic one. We determine its dynamical phase diagram and study the long-time averaged order parameters, whose semiclassical approximation yields a jump at the transition point. We find the critical times at which the rate function becomes non-analytical, showing its associated critical exponent as well as the corrections introduced by a finite frequency ratio. The fast and faithful preparation of the ground state of quantum systems is a challenging task but crucial for several applications in the realm of quantum-based technologies. Decoherence poses a limit to the maximum time-window allowed to an experiment to faithfully achieve such desired states. This is of particular significance in critical systems, where the vanishing energy gap challenges an adiabatic ground state preparation. We show that a bang-bang protocol, consisting of a time evolution under two different values of an externally tunable parameter, allows for a high-fidelity ground state preparation in evolution times no longer than those required by the application of standard optimal control techniques, such as the chopped-random basis quantum optimization. In addition, owing to their reduced number of variables, such bang-bang protocols are very well suited to optimization purposes, reducing the increasing computational cost of other optimal control protocols. We benchmark the performance of such approach through two paradigmatic models, namely the Landau-Zener and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Geometric quantum speed limits quantify the trade-off between the rate with which quantum states can change and the resources that are expended during the evolution. Counterdiabatic driving is a unique tool from shortcuts to adiabaticity to speed up quantum dynamics while completely suppressing nonequilibrium excitations. We show that the quantum speed limit for counterdiabatically driven systems undergoing quantum phase transitions fully encodes the Kibble-Zurek mechanism by correctly predicting the transition from adiabatic to impulse regimes. We propose two measurement-based schemes to cool a nonlinear mechanical resonator down to energies close to that of its ground state. The protocols rely on projective measurements of a spin degree of freedom, which interacts with the resonator through a Jaynes-Cummings interaction. We show the performance of these cooling schemes, that can be either concatenated -- i.e. built by repeating a sequence of dynamical evolutions followed by projective measurements -- or single-shot. We characterize the performance of both cooling schemes with numerical simulations, and pinpoint the effects of decoherence and noise mechanisms. We present a fast and robust framework to prepare non-classical states of a bosonic mode exploiting a coherent exchange of excitations with a two-level system ruled by a Jaynes-Cummings interaction mechanism. Our protocol, which is built on shortcuts to adiabaticity, allows for the generation of arbitrary Fock states of the bosonic mode, as well as coherent quantum superpositions of a Schr\"odinger cat-like form. In addition, we show how to obtain a class of photon-shifted states where the vacuum population is removed, a result akin to photon addition, but displaying more non-classicality than standard photon-added states. We investigate the quench dynamics of an open quantum system involving a quantum phase transition. In the isolated case, the quench dynamics involving the phase transition exhibits a number of scaling relations with the quench rate as predicted by the celebrated Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In contact with an environment however, these scaling laws breakdown and one may observe an anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior: slower ramps lead to less adiabatic dynamics, increasing thus non-adiabatic effects with the quench time. In contrast to previous works, we show here that such anti-Kibble-Zurek scaling can acquire a universal form in the sense that it is determined by the equilibrium critical exponents of the phase transition, provided the excited states of the system exhibit singular behavior, as observed in fully-connected models. This demonstrates novel universal scaling laws granted by a system-environment interaction in a critical system. We illustrate these findings in two fully-connected models, namely, the quantum Rabi and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models. We quantitatively assess the energetic cost of several well-known control protocols that achieve a finite time adiabatic dynamics, namely counterdiabatic and local counterdiabatic driving, optimal control, and inverse engineering. By employing a cost measure based on the norm of the total driving Hamiltonian, we show that a hierarchy of costs emerges that is dependent on the protocol duration. As case studies we explore the Landau-Zener model, the quantum harmonic oscillator, and the Jaynes-Cummings model and establish that qualitatively similar results hold in all cases. For the analytically tractable Landau-Zener case, we further relate the effectiveness of a control protocol with the spectral features of the new driving Hamiltonians and show that in the case of counterdiabatic driving, it is possible to further minimize the cost by optimizing the ramp., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We analyze the quantum phase transitions taking place in a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with long-range couplings that decay algebraically with distance. We are interested in the Kibble-Zurek universal scaling laws emerging in non-equilibrium dynamics and in the potential for the unambiguous observation of such behavior in a realistic experimental setup based on trapped ions. To this end, we determine the phase diagram of the model and the critical exponents characterizing its quantum phase transitions by means of density-matrix renormalization group calculations and finite-size scaling theory, which allows us to obtain good estimates for different range of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. Beyond critical equilibrium properties, we tackle a non-equilibrium scenario in which quantum Kibble-Zurek scaling laws may be retrieved. Here it is found that the predicted non-equilibrium universal behavior, i.e. the scaling laws as a function of the quench rate and critical exponents, can be observed in systems comprising an experimentally feasible number of spins. Finally, a scheme is introduced to simulate the algebraically decaying couplings accurately by means of a digital quantum simulation with trapped ions. We present a framework for the realization of dissipative evolutions of spin-boson models, including multiphoton exchange dynamics, as well as nonlinear transition rates. Our approach is based on the implementation of a generalized version of a dissipative linear quantum Rabi model. The latter comprises a linearly coupled spin-boson term, spin rotations, and standard dissipators. We provide numerical simulations of illustrative cases supporting the good performance of our method. We establish an approximate equivalence between a generalised quantum Rabi model and its nth order counterparts where spin-boson interactions are nonlinear as they comprise a simultaneous exchange of $n$ bosonic excitations. Although there exists no unitary transformation between these models, we demonstrate their equivalence to a good approximation in a wide range of parameters. This shows that nonlinear spin-boson couplings, i.e. nth order quantum Rabi models, are accessible to quantum systems with only linear coupling between boson and spin modes by simply adding spin rotations and after an appropriate transformation. The dynamics of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime is theoretically analyzed in a trapped-ion setup. Recognizably, the main hallmark of this regime is the emergence of collapses and revivals, whose faithful observation is hindered under realistic magnetic dephasing noise. Here we discuss how to attain a faithful implementation of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime which is robust against magnetic field fluctuations and at the same time provides a large tunability of the simulated parameters. This is achieved by combining standing wave laser configuration with continuous dynamical decoupling. In addition, we study the role that amplitude fluctuations play to correctly attain the quantum Rabi model using the proposed method. We propose a robust realization of the two-photon quantum Rabi model in a trapped-ion setting based on a continuous dynamical decoupling scheme. In this manner the magnetic dephasing noise, which is identified as the main obstacle to achieve long time coherent dynamics in ion-trap simulators, can be safely eliminated. More specifically, we investigate the ultrastrong coupling regime of the two-photon quantum Rabi model whose realization in trapped ions involves second-order sideband processes. Hence, the resulting dynamics becomes unavoidably slow and more exposed to magnetic noise requiring an appropriate scheme for its elimination. We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of second-order phase transitions in a simplified Ginzburg-Landau model using the Fokker-Planck formalism. In particular, we focus on deriving the Kibble-Zurek scaling laws that dictate the dependence of spatial correlations on the quench rate. In the limiting cases of overdamped and underdamped dynamics, the Fokker-Planck method confirms the theoretical predictions of the Kibble-Zurek scaling theory. The developed framework is computationally efficient, enables the prediction of finite-size scaling functions and is applicable to microscopic models as well as their hydrodynamic approximations. We show that the technique known as concatenated continuous dynamical decoupling (CCD) can be applied to a trapped-ion setup for a robust implementation of the quantum Rabi model in a variety of parameter regimes. These include the case where the Dirac equation emerges, and the limit in which a quantum phase transition takes place. We discuss the applicability of the CCD scheme in terms of the fidelity between different initial states evolving under an ideal quantum Rabi model and their corresponding trapped-ion realization, and demonstrate the effectiveness of noise suppression of our method., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate that the quantum phase transition (QPT) of the Rabi model and critical dynamics near the QPT can be probed in the setup of a single trapped ion. We first show that there exists equilibrium and non-equilibrium universal functions of the Rabi model by finding a proper rescaling of the system parameters and observables. We then propose a scheme that can faithfully realize the Rabi model in the limit of a large ratio of the effective atomic transition frequency to the oscillator frequency using a single trapped-ion and therefore the QPT. It is demonstrated that the predicted universal functions can indeed be observed based on our scheme. The Rabi model, a two-level atom coupled to a harmonic oscillator, can undergo a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT) [M. -J. Hwang et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180404 (2015)]. Here we show that the Rabi QPT accompanies critical behavior in the higher energy excited states, i.e., the excited-state QPT (ESQPT). We derive analytic expressions for the semiclassical density of states, which shows a logarithmic divergence at a critical energy eigenvalue in the broken symmetry (superradiant) phase. Moreover, we find that the logarithmic singularities in the density of states leads to singularities in the relevant observables in the system such as photon number and atomic polarization. We corroborate our analytical semiclassical prediction of the ESQPT in the Rabi model with its numerically exact quantum mechanical solution., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We consider the Rabi Hamiltonian which exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT) despite consisting only of a single-mode cavity field and a two-level atom. We prove QPT by deriving an exact solution in the limit where the atomic transition frequency in unit of the cavity frequency tends to infinity. The effect of a finite transition frequency is studied by analytically calculating finite-frequency scaling exponents as well as performing a numerically exact diagonalization. Going beyond this equilibrium QPT setting, we prove that the dynamics under slow quenches in the vicinity of the critical point is universal, that is, the dynamics is completely characterized by critical exponents. Our analysis demonstrates that the Kibble-Zurek mechanism can precisely predict the universal scaling of residual energy for a model without spatial degrees of freedom. For a certain class of isolated quantum systems, we report the existence of irreversible processes in which the energy is not dissipated. After a closed cycle in which the initial energy distribution is fully recovered, the expectation value of a symmetry-breaking observable changes from a value different from zero in the initial state, to zero in the final state. This entails the unavoidable loss of a certain amount of information, and constitutes a source of irreversibility. We show that the von Neumann entropy of time-averaged equilibrium states increases in the same magnitude as a consequence of the process. We report a kind of quantum phase transition which takes place in isolated quantum systems with non-thermal equilibrium states and an extra symmetry that commutes with the Hamiltonian for any values of the system parameters. A critical energy separates two different phases, one in which the symmetry is broken. This critical behavior is ruled out as soon as the system is put in contact with a thermal bath. The critical point is crossed when a sufficent amount of work is performed on the system, keeping it isolated from the environment. Different phases are identified by means of an order parameter, which is only different from zero in the symmetry-breaking phase. The behavior of the system near the critical point is determined by a set of critical exponents. We illustrate this phenomenon by means of numerical calculations in three different two-level systems.

We study the phase diagram of the Dicke model in terms of the excitation energy and the radiation-matter coupling constant $\lambda$. Below a certain critical value $\lambda_c$ of the coupling constant $\lambda$ all the energy levels have a well-defined parity. For $\lambda > \lambda_c$ the energy spectrum exhibits two different phases separated by a critical energy $E_c$ that proves to be independent of $\lambda$. In the upper phase, the energy levels have also a well defined parity, but below $E_c$ the energy levels are doubly degenerated. We show that the long-time behavior of appropriate parity-breaking observables distinguishes between the different phases of the energy spectrum of the Dicke model. Steady states reached from symmetry-breaking initial conditions restore the symmetry only if their expected energies are above the critical. This fact makes it possible to experimentally explore the complete phase diagram of the excitation spectrum of the Dicke model., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, PRL format
