Introduction and Objectives: Our goals were to study prostatic volume as a limiting factor after HoLEP surgery with short-circuit outpatient care (4 h) and to define other factors that affect the success of the proposed circuit., Materials and Methods: An observational analysis and review was performed using a prospective database. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables were included for patients who were scheduled for short-circuit outpatient care (SCOC) and who underwent HoLEP between 2020 and 2023. We defined SCOC as a postoperative hospital stay of 4 h. Subjects who required more than 4 h in hospital were categorized as conventional hospital admission (CHA). A descriptive populational study was conducted, expressing the mean using a 95% confidence interval and percentages for the continuous variables. In order to analyze them, we used the Student's t-test for the continuous variables and the chi-squared test for the categorical variables., Results: Sixty-eight patients were included, 54 of which completed SCOC, which represented a success ratio of 79.5%. The mean age and prostatic volume of the whole cohort were 68.9 (±6.8) years and 79.5 (±29.1) mL, respectively. We found no significant differences in age, prostatic volume, antiplatelet drug use, indwelling bladder catheter, or applied energy among the subjects who completed SCOC and those who required CHA. No patient was presented with a complication of Grade 3 (or higher) in the modified Clavien-Dindo classification. Although most follicular-derived thyroid cancers are well differentiated and have an overall excellent prognosis following treatment with surgery and radioiodine, management of advanced thyroid cancers, including iodine refractory disease and poorly differentiated/undifferentiated subtypes, is more challenging. Over the past decade, better understanding of the genetic drivers and immune milieu of advanced thyroid cancers has led to significant progress in the management of these patients. Numerous targeted kinase inhibitors are now approved by the U.S Food and Drug administration (FDA) for the treatment of advanced, radioiodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC) as well as anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). Immunotherapy has also been thoroughly studied and has shown promise in selected cases. In this work, we extracted chitosan from marine amphipods associated with aquaculture facilities and tested its use in crop protection. The obtained chitosan was 2.5 ± 0.3% of initial ground amphipod dry weight. The chemical nature of chitosan from amphipod extracts was confirmed via Raman scattering spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This chitosan showed an 85.7-84.3% deacetylation degree. Chitosan from biofouling amphipods at 1 mg·mL -1 virtually arrested conidia germination (ca. sixfold reduction from controls) of the banana wilt pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp cubense Tropical Race 4 (FocTR4). This concentration reduced (ca. twofold) the conidia germination of the biocontrol fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia (Pc123). Chitosan from amphipods at low concentrations (0.01 mg·mL -1 ) still reduced FocTR4 germination but did not affect Pc123. This is the first time that chitosan is obtained from biofouling amphipods. This new chitosan valorizes aquaculture residues and has potential for biomanaging the diseases of food security crops such as bananas.

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years 1,2 . Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period 3 . Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe 4 , but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants., (© 2023. The generation of hydrogen (H 2 ) using sunlight has become an essential energy alternative for decarbonization. The need for functional nanohybrid materials based on photo- and electroactive materials and accessible raw materials is high in the field of solar fuels. To reach this goal, single-step synthesis of {Ta 6 Br i 12 }@GO (GO = graphene oxide) nanohybrids was developed by immobilization of [{Ta 6 Br i 12 }Br a 2 (H 2 O) a 4 ]·4H 2 O (i = inner and a = apical positions of the Ta 6 octahedron) on GO nanosheets by taking the advantage of the easy ligand exchange of the apical cluster ligands with the oxygen functionalities of GO. The nanohybrids were characterized by spectroscopic, analytical, and morphological techniques. The hybrid formation enhances the yield of photocatalytic H 2 from water with respect to their precursors and this is without the presence of precious metals. This enhancement is attributed to the optimal cluster loading onto the GO support and the crucial role of GO in the electron transfer from Ta 6 clusters into GO sheets, thus suppressing the charge recombination. In view of the simplicity and versatility of the designed photocatalytic system, octahedral tantalum clusters are promising candidates to develop new and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for H 2 evolution.

Non-noble bimetallic CoW nanoparticles (NPs) partially embedded in a carbon matrix (CoW@C) have been prepared by a facile hydrothermal carbon-coating methodology followed by pyrolysis under an inert atmosphere. The bimetallic NPs, constituted by a multishell core-shell structure with a metallic Co core, a W-enriched shell involving Co 7 W 6 alloyed structures, and small WO 3 patches partially covering the surface of these NPs, have been established as excellent catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of quinolines to their corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines under mild conditions of pressure and temperature. Successive generations of hunter-gatherers of the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in Iberia had to contend with rapidly changing environments and climatic conditions. This constrained their economic resources and capacity for demographic growth. The Atlantic façade of Iberia was occupied throughout these times and witnessed very significant environmental transformations. Archaeology offers a perspective on how past human population ecologies changed in response to this scenario. Archaeological radiocarbon data are used here to reconstruct demographics of the region over the long term. We introduce various quantitative methods that allow us to develop palaeodemographic and spatio-temporal models of population growth and density, and compare our results to independent records of palaeoenvironmental and palaeodietary change, and growth rates derived from skeletal data. Our results demonstrate that late glacial population growth was stifled by the Younger Dryas stadial, but populations grew in size and density during the Early to Middle Holocene transition. This growth was fuelled in part by an increased dependence on marine and estuarine food sources, demonstrating how the environment was linked to demographic change via the resource base, and ultimately the carrying capacity of the environment. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-graphene oxide (GO) membranes were obtained by employing triethyl phosphate (TEP) as a solvent. GO nanosheets were prepared and characterized in terms of scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), chemical analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP). Two different phase inversion techniques, Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS) and Vapour-Induced Phase Separation (VIPS)/NIPS, were applied to study the effect of fabrication procedure on the membrane structure and properties. Membranes were characterized by SEM, AFM, pore size, porosity, contact angle and mechanical tests, and finally tested for photocatalytic methylene blue (MB + ) degradation under visible light irradiation. The effect of different pH values of dye aqueous solutions on the photocatalytic efficiency was investigated. Finally, the influence of NaCl salt on the MB+ photodegradation process was also evaluated.

Catalytic properties of the cluster compound (TBA) 2 [Mo 6 I i 8 (O 2 CCH 3 ) a 6 ] (TBA = tetrabutylammonium) and a new hybrid material (TBA) 2 Mo 6 I i 8 @GO (GO = graphene oxide) in water photoreduction into molecular hydrogen were investigated. New hybrid material (TBA) 2 Mo 6 I i 8 @GO was prepared by coordinative immobilization of the (TBA) 2 [Mo 6 I i 8 (O 2 CCH 3 ) a 6 ] onto GO sheets and characterized by spectroscopic, analytical, and morphological techniques. Liquid and, for the first time, gas phase conditions were chosen for catalytic experiments under UV-Vis irradiation. In liquid water, optimal H 2 production yields were obtained after using (TBA) 2 [Mo 6 I i 8 (O 2 CCH 3 ) a 6 ] and (TBA) 2 Mo 6 I i 8 @GO) catalysts after 5 h of irradiation of liquid water. Despite these remarkable catalytic performances, "liquid-phase" catalytic systems have serious drawbacks: the cluster anion evolves to less active cluster species with partial hydrolytic decomposition, and the nanocomposite completely decays in the process. Vapor water photoreduction showed lower catalytic performance but offers more advantages in terms of cluster stability, even after longer radiation exposure times and recyclability of both catalysts. The turnover frequency (TOF) of (TBA) 2 Mo 6 I i 8 @GO is three times higher than that of the microcrystalline (TBA) 2 [Mo 6 I i 8 (O 2 CCH 3 ) a 6 ], in agreement with the better accessibility of catalytic cluster sites for water molecules in the gas phase. This bodes well for the possibility of creating {Mo 6 I 8 } 4+ -based materials as catalysts in hydrogen production technology from water vapor.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a prominent member of emerging waterborne pathogens. The environmental reservoirs of multi-resistant phenotypes and other virulence factors in this bacterium are poorly understood. Our study aimed to determine the virulence properties of P. aeruginosa isolated from Roraima Sur Cave (RSC) waters at Guayana Highlands. Based on the best identification at species level by biochemical tests, 16S rRNA sequencing and phylogenetic inferences, one RSC isolate named LG11 was characterized for virulence properties in comparison with P. aeruginosa reference strains. PCR amplification of alginate, elastase, exoenzyme S, exotoxin A, neuraminidase and Quorum-Sensing genes showed a high virulence potential in LG11. This isolate demonstrated multi-resistance to ceftriaxone, tigecycline and imipenem. Pyocyanin production was greater in LG11 (0·478 µg ml -1 ) than the strain ATCC 10145 (0·316 µg ml -1 ), but the highest pigment concentration (2·140 µg ml -1 ) was displayed by the clinical strain CVCM 937 (P = 0·000175). Pronounced biomass production on granite and glass (P < 0·05) and well-developed biofilms indicated the ability of P. aeruginosa from RSC to colonize surfaces found in human and healthcare environments. These data suggest that waters from pristine ecosystems such as RSC could be reservoirs of this opportunistic bacterium carrying important virulence properties with potential epidemiological implications. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study shows for the first time the occurrence of virulence genes and multi-resistance to antimicrobials in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from cave waters at Guayana Highlands. These findings, together with the biofilm formation on surfaces found in human and healthcare settings, suggest public health risks and the potential of these virulence properties to be transferred from or to native populations in waters. Previous literature has analysed the effects of establishment regressors on different measures of restaurant financial performance [1,2]. However, as [3] stated, these studies have focused on the analysis at establishment level rather than at corporate level. Determining the factors that explain the restaurant profitability is not only an important phenomenon for establishments but also for companies because they adapt their products, services and strategies to obtain additional benefits and cash flow [1]. Additionally, progressive globalization has forced companies to operate in countries with environments that differ from the companies' country of origin [4]. In this context, the dataset presented in this paper sought to contribute to the existing literature in two ways. First, it allows us to investigate the factors that determine the profitability of restaurant corporations using advanced measures of financial performance. Second, a multilevel experimental design may be helpful when understanding country heterogeneity in companies´ profitability. The dataset contains a sample of 860 restaurant corporations operating in 18 European countries. From each corporation in the sample 6 financial variables were collected, and from each country, 10 context variables associated with economic conditions and tourism environment were considered. Demographic change lies at the core of debates on genetic inheritance and resilience to climate change of prehistoric hunter-gatherers. Here we analyze the radiocarbon record of Iberia to reconstruct long-term changes in population levels and test different models of demographic growth during the Last Glacial-Interglacial transition. Our best fitting demographic model is composed of three phases. First, we document a regime of exponential population increase during the Late Glacial warming period (c.16.6-12.9 kya). Second, we identify a phase of sustained population contraction and stagnation, beginning with the cold episode of the Younger Dryas and continuing through the first half of the Early Holocene (12.9-10.2 kya). Finally, we report a third phase of density-dependent logistic growth (10.2-8 kya), with rapid population increase followed by stabilization. Our results support a population bottleneck hypothesis during the Last Glacial-Interglacial transition, providing a demographic context to interpret major shifts of prehistoric genetic groups in south-west Europe.

Modification of GO by organic molecules changes its catalytic activity in the hydrogen transfer from i-propanol to enones, affecting the selectivity to allyl alcohol and diastereoselectivity to the resulting stereoisomers. It is noteworthy the system does not contain metals and is recyclable.

The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions is explored for the {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) cluster core based unit starting from (TBA)2 [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 6 ] (TBA=tetra-n-butylammonium; "i" and "a" refer to the face-capping inner and terminal apical ligand, respectively). The catalytic activity of {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) is enhanced by the in situ generation of [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 5 (OH)(a) ](2-) , [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 3 (OH)(a) 3 ](2-) , and [Mo6 Br(i) 8 (OH)(a) 6 ](2-) , which are identified by ESIMS, luminescence, and NMR techniques. Full substitution of F(-) by OH(-) leads to the formation of (H3 O)2 [Mo6 Br(i) 8 (OH)(a) 6 ]⋅10 H2 O; its structure was determined by single-crystal XRD. The immobilization of the active {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) onto graphene oxide (GO) surfaces enhances its stability under catalytic conditions. The catalytic activity of the resulting (TBA)2 Mo6 Br(i) 8 @GO material is improved with respect to GO, but is reduced compared to the activity under homogeneous conditions because of changes in the GO semiconducting properties as well as lower activity and/or accessibility of the anchored cluster., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Graphene oxide catalyzes oxidation by NaClO of primary benzyl and aliphatic amines to a product distribution comprising nitriles and imines. Nitriles are the sole product for long chain aliphatic amines. Spectroscopic characterization suggests that percarboxylic and perlactone groups could be the active sites of the process.

Transition-metal-containing hydrotalcites (HTc) and V(acac)3 /Cu(NO3 )2 ⋅3 H2 O (acac=acetylacetonate) mixtures were tested for their catalytic activity in the cleavage of the lignin model compound erythro-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-l,3-propanediol (1) with molecular oxygen as oxidant. Both catalytic systems displayed high activity and good selectivity and afforded veratric acid as the main product. The catalyst behavior was studied by EPR spectroscopy, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. After the catalysts were established for the model system, lignin depolymerization studies were performed with various organsolv and kraft lignin sources. The oxidative depolymerization and lignin bond cleavage were monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), MALDI MS, and 2D-NMR (HSQC). Irrespective of the lignin pretreatment, both HTc-Cu-V and V(acac)3 /Cu(NO3 )2 ⋅3 H2 O were able to cleave the β-O-4 linkages and the resinol structures to form dimeric and trimeric products., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Layered magadiite and zeolites Y containing framework Co or small CoO clusters in the pores have been synthesized and tested as photocatalysts for water splitting, in the absence and presence of methanol, upon UV or simulated sunlight irradiation; the best performing material was Co-magadiite.

Cluster headache is a severe, debilitating disorder with pain that ranks among the most severe known to humans. Patients with cluster headaches have few therapeutic options and further, 10-20% develop drug-resistant attacks. The often brief duration of cluster attacks makes abortive therapy a challenge, and preventive medications are almost always provided to patients, but the side effects of these preventive medications can be significant. The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) is believed to play a role in headache pain and cranial autonomic symptoms associated with cluster headache, which is a result of activation of the trigeminal-autonomic reflex. For over 100 years, the SPG has been a clinical target to treat primary headache disorders using pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic methods. Radiofrequency lesioning and nerve-resection therapies, while initially beneficial, are irreversible procedures, and the use of neurostimulation provides one method of interfacing with the neural pathways without causing permanent damage to neural tissue. SPG neurostimulation is both reversible and adjustable, and has recently been tested in both proof-of-concept work and in a randomized, sham-controlled trial for the treatment of cluster headache. A randomized, sham-controlled study of 32 patients was performed to evaluate further the use of SPG stimulation for the acute treatment of chronic cluster headache. Of the 32 patients, 28 completed the randomized experimental period. Overall, 68% of patients experienced an acute response, a frequency response, or both. In this study the majority of adverse events were related to the implantation procedure, which typically resolved or remained mild in nature at 3 months following the implant procedure. This and other studies highlight the promise of using SPG stimulation to treat the pain-associated cluster headache. SPG stimulation could be a safe and effective option for chronic cluster headache.
