A reasonable material hardening model (MHM) should be determined for the accurate prediction of welding residual stresses (WRS) in numerical simulation. The present study methodically investigated the impact of material laws on the simulated residual stresses in ultra-high strength steel S960 weldments. Furthermore, mechanical tensile tests were performed to obtain the stress-strain curves and welding experiments were carried out to determine thermomechanical results for validation. The numerical and experimental results express that the amount of strain hardening for ultra-high strength steel S960 is very low at room temperature (RT) and high temperatures, while that is non-ignorable at medium temperatures such as from 200 to 500 °C here. The applied material plasticity model has almost no influence on the computed longitudinal residual stress in numerical simulation of S960 steel. Nevertheless, the predicted magnitude of transverse residual stress could be slightly affected by the employed MHM. For ultra-high strength steel S960, the perfect-plastic (non-hardening) model can accurately predict WRS, which is recommended to use in numerical simulation.

Lamb waves occur in thin-walled structures in two wave modes, the symmetric and antisymmetric mode. Their oscillation on the structures‘ surfaces is either in phase (symmetric) or shifted by a phase angle of π (antisymmetric). In this work, a method is developed to compare the surfaces‘ oscillation phase relation. It is based on the evaluation of time signals regarding the instantaneous phase angle using the continuous wavelet transformation and as a comparative method the short-time Fourier transformation. For this purpose, numerical simulations utilizing the finite element method provide time signals from the top and bottom surface of different thin-walled structures. They differ with respect to their material settings and laminate configurations. The numerically obtained time signals are evaluated by the developed methods. The occurring oscillation phase differences on the top and bottom surface are studied and both methods are compared. Subsequently, the oscillation phase is evaluated experimentally for the wave propagation in a fiber metal laminate. It is shown that the method based on the continuous wavelet transformation is suitable for the evaluation of oscillation phase relations in time signals. Additionally, it is proven that fiber metal laminates show only two phase relations which indicates the occurrence of Lamb waves.

Molecular interaction networks lay the foundation for studying how biological functions are controlled by the complex interplay of genes and proteins. Investigating perturbed processes using biological networks has been instrumental in uncovering mechanisms that underlie complex disease phenotypes. Rapid advances in omics technologies have prompted the generation of high-throughput datasets, enabling large-scale, network-based analyses. Consequently, various modeling techniques, including network enrichment, differential network extraction, and network inference, have proven to be useful for gaining new mechanistic insights. We provide an overview of recent network-based methods and their core ideas to facilitate the discovery of disease modules or candidate mechanisms. Knowledge generated from these computational efforts will benefit biomedical research, especially drug development and precision medicine. We further discuss current challenges and provide perspectives in the field, highlighting the need for more integrative and dynamic network approaches to model disease development and progression.

Channel and spatial attention mechanisms have proven to provide an evident performance boost of deep convolution neural networks. Most existing methods focus on one or run them parallel (series), neglecting the collaboration between the two attentions. In order to better establish the feature interaction between the two types of attentions, a plug-and-play attention module is proposed, which is termed as ‘CAT’—activating the Collaboration between spatial and channel Attentions based on learned Traits. Specifically, traits are represented as trainable coefficients (i.e. colla-factors) to adaptively combine contributions of different attention modules to fit different image hierarchies and tasks better. Moreover, the global entropy pooling is proposed apart from global average pooling and global maximum pooling (GMP) operators, which is an effective component in suppressing noise signals by measuring the information disorder of feature maps. A three-way pooling operation is introduced into attention modules and the adaptive mechanism is applied to fuse their outcomes. Extensive experiments on MS COCO, Pascal-VOC, Cifar-100, and ImageNet show that our CAT outperforms the existing state-of-the-art attention mechanisms in object detection, instance segmentation, and image classification. The model and code will be released soon.

Peanut hulls (Arachis hypogaea, Leguminosae), which are a side stream of global peanut processing, are rich in bioactive flavonoids such as luteolin, eriodictyol, and 5,7-dihydroxychromone. This study aimed to isolate these flavonoid derivatives by liquid-liquid chromatography with as few steps as possible. To this end, luteolin, eriodictyol and 5,7-dihydroxychromone were isolated from peanut hulls using two different techniques, high-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC) and fast-centrifugal partition chromatography (FCPC). The suitability of the biphasic solvent system composed of n-hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water (1.0/1.0/1.0/1.5; v/v/v/v) was determined by the Conductor like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS), which allowed the partition ratio KD-values of the three main flavonoids to be calculated. After a one-step HPCCC separation of ~1000 mg of an ethanolic peanut hull extract, 15 mg of luteolin and 8 mg of eriodictyol were isolated with purities over 96%. Furthermore, 3 mg of 5,7-dihydroxychromone could be isolated after purification by semi-preparative reversed-phase liquid chromatography (semi-prep. HPLC) in purity of over 99%. The compounds were identified by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).

This paper focuses on the 3D modeling of the interior spaces of buildings. Three-dimensional point clouds from laser scanners can be considered the most widely used data for 3D indoor modeling. Therefore, the walls, ceiling and floor are extracted as the main structural fabric and reconstructed. In this paper, a method is presented to tackle the problems related to the data including obstruction, clutter and noise. This method reconstructs indoor space in a model-driven approach using watertight predefined models. Employing the two-step implementation of this process, the algorithm is able to model non-rectangular spaces with an even number of sides. Afterwards, an “improvement” process increases the level of details by modeling the intrusion and protrusion of the model. The 3D model is formed by extrusion from 2D to 3D. The proposed model-driven algorithm is evaluated with four benchmark real-world datasets. The efficacy of the proposed method is proved by the range of [77%, 95%], [85%, 97%] and [1.7 cm, 2.4 cm] values of completeness, correctness and geometric accuracy, respectively.

The development of automotive components with reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is needed to reduce overall vehicle emissions. Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) supports this by providing holistic information and improvement potentials regarding eco-efficient products. Key factors influencing LCAs of automotive components, such as material production, will change in the future. First approaches for integrating future scenarios for these key factors into LCE already exist, but they only consider a limited number of parameters and scenarios. This work aims to develop a method that can be practically applied in the industry for integrating prospective LCAs (pLCA) into the LCE of automotive components, considering relevant parameters and consistent scenarios. Therefore, pLCA methods are further developed to investigate the influence of future scenarios on the GHG emissions of automotive components. The practical application is demonstrated for a vehicle component with different design options. This paper shows that different development paths of the foreground and background system can shift the ecological optimum of design alternatives. Therefore, future pathways of relevant parameters must be considered comprehensively to reduce GHG emissions of future vehicles. This work contributes to the methodological and practical integration of pLCA into automotive development processes and provides quantitative results.

Objective Chalcone synthase (CHS) catalyzes the initial step of the flavonoid biosynthesis. The CHS encoding gene is well studied in numerous plant species. Rapidly growing sequence databases contain hundreds of CHS entries that are the result of automatic annotation. In this study, we evaluated apparent multiplication of CHS domains in CHS gene models of four plant species. Main findings CHS genes with an apparent triplication of the CHS domain encoding part were discovered through database searches. Such genes were found in Macadamia integrifolia, Musa balbisiana, Musa troglodytarum, and Nymphaea colorata. A manual inspection of the CHS gene models in these four species with massive RNA-seq data suggests that these gene models are the result of artificial fusions in the annotation process. While there are hundreds of seemingly correct CHS records in the databases, it is not clear why these annotation artifacts appeared.

Stable jet electrospinning (SJES) is a special form of optical fiber generation that prevents chaotic fiber whipping typical for conventional electrospinning procedures. Incorporation of highly emissive semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) in such fibers has very high potential in optical data transmission, optological circuits, fiber lasers, solar light concentrators and many other fields because NPLs exhibit strongly directed emission from their surface plane due to various in-plane transition dipole moments. However, potential orientation control of 2D-NPLs in SJES is entirely unknown as electric fields and various mechanical forces contribute in a complex manner simultaneously. Here, the observation of counter-intuitive yet very beneficial orientation of rectangular CdSe/CdS 2D-NLP in SJES perpendicular to the fiber drawing axis is reported. Scanning electron microscopy, 3D-single particle excitation polarization microscopy, 3D-photogoniometry, polarized emission spectroscopy and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) demonstrate aggregation free perpendicular alignment of the NPLs in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers, resulting in dominant emission in directions parallel to the fiber. It is suggested that the observed vertical alignment is due to normal forces resulting from viscoelastic expansion when the polymer solution leaves the cannula (Barus effect) and that using such perpendicular nano-emitter alignment forces allows for the generation of novel materials also beyond fibers.

This study reassesses the optimum matrix composition of Co-Re-Cr-based alloys for strengthening by MC-type carbides. It is found that the composition of Co-15Re-5Cr is ideally suited for this purpose as it allows the solution of the carbide-forming elements such as Ta, Ti, Hf, and C within a matrix consisting entirely of fcc-phase (typically at 1450 °C), having a high solubility for these elements, while precipitation heat treatment (typically at 900-1100 °C) occurs in a hcp-Co matrix, displaying a much lower solubility. In the case of the monocarbides TiC and HfC, this was investigated and achieved for the first time in Co-Re-based alloys. TaC and TiC emerged as suitable particles in Co-Re-Cr alloys for creep applications due to a large population of nano-sized particle precipitation, which is not the case for the mainly coarse HfC. Both Co-15Re-5Cr-xTa-xC and Co-15Re-5Cr-xTi-xC exhibit a formerly unknown maximum solubility close to x = 1.8 at.%. Therefore, further research on the particle-strengthening effect and the governing creep mechanisms of carbide-strengthened Co-Re-Cr alloys should focus on alloys with the following compositions: Co-15Re-5Cr-1.8Ta-1.8C and Co-15Re-5Cr-1.8Ti-1.8C.

Present work investigates the potential of a long-range commercial blended wing body configuration powered by hydrogen combustion engines with future airframe and propulsion technologies. Future technologies include advanced materials, load alleviation techniques, boundary layer ingestion, and ultra-high bypass ratio engines. The hydrogen combustion configuration was compared to the configuration powered by kerosene with respect to geometric properties, performance characteristics, energy demand, equivalent CO2 emissions, and Direct Operating Costs. In addition, technology sensitivity studies were performed to assess the potential influence of each technology on the configuration. A multi-fidelity sizing methodology using low- and mid-fidelity methods for rapid configuration sizing was created to assess the configuration and perform robust analyses and multi-disciplinary optimizations. To assess potential uncertainties of the fidelity of aerodynamic analysis tools, high-fidelity aerodynamic analysis and optimization framework MACHAero was used for additional verification. Comparison of hydrogen and kerosene blended wing body aircraft showed a potential reduction of equivalent CO2 emission by 15% and 81% for blue and green hydrogen compared to the kerosene blended wing body and by 44% and 88% with respect to a conventional B777-300ER aircraft. Advancements in future technologies also significantly affect the geometric layout of aircraft. Boundary layer ingestion and ultra-high bypass ratio engines demonstrated the highest potential for fuel reduction, although both technologies conflict with each other. However, operating costs of hydrogen aircraft could establish a significant problem if pessimistic and base hydrogen price scenarios are achieved for blue and green hydrogen respectively. Finally, configurational problems featured by classical blended wing body aircraft are magnified for the hydrogen case due to the significant volume requirements to store hydrogen fuel.

Adhesive bonding has become increasingly popular in the manufacturing industry due to its many advantages. However, the need to completely fill the joint gap with adhesive for optimum force transfer remains a significant challenge. To ensure full gap filling and therefore joint integrity, safety critical applications often require the adhesive to flow beyond the bonded edges. Due to inadequate design of this process, the adhesive volume that escapes is often more than 30–50% of the adhesive volume. This current practice represents a suboptimal way of proceeding, which the current paper may mitigate. As a result, excessive amounts of adhesive are typically applied due to the lack of suitable models for predicting the flow and final distribution of the adhesive, including the excess amount. This limitation has hindered progress in adhesive bonding technology, and urgent action is needed to address this issue. This paper offers a solution to the significant challenge of predicting adhesive flow and distribution in manufacturing applications. The authors have developed and validated a model that allows the simulation of these complex processes. The paper goes further to present initial application patterns aimed at minimising adhesive waste while ensuring the full filling of the overlap. To achieve this, the authors employ a procedure that involves an advanced reverse squeeze flow simulation to derive an optimal application pattern from a simple initial design. It turns out that a wide range of different final distributions can be produced by a variety of initial star-shaped forms. This paper represents a significant contribution to adhesive bonding technology for anyone interested in manufacturing efficiency.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the bottleneck in the development of new drugs to reach the brain. Due to the BBB, toxic substances cannot enter the brain, but promising drug candidates also pass the BBB poorly. Suitable in vitro BBB models are therefore of particular importance during the preclinical development process, as they can not only reduce animal testing but also enable new drugs to be developed more quickly. The aim of this study was to isolate cerebral endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes from the porcine brain to produce a primary model of the BBB. Additionally, as primary cells are well suited by their properties but the isolation is complex and better reproducibility with immortalized cells must be ensured, there is a high demand for immortalized cells with suitable properties for use as a BBB model. Thus, isolated primary cells can also serve as the basis for a suitable immortalization technique to generate new cell lines. In this work, cerebral endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes were successfully isolated and expanded using a mechanical/enzymatic method. Furthermore, in a triple coculture model, the cells showed a significant increase in barrier integrity compared with endothelial cell monoculture, as determined by transendothelial electrical resistance measurement and permeation studies using sodium fluorescein. The results demonstrate the opportunity to obtain all three cell types significantly involved in BBB formation from one species, thus providing a suitable tool for testing the permeation properties of new drug candidates. In addition, the protocols are a promising starting point to generate new cell lines of BBB-forming cells as a novel approach for BBB in vitro models.

With the increasing industrial relevance of new quantum technologies, a well-educated quantum workforce becomes increasingly crucial. The foreseeable lack of workforce raises important questions. What are the expectations regarding the future relevance of second-generation quantum technologies? What are the requirements for the workforce in the coming quantum industry? Which competences, knowledge, and skills should future employees have? In this paper, we report the results of our study that were aimed at mapping requirements and forecasts for the future quantum workforce. Our study consisted of three consecutive survey rounds. In total, we gathered 188 responses from industry and academic experts across Europe. Our study results served as an input for the development of the European Competence Framework for Quantum Technologies, delivered by the project QTEdu CSA for the European Quantum Flagship. In addition, we will discuss predictions from experts related to the future quantum workforce, including the expected industrial relevance of the main areas of quantum technologies, the need for educational efforts, and the expected influence of quantum technologies on everyday life.

Despite numerous research on new active materials for anodes, graphite remains the most commonly used material in Li-ion batteries. The spherical shape of the graphite particles has proven to be beneficial for application in electric vehicles, especially for fast charging. So far, the spheroidization of natural flake graphite is conducted by a rigid and inefficient cascade process. In this work, a scalable classifier system was used for spheroidization, and it was demonstrated that a spheroidization time of 15 min is sufficient to improve material properties and enhance electrochemical performance while maintaining high process yields of 55%. Insights into the influence of the morphology on the intrinsic and structural properties of the graphite particles and manufactured electrodes are provided. Spheroidization creates a more efficient pore network in the coating layer while reducing the internal resistance and increasing the surface area of the particles by a factor of 1.8. We demonstrate that the spherical shape improves the discharge rate capability by 1.8, and the specific charge capacity could be enhanced by more than 237% at a C-rate of 3. An additional carbon coating could significantly decrease the specific surface area and increase the specific capacity at high C-rates.

The wave telescope technique is broadly established in the analysis of spacecraft data and serves as a bridge between local measurements and the global picture of spatial structures. The technique is originally based on plane waves and has been extended to spherical waves, phase shifted waves as well as planetary magnetic field representation. The goal of the present study is the extension of the wave telescope technique using electromagnetic knot structures as a basis. As the knots are an exact solution of Maxwell's equations they open the door for a new modeling and interpretation of magnetospheric structures, such as plasmoids.

Climate change is expected to affect the quality of soil and water, resulting in a significant impact on soil water balance in various regions around the world. Soil water potential plays a significant role in influencing evapotranspiration (ET), which is a crucial component of the soil water balance. The matric potential and the osmotic potential are the main components of the soil water potential. The osmotic potential is particularly important in dry soils, salt-affected soils, coastal lands, or when low-quality water is utilized for irrigation. Despite its importance, the impact of osmotic potential on ET has not been well-studied compared to other factors. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the impact of osmotic potential on ET from small-scale lab lysimeters planted with grass and equipped with scales and data loggers connected to computers. To create different osmotic potential levels, we irrigated the lysimeters with two different water qualities: distilled water and 4.79 dS.m−1 NaCl solution. The lysimeters were kept in well-watered conditions, and daily ET was monitored. Our results indicate a strong correlation between osmotic potential and ET. After three months of applying the treatments, the lysimeters with lower osmotic potential had a 39% reduction in cumulative ET compared to those irrigated with distilled water. Moreover, the osmotic stress affected plant health, leading to a notable decrease in the leaf area index and exerting a significant influence on evapotranspiration partitioning components, including transpiration and evaporation.

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is an important technique for the analysis of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). A recently released light-emitting diode (LED)-induced fluorescence (LEDIF) detector equipped with a 275 nm LED for the detection of proteins through their native fluorescence was used in this study and compared to results obtained using the predominant detection mode, the measurement of the absorption of ultraviolet light (UV detection). This was accomplished using an established CZE method for the analysis of three mAbs: NISTmAb, matuzumab, and Intact Mass Check Standard (Waters). For this purpose, the detector’s settings were first optimized using a design of experiments approach. Three factors, rise time, photomultiplier high voltage supply, and acquisition frequency, were optimized by means of a D-optimal design. The optimal settings were then used for the investigation of signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns), linearity, and precision. LEDIF detection offered a similar separation quality, up to 12 times higher S/Ns, and lower limits of detection compared to UV detection. With an increasing number of electric vehicles on roads, recycling is an important topic to design circular supply chains for batteries. To stimulate such circular supply chains, the new EU battery directive includes mandatory recycled content in batteries and recovery rates of materials for lithium-ion batteries on the European market. Modeling the end-of-life of batteries as part of a life cycle assessment (LCA) is methodologically challenging as batteries are quite complex product systems. One of these challenges is the allocation of material impacts from different life cycle stages along subsequent product life cycles. We analyzed the different stakeholders in the life cycle of a lithium-ion battery and identified possible LCA questions based on their decision contexts. For each LCA question, an LCA archetype was defined, which includes the functional unit, the system boundary, and the allocation procedure. These archetypes are applied and tested in a case study. The results show a significant variance depending on the archetype used. This highlights the importance of understanding the stakeholder perspective in LCA and decision support.

People may be exposed to questing Ixodes ricinus ticks in urban settings, e.g. residential gardens. Little is known about the garden characteristics that support a tick population. To determine which features in and around residential gardens support or limit the occurrence and abundance of questing I. ricinus ticks, we sampled them in residential gardens in the Braunschweig region that differed in various intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. We recorded the number of questing nymphal and adult ticks on transects, and by using mixed-effects generalized linear regression models, we related their occurrence and abundance to garden characteristics, meteorological covariates, and landscape features in the vicinity. We detected questing I. ricinus ticks in about 90% of the 103 surveyed gardens. Our occurrence model (marginal R2 = 0.31) predicted the highest probability of questing ticks on transects with hedges or groundcover in gardens, which are located in neighborhoods with large proportions of forest. The abundance of questing ticks was similarly influenced. We conclude that I. ricinus ticks are frequent in residential gardens in Northern Germany and likely associated with intrinsic garden characteristics on a small scale, such as hedges, as well as extrinsic factors on a local scale, such as the proportion of nearby woodland.

IntroductionAlzheimer’s disease (AD), is characterized by a gradual cognitive decline associated with the accumulation of Amyloid beta (Aβ)-oligomers, progressive neuronal degeneration and chronic neuroinflammation. Among the receptors shown to bind and possibly transduce the toxic effects of Aβ-oligomers is the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). Interestingly, p75NTR mediates several crucial processes in the nervous system, including neuronal survival and apoptosis, maintenance of the neuronal architecture, and plasticity. Furthermore, p75NTR is also expressed in microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, where it is markedly increased under pathological conditions. These observations indicate p75NTR as a potential candidate for mediating Aβ-induced toxic effects at the interface between the nervous and the immune system, thereby potentially participating in the crosstalk between these two systems.MethodsHere we used APP/PS1 transgenic mice (APP/PS1tg) and compared the Aβ-induced alterations in neuronal function, chronic inflammation as well as their cognitive consequences between 10 months old APP/PS1tg and APP/PS1tg x p75NTRexonIV knockout mice.ResultsElectrophysiological recordings show that a loss of p75NTR rescues the impairment in long-term potentiation at the Schaffer collaterals in the hippocampus of APP/PS1tg mice. Interestingly, however loss of p75NTR does not influence the severity of neuroinflammation, microglia activation or the decline in spatial learning and memory processes observed in APP/PS1tg mice.ConclusionTogether these results indicate that while a deletion of p75NTR rescues the synaptic defect and the impairment in synaptic plasticity, it does not affect the progression of the neuroinflammation and the cognitive decline in a mouse model for AD.

The current work experimentally determined how the initial resistance and gauge factor in additively manufactured piezoresistive sensors are affected by the material, design, and process parameters. This was achieved through the tensile testing of sensors manufactured with different infill angles, layer heights, and sensor thicknesses using two conductive polymer composites. Linear regression models were then used to analyze which of the input parameters had significant effects on the sensor properties and which interaction effects existed. The findings demonstrated that the initial resistance in both materials was strongly dependent on the sensor geometry, decreasing as the cross-sectional area was increased. The resistance was also significantly influenced by the layer height and the infill angle, with the best variants achieving a resistance that was, on average, 22.3% to 66.5% lower than less-favorable combinations, depending on the material. The gauge factor was most significantly affected by the infill angle and, depending on the material, by the layer height. Of particular interest was the finding that increasing in the infill angle resulted in an increase in the sensitivity that outweighed the associated increase in the initial resistance, thereby improving the gauge factor by 30.7% to 114.6%, depending on the material.

It is insightful to report an estimator that describes how certain a model is in a prediction, additionally to the prediction alone. For regression tasks, most approaches implement a variation of the ensemble method, apart from few exceptions. Instead of a single estimator, a group of estimators yields several predictions for an input. The uncertainty can then be quantified by measuring the disagreement between the predictions, for example by the standard deviation. In theory, ensembles should not only provide uncertainties, they also boost the predictive performance by reducing errors arising from variance. Despite the development of novel methods, they are still considered the “golden-standard” to quantify the uncertainty of regression models. Subsampling-based methods to obtain ensembles can be applied to all models, regardless whether they are related to deep learning or traditional machine learning. However, little attention has been given to the question whether the ensemble method is applicable to virtually all scenarios occurring in the field of cheminformatics. In a widespread and diversified attempt, ensembles are evaluated for 32 datasets of different sizes and modeling difficulty, ranging from physicochemical properties to biological activities. For increasing ensemble sizes with up to 200 members, the predictive performance as well as the applicability as uncertainty estimator are shown for all combinations of five modeling techniques and four molecular featurizations. Useful recommendations were derived for practitioners regarding the success and minimum size of ensembles, depending on whether predictive performance or uncertainty quantification is of more importance for the task at hand.

IntroductionThe cerebellum is organized into functional regions each dedicated to process different motor or sensory inputs for controlling different locomotor behaviors. This functional regionalization is prominent in the evolutionary conserved single-cell layered Purkinje cell (PC) population. Fragmented gene expression domains suggest a genetic organization of PC layer regionalization during cerebellum development. However, the establishment of such functionally specific domains during PC differentiation remained elusive.Methods and resultsWe show the progressive emergence of functional regionalization of PCs from broad responses to spatially restricted regions in zebrafish by means of in vivo Ca2+-imaging during stereotypic locomotive behavior. Moreover, we reveal that formation of new dendritic spines during cerebellar development using in vivo imaging parallels the time course of functional domain development. Pharmacological as well as cell-type specific optogenetic inhibition of PC neuronal activity results in reduced PC dendritic spine density and an altered stagnant pattern of functional domain formation in the PC layer.DiscussionHence, our study suggests that functional regionalization of the PC layer is driven by physiological activity of maturing PCs themselves.

The molecule of the title compound, C17H11NO2S, is almost planar, with an interplanar angle of 3.01 (3)° between the benzothiazole and chromene ring systems. A short intramolecular S...O=C contact of 2.727 (2) Å is observed. The crystal packing involves a layer structure parallel to (211), containing dimeric inversion-symmetric units connected by a `weak' C—H...O=C hydrogen bond.

For modeling flow and transport processes in the soil–plant–atmosphere system, knowledge of the unsaturated hydraulic properties in functional form is mandatory. While much data are available for the water retention function, the hydraulic conductivity function often needs to be predicted. The classical approach is to predict the relative conductivity from the retention function and scale it with the measured saturated conductivity, Ks. In this paper we highlight the shortcomings of this approach, namely, that measured Ks values are often highly uncertain and biased, resulting in poor predictions of the unsaturated conductivity function. We propose to reformulate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function by replacing the soil-specific Ks as a scaling factor with a generally applicable effective saturated tortuosity parameter τs and predicting total conductivity using only the water retention curve. Using four different unimodal expressions for the water retention curve, a soil-independent general value for τs was derived by fitting the new formulation to 12 data sets containing the relevant information. τs was found to be approximately 0.1. Testing of the new prediction scheme with independent data showed a mean error between the fully predicted conductivity functions and measured data of less than half an order of magnitude. The new scheme can be used when insufficient or no conductivity data are available. The model also helps to predict the saturated conductivity of the soil matrix alone and thus to distinguish between the macropore conductivity and the soil matrix conductivity.

The title compound, C23H15BrN2OS, was the unexpected product in an attempted synthesis of the isomeric 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-6-bromo-1-p-tolylquinolin-2(1H)-one. The Cchromene=N—C angle is wide [125.28 (8)°]. The benzothiazole and chromene ring systems are almost coplanar, with their planes parallel to (1\overline{1}0); the toluene ring system is rotated by ca 40° out of the chromene plane. The molecular packing involves layers with π-stacking, borderline `weak' hydrogen bonds and possible C—H...π contacts.

Zebrafish have an impressive capacity to regenerate neurons in the central nervous system. However, regeneration of the principal neuron of the evolutionary conserved cerebellum, the Purkinje cell (PC), is believed to be limited to developmental stages based on invasive lesions. In contrast, non-invasive cell type-specific ablation by induced apoptosis closely represents a process of neurodegeneration. We demonstrate that the ablated larval PC population entirely recovers in number, quickly reestablishes electrophysiological properties, and properly integrates into circuits to regulate cerebellum-controlled behavior. PC progenitors are present in larvae and adults, and PC ablation in adult cerebelli results in an impressive PC regeneration of different PC subtypes able to restore behavioral impairments. Interestingly, caudal PCs are more resistant to ablation and regenerate more efficiently, suggesting a rostro-caudal pattern of de- and regeneration properties. These findings demonstrate that the zebrafish cerebellum is able to regenerate functional PCs during all stages of the animal’s life.

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of the $S=1$ quantum spin chain subjected to a time-dependent external drive, where the driving frequency is adiabatically decreased as a function of time (``Floquet adiabatic evolution''). We show that when driving the rhombic anisotropy term (known as the ``two-axis countertwisting'' in the context of squeezed spin states) of a N\'eel antiferromagnet, we are able to induce an overall enhancement in the quadrupole polarization, while at the same time suppressing the staggered magnetization order. The system evolves into a new state with a net quadrupole moment and antiferroquadrupolar correlations. This state remains stable at long times once the driving frequency is kept constant. On the other hand, we find that we cannot achieve a quadrupole polarization for the symmetry-protected Haldane phase, which remains robust against such driving.

To adapt porous material for its application as low noise trailing edge, a special rolling process, using a time-varied rolling gap, was used in previous research to produce a porosity gradient in the direction of rolling. Investigations suggest that a gradient in porosity may also be produced in the thickness direction of the material, i.e., in the rolling gap direction, without using a specialized rolling mill. Such a gradient may help to further increase acoustic efficiency of porous materials. The aim of this study was to analyze the dependency of such a gradient on the rolling parameters, and to clarify which stress components are significantly responsible for an increased near-surface compaction. Experiments using different relative compressed lengths were performed to analyze shear-dominated and friction-dominated rolling. The material was characterized using compression tests, computed tomography and flow resistance measurements. It is shown that the compressed length is an important parameter for adjusting a porosity gradient. Rolling with small values of compressed length during all rolling passes leads to increased compaction of near-surface regions, compared to interior ones. The difference in porosity achieved was up to 15%. Furthermore, the results suggested that a gradient in hydrostatic stress is responsible for the porosity gradient. Validation of the results by FE simulation is forthcoming, but not part of this publication.

Influenza A virus (IAV) subtypes are a major cause of illness and mortality worldwide and pose a threat to human health. Although IAV infection is considered a self-limiting respiratory syndrome, an expanded spectrum of cerebral manifestations has been reported following IAV infection. Neurotropic IAVs, such as the H7N7 subtype, are capable of invading the central nervous system (CNS) and replicating in brain cells, resulting in microglia-induced neuroinflammation. Microglial cells, the brain’s resident immune cells, are instrumental in the inflammatory response to viral infection. While activation of microglia is important to initially contain the virus, excessive activation of these cells leads to neuronal damage. Previous studies have shown that acute and even long-term IAV-induced neuroinflammation leads to CNS damage. Therefore, the search for possible preventive or therapeutic strategies is of great importance. In this study, we investigated the potential effect of vaccination against acute neuroinflammation induced by H7N7 infection and subsequent neuronal damage in the hippocampus, a particularly vulnerable brain region, comparing young and aged mice. Immunosenescence is one of the striking pathophysiological changes during mammalian aging that leads to “inflammaging” and critically limits the protection by vaccines in the elderly. The results suggest that formalin-inactivated H7N7 vaccine has a preventive effect against the inflammatory responses in the periphery and also in the CNS after H7N7 infection. Cytokine and chemokine levels, increased microglial density, and cell volume after H7N7 infection were all attenuated by vaccination. Further structural analysis of microglial cells also revealed a change in branching complexity after H7N7 infection, most likely reflecting the neuroprotective effect of the vaccination. In addition, synapse loss was prevented in vaccinated mice. Remarkably, engulfment of post-synaptic compartments by microglia can be proposed as the underlying mechanism for spine loss triggered by H7N7 infection, which was partially modulated by vaccination. Although young mice showed better protection against neuroinflammation and the resulting deleterious neuronal effects upon vaccination, a beneficial role of the vaccine was also observed in the brains of older mice. Therefore, vaccination can be proposed as an important strategy to prevent neurological sequelae of H7N7 infection.

Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs) of the Gram-negative marine bacterium Dinoroseobacter shibae, a member of the Roseobacteraceae, were investigated for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Extracts of vesicles were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In these analyses the short fatty acid (Z)-5-dodecenoic acid (1) and the related, more volatile aldehyde (Z)-5-dodecenal (8) were identified as VOCs of the OMVs. The aldehyde 8 has not yet been reported before from bacteria. Due to their possible function as signaling molecules, both compounds were tested for Quorum Sensing (QS) inhibition in a bioassay against the QS sensor strain Pseudomonas putida F117 (pKRC12) responsive to long-chain N-acylhomoserine lactones, the effectors of the sensor. Both compounds showed QS inhibitory activity. The potential function of VOCs in OMVs which has not been observed previously is discussed.

The title compounds, C15H14N2OS (1a), C16H16N2OS (1b), and C17H18N2OS (1c), form a homologous series in which the size of the saturated ring increases from six- to eight-membered (with four, five and six methylene groups respectively). For 1b and 1c, the central (CH2)n moieties are all displaced to the same side of their ring, and the CH2—CH2—CH2 angles are much wider than the standard sp3 value; a database search indicates that these are general features of such ring systems. For 1a, the thiophene ring lies with the sulfur atom on the opposite side of the Cthiophene—Cpyridine bond to the cyano group, in contrast to 1b and 1c. For each compound, the packing may be described in terms of two `weak' C—H⋯N hydrogen bonds, which link the molecules to form one-dimensional (1a, 1c) or three-dimensional (1b) assemblies.

Additive manufacturing with steel offers new opportunities for the construction sector. In particular, direct energy deposition (DED) processes such as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM or DED-Arc), are able to create large structures with a high degree of geometric freedom, like force-flow-optimized steel nodes and frameworks, as well as truss structures. By using high-strength steel, manufacturing times can be shortened because less material has to be applied. In order to enable the usage of WAAM components in the construction industry, profound knowledge of the material behavior is necessary. Based on reliable process parameters, extensive experimental and numerical investigations are carried out to characterize the influence of layer orientation and overhang angle on the mechanical parameters of WAAM high-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) walls. The results have been compared to HSLA steel sheet material. It is shown that comparable characteristics exist for Young’s modulus E, yield strength Rp,0.2 and tensile strength Rm with regard to civil engineering applications. The influence of the loading direction on the material level is similar. Only the yield strength shows a slight dependence on the layer orientation for WAAM walls (difference 4.5%). The overhang angle has no influence on the material parameters.

Electrolyte filling and wetting is a quality-critical and cost-intensive process step of battery cell production. Due to the importance of this process, a steadily increasing number of publications is emerging for its different influences and factors. We conducted a systematic literature review to identify common parameters that influence wetting behavior in experimental settings, specifically focusing on material, processes, and experimental measurement methods but excluding simulation studies. We reduced the initially found 544 records systematically to 39 fully labeled articles. Our profound analysis guided by attributed labelings revealed current research gaps such as the lack of a holistic view on measurement methods for filling and wetting, underrepresented studies relevant to series production, as well as the negligence of research targeting the transferability of results from the material to the cell level, while also examining the measured variables’ interactions. After comparatively illustrating and discussing implications of our findings, we also discussed limitations of our contribution and suggested ideas for potential further research topics.

The administration of living microorganisms is of special interest, with regard to probiotic microorganisms providing health benefits to the patient. Effective dosage forms require the preservation of microbial viability until administration. Storage stability can be improved by drying, and the tablet is an especially attractive final solid dosage form due to its ease of administration and its good patient compliance. In this study, drying of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae via fluidized bed spray granulation is investigated, as the probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii is a variety of it. Fluidized bed granulation enables faster drying than lyophilization on the one hand and lower temperatures than spray drying on the other hand, which are the two predominantly used techniques for life-sustaining drying of microorganisms. Yeast cell suspensions enriched with protective additives were sprayed onto the carrier particles of common tableting excipients, namely, dicalcium phosphate (DCP), lactose (LAC) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Different protectants, such as mono-, di-, oligo- and polysaccharides, but also skimmed milk powder and one alditol, were tested; as they themselves, or chemically similar molecules, are known from other drying technologies to stabilize biological structures such as cell membranes, and thus, improve survival during dehydration. With the combined use of trehalose and skimmed milk powder, survival rates were 300 times higher than without the use of protective additives. In addition to these formulation aspects, the influence of process parameters such as inlet temperature and spray rate were considered. The granulated products were characterized regarding their particle size distribution, moisture content and the viability of the yeast cells. It has been shown that thermal stress on the microorganisms is especially critical, which can be reduced, for example, by reducing the inlet temperature or increasing the spray rate; however, formulation parameters such as cell concentration also influenced survival. The results were used to specify the influencing factors on the survival of microorganisms during fluidized bed granulation and to derive their linkages. Granules based on the three different carrier materials were tableted and the survival of the microorganisms was evaluated and linked to the tablet tensile strength achieved. Using LAC enabled the highest survival of the microorganisms throughout the considered process chain.

To achieve high efficiency and low degradation of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC), it is necessary to maintain an appropriate level of humidification in the fuel cell membrane. Thus, membrane humidifiers are typically used in PEMFC systems. Parameter studies are important to evaluate membrane humidifiers under various operating conditions to reduce the amount of physical tests. However, simulative studies are computationally expensive when using detailed models. To reduce the computational cost, surrogate models are set up. In our study, a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a hollow fibre membrane humidifier is presented and validated using measurement data. Based on the results of the validated CFD model, a surrogate model of the humidifier is constructed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) in combination with different interpolation methods. To evaluate the surrogate models, their results are compared against reference solutions from the CFD model. Our results show that a Halton design combined with a thin-plate-spline interpolation results in the most accurate surrogate humidifier model. Its normalised mean absolute error for 18 test points when predicting the water mass fraction in the membrane humidifier is 0.58%. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the solutions of the POD model can be used to initialise CFD calculations and thus accelerate the calculation of steady state CFD solutions.

We computationally explore the relationship between surface–subsurface exchange and hydrological response in a headwater-dominated high elevation, mountainous catchment in East River Watershed, Colorado, USA. In order to isolate the effect of surface–subsurface exchange on the hydrological response, we compare three model variations that differ only in soil permeability. Traditional methods of hydrograph analysis that have been developed for headwater catchments may fail to properly characterize catchments, where catchment response is tightly coupled to headwater inflow. Analyzing the spatially distributed hydrological response of such catchments gives additional information on the catchment functioning. Thus, we compute hydrographs, hydrological indices, and spatio-temporal distributions of hydrological variables. The indices and distributions are then linked to the hydrograph at the outlet of the catchment. Our results show that changes in the surface–subsurface exchange fluxes trigger different flow regimes, connectivity dynamics, and runoff generation mechanisms inside the catchment, and hence, affect the distributed hydrological response. Further, changes in surface–subsurface exchange rates lead to a nonlinear change in the degree of connectivity—quantified through the number of disconnected clusters of ponding water—in the catchment. Although the runoff formation in the catchment changes significantly, these changes do not significantly alter the aggregated streamflow hydrograph. This hints at a crucial gap in our ability to infer catchment function from aggregated signatures. We show that while these changes in distributed hydrological response may not always be observable through aggregated hydrological signatures, they can be quantified through the use of indices of connectivity.

Recent research efforts have highlighted the potential of hybrid composites in the context of additive manufacturing. The use of hybrid composites can lead to an enhanced adaptability of the mechanical properties to the specific loading case. Furthermore, the hybridization of multiple fiber materials can result in positive hybrid effects such as increased stiffness or strength. In contrast to the literature, where only the interply and intrayarn approach has been experimentally validated, this study presents a new intraply approach, which is experimentally and numerically investigated. Three different types of tensile specimens were tested. The non-hybrid tensile specimens were reinforced with contour-based fiber strands of carbon and glass. In addition, hybrid tensile specimens were manufactured using an intraply approach with alternating carbon and glass fiber strands in a layer plane. In addition to experimental testing, a finite element model was developed to better understand the failure modes of the hybrid and non-hybrid specimens. The failure was estimated using the Hashin and Tsai–Wu failure criteria. The specimens showed similar strengths but greatly different stiffnesses based on the experimental results. The hybrid specimens demonstrated a significant positive hybrid effect in terms of stiffness. Using FEA, the failure load and fracture locations of the specimens were determined with good accuracy. Microstructural investigations of the fracture surfaces showed notable evidence of delamination between the different fiber strands of the hybrid specimens. In addition to delamination, strong debonding was particularly evident in all specimen types.

One approach to reducing the environmental footprint of conventional polymers is to compound them with bio-based fillers. Plant-based materials have already been successfully used as polymer fillers. In this context, algae-based fillers received minor attention. Due to their unique growth efficiency and ability to capture large amounts of CO2, the use of algae-based fillers could have economic and ecologic advantages. In this work, a possible use of algae as a sustainable filler for filament materials was technologically evaluated. In practical investigations, conventional polyethylene-terephthalate-glycol (PETG) was mixed with the microalgae spirulina platensis and chlorella vulgaris and extruded to 3D printing filaments. Based on printed test specimens and material samples, the printability, mechanical, and thermal properties of the composite were determined. Filaments with a homogeneous distribution of algae particles and stable diameters up to a filler content of 30 wt.% could be produced. All filaments had good printability and adequate moisture sensitivity for higher algae contents. For 30 wt.% the tensile strength of the produced filaments decreases from 54 MPa to 24 MPa, the flexural strength decreases from 87 MPa to 69 MPa, and the material operating temperature decreases slightly from 70 °C to 66 °C. The addition of smaller amounts of algae results in minor changes regarding the overall performance. The properties of the material were comparable to those of other natural fillers such as wood, bamboo or cork. The main objective of adding bio-based materials to polymeric matrices can be achieved. Our results suggest that algae-based filaments can be produced as a more sustainable and low-cost material.

Background: Synaptic plasticity requires constant adaptation of functional and structural features at individual synaptic connections. Rapid re-modulation of the synaptic actin cytoskeleton provides the scaffold orchestrating both morphological and functional modifications. A major regulator of actin polymerization not only in neurons but also in various other cell types is the actin-binding protein profilin. While profilin is known to mediate the ADP to ATP exchange at actin monomers through its direct interaction with G-actin, it additionally is able to influence actin dynamics by binding to membrane-bound phospholipids as phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-bisphosphate (PIP2) as well as several other proteins containing poly-L-proline motifs including actin modulators like Ena/VASP, WAVE/WASP or formins. Notably, these interactions are proposed to be mediated by a fine-tuned regulation of post-translational phosphorylation of profilin. However, while phosphorylation sites of the ubiquitously expressed isoform profilin1 have been described and analyzed previously, there is still only little known about the phosphorylation of the profilin2a isoform predominantly expressed in neurons.Methods: Here, utilizing a knock-down/knock-in approach, we replaced endogenously expressed profilin2a by (de)phospho-mutants of S137 known to alter actin-, PIP2 and PLP-binding properties of profilin2a and analyzed their effect on general actin dynamics as well as activity-dependent structural plasticity.Results and Discussion: Our findings suggest that a precisely timed regulation of profilin2a phosphorylation at S137 is needed to mediate actin dynamics and structural plasticity bidirectionally during long-term potentiation and long-term depression, respectively.

An innovative polymer-based electro-sensor decorated with Tb nanoparticles has been developed for the first time. The fabricated sensor was utilized for trace determination of favipiravir (FAV), a recently US FDA-approved antiviral drug for the treatment of COVID-19. Different techniques, including ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-VIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were applied for the characterization of the developed electrode TbNPs@ poly m-THB/PGE. Various experimental variables, including pH, potential range, polymer concentration, number of cycles, scan rate and deposition time, were optimized. Moreover, different voltammetric parameters were examined and optimized. The presented SWV method showed linearity over the range of 10–150 × 10−9 M with a good correlation coefficient (R = 0.9994), and the detection limit (LOD) reached 3.1 × 10−9 M. The proposed method was applied for the quantification of FAV in tablet dosage forms and in human plasma without any interference from complex matrices, obtaining good % recovery results (98.58–101.93%).

Background During the last decades, the Open Access paradigm has become an important approach for publishing new scientific knowledge. From 2015 to 2020, the Trans-O-MIM research project was undertaken with the intention to identify and to explore solutions in transforming subscription-based journals into Open Access journals. Trans-O-MIM stands for strategies, models, and evaluation metrics for the goal-oriented, stepwise, sustainable, and fair transformation of established subscription-based scientific journals into Open-Access-based journals with Methods of Information in Medicine as an example. Objectives To present an overview of the outcomes of the Trans-O-MIM research project as a whole and to share our major lessons learned. Methods As an approach for transforming journals, a Tandem Model has been proposed and implemented for Methods of Information in Medicine. For developing a metric to observe and assess journal transformations, scenario analysis has been used. A qualitative and a two-tier quantitative study on drivers and obstacles of Open Access publishing for medical informatics researchers was designed and conducted. A project setup with a research team, a steering committee, and an international advisory board was established. Major international medical informatics events have been used for reporting and for receiving feedback. Results Based on the Tandem Model, the journal Methods of Information in Medicine has been transformed into a journal where, in addition to its subscription-based track, from 2017 onwards a Gold Open Access track has been successfully added. An evaluation metric, composed of 5 scenarios and 65 parameters, has been developed, which can assist respective decision makers in assessing such transformations. The studies on drivers and obstacles of Open Access publishing showed that, while most researchers support the idea of making scientific knowledge freely accessible to everyone, they are hesitant about actually living this practice by choosing Open Access journals to publish their own work. Article-processing charges and quality issues are perceived as the main obstacles in this respect, revealing a two-sided evaluation of Open Access models, reflecting the different viewpoints of researchers as authors or readers. Especially researchers from low-income countries benefit from a barrier-free communication mainly in their role as readers and much less in their role as authors of scientific information. This became also evident at the institutional level, as Open Access policies or financial support through funding bodies are most prevalent in Europe and North America. Conclusions With Trans-O-MIM, an international research project was performed. An existing journal has been transformed. In addition, with the support of the International Medical Informatics Association, as well as of the European Federation for Medical Informatics and of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology as European and German medical informatics organizations, we did run an international experiment on Open Access incentives. Both together are, as far as the authors know, unique. We therefore expect that this research could add new knowledge on Open Access transformation.

An ion chromatography technique with conductivity detection was selected as an analytical tool for the simultaneous indirect determination of sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate via their respective cations. The method was developed and validated for the quantitative assay of the inorganic salts under study in oral pharmaceutical dosage forms. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Dionex®IonPac® CS16 column (250 × 5 mm) column using the gradient elution method. A mobile phase-A consisting of methane sulfonic acid (6.7%, v/v) in Milli-Q water, which is used together with Milli-Q water, was used as a mobile Phase-B. The flow rate was 1.2 mL/min. The retention times of sodium, potassium, and magnesium as sulfates were 7.8, 12.8, and 16.2 min, respectively. The method was validated according to ICH guidelines and showed good linearity and accuracy results within concentration ranges of 80.0–240.0, 20.0–60.0, and 4.5–13.5 ppm for sodium, potassium, and magnesium as sulfates, respectively. The relative standard deviation results for intra- and inter-day precision were less than 1.0%. The method was applied successfully for determination of the analytes under study in their mixed pharmaceutical oral solution and found suitable for their routine and stability analysis.

Background The paper examines whether the widespread assumption holds that younger birth cohorts (referred to as Millennials or Generation Y) act as pioneers of changing everyday mobility. Methodology Based on the time-series dataset "Mobility in Germany" (Mobilität in Deutschland), cohort-specific changes in everyday bicycle and car use that have occurred between 2002 and 2017 are analyzed. The empirical analyses are differentiated by age-group and settlement type. Additionally, socio-structural factors are taken into account. Results The results show a decline in the predominant everyday use of cars in metropolitan cities, especially among Generation Y. However, the Millennials do not emerge as pioneers of the trend toward predominant bicycle use. The results challenge the assumption that changes in everyday mobility are essentially driven by generational change.

In recent years, the use of Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) for strengthening standardized steel elements received significant interest within the research community. The reason for this lies in the theoretical potential of WAAM to improve the economic and environmental aspects of contemporary steel construction through efficient material consumption. As efficiency is often obtained through detailed design study, the paper presents a design exploration of suitable stiffener geometries under the assumption of infinite geometrical freedom. The assumption is eventually invalidated as process constraints specific to the generated geometries emerge from test trials. Once identified, process constraints are documented and overcome through adequate and precise path planning. Feasibility analysis is an important step between design and fabrication, especially in the case of large-scale or geometrically complex components. With reference to the case of stiffeners, a feasibility analysis is necessary to take into account the specific geometrical limits of the build volume, which is not typically the case for conventional WAAM fabrication. The current research provides the first investigation to understand the means for future on-site WAAM strengthening of existing steel structural elements.

To improve the performance of lead-free piezoelectric composites, the functionalization of the filler particles has been suggested as a successful strategy in several recent reports. The details of the functionalization process, however, are not clear, nor is its influence on the dielectric properties of the composites. This study reports a systematic investigation of the functionalization process parameters of barium titanate nanoparticles (BTONP) with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPM) used as a linker to an acrylate-based matrix polymer. Functionalization process temperature, time, functionalization agent ratio, solvent, and catalyst influence on the functionalization degree were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Elevated temperature and average functionalization time led to the highest functionalization degree in the form of a TMSPM monolayer on the particle surface. Three solvents, with and without catalysts, were investigated and two types of functionalized BTONP were selected for composite manufacturing. To this end, the functionalized particles were used to manufacture 10 vol.% BTONP/photopolymer UV light-curable composite suspensions. After solidification of the suspensions by exposure to UV light, the microstructure and dielectric properties of the resulting composites were investigated. It was seen that functionalization improves the dispersion of particles, increases suspension viscosity, and decreases the curing depth and dielectric properties.

The most precise measurement tools of humankind are equipped with ultra-stable lasers. State-of-the-art laser stabilization techniques are based on external cavities, that are limited by noise originated in the coatings of the cavity mirrors. Microstructured mirror coatings (so-called meta-mirrors) are a promising technology to overcome the limitations of coating noise and therewith pave the way towards next-generation ultra-stable lasers. We present experimental realization of a 12,000-finesse optical cavity based on one low-noise meta-mirror. The use of the mirrors studied here in cryogenic silicon cavities represents an order of magnitude reduction in the current limiting mirror noise, such that the stability limit due to fundamental noise can be reduced to 5 × 10−18.

Hard carbon (HC) was successfully synthesized using a bio-waste precursor from Musa acuminata fiber (MaF) as an eco-friendly option through the pyrolysis process at 500 °C. Further, it was activated using the chemical activating agents, NaOH and ZnCl2, at 900 °C, named Na–MaFDHC and Zn–MaFDHC. The MaFDHCs are employed as anode materials for emerging sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). The nitrogen (N2) adsorption and desorption studies and HRTEM images resulted that the MaFDHCs have a mesoporous nature. The surface area and pore diameter of the carbon materials are increased significantly after the treatment with activating agents, which are important factors for anodes of NIBs. The electrochemical performance of the MaFDHCs depends on the activation agent. Zn–MaFDHC with a higher surface area showed better results, yielding a charge capacity of about 114 mAh g−1 at a 1C rate.

Nanoparticle–polymer hybrids are becoming increasingly important because seemingly contrasting properties, such as mechanical stability and high elasticity, can be combined into one material. In particular, hybrids made of self-assembled polymers are of growing interest since they exhibit high structural precision and diversity and the subsequent reorganization of the nanoparticles is possible. In this work, we show, for the first time, how hybrids of silica nanoparticles and self-assembled vesicles of polystyrene-block-polyacrylic acid can be prepared using the simple and inexpensive method of co-precipitation, highlighting in particular the challenges of using silica instead of other previously well-researched materials, such as gold. The aim was to investigate the influence of the type of modification and the particle size of the silica nanoparticles on the encapsulation and structure of the polymer vesicles. For this purpose, we first needed to adjust the surface properties of the nanoparticles, which we achieved with a two-step modification procedure using APTES and carboxylic acids of different chain lengths. We found that silica nanoparticles modified only with APTES could be successfully encapsulated, while those modified with APTES and decanoic acid resulted in vesicle agglomeration and poor encapsulation due to their strong hydrophobicity. In contrast, no negative effects were observed when different particle sizes (20 nm and 45 nm) were examined.
