There is a need to improve fishing methods to select for certain sizes and species while excluding others. Experiments are conducted to quantify selectivity of fishing gears and how variables such as gear design (e.g., mesh size, mesh shape), environmental parameters (e.g., light, turbidity, substrate) or biological parameters (e.g., fish condition) alter selectivity; the resulting data need to be analyzed using specialized statistical methods in many cases. Here, we present a new tool for analyzing this type of data: an R package named 'selfisher'. It allows estimating multiple fixed effects (e.g., fish length, total catch weight, environmental variables) and random effects (e.g., haul). A bootstrapping procedure is also provided. We demonstrate its use via four case studies, including (A) covered codend analyses of four gears, (B) a paired gear study with numerous covariates, (C) a catch comparison study of unpaired hauls of gillnets and (D) a catch comparison study of paired hauls using polynomials and splines. This software will make it easier to model selectivity, teach statistical methods, and make analyses more repeatable. Des experiences sont menees afin de quantifier la selectivite d'engins de peche et l'influence de variables comme la conception des engins (p. ex. taille et forme des mailles) ou des parametres environnementaux (p. ex. lumiere, turbidite, substrat) ou biologiques (p. ex. embonpoint des poissons) sur la selectivite; dans de nombreux cas, les donnees qui en decoulent doivent etre analysees par des methodes statistiques specialisees. Nous presentons un nouvel outil pour l'analyse de ce type de donnees, un progiciel R appele<>. INTERNATIONAL LEGAL DISCOURSE ON RUSSIA'S INVASION OF UKRAINE Despite Russia's blatant disregard for the most fundamental rules of the international legal order, legal scholarship has made much of the [...], Russia s aggression against Ukraine has brought into focus the growing significance of opensource information for international legal processes. Enabled by novel digital technologies, civil society actors have seized the opportunity provided by the vast amount of publicly available evidence to counter-narrate Russia s pretexts to justify its invasion within the deliberative bodies of the United Nations. This Essay explains the potential of this emerging practice to influence international legal discourse by increasing the costs for actors who base their conduct on false factual claims. The still relatively new practice of open-source investigations by civil society actors has begun to have a discernible effect on how states rationalize their own conduct, and on how other international actors respond to justificatory narratives based on factual manipulations. Open-source investigations are enabled by the ubiquity of publicly available digital information and the development of new technological tools. While the growing significance of this investigative approach has been addressed in a number of recent scholarly publications, they focus mainly on international criminal justice and other accountability mechanisms. (1) Many groups active in the field view individual accountability as the main purpose of their work. (2) This Essay argues that open-source investigations have also begun to shift how legal discourse in international fora unfolds more generally, as demonstrated by the example of deliberative processes at the UN prior to and after the onset of Russia&apos;s aggression against Ukraine in 2022.

Through a review of studies of open science and open behaviors (data sharing, open access publishing, open source software development) and editorial writing that promotes open science, we identify two themes prominent in the advocacy of open science: normative (Mertonian) scientific values and the importance of open systems. We report examples of these themes and suggest that open science advocates understand the movement as a value-driven ethos pursuing improved science through the use of technology. We contend that a belief in the open ethos is distinct from participation in open behaviors and that, consequently, open systems are used by two ideologically distinct user groups. We conclude by discussing the implications of this characterization of open science, focusing on the consequences of different user groups using the same technological systems. As open source software (OSS) is increasingly used as a key input by firms, understanding its impact on productivity becomes critical. This study measures the firm-level productivity impact of nonpecuniary (free) OSS and finds a positive and significant value-added return for firms that have an ecosystem of complementary capabilities. There is no such impact for firms without this ecosystem of complements. Dynamic panel analysis, instrumental variables, and a variety of robustness checks are used to address measurement error concerns and to add support for a more causal interpretation of the results. For firms with an ecosystem of complements, a 1% increase in the use of non-pecuniary OSS leads to an increase in value-added productivity of between 0.002% and 0.008%. This effect is smaller for larger firms, and the results indicate that prior research underestimates the amount of IT firms use. History: Accepted by Chris Forman, information systems.
