Purpose This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of precocious puberty and elucidate the distinct characteristics of each type of perception related to precocious puberty among school-aged children who had undergone treatment for the condition. Methods This study applied the Q methodology to identify and classify the perceptions of precocious puberty among school-aged children who had undergone treatment for the condition. The analysis involved 34 questions from the Q sample and data from 35 individuals in the P sample, using the PC-QUANL Program for analysis. Results The perceptions of precocious puberty among school-aged children who had undergone precocious puberty treatment were classified into the following four types: "shyness - passive self-management," "resentment - suppression," "anxiety - fear," and "adaptation - acceptance." Conclusion This study investigated the experiences and perceptions of children who have undergone treatment for precocious puberty. Through the identification of four types of perceptions, we can see that there is a need to develop an intervention program for nursing that is tailored to the specific type of precocious puberty.

To investigate the association of sexual maturation with body weight excess in Brazilian adolescent students aged 12 to 17 years participating in the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (ERICA). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, using the database of the ERICA Study carried out in 2013 and 2014. To compare the quantitative variables between groups, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Associations between qualitative variables were assessed using Pearson's chi-square test. Univariate and multivariate stepwise forward logistic regression was performed for the association between excess weight and Tanner staging. Results: Precocious pubertal stage was identified in 45.4% of the girls and in 46.3% of the boys, while the prevalence of overweight was 23.8% (95% CI 23.4-24.2) and 25.2% (95% CI 24.7-25.7) in girls and boys, respectively. Girls in the early pubertal stage were 1.32 times more likely to be overweight (95% CI 1.19-1.59) and boys in the early puberal stage were 1.32 times more likely to be overweight (95% CI 1.18-1.50). Conclusion: Brazilian adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age, of both genders, who presented early sexual maturation are more likely to be overweight, which corroborates the findings of other studies, showing the importance of considering sexual maturation when assessing nutritional status. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has demonstrated potential effects on obesity-induced precocious puberty, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Female mice were randomly assigned into control (CON), EGCG-treated (EGCG), high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD with EGCG treatment (HFDEGCG) groups. Key measurements included body weight, vaginal opening time, and serum sex hormone levels. The gut microbiota was analyzed through 16S rRNA sequencing, fecal metabolites were assessed via metabolomics, and the hypothalamic transcriptome was examined using RNA sequencing. EGCG mitigated weight gain and delayed vaginal opening in mice with obesity-induced precocious puberty. Additionally, it reduced serum estradiol levels and decreased the number of mature ovarian follicles in the HFDEGCG group compared to the HFD group. EGCG treatment partially reversed HFD-induced dysbiosis by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia . Metabolomic analysis revealed significant alterations in tryptophan metabolism, while transcriptome analysis identified genes involved in metabolic pathways. Correlation analyses underscored the importance of the gut-brain axis in mediating EGCG's effects. Overall, EGCG prevents obesity-induced precocious puberty by modulating the gut microbiota, altering metabolic pathways, and regulating hypothalamic gene expression.

Objective: To evaluate the level of first morning voided (FMV) urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) in girls with breast development, and to determine the value of FMV urine LH in the evaluation of central precocious puberty (CPP)., Methods: From September 2018 to April 2021, among the patients who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University Third Hospital for "precocious puberty" and underwent gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test, a total of 108 girls were enrolled. According to CPP diagnostic criteria, they were divided into CPP group ( n =45) and non-CPP group ( n =63). The clinical characteristics and hormone levels of the two groups were compared. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the cut-off value of FMV urinary LH in the diagnosis of CPP in girls. Further analyses were done to evaluate the value of FMV urinary LH in the diagnosis of CPP using correlation analysis between urinary LH level and common clinical cha-racteristics., Results: ROC curve analysis showed that FMV urine LH level was significant for the diagnosis of CPP. The cut-off value of FMV urine LH was 0.69 IU/L (specificity 56.9%, sensitivity 85.0%, area under curve 0.804, P < 0.001). The basic clinical characteristics without GnRH stimulation test were analyzed by binary Logistic regression analysis, indicating that the level of FMV urine LH, uterine volume, ovarian volume and advanced T-bone age had predictive significance for CPP diagnosis in girls ( OR values were 2.125, 1.961, 1.564 and 2.672, respectively). The prediction model was established and the area under the ROC curve was 0.904, P < 0.001. The level of FMV urine LH was positively correlated with the levels of serum LH, FSH and estrogen before GnRH stimulation test, the peak value of blood LH after GnRH stimulation test, T bone age and uterine volume, with r values of 0.462, 0.373, 0.242, 0.360, 0.373 and 0.263, respectively, and P values were < 0.001, < 0.001, 0.013, < 0.001, < 0.001 and 0.007, respectively., Conclusion: FMV urine LH can provide a good indication for the diagnosis of CPP. Combining with bone age advanced level and pelvic ultrasound measurement, the predictive value of FMV urine LH can be further improved for the diagnosis of CPP in girls.

Pubertal onset is a complex process, which is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, such as obesity and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. In addition, the timing of normal puberty varies between individuals and is a highly polygenic trait with both rare and common variants. Central precocious puberty (CPP) is defined as the early activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Genetic factors are suggested to account for 50% to 80% of the variation in puberty initiation, as indicated by the greater concordance of pubertal timing observed in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins. Although genetic factors play a crucial role in CPP development, only few associated genes have been identified. To date, four monogenic genes have been identified: KISS1, KISS1R, MKRN3, and DLK1. Moreover, mutation prevalence in these genes varies considerably depending on the ethnicity of patients with CPP. This article reviews the current knowledge on the normal pubertal timing and physiology and discusses the CPP-causing genes.

Purpose Hypothalamic hamartoma (HH), a rare congenital disorder, can cause intractable epilepsy and requires optimal surgical treatment. This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of HH and evaluated seizure outcomes and the safety of gamma-knife radiosurgery (GKS) in HH-related epilepsy to propose an optimal surgical treatment. Methods We reviewed the medical records of 18 patients with HH treated at Samsung Medical Center (1997 to 2018), and analyzed their presenting symptoms, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, treatment, and response. Results The median diagnostic age was 3.2 years. The first presenting symptom was a seizure in six (33.3%), precocious puberty in five (27.8%), both symptoms in six (33.3%), and no symptoms in one patient who was diagnosed incidentally on brain MRI. All mixed and intrahypothalamic types except one had seizures (n=12), while all five parahypothalamic types presented only precocious puberty. Eleven patients showed intractable epilepsy with medications and underwent surgical treatment (most commonly GKS). Eight patients underwent GKS, and two of them received repeated GKS for recurrent seizures. Six patients showed improved seizure control with GKS as the last treatment. Among them, two patients became seizure-free, and one patient had a decreased frequency of seizures after a single GKS. There was no adverse effect related to GKS. Conclusion Intractable epilepsy was the most common indication for surgical treatment of pediatric HH. GKS was effective in controlling seizures in 75% of HH patients without any adverse effects. Repeated GKS could also be considered as a safe option for intractable and disabling seizures.
