Pteronemobius luojishanensis Ma, Yuan & Gu sp. nov. (Figs 1A, B, 5, 6, 7) urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 154912E1-6062-42F0-ADC1-83A8C92AA5DB Chinese name: ḆṞ山异ħDz Etymology. The name is based on the collection site. Holotype. China: Male, Sichuan, Xichang, Luojishan. 27.578°N, 102.425°E. 29-III-2022, coll. Wei Yuan and Chengjie Zheng (SICAU). Paratypes. 2 males & 5 females, with similar information of the holotype (SICAU); 2 males & 4 females, same collection information as the holotype (SNNU). Description. Male. (Figs. 1B, 5B, 7A) The body is uniformly black except tegmen dark brown. Head (Fig. 7E). Vertex protruding; frontal rostrum not obvious; compound eyes developed, median ocellus oval-like and smallest, lateral ocelli slightly rounded; antennal scape shield shaped, approximately equal to rostrum in width; apical joint of maxillary palpus longer than the third, depressed and widened, with rounded apex; apical joint of labial palpus rod-like. Pronotum. Anterior, posterior and lateral margin with several long setae; disc covered fine hairs. Tegmen half the abdominal length; mirror present, dividing vein in middle; apical field short but with a row of large cells; chordal area with three veins, lateral field with 3 parallel longitudinal veins; hind wings absent. Fore femur and middle femur with several long setae; pro-basitarsus, meso-basitarsus and second tarsomere with two apical spines; fore tibia with tympana present on outer side only, with three apical spurs; middle tibia with one apical spur only; hind tibia bearing three dorsal spurs on two sides respectively, of the inside, first spur stubby and removed from others, the basal of third one expanded, apical spurs three inside and outside respectively. Genitalia (Figs. 6A, B, C). In dorsal view, the middle of epiphallus particularly narrowed, widened on both sides; lateral lobes widened and curved inward; ectoparamere rounded, distalis hook-like and bend inward. Female (Figs. 1A, 5A, 7B, 7F). Similar to male but forewings short, veins are different, transverse apically; ovipositor blade-like. Measurements. Male (n=2). This new species is distinguished from other members of the genus by its black body, distinctive wing venation and unique male genitalia. Compared with other Pteronemobius species from China, P. luojishanensis sp. nov. has transverse tegmina with few small cells in the apical area in males. The new species is similar to Pteronemobius yezoensis Shiraki, 1911 in body size, but differs in transverse tegmina. Male (Figs 2C, 4A). Body size medium. Head round, slightly wider than pronotum. Rostrum approximately equal to antennal scape in width. Ocelli oval-like, median ocellus smallest. The apical joint of maxillary palpi longer than the third one, and it depressed, widened and with rounded apex; apical joint of labial palpi rod-like, longer than remaining sections, depressed and widened. Pronotum transverse, bearing bristles. Anterior and posterior margin straight, posterior margin wider than the anterior, both lateral edges slightly concaved in the middle. Tegmen reaching 7th abdominal segment, bearing one oblique vein and three chord veins. Dividing vein longitudinally separates the mirror as two cells. Apical region degraded. The Fore tibia only possesses a long oval-like external tympanum. Hind tibia bearing four dorsal spurs and three apical spurs on each side. Genitalia (Figs. 4D���F). Epiphallus large and dorsally broad, with apical margin broadly and medially concaved and armed with short lateral lobes. Ectoparamere clip-like (laterally viewed) and conspicuously shorter than epiphallus. In lateral view, ectoparamere aremedwith similar upper and lower branches and the upper one significantly and proximally expanded. Female (Figs 3D, 5B). Resembles male. Body size slightly smaller than male. Tegmen short, bearing five regular veins on the dorsal field. Ovipositor is sword-like and slightly shorter than cercus. Coloration. Body yellowish-brown. Four dark longitudinal stripes at the dorsal area of head. Anterior half of the abdomen colored dark brown. The apex of the hind femur bears small dark spots on two sides. The basal part of cercus greenish. Measurements. Male (n=5). BL 6.43��1.43, PL 1.42��0.46, TL 3.75��0.97, HFL 4.69��0.99; Female (n=4). BL 6.03��1.45, PL 1.49��0.31, TL 2.93��0.76, OL 4.10��0.66. Etymology. The name refers to the greenish color of the male's cercus. Distribution (Fig. 1). China (Yunnan). Remarks. This species is very similar to Pteronemobius nitidus (Bol��var, 1901) in appearance and coloration but different in body size and shape of ectoparamere. P. nitidus is larger than the new species (BL 8 mm vs. 6 mm). Description. Male. Body size medium. Head round, slightly wider than pronotum. Rostrum approximately equal to antennal scape in width. Ocelli oval-like, median ocellus smallest of the three. Postclypeus transverse wide and its middle portion convex, anteclypeus concave medially and half-round. Apical joint of maxillary palpi longer than the third, depressed and widened, with rounded apex; apical joint of labial palpi rod-like, longer than remainder sections, depressed and widened. Pronotum transverse wide, bearing bristles; anterior and posterior margin straight, posterior margin wider than the anterior, middle groove distinctly, middle of both lateral edges slightly concave. Tegmen reaching 6th segment of abdomen, bearing an oblique vein and three chord veins, the third one and diagonal vein converge proximally. Dividing vein longitudinal and separating mirror as left and right cells. Apical region degraded, lateral region bearing two Sc branches. Fore tibia only possessing external tympanum, elongate oval-like. Hind tibia bearing four dorsal spurs on two sides respectively, of the inside spurs, first one stubby and far away from others, and the basal of fourth one expanded; apical spurs three inside and outside respectively. Genitalia. In dorsal view, epiphallic upper and lower margin concave medially; lateral lobe somewhat widened at basal part and longer than ectoparamere, curved inward and arc-shaped, distal portion somewhat acute. In ventral view, apical endoparamere funnel-shaped; ectoparamere short and truncated; the basal of guiding rod shaped as triangular. Female. Unknown. Coloration. Body reddish brown. Head brown. Pteronemobius (Pteronemobius) truncates Zhang, Wang & Liu sp. nov. (Figs. 6���7, 16���18) Type material. Holotype: ♂, CHINA, Yunnan, Cangyuan, Banhong, 1.VIII.2013, leg. Yanju Dong. This new species is similar to Pteronemobius (Pteronemobius) indicus (Walker, 1869), but differs from the latter by the lateral lobes of epiphallus short, truncated, and shorter than ectoparameres. Description. Male (Fig. 6 ). Body small-sized and pubescent. Frontal rostrum and feet with black bristles; occiput flat; lateral ocelli ovoid, median ocellus circular; frontal rostrum narrow, almost equal to the width of scapus; apical joint of maxillary palpi longer than the third, rodlike; apical joint of labial palpi horseshoe, truncated at apex. Anterior margin of pronotum narrowed, slightly widened posteriorly, and the anterior and posterior margins nearly straight. Tegmina long, extending over apex of abdomen, with an oblique vein, mirror irregular; hind wings absence. Fore tibiae with an ovoid external tympanum, without internal tympanum; hind tibiae with 3 external dorsal spines and 4 internal dorsal spines, apex with 6 spurs. Subgenital plate trapezoidal, posterior margin truncated and slightly emarginated in middle. This paper describes four new species of the superfamily Grylloidea from Yunnan, China, including a new species of Gryllidae: Tarbinskiellus sororius Wang, Zhang & Liu sp. nov.; a new species of Mogoplistidae: Ornebius yunnanensis Wang, Zhang & Liu sp. nov.; two new species of Trigonidiidae: Homonemobius curifolis Zhang, Wang & Liu sp. nov. and Pteronemobius (Pteronemobius) truncates Zhang, Wang & Liu sp. nov. 11. Pteronemobius lineolatus (Brull��, 1835) A former record of this species from Sinj (Rebrina et al. 2015) was based on a misidentification of P. heydenii. Since P. lineolatus is distributed only in the western part of the Mediterranean (Hochkirch et al. 2016), the historical record from Cres Isl. (Schuster et al. 1998) is probably also a misidentification. O objetivo foi analisar a fauna de grilídeos, sua relação com diferentes composições vegetais, o nível de serapilheira e os efeitos da sazonalidade. Foram realizadas quatro coletas, nas quatro estações do ano, entre abril de 2008 e março de 2009. Foram coletados 503 grilídeos com armadilhas de solo, em oito pontos de coleta. Os insetos coletados foram identificados os seguintes gêneros Anurogryllus, Anurogryllus, Argizala, Hygronemobius, Nemobius, Odontogryllus e Pteronemobius. Os grilídeos não possuem afinidade com solos descampados, diminuindo consideravelmente no local mais impactado. O nível de serapilheira não interferiu na abundância e as mudanças sazonais mostraram importância na variação populacional, entretanto, a diversidade e dominância mostraram-se fiéis às alterações ambientais mesmo em menores valores de abundância. Esses resultados mostram que os grilídeos podem ser indicadores ambientais, pois respondem às modificações do meio. Composition and Diversity of the Crickets Fauna (Orthoptera: Grylloidea) in a Fragment of Atlantic Rain Forest in the Rio de Janeiro State Abstract. This study aimed to analyze the fauna of cricket, its relation with different plant compositions, litter level and seasonality effects. Four collections were performed, in four season of the year, between April 2008 and March 2009. It was collected 503 crickets using soil traps, in eight sampling points. The insects collected were identified as the genera Anurogryllus, Argizala, Hygronemobius, Nemobius, Odontogryllus e Pteronemobius. The crickets have no affinity with uncovered soil, decreasing significantly in more impacted places. The litter level did not affect the abundance and the seasonal changes shown importance in the population variation, however, diversity and dominance showed fidelity to environmental changes even in lower abundance. These results show that crickets may be environmental indicators due to the answers the changes in environment.

A new nemobiine cricket from Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait (Pteronemobius krakatau n. sp.) and a new grylline from Clarion Island in the eastern Pacific (Gryllus alexanderi n. sp.) are illustrated and described.

Pteronemobius heydenii (Fischer, 1853) P. heydenii is a hygrophilous and thermophilous species inhabiting lowland, but not overshadowed, wetlands, fens, banks of streams, rivers, and pools (Koschuh & Zechner 2000; Bedjanič 2004). In the CR, P. heydenii has been hitherto found only twice in Moravia, near Lednice (Čejchan 1985) and near Bzenec (Koč��rek 2010). A recent finding of only one individual in Bzenec-Př��voz does not confirm an established population in this locality because that individual may represent a migrant. The locality and surrounding area where this individual was found have been carefully and repeatedly searched, but no other specimen of P. heydenii has been found. The band-legged ground cricket Pteronemobius nigrofasciatus shows a clear photoperiodic response at 25°C with respect to the control of the induction of embryonic diapause. When crickets were reared under a short-day (LD 12 ∶ 12) photoperiod and then transferred to a long-day (LD 16 ∶ 8) photoperiod upon adult emergence, the adults mainly laid nondiapause eggs. However, adults maintained continuously under short-day conditions laid dispause eggs. When compound eyes were bilaterally removed after adult emergence, the crickets mainly laid nondiapause eggs, irrespective of the photoperiod. Thus, the adults completely lost their sensitivity to photoperiod after bilateral removal of their compound eyes. Unilateral removal of the compound eye also affected the crickets under a short-day photoperiod, and the incidence of diapause eggs was intermediate between that laid by intact adults and that laid by adults after the bilateral removal of compound eyes. The incidence of diapause eggs in sham-operated crickets was not significantly different from that in intact crickets under both sets of photoperiodic conditions. These results show that P. nigrofasciatus perceives the photoperiod through its compound eyes.

The present study compared micromorphological differentiation of stridulatory apparatus between the functional right tegmen and non-functional left tegmen, analyzed under scanning electron microscope (SEM), among eight Gryllidae species. The results showed that the main differences were found on the length and shape of files and teeth. The length of stridulatory file and teeth number were lower on the left stridulatory apparatus than that on right stridulatory apparatus in all species. However, the ratio between the length of stridulatory teeth and the interval of stridulatory teeth was significantly higher on the left stridulatory apparatus than that on right stridulatory apparatus in Dianemobius fascipes , Polionemobius taprobanensis , Pteronemobius gifuensis , Teleogryllus occipitali s and Oecanthus longicauda . In addition, the length of stridulatory teeth was positively related to number of stridulatory teeth, however, the interval of stridulatory teeth was negatively related to the ratio between the length of stridulatory teeth and the interval of stridulatory teeth for left and right stridulatory apparatus. Our result illustrated that the length of left and right stridulatory file and teeth length could be an effective character to distinguish species. Left stridulatory apparatus was not entirely degraded than right stridulatory apparatus.

Four new species of the cricket subfamily Nemobiinae from China are described. They are Homonemobius nigrus sp. nov., Speonemobius sinensis sp. nov., Polionemobius annulicornis sp. nov. and Pteronemobius yunnanicus sp. nov. All type specimens are deposited in East China Normal University, Biology of History Museum (HSNU); Shanghai Entomological Museum (IEAS) and Shanghai Normal University (SHNUC).

4. Pteronemobius yunnanicus sp. nov. (Figs. 16���21) Material. Holotype 3, CHINA: Yunnan prov. Jinping county, Malutang reservoir, 2009. V. 28, Alt. 1850m, leg. Liu Xian-Wei, Wu Jie, Zhu Wei-Bing, Bi Wen-Xuan (IEAS); Paratypes 33, 3����, same data as Holotype (IEAS). Description. Male. Body small and pubescent. Head round. Frontal rostrum as wide as 1 st antennal joint. Pronotum transverse. Tympanum on the out side of the fore tibiae. Hind tibia with four pairs of dorsal spurs, first internal dorsal spur short and widely separated from the others (Fig. 19). The proximal internal spurs obviously short and last internal spur stout and curved. One oblique vein and mirror divided into several cells (Fig. 17). Wings absent. Genitalia of male as in Figs. 20���21. Female. Tegmen short with 4 veins on dorsal field and 3 veins on lateral field (Fig. 18). Hind tibiae with three internal dorsal spurs, the proximal spur normal. Ovipositor straight with teeth on the upper side at apex. Coloration. Body black. Tibia, cerci and tegmina yellow. Maxillary palpi with 4 th and 5 th joints white, others brown. Head with four yellow lines (Fig. 16). Anterior margin of pronotum yellow. Measurements. Pteronemobius lineolatus lebt in zwei natürlichen Auengebieten des Kantons Tessin, dem der Maggia und dem der Verzasca sowie ihren Mündungen in den Lago Maggiore. Aufgrund kürzlich entdeckter neuer Standorte entlang dieser beiden Flüsse wurde das regionale Verbreitungsgebiet dieser Art angepasst. Sie benötigt ausgedehnte Kies- und Steinbänke sowie Flächen mit feinkörnigem, sandigem oder schlammigem Material für die Eiablage. The escape reaction time (ERT) of the cricket Pteronemobius sp. from the heated box begins at 48 degrees and increases with temperature until 56 degrees C, beyond which there is no further increase. The ERT (2.2 +/- 1.39 s) from the hot box at 54 degrees C is used as a model for studying the analgesic effects of opiates. Results of the present paper show that the ERT did not change after injecting the insect in the abdominal haemocoel with 0.9% saline solution, but ERT increased when 0.32, 0.52 or 0.69 mg/g of morphine is injected in the same place. The maximum ERT increase is reached at 90 min after drug injection, and the drug effect disappears 3 h after the injection. At 90 min after drug injections, the dose of 0.50 mg/g of morphine produces 50% of ERT increase, and it is referred to as the median analgesic dose (D50). 1.05 mg/g of morphine produces an ERT longer than 30 s that results in an irreversible damage to the insect. Sixty-four micrograms/g of naloxone given in addition to D50 of morphine fully blocked the effect of morphine during its 3-h action. However, more than 64 micrograms/g of naloxone alone also increase the ERT in the cricket, similar to what has been described for vertebrates. Four daily morphine injections of D50 decreased ERT in such a way that, at the fourth day, the ERT is similar to the ERT produced by saline solution; i.e., tolerance is shown. The suppression of daily morphine injections of D50 during the fifth day produced a hyperresponse to vibration (big jumps) not shown in the case of the injections of saline solution; i.e., addiction is shown.

We describe one new species of Hygronemobius, two new species of Pteronemobius from the highlands of Santa Cruz and San Cristobal and a new genus and species of Trigonidiinae. The new Hygronemobius daphne and the new Trigonidiine, Jarmilaxipha ecuadorica n. gen., n. sp. are believed to have been introduced into Galapagos (from an unknown source) within the last 20 years. We provide songs for all species

Desutter (1990), on her study of Neotropical crickets, recognized three groups of Nemobiinae in that region "Pteronemobius", Araizala (both bearing glandular supero-internal spuron male hindtibia), and Hygronemobius (with nonglandular spur). See Desutter (1990) for the other characters of these groups and her comments on material from the mountains of Colombia. As to the exact position of the Nemobiinae, traditionally it has been placed under the family Gryllidae, but Gorochov (1986) and Desutter (1987,1990) agree that it should be combined with the Trigonidiinae to form a single group (family Trigonidiidae). In the present paper we describe two new South American genera of nemobiines: Amanayara, with two species from the coastal forests of southeastern Brazil, in which the supero-internal spur of male hindtibia is glandular; and Monopteropsis, with two species from the mountains of Magdalena, Colombia, in which that spur is not glandular. The numbers indicating the portions of the phallic complex in figures 1 and 5 refer to the following structures: 1, epiphallic sclerite; 2, median lobe of epiphallus; 3, ectophallic fold; 4, ectophallic apodeme; 5, endophallic sclerite; 6, rami. Terminology follows Desutter (1990). AMANAYARA gen. n.

Summary The descriptions of three new species of cephaline gregarines (Protozoa: Sporozca) of the genus Gregarina Dufour, 1828, obtained from Indian gryllids are given in the paper. These are: 1) G. gryllodesii n. sp. from, Gryllodes sp. (LP: TL = 1 : 5.7; WP: WD = 1 : 1); 2) G. guttiventra n. sp. from Plebeogryllus guttiventris Walker (LP: TL = 1 : 3.8; WP: WD = 1:1.3); and 3) G. levinii n. sp. from Pteronemobius fascipense Walker (LP: TL = 1 : 4.8; WP: WD = 1 : 1.2). A comparison has been made of the presently described species of Gregarina with those described earlier from. the gryllid hosts to establish their distinctiveness.

A “T experiment” of the Nanda-Hamner type demonstrated the involvement of circadian oscillation in photoperiodic regulation of nymphal developmental rate in Pteronemobius fascipes . On the other hand, the involvement of circadian oscillation was much less clear with adult wing-form determination, even though both the phenomena are photoperiodically controlled in T24 with the same sensitive stage, i.e, the nymph. A resonance effect seems to be the most plausible mode of participation of circadian oscillation in the control of nymphal developmental rate.

Acoustical communication was studied in Pteronemobius nigrovus Swan, 1972 and P. bigelowi Swan, 1972. The sound‐producing apparatus and physical structure of the sounds are described for male crickets of both species, and the extent of their inter‐ and intraspecific variation is examined. The effects of some environmental and behavioural factors on sound production are also examined. Findings are discussed in relation to present knowledge of sound reception in Orthoptera and the nature of acoustical communication in the species studied.

Chromosome counts are given and colour variation is described in the field crickets Pteronemobius nigrovus Swan, 1972, and P. bigelowi Swan, 1972. Evolutionary relationships of these species and the need for revision of the Australasian Nemobiinae are discussed.

The basal swellings on the processes of the cone cells of Pteronemobius include conspicuous “bodies” consisting of a double unit membrane as well as of many granules (β-glycogen?). These membranes are infoldings of the cell membrane.

A new genus, Dianemobius, is diagnosed, with Eneoptera fascipes Walker, 1869, as type-species, since this species is not congeneric with Pteronemobius concolor (Walker), the type-species (a senior synonym of the originally designated Nemobius tartarus Saussure) of Pteronemobius. Notes on morphology and cytology which indicate the heterogeneity of Pteronemobius are included.

By varying the time difference between capture and release, we can show that swimming crickets Pteronemobius lineolatus are able to time compensate for the apparent azimuthal change of the sun's position.

Pteronemobius lineolatus swims landward visually guided by terrestrial and, at times, associated celestial cues. Crickets irrespective of their previous visual experience swim towards artificial black horizontal landmarks. Non shore-dwelling crickets select random directions when released, under blue sky, for the first time on water surface in the absence of landmarks. If old enough to swim larvae and adult crickets learn a compass direction, during their first swim and each new directional landward swimming, if there are conspicuous terrestrial landmarks. There is forgetting and relearning of celestial compass orientation.
