This case study aims to report on the psychological assessment and intervention for a 4-year-old preschooler with selective mutism. A comprehensive assessment that involves parents and teacher interview, classroom observation, Seguin Form Board Test (SFBT), Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales Third Edition (Vineland-3), Behaviour Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3), Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition Standard Version Rating Booklet (CARS 2-ST), and School Speech Questionnaire were conducted. The psychological assessment revealed that the child fulfils the criteria for selective mutism. Play-based intervention sessions were then conducted, which involved gradual exposure to the child's teacher and peers and facilitation of verbalization related to child's interests and classroom routines. The child demonstrated improvement in her frequency of verbalizing in the classroom following the intervention, as supported by the improved score in the School Speech Questionnaire (SSQ). This case study illustrates the advantages of a collaborative approach that engages parents, teachers, and peers in the management of selective mutism during early childhood.

Objective: This study examined the impact of State and Trait anxiety and dietary intake on college students' gastrointestinal symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants: A total of 455 students, aged 18-23, from two residential colleges in the midwestern United States participated in the study during April 2021. Methods: An online questionnaire that included the National Cancer Institute Dietary Screener, State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety, and an adapted version of the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaire was used. Stepwise multiple regression analyses and Spearman rho correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: High rates of State-somatic, State-cognitive, and Trait-somatic anxiety were present in our study population. These anxiety subscales and dietary intake predicted 26% and 3.8% of the GI symptoms variance, respectively. Conclusion: State-anxiety and Trait-somatic anxiety are large factors in predicting GI symptoms compared to dietary intake. College students could seek anxiety-reducing techniques to ease GI symptoms.

A limited number of findings from empirical studies show that biracial adolescents are at a heightened risk of peer victimization. Black/White biracial adolescents are frequent targets of peer victimization due to racism and systematic oppression that are inherent in U.S. schools. Similar to adolescents of other racial and ethnic groups, biracial adolescents who are victimized by their peers are likely to exhibit psychosocial and behavioral issues. However, little is known about protective factors that might buffer the link between peer victimization and adverse outcomes of these youth. The study examines whether perceived ease of talking with parents and siblings moderates the association between peer victimization and psychosocial problems among Black/White biracial early adolescents. Data were derived from the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study. Participants were 158 early adolescents, ages 10-14, who self-reported as both Black and White. Adolescents who perceived their fathers as easy to talk to were less likely to bully others or carry a weapon when victimized by their peers. Adolescents who perceived their mothers to be easy to talk to were less likely to carry a weapon. There were also lower rates of psychosomatic symptoms for youth who reported perceived ease talking with siblings.

Gastrointestinal symptoms and their relation to physical and mental aspects in adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are poorly understood, despite their high prevalence. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine psychological, behavioural and biological factors associated with gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with ASD (traits). We included 31,185 adults from the Lifelines Study. Using multivariable logistic regression, we analysed the association between gastrointestinal symptoms and psychological, behavioural (questionnaire-assessed) and physically measured biological factors in adults with ASD (n = 309), without ASD (n = 30,876), and in the quartiles with highest (n = 7783) and lowest (n = 7783) Autism Spectrum Quotient-10 sum scores. In the ASD-group, gastrointestinal symptoms were associated with psychiatric comorbidity (odds ratio: 2.71, 95% confidence interval: 1.51-4.85), more stress (odds ratio: 1.15, 95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.26), and worse perceived health (odds ratio: 2.32, 95% confidence interval: 1.62-3.34). In the quartile with the highest Autism Spectrum Quotient-10 sum scores, gastrointestinal symptoms were also associated with these psychological factors, and with less physical activity (odds ratio: 0.95, 95% confidence interval: 0.92-0.98). Our study demonstrates that not only adults with ASD but also adults with autistic traits are at increased risk for gastrointestinal symptoms, which is associated with psychological and behavioural factors. This suggests that an integrated psychosomatic approach of gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with ASD (traits) is needed.

The present study addressed the different contributors to social anxiety in children with Selective Mutism (SM), with and without co-occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (SM + ASD). Seventy-five parents completed an online composite questionnaire consisting of the symptoms of SM and ASD, anxiety and sensory measures. The results found the SM + ASD group showed significantly higher levels of social anxiety and sensory avoidance compared to the SM only group. However, a simple mediation model revealed sensory avoidance to be a mediator of this relationship between the diagnosis and social anxiety. Therefore, higher levels of sensory avoidance may help to differentiate social anxiety between the groups and may also be a sign of ASD in children with SM who have and/or are yet to receive an ASD diagnosis.

Autistic people experience heightened rates of physical health problems but may also experience elevated levels of somatic symptoms (e.g. pain, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms) due to psychological factors which are common in autism. This online study sought to compare rates of somatic symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-15) in older adolescents and adults who were autistic (n = 51), non-autistic (n = 119) and who suspected they were autistic (n = 32), while controlling for health conditions. We investigated psychological risk factors that may predispose individuals to experience somatic symptoms, including alexithymia (General Alexithymia Factor Score), interoception (Body Awareness Questionnaire) and intolerance of uncertainty (Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale). Diagnosed autistic individuals had higher rates of alexithymia and intolerance of uncertainty. We also found higher somatic symptoms in diagnosed autistic individuals, controlling for mental and physical health. However, hierarchical regression showed that somatic symptoms were predicted by physical and mental health conditions, female gender, alexithymia, and intolerance of uncertainty, regardless of autism status. The results suggest that autistic and non-autistic individuals experience more bodily discomfort in part due to gender, physical and mental health, alexithymia, and difficulty tolerating uncertainty. Implications for mental and physical health care in autism are discussed.

Workplace bullying is a known issue in society, and is most prevalent in education. Nevertheless, teacher-on-teacher bullying is a taboo topic of discussion. Bullying is repeated acts or verbal comments made to the victim as a way of controlling and demonstrating power over the individual. These acts could cause a multitude of psychological or physical effects on the victim. Taking care of oneself mentally and physically is imperative. Exploring a holistic approach to healing helps the victim to heal emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Selective mutism is a disorder that can negatively impact a student's learning. It can be treated effectively if it is understood as an anxiety related condition and if it is diagnosed early. Intervention strategies can be complex and are therefore difficult for educational practitioners to implement. Simplifying intervention by addressing the anxiety of the child and then moving to video self-monitoring, fading, contingency management, and cognitive behavioural therapy can make treatment more practical. By using these select methods, educators will have an easier time addressing a difficult problem, and children will benefit substantially.

As in other organizations, there is ostracism also in educational organizations. Apart from the individual consequences of being ostracized, there are also undesirable organizational consequences. Considering the potential of educational organizations to transform individuals, the effect of ostracism on teachers becomes particularly important. The purpose of the study was to examine the reasons for and results of the ostracism that teachers face at schools by the school principals, and the recommendations for solutions to prevent ostracism. The study group of the study, which was structured with the phenomenology design, consisted of 12 elementary and middle primary school teachers who had personal experience with ostracism. The data collected through interviews were analyzed with content analysis. The study revealed that teachers were exposed to ostracism for political, social and/or individual reasons. Ostracized teachers experienced psychological and organizational problems. The teachers stated that preventing ostracism in schools would be possible with a more democratic and fairer organizational culture.

Background: Cluttering is a fluency disorder characterized by an abnormally fast or irregular speech delivery rate along with disfluencies that are frequent but are not judged to be stuttering. Data on cluttering prevalence in the general population are scarce, as well as its association with psychological well-being indices, such as anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Aims: To estimate cluttering prevalence among undergraduates, as well as its relationship with psychological and well-being indicators. Methods & Procedures: To address these issues, a large sample (n = 1582) of undergraduates completed a questionnaire that provided a lay definition of cluttering and were asked to identify themselves as clutterers (SI-Clut), as well as to indicate the presence of several psychological and mental well-being indices. Outcomes & Results: A total of 276 respondents (23%) self-identified as clutterers (now or in the past), with 55.1% of those being male. Only 56 respondents (3.5% of the total sample; about 21% of SI-Clut) reported having received speech therapy for cluttering. Relative to students self-identifying as non-clutterers, self-identification of cluttering was associated with higher levels of psychosomatic symptoms, depressive symptoms and stress, indicating a tendency toward internalizing psychopathology, along with lower self-esteem, and lower subjective happiness. Conclusions & Implications: The current findings point to the high prevalence of students self-identifying as clutterers, along with a significant link between cluttering and mental distress. Therefore, it is important to increase public awareness of cluttering, its diagnosis and treatment. From the clinical perspective, the elevated levels of somatic complaints, anxiety and depression may represent internalizing psychopathology, associated with more covert rather than overt symptomatology. Such symptom manifestation calls for special attention from the speech-language pathologists providing cluttering therapy, using designated well-being or mental health screening tools. Although data on standard cluttering treatment are limited, it should be customized to the client's unique difficulties. Speech-language pathologists' understanding of cluttering, which includes both speech characteristics as well as psychological and social aspects of well-being, may assist them in implementing effective treatments.

Academic performance among university students is a fundamental factor in the analysis of quality of higher education. Despite the large volume of research on academic performance, there are no conclusive results regarding the influence of some variables on it. While some studies find differences attributable to gender, age, or psychological factors, such as coping strategies, others conclude that they are inexistent or insignificant. This article seeks to deepen about how these variables influence the academic performance of trainee primary-school teachers. Educational improvements in a society are only possible if teacher training guarantees a high qualification of its teachers. In this article we analyze academic progress in a sample of 136 students and the effect of gender, age and coping strategies and psychological symptoms. From the data analysis it can be concluded that all the analyzed variables cause differences in academic performance in teacher students. Therefore, it will be necessary to establish improvement plans for this degree that meet these conditions.

Schools are expected to hold an increasingly central role in co-ordinating support for children with mental health needs. However, the role that schools hold in supporting pupils with selective mutism (SM) is complex. Through a Critical Interpretive Synthesis (CIS), this review explores the multidimensional role which educational settings hold in supporting children with SM. Key databases were searched (PsycInfo, British Education Index, Education Resources Information Center, British Library EThOS and Google Scholar) and a conceptual map, informed by experienced practitioners, guided additional purposive searching with a focus on conceptual saturation. A total of twenty-four papers were identified following a further process of appraisal. Reciprocal Translational Analysis (RTA) found that schools hold a tripartite role in supporting children with SM: this incorporated developing a shared understanding of the disorder, engaging in effective (and often multi-professional) planning, and offering direct support through adapting provision and facilitating individual intervention. Through realising this role, schools and educational settings might transform the support currently available for children and young people with SM. Implications for practice, policy and future research also emerged. This included a clear need for enhanced teacher understanding of SM, arguably at the level of initial teacher training (ITT).

The aim of this research is to examine the relationships between mobbing and psychological symptoms in teachers and determine the impact of mobbing levels on psychological symptom levels. The study was carried out with 185 teachers in total -- 116 female and 69 male -- working in Burdur Province. Research data was collected using mobbing scale for teachers and Symptom Check List. In data analysis, Mann Whitney U test was conducted to determine whether gender and marital status vary according to mobbing and psychological symptoms. In addition, correlation analysis was conducted between mobbing and psychological symptoms and the model established for the relationship was tested with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). In the analyses, it was determined that there is significant difference only on psychological symptom levels of teachers according to their genders. Relationships were identified between prevention of teachers' professional applications and situations such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, anger and hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid thoughts, psychoticism, sleep, appetite and guilt. Furthermore, it was determined that there is a low-level positive significant relationship between mobbing and psychological symptom levels of teachers and mobbing levels have direct high-level impact on psychological symptom levels.

This small-scale research project explored the perceived impact which selective mutism (SM) training, delivered by an educational psychologist (EP), had on school practitioners' understanding of the condition and their subsequent professional practice. Three teachers were interviewed and a thematic analysis elicited four superordinate themes. Participants recognised that they had little previous knowledge of SM and many misconceptions; they also identified key ways in which their understanding of SM, and their practice as school professionals, had developed. In addition, staff highlighted central challenges which nevertheless remained, one of which involved working with parents. This research highlights the limited knowledge which teachers have of SM, whilst demonstrating how staff training and school development might contribute to improved outcomes for children with the condition. Implications for teacher training programmes and future research are considered.

The current study is a two-year case study focusing on an upper-elementary girl who had been diagnosed with selective mutism in 1st grade. While multiple theoretical frameworks have been used to explain selective mutism, the current study borrowed the frameworks of critical sociocultural theory, a social semiotic theory of multimodality, and self-efficacy theory. The data consisted of daily field notes written by the researcher, video and audio recordings, artifacts of schoolwork and student written communication. The researcher served as Tina's learning specialist in Year 1 and her homeroom teacher in Year 2 during the data collection period. Those data sources were used to explain the evolution of new insights, identities, and pedagogical practices designed to support Tina in the school setting. The findings showed that being attentive and observant, establishing a safe learning environment, and cultivating a strong teacher-student relationship were critical to student success. In addition, the role of writing as a communication tool and use of digital tools supported Tina's growth. In conclusion, implications for teacher development will be discussed.

Using the UK as an example, students attending higher education providers (HEPs) increasingly suffer mental ill-health due to new stress factors. Relationships between stress, frequently co-occurring chronic medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) and mental health are explored as the basis for proposing The BodyMind Approach® (TBMA) as an innovative intervention, addressing the body and mind experience of MUS. Excessive stress can lead to/exacerbate, mental health difficulties and/or MUS (such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue/pain for which tests and scans are normal). MUS mostly affects women, non-native speakers and young people, all high numbers at HEPs. Students resist mental health services, and half in need do not disclose or seek help. TBMA, as an evidence-based, research-informed intervention, tested in the health service, is more accessible when framed as learning to self-manage symptom distress. Policymakers might consider this intervention to help improve student mental health as part of an institution-wide approach.

The aim of this study is to assess adolescent refugees' psychological distress and examine how reliably caseworkers can assess distress through a proxy-report instrument. The distress of 102 unaccompanied refugees between 16 and 21 years of age housed in youth welfare accommodations in Germany was assessed by self-report using the Brief Symptom Checklist and by proxy-report through the Child Behavior Checklist. Independent of residence status, the self and proxy ratings reveal that more than half of the refugees suffer from increased levels of psychological distress, particularly from anxiety and somatisation. There was a moderate positive correlation between the total scales of the two instruments. The high number of clinically meaningful distress poses a great challenge to caseworkers in facilities for unaccompanied refugees. The Child Behavior Checklist can be a suitable measure to detect clinically meaningful problems, but its validity seems to depend on a good relationship between caseworker and refugee.

Purpose: School principals are generally seen as key facilitators for the delivery and long-term implementation of activities on school health promotion, including health literacy. However, there is little evidence on the health literacy and health status of this occupational group. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the health literacy of school principals and its association with mental health indicators. Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional online survey with German school principals and members of the management board (vice principals) was conducted (n = 680, 68.3% female). Demographic (gender, age) and work characteristics (type of school, professional role) as well as health literacy served as independent variables. Mental health as a dependent variable included well-being, emotional exhaustion and psychosomatic complaints. Next to uni- and bivariate analysis, a series of binary logistic regression models was performed. Findings: Of the respondents, 29.2% showed a limited health literacy with significant differences to the disadvantage of male principals. With regard to mental health, respondents aged over 60 years and those from schools for children with special educational needs were less often affected by low well-being as well as frequent emotional exhaustion and psychosomatic complaints. Taking into account demographic and work characteristics, regression models revealed significant associations between a low level of health literacy and poor mental health across all indicators. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional nature of this study does not allow to draw conclusions about the causal pathways between health literacy and mental health. Although the sample has been weighted, the results cannot be generalized to the whole population of school principals. There is a need for evidence-based interventions aiming at promoting health literacy and mental health tailored to the needs of school principals. Originality/value: This is the first study to investigate health literacy and its association with health indicators among school principals.

Morita therapy, developed by Shoma Morita (1874-1938) in Japan, is a type of psychotherapy that has been applied to deal with neurotic symptoms. This therapeutic approach is based on the conviction that neurotic symptoms are universal issues that eventually subside if the symptoms are accepted and everyday activities are carried out. By examining a school-refusing female adolescent suffering from somatic complaints (mainly psychogenic fever), the present study explores the effectiveness of Morita therapy-based consultation on the adolescent's school refusal tendencies. The findings indicate that, after the school counselor provided Morita therapy-based consultation to the parents of the school-refusing adolescent and the school staff members, the adolescent returned to school and psychogenic fever became afebrile after several days of resuming regular school attendance. The implication of the results is that Morita therapy can be effective for dealing with school-refusing adolescents suffering from neurotic symptoms.

It has been reported that during chemotherapy treatment, some patients can experience nausea before pharmacological administration, suggesting that contextual stimuli are associated with the nauseating effects. There are attempts to reproduce with animal models the conditions under which this phenomenon is observed to provide a useful paradigm for studying contextual aversion learning and the brain structures involved. This manuscript assessed the hippocampus involvement in acquiring and maintaining long-term conditioned place avoidance (CPA) induced by a gastric malaise-inducing agent, LiCl. Our results demonstrate that a reliable induction of CPA is possible after one acquisition trial. However, CPA establishment requires a 20-min confinement in the compartment associated with LiCl administration. Interestingly, both hippocampal regions seem to be necessary for CPA establishment; nonetheless, inactivation of the ventral hippocampus results in a reversion of avoidance and turns it into preference. Moreover, we demonstrate that activation of dorsal/ventral hippocampal NMDA receptors after CS-US association is required for long-term CPA memory maintenance.

Medical education is highly demanding and evidence shows that medical students are three times more susceptible to deteriorating physical and mental health than the average college student. While trait anxiety may further increase such risk, little is known about the role of trait mindfulness in mitigating these effects. Here we examine the protective role of specific mindfulness facets as mediators in pathways from trait anxiety to perceived stress, psychosomatic burden and sleep-wake quality in medical students, across repeated measurements throughout the first trimester of the school year. Preclinical medical students enrolled in the second year of the Medical School of University of Bologna completed self-report questionnaires examining personality traits as well as physical and psychological wellbeing. Data were collected at the beginning (Time 1: N = 349) and the end of the first trimester (Time 2: N = 305). As students approached the end of the trimester and upcoming exams, reported levels of perceived stress, psychosomatic problems and difficulties in wakefulness increased significantly compared to the beginning of the trimester. Mediation results showed that trait anxiety predicted such outcomes whereas the protective role of mindfulness facets in mitigating these effects was significant only at Time 2. Specific facets of Nonjudging of inner experience and Acting with awareness proved to be the most effective mediators. Findings highlight that the beneficial role of mindfulness facets in mitigating negative consequences of trait anxiety on medical student wellbeing is revealed in high-pressure periods and when self-regulation is needed the most. Cultivating awareness and nonjudgmental acceptance of one's inner experiences is a crucial self-regulation resource that can help medical students sustain their wellbeing as they learn and throughout their high-pressure education and professional careers.

We tested if Latinx and Black individuals are more likely to somaticize depression compared with their White counterparts. We analyzed 14,745 depression ratings from 4,101 people living with HIV from 2007 to 2014. We calculated the percentage of each depression score accounted for by somatic symptom items (e.g., feeling tired). We analyzed depression scores using generalized estimation equations, which accounts for repeated measures within each person. Somatic symptoms accounted for 70% of depression scores for White patients, 66% for Latinx patients, and 68% for Black patients. Across the 14,745 assessments, adjusting for age and sex, and within-person correlation, the percentage of the depression scores made up of somatic items was lower for Latinx (b = -0.03, p < 0.0001) and Black patients (b = -0.02, p < 0.001), compared with White patients. The idea that Latinx and Black individuals are likely to somaticize depression may lead to underdiagnoses and perpetuate stereotypes and inequities that are not supported by empirical data.

Classroom teachers play a pivotal role in the early identification and treatment of students with selective mutism. In order to successfully identify students and to collaborate effectively with a professional team, classroom teachers must educate themselves on the intricacies of this anxiety-based disorder. Students with selective mutism remain unidentified when classroom teachers are unaware of the presenting symptoms, available treatments, and proactive classroom-based interventions. In fact, without an adequate understanding of selective mutism, teachers could unknowingly be supporting mutism behaviours in the classroom. Teachers can be the first to connect students and their families with necessary support; but only if they are aware of the complexities of selective mutism.

The purpose of this research, which was carried out for the first time in Greece, is to focus on the early detection of preschool children's "internalizing problems," according to their teachers' perceptions. The participants, 77 preschool teachers of 77 half-day and all-day preschool classes from the thirteen regions of Greece, completed: (a) the "Caregiver-Teacher Report Form (C-TRF) for ages 1½-5" of Achenbach (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2009) and (b) the "Demographic Questionnaire" (Doni, 2015), considering 1.234 mixed gender (617 boys and 617 girls) children 4-6 years of age. According to the results, preschool teachers detected "internalizing problems" in 10.4% of the children, of whom 6.9% was included in the clinical range, while 3.5% was included in the borderline range. The highest rate, 10.9% of the children, was included in either clinical or borderline range for "withdrawal" syndrome. Boys had higher rates of "internalizing problems" than girls. Moreover in all-day preschools, preschool teachers detected more cases of children with "emotional reactivity." These findings could be useful in future studies specialized on children's social and emotional functioning, in a future revision of universities curricula associated with early childhood education, as well as in preschool teachers' training programs, by including modules related to the accurate and early detection and treatment of "internalizing problems" experienced by preschoolers.

Deficit in working memory is common among young children across multiple abilities. Teachers have pointed to poor memory as one contributing factor to inattentiveness and short attention spans as well as some behavioural problems among students. This study aimed to explore the relationship among working memory, externalizing and internalizing behavioural problems and Malay language (writing). A total of 469 children (aged 8 and 11 year-old) and 17 school teachers were involved in the current study. It was found that working memory, externalizing behavioural problems and internalizing behavioural problems played critical roles in affecting the scores of Malay language (writing) at school. Specifically, there were five predictor variables being found in the regression model namely verbal short-term memory, inattention, somatic complaints, visuospatial working memory and aggression. As a whole, the correlation for the fivefactor model yielded a great result of 0.987.

Selective mutism (SM) is typically identified in early childhood and is characterised by a lack of speech in specific social situations, usually at school. This study interviewed 11 teachers and used qualitative methods to develop an explanatory framework to represent the lived experience of teaching pupils with SM. Interviews were analysed using grounded theory methods. The final theoretical framework captured nine categories. This included five key processes: "categorisation" of teacher beliefs; the development and change in beliefs through a process of "scientific enquiry"; teacher efforts to "support" pupils; measuring and "monitoring" pupil progress; management of teacher "emotional responses," and four contextual factors; "pupil characteristics," "peer relationships," "teacher self-identity" and "staff relationships." The findings highlighted a link between teacher categorisation of SM and pupil support. Implications of the framework for guiding research and educator practice to support pupils with SM are discussed.

Research has linked parenting practices to the development of internalising symptoms in children. However, parenting practices cannot fully explain the evolution of internalising symptoms, as other factors seem to influence this process. Two specific factors identified in separate lines of research are victimisation and child behavioural inhibition. The current study examined moderated-mediation models to investigate the respective effects of victimisation and behavioural inhibition on the relationship between parenting practices and internalising symptoms. The study included 374 children and their parents. The children completed the Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire, the Behavioural Inhibition Instrument, and the Parental Bonding Instrument. Their parents completed the Child Behaviour Checklist. The study results highlighted that behavioural inhibition moderates the mediating effect of victimisation on the relationship between parenting practices and internalising symptoms. The study findings contribute to the existing literature and advance our understanding of children's internalising symptoms development.

A growing body of literature has documented the negative outcomes associated with worry. To extend this line of research, we examined why some bereaved college students with the tendency to worry experience intense grief by focusing on psychosomatic symptoms that follow a wave of emotions episode. The results demonstrated that tonic immobility is not only responsible for grief outcomes beyond somatisation, but it also explains some of the bereaved worriers' grief-related pain and dysfunction. Clinical implications and limitations of these results are discussed.

The study is based on two waves of longitudinal data at ages 13 and 16 aimed to examine factors that explain psychosomatic and depressive symptoms at the age of 16. The sample is nationally representative involving 9000 individuals from the Swedish longitudinal Evaluation Through Follow up database born in 1998. A growth modeling approach was applied to examine relations between factors over time. Girls were found to have considerably higher self-reported levels of mental health problems in grade 9 than boys. The gender difference was partially mediated by girls' higher level of stress and worry in grade 6 and larger increases in stress, worry and academic demands from grade 6 to 9. The larger increases in girls' feelings of peer exclusion were associated with the self-reported mental illness measures. Students with high cognitive ability experienced increased worry and stress in grade 9 with associated mental health problems.

This study with 198 urban Chinese adolescents (M age = 16.0, SD = 1.46) and their parents investigated the impact of parental control over personal issues in the context of everyday conflicts and adolescent self-reports of internalizing disorders as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Adolescents and parents completed the Parental Authority Index (PAI) assessing perceptions of parental control over personal, prudential-conventional, and overlapping issues. Adolescents recorded daily conflicts with parents over 2 weeks on private blogs through an online platform. Significant relationships were found between adolescent BSI scores for internalizing disorders (anxiety, somatization, interpersonal sensitivity) and their scores on the PAI for perceptions of parental control over personal issues as well as actions that overlapped personal with conventional and prudential considerations. Blog data revealed that two thirds of these urban Chinese parent--adolescent conflicts were about regulation of adolescent daily activities and issues directly impacting adolescent personal choice. Adolescents considered the majority of these conflicts as personal issues, and those who reported perceiving a higher level of parental control over their personal issues had significantly more daily conflicts with their parents. In addition, significant associations were found between reported actual daily conflicts and adolescent internalizing disorders: The greater the intensity of conflicts as experienced by the adolescents, the higher adolescents scored on the BSI subscale for depression; the less fair adolescents rated the conflict resolution and the less positively they felt about the process that led to the outcome, the higher they scored on the BSI subscales for interpersonal sensitivity and depression.

Background: Refugee children might have experienced violent and traumatic events before settling into a new country. In the United Kingdom, the number of refugee children is increasing; however, little is known about their psycho-social and physical well-being. Aim: This study aims to investigate the psychological well-being and behaviour of refugee children compared to British-born children on a number of psychological, social, behavioural, and health-related issues and to investigate the role of friendship as a protective factor. Samples: This study utilized a sample of 149 refugee children recruited from two charities, 79 of which are children aged 6-10 years and 70 older refugee children aged 11-16 years. The study also included 120 non-refugee children recruited from primary schools aged 6-10 years. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that investigates the psycho-social well-being of refugee children compared to non-refugee British-born children. The study explored symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, emotional and behavioural problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), self-esteem, friendships and popularity, bullying and victimization, physical health, and psychosomatic problems. Results: Young refugee children reported more peer problems, functional impairment, physical health, and psychosomatic problems compared to the control children and older refugee children groups. On the other hand, older refugee children had lower self-esteem (academic and social self-peers) compared to the younger refugee children group. The differences between the groups were explained by friendship quality, number of friends, peer bullying/victimization, or sibling bullying/victimization except for physical health and psychosomatic problems.

There is little evidence on the association between child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) policies and adolescent mental health. This study examined this association using data on indicators of adolescent mental health--aggressive behavior, life satisfaction, and psychosomatic symptoms--in 172,829 eleven- to fifteen-year-olds from 30 European countries in the 2013-2014 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study. Individual records were linked to national-level policies for CAMH, controlling for national-level adult violence, adult well-being, and income inequality. Multilevel analyses revealed lower adolescent aggressive behavior in countries with more CAMH policies, even after controlling for other national-level indicators. Adolescent life satisfaction and psychosomatic symptoms were not associated with CAMH policies. Results may inform policy recommendations regarding investments in adolescent mental health.

In order to better understand protective factors for internalizing problems, this longitudinal study examined positive emotions, emotion awareness and (non-)emotional communication skills in relation to somatic complaints and social anxiety in children with (N = 104) and without (N = 183) Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) using self-reported measures twice with a 9-month interval. Additionally, parents reported on their child's communication problems and emotion communication at Time 1. Most importantly, since we found that increasing levels of emotion awareness related to decreases in social anxiety and somatic complaints in children with and without DLD, we conclude that children with DLD are likely to benefit from interventions aimed at improving their emotion awareness in addition to language interventions.

This article describes how adults learn to self-manage chronic bodily symptoms, a complex and costly health problem. It proposes a theory of learning for an innovative, research-informed intervention, The BodyMind Approach® (TBMA) aimed at developing confidence, competence, skills, and knowledge and understanding for self-management for people with medically unexplained symptoms. TBMA is interdisciplinary, combining embodiment and arts in health with transformative learning. Having explored the problem, the article presents TBMA and argues for how it cultivates the type of learning which sustains the self-management of symptoms. Promoting self-management fills the gap between patient needs and health service capacity. Previous studies identify learning through this method enables people to manage their symptoms when under stress in an ever-changing environment, supporting sufficient structure, agency, reflexivity, self-efficacy, and self-regulatory strategies to maintain resilience in the face of life adversity, despite their symptoms.

Objective: Low back pain (LBP) is a very common symptom. It occurs in all age groups from children to the elderly population. Globally, years lived with disability caused by LBP increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015. Our objective was to investigate measures that associate with LBP in students. Participants: A structured, anonymous, self-report questionnaire was distributed in two study years, 2009 and 2015. Participants included 1,026 students, 57.7% of them female, with a mean age of 27.2 (SD = 6.4). Methods: The questionnaire included validated questions on various subjects related to health status and health behaviors. Results: The associated factors of undergraduate students experiencing backaches are higher if they engage in smoking (AOR = 2.15; p<0.01), report study-based stress (AOR = 2.39; p<0.01), and show depressive symptoms (AOR = 2.69; p<0.000). Conclusions: Smoking, stress, and depression are strong measures associated with backache in undergraduate students, significantly more than BMI, physical activity, or sedentary behaviors.

Background: This study compared Bedouin mothers of adolescents with developmental disabilities (DD) and Bedouin mothers of typically developing adolescents using measures of social support, depression, and somatisation. It further examined whether social support and raising a child with DD would predict maternal depression and somatisation beyond demographic variables. Methods: Ninety-five Bedouin mothers of adolescents with and without a DD filled out self-report questionnaires. Results: Bedouin mothers raising a child with DD reported more depression and somatisation symptoms and less social support than their counterparts. Social support was negatively correlated with depression among Bedouin mothers of typical children, but not among mothers raising a child with DD. Furthermore, raising a child with DD significantly contributed to the prediction of depression and somatisation among Bedouin mothers. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Bedouin mothers raising a child with DD are at risk of experiencing mental-health issues, specifically depression and somatisation symptoms.

This case study was designed to measure the response of one student with blindness and selective mutism to the intervention of voice-output devices across two years and two different teachers in two instructional settings. Before the introduction of the voice output devices, the student did not choose to communicate using spoken language or gestures while at school. As a result of this intervention, the student consistently communicated her choice of a preferred activity, responded independently to social greetings, and more consistently expressed her wants and needs. She responded "yes" and "no" to questions and made significant gains in pre-reading skills.

Subclinical traits of autism were measured in children with somatic symptom disorder (SSD, n = 28) and compared with age-matched controls (n = 26) using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) children's version. The KINDL[superscript R] quality of life questionnaire was used to assess functional disability. Although there was no significant group difference in total traits of autism, SSD group had significantly greater difficulty in attention switching domain. Logistic regression analysis confirmed attention switching and age were associated with increased likelihood of SSD. In SSD group, difficulty in attention switching significantly negatively correlated with total, family, and friends quality of life scores. In conclusion, assessment and treatment targeting difficulties in attention switching could be useful when dealing with children with SSD.

Objective: Pain affects a significant proportion of college students in the United States and has been linked to anxiety and depressive symptoms. Rumination and worry, two transdiagnostic factors linked to comorbidity, may explain the relationship between pain and mental health symptoms. Current Study: The current study examined worry and rumination as explanatory factors in the relationship between pain and anxiety and depressive symptoms in a sample of college students with pain (n = 1,577; 79.9% female). Results: Results indicated that both rumination and worry explained the relationship between pain and depressive and social anxiety symptoms, while rumination alone explained the relationship between pain and anxious arousal symptoms. Conclusion: The current study provides novel empirical evidence that worry and rumination each help explain the relationship between pain and anxiety and depressive symptoms among college students with current pain, and college students in pain may benefit from targeted psychosocial strategies aimed at decreasing worry and ruminative responses.

Selective mutism is a relatively uncommon, yet significantly impairing anxiety disorder that causes difficulties in young children when communicating in social situations (such as school) even though they speak normally when they are comfortable (such as at home). Early childhood educators play a unique role in helping to identify selective mutism, given that symptoms often do not occur in the home environment. Parents are incumbent upon educators to bring non-communicative behavior to the parent's attention, and recognition of selective mutism by early childhood professionals can lead to a referral for appropriate intervention services. Unfortunately, research has indicated a problematic, lengthy lag-time to treatment for children with selective mutism (i.e., symptoms occurring on average 3 years before beginning treatment). Early recognition and treatment of selective mutism can have a profound effect on prognosis; therefore, it is important for educators to understand the difference between shy behavior and symptoms of selective mutism, where to find information regarding selective mutism, and aspects surrounding referral for intervention. This article includes brief descriptions of components of evidence-based treatment for selective mutism including contingency management, stimulus fading techniques, exposure-based practice, and audio/video self-modeling are provided to guide educators of early childhood. Finally, specific classroom strategies for the teacher to use, such as providing a warm classroom environment, using a hierarchy of communication and fixed-choice questions, increasing wait-time for questions, and using video recordings for communication, are reviewed. Use of these strategies will aid in supporting the child's treatment in the classroom environment, thus reducing the child's anxiety and increasing verbalizations.

Background: The clinical relevance of Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) is well established, as well as the association between parents' and children's AS. However, there is little data data on the indirect relation between parents' AS and children's anxiety and somatic-hypochondriac symptoms through children's AS, and the few findings available are inconsistent. Objective: The study examined, in a community sample, whether children's AS was associated to their anxiety and somatic-hypochondriac symptoms, and tested whether children's AS mediated the link between parents' AS and children's anxiety and somatic-hypochondriac symptoms. Methods: A total of 392 children and one of their parents completed a battery of questionnaires. Results: Children's AS mediated the links between parents' AS and children's anxiety and somatic-hypochondriac symptoms. These pathways were moderated by the child's age, in that they were significant for older children (ages 11-17 years old), but not for younger ones (ages 8-10 years old). Conclusions: The findings advance understanding of how parental AS might be implicated in children's AS and clinical symptoms.

The objective of this study is to analyze the rate of stressful life events and psychosomatic symptoms among students smokers and non-smokers and examine the predictive contribution of stress and smoking to subjective health status. Methods were conducted on a convenience sample of 200 students from the University of Mostar, with a median age of 21 (inter-quartile range, three). Exposure to stress was determined using the scale of stressful life events, which assesses social alienation, time pressure, academic failure, everyday social conflicts and academic maladjustment. Psychosomatic symptoms were explored by the questionnaire of psychosomatic symptoms, which assesses gastrointestinal, dermatological, musculoskeletal, pseudoneurological, cardiovascular, flu and cold symptoms. Students were divided into a group of smokers and non-smokers. A group of non-smokers consisted of 101 students who had never smoked, while group of smokers consisted of 99 students who smoke at least three cigarettes per day. The significant differences of results in stressful live events between smokers and non-smokers were obtained for the subscales of social alienation, academic failure and everyday social conflicts. Smokers differed from non-smokers in rate of gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular symptoms and the symptoms of flu and cold. Exposure to stressful life events and smoking were significant predictors of psychosomatic symptoms. The results showed that stressful life events related to academic failure and social relation were important variables in understanding the smoking. Subjective psychological and physical symptoms were most frequently prevalent in smokers compared to non-smokers. Exposure to stressful life events and smoking predicted difficulties in psychological subjective health status. (Contains 7 tables.)

Selective mutism is a rare anxiety disorder that prevents a child from speaking at school or other community settings, and can be detrimental to a child's social development. School psychologists can play an important role in the prevention and treatment of selective mutism. As an advocate for students, school psychologists can work with teachers, parent caregivers, speech pathologists, and other support staff toward helping children who may develop or have selective mutism. The purpose of this article is to present school-based prevention and intervention approaches within a three-tiered approach that may reduce the incidence and severity of selective mutism. We present theories and research on the etiology and prevalence of the disorder, followed by a review of intervention methods and research at each tier. Based on the theoretical and research literature base, we conclude that early intervention may result in the prevention and amelioration of many occurrences of selective mutism. (Contains 1 table.)

The purposes of this study were twofold: (1) to verify whether or not gender and interpersonal relationships influence the variance of psychosomatic symptoms in Taiwanese adolescents; and (2) to examine the moderating role of gender between interpersonal relationships and psychosomatic symptoms in Taiwanese adolescents. The present study adopted data from the Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS) using a stratified-random methodology. Results indicated that: (1) gender accounts for a significant amount of variance of psychosomatic symptoms; (2) interpersonal relationships account for a significant amount of variance in psychosomatic symptoms over and above gender; and (3) gender moderates the associations of mother-adolescent and teacher-student relationships and psychosomatic symptoms, whereas it does not moderate the associations between father-adolescent, sibling, or peer relationships or psychosomatic symptoms.

In this study, we examine autoethnographic data from three critical incidents as experienced by the first author demonstrating the importance of context in understanding medically unexplained symptoms, their incidence and underlying patterns. We make the case for ethnographies as a crucial research strand in discerning the finer aspects of the patient or client experience; aspects that might be missed where people are directed along protocolised pathways of care. The article describes care as fragmented and depersonalising, leading to disembodied exchanges, as reflected in other autoethnographic studies, particularly those that highlight the complex relationship and controversies surrounding diagnostic uncertainty. We observe that psychological therapists, given the quality of the therapeutic relationship and sustained attention to the person's experience, are well placed to assist in the necessary processes of re-contextualisation and re-embodiment.
