There is a long history of holistic responses to mental illness and suffering in many Christian traditions. In recent years, however, there has been growing controversy surrounding the response of the Evangelical Church to mental health. Adopting often literalist interpretations of scripture, these church communities may conflate mental illness exclusively with sin, demons, or diminished faith, thereby inadvertently promoting shaming and voluntaristic notions of psychological suffering. Other church communities, meanwhile, have perhaps over-secularized psychological illness, with neglect to the healing power of faith and community. This empirical paper seeks to contribute toward an open discussion of how the Evangelical Church can both respond to, and support, Christians with mental illness by being both faithful to theological witness and asserting that theological anthropologies must be reexamined from the site of lived experiences of mental illness. Qualitative responses from 309 UK-based evangelical Christians who have experienced some form of mental illness are, in this study, analyzed regarding their views on how the church can best support Christians with mental illness. A thematic analysis suggests that a relational and spiritually sensitive approach is advocated; one that moves beyond dichotomized accounts of psychological suffering as exclusively spiritual or biomedical and toward relational care and valuing of the other. Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is still considered an evolving practice in Canada. Practitioners are facing the challenge of staying up to date and hence need efficient continuing medical education (CME). A patient-partner has been recently invited as a keynote speaker to CME activities in Canada to share her perspectives and views about patient engagement in palliative care and MAiD practice, calling for compassion. To our knowledge, few data exist on patient-partners' contribution to CME on these topics. Based on that experience, we discuss different issues on patient engagement's contribution in such CME events and call for further research.

In the present investigation, we used structural equation modeling with 251 adolescents to reveal, through path analyses, the degree to which somatization might mediate the relationships between body image and self-harming behaviors. After controlling for the effects of (a) age, (b) gender, and (c) having previously visited a psychologist, we observed that somatization fully mediated both the relationship between body image and self-harming behaviors and the relationship between gender and self-harming behaviors. These results suggest that having a less satisfied relationship with the body or a more negative body image is closely related to a somatic experience of greater psychological suffering, which could lead, in turn, to a more active expression of this suffering through self-harming behaviors. In recent years we have seen a growing psychological suffering in women attended in primary health care in developing countries. This paper aims to analyze psychological suffering in a small city in northeastern Brazil and its relationship with medicalization. We applied 202 SRQ-20 questionnaires in 3 Basic Health Units in the first research step, which were analyzed with statistical support. In the second step, four women were interviewed in the primary health care service and the data were analyzed from Institutional Ethnography perspective. The results demonstrated a high number of primary health care users in psychological suffering (47.02%). The data also points to a significant prevalence of women in psychological suffering, the use of medicines and the struggles in dealing with the difficulties of everyday life. The medicalization of psychological suffering appeared several times in this study through the invisibility of these sufferings under the blanket of biomedical and medicalizing discourse. Those facts can affect contemporary women and the contradictions of being a woman in a capitalist and patriarchal society.

Estado de malestar [ “State of distress” ] (2019) by María Ruido takes as its starting point a series of texts by Mark Fisher, Franco Berardi “Bifo” and Santiago López Petit, as well as conversations with philosophers, psychiatrists and patients or diagnosed people, notably with the activist collective InsPiradas, in Madrid, in order to present itself as a visual essay about the social symptomatology and psychic suffering in the age of capitalist realism, about the pain that our life system inflicts upon us, and about the places and actions of resistance and change that we can build to combat it.

The principle of equivalence of care states that prisoners must have access to the same standard of health care as the general population. If, as recent court decisions suggest, assisted dying is not limited to people with a terminal physical illness or irremediable suffering, it might also be requested by people with severe mental illness in detention. Some of the countries with legal regulations on assisted dying also have recommendations on how to handle requests from prisoners. However, detention itself can lead to psychological distress and suicidality, so we must consider whether and how people in such settings can make autonomous decisions. Ethical conflicts arise with regard to an individual's free will, right to life, and physical and personal integrity and to the right of a state to inflict punishment. Furthermore, people in prison often receive insuffcient mental health care. In this review, we compare different practices for dealing with requests for assisted dying from people in prison and forensic psychiatric facilities and discuss the current ethical and psychiatric issues concerning assisted dying in such settings. This article analyzes psychological suffering as a condition of the vital activity of individuals. It aims to understand its genesis in the educational activity. It is based on the idea that the psychological system is a synthesis of the biological systems of orientation that are incorporated by the educational system. This can be represented by the symbolic process of signification of social relations. We used the bibliographic method based on the Cultural-Historical Psychology and the theoretical conceptual analysis based on the historical and dialectical materialism. The results of the analysis led us to understand that the transition from the animal psychological system to the human social psychological system creates the contradictions that are the basis of psychological suffering. Suffering and illness are understood as forms of integration and disintegration of conscious activity. We understand that suffering is not encapsulated in the individual, but exists objectively in the material environment where vital activity takes place. We further understand that, since the psychological system is integrated into the social system, suffering and illness are socially referenced by the forms of social organization of the subjects' conscious activity. Several cases of infertility without the presence of a known medical cause and with a spontaneous remission have been studied from the psychological point of view. A look at infertility, in a psychodynamic way, suggests that it is the result of a defensive activation, aimed at promoting emotional protection, seen in pregnant women in high-risk obstetrics, in infertile couples waiting for infertility appointments and in pregnant women waiting for amniocentesis examination outcome. Thus, a spontaneous remission may be seen as a translation that the psychological impasse would have been overcome. This article intends to present a research project that has been held at the Maternity Hospital Dr. Alfredo da Costa (MAC), in Lisbon, and which participants are women followed in the MAC infertility consultation, unable to conceive or lead to good fruition a pregnancy after at least one year of regular sexual intercourse without resorting to contraceptive methods. In this article we intend to reflect the hindrances, difficulties and obstacles felt through the inception of a group psychotherapeutic setting in a Maternity Hospital. After all the bureaucratic issues have been solved out, the psychological resistance of the participants emerged, revealing to be a pattern.

- Abstract
Objective: to analyze the psychic suffering among nursing students in the context of academic life. Method: descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, carried out with 20 university students from the last semester of nursing from a public university in the Northeast, Brazil. The data were produced by open-ended questions, between March 2016 and February 2017, and evaluated by content analysis. Results: the reasons for psychological suffering were the difficulties of adapting the university students at the beginning of the course, conflicts during training and expectations regarding the end of graduation. Given this, the consequences identified were dietary difficulties, stress and symptoms of depression. The way of life of university students is influenced by academic experiences, including eating habits, overwork and lack of leisure. They can be precursors of serious health problems, such as suicidal ideation. Conclusion: it is suggested to expand prevention and clinical management strategies at the university linked to mental health services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present study aims to adapt and validate the Caregiver Grief Scale (CGS), previously validated for the Portuguese population for formal and informal caregivers by Vasconcelos-Raposo, Ribeiro, Silva, Santos, and Teixeira (2019). The sample consisted of 100 nurses in the Primary Health Care Services (CSP). For the analysis of the psychometric properties of the instrument, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used. The results showed a structure of three factors (Emotional Pain, Relational Loss, and Avoidance), which contradicts the original German version, as well as the earlier validation in Portuguese. The nurses' version presented the following adjustment indices: 2/df=1.609; CFI=.940; GFI=.901; RMSEA=.078; AIC=115,965, showing good composite reliability (.923) and discriminant validity. In conclusion, the Caregiver Grief Scale presents robustness to be used in the study of the grief of Portuguese nurses in Primary Health Care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Psychological distress has a negative impact on medical treatment and it is considered as one of the most important indexes of psychological suffering in oncological patients. Moreover, several studies suggested the relationship between distress and the age of the oncological patient as well as the different types of hospitalization. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify how these variables - taken together - could predict psychological distress. Methods. Oncological patients (n = 118; 47.5% female) were consecutively enrolled at the "Presidio Ospedaliero" of Saronno, ASST Valle Olona, Saronno, Italy. Patients were surveyed about social-demographic information and they were tested with the Psychological Distress Inventory (Cronbach's Alpha = .879). Results. A twoway ANOVA showed a statistical significant interaction between age and the kind of hospitalization: F = 6.126, p = .015, X2 = 0.041. In summary, the effect of age and type of hospitalization in predicting distress is not only additive only additive but multiplicative, i.e. age and types of hospitalization combine and interact with each other on the levels of distress. Conclusions. These results suggest possible ways for the creation of psychological interventions in order to reduce this kind of psychological suffering and to improve better health in oncological settings. Abstract Background The 2013–2016 West African Ebola outbreak infected 28,616 people and caused 11,310 deaths by 11 May 2016, across six countries. The outbreak has also resulted in the largest number of EVD survivors in history—over 17,000. Guinea was declared Ebola-free on 1 June 2016. Reports from the outbreak documented 3814 cases resulting in 2544 deaths and 1270 survivors. EVD survivors face various neuropsychological and psycho-affective alterations that have not been fully identified yet. This study aims to document the depressive symptoms among adult survivors in Guinea. Methods Depressive symptoms were investigated using the French version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) administered to all adult survivors (≥ 20 years) participating in the PostEboGui study and receiving care in Conakry. The study was combined with a clinical consultation by a psychiatrist at the Donka National Hospital in Conakry that ensured adapted care was provided when needed. Results Overall, 256 adult participants receiving care in Conakry participated in this study: 55% were women, median age 31 years [IQR: 26–40]. The median time since the Ebola Treatment Center (ETC) discharge was 8.1 months [IQR: 4.1–11.7]. 15% had a score above the threshold values indicating psychological suffering (15% for men and 14% for women). 33 people (16 women and 17 men) met with the psychiatrist, which resulted in the diagnosis of 3 cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 3 cases of mild depression, 13 cases of moderate depression, and 11 cases of severe depression, including 1 with kinesthetic hallucinations and another with visual hallucinations, and 1 with suicidal ideation and 3 with attempted suicide. Severe depression was diagnosed between 1 and 19 months after ETC discharge. The various identified forms of depression responded favorably to conventional drug therapies and cognitive behavioral therapy. Conclusion Long-term follow-up for EVD survivors will be necessary to understand the evolution of these pathologies. In the current post-epidemic context, these cases underscore the need to strengthen mental health diagnostic systems and treatment on a national scale.

- Abstract
The research is situated within the framework of the phenomenological paradigm, using the case study as a method and the semi-structured open biographical interview as a technique for collecting information, whose narrative-episodic element has allowed us to get closer to the experiential world of the interviewees, from of a narrative-generating question that served to stimulate the story, focusing on their life experiences in relation to the support, attention and care provided throughout their life. An interview structure subdivided into three blocks was developed, where the narrative questions gave us different reactions from the female caregivers and the balance questions turned the interviewees into experts and theorists of themselves. The entire process was submitted to the review of the research ethics committee of the University of Alicante. The results obtained show that women caregivers of people in situations of special difficulty throughout life identify the meaning of the term care with “being concerned about the other, being attentive and living the life of the other.” This care becomes support when, throughout the different stages they are living, they try to ensure that their son and daughter, brothers and sisters, or family members can “take care of themselves” and try to support them to achieve a routine that will help them make more autonomous. It is a self-taught work that begins with the attention that the women interviewed dedicate to their loved ones. The article provides new information about the confinement and pandemic stage from the narratives of female caregivers in relation to not identifying that stage as the greatest stressor that has marked their lives. - Abstract
The core of this article refers to the establishment of a reception and listening device with a psychoanalytic orientation in a public higher education institution. We support the praxis in a political-clinical experience of reception at the University, highlighting its therapeutic function as a form of collective resistance to an absolutely individualistic modus operandi. Each neoliberal attack on our society is capable of producing subjective cathexis of the death drive, resulting in suffering and illness as the subject is left completely alone, helpless, in a social condition that is falling apart. To address such state of discontent, we constructed an extension project, designed as a free psychoanalytic listening device, within a Public University, offered to the academic community, educators and, mainly, young students in a state of intense psychological suffering., O cerne desse artigo remete à instauração de um dispositivo de acolhimento e escuta de orientação psicanalítica numa instituição educacional pública de nível superior.

Research Framework : In child psychiatric hospitalization services, the bodies of adolescents are suddenly extracted from the public sphere in which they should normally be. The middle school, the high school, the streets between home and school as well as the meeting places with peers are deserted by these young people hospitalized because of psychological disorders. These are either related to underlying somatic pathologies or caused by mental illness. The physical withdrawal of young people, subject to strict rules imposed by the hospital, including confinement and the impossibility of leaving without breaks supervised by staff, raises many questions for both patients and their families. Objectives : This research aims to answer several of these questions : how to accept to put this body at rest, to remove it from the eyes of others ? How can it be restarted after this absence, find new landmarks, let it wander again in the public space and in contact with the bodies of those who circulate there without having left it ? The survey questions the place of the body in the process of learning individuality and the construction of their difference for hospitalized adolescents. The idea is that the hospital stay can be seen as a rite of passage for young people to return to the public world with a new self-image. Methodology : Thanks to the field work carried out over two school years, adolescents, their parents and staff are given the opportunity to speak out. The investigation ended with a dive into the daily life of a hospital. Ethnographic observation and interviews were used by the author. Results : It was possible to measure part of what is at stake between work on the body and mind, between the private and the public spaces, the social and the political in a place dedicated to suffering adolescents. Conclusions : There is a double movement in the study of the withdrawal of adolescent bodies : first, that of invisibility. After a more or less long process of dialogue between professionals, adolescents and families, the socialization of bodies and minds allows a new visibility of these young bodies brought up to the standards of society. The relationships developed show how adolescents are placed at the centre of this dynamic, presenting them as thinking and acting subjects. Contribution : This study contributes to the reflection on the adolescent situation, specifically by raising the question of physical and psychological norms that are dependent on professional and family perceptions. These norms also constantly reworked by adolescents even when they are suffering and under duress.

Objective: To analyze associations between attempted suicide and childhood trauma. Methods: A seven month comparative case-control study (28 subjects - patients with suicide attempt; 56 controls - patients without suicide attempt). The following instruments were used: Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS). Results: The group with suicide attempt had significantly higher scores for some variables: emotional abuse (p < 0.001), physical abuse (p < 0.001), emotional neglect (p < 0.001), and physical neglect (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest that variables related to previous trauma may influence future suicide attempts. The adoption of preventive and therapeutic actions related to mistreatments during child development is a crucial factor in reduction of suicide risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The Therapeutic Assessment (TA) is an evaluative and interventional process proposed to be semi-structured and collaborative with the objective of promoting positive changes in the client, who is invited to have an active participation during the process. At the TA, the results of standardized psychological tests are highlighted as facilitators of the client’s self-knowledge process. In this way, the findings of psychological self-report tests are usually integrated with projective methods to generate information that can broaden the client’s view of themselves. In this article, understanding the potential use of psychological tests and of the collaborative relationship from a case treated from the TA perspective was sought. The participant, Violet (fictitious name), was assisted in 10 sessions lasting between 60 and 115 minutes. The psychological tests Psychological Well-Being Scale (EBEP), Vulnerability and Stress at Work Scale (EVENT), Personality Factorial Battery (BFP), Rorschach Method and Social Skills Inventories 2 (IHS-2) were used. It was observed that, during the process, Violet increased her self-perception, which allowed changes in her way of acting in her love life and in her reflection on how her posture was seen by herself and herco-workers. It is believed that TA fulfilled the objective of establishing a therapeutic experience that would enable positive changes for the client. This case study contributed to broaden the understanding about the importance and use of psychological testing in this psychological assessment model.

ABSTRACT Guided by Winnicott’s psychoanalysis, the aim of this study is to reflect on the process of psychic illness in the “The Imitation of the Rose”, a short story by Clarice Lispector. Laura, after a period of psychiatric hospitalization, experiences a fragile integration, requiring external elements and figures to provide her with a sense of unity and identity. It is noticed, at all times, the character’s attempt to control her behavior and thoughts, demonstrating that she was fine and would no longer get sick. This story, therefore, allows us to reflect that her psychic illness continues to tailor the character’s relationships even after her period of hospitalization, in an attempt to exert control that, from the start, already revealed her emotional breakdown.

The psychological suffering of children and youth has been highly discussed in the last few years. This discussion revolves mainly around a possible intensification of this suffering, due to changes in the experience and configuration of social bonds. The interview approaches important aspects of the subjectivity of children and youth today. The dangers of the so called “pathologization of everyday life” and its consequences, like the spike in and appeal of medicalization, the status of the body as a means of constitution of identity and the growing number of suicide amongst young people are some of the questions here discussed, refusing and alarmist tone, an betting on the answers that the next generations will be able to produce. The role of parents, professionals and society as a whole in addressing these new forms of suffering is also discussed.

- Abstract
The necessary understanding of good and evil comes through the acceptance of the other. It is with the other that I reach the understanding of good and evil. Starting from the studies of H. Arendt, we discuss how in some situations we have come to "bureaucratize" relationships, to lose so the sense of self and the other, and therefore the sense of good and evil. The suffering that in psychopathological field is created for these reasons must be considered in the light of the understanding of good and evil, which comes through the other. Palliative care has long recognized the importance of treating the whole person to address a patient's physical, mental, and spiritual suffering. To address psychological suffering, palliative care often draws upon the pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy offered by psychiatry. Several new developments have occurred in the past decade within psychiatry that impact palliative care. For example, the recent updating of the Diagnostic and Stastistical Manual of Mental Disorders has led to renewed discussions on how to best distinguish grief from depression or recognize that both may be present at the same time. In this article, we draw upon a team of psychiatric, palliative care, and dual-trained physicians to highlight the “Top 10” tips from psychiatry to provide relief for patients with chronic disease or at the end of life. In 1994, the Rwandan genocide claimed the lives of approximately 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu citizens. Systematic rape was a strategic component of the Hutu extremist plan to eradicate the Tutsi minority population. This involved collective and repeated sexual assaults with brutal violence, public humiliation, and torture. This article maps the ongoing psychological impact on Rwandan genocide rape survivors and identifies implications for international nursing practice. The research formalizes their narratives, identifying a number of interconnected elements that combine to produce myriad forms of chronic psychological suffering in the Rwandan context. This work in turn reveals the specific needs of these survivors that may be addressed by nursing. It allows nurses, as experts in managing the human responses to health and illness, to develop a more complete understanding of psychological suffering as it pertains to vulnerable populations during and in the wake of extreme social conflict. This clarifies the roles of nurse educators, clinicians, and policy advocates as key agents in providing genocide rape survivors with the resources and expertise needed to effectively manage their ongoing trauma.
