In this book, Ludovica Grassi explores the importance of music in psychoanalysis, arguing that music is a basic working tool for psyche, as words are composed of sound, rhythm and intonation more than lexical meaning. There has been a long-standing and mutually-informing association between psychoanalysis, literature and the arts. Surprisingly, given the oral/aural basis of the ‘talking cure', music has largely been overlooked by psychoanalysis. Notably, neuroscientific research investigating music reception and production has been steadily increasing in range and scope over the years. However, in order to avoid confounding factors, empirical studies have focused primarily on non-vocal music. Remarkably, operatic vocal music has not featured prominently in either field. Yet the multi-dimensional, multi-layered nature of opera, which fuses together a number of different arts, would appear to provide fertile soil for both disciplines. This book aims to fill that gap, providing a stepping stone for further research. It leverages the individual strengths of psychoanalysis and neuroscience both separately and jointly as the inter-discipline of neuropsychoanalysis. By combining various theories of mind with knowledge about music processing in the brain, this book comprehensively examines the operatic reception experience, providing an account in subjective as well as objective terms. It explores the bittersweet enjoyment of operatic vocal music, which can literally move an operaphile to tears. The explanation for this may be found in a number of subjective dynamics that are unique to the reception of opera, rather than in any distinct objective neural processes, which are common to the reception of all music. Diese Bewegungsfolgen werden nicht, wie die Sprache, gedanklich dekodiert, sondern vom Hörer dadurch rezipiert, dass sie im Körpertonus nachgeahmt werden und auf diese Weise unmittelbar emotional wirken. Dieser archaische Modus der Aufnahme von Bedeutung ist bereits vorgeburtlich nachweisbar; er wird in der Musik kultiviert und spielt auch in der klinischen Arbeit eine bedeutsame Rolle. »Leikert nennt seine Theorie der Musik ›sehr einfach‹. Doch dieser begnadete Sänger Orpheus ist gleichzeitig ein exzessiv Trauernder, der im Mythos tragisch scheitert: Er erleidet den Verlust seiner geliebten Eurydike, folgt ihr in die Unterwelt, um sie zurückzugewinnen, was ihm jedoch nicht gelingt. Wohl um dieses Scheitern des göttlichen Sängers abzumildern bzw. ungeschehen zu machen wird bei Gluck der tragische Ausgang in ein glückliches Ende umgestaltet: Orpheus erhält seine Eurydike zurück. Warum diese Mythoskorrektur? Soll hier eine pathologische Trauer durch eine manische Gefühlseupohorie überdeckt werden? Seit den 90er Jahren nun ist ein deutliches Anwachsen von wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen zur Psychoanalyse der Musik zu verzeichnen. Die nahezu ausschließliche Orientierung der Psychoanalyse am gesprochenen Wort hat sich gewandelt und spätestens seit Kohuts Arbeiten zum Narzissmus und den Erkenntnissen der neueren Säuglingsforschung ist ein nachhaltiges Interesse an ganz frühen vorsprachlichen Kommunikationsprozessen entstanden. Dabei entdeckte man, dass die frühe Interaktion zwischen Mutter und Säugling ausgesprochen musikalisch ist, und vom Tonfall und Rhythmus des Sprechens bis zur Orchestrierung der Gebärden reicht, so dass man auch von der »Duett-Struktur« der Mutter-Kind-Interaktion spricht. Das neu erwachte Interesse der Psychoanalyse für den Zusammenhang von Musik und Psyche macht es sinnvoll und erforderlich, eine Bestandsaufnahme vorzunehmen und die wichtigsten Arbeiten im deutsch- und im englischsprachigen Raum, die weit verstreut und teilweise unbekannt sind, erstmalig in einem Sammelband zusammenzufassen.
