Background: Benzodiazepines and antidepressants are effective agents for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), with the HAM-A frequently used as a primary outcome measure. The GAD literature is inconsistent regarding which medications are more effective for somatic versus psychic symptoms of GAD, and treatment guidelines do not advocate for prescribing based on subtype. This meta-analysis aimed to determine whether benzodiazepines and antidepressants have a differential impact on the somatic versus psychic subscales of the HAM-A in GAD. Methods: An electronic search was undertaken for randomized controlled trials of either benzodiazepines or antidepressants for GAD that reported treatment response using the HAM-A subscales. Data were extracted by independent reviewers. A random effects assessment of weighted mean difference with 95% confidence intervals and subgroup difference was applied. All analysis was done on SPSS 26. An assessment of bias, and of quality of evidence was performed. Results: 24 randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria: 18 antidepressant trials, 5 benzodiazepine trials and 1 of both. 14 studies were assessed as having between some and high risk of bias, while 10 were assessed as having low risk of bias. Benzodiazepines (WMD of 1.81 [CI 1.03, 2.58]) were significantly more effective than antidepressants (WMD of 0.83 [CI 0.64, 1.02]) for reducing somatic symptoms of GAD (Chi2 = 5.81, p = 0.02), and were also more effective (WMD of 2.46 [CI 1.83, 3.09]) in reducing psychic symptoms than antidepressants (WMD of 1.83 [CI 1.55, 2.10]), although this comparison did not reach statistical significance (Chi2 = 3.31, p = 0.07). Conclusion: The finding that benzodiazepines were significantly more effective than antidepressants for somatic symptoms needs to be weighed up against potential benefits of antidepressants over benzodiazepines. It may be useful for future treatment guidelines for GAD to explicitly consider symptom subtype.

CAUSATION (Philosophy) ,PHILOSOPHERS - Abstract
Philosophers dispute whether an effect can be earlier than its cause (i.e. whether backwards causation can occur). For example, could a trainwreck cause a psychic to have earlier knowledge of it? Max Black tried to show backwards causation to be impossible but he failed to do so, or so I will argue. Nonetheless, his famous article can still teach us something important about certain cases of backwards causation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: This study focuses on the internationalization process of an important emerging markets multinational (EMM), aiming to understand how such companies manage to achieve relevant positions in the global economy. In seeking to understand its strategy and internationalization process, we tackle the debate on whether traditional behavioral international business theories are adequate to explain EMM internationalization processes. Method: An in-depth case study was performed with one of the largest global players in the beauty industry, Natura & Co. The case study method was selected given that an in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information was needed to investigate the phenomenon. Primary and secondary data were collected, analyzed, and triangulated. Main Results: This study brings the construct of organizational psychic distance to the discussion and how can it impact internationalization choices. Moreover, it illustrates how some EMMs are successfully applying concepts described by both traditional and EMM theories in their internationalization strategies Relevance / Originality: The study illustrates an empirical case from Latin America, a region poorly explored academically. Additionally, the case explains how a Brazilian company has managed to compete globally and become one of the biggest global players in the beauty industry. Theoretical / Methodological Contributions: The case discusses, for the first time, the construct of organizational psychic distance and its impact on internationalization choices. It also defies the boundaries of the existing theories and enriches the literature by portraying the springboard perspective as complementary to the Uppsala model so that both theories can dialogue and be extended., Objetivo: O presente estudo foca no processo de internacionalização de uma importante multinacional oriunda de um país emergente, visando compreender como tais empresas conseguem alcançar posições de relevância na economia global.

The purpose of the study is to find out whether in positive legal rules such as child protection laws and child welfare discuss about psychic developments that are part of the child's spiritual survival guarantee. If there is any whether it has become a guarantee for the smooth development of early childhood psychically is not just in material fulfillment. This study is a study that uses qualitative methods that refer to earlier sources of libraries and researches that support library data. With the normative description approach of positf hocumes relating to child rights and obligations. The results of the study showed that in the rule of the positive Law in Indonesia still only generally redaction of the guaranteed needs of child psychic development. What’s more, regarding the child who was a victim of divorce, but at least in article 156 The Islamic Law Compilation of point C could already be a solution in the event of a problem. So that the guarantee of child psychic survival cannot yet be normatively measured even more so in its application. So far what is seen in the positive hokum rules is simply a guarantee for the fulfillment of the living of material for the child.

- Abstract
Introduction: It is commonly believed that psychic ability, like many mental and physical traits, runs in families. This suggests the presence of a genetic component. If such a component were found, it would constitute a biological marker of psychic ability and inform environmental or pharmacologic means of enhancing or suppressing this ability. Methods: A case-control study design was used to evaluate differences between psychic cases and non-psychic controls. Over 3,000 candidates globally were screened through two online surveys to locate people who claimed they and other family members were psychic. Measures of relevance to the claimed abilities (e.g., absorption, empathy, schizotypy) were collected and based on those responses, individuals with indications of psychotic or delusional tendencies were excluded from further consideration. Eligible candidates were then interviewed and completed additional screening tests. Thirteen individuals were selected as the final "psychic cases," and ten age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched individuals with no claims of psychic ability were selected as controls. DNA from the saliva of these 23 participants was subjected to whole-exome sequencing. Two independent bioinformatics analyses were blindly applied to the sequenced data, one focusing exclusively on protein-coding sequences and another that also included some adjacent noncoding sequences. Results: Sequencing data were obtained for all samples, except for one in the control group that did not pass the quality controls and was not included in further analyses. After unblinding the datasets, none of the protein-coding sequences (i.e., exons) showed any variation that discriminated between cases and controls. However, a difference was observed in the intron (i.e., non-protein-coding region) adjacent to an exon in the TNRC18 gene (Trinucleotide Repeat-Containing Gene 18 Protein) on chromosome 7. This variation, an alteration of GG to GA, was found in 7 of 9 controls and was absent from all psychic cases.Discussion: The most conservative interpretation of these results is that they result from random population sampling. However, when the results are considered in relation to other lines of evidence, the results are more provocative. Further research is justified to replicate and extend these findings. - Abstract
The work of supervision in psychomotricity is the place of the psychic élaboration of clinical exercice. It is based on the listening and the enlightening of an experienced psychomotrician psychoanalyst or at least oriented in psychoanalysis, amongst a group of peers or by oneself. It allows one to take distance, and grasp bodily and verbal transfers and counter-transfers specific to the patients's care. It supports the professionnal in the affirmation of his or her identity and in refining his or her personal style. To the professional, supervision is a posture of observation of his or her engagement as much as of the engagement of the patient, his family and the institution. A posture that the professionnal acquires and appropriates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The founding of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness (SAC) can only be understood within the cultural context of its heritage. This paper is an historical narrative tracing the intellectual lineage of the SAC. The immediate causes were a series of symposia in 1974, including several on the challenge to anthropology represented by Carlos Castaneda, who attacked the way a critical part of anthropology was conducted. The argument in his own narrative was that one could not understand the shamanic world view without becoming a shaman. No informant could ever convey this, because so much of it was experiential. It could not be properly known unless one entered with sincerity into the experience, as a participant not just an observer. Two insights central to this thesis are particularly relevant to SAC: an aspect of human consciousness exists independent of time and space susceptible to volitional control; and, there is an interconnection between all life forms, which must be understood if the universal impulse humans feel toward the spiritual component of their lives is to properly mature. The SAC can be seen in pure Kuhnian terms as one response to the reassessment that Castaneda forced on anthropology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHICS - Abstract
The closing decades of the nineteenth century and the opening decade of the twentieth century were marked by an unprecedented rise in the practice of spiritual exercises in domestic séances amongst the cultural elites in Calcutta. This paper demonstrates how the sacrosanct character of these circles of grief came under suspicion when the supposedly 'psychic' component of spiritual matters became tainted by eroticised interactions with the dead. In this context, the afterlife was poised to become a site for the expression of female sexuality, normally repressed by a fragile politics of domineering enlightened male intellectualism. In this study, we quantitatively assessed mediums' phenomenology during readings in which survival psi is ostensibly used to telepathically communicate with physically deceased targets (discarnates) and during psychic readings for living targets to represent somatic psi which cannot be experimentally demonstrated. We also correlated dimensions of phenomenology with reading accuracy. Ten Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) participated in a baseline assessment and then in three counter-balanced conditions--a blinded reading for a living target, a blinded reading for a deceased target, and a control condition--and completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) at baseline prior to the first condition and after each of the three conditions. In a significant proportion of the readings (74%; p = .032), the blinded WCRM's impressions accurately reflected whether the target was living or deceased. Hypnoidal state scores, which estimate an individual's 'trance state,' were significantly higher for each of the two reading conditions than for the baseline and control conditions. Both types of readings demonstrated significantly higher scores for the PCI (sub)dimensions of altered time sense, imagery, imagery amount, and direction of attention and lower scores for the dimension volitional control. As predicted, scores for love were significantly higher for blinded readings for deceased targets than for living targets (3.65 ± 0.63 vs. 2.75 ± 1.18, respectively; t[9] = 2.78, p = .02, two-tailed). The global accuracy scores of readings for living targets (2.38 ± 1.51) were significantly negatively correlated with imagery vividness (r[6] = -0.76, p = .027) and absorption (r[6] = -0.74, p = .037). The global accuracy scores given to readings for deceased targets (3.22 ± 1.56) were not significantly correlated to any PCI dimensions. However, the correlations were significantly different between the deceased target condition and the living target condition for positive affect and accuracy (z = 1.92, p = .027 [one-tailed]). Overall, the novel quantitative evidence collected during this study under blinded, randomized, and counterbalanced conditions may reflect the general phenomenology of psi and supports and adds to the empirical comparisons of mediums' psychic functioning and survival psi experiences. One of the basic elements underlying a successful performance of a vocalist is the optimal state of training which, in its turn, is centred on the following main parameters: knowledge related to vocal art, physical, emotional and mental professional applied training. It is believed that the human brain structures work in parallel through neural networks, even if a part of the brain regions performs certain specialized functions, so mental training such as meditation or practicing mindfulness alter certain areas of the brain, and can have beneficial effects in overcoming stress, emotions, and generally improving performance. Thus, the methodology of mental training is considered to be of major and innovative importance in this context.

PSYCHOANALYSIS ,DUALISM ,POSSIBILITY ,COMORBIDITY ,SOUL - Abstract
In medicine and psychiatry, pain often falls under the term "comorbid disorder". We will therefore begin with a brief phenomenological analysis of the term "comorbidity". The emphasis here will not be so much on "morbidity" but on the prefix "co", more precisely on the fusion between the various forms of morbidity, including the pain itself. I would like to further state that the real thing that comorbidity is concerned with is essentially the interaction between the organic and the psychic, or, generally speaking, that between "body" and "soul". The prefix "co" can denote at least three possible situations, depending on the respective context: an organic cause with psychological effects, a psychological cause with organic effects, or, a much deeper source of origin, which is both organic as also affects the psychic and thus leaves behind the mere duality of this pair of terms. As we shall see, this last meaning became the source of inspiration for one of the important working hypotheses of phenomenology, which is the reduction of dualisms as body-soul, inside-outside, etc. from the perspective of their common condition of possibility. This hypothesis is shared by both psychoanalysis and the psychoanalytic clinic that emerges from it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides a discourse analysis of a large corpus of televised psychic readings. The goal of this study is to uncover the relationship between the linguistic structure of psychic readings and the psychics’ linguistic agenda. The findings of this study suggest that the psychics’ engage in linguistic tactics that allow them to negotiate and extract specific information from their subjects. The discourse structure of psychic readings facilitates deception, since the subjects, rather than the psychics, are the actual source of subject-specific information in a reading.

This article examines the relationship between determination and freedom in the human act of creation mediated by the use of sign systems. To this end, an approximation is made between György Lukács’ philosophical-ontological reflection on the dialectic between teleology and causality in work activity and analysis carried out by Lev Vigotski on the importance of sign systems for human psychic development. It is concluded that creation involves complex relations between the freedom of the subjects and the socio-cultural determinations.

Geriatric Formulation technologies ,Psychic ,Dysphagia - Abstract
Oral route is presently the gold standard in the pharmaceutical industry where it is regarded as the safest, most economical and most convenient method of drug delivery resulting in highest patient compliance. Oral delivery of active ingredients includes a number of technologies, many of which may be classified as Orodispersible tablets (ODTs). Orodispersible dosage forms have lured the market for a certain section of the patient population which includes dysphagia, bed ridden, psychic, and geriatric patients. Moreover, Orodispersible tablets shows increased bioavailability as compared to conventional dosage forms. Advancements in the technology arena for manufacturing these systems includes the use of freeze drying, cotton candy, melt extrusion, sublimation, direct compression besides the classical wet granulation processes. This has encouraged both academia and industry to generate new orally disintegrating formulations and technological approaches in this field. This article attempts at discussing the ideal characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, formulation aspects, formulation technologies and future potential of ODTs., [1] Abd Elbary, A., Ali, A. The classic problem of how the mind and body relate, which is part of the general problem of how the physical universe may have given rise to consciousness, cannot be solved with a purely physical approach. In an attempt to locate a region of nature where mind and matter closely meet, many theorists both in and out of physics have looked to the quantum field. In their article "The Misuse of Quantum Physics in Psychic Literature" that appears elsewhere in this Journal issue, Jack A. Mroczkowski and Alexis P. Malozemoff proffered the accusation that these theorists engaged in "psychic" speculation, a misuse of quantum mechanics, and a misappropriate of science to further a spiritual agenda. In this invited response, I argue that the use of quantum in this way is entirely correct and suggests a radical paradigm shift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper, aims to have as its object, features of fantastics in the Albanian literature and more specifically of the dreamer character in the Kutel's prose, as one of the distinguished representatives of the dreaming, symbolistic and fatastics prose in the Albanian literature. The Methodology of the research focuses on psychoanalitical studies, and aims to point out main literary features that the author holds, by describing the unconscious of his caharacter. The psychoanalytical point of view is an approach of surveillance and analysis over characters in terms of sensitivity and emotions they convey. In the Freud's assertion "the dream interpretation is the gold way toward the acknowledgement of the unconscious element in the psychic life". This approach creates the opportunity for an investigation of an incentive or impulse that effects in the unconscious of the character, that can be expressed in his conscious as result of suppresion and becomes a source of expression only in dreams. Kuteli as a writter has a certain individuality and tendency in the "narrative of dream" which was introduced as a lireary novelty of those times. By analysing the prose of this author, i will try to unbuckle the dream as a forbidden desire in the codification of fantastics in order to create the impression of satisfaction of the narrative. Following on this logic the author himself in a certain number of its narratives besomes a genuine witness of the psuchological analyses. We know that one of the most important functions of the literary elment in the text of prose is closely linked with the description of the emeotional state of the character, which witness in the text for indicators of linguistic diversity. There is a lack of research examining the mental health of practicing mediums, yet the nature of mediumship work inherently presents a number of challenges to the mental health of practitioners. In this study, we aimed to gain an understanding of how mediums experience their mental health in relation to their mediumistic practice and how they recognise and respond to psychological difficulties experienced by their clients. Fourteen mediums from the North West of England took part in one-to-one interviews, which were transcribed and subject to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: from past traumas to mediumistic identity; spirit makes sense, mental illness is chaos; being resilient but vulnerable; and ethical mediumistic practice. The research highlights the value of not dismissing or attempting to change appraisals of valued aspects of mediums' anomalous experiences. However, the findings do indicate that support for exposure to clients' difficulties might be helpful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper investigates one of the forms of expression and manifestation belonging to popular religiosity, the superstitions, practices through which people get into disagreement with their self and with the ideology advanced by institutions whose declared mission is to investigate and overcome man’s spiritual condition, the Church. There will be looked into, on the one hand, the major types of superstitions that the Romanians have according to a number of variables (ages, gender, education) and, on the other hand, the categories of conflict generated by the superstitious behaviour.

The purpose of this article is to establish that Kenneth E. Boulding, an economist whose work also encompassed many other disciplines, provided a valuable insight within the study of psychology. Boulding observed that while in an economic unit there is a store of financial capital which is necessary for continued existence, also in human nature there is a need for a reserve of psychic capital that is vital for the mental health of the individual and society. Psychic capital does this by providing a link consisting of positive feelings shared between the individual and the larger grouping. Boulding proposed that a coherent body of thoughts, memories, and emotions may be shared between individual and collective minds as shared psychic capital. Finally, some present-day examples are given whereby the consequences of a loss of psychic capital have been observed with particular emphasis on collective depression and suicide.

PurposeThe psychic distance often hinders the interaction between cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) and consumers. This paper aims to discuss the issues of psychic distance of consumers in the CBEC. In addition, it attempts to explain the factors that affect psychic distance from three dimensions of culture, economy and politics and the two different shopping behaviors caused by psychic distance.Design/methodology/approachThis research incorporates both theoretical and empirical studies. In this study, 249 validated questionnaires were selected from 300 Chinese CBEC consumers by snowball sampling, and the relationship between variables was tested using structural equation model (SEM). This was done through online research, and it is ensured that the data obtained are first-hand information.FindingsThe paper suggests the theoretical model operationalizing CBEC psychic distance and the empirical analysis results show that all the six influencing factors have a positive impact on the psychic distance of consumers. Logistics infrastructure barriers in the economic dimension are confirmed as the major influencing factor, and the significance of the political dimension is relatively small. Based on consumers' uncertainty of various kinds of information, psychic distance subconsciously causes consumers to deviate in the cross-shopping process.Originality/valueCurrently, research on e-commerce mainly focuses on saving trade costs and improving consumer welfare, while research on the internal impact of CBEC on consumers is insufficient. Psychic distance is a new concept in the field of cultural and social research. The originality of this paper is that the concept of psychic distance has been extended from overseas invested enterprises to research with CBEC consumers as the selected object. The obstacles of CBEC have been widely studied, but few are related to the closeness of consumers, or the inner feelings of consumers are ignored. In the context of CBEC, this paper lists the actual external factors and potential threats that may affect consumers' consumption concerns of CBEC from three dimensions. The real emotions of consumers in the face of these difficulties indirectly affect the purchase satisfaction and reduce the purchase desire. Consumer psychic distance is a real phenomenon in cross-border shopping, and it is almost inevitable for these difficulties. On the premise of inevitability, high psychic distance will slow down cross-border shopping in the eyes of consumers.

This article considers the way chemist William Crookes utilized the editorship of theQuarterly Journal of Scienceto promote the scientific importance of spirit phenomena. It explores the publishing of Crookes’s series of sensational articles that investigated the ‘Psychic Force’, a purported force of nature that Crookes discovered during experiments with the medium Daniel Dunglas Home. Crookes thus used the platform afforded to him in the journal to describe his experiments and present his evidence within the framework of an orthodox scientific discourse. While Crookes endured much criticism from certain scientific men, the serial format of his investigation meant that he was able to generate a great deal of interest. It also meant that his subsequent articles in the series could respond to critics by adjusting his experiments, overcoming perceived difficulties, and providing his readers with new and exciting details concerning his ongoing investigation as it was being conducted.

Although Robert Zemeckis’s film Beowulf (2007) is a re-writing of the Old English epic Beowulf with a shifting of perspective, certain details in the film can only be understood by referring to the poem. That is, a better understanding of the film is tied closely to an awareness of certain narrative elements in the epic. The emphasis on Beowulf in the poem shifts to the Mother in the film. This shift obviously leads to a recontextualization of the narrative elements of the former text. In the epic, Grendel is left without a father; however, in the film, he is fathered by Hrothgar but this biological fathering does not lead to linguistic castration. In their case, things are reversed: rather than the infant being castrated by the Law/language, the biological father is led to a psychic regression due to the son. This appears to be a dramatization of the conflicts between the (m)Other and the shared Other/the representative of the paternal metaphor: that is, Hrothgar. This time, the (m)Other conquers the representative of the paternal metaphor and annuls his masculinity, which radically changes the way in which we evaluate the course of events in the film. These departures make more sense if they are analyzed against the background of Lacanian epistemology. This paper aims to explore the film’s departures from the poem by approaching it from a Lacanian perspective.

This article examines how melancholia constitutes a psycho-geopolitical space interweaving Korean subjects’ psychic and political lives with the dynamics of the (post) Cold War alliance between Japan and the US. The Wednesday Demonstration is the weekly protest in Seoul that calls for an official apology and legal compensation from the Japanese government for comfort women who worked in the sexual slavery system under the Japanese Empire during WWII. The fact that the weekly protests have continued for 30 years since 1992 signifies that the comfort women issue has remained an unresolved (geo)political issue between South Korea and Japan for three decades, despite apologies and monetary compensations by the Japanese government. This article offers a psychoanalytic-geopolitical rationale for the endless grief of Korean postcolonial subjects who cannot accept the measures of the Japanese government regarding the comfort women issue. Based on 1-year’s participant observations and in-depth interviews with Korean activists who engaged in the Wednesday Demonstration from September 2019 to August 2020, this article aims to accomplish three goals. Firstly, this article shows how Korean postcolonial subjects were/are haunted by colonial past. Secondly, I examine why Koreans cannot complete mourning for comfort women in the context of ROK-US-Japan geopolitical relations. Lastly, this article interrogates how ethno-nationalists intervene to turn melancholia into a motivation for ethnic solidarity and how their attempt might have failed by exploring a Korean postcolonial subject’s psychic lives. In doing so, I argue that the wounds of Koreans related to the comfort women issue are not simply from colonial history, but they are postcolonial wounds that have not healed ‘appropriately’ under the (US-sponsored) South Korean/Japanese (post-)Cold War security arrangement.

Book 1 of Plato’s Laws, and particularly the image of the puppet introduced near its end, has been traditionally interpreted as presenting the moral psychology model that underlies the educational system delineated by the Athenian Stranger, which construes virtue as consonance between the non–rational and the rational elements of the soul. But a different and competing conception of virtue looms large in Laws 1, virtue as victory of the best part of the soul in psychic conflict. This paper argues that the Athenian’s conception of education as the correct conformation of originally conflicting psychic forces requires the simultaneous presence of the harmony and the conflict models of virtue in Laws 1. Education is in turn defined by calculation, the rational activity which persuasively leads the conflicting non–rational forces towards a consonant reciprocal rapport. By strategically developing his understanding of education and calculation in Laws 1, the Athenian shows how the harmony model of virtue overcomes the conflict model, while at the same time recognising that there is some truth to the conflict model after all and integrating it within the harmony model.

Conventional mental health treatments do not meet the needs of all who seek help: some consult informal and alternative providers. Researching the use and perceived benefits of these non-conventional sources of help may contribute to understanding help-seeking behavior and inform mental health policy. We explored the experiences of people consulting psychics (a type of alternative provider) for mental health needs, through comparisons with experiences of people consulting conventional and informal providers. An online survey sought feedback on help seeking for stress or emotional problems from 734 adults who had consulted a psychologist or counsellor; doctor or psychiatrist who prescribed medication; friend or family member; or psychic or similar alternative provider. Analyses included descriptive and inferential statistics and content analysis of textual responses. Problems were commonly described in symptom or disorder terminology with considerable overlap across groups. Content analysis of reasons for choice of helper identified four main categories—functional, reasoned, emotional, and passive—which differed significantly across groups (Cramer’s V = 0.26), with consulting psychics predominantly a reasoned choice. Ratings of overall effectiveness of help by those consulting psychics were greater than for the three other groups (d = 0.31 to 0.42), with very few adverse outcomes in any group. Help seeking for stress or emotional problems includes consultations with psychics or similar alternative providers, with self-reported outcomes better than for conventional providers. Further research is warranted to establish whether psychic consultations may serve a useful public health function.

Prematurity of birth can interfere in the mother's relationship with her baby, with risks of establishing psychic failures. So, this research sought to analyze how the maternal function can be affected by the conditions of premature birth of the baby and by the therapeutic itinerary in a neonatal referral unit for the Kangaroo Method. 06 mothers of preterm babies participated. Open interviews were conducted, using the conceptual operators of the protocol axes of the Research on Clinical Risk Indicators for Child Development (IRDI) as guides. The study was submitted to the Ethics Committee in resolution 466/12. In content analysis, the following thematic categories emerged: “Repercussions of premature birth in the mother's subjectivity” and “About time and support networks”. It was understood that the waiting time for the hospitalization of the preterm child can work for the mother as a time for psychic re-elaboration. The support networks and transfer attenuared the obstacles established in the mother-infant relationship, thus protecting maternal-infant mental health.

Joseph John Thomson is best known for detecting two isotopes of neon within cathode ray tubes that lay the foundation of the field of mass spectrometry. He was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the electron and for his work on the conduction of electricity in gases in the same devices. He is less known for his strong religious beliefs and his interest in psychical research and the paranormal. Thomson served as a member of the Society for Psychical Research for over 50 years and even became its Vice President. During this time, he attended a number of séances and demonstrations by professed psychics and mediums. This article traces those who influenced his interest in the paranormal, from Balfour Stewart to Lord Rayleigh and William Crookes. It reports and illustrates his beliefs and experiences investigating the paranormal in his own words.
