During the 2013 Singapore Strait International Marine Biodiversity Workshop, hundreds of ascidians were collected along with numerous other marine phyla. Collections were made intertidally as well as subtidally by snorkel, SCUBA, trawling and dredging. While many ascidian specimens remain unidentified, 14 aplousobranchs, nine phlebobranchs and 17 stolidobranchs have been identified; a surprising 50% of these comprise 20 new records for Singapore. An additional new record of the phlebobranch Perophora namei collected from the same area in 2014 and 2015 is included here. Of the 21 new records, Aplidium cf. grisiatum, Distaplia regina, Euherdmania cf. digitata, Cnemidocarpa irene, Monandrocarpa monotestis and Polyandrocarpa rollandi are also first records for the entire South China Sea region.

All colonies damaged somewhat during collection and zooid arrangement disrupted, but zooids not in systems. Zooids with independent siphons, thorax short and abdomen long, thread-like. Siphons with six rounded lobes, stomach with two longitudinal furrows. No larvae. #3788, three small colonies; #3811, one small colony; #3838, two colonies, larger one 4 cm across. Longest zooid 8 mm but all are somewhat contracted. In larger colony some semblance of loose systems present; #3864, one colony, some white pigment on siphons; #3874, one colony; #3879, one colony 1.8 cm in length; #4625, two colonies. Fifty-one species are discussed of which five are new. Of the remaining 46 species, 20 previously known from one to three records and 11 more frequently recorded have their known geographic range and/or range of morphological variation extended and the synonymy of a further 15 species is revised. Taxonomic problems, including phylogeny, are addressed in Rhopalaea crassa, Pycnoclavella detorta, Ecteinascidia spp. and Plurella (see Phallusia polytrema). New species are Sigillina pulvinus, Polyclinum corbis, Perophora longicaulis, Stolonica brevigastra and Botrylloides saccus.

Surveys of littoral invertebrates along the southern coast of Madagascar have produced the first study of ascidians in this part of the Indian Ocean. Collections were made by SCUBA divers in May and June 2010 down to 25m depth. This region is considered the southern limit for coral reefs but remains diverse biologically. Upwellings and an abundant plankton community particularly favour the abundance of ascidians in this area. Of the 39 species of non-didemnid species described here, eight are new. Ten species are common to South Africa. Other species were for the most part already known from the Mozambique Channel and a few have also been recorded in the western Pacific (either cosmopolitan or introduced).

(MNHN A 1 PSE 49) The colonies are made of a bush of lobes erect on sandy stalks, exactly as described and figured by Millar (1967). The bulbous top of a zooid is about 5mm in diameter, the stalk reaches 20mm. In formalin the zooids removed from the tunic are yellow and the testis lobes are often pink. The post-abdomen is particularly long, the ovary is far from the abdomen and the testis vesicles lie behind the ovary but do not reach the extremity of the postabdomen. A long vascular process penetrates into the common peduncle of the colony lobes. No larvae have been found. When fixed the colonies are totally disorganised remaining in mucous sheets and isolated zooids. The zooids are colourless and transparent with a wide square thorax (Fig. 1). The oral siphon is short, the cloacal siphon tubular. The first row of stigmata is dorsally curved, with about 35 openings per side. A brood pouch is appended to the dorsal and posterior angle of the thorax (Fig. 1). It contains one well developed larva at a time and a young embryo. The thoracic musculature is weak with few spaced longitudinal fibres. The abdomen is narrow, smaller than the thorax with the stomach at mid-length. The length of the post-abdomen varies but is always longer than the thorax plus abdomen; the testis vesicles are grouped in a cluster at the posterior extremity. The larvae 1.6mm long are as previously described (Monniot & Monniot 2001 Fig. 19) with 3 adhesive papillae and 4 ampullae on each side. Numerous collections of ascidians have been made in the Pacific and Indian Oceans but the inventory is far from complete. Each sampling provides new species. Two new didemnids are described here from Palau and Vanuatu. New records are given for 22 additional species with complementary descriptions and underwater photographs. The tropical ascidian fauna is highly diverse and successive new collections show that many of the species are not only widely distributed from the central to western Pacific but also common to the Indian Ocean.

Pseudodistoma nigrum n. sp. (Fig. 49) SYNTYPES. — Nouvelle-Calédonie. 18°07.013’S, 162°52.926’E, 16.VIII.2003 (UA 406 st 736), coll. Laboute, 2 colonies (MNHN A1 PSE 74). ÉTYMOLOGIE. — Du latin niger: noir. DESCRIPTION Les colonies forment des masses arrondies mamelonnées portées par un pédoncule court incrusté de sable. La plus grande colonie mesure 3,5 cm de haut. La partie supérieure est constituée de lobes soudés dont la surface est lisse sans incrustation. La couleur in vivo est crème et devient noire après fixation, mais la tunique du pédoncule n’est pas pigmentée. Les zoïdes (Fig. 49A) fixés sont incolores et mesurent jusqu’à 15 mm de long. Des prolongements vasculaires font suite au long post-abdomen. Les deux siphons sont courts à 6 lobes arrondis (Fig. 49A). De chaque côté on compte 10 à 12 faisceaux musculaires longitudinaux sur le thorax qui se prolongent en restant très forts sur l’abdomen qui est généralement très contracté. La branchie a 3 rangs d’une vingtaine de stigmates de chaque côté. L’oesophage est long (Fig. 49D) et l’estomac, avec 4 côtes bien marquées se situe aux ⅔ de la longueur de l’abdomen. Le post-estomac est étroit suivi d’un court segment peu renflé qui forme le fond de la boucle intestinale. Le rectum débute par un renflement net. Le post-abdomen est long et mince (Fig. 49A, C). L’ovaire est très éloigné de l’abdomen et suivi d’une rangée irrégulière de vésicules testiculaires. Le coeur est terminal. L’extrémité du post-abdomen porte quelques protubérances arrondies entre lesquelles part un long appendice vasculaire (Fig. 49C). Une larve (Fig. 49E) est incubée dans une poche incubatrice qui se développe très tôt, à la jonction thorax abdomen. Le tronc mesure 1 mm. Les 3 vésicules adhésives sont divergentes, larges, sur des pédoncules étroits. Elles sont entourées de chaque côté du corps par 6 prolongements digitiformes disposés de la façon suivante: 1 dorsal, 1 ventral et 2 de chaque côté entre les vésicules adhésives. Deux petites ampoules sont accolées à la partie ventrale de la masse viscérale. L’une des larves montre de très nombreux stigmates. REMARQUES Par ses colonies nues sur un court pédondule ensablé, Pseudodistoma nigrum n. sp. se rapproche de P. pilatum Kott, 1992 du sud de l’Australie. Il en diffère par la couleur noire de la tunique due à des cellules pigmentaires très denses et moins de zoïdes par lobe. Seventy‐eight species of Ascidiacea, including 21 new species from deeper waters (about 100 m and occasionally to about 500 m) off Western Australia appear to represent a diverse fauna not previously sampled. The relatively few solitary species taken include two possibly introduced (Styela plicata and S. clava). Large aplousobranch colonies dominate the collections. Aplousobranch species with numerous, small, deeply embedded zooids in massive three‐dimensional, vertical and often branched or stalked inflexible colonies supported by embedded sand (Polyclinindae) or calcareous spicules (Didemnidae) are common. Species with flexible stalks (enabling them to respond to prevailing currents) such as Clavelina meridionalis, Sigillina australis and S. cyanea were not taken often. Some known species (e.g. Synoicum chrysanthemum, and Atriolum tubiporum) previously considered rare were taken at these depths in significant numbers. Pseudodistoma gracile Kott, 1992a (Figure 9A) Pseudodistoma gracilum Kott 1992a, p 433 and synonymy. Distribution Previously recorded (see Kott 1992a): South Australia (Great Australian Bight, Investigator Group, Kangaroo I.); Victoria (Beachport, Western Port); New South Wales (Jervis Bay, Port Jackson); Queensland (Great Barrier Reef); New Caledonia. New records: South Australia (Kangaroo Is, 8–10 m, SAM E3270); Tasmania (Maria Is; Port Davey, 4– 6 m, SAM E3269). The new records from Tasmania are the most southerly locations yet recorded for this species. Description The colonies have the robust, contractile zooids of the usual form entangled in the soft, disintegrating mucus-like test as described previously. Remarks Although colonies and zooids resemble those of the Japanese P. fragile Tokioka, 1958, the present species broods only a single embryo at a time, while the Japanese species has a long brood pouch with up to five embryos being brooded at a time and a significantly longer larval trunk (see Kott 1992a). Pseudodistoma australe Kott, 1957 Pseudodistoma australis Kott 1957, p 101. Pseudodistoma australe: Kott 1992a, p 428 and synonymy; 2003, p 1625 [not 1985 (sic) = 1992a]. Distribution Previously recorded (see Kott 2003): Western Australia (Exmouth Gulf to Cockburn Sound); South Australia (Great Australian Bight, Cape Jaffa); Victoria (Port Phillip Heads); Queensland (Swain Reefs). New record: Tasmania (Port Davey, 8–10 m, SAM E3231). Description The colony is soft and translucent, its upper surface expanded into four short conical lobes like a crown. It converges slightly toward the base, where it appears to have been fixed to a wide, flat surface about 4 cm in diameter. Zooids extend up the colony parallel to one another and the independently opening six-lobed apertures are around the outside of the terminal lobes. Thorax and abdomen are, together, relatively short. Three rows, each of about 12 branchial stigmata, are in each half row and a short gut loop with a smooth-walled stomach is about halfway down the short abdomen. The posterior abdomen is very long, with strong bands of muscles along each side. Gonads were not detected in the newly recorded colonies, which appear to be in a vegetative stage, although there is a large embryo in the brood pouch (at the postero-dorsal end of the thorax) in a few of the zooids. Remarks These gelatinous, translucent rose-coloured colonies with a thick, soft stalk consisting of one or more terminal lobes, are characteristic of this wide-ranging apparently indigenous species. The newly recorded location is the most southerly recorded for this species. Description The colonies are as previously described, with the long, narrow, cylindrical sandy stalks arising from a common base and a terminal cylindrical glassy, transparent head with the relatively crowded zooids opening all around it. The sand becomes less crowded toward the top of the stalk and is only sparse in the head. In this species the oesophagus is long and the four-chambered pseudodistomid stomach is in the distal one-third of the relatively long abdomen. Genus Pseudodistoma Michaelsen, 1924 Pseudodistoma aureum (Brewin, 1957) (Figs 17; 114C) Sigillinaria aurea Brewin, 1957: 580. Type locality: New Zealand. Synonymy: see Pseudodistoma aureum – Kott 1992a: 426. MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Tonga. Vava’u Fotula, small rock off west coast of Vava’u, 18°38.92’S, 174°04.12’W, 30 m, 13.XI.1997 (MNHN A1 PSE 50). DESCRIPTION The colonies are bulbous and pale yellow. The surface is slippery and without sand (Fig. 114C). A colony with a diameter of 25 mm has a length of 20 mm. There are no systems. The superficial layer of the tunic is very soft, the internal tunic tougher. When preserved, a white pigment makes the tunic opaque. Both siphons are of equal length, with six lobes. The thorax is shorter than the abdomen (Fig. 17A). The gut loop is long. The stomach, with four folds (Fig. 17A, C) lies well posteriorly, followed by a short conical poststomach. The mid-intestine is short and transverse, and the rectum begins with caeca. The post-abdomen (Fig. 17B) has a variable length; when the testis and ovary are fully mature, it is about twice as long as the abdomen. The ovary is far from the gut and is followed by a string of testis follicles that reaches the heart. The larvae (Fig. 17D) are incubated in the abdomen, alongside the oesophagus. The trunk measures 0.5 mm. The larva’s three rows of stigmata are already differentiated. The three long, diverging adhesive papillae alternate with four pairs of digitiform ampullae. REMARKS This species is characterised mainly by the balllike shape of its sand-free, yellow colonies, as well as by their translucent tunic and the zooid’s long oesophagus. DESCRIPTION Les colonies (Fig. 77B) sont constituées de coussins parfois fixés par une base étroite, ou bien elles se développent en lobes pendants, certains de 40 cm de long pour un diamètre de 0,5 à 1,5 cm. La tunique est opaque, blanc verdâtre, de consistance gélatineuse. Les ouvertures buccales sont réunies en groupes irréguliers. Les zoïdes (Fig. 48A, B) sont allongés selon l’axe de la colonie et atteignent parfois 2 cm, les post-abdomens sont entrecroisés. Les 2 siphons, en position apicale, ont 6 lobes arrondis (Fig. 48D). Le premier des 3 rangs de stigmates est relevé dorsalement et compte environ 20 perforations de chaque côté. L’abdomen (Fig. 48D) est aussi long que le thorax. L’estomac est court avec 4 plis saillants; il est placé aux ⅔ de l’abdomen. Le postestomac est mince, nettement délimité de l’intestin moyen qui est d’abord large puis aminci au fond de la boucle. L’intestin postérieur débute par 2 caeca. Le thorax et l’abdomen sont exactement semblables dans les zoïdes des colonies basses ou digitées. Dans les colonies allongées, les post-abdomens très longs contiennent 1 ovaire à mi-longueur suivi de lobes testiculaires, en 1 ou 2 rangs irréguliers, jusqu’au coeur (Fig. 48C). Une larve est incubée contre l’oesophage, sans dilatation en poche (Fig. 48D). Le tronc mesure 500 µm, la queue décrit un demi-tour. Il y a 3 papilles adhésives courtes et 4 paires de vésicules épidermiques peu saillantes. Citorclinum laboutei Monniot F. & Millar, 1988 (Fig. 116B) Citorclinum laboutei Monniot F. & Millar, 1988: 321, fig. 1, pl. 1. Type locality: New Caledonia. MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Papua New Guinea. Coral Sea, eastern Fields, 10°00.66’S, 145°39.90’E, 10 m, 14. VI.1998 (MNHN A3 CIT 4). DESCRIPTION As in New Caledonia, the colonies of this polycitorid species form round heads, from 2 to 5 cm in diameter raised on peduncles. The tunic is white, vitreous, smooth and naked (Fig. 116B). Both siphons of the zooids are obvious at the colony surface, but they are not circled here with white rings. The zooids are well apart, perpendicular to the colony surface. The characters of the zooids are very consistent with six lobes at each siphon, about 16 longitudinal muscles on each side, three rows of numerous stigmata, a smooth stomach wall, and a long post-abdomen. The ovary lies in the intestinal loop, the testis in the posterior part of the post-abdomen. The heart lies to one side of the gut loop. A few embryos are being incubated in the cloacal cavity, but no tadpole is fully developed. REMARKS This monospecific genus is recorded again, and here for the first time.
