Abstract Increasing crop diversity is a way for agriculture to transition towards a more sustainable and biodiversity-friendly system. Growing buckwheat intercropped with paulownia can contribute not only to mitigating climate change but can also enrich the environment with species of agricultural importance, without causing a decline in pollinators, since buckwheat is pollinated mainly by the honeybee. In a field experiment comparing growing buckwheat with paulownia against a monoculture crop, we investigated differences in flower visitation and beekeeping value, as well as the associated impact on crop yields. We analysed the effect of intercropping on the beekeeping value of buckwheat in terms of bee population size and the sugar mass in buckwheat flowers, nectar mass in buckwheat flowers, the quality of the delivered raw sugar and biometric characteristics. We found significant differences in the number of branches on the main shoot and the total number of branches. Significantly higher parameters were obtained in sites with buckwheat monoculture. The cultivation method variant did not cause differentiation in either the structure elements or the yield itself. Yields ranged from 0.39 (2021) to 1.59 (2023) t·ha−1. The average yield in intercropping was slightly lower (0.02 t·ha−1) than in the monoculture system of buckwheat (0.93 t·ha−1). More flowers per plant per day of observation and more flowers in millions of flowers per hectare per day of observation were observed in the intercropping of buckwheat with paulownia. Based on our experiment, we concluded that growing buckwheat in monoculture significantly increased the number of flowers, resulting in an increase in pollinator density and an increased number of pollinators per unit area.

Natural compounds are important source of desired biological activity which helps to improve nutritional status and brings many health benefits. Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill. which belongs to the family Aquifoliaceae is a plant rich in bioactive substances (polyphenols, saponins, alkaloids) with therapeutic potential including hepatic and digestive disorders, arthritis, rheumatism, and other inflammatory diseases, obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia. In terms of phytochemical research I. paraguariensis has been the subject of most intensive investigations among Ilex species. Therefore, we concentrated on other available Ilex varieties and focused on the content of fatty acids of these shrubs. The fatty acid compounds present in Ilex sp. samples were analyzed by GC-MS. 27 different fatty acids were identified in the extracts. The results showed that many constituents with significant commercial or medicinal importance were present in high concentrations. The primary component in all samples was α linolenic acid(18:3 Δ9,12,15). Differences of this component concentration were observed between cultivars and extensively analyzed by PCA, one- way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Significant correlations between compound concentrations were reported.

Abstract Heptacodium miconioides is an increasingly popular ornamental plant, originally being endemic to China. The late and long flowering determines its ecological and ornamental value in cultivation. The aims of this research were to define and distinguish phenological phases of the development of Heptacodium miconioides in the temperate zone region and identification of anatomical changes within the stem during autumn in relation to phenological phases and climatic conditions. Phenological observations were carried out in Wrocław during 2012–2013, as well as in Warsaw (Poland, 52.6°N, 20.5°E) during 2018–2021. During the last year of research an analysis of the anatomical structure was carried out for young stems that bore flowers that year, as well as older, 2- to 6-year-old ones. The material was collected H1 – 10.09., H2 – 28.09., H3 – 16.10., H4 – 3.11., H5 – 21.11. The width of annual increments in subsequent years was determined; length, width and vessel density in early and latewood for subsequent rings of annual growth was measured, as well as the width of the phloem in 1–6-year-old stems (2016–2021). In the vegetative stage three main stages of development were distinguished (leaf buds have the green tips; full autumn discoloration of leaves; leaves falling). In the generative phase, which lasted on average from August 22nd to January the 7th five main phases of development were distinguished (flowering, unripe fruits, ripe fruits, spreading of seeds). Increased average temperature during winter and spring had an effect on the growth pattern: early phenological stages occurred sooner and foliage development lasted 44 days longer. Flowering occurred at a similar date at both observed locations and climatic conditions. This year’s shoots flowering on a radial section with axial symmetry, were slightly flattened and in clusters arranged regularly to match the shape. Heptacodium develops 2–6 years old shoots with radial symmetry. The growth ring boundaries are distinct, the wood semi-rings porous, with marked differences in the structure of the primary and secondary shoot. Lignification of tissues before winter ends during late leaf-fall phase. The research indicated the adaptive potential of Heptacodium in response to climatic conditions of temperate zone.

The aim of this research was to assess the influence of fresh miscanthus straw shreds as a component of growing media in nursery production of perennial Sedum spectabile ‘Stardust’ and woody shrub Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’. A total of five substrate mixes composed of peatmoss and miscanthus straw were used: 100%P, 70%P:30%M, 50%P:50%M, 70%P:30%M, 100%M. Each substrate was subjected to three fertilizer treatments: Basacote, Basacote + YaraMila, and YaraMila. The growth response of both tested species was very similar. In general, plants performed best in 100%P, and the quality decreased with increasing miscanthus straw amendment; however, differences in height and dry weight at the level of ~9% suggest that Sedum plants obtained market value with up to 50% miscanthus amendment and Hydrangea plants with up to 30% miscanthus mixed in media. The most favorable effect on the tested parameters was a combination of Basacote + YaraMila, which delivered more soluble salts, and in higher rates than Basacote and YaraMila used separately. Decrease in EC and nutrients in the substrate with increase in miscanthus straw amendment suggest that uniform irrigation among all the treatments contributed to nutrients leaching from miscanthus media due to its lower water holding capacity.

This research investigates the potential health benefits of extracts from the seeds, peels, and pulps of quince, medlar, and bletting medlar fruits. Our study reveals that the polyphenol content is higher in the skin than in the flesh of the fruits tested, with the highest concentration found in the skin of fresh medlar fruits (1148 mg GAE/100 gDM). The extracts from medlar and quince show the highest antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP tests), while the pulp of bletting medlars exhibits the highest inhibition ability against α-amylase (53.7% at a concentration of 10 mg/mL). The analysis of fatty acids in the tested samples indicates the presence of nine major fatty acids, with linoleic acid being the most abundant (716–1878 mg/100 g of biomass). Analysis of sterols in the tested material shows five main phytosterols, with β-sitosterol being the most commonly studied and recommended phytosterol. The highest amount of phytosterols is found in the lipid fraction of the quince seeds (1337.1 mg/100 g of biomass). Therefore, we suggest that fruit peel extracts can be utilised as a natural source of antioxidants and as an alternative treatment for carbohydrate uptake disorders. However, it is important to note that bletting medlar loses a significant amount of polyphenols and antioxidant activity after the bletting process. This article also describes the sensory analysis process, which is a valuable tool for evaluating the quality of food products. Our study evaluates the attributes and preferences of the fruits of quince, medlar, and bletting medlar using a nine-point hedonic scale. The results show that quince is the highest-rated fruit in terms of aroma, colour, and overall acceptability (7.3, 7.0, and 4.2, respectively) while bletting medlar is the least preferred fruit. The article concludes that sensory analysis can aid in the development of new products and recipes that meet consumer preferences. In general, the study suggests that both fruit peel extracts and sensory analysis are important tools for assessing product quality and developing products that meet consumers’ preferences.

The effect of meat marinating with aqueous extract of Ilex meserveae dried leaves on dry-aged beef quality was investigated. Shear force, TBARS value, color parameters, fatty acid profile, and sensory properties were evaluated in beef cuts dry-aged for 21 days. The use of Ilex meserveae dried leaves as marinade at 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% w/v did not affect the shear force and color parameters of dry-aged beef. The marinating of beef cuts with Ilex meserveae resulted in efficient prevention of lipid oxidation without impairing sensory acceptability. Aqueous extract Ilex meserveae can be applied as a natural ingredient in meat marinade to prevent peroxidation.

The aim of the study was to analyze potential health-promoting components of 21 new cultivars of goji (Lycium barbarum L.). Polyphenols and carotenoids were identified by LC-MS-Q/TOF and quantified by UPLC-PDA. Moreover, vitamin C, sugar and organic acid profile, antioxidant (ABTS+·, FRAP) and in vitro antidiabetic potential (inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and anti-aging (acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase BuChE) activity were evaluated. Some new cultivars contained high amounts of polyphenols (g8, g13 and g43) and carotenoids (g11, g26 and g12), and showed antioxidant (g8, g17, g22, g23), antidiabetic (g26), and anti-aging activity (g4, g6, g37). They were also content of vitamin C (2.39 to 6.24 mg/100 g), organic acids (1.95–4.30 g/100 g), and sugars (1.59–5.11 g/100 g). In conclusion, selected new cultivars might be used for the production of functional foods, as well as for medical or/and cosmetic purposes.

Plants from the Ilex genus are known for properties such as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, can act as antiobesity agents and thus can be helpful in medicine. Some holly species, such as Ilex paraguariensis (widely known in the form of popular beverage: yerba mate), have been investigated, while others have been partially researched or remain unknown. Therefore, we performed qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analyses and screened antimicrobial properties of lesser-studied species (I. aquifolium L., I. aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ and I. × meserveae ‘Blue Angel’). I. paraguariensis was used as a standard species for comparison purposes. Investigations were performed on water extracts due to their expected activity and composition. Antimicrobial research included evaluating minimal inhibitory, bactericidal (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and fungicidal concentration (Candida albicans, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, and Aspergillus niger) of extracts. The influence of the extracts on the production, eradication, and viability of bacterial biofilms was also analysed. It was established that Ilex paraguariensis possesses the richest profile of hydroxycinnamic acids derivatives in terms of component concentration and diversity. Ilex spp., especially I. × meserveae, contain a slightly higher amount of flavonoids and more different flavonoid derivatives than I. paraguariensis. However, the strongest antibacterial activity was shown by I. aquifolium L. and its cultivar ‘Argentea Marginata’ in terms of minimal inhibitory, bactericidal and fungicidal concentration, and biofilm assays. Extracts from both species significantly reduced the biofilm viability of S. aureus as well, which may be of use in the production of multicomponent lavaseptics, antiseptics, diuretics (supporting urinary tract infection therapy) and, due to their action on fungi, additives to growth media for specific fungi. The significant content of saponins enables Ilex extracts to be used as natural emulsifiers, for example, in cosmetics. Moreover, relatively high chlorogenic acid and rutin content may suggest use of Ilex spp. to treat obesity, digestive problems, in chemoprevention, and as preservatives in the food industry.

Plants of the genus Ilex are widespread throughout the world, with its best-known representative being Ilex paraguraiensis from South America. The European species Ilex aquifolium shows similarities in its terpenoid, sugar and phenolic acid profiles. Using aqueous extracts of Ilex aquifolium as a supplement in Wistar rats showed that, despite the lack of caffeine, it had strong hypocholesterolemic effects. In addition, a reduction in oxidative lipid degradation and a decrease in hepatic steatosis in histopathological studies were observed. The results of this study suggest that extracts from the European species Ilex aquifolium may have potential as an alternative treatment for hyperlipidemia.

The Viburnum opulus (guelder rose) fruit is a Polish native fruit that grows across almost the entire territory of the country, except for the Tatra Mountains. The fruits are rich in nutrients and biologically active compounds, however, they are rarely used for food production or as a dietary ingredient. This study assessed this fruit for dry matter (17.3% ± 0.7), extract (13% ± 0.53), titratable acidity (1.78 g/100 g ± 0.48), pectin (1.10% ± 0.97), vitamin C (47.79 mg/100 g ± 1.02), the amount of sugar identified as fructose (6.85 g/100 g ± 0.67), antioxidant activity, ABTS (14.64 ± 0.61 μM Trolox/100 g), FRAP (211.14 ± 1.04 µM Trolox/100 g) and total polyphenolic content TPC (1695.88 ± 0.86 mg GAE/100 g). The analysis of phenolic identification was performed using the ACQUITY Ultra Performance LC (UPLC) system with the binary solvent manager and PDA detector.

This review describes the effect of added freeze-dried guelder rose fruit powder (GRFP) on the quality parameter of homogenized meat products (HMP). In this study, the pH, cooking loss, instrumental color (L*, a* and b*), texture profile, TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), antimicrobial assay, polyphenol content and sensory evaluation of HMP were evaluated. Due to the antioxidant activity of guelder rose fruit (the chlorogenic acid dominated among the identified compounds of the fruit), it was observed that, in the samples with the highest amount of the extract, the amount of microorganisms responsible for food spoilage decreased after storage time (14 days, 4 °C). The addition of lyophilized fruits with a low pH value resulted in the highest cooking loss. The results of sensory evaluation show that, along with the increase of GRFP addition, the taste and smell of meat products become less acceptable. The bitter taste of guelder rose fruit can affect the sensory assessment of meat products. This study is of a pilot nature; further research attempts will be made to offset the problems and design certain solutions, e.g., the use of freeze-dried encapsulation and its addition to meat products.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the geocomposite (GC) on macronutrient uptake of container-grown Brunnera macrophylla and substrate properties. The GC consists of super-absorbent polymer (SAP), internal skeleton and non-woven geotextile. It was designed to retain water in the soil in a form available for plants, by roots overgrowing the geotextile to access water. The GC was soaked in a multi-compound fertilizer (Insol® U) and compared with soluble fertilizer (SF) and controlled-release fertilizer (CRF). The fertilizer rates were calculated to cover the equal N supply: 0.36 and 0.72 g N plant−1. Nitrogen uptake of Brunnera cultivated with the geocomposite was approximately twice and three times as high as that of plants fertilized with SF and CRF, respectively. Exceptionally high N content was observed in plants cultivated with the GC-0.72 g N plant−1. The use of the GC also enhanced the accumulation of K and P, while CRF strongly reduced their content in plants. Distinct relations could be observed in the case of Ca accumulation. GC-0.72 g N plant−1 increased EC and water content in the medium without direct contact between SAP and substrate.

This study aimed to identify and quantify the chemical composition and polyphenolic profile of 19 cultivars of Chaenomeles × superba, Chaenomeles japonica, and Chaenomeles speciosa by liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector and quadrupole time-of-flight electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-PDA-QTOF-ESI-MS). Antioxidant (ABTS on-line, ABTS, FRAP, and ORAC), as well as in vitro biological activities, i.e., the ability to inhibit α-amylase, α-glucosidase, pancreatic lipase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), and 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOX) were determined. Most of the Chaenomeles species and cultivars analyzed in this study have not been examined in this respect until now. Fruits contained 30.26 to 195.05 mg of vitamin C, 0.65 to 1.69 g of pectin, 0.32 to 0.64 g of ash, 0.60 to 3.98 g of sugars, and 41.64 to 110.31 g of organic acids in 100 g fresh weight. The lowest content of total polyphenols showed C. speciosa ‘Rubra’ (57.84 g/kg dry weight, dw) while C. × superba ’Nicoline’ (170.38 g/kg dw) exhibited the highest concentration of those compounds. In the phenolic compounds, polymeric procyanidin fraction predominated (65%) with procyanidin B2, C1, and (−)-epicatechin the most abundant. The antioxidant capacity measured by ABTS assay was mainly formed by polymeric procyanidins and flavan-3-ols, which was confirmed by ABTS on-line profiling. Chaenomeles fruits showed high potential for inhibition of α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase. The analyzed cultivars displayed greater potential for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition than for butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). The data indicate that Chaenomeles fruits could be regarded as a promising source of bioactive functional food.

The very fast growing Oxytree (Paulownia Clon in Vitro 112) is marketed as a promising new energy crop. The tree has characteristically large leaves, thrives in warmer climates, and requires initial pruning for enhanced biomass production in later years. We explored valorizing the waste biomass of initial (first year) pruning via thermal treatment. Specifically, we used torrefaction (‘roasting’) to produce biochar with improved fuel properties. Here for the first time, we examined and summarized the fuel properties data of raw biomass of Oxytree pruning and biochars generated via torrefaction. The effects of torrefaction temperature (200~300 °C), process time (20~60 min), soil type, and agro-technical cultivation practices (geotextile and drip irrigation) on fuel properties of the resulting biochars were summarized. The dataset contains results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as well as proximate and ultimate analyses of Oxytree biomass and generated biochars. The presented data are useful in determining Oxytree torrefaction reaction kinetics and further techno-economical modeling of the feasibility of Oxytree valorization via torrefaction. Oxytree torrefaction could be exploited as part of valorization resulting from a synergy between a high yield crop with the efficient production of high-quality renewable fuel.

North American hackberry as a tree with resistance to Dutch elm diseases, pollutions and urban conditions is predisposed to becoming one of the common tree species for urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods for nursery production of this species. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of fertilization and different methods of cultivation in rows with simultaneous use of geocomposite on the growth of North American hackberry in nursery production. Mechanical fallow in rows ha the most prefer-ably influence, while living mulch with perennial ryegrass had rather negative impact on tested biometric features of North American hackberry. There was found a positive correlation between biometric features and foliar N content, as well as negative correlation between biometric features and soil salinity.

Propagation of juniper from cuttings is the primary method used in the nursery. Process of rhizogenesis in these plants is long and not always allows to obtain a good quality of rooted cuttings. In the experiment there was investigated the effect of laser light doses (semiconductor laser, model CTL 1106MX, power 200 mW, wave length 670 μm) and the footing agent AB on percentage of rooted cuttings, plants height, length and the number of roots. The examined juniper taxa proved diverse response to the variants applied (combination of laser radiation and the rooting agent AB). The increase in the number of rooted cuttings after application of the rooting agent AB, as well as three times introduced irradiation in Eastern redcedar ‘Blue Arrow’. This form also produced longer roots for the variant combining twelve times applied irradiation and the effect of rooting agent. In the cuttings of Chinese juniper ‘Stricta’, exposed to laser radiation in six – (D6) and twelve times applied doses (D12), there was observed significant stimulation of root length. Introduced treatment variants of shoot cuttings of Common juniper ‘Schneverdinger Goldmachangel’ brought about considerable root elongation (except for D3 dose). The dose providing for significant increase in the percentage of rooted cuttings in all the examined juniper varieties proved to be D3 dose.

Previous research demonstrated positive influence of hydrophilic polymers on plant growth. Their utilization in agriculture is based mainly on mixing with the soil or medium. The aim of the experiment was to asses the influence of new form of supersorbent application in form of geocomposite consisted of polymer closed inside geotextile on development of Erigeron hybridus hort., Eupatorium purpureum L. and Silene chalcedonica (L.) E. Krause. The first factor of the experiment was utilization of geocomposite, the second one – pine bark mulching. After soaking in water geocomposite was placed in soil and plants were planted above. The growth and flowering of plants were assessed in the term of their most abundant flowering. The experiment documented positive influence of geocomposite on vegetative growth, it is: plant diameter and the number of shoots of all species as well as the height of Eupatorium. It also prompted Eupatorium and Erigeron flowering: plants developed more inflorescences of increased diameter. Pine bark positively determined the diameter of Eupatorium, whereas negatively influenced Silene diameter and number of shoots.

In 1998–2001, 2025 trees-of-heaven were recorded in 647 locations in Wrocław, Lower Silesia, Poland. They grew in a variety of habitats. Most were found in lowor high-density residential areas, commercial areas, and in city’s parks. These habitats were moderately to highly transformed and classified as euhemerobic, mainly β-euhemerobic. The mean level of their hemeroby was 61. This is probably an optimum level of hemeroby for tree-of-heaven growing in the urban environment. Because the highest concentration of the locations, where tree-of-heaven grows, was found in densely developed areas of the urban thermal island, it is considered a thermophilic species adapted to urban conditions. Tree-of-heaven spreads largely spontaneously. It is a pioneer species colonising habitats unsuitable for other trees. Therefore, it is recommended for planting in urban areas, especially those situated in western Poland.
