23. The Role of Fluorinated IL as an Interfacial Agent in P(VDF-CTFE)/Graphene Composite Films

Abstract

The incorporation of graphene into a polymer matrix can endow composites with extended functions. However, it is difficult to well disperse pristine graphene into a polymer matrix in order to obtain polymer nanocomposites due to the lack of functional groups on the surface for bonding with a polymer matrix. Herein, we investigated the role of fluorinated ionic liquid (IL) as a new interfacial agent in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE))/graphene composite films. First, a task-specific IL, perfluorooctyltriphenylphosphonium iodide (IL-C8F13), was synthesized and adsorbed on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for making functional nanofillers which were capable of being incorporated into the P(VDF-CTFE) matrix. The cation structure of IL combined three phenyls (potential &pi, &ndash, &pi, interactions with graphene) and a short fluorinated chain (enhanced miscibility with fluorinated matrix via dipolar interactions) to make a compatible graphene filler and P(VDF-CTFE) matrix at the interface among them. Second, two series of P(VDF-CTFE)/GO-IL and P(VDF-CTFE)/rGO-IL composites with different loading contents were prepared with the goal of providing an understanding of the mechanism of interfacial interactions. This paper investigated the difference in the interaction model between GO with IL and rGO with IL. Subsequently, the interfacial effect of IL on the properties of P(VDF-CTFE)/graphene composites, such as crystallization, chain segmental relaxation behavior, dispersion, and the final dielectric properties will be further studied.

Abstract

This paper describes the effect of the frequency on energy harvesting in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.955Ti0.045O3 single crystals with an Ericsson cycle. At the lowest frequency of 0.01 Hz (which corresponds to the slope for the application of the electric field), the maximum harvested energy was equal to 86 mJ cm-3. With an increase in frequency, the harvested energy demonstrated a nonlinear decrease, and the diminution was particularly rapid at frequencies above the critical frequency of 1 Hz. The inherent mechanism of the frequency effect is discussed in detail. In the present case, the phase transitions due to domain engineering, e.g., R-O during the charge process at low temperature and O-T during the discharging process at high temperature, greatly improved the harvested energy. The study also revealed that various parameters, such as the electric field associated with the phase transition, the polarization relaxation, and polarization variations, influenced the capability of energy harvesting to a certain extent. This capability depended significantly on the electric field frequency. Especially at high frequency, the reduction in the polarization time resulted in an inadequate phase transition, and subsequently gave rise to the coexistence of orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases. This had an adverse effect on the energy harvesting, and consequently, the harvested energy exhibited a decreasing tendency with an increasing electric field. Based on the result of the frequency effect, two asymmetric Ericsson cycles were attempted: an L-H cycle and an H-L cycle. These cycles employed different imposed frequencies at the charge and the discharge of the sample. Both asymmetric cycles agreed well with the performed analysis on the influence of the frequency. The H-L cycle greatly promoted energy harvesting, and its harvested energy reached 106 mJ cm-3, thus corresponding to the most effective energy harvesting cycle for this material. Abstract

In this article, depolarization mechanisms under compressive stress were reported in ferroelectric materials. For this purpose, measurements were carried out at different scale (microscopic and macroscopic). The percentage of switched domains was calculated from x-ray diffraction diagrams for ceramics with rhombohedral symmetry and the polarization was simulated from these data. It has been underlined that depolarization is mainly caused by domain switching (i.e., extrinsic contribution) for both tetragonal and rhombohedral structures. A discussion on long range dipole-dipole is presented based on the assumptions made for polarization simulation. The main thermodynamic driving force for domain switching is thus shown to be only mechanical under compressive stress. As a consequence, tetragonal material is harder than rhombohedral one due to a larger domain switching induced strain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The influence of domain switching on the evolution of macroscopic polarization in the ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)1-xTixO3 material was studied. Domain switching during the application of a compressive stress was evaluated using in situ x-ray diffraction. It was found that stress depolarization was controlled by 90° domain reorientation. Details on domain switching quantification were given for samples with their surface parallel to the polar axis. From x-ray data, the macroscopic polarization versus stress was also simulated, underlying a strong correlation between microscopic parameters and macroscopic properties. This simulation was based on the assumption that the dipolar moment of the unit cell does not change with stress. The x-ray diffraction was established as a viable nondestructive technique for the determination of remnant polarization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

37. Domain Switching and Energy Harvesting Capabilities in Ferroelectric Materials†

Abstract

This paper deals with the understanding of depolarization mechanisms in ferroelectric materials and how to improve energy harvesting by converting thermal or mechanical energy into electrical energy. Depolarization mechanisms caused by temperature were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) to describe the evolution of the domain organization. Polarization variations, constituting the key parameter for energy harvesting, were simulated from the XRD data and explained in terms of domain switching, variation of the dipole moment, and rotation of the dipole. The latter concerned structural transitions induced by an excitation and gave rise to significant nonlinearities in the material properties. Energy harvesting should combine two excitations (e.g., temperature and electric field, or stress and electric field) describing intelligent thermodynamical cycles. Various examples have been given to illustrate the possibilities for harvesting energy.

Abstract

The study of the graphite-lithium-calcium system leads to the formation of three novel intercalation compounds called [alpha], [bêta] and [gamma]. The synthesis of these ternary phases is carried out at 350°C by immersion of a pyrographite platelet in a molten Li-Ca alloy whose composition is judiciously chosen. The presence of lithium in these compounds requires nuclear microprobe analysis in order to determine the elemental composition. The compound possesses a high metal quantity (C/Metal ratio near 1) especially in lithium. The g phase contains a very small lithium amount and its chemical formula is close to CaC6. A structural study allowed to determine the a phase lattice. Along the c-axis, the intercalated sheets are five-layered according to a Li-Ca-Li-Ca-Li sequence that is close to the CaLi2 structure. 7Li NMR confirms these results. The compound contains thicker intercalated sheets that become seven-layered. The in-plane lattice of the g phase corresponds to that of CaC6., L'étude du système graphite-lithium-calcium a permis d'obtenir 3 composés d'intercalation ternaires originaux appelés [alpha], [bêta] et [gamma]. Leur synthèse est réalisée à 350°C par immersion d'une plaquette de pyrographite dans un alliage Li-Ca de composition choisie. La présence de lithium dans ces phases a nécessité l'utilisation de la microsonde nucléaire pour déterminer leur composition élémentaire. La phase [bêta] possède une quantité très importante de métal (rapport C/métal proche de 1) surtout de lithium. La phase [gamma], proche de CaC6, contient, quant à elle, une très faible quantité de lithium. Une étude structurale a permis la détermination de la maille cristallographique de la phase [alpha]. Le feuillet inséré est une pentacouche Li-Ca-Li-Ca-Li qui présente une forte analogie avec la structure de CaLi2, ce qui a été confirmé par résonance magnétique nucléaire du 7Li. La phase [bêta] présente un feuillet intercalé plus épais, qui devient heptacouche. La maille plane de la phase [gamma] correspond à celle de CaC6.
