Abstract

In mid-2019, the controversy regarding South African runner Caster Semenya's eligibility to participate in competitions against other female runners culminated in a Court of Arbitration for Sport judgement. Semenya possessed high endogenous testosterone levels (arguably a performance advantage), secondary to a disorder of sexual development. In this commentary, Aristotelean teleology is used to defend the existence of 'male' and 'female' as discrete categories. It is argued that once the athlete's sex is established, they should be allowed to compete in the category of their sex without obligatory medical treatment. Indeed, other athletes who possess advantageous genetic or phenotypic traits that fall outside of the human norm have been allowed to compete as humans without restraint. In both cases, if an athlete possesses the essential attributes of being a human or being male or female they should be permitted to compete in those respective categories; athletes' eligibilities should not be based upon accidental attributes.

Abstract

Experiments were performed to characterize the structural evolution of the glassy and polycrystalline alkali binary thioborate system xNa2S + (1-x)B2S3 using magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) and by two-dimensional multiple-quantum analysis. The results described the short range order of the fundamental network structures in glass compositions. Moreover, the dominant 11B resonances in glassy samples exhibited similarities with the structural units found in the the polycrystalline compounds.

Abstract

Multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) NMR spectrum of super27A1 via superH cross polarization (CP) was produced. The new technique was applied to the study of a fully hydrated A1POsub4-11 aluminophosphate. The combination of MQMAS and CPMQMAS gave new insights into the sample structure.

Abstract

Data acquisition using the Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) train of π pulses has been recently explored in multiple quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) nuclear magnetic resonance of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei [T. Vosegaard, F. H. Larsen, H. J. Jakobsen, P. D. Ellis, and N. C. Nielsen, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 119, 9055 (1997)]. Significant increase of sensitivity can be obtained by using this technique at the expense of spectral definition, as the spectrum transforms into a manifold of narrow sidebands. A detailed analysis of the CPMG method, with emphasis on the MQMAS experiment, is presented. The MQ-QCPMG-MAS approach is adapted to spin-5/2 nuclei. Several numerical methods of data treatment are shown that allow for improvement of the definition of the sideband envelope, reconstruction of the standard line shape, and improvement of S/N ratio via optimized filtering. Theoretical and experimental estimates of signal enhancement through proper acquisition and processing of MQ-QCPMG-MAS data are given. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is used to study the new aluminophosphate material AIPO4-ZON. The results demonstrate modern solid state NMR, which can reveal the structural details of powdered AIPO4-ZON materials and identify the impurities introduced during the synthesis.

Abstract

A summary of spectral assignments for laser Raman and NMR characterization with spectroscopic studies of representative materials prepared by V2O5-based catalysts is studied. The results indicate that at lower H2O2 and vanadium concentrations, the addition of excess H2O2 increases the duration of the diperoxovanadate stability.

36. Mechanochemistry of the LiBH4–AlCl3System: Structural Characterization of the Products by Solid-State NMR

Abstract

The double-cation metal borohydride, Li4Al3(BH4)13, mechanochemically produced from a 13:3 mixture of lithium borohydride (LiBH4) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3), has a low hydrogen desorption temperature; however, the material’s decomposition is accompanied by a large emission of toxic diborane (B2H6). We found that a decrease of the LiBH4:AlCl3ratio in the starting mixture yields increased amounts of partially chlorinated products that also dehydrogenate at low temperature, but release negligibly small amounts of diborane. Extensive characterization by solid-state NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) found that the 11:3 ratio product maintains the Li4Al3(BH4)13-like structure, with additional Cl–anions substituting for [BH4]–compared to the 13:3 mixture. Further decrease of relative LiBH4concentration in the starting mixture to 9:3 results in a different product composed of tetrahedral [Al(BH4)4]−and [Al(BH4)2Cl2]−complexes, in which two hydrogen atoms of each borohydride group are bridged to aluminum sites. Additionally, SSNMR revealed the covalent character of the Al–H bonds, which is not observed in Li4Al3(BH4)13. These findings suggest that the Al–Cl bonding present in the chlorinated complexes prevents the formation of Al(BH4)3, which is a known intermediate leading to the formation of diborane during thermal dehydrogenation of the nearly chlorine-free Li4Al3(BH4)13.

39. Titanium Catalyzed Solid-State Transformations in LiAlH4 During High- Energy Ball- Milling

Abstract

Mechanical processing of polycrystalline LiAlH4 in the presence of titanium- and iron-based catalysts induces the transformation of LiAlH4 into Li3AlH6, Al and H2 at room temperature. Several catalysts were tested and it was established that their activity gradually decreases from TiCl4 to Fe in the series TiCl4>Al3Ti≫Al22Fe3Ti8>Al3Fe>Fe. The high catalytic activity of TiCl4 has been attributed to microcrystalline intermetallic Al3Ti, which rapidly forms in situ from TiCl4 and LiAlH4 during mechanical processing and then acts as a heterogeneous dehydrogenation catalyst.

Abstract

A method combining multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) with S-observe, I-dephase rotational echo double resonance (REDOR), is presented. The MQ-REDOR technique was used in (super19)F-(super27)A1 spin pairs within a fluorinated aluminophosphate sample. It would be useful for spectral editing and in the study of internuclear distances in complex systems, that involve quadrupolar spins in conditions of high resolution.
