In this work the Coulomb effects (Coulomb correlations) in $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs produced in p + Ni collisions at 24 GeV/$c$, are studied using experimental $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair distributions in $Q$, the relative momentum in the pair center of mass system (c.m.s), and its projections $Q_L$ (longitudinal component) and $Q_t$ (transverse component) relative to the pair direction in the laboratory system (l.s.). The $Q$, $Q_L$, and $Q_t$ distributions of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} in the c.m.s. have been simulated assuming they are described by the phase space modified by the known point-like Coulomb correlation function $A_C(Q)$, corrected for small effects due to the nonpoint-like pair production and the strong two-pion interaction. The same distributions of {\sl non-Coulomb pairs} have been simulated according to the phase space, but without $A_C(Q)$. It is shown that the number of {\sl Coulomb pairs} in all $Q_t$ intervals, including the small $Q_t$ (small opening angles $\theta$ in the l.s.) is calculated with the theoretical precision better than 2\%. The comparison of the simulated and experimental numbers of {\sl Coulomb pairs} at small $Q_t$ allows us to check and correct the detection efficiency for the pairs with small $\theta$ (0.06 mrad and smaller). It is shown that {\sl Coulomb pairs} can be used as a new physical tool to check and correct the quality of the simulated events. The special property of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} is the possibility of checking and correcting the detection efficiency, especially for the pairs with small opening angles.

For the first time Lu$_2$S$_3$ (undoped and Pr-doped) single crystals were successfully grown from melt using micro-pulling-down (mPD) technique. Customization of halide mPD apparatus allowed us to grow rod-shaped (\O 2 mm and length around 20 mm) crystals of Lu$_2$S$_3$ with high melting temperature (~1750 $^\circ$C). X-ray powder diffraction revealed that the grown crystals exhibit the {\epsilon}-Lu$_2$S$_3$ crystal structure ($\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$ type, space group R-3c). Optical and scintillation properties of both the undoped and Pr$^{3+}$ doped Lu$_2$S$_3$ were investigated. Fast 5d-4f Pr$^{3+}$ luminescence was observed in both photoluminescence and radioluminescence spectra. The presented technology is an effective tool for the exploration of a large family of high-melting sulfides. The concept of "effective mass" is frequently used for the simplification of complex lumped parameter systems (discrete dynamical systems) as well as materials that have complicated microstructural features. From the perspective of wave propagation, it is claimed that for some bodies described as metamaterials, the corresponding "effective mass" can be frequency dependent, negative or it may not even be a scalar quantity. The procedure has even led some authors to suggest that Newton's second law needs to be modified within the context of classical continuum mechanics. Such absurd physical conclusions are a consequence of appealing to the notion of "effective mass" with a preconception for the constitutive structure of the metamaterial and using a correct mathematical procedure. We show that such unreasonable physical conclusions would not arise if we were to use the appropriate "effective constitutive relation" for the metamaterial, rather than use the concept of "effective mass" with an incorrect predetermined constitutive relation.

Blue phosphorene -- two-dimensional, hexagonal-structured, semiconducting phosphorus -- has gained attention as it is considered easier to synthesize on metal surfaces than its allotrope, black phosphorene. Recent studies report different structures of phosphorene, for example, on Cu(111), but the underlying mechanisms of their formation are not known. Here, using a combination of in situ ultrahigh vacuum low-energy electron microscopy and in vacuo scanning tunneling microscopy, we determine the time-evolution of the surface structure and morphology during the deposition of phosphorus on single-crystalline Cu(111). We find that during early stages of deposition, phosphorus intermixes with Cu, resulting in copper phosphide structures. With increasing surface concentration of phosphorus, the phosphide phase disappears and a blue phosphorene layer forms, followed by self-assembly of highly ordered phosphorus clusters that eventually grow into multilayer islands. We attribute the unexpected transformation of stable phosphide to a phosphorene layer, and the previously unreported multilayer growth, to the presence of a large concentration of P2 dimers on the surface. Our results constitute direct evidence for a new growth mode leading to a phosphorene layer via an intermediary phase, which could underpin the growth of other 2D materials on strongly interacting substrates., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

This paper addresses the problem of designing reliable prediction models that abstain from predictions when faced with uncertain or out-of-distribution samples - a recently proposed problem known as Selective Classification in the presence of Out-of-Distribution data (SCOD). We make three key contributions to SCOD. Firstly, we demonstrate that the optimal SCOD strategy involves a Bayes classifier for in-distribution (ID) data and a selector represented as a stochastic linear classifier in a 2D space, using i) the conditional risk of the ID classifier, and ii) the likelihood ratio of ID and out-of-distribution (OOD) data as input. This contrasts with suboptimal strategies from current OOD detection methods and the Softmax Information Retaining Combination (SIRC), specifically developed for SCOD. Secondly, we establish that in a distribution-free setting, the SCOD problem is not Probably Approximately Correct learnable when relying solely on an ID data sample. Third, we introduce POSCOD, a simple method for learning a plugin estimate of the optimal SCOD strategy from both an ID data sample and an unlabeled mixture of ID and OOD data. Our empirical results confirm the theoretical findings and demonstrate that our proposed method, POSCOD, out performs existing OOD methods in effectively addressing the SCOD problem.

The optimal prediction strategy for out-of-distribution (OOD) setups is a fundamental question in machine learning. In this paper, we address this question and present several contributions. We propose three reject option models for OOD setups: the Cost-based model, the Bounded TPR-FPR model, and the Bounded Precision-Recall model. These models extend the standard reject option models used in non-OOD setups and define the notion of an optimal OOD selective classifier. We establish that all the proposed models, despite their different formulations, share a common class of optimal strategies. Motivated by the optimal strategy, we introduce double-score OOD methods that leverage uncertainty scores from two chosen OOD detectors: one focused on OOD/ID discrimination and the other on misclassification detection. The experimental results consistently demonstrate the superior performance of this simple strategy compared to state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we propose novel evaluation metrics derived from the definition of the optimal strategy under the proposed OOD rejection models. These new metrics provide a comprehensive and reliable assessment of OOD methods without the deficiencies observed in existing evaluation approaches.

We analyse a numerical scheme for a system arising from a novel description of the standard elastic--perfectly plastic response. The elastic--perfectly plastic response is described via rate-type equations that do not make use of the standard elastic-plastic decomposition, and the model does not require the use of variational inequalities. Furthermore, the model naturally includes the evolution equation for temperature. We present a low order discretisation based on the finite element method. Under certain restrictions on the mesh we subsequently prove the existence of discrete solutions, and we discuss the stability properties of the numerical scheme. The analysis is supplemented with computational examples.

The Mullins effect is a common name for a family of intriguing inelastic responses of various solid materials, in particular filled rubbers. Given the importance of the Mullins effect, there have been many attempts to develop mathematical models describing the effect. However, most of available models focus exclusively on the mechanical response, and are restricted to the idealised isothermal setting. We lift the restriction to isothermal processes, and we propose a full thermodynamic framework for a class of phenomenological models of the Mullins effect. In particular, we identify energy storage mechanisms (Helmholtz free energy) and entropy production mechanisms that on the level of stress--strain relation lead to the idealised Mullins effect or to the Mullins effect with permanent strain. The models constructed within the proposed framework can be used in the modelling of fully coupled thermo-mechanical processes, and the models are guaranteed to be consistent with the laws of thermodynamics., Comment: Several misprints have been corrected

We present self-assembly routes of metamagnetic FeRh nanoisland arrays using sputter deposition processing. Controlling the growth parameters and epitaxy allows tuning the size and shape of the FeRh nanoislands. While the phase transition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order is largely suppressed in nanoislands formed on oxide substrates via thermodynamic nucleation, we find that metamagnetism is largely preserved in nanomagnet arrays formed through solid-state dewetting. This behavior is strongly dependent on the resulting crystal faceting of the nanoislands, which is characteristic of each assembly route. Comparing the calculated surface energies for each magnetic phase of the nanoislands reveals that metamagnetism can be suppressed or allowed by specific geometrical configurations of the facets. Furthermore, we find that the spatial confinement leads to very pronounced supercooling and the absence of phase separation in the nanoislands. Finally, the supported nanomagnets are chemically etched away from the substrates to inspect the phase transition properties of self-standing nanoparticles. We demonstrate that solid-state dewetting is a feasible and scalable way to obtain supported and free-standing FeRh nanomagnets with preserved metamagnetism., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

The DIRAC experiment at CERN investigated in the reaction $\rm{p}(24~\rm{GeV}/c) + Ni$ the particle pairs $K^+K^-, \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $p \bar{p}$ with relative momentum $Q$ in the pair system less than 100 MeV/c. Because of background influence studies, DIRAC explored three subsamples of $K^+K^-$ pairs, obtained by subtracting -- using time-of-flight (TOF) technique -- background from initial $Q$ distributions with $K^+K^-$ sample fractions more than 70\%, 50\% and 30\%. The corresponding pair distributions in $Q$ and in its longitudinal projection $Q_L$ were analyzed first in a Coulomb model, which takes into account only Coulomb final state interaction (FSI) and assuming point-like pair production. This Coulomb model analysis leads to a $K^+K^-$ yield increase of about four at $Q_L=0.5$ MeV/c compared to 100 MeV/c. In order to study contributions from strong interaction, a second more sophisticated model was applied, considering besides Coulomb FSI also strong FSI via the resonances $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ and a variable distance $r^*$ between the produced $K$ mesons. This analysis was based on three different parameter sets for the pair production. For the 70\% subsample and with best parameters, $3680\pm 370$ $K^+K^-$ pairs was found to be compared to $3900\pm 410$ $K^+K^-$ extracted by means of the Coulomb model. Knowing the efficiency of the TOF cut for background suppression, the total number of detected $K^+K^-$ pairs was evaluated to be around $40000\pm 10\%$, which agrees with the result from the 30\% subsample. The $K^+K^-$ pair number in the 50\% subsample differs from the two other values by about three standard deviations, confirming -- as discussed in the paper -- that experimental data in this subsample is less reliable.

Finding the best K-sparse approximation of a signal in a redundant dictionary is an NP-hard problem. Suboptimal greedy matching pursuit (MP) algorithms are generally used for this task. In this work, we present an acceleration technique and an implementation of the matching pursuit algorithm acting on a multi-Gabor dictionary, i.e., a concatenation of several Gabor-type time-frequency dictionaries, each of which consisting of translations and modulations of a possibly different window and time and frequency shift parameters. The technique is based on pre-computing and thresholding inner products between atoms and on updating the residual directly in the coefficient domain, i.e., without the round-trip to the signal domain. Since the proposed acceleration technique involves an approximate update step, we provide theoretical and experimental results illustrating the convergence of the resulting algorithm. The implementation is written in C (compatible with C99 and C++11) and we also provide Matlab and GNU Octave interfaces. For some settings, the implementation is up to 70 times faster than the standard Matching Pursuit Toolkit (MPTK).

Signal reconstruction from magnitude-only measurements presents a long-standing problem in signal processing. In this contribution, we propose a phase (re)construction method for filter banks with uniform decimation and controlled frequency variation. The suggested procedure extends the recently introduced phase-gradient heap integration and relies on a phase-magnitude relationship for filter bank coefficients obtained from Gaussian filters. Admissible filter banks are modeled as the discretization of certain generalized translation-invariant systems, for which we derive the phase-magnitude relationship explicitly. The implementation for discrete signals is described and the performance of the algorithm is evaluated on a range of real and synthetic signals.

The phase vocoder (PV) is a widely spread technique for processing audio signals. It employs a short-time Fourier transform (STFT) analysis-modify-synthesis loop and is typically used for time-scaling of signals by means of using different time steps for STFT analysis and synthesis. The main challenge of PV used for that purpose is the correction of the STFT phase. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for phase correction based on phase gradient estimation and its integration. The method does not require explicit peak picking and tracking nor does it require detection of transients and their separate treatment. Yet, the method does not suffer from the typical phase vocoder artifacts even for extreme time stretching factors.

We investigate the classical problem of motion of a mathematical pendulum with an oscillating pivot. This simple mechanical setting is frequently used as the prime example of a system exhibiting the parametric resonance phenomenon, which manifests itself by surprising stabilisation/destabilisation effects. In the classical case the pivot oscillations are described by a cosine wave, and the corresponding stability analysis requires one to investigate the behaviour of solutions to the Mathieu equation. This is not a straightforward procedure, and it does not lead to exact and simple analytical results expressed in terms of elementary functions. Consequently, the explanation of the parametric resonance phenomenon can be in this case obscured by the relatively involved technical calculations. We show that the stability analysis is much easier if one considers the pivot motion described by a non-smooth function -- a triangular or a nearly rectangular wave. The non-smooth pivot motion leads to the presence of singularities (Dirac distributions) in the corresponding Mathieu type equation, which seemingly further complicates the analysis. Fortunately, this is only a minor technical difficulty. Once the mathematical setting for the non-smooth forcing is settled down, the corresponding stability diagram is indeed straightforward to obtain, and the stability boundaries are, unlike in the classical case, given in terms of simple analytical formulae involving only elementary functions.

Viscoelastic fluids are non-Newtonian fluids that exhibit both "viscous" and "elastic" characteristics in virtue of mechanisms to store energy and produce entropy. Usually the energy storage properties of such fluids are modelled using the same concepts as in the classical theory of nonlinear solids. Recently new models for elastic solids have been successfully developed by appealing to implicit constitutive relations, and these new models offer a different perspective to the old topic of elastic response of materials. In particular, a sub-class of implicit constitutive relations, namely relations wherein the left Cauchy-Green tensor is expressed as a function of stress is of interest. We show how to use this new perspective it the development of mathematical models for viscoelastic fluids, and we provide a discussion of the thermodynamic underpinnings of such models. We focus on the use of Gibbs free energy instead of the Helmholtz free energy, and using the standard Giesekus/Oldroyd-B models, we show how the alternative approach works in the case of well-known models. The proposed approach is straightforward to generalise to more complex setting wherein the classical approach might be impractical of even inapplicable.

It is well-known that one-tape Turing machines working in linear time are no more powerful than finite automata, namely they recognize exactly the class of regular languages. We prove that it is not decidable if a one-tape machine works in linear time, even if it is deterministic and restricted to use only the portion of the tape which initially contains the input. This motivates the introduction of a constructive variant of one-tape machines, called weight-reducing machine, and the investigation of its properties. We focus on the deterministic case. In particular, we show that, paying a polynomial size increase only, each weight-reducing machine can be turned into a halting one that works in linear time. Furthermore each weight-reducing machine can be converted into equivalent nondeterministic and deterministic finite automata by paying exponential and doubly-exponential increase in size, respectively. These costs cannot be reduced in general.

In 1978 Sakoda and Sipser raised the question of the cost, in terms of size of representations, of the transformation of two-way and one-way nondeterministic automata into equivalent two-way deterministic automata. Despite all the attempts, the question has been answered only for particular cases (e.g., restrictions of the class of simulated automata or of the class of simulating automata). However the problem remains open in the general case, the best-known upper bound being exponential. We present a new approach in which unrestricted nondeterministic finite automata are simulated by deterministic models extending two-way deterministic finite automata, paying a polynomial increase of size only. Indeed, we study the costs of the conversions of nondeterministic finite automata into some variants of one-tape deterministic Turing machines working in linear time, namely Hennie machines, weight-reducing Turing machines, and weight-reducing Hennie machines. All these variants are known to share the same computational power: they characterize the class of regular languages.

In classification with a reject option, the classifier is allowed in uncertain cases to abstain from prediction. The classical cost-based model of a reject option classifier requires the cost of rejection to be defined explicitly. An alternative bounded-improvement model, avoiding the notion of the reject cost, seeks for a classifier with a guaranteed selective risk and maximal cover. We coin a symmetric definition, the bounded-coverage model, which seeks for a classifier with minimal selective risk and guaranteed coverage. We prove that despite their different formulations the three rejection models lead to the same prediction strategy: a Bayes classifier endowed with a randomized Bayes selection function. We define a notion of a proper uncertainty score as a scalar summary of prediction uncertainty sufficient to construct the randomized Bayes selection function. We propose two algorithms to learn the proper uncertainty score from examples for an arbitrary black-box classifier. We prove that both algorithms provide Fisher consistent estimates of the proper uncertainty score and we demonstrate their efficiency on different prediction problems including classification, ordinal regression and structured output classification.

Using the finite element method we quantitatively analyse temperature field evolution in a viscoelastic solid undergoing a loading--unloading process. In particular we investigate the temperature field inside a Kelvin--Voigt type viscoelastic body with a thin cutout. We find that the viscosity significantly contributes to the temperature field changes, and that the temperature field changes initiated by the loading--unloading process are strongly concentrated at the tip of the thin cutout. The predicted temperature field qualitatively corresponds to the temperature field observed in experiments focused on simultaneous heat and strain measurements at the crack tip inside materials such as the filled rubber.

We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploited in the mathematical analysis of the governing equations. In particular, the definition of weak solution is motivated by the thermodynamic basis of the model. The extra stress tensor describing the elastic response of the fluid is in our case purely spherical, which is a simplification from the physical point of view. The model nevertheless exhibits features that require novel mathematical ideas in order to deal with the technically complex structure of the associated internal energy and the more complicated forms of the corresponding entropy and energy fluxes. The paper provides the first rigorous proof of the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to the governing equations for \emph{coupled thermo-mechanical processes} in viscoelastic rate-type fluids.

We investigate finite amplitude stability of spatially inhomogeneous steady state of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid which occupies a mechanically isolated vessel with walls kept at spatially non-uniform temperature. For a wide class of incompressible viscoelastic models including the Oldroyd-B model, the Giesekus model, the FENE-P model, the Johnson--Segalman model, and the Phan--Thien--Tanner model we prove that the steady state is stable subject to any finite perturbation., Comment: This work extends our previous work "Unconditional finite amplitude stability of a fluid in a mechanically isolated vessel with spatially non-uniform wall temperature" (arXiv:1905.09394) to the case of viscoelastic rate-type fluids

Graphene is a 2D material that displays excellent electronic transport properties with prospective applications in many fields. Inducing and controlling magnetism in the graphene layer, for instance by proximity of magnetic materials, may enable its utilization in spintronic devices. This paper presents fabrication and detailed characterization of single-layer graphene formed on the surface of epitaxial FeRh thin films. The magnetic state of the FeRh surface can be controlled by temperature, magnetic field or strain due to interconnected order parameters. Characterization of graphene layers by X-ray Photoemission and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Low-Energy Ion Scattering, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, and Low-Energy Electron Microscopy shows that graphene is single-layer, polycrystalline and covers more than 97% of the substrate. Graphene displays several preferential orientations on the FeRh(001) surface with unit vectors of graphene rotated by 30{\deg}, 15{\deg}, 11{\deg}, and 19{\deg} with respect to FeRh substrate unit vectors. In addition, the graphene layer is capable to protect the films from oxidation when exposed to air for several months. Therefore, it can be also used as a protective layer during fabrication of magnetic elements or as an atomically thin spacer, which enables incorporation of switchable magnetic layers within stacks of 2D materials in advanced devices.

The interest in Fe-chalcogenide unconventional superconductors is intense after the critical temperature of FeSe was reported enhanced by more than one order of magnitude in the monolayer limit at the interface to an insulating oxide substrate. In heterostructures comprising interfaces of FeSe with topological insulators, additional interesting physical phenomena is predicted to arise e.g. in form of {\it topological superconductivity}. So far superconductive properties of Fe-chalcogenide monolayers were mostly studied by local scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, which can detect pseudo-gaps in the density of states as an indicator for Cooper pairing. Direct macroscopic transport properties which can prove or falsify a superconducting phase were rarely reported due to the difficulty to grow films with homogeneous material properties. Here we report on a promising growth method to fabricate continuous carpets of monolayer thick FeSe on molecular beam epitaxy grown Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator thin films. In contrast to previous works using atomically flat cleaved bulk Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystal surfaces we observe a strong influence of the high step-edge density (terrace width about 10~nm) on MBE-grown Bi$_2$Se$_3$ substrates, which significantly promotes the growth of coalescing FeSe domains with small tetragonal crystal distortion without compromising the underlying Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystal structure., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Implicit rate-type constitutive relations utilizing discontinuous functions provide a novel approach to the purely phenomenological description of the inelastic response of solids undergoing finite deformation. However, this type of constitutive relations has been so far considered only in the purely mechanical setting, and the complete thermodynamic basis is largely missing. We address this issue, and we develop a thermodynamic basis for such constitutive relations. In particular, we focus on the thermodynamic basis for the classical elastic--perfectly plastic response, but the framework is flexible enough to describe another types of inelastic response as well., Comment: We have added a new section where we discuss the relation between the proposed approach and some standard concepts in the plasticity theory

(Block-)coordinate minimization is an iterative optimization method which in every iteration finds a global minimum of the objective over a variable or a subset of variables, while keeping the remaining variables constant. While for some problems, coordinate minimization converges to a global minimum (e.g., convex differentiable objective), for general (non-differentiable) convex problems this may not be the case. Despite this drawback, (block-)coordinate minimization can be an acceptable option for large-scale non-differentiable convex problems; an example is methods to solve the linear programming relaxation of the discrete energy minimization problem (MAP inference in graphical models). When block-coordinate minimization is applied to a general convex problem, in every iteration the minimizer over the current coordinate block need not be unique and therefore a single minimizer must be chosen. We propose that this minimizer be chosen from the relative interior of the set of all minimizers over the current block. We show that this rule is not worse, in a certain precise sense, than any other rule.

We obtain a characterization of all wavelets leading to analytic wavelet transforms (WT). The characterization is obtained as a by-product of the theoretical foundations of a new method for wavelet phase reconstruction from magnitude-only coefficients. The cornerstone of our analysis is an expression of the partial derivatives of the continuous WT, which results in phase-magnitude relationships similar to the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) setting and valid for the generalized family of Cauchy wavelets. We show that the existence of such relations is equivalent to analyticity of the WT up to a multiplicative weight and a scaling of the mother wavelet. The implementation of the new phaseless reconstruction method is considered in detail and compared to previous methods. It is shown that the proposed method provides significant performance gains and a great flexibility regarding accuracy versus complexity. Additionally, we discuss the relation between scalogram reassignment operators and the wavelet transform phase gradient and present an observation on the phase around zeros of the WT.

A fluid occupying a mechanically isolated vessel with walls kept at spatially non-uniform temperature is in the long run expected to reach the spatially inhomogeneous steady state. Irrespective of the initial conditions the velocity field is expected to vanish, and the temperature field is expected to be fully determined by the steady heat equation. This simple observation is however difficult to prove using the corresponding governing equations. The main difficulties are the presence of the dissipative heating term in the evolution equation for temperature and the lack of control on the heat fluxes through the boundary. Using thermodynamically based arguments, it is shown that these difficulties in the proof can be overcome, and it is proved that the velocity and temperature perturbations to the steady state actually vanish as the time goes to infinity., Comment: Final version of the manuscript. We present a thermodynamically based approach to the design of models for viscoelastic fluids with stress diffusion effect. In particular, we show how to add a stress diffusion term to some standard viscoelastic rate-type models (Giesekus, FENE-P, Johnson--Segalman, Phan-Thien--Tanner and Bautista--Manero--Puig) so that the resulting models with the added stress diffusion term are thermodynamically consistent in the sense that they obey the first and the second law of thermodynamics. We point out the potential applications of the provided thermodynamical background in the study of flows of fluids described by the proposed models., Comment: Correction of a misprint in the entropy production specification of the Giesekus model

Iron oxides are among the most abundant compounds on Earth and have consequently been studied and used extensively in industrial processes. Despite these efforts, concrete understanding of some of their surface phase structures has remained elusive, in particular the oxidized ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3(0001)$ hematite surface. We detail an optimized recipe to produce this phase over the entire hematite surface and study the geometrical parameters and composition of its complex structure by means of atomically resolved microscopy, electron diffraction and surface-sensitive spectroscopies. We conclude that the oxidized ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3(0001)$ surface is terminated by a two-dimensional iron oxide with structure, lattice parameters, and orientation different from the bulk substrate. Using total-energy density functional theory for simulation of a large-scale atomic model, we identify the structure of the surface layer as antiferromagnetic, conductive $1T-FeO_2$ attached on half-metal terminated bulk. The model succeeds in reproducing the characteristic modulations observed in the atomically resolved images and electron diffraction patterns.

The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogen-like $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96~mm and got broken up in the 2.1~\textmu{}m thick platinum foil. Analysing the observed number of atomic pairs, $n_A^L= \left.436^{+157}_{-61}\right|_\mathrm{tot}$, the lifetime of the 2$p$ state is found to be ${\tau_{2p}=(\left.0.45^{+1.08}_{-0.30}\right|_\mathrm{tot}) \cdot10^{-11}}$s, not contradicting the corresponding QED $2p$ state lifetime ${\tau_{2p}^\mathrm{QED}=1.17 \cdot 10^{-11}}$s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ground state lifetime $\tau=(\left.3.15^{+0.28}_{-0.26}\right|_\mathrm{tot})\cdot 10^{-15}$s. Further studies of long-lived $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms will allow to measure energy differences between $p$ and $s$ atomic states and so to determine $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Methods based on sparse representation have found great use in the recovery of audio signals degraded by clipping. The state of the art in declipping has been achieved by the SPADE algorithm by Kiti\'c et. al. (LVA/ICA2015). Our recent study (LVA/ICA2018) has shown that although the original S-SPADE can be improved such that it converges significantly faster than the A-SPADE, the restoration quality is significantly worse. In the present paper, we propose a new version of S-SPADE. Experiments show that the novel version of S-SPADE outperforms its old version in terms of restoration quality, and that it is comparable with the A-SPADE while being even slightly faster than A-SPADE.

We propose a numerical scheme for simulation of transient flows of incompressible non-Newtonian fluids characterised by a non-monotone relation between the symmetric part of the velocity gradient (shear rate) and the Cauchy stress tensor (shear stress). The main difficulty in dealing with the governing equations for flows of such fluids is that the non-monotone constitutive relation allows several values of the stress to be associated with the same value of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient. This issue is handled via a reformulation of the governing equations. The equations are reformulated as a system for the triple pressure-velocity-apparent viscosity, where the apparent viscosity is given by a scalar implicit equation. We prove that the proposed numerical scheme has---on the discrete level---a solution, and using the proposed scheme we numerically solve several flow problems.

Using a Lyapunov type functional constructed on the basis of thermodynamical arguments we investigate the finite amplitude stability of internal steady flows of viscoelastic fluids described by the Giesekus model. Using the functional we derive bounds on the Reynolds and the Weissenberg number that guarantee the unconditional asymptotic stability of the corresponding steady internal flow, wherein the distance between the steady flow field and the perturbed flow field is measured with the help of the Bures--Wasserstein distance between positive definite matrices. The state of the art in audio declipping has currently been achieved by SPADE (SParse Audio DEclipper) algorithm by Kiti\'c et al. Until now, the synthesis/sparse variant, S-SPADE, has been considered significantly slower than its analysis/cosparse counterpart, A-SPADE. It turns out that the opposite is true: by exploiting a recent projection lemma, individual iterations of both algorithms can be made equally computationally expensive, while S-SPADE tends to require considerably fewer iterations to converge. In this paper, the two algorithms are compared across a range of parameters such as the window length, window overlap and redundancy of the transform. The experiments show that although S-SPADE typically converges faster, the average performance in terms of restoration quality is not superior to A-SPADE.

We study the motion of vitreous humour in a deforming eyeball. From the mechanical and computational perspective this is a task to solve a fluid-structure interaction problem between a complex viscoelastic fluid (vitreour humour) and a nonlinear elastic solid (sclera and lens). We propose a numerical methodology capable of handling the fluid-structure interaction problem, and we demonstrate its applicability via solving the corresponding governing equations in a realistic geometrical setting and for realistic parameter values. It is shown that the choice of the rheological model for the vitreous humour has a negligible influence on the overall flow pattern in the domain of interest, whilst it is has a significant impact on the mechanical stress distribution in the domain of interest.

Thermodynamical arguments are known to be useful in the construction of physically motivated Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear stability analysis of spatially homogeneous equilibrium steady states in thermodynamically isolated systems. Unfortunately, the limitation to thermodynamically isolated systems is essential, and standard arguments are not applicable even for some very simple thermodynamically open systems. On the other hand, the nonlinear stability of thermodynamically open systems is usually investigated using the so-called energy method. Unfortunately, the designation "energy method" is clearly a misnomer. The mathematical quantity that is traditionally referred to as the "energy" is by no means linked to the energy in the physical sense of the word. Consequently, it would seem that genuine thermodynamical concepts are of no use in the nonlinear stability analysis of thermodynamically open systems. We show that this is not true. In particular, we propose a construction that in the case of simple heat conduction problem leads to a physically well-motivated Lyapunov functional, which effectively replaces the artificial Lyapunov functional used in the standard energy method. We establish the long-time existence of large-data weak solutions to a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The system of interest governs the motion of non-Newtonian fluids described by a simplified viscoelastic rate-type model with a stress-diffusion term. The simplified model shares many qualitative features with more complex viscoelastic rate-type models that are frequently used in the modeling of fluids with complicated microstructure. As such, the simplified model provides important preliminary insight into the mathematical properties of these more complex and practically relevant models of non-Newtonian fluids. The simplified model that is analyzed from the mathematical perspective is shown to be thermodynamically consistent, and we extensively comment on the interplay between the thermodynamical background of the model and the mathematical analysis of the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem.

After having announced the statistically significant observation (5.6~$\sigma$) of the new exotic $\pi K$ atom, the DIRAC experiment at the CERN proton synchrotron presents the measurement of the corresponding atom lifetime, based on the full $\pi K$ data sample: $\tau = (5.5^{+5.0}_{-2.8}) \cdot 10^{-15}s$. By means of a precise relation ($<1\%$) between atom lifetime and scattering length, the following value for the S-wave isospin-odd $\pi K$ scattering length $a_0^{-}~=~\frac{1}{3}(a_{1/2}-a_{3/2})$ has been derived: $\left|a_0^-\right| = (0.072^{+0.031}_{-0.020}) M_{\pi}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

We propose thermodynamically consistent models for viscoelastic fluids with a stress diffusion term. In particular, we derive variants of compressible/incompressible Maxwell/Oldroyd-B models with a stress diffusion term in the evolution equation for the extra stress tensor. It is shown that the stress diffusion term can be interpreted either as a consequence of a nonlocal energy storage mechanism or as a consequence of a nonlocal entropy production mechanism, while different interpretations of the stress diffusion mechanism lead to different evolution equations for the temperature. The benefits of the knowledge of the thermodynamical background of the derived models are documented in the study of nonlinear stability of equilibrium rest states. We study the dynamics of small perturbations to the rest state of a viscoelastic rate type fluid with temperature dependent material parameters. We show that if the material parameters are chosen appropriately, then the quiescent state of the fluid filling an isolated (mechanically, thermally) vessel is a stable state. The outlined analysis explicitly documents the importance of thermodynamic analysis in the development of advanced models for complex fluids.
