For decades, conventional amour shield is mainly oriented on metallic materials which are today well-known. Since the use of non conventional threats as IEDs, performances of those protections are required to be upgraded. The expected improvements that manufacturers are looking for are mainly oriented to the weight reduction which is the key parameter to reduce the fuel consumption, increase the payload, and offer more manoeuvrability to vehicles [1]. However, the difficulty is to reduce as cautiously as possible the total mass of the protection solution while ensuring the safety of the vehicle. One of the possible solutions is to use new combinations of materials, able to be more efficient against new threats and lighter than the traditional steel armour. It is in this context that the combination between some well-known ballistic alloys and textile composite material appear as a high potential solution for armour plated protection. Indeed, used as a backing, textile composite material present some interesting properties such as a very low density compared with steel and good behaviour in term of ballistic efficiency. This study proposes to test and compare the behaviour and efficiency of three different textile composite backings.

The article discusses a study which investigated the prevalence of infectious agents in honey bees in western France. Topics covered include the drastic decline in the pollinating insect population, the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods in quantifying sample contents and the high prevalence of infectious agents found in terms of colonies and of apiaries. Also mentioned is the assessment of the survival of the colonies after the wintering season.

The purpose of this study was to compare levels of gross motor (GM) and fine motor (FM) development in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and to compare their levels ofGMand FM development with children with developmental delay (DD) without ASD. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a physiological marker of brain plasticity before and after an intensive body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) program in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Six ambulatory children (four males, two females; mean age 10y 6mo, age range 6-14y) with spastic CP (four hemiplegia, two asymmetric diplegia, all Gross Motor Function Classification System Level I) received BWSTT twice daily for 2 weeks. All children tolerated therapy; only one therapy session was aborted due to fatigue. With training, over ground mean walking speed increased from 1.47 to 1.66m/s (p=0.035). There was no change in distance walked for 6 minutes (pre-: 451m; post-: 458m;p 0.851). In three children, reliable fMRIs were taken of cortical activation pre- and post-intervention. Post-intervention increases in cortical activation during ankle dorsiflexion were observed in all three children. This study demonstrates that children with CP between 6 and 14 years of age can tolerate intensive locomotor training and, with appropriate modifications, can complete an fMRI series. A major sensory processing disorder that may exist in infants and young children is increased vulnerability to sensory input, or sensory defensiveness. The Sensory Rating Scale for Infants and Young Children (SRS) was developed as a parent report measure that can be used to identify and quantify sensory responsiveness, including sensory defensive behaviors, in the birth to 3-year-old population. The SRS was administered to the parents of 120 normal children to provide data on internal consistency and intrarater and interrater reliability of the tool. Correlation coefficients and percentages of agreement for clinically important information were found to be high. The SRS appears useful as a clinical tool to assess sensory responsiveness in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Air pollution has been classified as a human carcinogen based largely on findings for respiratory cancers. Emerging, but limited, evidence suggests that it increases the risk of breast cancer, particularly among younger women. We characterized associations between residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and breast cancer. Analyses were performed using data collected in the Ontario Environmental Health Study (OEHS)., Methods: The OEHS, a population-based case-control study, identified incident cases of breast cancer in Ontario, Canada among women aged 18-45 between 2013 and 2015. A total of 465 pathologically confirmed primary breast cancer cases were identified from the Ontario Cancer Registry, while 242 population-based controls were recruited using random-digit dialing. Self-reported questionnaires were used to collect risk factor data and residential histories. Land-use regression and remote-sensing estimates of NO 2 and PM 2.5, respectively, were assigned to the residential addresses at interview, five years earlier, and at menarche. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and their 95 % confidence intervals (CI) in relation to an interquartile range (IQR) increase in air pollution, adjusting for possible confounders., Results: PM 2.5 and NO 2 were positively correlated with each other (r = 0.57). An IQR increase of PM 2.5 (1.9 µg/m 3 ) and NO 2 (6.6 ppb) at interview residence were associated with higher odds of breast cancer and the adjusted ORs and 95 % CIs were 1.37 (95 % CI = 0.98-1.91) and 2.33 (95 % CI = 1.53-3.53), respectively. An increased odds of breast cancer was observed with an IQR increase in NO 2 at residence five years earlier (OR = 2.16, 95 % CI: 1.41-3.31), while no association was observed with PM 2.5 (OR = 0.96, 95 % CI 0.64-1.42)., Conclusions: Our findings support the hypothesis that exposure to ambient air pollution, especially those from traffic sources (i.e., NO 2 ), increases the risk of breast cancer in young women., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare the following financial interests/personal relationships which may be considered as potential competing interests: Paul J. Background: While genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors partially elucidate the incidence of breast cancer, emerging research has underscored the potential contribution of air pollution. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are of particular concern due to endocrine-disrupting properties and their carcinogenetic effect., Objective: To identify distinct long term trajectories of exposure to PCB153 and BaP, and estimate their associations with breast cancer risk., Methods: We used data from the XENAIR case-control study, nested within the ongoing prospective French E3N cohort which enrolled 98,995 women aged 40-65 years in 1990-1991. Cases were incident cases of primary invasive breast cancer diagnosed from cohort entry to 2011. Controls were randomly selected by incidence density sampling, and individually matched to cases on delay since cohort entry, and date, age, department of residence, and menopausal status at cohort entry. Annual mean outdoor PCB153 and BaP concentrations at residential addresses from 1990 to 2011 were estimated using the CHIMERE chemistry-transport model. Latent class mixed models were used to identify profiles of exposure trajectories from cohort entry to the index date, and conditional logistic regression to estimate their association with the odds of breast cancer., Results: 5058 cases and 5059 controls contributed to the analysis. Five profiles of trajectories of PCB153 exposure were identified. The class with the highest PCB153 concentrations had a 69% increased odds of breast cancer compared to the class with the lowest concentrations (95% CI 1.08, 2.64), after adjustment for education and matching factors. The association between identified BaP trajectories and breast cancer was weaker and suffered from large CI., Conclusions: Our results support an association between long term exposure to PCB153 and the risk of breast cancer, and encourage further studies to account for lifetime exposure to persistent organic pollutants., (© 2024. Introduction and Objectives: Diagnosis, management, and surgical decision-making in children and adults with congenital heart disease are largely based on echocardiography findings. A recent development in cardiac imaging is fusion of different imaging modalities. Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of computed tomography (CT) and 3-dimensional (3D) transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) fusion in children and adults with congenital heart disease., Methods: We prospectively included 14 patients, 13 of whom had congenital heart disease, and who underwent both CT and 3D TTE as part of their usual follow-up. We described the steps required to complete the fusion process (alignment, landmarks, and superimposition), navigation, and image evaluation., Results: Median age was 9.5 [2.7-15.7] years, 57% were male, and median body surface area was 0.9 m 2 [0.6-1.7]. Congenital heart disease was classified as simple (n=4, 29%), moderate (n=4, 29%), or complex (n=6, 42%). 3D TTE-CT fusion was successful in all patients. Median total time to complete the fusion process was 735 [628-1163] seconds, with no significant difference according to the degree of complexity of the defects. Landmarks were significantly modified in complex congenital heart disease., Conclusions: We established the feasibility and accuracy of 3D TTE-CT fusion in a population of children and adults with a variety of congenital heart diseases. A striking feature of the human pulmonary circulation is that mean (mPAP) and systolic (sPAP) pulmonary artery pressures (PAPs) are strongly related and, thus, are essentially redundant. According to the empirical formula documented under normotensive and hypertensive conditions (mPAP = 0.61 sPAP + 2 mmHg), sPAP matches ~160%mPAP on average. This attests to the high pulsatility of PAP, as also witnessed by the near equality of PA pulse pressure and mPAP. Our prospective study tested if pressure redundancy and high pulsatility also apply in a piglet model of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). At baseline (Week-0, W0), Sham ( n  = 8) and CTEPH ( n  = 27) had similar mPAP and stroke volume. At W6, mPAP increased in CTEPH only, with a two- to three-fold increase in PA stiffness and total pulmonary resistance. Seven CTEPH piglets were also studied at W16 at baseline, after volume loading, and after acute pulmonary embolism associated with dobutamine infusion. There was a strong linear relationship between sPAP and mPAP (1) at W0 and W6 ( n  = 70 data points, r ² = 0.95); (2) in the subgroup studied at W16 ( n  = 21, r ² = 0.97); and (3) when all data were pooled ( n  = 91, r ² = 0.97, sPAP range 9-112 mmHg). The PA pulsatility was lower than that expected based on observations in humans: sPAP matched ~120%mPAP only and PA pulse pressure was markedly lower than mPAP. In conclusion, the redundancy between mPAP and sPAP seems a characteristic of the pulmonary circulation independent of the species. Predisposition to autoimmunity and inflammatory disorders is observed in patients with fragile X-associated syndromes. These patients have increased numbers of CGG triplets in the 5' UTR region of FMR1 (Fragile X Mental Retardation 1) gene, that affects its expression. FMR1 is decreased in the thymus of myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, a prototypical autoimmune disease. We thus analyzed the number of CGG triplets in FMR1 in MG, and explored the regulatory mechanisms affecting thymic FMR1 expression. We measured the number of CGGs using thymic DNA from MG and controls, but no abnormalities in CGGs were found in MG that could explain thymic decrease of FMR1. We next analyzed by RT-PCR the expression of FMR1 and its transcription factors in thymic samples, and in thymic epithelial cell cultures in response to inflammatory stimuli. In control thymuses, FMR1 expression was higher in males than females, and correlated with CTCF (CCCTC-binding factor) expression. In MG thymuses, decreased expression of FMR1 was correlated with both CTCF and MAX (Myc-associated factor X) expression. Changes in FMR1 expression were supported by western blot analyses for FMRP. In addition, we demonstrated that FMR1, CTCF and MAX expression in thymic epithelial cells was also sensitive to inflammatory signals. Our results suggest that FMR1 could play a central role in the thymus and autoimmunity. First, in relation with the higher susceptibility of females to autoimmune diseases.
