A 57-y-old male yellow-naped parrot (Amazona auropalliata) was presented because of lethargy, inappetence, and weight loss. Hematology and serum biochemistry were unremarkable, and imaging revealed a mass in the distal esophagus at the coelomic inlet. The luminal diameter of the esophagus was reduced in this area, and passage of ingesta was limited. Following gavage feeding, the patient died and was submitted for autopsy. At postmortem examination, the noted mass effect was a thickening of the distal esophagus with adherent, coalescing, soft, pale-tan plaques on the mucosal surface. Additional gross findings included pale-tan, opaque feed material oozing from the dorsum of the lungs and covering the cranial air sacs. Histology of the esophagus, esophageal-proventricular junction, and proximal proventriculus revealed an unencapsulated, infiltrative, transmural neoplasm that extended from the mucosal surface deep into the muscularis, almost to the adventitia. The neoplasm was composed of cuboidal cells arranged in islands and tubules, consistent with an adenocarcinoma, a rarely reported entity in the esophagus of psittacine birds and to our knowledge not reported previously at the esophageal-proventricular junction. Morphological changes in the late‐embryo‐stage gastrointestinal tract of Nigerian indigenous chicken were investigated using anatomical techniques. The paraffin‐embedded sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and periodic acid Schiff‐Alcian blue (pH 2.5) stains. During the late pre‐hatch period, the framework of the stomach was already established, but glands were yet poorly developed. Randomly oriented pre‐glandular cells in the lamina propria mucosae at embryonic day (ED) 14 became organized into elongated simple tubular glands at ED 19 and assumed adult morphology at post‐hatch day (PD) 1. Acidic and neutral mucin deposits were associated with the glandular cells. In the small intestine, enterocytes of the tunica epithelialis mucosae transformed from cuboidal‐shaped cells (at ED 14) to tall columnar cells (at PD 1). Short crypts of Lieberkühn, goblet cells, microfold cells and enteroendocrine cells were evident at ED 19, while the lamina propria mucosae and submucosa contained mesenchymal cells, reticular cells and isolated lymphoblasts. Similarly, the crypts, lymphoblasts, mesenchymal and reticular cells were also associated with the lamina propria mucosae and submucosa of the caecum and colorectum at ED 19. It was inferred from these findings that extensive cellular and tissue modifications occur in the gastrointestinal tract within the narrow window of the late pre‐hatch period. The definitive gut tunics, epithelium, glandular tissues, immune‐competent cells and tissues are formed as a result. Thus, the embryonic gut of the bird is made capable of assuming its necessary functions of food digestion, nutrient absorption, water and ion re‐absorption, immune surveillance, antibody production and immune responses at hatch. An adult sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was unexpectedly found dead and was presented for post-mortem examination. Macroscopically, the proventricular wall was expanded by an infiltrative off-white mass, 10 mm in diameter, with secondary mucosal ulceration. Cytological examination of impression smears revealed a neoplastic epithelial cell population forming occasional well-defined acini with secretory product. Histologically, the neoplastic cells were predominantly arranged in acini and tubules, with fewer in small clusters, supported by a desmoplastic stroma. Neoplastic cells were polygonal, with mostly well-demarcated cell boundaries and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm that was multifocally markedly distended by more intensely eosinophilic material. There was an increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio with moderately sized to large nuclei (approximately 15 μm diameter) with lightly to densely stippled chromatin and single or paired prominent basophilic nucleoli. The mitotic count was 19 in 10 high-power fields (2.37 mm2), with scattered bizarre mitotic figures and atypia including moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and moderate cellular and nuclear pleomorphism. There was frequent intratubular brightly eosinophilic proteinaceous material, which was Alcian blue and periodic acid‒Schiff positive. Proventricular lymphovascular invasion was detected, with metastases within the ventriculus and lungs. Abstract Despite vaccine use, novel strains and variants of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) have emerged continuously, leading to economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. This study aimed to characterize the IBV isolate CK/CH/GX/202109 from three yellow broilers in Guangxi, China. Recombination was shown to have occurred in regions of the 1ab gene. Compared to the whole genome of ck/CH/LGX/130530, which is genotypically related to tl/CH/LDT3-03, the 202109 strain had 21 mutations. The pathological assessment showed that this variant caused 30% and 40% mortality in 1-day-old chicks infected with oral and ocular inoculum, respectively. Nephritis, enlarged proventriculus, inflammation of the gizzard, and atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius were also observed at both 7 and 14 days post-infection (dpi). Viral loads in the trachea, proventriculus, gizzard, kidney, bursa, and cloacal swabs were higher at 7 dpi than at 14 dpi. Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed that this virus exhibited multiple organ tropisms capable of infecting the trachea, proventriculus, gizzard, kidney, bursa, ileum, jejunum, and rectum. Almost none of the 1-day-old infected chicks seroconverted until 14 dpi. While the virus was found in the ileum, jejunum, and rectum in the 28-day-old ocular group, the majority of 28-day-old infected chickens seroconverted at 10 dpi. These study findings demonstrate that recombination events and mutations during the evolution of IBV may greatly alter tissue tropism and emphasize the need for the continued surveillance of novel strains and variants in order to control this infection.

The present work explores morphometric and histochemical foundations of the wall of proventriculus in adult domestic male ducks. To achieve this study, six healthy adult ducks were purchased from local vendors in Mosul province. All birds were sedated. Their stomachs were removed after being dissected to achieve the gross description and measurements of the proventriculus, including the length and diameter of cranial, middle, and caudal regions of the proventriculus. Small tissue pieces 6-8 mm in length from three regions of proventriculus were processed for histomorphological studies using hematoxylin and Eosin stain, combined PAS-AB pH 2.5, toluidine blue, and Masson's trichrome stains. The finding showed that the proventriculus connects with the esophagus from the cranial side and the muscular stomach from the caudal side. It was a thin elongated oval tubular organ. Histologically, the mucosa of the proventriculus revealed the presence of folds and sulci-like structures covered by simple columnar epithelium. The tunica submucosa consisted of many signs of profound and straightforward sub-mucosal glands supported by connective tissue septa and extended from the basal part of the diverged gland through the lamina propria, which was organized in a conical manner (adenomere). Tunica Muscularis appeared as a double-layer coordinated in the form of inner longitudinal and outer circular ones. Finally, serosa consists of fibrous tissue, vessels, fatty tissue, and nerve plexuses studded by the mesothelial cells. The highest thickness of the four layers of mucosal, submucosal, muscular, and serosal layers in the distal part of ‎the proventriculus. Histochemical PAS staining positively reacted with epithelial tunica mucosa and wall of proventricular glands.

The present investigation was performed to transpire the celiac artery distribution, histological, and histochemical characteristics of the proventriculus in eight adult barn owls (Tyto alba) of both sexes. Six birds were subjected to anatomical investigation of the celiac artery distribution and two owls were used for routine histomorphological techniques. The proventricular length, width, and lumen diameter were measured at 14.18 ± 0.08, 6.46 ± 0.17 and 1.46 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. The celiac artery in barn owl gave off six collateral arteries before its division into right and left branches. The arteria hepatica dextra does not originate from the right celiac division. Unlike other birds, there were left dorsal and left ventral gastric arteries. Histologically, the proventricular wall consisted of main four tunics. The lining epithelium is simple columnar with plicae and sulci. The muscularis mucosa is absent. The submucosal gastric glands were in two rows in the cranial proventricular portion while were arranged in one parallel row in the middle and caudal portions with pear-shaped, oval to round tubuloalveolar lobules. The mucosal folds, tubular mucosal glands, tubuloalveolar lobules, and their mucus secretion in the collecting ducts were positively reacted to PAS and alcian blue stains. The interlobular collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and reticular network were intensely reacted to Masson's trichrome, Orcein, and Gomori's reticulin stains, respectively. These anatomical and histomorphological features of the barn owl proventriculus were aimed to provide recent data comparable with most species of birds and the presence of diversity that might be attributed to their feeding demeanor. Hystrichis tricolor is a neglected avian enoplid nematode (superfamiliy Dioctophymatoidea) and known to parasitize various species of the Anatidae (Anas spp. and Mergus spp.) from the northern hemisphere, inducing mainly proventriculitis in domestic and wild waterfowl. Here, we focus on the pathological findings of naturally H. tricholor-infected Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) and a neozoan shelduck (Tandorninae) of Germany. Nowadays, this species is considered the fastest-spreading alien waterfowl species within Western Europe. Additionally, molecular sequencing coupled with phylogenetic characterization of H. tricolor is reported. Post mortem analyses unveiled patent gastric H. tricolor infections in eight of twelve infected birds (8/12; 66.7%), inducing proventriculitis resulting in large visible nodular lesions. Histopathological findings point to chronic host pro-inflammatory immune reactions. These results demonstrate the potential role of Egyptian geese as natural reservoir hosts of H. tricholor and highlight their possible role in parasite transmission (i.e., spillback) into endemic waterfowl species. Due to avian health concerns, the occurrence of hystrichiosis should be monitored in native waterfowl in the future, introducing appropriate management practices in conservation strategies of endemic wild birds not only in Germany but elsewhere in Europe. Transmissive viral proventriculitis (TVP) is a new avian disease, the etiology and pathogenesis and diagnostics of which remain unidentified, being therefore a subject of an active ongoing discussion among researchers and veterinary doctors. Cases of the disease have been reported and registered in many countries of the world. On poultry farms of Ukraine, this disease started to be diagnosed in 2019, according to the characteristic pathognomic changes. The article presents the results of pathoanatomical, histological and electronic-microscopical studies of the glandular part of the stomach of 62 ill broiler chickens aged 24-28 days and 7 clinical healthy broiler chickens of the same age. The samples of the proventriculus from the infected and clinically healthy chickens were fixated in 10% aqueous solution of neutral formalin and in 1.5% solution of glutaraldehyde in 0.2 molar cacodylate buffer (pH 7.2). Pathoanatomic necropsy of the infected broiler chickens revealed overall anemia, decrease in the volume of the spleen, thymus and fecal sac. In the glandular part of the stomach, the wall was slightly thickened, non-homogenously stained on the section, the mucous membrane being swollen, covered by dense whitish mucous. According to the histological study, the proventriculus of the broiler chickens had lymphocytic necrotizing proventriculitis. In the tubular-alveolar structures of the mucous membrane, there prevailed alteration of the secretory epithelium, with its transformation into ductal epithelium, combined with lymphocytic infiltration of the interstitium. Intensive necrosis of most glandular (oxynticopeptic) cells was accompanied by their exfoliation from the basal membrane of the secretory parts, with desquamated cells accumulating in enlarged lumens of alveoli and excretory ducts. Further, necrotized oxynticopeptic cells in the tubular-alveolar glands were actively replaced by cylindrical ductal cells, and also their hyperplasia and hypertrophy occurred. Diffusive and multifocal interalveolar round-cell infiltrates were mostly presented by lymphocytes, among which there occurred plasmocytes, macrophages, and heterophils. Ultrastructural studies of secretory cells revealed presence of pathogen virions in nucleus and cytoplasm. The present study was designed to investigate the histochemical developmental changes of the proventriculus at pre-hatching and post-hatching in the northern bobwhite quail at periods 11- and 15-days pre-hatching in addition to 14- and 21-days post-hatching. The proventriculus composed of four tunics is tunica mucosa, tunica sub-mucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa. The tunica mucosa was lined with simple columnar epithelium and the height of epithelium increases with the age also the thickness of the mucosa, the tunica submucosa filled with proventricular glands at 14- and 21-day post-hatch and the gland was height in diameters while in 11- and 15-day pre-hatch the gland less in diameter and the sub mucosa does not fill with the gland. Tunica muscularis was thicker in post-hatch than in pre-hatch, 11- and 15- day pre-hatch composed of a thin inner circular layer and thick outer longitudinal layer but in 14- and 21-day post-hatch the tunica muscularis was composed of a thin inner and outer circular layer and thick middle longitudinal layer. The mucosa and proventriculus glands give a positive reaction for Alcian blue stain and a weak to moderate reaction for periodic acid Schiff stain at pre-hatch, while at post-hatch the mucosa gives a positive reaction for Alcian blue stain and a negative reaction for periodic acid Schiff stain and the proventricular glands give a positive reaction for Alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff stains.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the histologic and micrometric study of the proventriculus and gizzard of the wild bronze turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Thirty clinically healthy Bronze turkeys (15 females and 15 males) were used for the study. Twelve tissue samples (six from the proventriculus and six from gizzard) from the corresponding age group were used to prepare histological slides. The preparations were stained with hematoxylin (Erlich) - eosin and Masson’s trichrome. The wall of the proventriculus was composed of four layers. They were tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. Mucosa had many grooves and plicae with simple columnar epithelium. The proventricular submucosa had compound tubuloalveolar glands which took the greatest part of the wall. The gizzard had tunica mucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. Compound tubular glands were found in the mucosa. On the mucosal surface was observed a thick keratinized layer, which was produced by the glands. In lamina propria mucosae were found compound tubular glands which opened on the mucosal surface by a short neck. The glands in the grooves were more branched, compared to those localized in the folds. Lamina muscularis mucosae was not found.

The current investigation aimed to clarify the histomorphological features, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and histochemistry of the proventriculus in the adult hooded crow (Corvus cornix). Twenty‐two adult birds of both sexes were collected from El‐Fayoum and Beni‐Suef governorates, Egypt; ten were used for anatomical investigation, two were scanned using SEM, and ten were subjected to routine histological technique. The obtained anatomical results revealed a small‐sized spindle‐shaped proventriculus obliquely located in the left ventral part of the body cavity with an average body weight, length and diameter of 1.689 ± 0.231 gm, 1.54 ± 0.383cm and 3.51 ± 0.416cm, respectively. The histological examination revealed a typical tubular organ. The mucosa exhibited several plicae and sulci that were lined with simple columnar cells. The lamina propria was composed of collagenous connective tissue infiltrated by lymphocytes, lymphatic aggregations and tubular glands. The submucosa consisted of collagenic fibres and compound tubuloalveolar glandular lobules lined with oxynticopeptic cells and enteroendocrine cells. The oxynticopeptic cells reacted negatively with PAS and Alcian Blue stains, whereas the ductal cells reacted positively with PAS only. Enteroendocrine cells were seen singly in the lamina epithelialis mucosae and were abundant in submucosal glands. The tunica musclaris was arranged in two layers covered by serosa. The proventricular glands' openings were noticed by SEM as raised tubes with regular circular outlines surrounded by anastomosed microscopic folds. The obtained histomorphological structure of the hooded crow's proventriculus revealed some shared morphological features with most species of birds and some variations that might be attributed to their diet and feeding behaviour. The study analyzed the histomorphometry of the mature female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) stomach with the aid of ImageJ software. The different histological parts were identified using a compound microscope. Five mature laying female Japanese quail were collected and necropsied. The digestive organs, particularly proventriculus and gizzard, were collected and processed for tissue staining. Histological identification and measurement of thickness and depth of various structures were subsequently performed. Comparable to other avian species, the proventriculus was comprised of four layers: thin tunica serosa (22.69 µm), tunica muscularis (235.07 µm) with outer longitudinal and inner circular smooth muscle layers, thick tunica submucosa (2,164.37 µm) containing glands, and innermost tunica mucosa (553.42 µm) with papillae. The gizzard was characterized by four tunics: thin tunica serosa (60.44 µm), thick tunica muscularis (1,480.07 µm), tunica submucosa (112.25 µm), and tunica mucosa (456.15 µm) where the glands, crypts, and koilin can be found. The findings suggest that the histology of proventriculus and gizzard of the Japanese quail have no remarkable difference compared to other poultry species. However, the histomorphometry of the organs examined had remarkable variations as compared to other avians.

The present study was conducted to determine the histological and histomorphometric variations in the tongue, oesophagus, proventriculus, and gizzard of ostriches (Struthio camelus) with regards to the sex and advancing age. A total of 40 healthy ostriches of both sexes and five age groups; young (up to 1 year, 1 to 2 years and 2 to 3 years) and adult (3 to 4 years and above 4 years) in equal numbers (n = 8) were used in this study. The organs under study were collected immediately after slaughtering the birds. Overall, the colour, shape, weight and various dimensions (length, width, and diameter) of the collected organs were recorded. The mean values of the gross anatomical variables of the studied organs increased (P < 0.05) among all the young groups (i.e., from 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years). Similarly, the organs under study in the adult groups (birds aged 3 to 4 years and above 4 years) grew (P < 0.05) as well. However, the differences between the adults were not significant. The histological analysis and histometric measurements were conducted on paraffin embedded tissue sections with Image J® analysis software. The statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in the thickness of the different tunics of the digestive organs in all the groups except those the adult groups. These findings may be of importance for the strategic manipulation of feed and nutrition to enhance the growth rate and also to diagnose pathological processes.

The present study was implemented to provide comprehensive information on the developmental sequence of the proventriculus of Muscovy ducks by gross examination, macro‐micrometric analysis and by using light microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Samples from 55 healthy post‐hatching Muscovy ducks of both sexes ranging from 1 to 60 days old. The proventriculus began cranially opposite to the cranial end of the liver at 1–15 days old, but in front this level at 30 and 60 days old. Morphometrically, the length of the proventriculus was increased by about four folds while weight by 19 folds at 60 days old when compared with those at one day old. Scanning electron microscopy of the proventricular lumen at one day old exhibited numerous small mostly rounded irregularly distributed openings of the glands, but uniformly distributed and surrounded by closely packed concentrically arranged mucosal folds resembling a rosette shape at the older ages. Histologically, in all studied stages, rounded, elongated oval or polymorphic shaped lobules of the proventricular glands were occupied within the muscularis mucosa. The tubuloalveolar secretory units lined with secretory (oxyntico‐peptic) cells with variable shapes had secretory granules increased by the development. Numerous argyrophilic endocrine cells were demonstrated away from the glandular lumen at older ages. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cytoplasm of the secretory cells contained homogeneously electron‐dense granules at a young age, but two types of these granules could be recognized at 60 days old. In conclusion, this study provides a wide difference in the morphometric and the structure of the proventriculus from one day to 60 days old. This difference between the examined age‐stages may be related to the feeding strategy (behavior) and the functional adaptations from the young to the older ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Trypanosoma brucei exhibits a complex life-cycle alternating between tsetse flies and mammalian hosts. When parasites infect the fly, cells differentiate to adapt to life in various tissues, which is accompanied by drastic morphological and biochemical modifications especially in the proventriculus. This key step represents a bottleneck for salivary gland infection. Methods Here, we monitored flagellum assembly in trypanosomes during differentiation from the trypomastigote to the epimastigote stage, i.e. when the nucleus migrates to the posterior end of the cell, by using three-dimensional electron microscopy (focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, FIB-SEM) and immunofluorescence assays. Results The combination of light and electron microscopy approaches provided structural and molecular evidence that the new flagellum is assembled while the nucleus migrates towards the posterior region of the body. Two major differences with well-known procyclic cells are reported. First, growth of the new flagellum begins when the associated basal body is found in a posterior position relative to the mature flagellum. Secondly, the new flagellum acquires its own flagellar pocket before rotating on the left side of the anterior-posterior axis. FIB-SEM revealed the presence of a structure connecting the new and mature flagellum and serial sectioning confirmed morphological similarities with the flagella connector of procyclic cells. We discuss the potential function of the flagella connector in trypanosomes from the proventriculus. Conclusions These findings show that T. brucei finely modulates its cytoskeletal components to generate highly variable morphologies.

Red jungle fowl is one of the endemic animals in the island of Timor which has a decline in population. This study aimed to determine the histological structure and distribution of neutral carbohydrates in the esophagus and proventriculus of red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus). The main samples used in this study were three samples esophageal tissue and proventriculus. Chickens were killed by cervical dislocation to collection esophageal and proventricular organs those fixed in 10% formalin. The histolomorphology structures were identified by using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and neutral carbohydrate distribution was identified by using Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) staining. The results showed that esophageal histolomorphology structure consisted of four layers, namely tunica mucosal, tunica submucosal, tunica muscularis and tunica adventitia. Proventricular histolomorphology structure consisted of four layers, namely tunica mucosal, tunica submucosal, tunica muscularis and tunica serous. Neutral carbohydrate distribution were found in the esophageal glands showed strong positive reaction while epithelial lamina and loose connective tissue in the lamina propria showed weak positive reaction and proventriculus showed strong positive reactions in cells lining the epithelium and cavity of simple tubular glandular.

The results of pathological anatomical changes in the proventriculus of a decorative peacock that died from tuberculosis were described in this article. Mixed chronic destructive multifocal ulcerative panproventriculitis with a predominance of ulcerative component without signs of healing was diagnosed. Absence of epithelialization of large ulcer and relief in this area is a sign of malignancy. Complicating pathologies were classified: rupture of iroventriculus wall, hemorrhage, atrophy of glands of mucous membranes, picatrization, deformity. Proventricular component in the pathomorphosis of ornamental peacock tuberculosis is an accessible and convenient target for the diagnostician and can significantly supplement the pathomorphological criteria used to decipher the variants of avian tuberculosis course. The objective of present study was to study the differences ofhistometric and histochemicalaspectsof proventriculus of both pigeon (Columba livia domestica) and duck (Anas platyhynchos) according to their different in food type. To conduct this target twenty adult normal healthy birds regardless to their sex were used in this study. Birds were collected from local suppliers at Babylon province.All birds were euthanasia and the dissection of their abdomen was done. The proventriculus of both birds was identified. The specimens were fixed in 10% formalin and the tissue sample were passed through routine histological technique. Section of 5-7 µm were prepared and stained with routine hematoxyline and eosin and special staining that were Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Masson’s Trichrome and Alcian Blue (AB) to achieve the current results. The histological observations revealed that the wall of theproventriculus in pigeon and duck was made up of the four tunicae; mucosa, submucosa, muscalaris and serosa. There was a statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) of histometric parameters (height of mucosal fold, thickness of tunica mucosa, thickness of tunica submucosa and thickness of tunica muscularis of proventriculus between pigeon and duck. Histochemical results of sections with Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) stain of proventriculus surface epithelium and the mucosal folds showed a positive reaction that indicate that the secretion was neutral mucin. The present study was conducted to determine the histological and histomorphometric variations in the tongue, oesophagus, proventriculus, and gizzard of ostriches (Struthio camelus) with regards to the sex and advancing age. A total of 40 healthy ostriches of both sexes and five age groups; young (up to 1 year, 1 to 2 years and 2 to 3 years) and adult (3 to 4 years and above 4 years) in equal numbers (n = 8) were used in this study. The organs under study were collected immediately after slaughtering the birds. Overall, the colour, shape, weight and various dimensions (length, width, and diameter) of the collected organs were recorded. The mean values of the gross anatomical variables of the studied organs increased (P < 0.05) among all the young groups (i.e., from 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years). Similarly, the organs under study in the adult groups (birds aged 3 to 4 years and above 4 years) grew (P < 0.05) as well. However, the differences between the adults were not significant. The histological analysis and histometric measurements were conducted on paraffin embedded tissue sections with Image J® analysis software. The statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in the thickness of the different tunics of the digestive organs in all the groups except those the adult groups. Zymosan is a fungi-derived pathogen-associated molecular pattern. It activates the immune system and induces the reduction of feed passage rate in the gastrointestinal tract of vertebrates including birds. However, the mechanism mediating the zymosan-induced inhibition of feed passage in the gastrointestinal tract remains unknown. Since the medulla oblongata regulates the digestive function, it is plausible that the medulla oblongata is involved in the zymosan-induced inhibition of feed passage. The present study was performed to identify the genes that were affected by zymosan within the medulla oblongata of chicks (Gallus gallus) using an RNA sequencing approach. We found that mRNAs of several bioactive molecules including neuropeptide Y (NPY) were increased with an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of zymosan. The increase of mRNA expression of NPY in the medulla oblongata was also observed after the IP injection of lipopolysaccharide, derived from gram-negative bacteria. These results suggest that medullary NPY is associated with physiological changes during fungal and bacterial infection. Furthermore, we found that intracerebroventricular injection of NPY and its receptor agonists reduced the feed passage from the crop. Additionally, the injection of NPY reduced the feed passage from the proventriculus to lower digestive tract. NPY also suppressed the activity of duodenal activities of amylase and trypsin. The present study suggests that fungi- and bacteria-induced activation of the immune system may activate the NPY neurons in the medulla oblongata and thereby reduce the digestive function in chicks. The Crato Formation (Santana Group, Araripe Basin, Brazil) bears a high abundance of fossils in exceptional state of preservation, with insects from the order Orthoptera standing out. However, so far, few studies have explored their preserved inner organs in detail. Here, we provide the first detailed description of fossilized proventriculi from nine Grylloidea (Orthoptera: Ensifera) specimens of the Crato Formation. In all analyzed specimens, the external cuticle of the abdomen is cracked exposing the proventriculi, which are preserved as a tridimensional organ with a globular body and a tubular neck, similar to that of modern crickets. However, in the globular region of all fossils analyzed there are 9–12 rows of parallel divisions, differing from the modern crickets which have, more frequently, six. SEM images of two specimens revealed the exceptional preservation of internal median teeth, folds, and microvilli texture preserved in the organ. • Grylloidea from Crato were recovered with their tridimensional proventriculi preserved. • The fossilized proventriculi are similar to that of modern crickets. • SEM micrographs revealed exquisite preservation of structures in the organs. Tetrameres spp. are pathogenic parasites of poultry and are present in the proventricular glands. Carcasses of ten ducks from two different farms of Thrissur district brought for necropsy to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy formed the material for study. All the birds were reported to have similar clinical signs such as dullness, anorexia and greenish diarrhoea. On necropsy, carcasses were found to be emaciated with blackish nodules on the proventricular mucosa and discernible through the wall. On histopathology, there were duct compression, ectasia, glandular atrophy, presence of Tetrameres spp. eggs and associated inflammatory changes. Based on gross, microscopic and parasitological examination, present case was diagnosed as parasitic proventriculitis in ducks consistent with Tetrameres spp. infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study was carried out on 24 apparently healthy post-hatching Muscovy ducks of both sexes ranging from 1-60 days old. They were divided into 5 age groups to investigate the development of the junctions of the stomach; esophago-proventricular junction, proventriculo-gizzard junction (Isthmus gastris) and ventriculo-duodenal junction by using light and scanning electron microscopy. The longitudinal folds of the esophago-proventricular junction were separated by longitudinal grooves and they were crossed by thin transverse ridges; some of the longitudinal folds were branched toward the proventriculus at 60 days old. At one day old, the lymphoid infiltrations were observed in the lamina propria at the esophago-proventricular junction. With the advancement of the age, abundant diffused lymphoid infiltration and esophageal tonsil were observed. In all age groups, the cuticle covering of the mucosa at proventriculus-gizzard junction increased in thickness toward the gizzard. Moreover, in one day old duckling, the proventricular glands were observed underneath the gizzard tubular glands, these glands were become well developed at 60 days old. The lamina propria of the gizzard-duodenal junction showed slight lymphatic infiltration at one day old age. Lymphatic infiltration and more lymphatic aggregations were abundant at 7-15 days. While between 30-60 days age, lymph nodules were distinct. Numerous endocrine cells were also observed in mucosa of the gizzard-duodenal junction.

A new species of bark beetle Acacicis aphananthe Lin & Beaver (tribe Diamerini) from Taiwan is described, as well as its biology in the host plant, Aphananthe aspera (Cannabacaeae). Five species, Eidophelus darwini (Eichhoff, 1878), Hylesinus tristis (Blandford, 1894), Phloeocranus bruchoides Schedl, 1942, Phloeosinus camphoratus Tsai & Yin, 1964, and Hypothenemus aulmanni (Hagedorn, 1912) are reported in Taiwan for the first time. The study was done on sixteen specimens including: eight Parrot and eight francolins of both sexes. The current study aims to discover the structures of proventiculi and ventriculi belonging to these birds specifically their histologic and histochemical textures. The anatomical studies revealed that stomach of both birds consists of: proventiculi & ventriculi. Histological exam was showed that the wall of proventiculus of the Parrot and francolin composed of four layers including: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa. The epithelia of proventiculi and venticulus were simple columnar cells for each bird. The obtained means of thickness of layers of proventiculus and venticulus appear different between male and female of both birds. The study analyzed the histomorphometry of the mature female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) stomach with the aid of ImageJ software. The different histological parts were identified using a compound microscope. Five mature laying female Japanese quail were collected and necropsied. The digestive organs, particularly proventriculus and gizzard, were collected and processed for tissue staining. Histological identification and measurement of thickness and depth of various structures were subsequently performed. Comparable to other avian species, the proventriculus was comprised of four layers: thin tunica serosa (22.69 µm), tunica muscularis (235.07 µm) with outer longitudinal and inner circular smooth muscle layers, thick tunica submucosa (2,164.37 µm) containing glands, and innermost tunica mucosa (553.42 µm) with papillae. The gizzard was characterized by four tunics: thin tunica serosa (60.44 µm), thick tunica muscularis (1,480.07 µm), tunica submucosa (112.25 µm), and tunica mucosa (456.15 µm) where the glands, crypts, and koilin can be found. The findings suggest that the histology of proventriculus and gizzard of the Japanese quail have no remarkable difference compared to other poultry species. Research on eusocial bee species like Bombus terrestris is primarily focused on the worker caste, which is why their morphology and anatomy are already well described. This includes the alimentary tract, which is adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen. Located at the transition between crop and ventriculus is a highly specialised compartment, the proventriculus. In female workers of B. terrestris, the proventriculus is surrounded by muscles and consists of four anterior lips. A detailed description, however, is only provided for B. terrestis worker bees while studies on the proventriculus of the male reproductive caste are absent. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of the differences between the proventriculus of the B. terrestris males and females through morphometrics, histology and scanning electron microscopy imaging, and unravel a distinct sexual dimorphism. The male proventriculus is wider resulting in a greater volume than the female proventriculus. Histological analysis revealed 4 distinctive chambers of the male proventriculus, which are completely covered with hairs on the inside. In contrast, those chambers in the proventriculus of female B. terrestris, are only rudimentarily present forming only small pouches with hairs in the junctions between the proventricular folds inside the proventriculus. The morphological differences in the proventriculus may be based on different modi vivendi, as males do not return to the colony and fly longer distances. Objective: The objective of this research was to study the histological structures of proventriculus by light and scanning electron microscope and to investigate the localization of glucagon immunoreactive cells within the turkey proventriculus. Materials and methods: Ten adult healthy turkeys were used in this study. The specimens were fixed in 10% buffered neutral formalin. The tissue samples were studied through routine histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Other samples were used for scanning microscope. Results: This study confirmed that the turkey proventriculus was formed from four tunics; tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. The lamina epithelialis was simple columnar and gave positive reaction in Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) stain. The lamina propria contained simple tubular glands lined with columnar cells with lymphocyte infiltration. The submucosa contained proventricular glands formed with many round lobules. Each lobule was consisted of secretory tubules radiating from the central lumen of the lobule. The lining epithelium of the central lumen was columnar epithelium. The epithelium of the secretory tubules was cuboidal. Scanning electron microscopic observations showed the mucous membrane was consisted of many macroscopic papillae that formed from many folds which separated by furrows. Immunohistochemical observations revealed that glucagon immunoreactive cells were mainly determined inside the proventricular glands than within the surface epithelium mainly in the basal portion of the lobules and in the epithelium of central lumen of gland lobules. Conclusion: The structure of proventriculus structure in turkey has some variations as compared to other species of birds, and this may be attributed to the diet and its nutritious behavior. The study aimed to find out the histological and histochemical structures of the walls of the stomach parts in Iraqi Falcon (Falcon berigora).To conduct this investigation, six healthy birds which obtained from a commercial market in (Al Basra city). the stomach of the falcon is constituted by two chambers: the proventriculus (pars glandularis), the gizzard (ventriculus or pars muscularis). Under the light microscopy There is no papilla on the gastric epithelium surface of the proventricular. Both, the mucous tunic of the proventriculus and of the gizzard present folds lined by simple columnar epithelium. The tunica mucosa of the proventriculus is extensively folded due to the presence of well-developed longitudinal muscle bundles. There is no intermediate zone between the proventriculus and the gizzard. The luminal surface of the ventriculus have cuticle, which is sloughed and shed small fine area (around the pyloric opening) and very thin membrane and highly closely adherent to the lining surface of gizzard. Background: Trypanosoma brucei exhibits a complex life-cycle alternating between tsetse flies and mammalian hosts. When parasites infect the fly, cells differentiate to adapt to life in various tissues, which is accompanied by drastic morphological and biochemical modifications especially in the proventriculus. This key step represents a bottleneck for salivary gland infection. Methods: Here, we monitored flagellum assembly in trypanosomes during differentiation from the trypomastigote to the epimastigote stage, i.e. when the nucleus migrates to the posterior end of the cell, by using three-dimensional electron microscopy (focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, FIB-SEM) and immunofluorescence assays. Results: The combination of light and electron microscopy approaches provided structural and molecular evidence that the new flagellum is assembled while the nucleus migrates towards the posterior region of the body. Two major differences with well-known procyclic cells are reported. First, growth of the new flagellum begins when the associated basal body is found in a posterior position relative to the mature flagellum. Secondly, the new flagellum acquires its own flagellar pocket before rotating on the left side of the anterior-posterior axis. FIB-SEM revealed the presence of a structure connecting the new and mature flagellum and serial sectioning confirmed morphological similarities with the flagella connector of procyclic cells. We discuss the potential function of the flagella connector in trypanosomes from the proventriculus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological development of the stomach of broiler chicken using histological and histo-chemical techniques. Thirty fertile eggs and 50 chicks of broiler chicken were used for the study. The results showed that at embryonic day (ED) 14, the simple tubular glands of the proventriculus were poorly defined while the framework of the compound tubular glands of the proventriculus were fully established. The secretory tubules of the compound tubular glands were lined by simple cuboidal cells at embryonic days 14, 17 and 19. However, at post-hatch days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21, each proventricular gland contained several secretory tubules that were lined by both cuboid-shaped and columnar-shaped epithelial cells. The simple tubular glands which appeared as short tubes at ED 17, became elongated at ED 19, assuming adult morphology at post-hatch day (PD) 1. Moreover, at ED 14, poorly defined glandular areas were present in the lamina propria mucosae of the ventriculus. However, at ED 17 and ED 19, elongated pits which represented simple tubular glands were observed in the ventriculus. The production of neutral and acidic mucins in the stomach at ED 14 may reflect early secretory roles of glands in the stomach of broiler chicken. Thus, this study has provided morphological evidence of rapid development of broiler stomach glands in the late prehatch periods and maturation of the glands at hatch. The aim of this study was to investigate the course and distribution of the celiac artery in Hooded crows and to extend our knowledge on the captured crows. Scarce information in the field of veterinary comparative anatomy and the available literature on the celiac artery and its distribution is provided. So, the present study tried to declare the confusion about the course and distribution of the celiac artery in the Hooded crows. Therefore, 10 apparently healthy Hooded crows of different ages and sexes were captured. The birds were anaesthetized by IM injection of 0.5 cc of 2% xylazine HCL (3 mg/kg). Colored gum milk latex (60%) was then injected through the descending aorta. Then, specimens were subjected to fine dissection to demonstrate the origin, course and distribution of the celiac artery. The celiac artery erupted laterally from the right face of the descending aorta opposite to the distance between the 5th and 6th vertebral rib, on a level with the junction of the esophagus and the proventriculus. It proceeded ventrally and slight caudally, where it gave off the esophageal artery after, 5 cm from its origin, the dorsal proventricular artery, splinc arteries and at the middle of spleen then bifurcated into left and right branches. The left branch of the celiac artery gave rise to right hepatic artery, ventral proventricular artery, pyloric branches, ventral gastric artery and then continued as the A. gastrica sinistra. The right branch of the celiac artery released the caudal group of splenic arteries, A. gastrica dextra, then continued as A. pancreaticoduodenalis.

A current study its goal to comparison the histological structure in the gastric wall in domestic pigeon and domestic quail. Six adult birds of each species were taken from the commercial market in the city of Wasit were used in this study. All the birds were killed in a compassionate manner and the abdomens were opened then samples taken from the stomach. This study revealed in both birds this wall proventriculus consists from four layers of tissue are: mucosa layer, submucous layer, muscular layer and serous layer. The mucous membrane of the mucosa layer contains different folds in the lengths that are spaced between them lining with a simple columnar epithelial tissue. The superficial glands of the simple tubular type lined with simple cuboidal epithelial tissue. Submucous layer contains deep gastric glands that composed most of the wall of it, in pigeon the deep gastric gland tubular while in quail alveolar. The muscular layer consists from two parts: a thick inner layer arranged circularly and outer longitudinal. The serous layer was loose connective tissue that include blood vessels and nerve plexus. The ventriculus wall in both birds consist of the following tissue layer: mucosa layer, submucous layer, muscular layer and serous layer. The thick cuticle layer cover the mucosa layer, the folds of the mucosalined with simple columnar epithelium, a glands it is a simple tubular type, submucosa layer losse connective tissue. Musculris layer consist of two layers fromsoft muscle fibers a sophisticated thick internal layer arranged in a round and narrow outer layer shape. The histochemical study in both birds shows the presence of high amount of mucopolysaccharides in proventriculus glands ventriculus which PAS gave positive reaction, the ventriculus mucosa is coated by thick layer cuticle stained with PAS gave positive result, articulate the existence of acid mucin within contents in both two type of bird. This study aims to study the histological composition of the proventrrculus and the gizzard in the Iraqi black partridge Francolinus francolinus using light microscope. This study procedure required the collection of 20 samples of the Iraqi black partridge from Al-Najaf desert. The samples were dissected and processed using the histological study technique. The proventrrculus wall and the gizzard consist of four main tunicae, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa, as well as the presence of the koilin layer, which covers tunica mucosa of the gizzard. The lining epithelium of the proventrrculus covers with a simple columnar epithelial tissue and lamina propria, which compose of a loose connective tissue. While tunica submucosa forms the most part of the proventriculus wall and consists mainly of the deep gastric glands. Tunica muscularis consists of three layers of smooth muscle fibers and finally a tunica serosa consists of a loose connective tissue. In the gizzard the lining epithelium covers with low columnar to cuboidal cells, while the lamina propria filled with the gizzard glands and missing the muscularis mucosae. Early feeding post-hatching (EFPH) can impact the immune response and modify the immunity-related gene expression. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effects of EFPH with different diets composition versus fasting during the first 72 h of chick’s life on the histomorphological structures of the liver, proventriculus, central and peripheral lymphoid organs, and immunity-related genes in layer-type chicks during the brooding period. A total of 400 chicks were randomly allotted into 4 groups with 4 replicates each. The experimental groups during the first 72 h of life were: feed and water deprivation (control, T1), feeding a starter layer diet (20% CP and 11.84 MJ/kg ME, T2), feeding a starter layer diet contained 3% molasses in its composition (20% CP and 11.81 MJ/kg ME; T3), and feeding a starter broiler diet (23% CP and 12.68 MJ/kg ME, T4). After the first 72 h of chick’s life, all chicks were fed ad libitum the T2 diet. EFPH had no negative effect on the development of the lymphoid or digestive organs in chicks. Greater relative weights of the spleen and bursa of Fabricius (p < 0.05) were observed in the early fed chicks compared to control at day 14 of age. Histomorphological examination revealed an increase (p < 0.05) in thymus cortex and cortex:medulla in the T3 and T4 groups compared to the fasted ones at day 28 of age. Pelicae height, follicular width, cortex, and cortex:medulla of bursa were improved (p < 0.01) in the fed groups compared to fasted chicks, with resultant influences on the primary lymphoid organs. Compared to control, higher germinal center areas and white pulp of the spleen (p < 0.05) were recorded in the early fed chicks, implying augmented proliferation and maturation of B cells in the secondary lymphoid organs. In the liver, a strong positive reaction to Best’s carmine stain in the early fed groups, indicating that the liver of these chicks had numerous glycogen granules or greater glycogen density in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes. There was a significant enhancement in the proventriculus mucosal and gland thickness, as well as fold height (p < 0.05) in the early fed chicks. The expression levels of splenic Toll-like receptor 2, interleukin 4, tumor necrosis factor α, and interferon gamma were up-regulated (p < 0.01) in most of the early fed chicks (T2, T3, and T4) compared to fasted ones at 14 day of age. In conclusion, EFPH could modify the splenic-immunity related genes and modulate the histomorphology of the digestive (liver and proventriculus) and lymphoid organs in layer-type chicks during the brooding period.

A carcass of a captive ostrich was received from Assam State Zoo authority in the Department of Veterinary Pathology for postmortem examination. At postmortem examination, one inch long metallic needle was found attached to the mucous surface of the proventriculus. There was a punctured wound at the point of attachment. A lump of garbage occluded the proventricular lumen. The intestines showed beaded appearance with the presence of black sandy and stone pieces. The gizzard contents were also similar to the intestinal content. The intestinal lesions were suggestive of impaction and digestive disturbances of the bird. This case report will help the ornithologists and pathologist to study the feeding behavior and pathology of traumatic injury in the proventriculus of such wild and captive birds. For the first time in Iraq, Tetrameres dubia was isolated from the black –winged stilt Himantopus himantopus with prevalence 17.2% and mean intensity of infection 2.7and Chettusia leucura with prevalence 9.7% and mean intensity of infection 1.7 which was hunted from Sinaph marsh in Thi-Qar province south Iraq, This species recorded for the first time in Iraq عزلت الدودة الخيطية Tetrameres dubia من طير الكرسوع himantopus Himantopus (Black winged stilt ) وطيور الزقزاق ابيض الذنب (White-tailed plover Chettusia leucura التي تم اصطيادها من هور السناف في محافظة ذي قار جنوب العراق , بلغت نسبة الاصابة بالدودة الخيطية 17.2 % وبمعدل شدة الاصابة 2.7 في طيور الكرسوع اما في طيور الزقزاق فلقد بلغت نسبة اصابتها 9.7% وبمعدل شدة اصابة 1.7.وصفت هذه الدودة وصفا تصنيفيا ويعد تسجيلها الأول في العراق .

Tetrameres nouveli was isolated from the black –winged stilt Himantopus himantopus which was hunted from Sinaph marsh in Thi-Qar province south Iraq dur ing the period April 2014 to March 2015 with prevalence 15.55% and mean intensity of infection 1.42, In the current study, T. nouveli was recorded for the first time in Iraq. عزلت الدودة الخيطية Tetrameres nouveli من طير الكرسوع himantopus Himantopus البالغ عددها 90 طيرا التي تم اصطيادها من هور السناف في محافظة ذي قار جنوب العراق من نيسان 2014 الى اذار 2015. بلغت نسبة الاصابة %15.6 بهذه الخيطية ومعدل شدة اصابة 1.42. وصفت هذه الخيطية وصفا تصنيفيا وقورنت مع الانواع المسجلة في العالم ويعد تسجيلها الاول في العراق .

Eusociality is an extreme form of social behavior found in some invertebrates, especially in ants, which allows them to thrive and dominate the environment through their cooperative and organized behavior. Their complex colony structure and social behavior is provided, among other things, by morphological adaptations, such as the unique structure and a huge variety of proventriculi relative to other insect groups. Here, we report the first discovery of proventriculus by X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) in the fossil ants †Oecophylla brischkei Mayr, 1868 and †Oecophylla crassinoda Wheeler, 1922. This is a remarkable fossil find, as it opens up new perspectives for research on phylogeny, the evolution of ant sociality and feeding behavior. We present a 3D model of the proventriculus in Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius, 1775) and a 3D model of the proventriculus in †Oe. brischkei and compare them. Fossil proventriculi are not fundamentally different in structure from the recent. Nematodes of the genus Libyostrongylus parasitize ostriches, causing high mortality rates. These nematodes are found in the proventriculus and ventriculus of ostriches, but little is known about their distribution and the possible anatomopathological changes they cause in the various regions of these organs. This paper describes the distribution and quantification of Libyostrongylus and pathological changes found in regions of the proventriculus and ventriculus of ostriches with high and low levels of both natural and experimental infection. Ostriches were necropsied and tissue samples from the distinct regions of both organs were analysed based on nematode counts and histopathology after staining with haematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome or Alcian blue/PAS. The cranial and glandular regions of the proventriculus were the most parasitized. The ventriculus contained more nematodes in the caudal region. No macro- or microscopic pathological changes were observed in either of these organs of experimentally-infected birds. However, naturally-infected birds with high levels of infection presented proventriculus with macroscopic lesions and heterophilic infiltrates surrounding nematodes. In the glandular region of this organ, nematodes were located in the adenomeres of the secretory ducts, causing altered architecture and erosions and ulcerative lesions with damaged epithelium. Nematode eggs were found in the koilin layer of the middle and caudal regions of the ventriculus only of these birds. The pH of the regions assessed by Alcian blue/PAS staining changed from acidic in the proventriculus to more alkaline in the caudal region of the ventriculus. These data add knowledge to the biology of Libyostrongylus. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS The most parasitized areas were the cranial and glandular regions of the proventriculus. Naturally-infected birds with high levels of infection presented macro lesions in the proventriculus and damaged epithelium. Nematode eggs were found in the ventriculus.
