Abstract

Under irrigation with secondary effluent, it is often assumed that reduced leaching would delay the transport of effluent organic matter (OM) from within the root zone for long enough for biodegradation to practically eliminate it. This hypothesis was tested in a lysimeter study which compared tap water with low-quality secondary effluent (total organic C [TOC] = 190 mg C [L.sup.-1]) for Eucalyptus irrigation. Lysimeters (200-L drums) were packed with dune sand or one of two clayey soils (A horizons of a Calcic Haploxeroll and a Typic Palexeralf) and were either not planted or planted. Leaching treatments were leaching fraction 1 (LF 1) (not planted) and LF 0.2, intermittent leaching and prolonged deficit irrigation. These provided residence times of the water in the soil that ranged from 0.8 to over 200 d. While root organic C (OC) made a negligible net contribution to leachate OC, the effluent-derived OC was rather recalcitrant as was indicated by: (i) the concentrations of TOC in the leachate increased with decreasing LF to over 250 mg C [L.sup.-1]; (ii) the recovery of the applied TOC in the leachate was significant (10-20%) even at RTs over 20 d (LF [congruent to] 0.06 in the sand-packed lysimeters). Most all the dissolved and colloidal organic C (DOC) was smaller than 30 kDa. We expect these concentrations of low-molecular-weight mobile OC to govern many aspects of the biological and chemical behavior in solutions of effluent-irrigated soils, especially under reduced-leaching regimes.

Abstract

International audience; 2D MR spectroscopy has the advantage to increase spectral resolution by unraveling the spectral information along a second dimension and resultsin a gain in quantification precision at the cost of increased acquisition time. To overcome this issue, non uniform sampling (NUS) allowing acquisition acceleration has recently been revisited as a solution in combination with the compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction or maximum entropy. NUS scheme is generally designed with randomly chosen indirect dimension step (t1). Besides, by taking advantage of the prior knowledge on the spectral support of sparse spectra, one can optimize the indirect dimension NUS regarding the reconstructed spectral information in COSY (Correlation spectroscopy) type spectra. The 2D time domain signal is a sum of separable terms resulting in separable spectrum with same spectral support in the two frequency domains. The sequential backward selection (SBS) algorithm can be used for choosing the indirect dimension step leading to decreasing noise and error in the reconstruction of the spectrum. The aim of this work is to demonstrate and study the feasibility of time domain quantification for NUS applied on Localized COSY (L-COSY) spectra by using this SBS approach.

International audience; La spectroscopie 2D permet d’augmenter la résolution spectrale en déroulant l’information spectrale le long d’une dimension supplémentaire, et ainsi d’obtenir une meilleure discrimination des composantes du spectre et une quantification plus précise. Cependant le temps d’acquisition augmente. Pour diminuer ce dernier, il existe des méthodes d’échantillonnage irrégulier avec reconstruction par échantillonnage compressé ou par maximum d’entropie permettant d’acquérir moins de lignes en dimension indirecte t1. Le choix de ces incréments est généralement fait de manière aléatoire. En prenant appui sur le support spectral de spectres parcimonieux de type COSY, le choix de ces lignes peut être optimisé [2]. Le signal 2D acquis est composé d’une somme de termes séparables résultant en une somme de spectres séparables le long des deux directions fréquentielles du spectre. L’algorithme SBS (sequential backward selection) permet de choisir les lignes en t1 pour diminuer le bruit et l’erreur de reconstruction du spectre. Ce travail étudie la possibilité d’une quantification dans le domaine temporel des spectres localisés COSY acquis irrégulièrement via un choix des lignes t1 par l’algorithme SBS

Abstract

Toxic elements found in wastes may have a negative impact on the environment, especially through the contamination of groundwater and plants. To reduce their mobility and availability, French regulations mandate the solidification and stabilization of toxic wastes. Many methods to stabilize and solidify wastes exist, among them the Ecofix process which employs low cost materials and consists of mixing wastes with lime, aluminum hydroxide, and silica. To evaluate the long-term behavior of solidified/stabilized (S/S) samples, their alteration under saturated conditions was studied in a water extractor, a Soxhlet-like device, used to follow the weathering of rocks. Kinetic measurements have shown that the release of Fe, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Cu was very slow, indicating a strong retention of these elements by the S/S materials prepared by the Ecofix process. To elucidate the mechanisms of retention of the trace metals, the mineral phases that existed in the S/S samples throughout and at the end of the extraction runs were studied by X-ray diffraction and by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examinations and electron microprobe analyses of the S/S samples were also performed at different stages of weathering. These observations revealed that assorted calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) were the predominant phases in the S/S preparations and that gradual alterations occurred in the structure of the investigated materials. The overall Ca/Si ratio of the C-S-H phases decreased as the enhanced alteration progressed. Although trace metals in oxide, hydroxide, and carbonate forms were found in the S/S materials, the bulk of the trace metals was incorporated in the matrix of the C-S-H phases.

International audience; Multidimensional NMR spectroscopy is widely used for studies of molecular and biomolecular structure. A major disadvantage of multidimensional NMR is the long acquisition time which, regardless of sensitivity considerations, may be needed to obtain the final multidimensional frequency domain coefficients. In this article, a method for under-sampling multidimensional NMR acquisition of sparse spectra is presented. The approach is presented in the case of two-dimensional NMR acquisitions. It relies on prior knowledge about the support in the two-dimensional frequency domain to recover an over-determined system from the under-determined system induced in the linear acquisition model when under-sampled acquisitions are performed. This over-determined system can then be solved with linear least squares. The prior knowledge is obtained efficiently at a low cost from the one-dimensional NMR acquisition, which is generally acquired as a first step in multidimensional NMR. If this one-dimensional acquisition is intrinsically sparse, it is possible to reconstruct the corresponding two-dimensional acquisition from far fewer observations than those imposed by the Nyquist criterion, and subsequently to reduce the acquisition time. Further improvements are obtained by optimizing the sampling procedure for the least-squares reconstruction using the sequential backward selection algorithm. Theoretical and experimental results are given in the case of a traditional acquisition scheme, which demonstrate reliable and fast reconstructions with acceleration factors in the range 3-6. The proposed method outperforms the CS methods (OMP, L1) in terms of the reconstruction performance, implementation and computation time. The approach can be easily extended to higher dimensions and spectroscopic imaging.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The most accurate method of clinical MR spectroscopy (MRS) interpretation remains an open question. We sought to construct a logistic regression (LR) pattern recognition model for the discrimination of neoplastic from nonneoplastic brain lesions with MR imaging–guided single-voxel proton MRS data. We compared the LR sensitivity, specificity, and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve area (Az) with the sensitivity and specificity of blinded and unblinded qualitative MRS interpretations and a choline (Cho)/N-acetylaspartate (NAA) amplitude ratio criterion. METHODS: Consecutive patients with suspected brain neoplasms or recurrent neoplasia referred for MRS were enrolled once final diagnoses were established by histopathologic examination or serial neurologic examinations, laboratory data, and imaging studies. Control spectra from healthy adult volunteers were included. An LR model was constructed with 10 input variables, including seven metabolite resonance amplitudes, unsuppressed brain water content, water line width, and the final diagnosis (neoplasm versus nonneoplasm). The LR model output was the probability of tumor, for which a cutoff value was chosen to obtain comparable sensitivity and specificity. The LR sensitivity and specificity were compared with those of qualitative blinded interpretations from two readers (designated A and B), qualitative unblinded interpretations (in aggregate) from a group of five staff neuroradiologists and a spectroscopist, and a quantitative Cho/NAA amplitude ratio > 1 threshold for tumor. Sensitivities and specificities for each method were compared with McNemar's chi square analysis for binary tests and matched data with a significance level of 5%. ROC analyses were performed where possible, and Az values were compared with Metz's method (CORROC2) with a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Of the 99 cases enrolled, 86 had neoplasms and 13 had nonneoplastic diagnoses. The discrimination of neoplastic from control spectra was trivial with the LR, reflecting high homogeneity among the control spectra. An LR cutoff probability for tumor of 0.8 yielded a specificity of 87%, a comparable sensitivity of 85%, and an area under the ROC curve of 0.96. Sensitivities, specificities, and ROC areas (where available) for the other methods were, on average, 82%, 74%, and 0.82, respectively, for readers A and B, 89% (sensitivity) and 92% (specificity) for the group of unblinded readers, and 79% (sensitivity), 77% (specificity), and 0.84 (Az) for the Cho/NAA > 1 criterion. McNemar's analysis yielded significant differences in sensitivity (n∼86 neoplasms) between the LR and reader A, and between the LR and the Cho/NAA > 1 criterion. The differences in specificity between the LR and all other methods were not significant (n∼13 nonneoplasms). Metz's analysis revealed a significant difference in Az between the LR and the Cho/NAA ratio criterion. CONCLUSION: The upper limits of sensitivity, specificity, and ROC area achieved in the construction of the LR model with MRS data demonstrate the potential for improved discrimination of neoplasm from nonneoplasm relative to either qualitative MRS interpretation by blinded readers or by quantitative interpretation with a Cho/NAA amplitude ratio threshold. The sensitivity, specificity, and ROC curve area of the LR were comparable to unblinded MRS readers who had the benefit of prior imaging studies and clinical data.
