Highlights • Application of mobile underwater in situ gamma-ray spectroscopy. • Localization of pockmarks emanating groundwater. • Radon progeny 214Bi proved an efficient radiotracer for localization purposes. • Potassium 40K is suggested as additional to radon radiotracers to localize fluid emanation areas whenever sediment is in mixture with the fluid or resuspension of sediment occurs. Abstract Eckernförde Bay in the Baltic Sea is well-known for the pockmarks areas which are located in the centre and off the southern shore-line of the bay emanating groundwater in a non-continuous but episodic way. Mobile underwater in situ gamma-ray spectroscopy is exploited proving that both 214Bi and 40K are efficient radiotracers for localization of seepage areas whenever either sediment is in mixture with the emanating fluid or resuspension of surface sediment occurs as a side effect of the fluid emanation.

Abstract

PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been detected for the biodiversity, marine food web, marine litter and underwater noise descriptors. The meta-analysis also allowed the identification of additional research themes targeting research topics that are requested to the achievement of GES. 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

The article discusses a study which investigated wind and wave potential in offshore locations of the Greek Seas. It presents an estimation of wind power based on the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics. The stochastic modeling of wind speeds is also discussed, as well as offshore wind and wave data.

Abstract

In this paper, a statistical analysis on wind and wave buoy measurements and wind and wave model forecasts obtained during a two-year period (1999-2001) is presented with reference to four characteristic near-shore sites of the Aegean Sea. The measurements are a main product of the "POSEIDON" system aiming at the monitoring and forecasting of the state of the Greek seas, operated by the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR). Although the two-year period is rather short for a thorough analysis of the local wind and wave climate, yet the obtained results, presented herein for the first time, reveal some interesting features of the corresponding wave and wind characteristics. Comparisons between the measurements and the forecast results are also performed at the locations under consideration. It is found that (i) wind speeds obtained from the POSEIDON weather forecasting system are, in general, in agreement with the measurements, except for high wind speeds which are systematically underestimated, (ii) the WAM model can successfully follow the monthly and over year trend of the evolution of wind and wave characteristics, but face significant problems for efficient sea-state forecasting. Finally, the overall pattern of the wind/wave climate for the entire Aegean Sea as obtained from the models is presented by means of the spatial distribution of the mean annual wind and sea-state intensity.
