Falls are very serious health concerns among older adults. Providing additional cutaneous and proprioceptive feedback to older adults may enhance their balance control and therefore reduce the incidents of falls. This study aimed to investigate the acute and acclimated effect of wearing waist-to-above-ankle compression garments (CGs) on balance control in community-dwelling older adults. Thirty-one older adults participated in the study. The Timed Up and Go, Berg Balance Scale, and the Fall Risk Test of the Biodex Balance System were used in a random order to examine balance control in three testing sessions 1 week apart. Results indicated wearing CGs had a significant impact on the Timed Up and Go test (p <.001), Berg Balance Scale (p =.001), and the Fall Risk Test (p =.001). For the Timed Up and Go test, participants exhibited significant improvement in both the acute (8.68 vs. 7.91 s) and acclimated effect (7.91 vs. 7.41 s) of wearing CGs. For the Berg Balance Scale, participants showed significant improvement after wearing CGs for 1 week in comparison to the no CGs condition (55.77 vs. 55.39 points). For the Fall Risk Test, participants showed a significant improvement in the acute effect of wearing CGs in comparison to the no CGs condition (1.55° vs. 1.31°). This exploratory study showed that wearing waist-to-above-ankle CGs provided a positive impact on balance control in healthy community-dwelling older adults. It lays the foundation for future studies with a larger sample size to investigate the potential benefits of wearing CGs in individuals with balance control deficits and/or other comorbidities. We have previously shown evidence that some individuals seem to consistently minimize low back loads when lifting. while others do not. However, it is unknown why. Individual differences in ability to perceive relevant sensory information may explain differences in minimization of low back loads during lifting, consistent with considering load reduction in one's movement objective in an optimal feedback control theory framework. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals' ability to perceive proprioceptive information (both force- and posture-senses) at the low back was associated with peak low back loads when performing generic or occupation-specific lifts. Seventy-two participants were recruited to perform 10 barbell (generic) and backboard (occupation-specific) lifts, while whole-body kinematics and ground reaction forces were collected. Peak low back compression and anteroposterior shear forces normalized to body mass were calculated as dependent variables. Both posture matching ability and force matching ability at the heavier force targets were associated with lower means and variability of peak low-back loads in both lift types, albeit with small effect sizes (R² 5.17). These findings support the utility of an optimal feedback control theory framework to explore factors explaining interindividual differences in low back loads during lifting. Proprioception is essential for precise movement as it helps the body transmit important data about its surroundings to the central nervous system for maintaining body posture and position. This study aimed to investigate the effect of direction and joint angle on upper limb proprioception. Thirty individuals (all males) completed a position reproduction activity in 13 directions and three joint angles. It was discovered that upper limb proprioception is dependent on joint angle, direction, and range of motion. The position reproduction error was found to be dependent on the direction, which had a significantly lower accuracy in the direction with a larger range of motion. In addition, upper limb repositioning errors increased at greater limb elevation angles. Our findings also showed that the joint angle did not significantly affect the absolute error of elbow flexion. With an increase in the elbow flexion, the increase of the gravitational moment of the upper arm and hand coupled with the increase of the muscle arm of the biceps brachii possibly causes slight changes in muscle length perceived by spindles or muscular force perceived by Golgi tendon organs. Background: Individuals with visual impairment have balance deficits; therefore, this systematic review aimed to provide comprehensive insights into the balance control of individuals with visual impairments when compared with individuals with full vision. Methods: Primary sources were obtained from eight databases including PubMed. LILACS, Science Direct, SCOPUS, CINAHL. PEDro, CENTRAL. and Web of Science. The search period covered years from inception to January 10, 2022. Results: A total of 20 studies with 29 trials with 1,280 participants were included in the systematic review. The results showed that individuals with sight had better static and dynamic balance than individuals with visual impairment (p = .001). However, individuals with visual impairment had significantly better static balance with visual perturbation and stronger static balance with visual and proprioception perturbation (p = .001). Furthermore. individuals with sight had better balance control than individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports (p = .001). Finally, individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports had better balance control than sedentary people with visual impairment (p = .001). Conclusion: individuals with visual impairment have defects in both dynamic and static balance when compared to individuals with sight. In addition. balance improved with increasing age in individuals with visual impairment while balance control was dependent on the proprioception and vestibular systems. Also, individuals with sight had better balance than individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports and individuals with visual impairment who participated in sports compared with sedentary people with visual impairment. Sensorimotor stimulation during the sensitive period is crucial for proper brain development. Kicking sports (KS) training stimulates these sensorimotor functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate if incorporating specific sensorimotor stimulation in mediolateral axis and proprioceptive inputs during KS training will improve the specific sensorimotor performance in adolescents. We assessed stability limits in 13 KS practitioners and 20 control participants. Starting from an upright position, subjects were asked to lean as far as possible (forward, backward, rightward, and leftward). Three sensory conditions were tested: (1) eyes open, (2) eyes closed, and (3) eyes closed while standing on a foam mat. We analyzed the maximal center of pressure excursion and the root means square of the center of pressure displacements. Results showed that KS group had smaller root means square and larger maximal center of pressure excursions than those of control participants in mediolateral axis in all sensory conditions. Furthermore, the results also revealed a significant smaller root means square excursion in KS group under foam mat condition compared to control group ML axis. Background: Plantar sensation and ankle proprioception occur in a stage-like variance across the life span. However, changes in adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences of plantar sensation and ankle proprioception in adolescents to older adults. Methods: A total of 212 participants were recruited in the study and were divided into four groups, including adolescents (n = 46), young adults (n = 55), middle-aged adults (n = 47), and older adults (n = 54). Plantar tactile sensitivity/tactile acuity/vibration threshold and ankle movement threshold/joint position sense/force sense were assessed in all groups. The Kruskal–Wallis H test was used to analyze the differences in Semmes–Weinstein monofilaments between different age groups in different plantar positions. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine differences in foot vibration threshold, two-point discrimination, and ankle proprioception between different age groups. Results: Significant differences were found in the Semmes–Weinstein monofilament test (p <.001), the two-point discrimination test (p <.05), and the vibration threshold test (p <.05) in the six tested plantar positions among adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults. For ankle proprioception, significant differences were found in movement thresholds in ankle plantar flexion (p =.01), ankle dorsiflexion (p <.001), ankle inversion (p <.001), and ankle eversion (p <.001), as well as relative absolute errors in the ankle force senses of ankle plantar flexion (p =.02) and ankle dorsiflexion (p =.02) across the four age groups. Introduction: Proprioception is significantly affected by dysfunction of the basal ganglia, which play an important role in sensorimotor integration. Parkinson's disease (PD), which is characterized by progressive loss of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra, leads to a variety of motor and nonmotor symptoms throughout the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine trunk position sense and to investigate its relationship with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD. Methods: The study included 35 patients with PD and 35 age-matched control subjects. Trunk position sense was determined with "trunk reposition errors." A spinal mouse was used to assess spinal posture and spinal mobility. Results: According to the Hoehn–Yahr rating scale, the majority of the patients were in Stage 1 (68.6%). Trunk position sense was found to be significantly decreased in patients with PD compared with the control group (p <.001) but was not correlated with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD (p >.05). Conclusions: This study revealed that trunk position sense was impaired in PD from the early stages of the disease. However, neither spinal posture nor spinal mobility was associated with decreased trunk proprioception. Further research into these relationships in the late stages of PD is needed. It is well-known that multitasking impairs the performance of one or both of the concomitant ongoing tasks. Previous studies have mainly focused on how a secondary task can compromise visual or auditory information processing. However, despite dual tasking being critical to motor performance, the effects of dual-task performance on proprioceptive information processing have not been studied yet. The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to investigate whether sensorimotor task performance would be affected by the dual task and if so, in which phase of the sensorimotor task performance would this negative effect occur. The kinematic variables of passive and active knee movements elicited by the leg drop test were analyzed. Thirteen young adults participated in the study. The dual task consisted of performing serial subtractions. The results showed that the dual task increased both the reaction time to counteract passive knee–joint movements in the leg drop test and the threshold to detect those movements. The dual task did not affect the speed and time during the active knee movement and the absolute angle error between the final and the target knee angles. Furthermore, the results showed that the time to complete the sensorimotor task was prolonged in dual tasking. Our findings suggest that dual tasking reduces motor performance due to slowing down proprioceptive information processing without affecting movement execution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament rupture is one of the injuries that seriously affect life and sports performance, and the anterior cruciate ligament as a stabilizing structure is irreplaceable in maintaining sports performance. In view of its severe injury manifestations, the current treatment for anterior cruciate ligament rupture is a surgery for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Since an anterior cruciate ligament injury can cause loss of mechanoreceptors, which in turn causes a reduction in proprioception, it is a great problem for patients to recover their motor performance. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the effects of proprioceptive training on clinical outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and to explore the underlying mechanisms, thereby providing more references for clinical prevention and treatment. METHODS: A computerized search of PubMed, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP databases was conducted for literature (from January 2013 to March 2023) related to proprioceptive training after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction that improves joint stability and motor balance ability. A total of 108 articles were finally included for review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Proprioceptive training can effectively improve the proprioceptive functions of patients, such as positional sense and kinesthetic sense after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and improve joint stability, postural control and motor ability. The proprioceptive training improves the proprioceptive function through three mechanisms: stimulation of periprosthetic receptors around the knee joint, activation of spinal reflex stimulation, reinforcement of motor control in the brain, and enhancement of cognitive processing. The proprioceptive training may improve proprioceptive functions by activating the potential mechanisms of growth associated protein-43 activity, Piezo2 mechanotransducer, and NT-3/TrkC signaling pathway. Hydrotherapy is the mainstay in the early stages, while neuromuscular training, individual strength training and visual feedback training are prioritized in the middle and late stages. There exists an as-yet-unsegmented reconstructive surgery graft, sex, and a lack of devices or proprioceptive training methods based on the idea of combining multiple sensory stimuli. Purpose: After stroke, upper limb somatosensation can be impaired which affects motor control. Vision is often used to compensate for this. A clinical assessment which assesses the combined sensorimotor function in the absence of vision would be beneficial in studies targeting sensorimotor improvement. Methods and materials: We adapted the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) to be performed without vision and called this modified version the sensorimotor ARAT (sARAT). Sixty healthy participants and 22 participants with chronic stroke performed the ARAT, sARAT, Fugl-Meyer upper extremity assessment (FM-UE) and Erasmus modified Nottingham sensory assessment (EmNSA). Discriminative validity of sARAT was evaluated by comparing performance between healthy participants and participants with chronic stroke. Convergent validity was evaluated by correlating sARAT with FM-UE and EmNSA. Results: Participants with stroke performed worse on the sARAT compared to healthy participants (p < 0.001), with median scores of 52 (IQR 32-57) and 57 (IQR 57-57), respectively. The sARAT showed high correlations with FM-UE and EmNSA (r = 0.80-0.90). Conclusions: The sARAT shows good discriminative and convergent validity in people with chronic stroke. It allows a quick assessment of the combined upper limb sensorimotor function, by performing the well-known ARAT with the eyes closed. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The sensorimotor adaptation of the Action Research Arm Test (sARAT) is a clinical assessment of upper limb activity which is performed with the eyes closed. Combining the gold standard ARAT with the sensorimotor adaptation sARAT can inform about the influence of somatosensory impairments on upper limb activity in stroke survivors when vision is blocked. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine the normative vestibulo- ocular reflex gain output values of the computerized rotational head impulse test (crHIT) with stationary visual targets (earth bound) in healthy participants in each decade age band of life: 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+ years. Method: Seventy-seven community-dwelling participants (10-85 years of age) with normal lateral semicircular canal (SCC) functioning and no symptoms or history of vestibular dysfunction were recruited through convenience sampling and assessed with the crHIT using stationary targets. These participants were assessed using two standard protocols in a randomized order. Results: Results from 77 participants (Mage = 46 years; 43 women, 34 men) were analyzed. Pearson's correlation coefficient and simple linear regression indicated a statistically significant relationship between crHIT gain output and age (p >.05) for right gain, 1030°/s², and left gain, 1005°/s². Although a statistically significant relationship was found, the slope was minor, demonstrating that the clinical effect of age on crHIT gain output was insignificant. Furthermore, no statistically significant relationship exists between crHIT gain output and gender (p > .05). Age-dependent normative data were calculated using the 2.5th and 97.5th confidence interval (CI) percentile method. The responses of angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) gain values for crHIT are expected to occur within the range for lower limit reference interval (RI) of 0.85-0.9 and upper limit RI of 1.11-1.18 for 1030°/s² and lower limit RI of 0.86-0.92 and upper limit RI of 1.13-1.16 for 1005°/s² .It can be expected that 90% CI of the population with normal lateral SCC function- ing will have aVOR gain values that fall within this range. Conclusion: Despite a statistically significant relationship that exists with aVOR gain output and age, the changes are minor, declining by 0.0088 units per 10 years, justifying the same normative data for all decade age bands. It is unclear how explicit knowledge of an externally imposed mismatch between visual and proprioceptive cues of hand position affects perceptual recalibration. The Bayesian causal inference framework might suggest such knowledge should abolish the visual and proprioceptive recalibration that occurs when individuals perceive these cues as coming from the same source (their hand), while the visuomotor adaptation literature suggests explicit knowledge of a cue conflict does not eliminate implicit compensatory processes. Here we compared visual and proprioceptive recalibration in three groups with varying levels of knowledge about the visuo-proprioceptive cue conflict. All participants estimated the position of visual, proprioceptive, or combined targets related to their left index fingertip, with a 70 mm visuo-proprioceptive offset gradually imposed. Groups 1, 2, and 3 received no information, medium information, and high information, respectively, about the offset. Information was manipulated using instructional and visual cues. All groups performed the task similarly at baseline in terms of variance, weighting, and integration. Results suggest the three groups recalibrated vision and proprioception differently, but there was no difference in variance or weighting. Participants who received only instructional cues about the mismatch (Group 2) did not recalibrate less, on average, than participants provided no information about the mismatch (Group 1). However, participants provided instructional cues and extra visual cues of their hands during the perturbation (Group 3) demonstrated significantly less recalibration than other groups. The study objective is to test general- and sport-specific adaption during a single training on the Flexibility Trainer. The device is designed to trigger residual muscle tone decreases of the hip-joint muscles by providing (nearly) isokinetic resistance during a full range of motion strength training in adduction/abduction and flexion/extension direction. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as kinematics of double side kicks were analysed on 15 participants before and after training (or rest for controls) to assess general flexibility and sport-specific movement range. Tests were recorded by a Vicon® motion capturing system. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as leg vector spreading angles (VSA) at different nodes of the kick were selected to determine adaptions of active and passive flexibility. Normalised hip joint moments, movement velocities and VSA were calculated to evaluate the training with the device. ANOVAs with 4-repeated measures and Friedman tests were performed to identify time differences and Bonferroni post-hoc test to identify between-subject effects. Significant differences were found for both static flexibility tests (Flexion = 13.65%; Abduction = 9.94%) and the VSA at specific action phases (≤15.15%). Results indicate that short-term adaptions when training with the Flexibility Trainer are exceeding comparable literature showing improved flexibility and sport-specific performance. Introduction All branches of the U.S. Military have a running component of their physical readiness testing battery. Running-related musculoskeletal injuries affect 20 to 40% of DoD Service Members each year. Running form has not historically been addressed with military running-related injuries. To assess the utility of a structured gait retaining protocol designed to treat the onset of running-related pain and/or injury by correcting identified biomechanical risk factors for injury and improve clinical outcomes. Study Design Case series. Materials and Methods A total of 160 Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) with running-related lower-body musculoskeletal injuries were referred by a physical therapist for a multisession gait retraining program termed "Run with CLASS" (C adence, L ean, A lignment, S oft-landing, S trike). Run with CLASS utilized various drills to emphasize impact progression, proximal strengthening, and proprioception and spatial awareness. Results Results revealed that the implemented gait retraining protocol significantly improved running parameters following lower-body injury as evidenced by increased cadence, improved functional assessment scores, and a marked transition from predominantly heel strike to forefoot strike patterns during running. Conclusions A 3-week supervised gait retraining program focused on the gait retraining program termed "Run with CLASS" (C adence, L ean, A lignment, S oft-landing, S trike) was successful in altering biomechanics of self-selected running gait by increasing cadence and transitioning ADSMs to a forefoot foot strike. Background/Aims Methods Results Interpretation Peripheral neuropathies perturbate the sensorimotor system, causing difficulties in walking‐related motor tasks and, eventually, falls. Falls result in functional dependency and reliance on healthcare, especially in older persons. We investigated if peripheral neuropathy is a genuine risk factor for falls in the elderly and if quantification of postural control via posturography is helpful in identifying subjects at risk of falls.Seventeen older persons with a clinical polyneuropathic syndrome of the lower limbs and converging electrophysiology were compared with 14 older persons without polyneuropathy. All participants were characterized via quantitative motor and sensory testing, neuropsychological assessment, and self‐questionnaires. Video‐nystagmography and caloric test excluded vestibulocochlear dysfunction. For further analysis, all subjects were stratified into fallers and non‐fallers. Overall, 28 patients underwent computerized dynamic posturography for individual fall risk assessment. Regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors and predictive posturography parameters.Neuropathy is an independent risk factor for falls in the elderly, while no differences were observed for age, gender, weight, frailty, DemTect test, timed “Up & Go” test, and dizziness‐related handicap score. In computerized dynamic posturography, fallers stepped more often to regain postural control in challenging conditions, while the Rhythmic Weight Shift test showed a lack of anterior‐posterior bidirectional voluntary control.Our study confirms peripheral neuropathy as a risk factor for older persons' falls. Fallers frequently used stepping to regain postural control. The voluntary control of this coping movement was impaired. To investigate the effect of dual-task training on balance and knee proprioception in both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing conditions in older adults with significant imbalance and high risk of falling. This pre-posttest experimental design included 83 older adults (43 males, 40 females), selected based on age criteria (65–75 years) and specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants underwent dual-task training consisting of 30-minute sessions, three times per week, for four weeks (totaling 12-sessions). Measures included Berg Balance Scale and knee proprioception deficit before and after dual-task training. The study showed statistically significant effect of dual-task training on balance (p < 0.001) and knee proprioception in both weight-bearing (p < 0.001) and non-weight-bearing (p < 0.001) in older adults. Pre-and post-measurements of independent variables between male and female older adults showed no significant difference. Dual-task training improves balance and knee proprioception in both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing conditions in older individuals, thereby enhancing stability and reducing the risk of falls. To compare the changes in outcomes of balance and postural control after balance training exercise and gaze stability exercise in the elderly population with fall risk. After the screening process, 44 subjects were randomized into three groups: Experimental Group A (Balance training exercises, BTE); Experimental Group B (Gaze stability exercises, GSE), and Control Group C (Fall prevention education only). The outcome measures were center of pressure (COP) range, COP sway, reaction time, proprioception, static balance, Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance (CTSIB), and Short Falls Efficacy Scale (SFES). The pre and post-data were recorded at baseline and after 8 weeks. The normality of the distribution was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Demographic data and baseline measures were compared using one-way ANOVA considering group as between factor and mixed model ANOVA was used to find out the group effect and time effect and time × group interaction effect. Statistical significance was indicated if p ≤ 0.05. GSE had significant changes only in CTSIB 4 whereas BTE had significant changes in CTSIB 4, 5, and 6. COP range showed a significant time effect in the front direction (p = 0.02). For proprioception, there was a significant time effect in the left (p = 0.018) and right direction (p = 0.005), whereas changes in front and back directions were found to be insignificant. SFES showed a significant time effect (p < 0.001), group effect (p = 0.21), and time × group interaction effect (p < 0.001). BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) presents neuromuscular control and functional performance difficulties. Although ankle-focused rehabilitation is widely practised, the relative effects of exercises targeting thoracic mobility and lumbopelvic stabilization in addressing CAI have not been thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to compare the effects of thoracic mobility and lumbopelvic stabilization exercises in patients with CAI. METHODS: The study was designed as a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial. A total of 30 participants (mean age = 31.93 ± 7.31; 21F/9M) who scored 27 points or on the Cumberland ankle instability tool voluntarily were enrolled in the study. The participants were randomly divided into two groups. In addition to the rehabilitation protocols, each participant was given a home exercise program, including ankle-strengthening exercises (3 times a week). The first group trained with thoracic mobility (TM), while the second group did lumbopelvic stabilization (LS) exercises under supervision twice a week for eight weeks. Participants' pre and post-treatment assessments spanned an 8-week rehabilitation period, during which ankle and hip joint range of motion measurements were obtained using an electronic goniometer. Additionally, dynamic balance was assessed through the Y balance test, while ankle proprioception was evaluated using joint position sense measurements. The flexibility was assessed with an active straight leg raise test. RESULTS: Y balance, CAIT, and active straight leg raise test scores were improved in the eighth week in the thoracic mobility group (p < 0.05), while only active straight leg raise test and CAIT scores were significantly different in the lumbopelvic stabilization group (p < 0.05) according to intra group variables. In comparing the post-treatment scores between the groups, the thoracic mobility group had superior results in the joint position sense test for the right side of the hip and plantarflexion. BACKGROUND: Cryotherapy is widely utilized for therapeutic purposes, yet its specific effects on knee joint proprioception and quadriceps muscle performance in healthy individuals remain unclear. This study addresses this gap by examining the impact of a 20-minute cryotherapy session on knee joint proprioception and related muscle parameters in a cohort of healthy college students. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of cryotherapy on knee joint proprioception and quadriceps muscle peak moment, work and power in healthy college male and female students. METHODS: Thirty-two healthy students, aged 19–23, underwent a 20-minute cryotherapy session using Cryogel packs applied to the anterior thigh and knee. An isokinetic dynamometer measured knee joint proprioception and quadriceps muscle parameters before, immediately after, 10-min, and 20-min post-cryotherapy. RESULTS: Proprioception values did not significantly differ between genders or post-tests (p > 0.05). However, the female group exhibited significantly lower moment, power, and work values compared to males (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed within or between post-tests in moment, power, and work for both genders (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A 20-minute cryotherapy application demonstrated no adverse effects on knee joint proprioception or quadriceps muscle metrics in healthy college students, supporting the safety of cryotherapy in this context. BACKGROUND: The acute and chronic effects of stretching preceding exercises on strength, power and muscular endurance are still not entirely clear in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To verify the acute and chronic effects of the main types of stretching (static, dynamic, PNF, and ballistic) on muscle strength, power, and endurance. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in: PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, Scopus, Science Direct, and CENTRAL. The methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. Meta-analysis were performed using the standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS: 43 studies were included in the systematic review and 30 in the meta-analysis calculations. Only two studies showed high methodological quality. In general, static stretching had an impact on the potentiated the gain in muscle strength of the lower limbs in the long term (0.60 [0.20–1.00]). The acute (ES = 0.38 [0.05–0.70]) and long-term (ES = 1.04 [0.21–1.88]) dynamic stretching was able to potentiate the gain of muscle power in the lower limbs, while the acute PNF had an impact on the worsening of the muscular endurance (ES = 1.68 [0.83–2.53]). CONCLUSIONS: When the training objective is linked to acute effects, dynamic stretching should be prioritized before the main activity. Lower back disorders (LBDs) affect a large proportion of the population, and treatment for LBDs have been shifting toward individualized, patient-centered approaches. LBDs are typically associated with poor proprioception. Therefore, there has been a recent uptake in the utilization of wearable sensors that can administer biofeedback in various industrial, clinical, and performance-based settings to improve lumbar proprioception. The aim of this study was to investigate whether wearable sensor-derived acute auditory biofeedback can be used to improve measures of gross lumbar proprioception. To assess this, healthy participants completed an active target repositioning protocol, followed by a training period where lumbar-spine posture referenced auditory feedback was provided for select targets. Target re-matching abilities were captured before and after acute auditory biofeedback training to extract measures related to accuracy and precision across spine flexion targets (i.e., 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% maximum). Results suggest a heterogenous response to proprioceptive training whereby certain individuals and spine flexion targets experienced positive effects (i.e., improved accuracy and precision). Specifically, results suggest that mid-range flexion targets (i.e., 40-60% maximum flexion) benefited most from the acute auditory feedback training. The present study investigated the effect of visual offset (visuo-proprioceptive mismatch) in joint repositioning task in a three-dimensional virtual reality (VR) environment when participants were instructed to ignore vision. Twenty-five physically healthy young individuals performed shoulder joint position sense test. Repositioning accuracy was tested under two visual conditions, accurate and offset visions, and two instructions, no guidance or ignore vision. In accurate vision trials, the virtual hand of the tested limb seen in VR was congruent with where the participant placed their hand. In the offset vision condition, the virtual hand was seen 8° above or below their actual hand in the vertical plane. Repositioning error (i.e. constant error) in offset vision trials was lower when the participants were instructed to ignore vision compared to when no instruction about the visual offset was given (p < 0.001). However, constant error in offset vision trials was larger than accurate vision trials when the participants tried to ignore vision in both visual conditions (p < 0.001). Our results suggest that humans may be able to down-weight vision to some extent by conscious effort, while the influence of vision is difficult to eliminate when vision is present. The distal tibiofibular joint is described as a syndesmosis. The syndesmosis is important to the structural integrity of the ankle joint by maintaining the proximity of the tibia, fibula, and talus. Syndesmotic or high ankle sprains, involving the syndesmotic ligaments, pose a significant rehabilitative challenge due to their intricate anatomy, prolonged recovery periods following injury, and high susceptibility to persistent disability. Traditional management strategies have often been conservative, marked by lengthy periods of immobilization and a gradual return to activity. Severe syndesmotic injuries with diastasis have been treated surgically with screw fixation which may require a second intervention to remove the hardware and carries an inherent risk of breaking the screw during rehabilitation. Another fixation technique, the Tightrope™, has gained popularity in treating ankle syndesmosis injuries. The TightRope™ involves inserting Fiberwire® through the tibia and fibula, which allows for stabilization of the ankle mortise and normal range of motion. The accelerated rehabilitation protocol promotes early weight-bearing and has been shown to expedite the return to sport. This emerging strategy has shown promise in reducing recovery time as it is now possible to return to sport in less than 2 months after a tightrope repair and accelerated rehabilitation, compared with 3-6 months post screw fixation. Background: Neurofeedback training (NFT) can aid in the treatment of the abnormal patterns of the brain brought on by physical injury, enhancing cognitive and behavioral abilities. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of combining neuromuscular training (NMT) and NFT (NMT+NFT) with NMT alone in rehabilitating athletes with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Hypothesis: NMT+NFT will be more effective than NMT alone. Study Design: A 3-arm, single-blind randomized controlled trial. Level of Evidence: Level 2. Methods: A total number of 62 athletes, aged 18 to 25 years, with CAI, participated in this study. The study subjects were allocated randomly to 3 groups: 21 cases in the control group, 21 cases in the combination group (CG) receiving NMT+NFT, and 20 cases in the neuromuscular group (NG) practicing NMT alone, undergoing exercises related to their groups for 8 weeks. Data were recorded and analyzed before and after the 8-week training program. The primary outcome measures were postural sway indices; secondary outcomes included ankle proprioception and biopsychosocial indices. Results: NMT+NFT was more effective than NMT alone in terms of improving postural control during single- and 2-legged standing positions under the conditions of eyes closed and eyes open, proprioception at 20° of plantar flexion, as well as anxiety and depression in athletes with CAI. However, the findings revealed that NMT+NFT and NMT alone could both improve such indices. Conclusion: NMT+NFT as a treatment protocol improved postural control, ankle proprioception, anxiety, and depression greater than NMT alone. Clinical Relevance: A combined protocol of NFT and NMT led to greater improvement compared with NMT alone. OBJECTIVE: Chronic ankle instability is mainly characterized by symptoms such as muscle weakness, intermittent pain, and repeated sprains, which seriously affect exercise and daily life. Loss of proprioception, prolongation of fibular reaction time, and weakening of valgus force may be the main symptoms of chronic ankle instability, so exercise intervention can effectively improve the symptoms related to ankle instability. Meta-analysis was used to quantitatively evaluate the effect of balance training on the rehabilitation intervention of chronic ankle instability, providing a reliable theoretical basis and practical basis for chronic ankle instability patients to scientifically formulate exercise prescriptions. METHODS: The randomized controlled trial of balance training on symptom rehabilitation and dynamic equilibrium of patients with chronic ankle instability was retrieved on CNKI, VIP, Web of Science, and PubMed. The literature was published from the inception to November 23, 2022. Two reviewers were included to evaluate the quality of the included literature based on the physical therapy evidence scale. The primary outcome measure is the Self Functional Rating Scale, and the secondary outcome measure is the Star Shift Balance Test, both of which are continuous variables. Forest mapping, meta-regression, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias evaluation were performed on the included literature using RevMan 5.3 and Stata-SE 15 software. RESULTS: (1) A total of 18 articles of randomized controlled trials were screened and 641 patients with chronic ankle instability were included in the study. Overall, the methodological quality of the literature was relatively high. (2) Meta-analysis results showed that balance training improved the functional rehabilitation effect of chronic ankle instability patients (SMD=0.82, 95% CI:0.41-1.23, P < 0.000 1). Meta-regression exhibited that intervention time might be the main reason for heterogeneity (P=0.008). (3) The subgroup analysis results revealed that 6 weeks of intervention (SMD=0.98, 95% CI:0.31-1.65, P=0.03), more than 3 interventions per week (SMD=0.87, 95% CI:0.30-1.44, P=0.003), and each intervention time less than 20 minutes (SMD=0.89, 95% CI:0.61-1.66, P < 0.000 1) were the best rehabilitation plans to improve the functional rehabilitation effect of chronic ankle instability patients. (4) Meta-analysis results also showed that balance training improved the stretching degree of the anterior side (SMD=0.56, 95% CI:0.31-0.80, P < 0.05), posterior inner side (SMD=0.88, 95% CI:0.45-1.32, P < 0.05), and posterior outer side (SMD=0.84, 95% CI:0.22-1.46, P < 0.05) of the star shift balance test. CONCLUSION: Current clinical evidence shows that balance training can improve ankle instability symptoms and elevate dynamic equilibrium ability in chronic ankle instability patients. Background: Temporomandibular joint has biomechanical and neurological interactions with cervical region in a complex functioning that is addressed as cranio-cervical mandibular system. Subjects and methods: In a prospective cohort study of 67 patients, their mean age 24.3 ± 5.6 years of both genders with temporomandibular disorder "bruxism," patients had fulfilled a questionnaire regarding bruxism manifestations. Pain pressure algometer was used to assess pain pressure threshold for trigger point in masseter, temporalis, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius, and bubble inclinometer was used to assess cervical proprioception for all cervical ranges. Results: There was a statistical significant indirect weak correlation between proprioception error of cervical flexion and pain pressure threshold of masseter (r = − 0.333) (p = 0.006), between proprioception error of cervical flexion and pain pressure threshold of trapezius (r = − 0.363) (p = 0.003), and also between proprioception error of cervical left-side bending and pain pressure threshold of trapezius (r − 0.298; p 0.014), while there was significant direct weak correlation between proprioception error of cervical left rotation and cervical bending to left (r 0.315; p 0.009), where the p-value was < 0.05. Emotional feelings are putatively ascribed to central representation of bodily states in the context of expectation and uncertainty in both internal state and external world. Neurodivergent people are more likely to experience co-occurring mental health challenges, although mechanistic insights underpinning this association are scarce. We therefore undertook a study to test whether imprecise processing of proprioceptive error signals may underlie the connection between neurodivergence and emotional dysregulation. In a cohort of people with complex chronic conditions, including chronic pain/fatigue, and complex trauma, and in a comparison group, we assessed presence of neurodivergence, variant connective tissue manifested through joint hypermobility, and emotional dysregulation. We present a data-informed conceptual model showing that variant connective tissue determines whether proprioceptive surprise is linked with emotional dysregulation in neurodivergent individuals. We suggest that future research in this area may have important clinical implications for the interaction of mental and physical wellbeing in neurodivergent people. Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) significantly affects athletic performance and increases the risk of recurrent ankle sprains. Stroboscopic Glasses (SG) may enhance proprioceptive feedback and postural control. We aimed to evaluate the augmented effects of Proprioceptive Feedback Training (PFT) combined with SG in athletes with CAI. We conducted a single-blinded randomized controlled trial with participants assigned to the PFT+SG or PFT alone groups. The interventions were administered over an eight-week period. Improvements in the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure Sport subscale (FAAM-S), Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) Questionnaire, Joint Position Sense (JPS) error value, postural stability via the Balance Velocity Test (BVT), Functional Performance Tests (FPTs), and giving-way episodes were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Substantial improvements in FAAM-S and IdFAI scores were observed in the PFT+SG group compared to those in the PFT group. JPS and BVT were significantly higher in the PFT+SG group than in the PFT group. FPTs and giving-way episodes were significantly higher in the PFT+SG group than in the PFT group. The inclusion of SG in PFT significantly enhanced rehabilitation outcomes in athletes with CAI. Background: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare multisystemic genetic disorder with motor hallmarks of myotonia, muscle weakness and wasting. DM1 patients have an increased risk of falling of multifactorial origin, and proprioceptive and vestibular deficits can contribute to this risk. Abnormalities of muscle spindles in DM1 have been known for years. This observational cross-sectional study was based on the hypothesis of impaired cervical proprioception caused by alterations in the neck spindles. Methods: Head position sense was measured in 16 DM1 patients and 16 age- and gender-matched controls. A head-to-target repositioning test was requested from blindfolded participants. Their head was passively rotated approximately 30° leftward or rightward and flexed or extended approximately 25°. Participants had to replicate the imposed positions. An optoelectronic system was adopted to measure the angular differences between the reproduced and the imposed positions (joint position error, JPE, °) concerning the intended (sagittal, horizontal) and unintended (including the frontal) planar projections. In DM1 patients, JPEs were correlated with clinical and balance measures. Static balance in DM1 patients was assessed through dynamic posturography. Results: The accuracy and precision of head repositioning in the intended sagittal and horizontal error components did not differ between DM1 and controls. On the contrary, DM1 patients showed unintended side-bending to the left and the right: the mean [95%CI] of frontal JPE was −1.29° [−1.99°, −0.60°] for left rotation and 0.98° [0.28°, 1.67°] for right rotation. The frontal JPE of controls did not differ significantly from 0° (left rotation: 0.17° [−0.53°, 0.87°]; right rotation: −0.22° [−0.91°, 0.48°]). Frontal JPE differed between left and right rotation trials (p < 0.001) only in DM1 patients. No correlation was found between JPEs and measures from dynamic posturography and clinical scales. Introduction: Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Europe. In the case of stroke survival (almost 70%), only 25% of patients recover completely, while the remaining 75% will undergo a rehabilitation phase that varying from months to years. The primary outcomes of a stroke involve motor impairment in the upper limbs, resulting in a partial or complete inability to move the limb on the right or left side, depending on the affected hemisphere. Furthermore, the motor deficit distorts the proprioception of the body and the embodiment ability of the injured limb. This could be rehabilitated through the paradigm of body illusion that modulates the motor rehabilitation. The present protocol aims to investigate the effectiveness of a Virtual Reality system for sensorimotor and proprioception upper limb deficit compared to a traditional upper limb rehabilitation program. Method: This study has a randomized and controlled design with control and experimental groups, and 4 measurement times: pre-intervention, immediately after the intervention, and two follow-ups (at 6 and 12 months). The inclusion criteria are: (a) Being 18 to 85 years old, both males and females; (b) Suffering from ischemic or haemorrhagic stroke; (c) The stroke event must have occurred from two to eighteen months before recruitment; (d) Patients must have moderate to severe upper limb motor deficit, and the alteration of sensorimotor and proprioception abilities of the injury upper limb; (e) Patients must understand and sign the written consent for enrolment. Background: Dysmetria, the inability to accurately estimate distance in motor tasks, is a characteristic clinical feature of cerebellar injury. Even though subjective dysmetria can be quickly detected during the neurological examination with the finger-to-nose test, objective quantification of reaching accuracy for clinical assessment is still lacking. Emerging VR technology allows for the delivery of rich multisensory environmental stimuli with a high degree of control. Furthermore, recent improvements in the hand-tracking feature offer an opportunity to closely examine the speed, accuracy, and consistency of fine hand movements and proprioceptive function. This study aims to investigate the application of virtual reality (VR) with hand tracking in the rapid quantification of reaching accuracy at the bedside for patients with cerebellar stroke (CS). Methods and results: Thirty individuals (10 CS patients and 20 age-matched neurologically healthy controls) performed a simple task that allowed us to measure reaching accuracy using a VR headset (Oculus Quest 2). During this task, the participant was asked to reach for a target placed along a horizontal sixty-degree arc. Once the fingertip passed through the arc, the target immediately extinguished. 50% of the trials displayed a visible, real-time rendering of the hand as the participant reached for the target (visible hand condition), while the remaining 50% only showed the target being extinguished (invisible hand condition). The invisible hand condition isolates proprioception-guided movements by removing the visibility of the participant's hand. Reaching error was calculated as the difference in degrees between the location of the target, and where the fingertip contacted the arc. Both CS patients and age-matched controls displayed higher average reaching error and took longer to perform a reaching motion in the invisible hand condition than in the visible hand condition. Reaching error was higher in CS than in controls in the invisible hand condition but not in the visible hand condition. Average time taken to perform each trial was higher in CS than in controls in the invisible hand conditions but not in the visible hand condition. Conclusions: Reaching accuracy assessed by VR offers a non-invasive and rapid approach to quantifying fine motor functions in clinical settings. Furthermore, this technology enhances our understanding of proprioceptive function in patients with visuomotor disabilities by allowing the isolation of proprioception from vision. Future studies with larger cohorts and longitudinal designs will examine the quantitative changes in reaching accuracy after stroke and explore the long-term benefits of VR in functional recovery. Background: Considering the neuromuscular alterations in Achilles tendinopathy (AT), sensorimotor training (SMT) might be beneficial to restore the neuromuscular capacity of the muscle-tendon complex and thereby improve patients' functions and alleviate symptoms. However, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of SMT on improving functional (e.g., strength) and pain outcomes in this population. Thus, the purpose of this study was to synthesize current evidence to analyze the efficacy of SMT in people with AT. Methods: A systematic electronic search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials frominception toDecember 2023. Studies applying SMT in people with AT investigating functional or clinical pain outcomes were considered. Protocols had to incorporate balance, stabilization, proprioception, or vibration training. Patients with insertional or mid-portion AT (=18 years age) diagnosed with clinical or sonographic evaluation were included. Results: The search yielded 823 records. A total of three randomized controlled trials were considered eligible for the analysis. Each trial used a different SMT protocol: balance training, balance with stabilization training, or whole-body vibration training (WBVT) with other co-interventions. Most functional and pain parameters improved compared to baseline. The first study reported a decrease in pain and an increase in performance (i.e., countermovement jump height) and endurance (i.e., number of heel-raises) by 12-week use of a balance training in addition to isometric, concentric/eccentric, and eccentric exercises. The second study evaluated the four weeks effect of SMT (balance and stabilization training plus eccentric exercises) in addition to passive physiotherapy (deep frictions, ice, ultrasound), resulting in an increased plantarflexion peak torque and reduced pain levels. The third study investigating WBVT reported at 12 weeks an increase in flexibility and a decrease in tendon pain. Discussion: SMT in addition to other co-interventions (i.e., eccentric, isometric, concentric/eccentric training, physiotherapy) showed improvements in strength, performance, muscle flexibility, and alleviated clinical outcomes of pain. SMT might therefore be useful as part of a multimodal treatment strategy protocol in patients suffering from AT. After stroke, the poorer recovery of motor function of upper extremities compared to other body parts is a longstanding problem. Based on our recent functional MRI evidence on healthy volunteers, this perspective paper proposes systematic hand motor rehabilitation utilizing the plasticity of interhemispheric interaction between motor cortices and following its developmental rule. We first discuss the effectiveness of proprioceptive intervention on the paralyzed (immobile) hand synchronized with voluntary movement of the intact hand to induce muscle activity in the paretic hand. In healthy participants, we show that this bilateral proprioceptive-motor coupling intervention activates the bilateral motor cortices (= bilaterally active mode), facilitates interhemispheric motorcortical functional connectivity, and augments muscle activity of the passivelymoved hand. Next, we propose training both hands to perform different movements, which would be effective for stroke patients who becomes able to manage to move the paretic hand. This bilaterally different movement training may guide the motor cortices into left-right independent mode to improve interhemispheric inhibition and hand dexterity, because we have shown in healthy older adults that this training reactivates motor-cortical interhemispheric inhibition (= left-right independent mode) declined with age, and can improve hand dexterity. Transition of both motor cortices from the bilaterally active mode to the left-right independent mode is a developmental rule of hand motor function and a common feature of motor function recovery after stroke. Hence, incorporating the brain's inherent capacity for spontaneous recovery and adhering to developmental principles may be crucial considerations in designing effective rehabilitation strategies. Objective Total knee replacement (TKR) is a common solution for patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis (OA). Still, fall rates remain relatively high after surgery. TKR may alter pain and knee function, balance control, and proprioception. However, given the role of complex (dual-task) walking in fall prediction for older adults, it is unknown how TKR alters the attentional demand of walking in older adults. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of TKR on dual-task walking among older adults. Methods Participants were evaluated 1 month before surgery and 4.5 months after surgery. Participants walked along an instrumented 7-meter path for 1 minute with and without a cognitive task (serial-3 subtraction). Pain and knee function, knee proprioception, dynamic balance, and balance confidence, as well as dual-task costs (DTC) were compared before and after the surgery and factors associated with change in gait DTCs were assessed. Results Thirty-eight participants completed the study (age 72.6 years, SD = 4.9; 11 men). A significant decrease in pain was found following TKR, with no change in balance, balance confidence, or proprioception. There were no differences in gait DTCs before and after the surgery. However, change in dynamic balance, specifically reactive postural control and dynamic gait, predicted changes in gait speed and stride time DTCs. Conclusion The absence of an effect of TKR on gait DTCs can potentially underlie increased fall risk after TKR. Results from this study emphasize the significance of balance as a measure and focal point for rehabilitation after TKR. Impact This study contributes to our understanding of the attentional cost of walking in people before and after TKR, as well as to factors associated with it. Long-duration bedrest impairs upright postural and locomotor control, prompting the need for assessment tools to predict the effects of deconditioning on post-bedrest outcome measures. We developed a tilt board mounted vertically with a horizontal air-bearing sled as a potential supine assessment tool for a future bedrest study. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the association between supine proprioceptive assessments on the tilt board and upright functional mobility. Seventeen healthy participants completed variations of a supine tilt board task and an upright functional mobility task (FMT), which is an established obstacle avoidance course. During the supine tasks, participants lay on the air-bearing sled with axial loading toward the tilt board. Participants tilted the board to capture virtual targets on an overhead monitor during 30 s trials. The tasks included two dynamic tasks (i.e., double-leg stance matching mediolateral tilt targets over ±3° or ±9° ranges) and two static tasks (i.e., single-leg stance maintaining a central target position). The performances during the dynamic tasks were significantly correlated with the FMT time to completion. The dominant-leg static task performance showed a moderate trend with the FMT time to completion. The results indicate that supine proprioceptive assessments may be associated with upright ambulation performance, and thus, support the proposed application in bedrest studies. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate whether an external reference frame contributes to tactile localization in blindfolded healthy humans. In a session, the right forearm was passively moved until the elbow finally reached to the target angle, and participants reached the left index finger to the right middle fingertip. The locus of the right middle fingertip indicated by the participants deviated in the direction of the elbow extension when vibration was provided to the biceps brachii muscle during the passive movement. This finding indicates that proprioception contributes to the identification of the spatial coordinate of the specific body part in an external reference frame. In another session, the tactile stimulus was provided to the dorsal of the right hand during the passive movement, and the participants reached the left index finger to the spatial locus at which the tactile stimulus was provided. Vibration to the biceps brachii muscle did not change the perceived locus of the tactile stimulus indicated by the left index finger. This finding indicates that an external reference frame does not contribute to tactile localization during the passive movement. Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) demonstrate altered movement patterns when their vision is disturbed during simple tasks, such as single-legged standing and walking. However, it remains unclear whether visual disruption by stroboscopic glasses alters movement patterns during landing-cutting movements, considered highly demanding sport maneuvers that mimic a typical athletic movement. To identify altered lower extremity kinematics and muscle activation when vision is disrupted by stroboscopic glasses during landing-cutting tasks in individuals with CAI. Case-control study. Laboratory. A total of 18 individuals with CAI (age = 22.3 ± 2.3 years, height = 1.75 ± 0.1 m, mass = 72.5 ± 9.8 kg) and 18 matched healthy controls (age = 21.7 ± 2.3 years, height = 1.75 ± 0.1 m, mass = 71.9 ± 10.3 kg). All participants performed 5 trials of a landing-cutting task with (SV) and without (NSV) stroboscopic glasses. Frontal- and sagittal-plane lower extremity kinematics and 6 lower extremity muscle activations during the stance phase of a landing-cutting task in the SV and NSV conditions. Individuals with CAI demonstrated more ankle-inversion angle from 18% to 22% and from 60% to 100% of the stance phase and more peroneus longus activation from initial contact to 18% of the stance phase under the SV condition than under the NSV condition. We observed no differences in knee- and hip-joint angles between the visual conditions for both groups. When wearing stroboscopic glasses, individuals with CAI showed altered movement patterns, including increased ankle-inversion angle and peroneus longus activation during the stance phase of a landing-cutting task. Hip osteoarthritis and total hip arthroplasty imply damaged articular and periarticular structures responsible for proprioception, and this damage may impair the accurate perception of body-weight distribution. In this study, we investigated proprioceptive abilities and accuracy perceiving body-weight distribution in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, and we assessed the associations between these abilities and body perception accuracy with functional mobility testing in 20 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty and 20 age-matched healthy participants. We assessed (a) absolute error in hip joint position sense (AE-JPS), (b) absolute error in body-weight distribution (AE-BWD) during standing and sit-to-stand tasks with open and closed eyes, and (c) functional mobility with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). We assessed patients undergoing hip arthroplasty before (T0) and five days after their surgery (T1), while control participants underwent a single evaluation. Relative to controls, participants undergoing surgery showed higher AE-JPS at 15° of hip flexion at T0 (p =.003) and at T1 (p =.007), greater AE-BWD during sit-to-stand with open eyes at T1 (p =.014) and with closed eyes at both T0 (p =.014) and at T1 (p <.001), and worse TUG at both T0 (p =.009) and T1 (p <.001). AE-BWD during sit-to-stand with closed eyes positively correlated with TUG at T0 (r = 0.55, p =.011) and at T1 (r = 0.51, p =.027). These findings suggested that impairments in body-weight distribution perception were evident both before and immediately after total hip arthroplasty, suggesting that these impairments may regularly mark these patients' functional mobility problems. The relative contributions of proprioceptive, vestibular, and visual sensory cues to balance control change depending on their availability and reliability. This sensory reweighting is classically supported by nonlinear sway responses to increasing visual surround and/or surface tilt amplitudes. However, recent evidence indicates that visual cues are reweighted based on visual tilt velocity rather than tilt amplitude. Therefore, we designed a study to specifically test the hypothesized velocity dependence of reweighting while expanding on earlier findings for visual reweighting by testing proprioceptive reweighting for standing balance on a tilting surface. Twenty healthy young adults stood with their eyes closed on a toes-up/-down tilting platform. We designed four pseudorandom tilt sequences with either a slow (S) or a fast (F) tilt velocity and different peak-to-peak amplitudes. We used model-based interpretations of measured sway characteristics to estimate the proprioceptive sensory weight (Wprop) within each trial. In addition, root-mean-square values of measured body center of mass sway amplitude (RMS) and velocity (RMSv) were calculated for each tilt sequence. Wprop, RMS, and RMSv values varied depending on the stimulus velocity, exhibiting large effects (all Cohen's d >1.10). In contrast, we observed no significant differences across stimulus amplitudes for Wprop (Cohen's d: 0.02–0.16) and, compared with the differences in velocity, there were much smaller changes in RMS and RMSv values (Cohen's d: 0.05–0.91). These results confirmed the hypothesized velocity, rather than amplitude, dependence of sensory reweighting. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: This novel study examined the velocity dependence of sensory reweighting for human balance control using support surface tilt stimuli with independently varied amplitude and velocity. Estimates of the proprioceptive contribution to standing balance, derived from model-based interpretations of sway characteristics, showed greater sensitivity to changes in surface tilt velocity than surface tilt amplitude. Injuries involving ankle stability and range of motion are among the most frequent in athletes and in the general population. In response, this study aimed to assess the immediate effects of toe separators on dynamic stability and ankle range of motion in healthy young individuals. Among the 68 eligible participants, 50 healthy and active subjects completed all trials. The impact of the intervention was evaluated using the Weight Bearing Lunge Test and Y-Test. The control condition performed the tests without toe separators, while the experimental condition performed the tests with toe separators. All participants performed both conditions with a wash-out period of at least 7 days between trials. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in dynamic balance (p > 0.05) and range of motion (p > 0.05) between the two conditions. Additionally, no asymmetries were detected between the lower limbs in both tests (p > 0.05). The results of this pilot study indicate that using toe separators does not have an immediate effect on ankle range of motion and dynamic balance in young, healthy individuals. Background: The aim of the study was to assess the inter-rater and intra-rater agreement of measurements performed with the Luna EMG (electromyography) multifunctional robot, a tool for evaluation of upper limb proprioception in individuals with stroke. Methods: The study was conducted in a group of patients with chronic stroke. A total of 126 patients participated in the study, including 78 women and 48 men, on average aged nearly 60 years (mean = 59.9). Proprioception measurements were performed using the Luna EMG diagnostic and rehabilitation robot to assess the left and right upper limbs. The examinations were conducted by two raters, twice, two weeks apart. The results were compared between the raters and the examinations. Results: High consistency of the measurements performed for the right and the left hand was reflected by the interclass correlation coefficients (0.996–0.998 and 0.994–0.999, respectively) and by Pearson's linear correlation which was very high (r = 1.00) in all the cases for the right and the left hand in both the inter-rater and intra-rater agreement analyses. Conclusions: Measurements performed by the Luna EMG diagnostic and rehabilitation robot demonstrate high inter-rater and intra-rater agreement in the assessment of upper limb proprioception in patients with chronic stroke.
