1. Probing VHE gamma-ray emission from GW events with H.E.S.S

Abstract: Gravitational wave (GW) events, particularly those connected to the merger of compact objects such as neutron stars, are believed to be the primary source of short gamma-ray bursts. To explore the very high energy (VHE) component of the emission from these events, the H.E.S.S. collaboration has dedicated a substantial effort and observing time to follow up on these events. During the second and third GW observing runs, H.E.S.S. was the first ground-based instrument to observe the GW170817 binary neutron star merger. In addition, H.E.S.S. followed four binary black hole mergers. The data acquired by H.E.S.S. was used to constrain the VHE emission from these events for the first time. H.E.S.S. also monitored the GW170817 source for approximately 50 hours and obtained limits that constrained the magnetic field in the merger remnant to $> 24 \mu G$. As the fourth GW observing run (O4) approaches, the H.E.S.S. collaboration has allocated significant observation time to the follow-up of GW events. Abstract: Since 2015, the direct detection of Gravitational Waves (GWs) became possible with ground-based interferometers like LIGO and Virgo. GWs became the center of attention of the astronomical community and electromagnetic observatories took a particular interest in follow-up observations of such events. The main setback of these observations is the poor localization of GW events. In fact, GW localization uncertainties can span tens to hundreds of deg$^{2}$ the sky even with the advanced configurations of current GW interferometers. In this contribution, we present five follow-up strategies developed for the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) and assess their performances. We show how a 2D and 3D galaxy targeted search approach exploiting the integral probability inside the instruments field of view are best suited for medium field of view instruments like H.E.S.S. We also develop an automatic response scheme within the H.E.S.S. Transient Follow-up system that is optimized for fast response and is capable of responding promptly to all kind of GW alerts. GW events are filtered by the developed scheme and prompt and afterglow observations are automatically scheduled. The H.E.S.S. response latency to prompt alerts is measured to be less than 1 minute. Abstract: The Ultraviolet Transient Astronomical Satellite is a scientific space mission carrying an astronomical telescope. The mission is led by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the Israel Space Agency, while the camera in the focal plane is designed and built by Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron in Germany. Two key science goals of the mission are the detection of counterparts to gravitational wave sources and supernovae. The launch to geostationary orbit is planned for 2024. The telescope with a field-of-view of $\approx200$deg$^2$, is optimized to work in the near-ultraviolet band between $220$ and $280$nm. The focal plane array is composed of four $22.4$-megapixel, backside-illuminated CMOS sensors with a total active area of 90x90mm$^2$. Prior to sensor production, smaller test sensors have been tested to support critical design decisions for the final flight sensor. These test sensors share the design of epitaxial layer and anti-reflective coatings (ARC) with the flight sensors. Here, we present a characterization of these test sensors. Dark current and read noise are characterized as a function of the device temperature. A temperature-independent noise level is attributed to on-die infrared emission and the read-out electronics` self-heating. We utilize a high-precision photometric calibration setup to obtain the test sensors` quantum efficiency (QE) relative to PTB/NIST-calibrated transfer standards ($220$-$1100$nm), the quantum yield for $\lambda < 300$nm, the non-linearity of the system, and the conversion gain. The uncertainties are discussed in the context of the newest results on the setup`s performance parameters. From three ARC options, Tstd, T1 and T2, the latter optimizes out-of-band rejection and peaks in the mid of the ULTRASAT operational waveband (max. QE $\approx80\%$ at $245\mathrm{nm}$). We recommend ARC option T2 for the final ULTRASAT UV sensor.

4. H.E.S.S. follow-up of BBH merger events

Abstract: We present here, follow-up observations of four Binary black hole BBH events performed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray domain during the second and third LIGO/Virgo observation runs. Detailed analyses of the obtained data did not show significant VHE emission. We derive integral upper limit maps considering a generic $E^{-2}$ source spectrum in the most sensitive H.E.S.S energy interval ranging from 1 to 10 TeV. We also consider Extragalactic Background Light absorption effects and derive integral upper limits over the full accessible energy range. We finally derive upper limits of the VHE luminosity for each event and compare them with the expected VHE emission from GRBs. These comparisons allow us to assess the H.E.S.S. gravitational wave follow-up strategies. Abstract: The Ultraviolet Transient Astronomical Satellite (ULTRASAT) is a scientific UV space telescope that will operate in geostationary orbit. The mission, targeted to launch in 2024, is led by the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Israel and the Israel Space Agency (ISA). Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Germany is tasked with the development of the UV-sensitive camera at the heart of the telescope. The camera's total sensitive area of ~90mm x 90mm is built up by four back-side illuminated CMOS sensors, which image a field of view of ~200 deg2. Each sensor has 22.4 megapixels. The Schmidt design of the telescope locates the detector inside the optical path, limiting the overall size of the assembly. As a result, the readout electronics is located in a remote unit outside the telescope. The short focal length of the telescope requires an accurate positioning of the sensors within +-50 mu along the optical axis, with a flatness of +-10 mu. While the telescope will be at around 295K during operations, the sensors are required to be cooled to 200K for dark current reduction. At the same time, the ability to heat the sensors to 343K is required for decontamination. Abstract: Astronomy plays a major role in the scientific landscape of Namibia. Because of its excellent sky conditions, Namibia is home to ground-based observatories like the High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.), in operation since 2002. Located near the Gamsberg mountain, H.E.S.S. performs groundbreaking science by detecting very-high-energy gamma rays from astronomical objects. The fascinating stories behind many of them are featured regularly in the ``Source of the Month'', a blog-like format intended for the general public with more than 170 features to date. In addition to other online communication via social media, H.E.S.S. outreach activities have been covered locally, e.g. through `open days' and guided tours on the H.E.S.S. site itself. An overview of the H.E.S.S. outreach activities are presented in this contribution, along with discussions relating to the current landscape of astronomy outreach and education in Namibia. There has also been significant activity in the country in recent months, whereby astronomy is being used to further sustainable development via human capacity-building. Finally, as we take into account the future prospects of radio astronomy in the country, momentum for a wider range of astrophysics research is clearly building -- this presents a great opportunity for the astronomy community to come together to capitalise on this movement and support astronomy outreach, with the overarching aim to advance sustainable development in Namibia., Comment: ICRC 2021 conference proceedings, 9 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

Abstract: Gravitational Wave (GW) events are physical processes that significantly perturbate space-time, e.g. compact binary coalescenses, causing the production of GWs. The detection of GWs by a worldwide network of advanced interferometers offer unique opportunities for multi-messenger searches and electromagnetic counterpart associations. While carrying extremely useful information, searches for associated electromagnetic emission are challenging due to large sky localisation uncertainties provided by the current GW observatories LIGO and Virgo. Here we present the methods and procedures used within the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in searches for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission associated to the emission of GWs from extreme events. To do so we create several algorithms dedicated to schedule GW follow-up observations by creating optimized pointing paterns. We describe algorithms using 2-dimensional GW localisation information and algorithms correlating the galaxy distribution in the local universe, by using galaxy catalogs, with the 3-dimensional GW localisation information and evaluate their performances. The H.E.S.S. automatic GW follow-up chain, described in this paper, is optimized to initiate GW follow-up observations within less than 1 minute after the alert reception. These developements allowed H.E.S.S. observations of 6 GW events out of the 67 non-retracted GW events detected during the first three observation runs of LIGO and Virgo reaching VHE $\gamma$-ray coverages of up to 70% of the GW localisation., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

8. Observations of the FSRQ 3C 279 during the flaring state of 2017 and 2018 with H.E.S.S

Abstract: The Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar 3C 279 has been very active since a few years with multiple flaring events occurring at high energies. As part of the H.E.S.S. Target of Opportunity program, 3C 279 was observed multiple times in 2017 and 2018 following high states in optical (February and March 2017) or at high energies as seen with Fermi-LAT (June 2017, January, February and June 2018). While in January 2018 H.E.S.S. detected an unexpected very high energy (VHE) flare at the end of the MeV-GeV flaring state, in June 2018 it was possible to follow almost continuously the decaying part of a strong Fermi-LAT flare, observing with the full array for several nights after the peak of the GeV gamma-ray emission. This has lead to the detection of the source with very high significance. We present here the temporal and spectral results of the H.E.S.S. 9. Muon tagging on the Backend-Electronics of CHEC-S -- a compact high-energy camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the leading ground-base observatory for Very High Energy (VHE) {\gamma}-ray astronomy for the next decades. Its southern site will host about 70 Small Sized Telescopes (SSTs) which will determine the CTA sensitivity at {\gamma}-ray energies between 1 and 300 TeV. One of the design options for the SST cameras is the silicon photomultiplier-based Compact High-Energy Camera (CHEC-S). The back-end electronics (BEE) of CHEC-S interconnects the camera front-end modules, provides power and clock distribution, aggregation, routing and time stamping of data and most importantly it implements the camera trigger system. A novel technique to tag muons using the capabilities of this system has been developed, studying and comparing different algorithms such as circle fitting, machine learning and simple pixel counting. This contribution describes the design of the CHEC-S BEE, and presents the results of the performance of this muon tagger and the prospects of using it for other Cherenkov Telescopes types of CTA.

Abstract: The flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1510-089 is a monitored target in many wavelength bands due to its high variability. It was detected as a very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray emitter with H.E.S.S. in 2009, and has since been a regular target of VHE observations by the imaging Cherenkov observatories H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. In this paper, we summarize the current state of results focusing on the monitoring effort with H.E.S.S. and the discovery of a particularly strong VHE flare in 2016 with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. While the source has now been established as a weak, but regular emitter at VHE, no correlation with other energy bands has been established. 11. H.E.S.S. discovery of very-high-energy emission from the blazar PKS 0736+017: on the location of the $\gamma$-ray emitting region in FSRQs

Abstract: With the installation of a new 28-m diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope in the middle of the array, the H.E.S.S. instrument has entered since 2012 into its Phase II. The fifth large-size telescope is particularly important to lower the threshold energy of the array, and is thus a unique instrument to observe low-frequency-peaked blazars, such as flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs), which remain rare in the very-high- energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray domain. In this contribution, we report on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. telescopes of VHE $\gamma$-ray emission from the FSRQ PKS 0736+017 (z=0.189). H.E.S.S. observations were triggered as a target-of-opportunity in February 2015 following the detection of $\gamma$-ray flaring activity in the MeV-GeV energy-band with Fermi-LAT. Significant VHE emission is detected with H.E.S.S. only during one of the nights of the observing campaign, showing at least night-by-night variability in the VHE regime. 12. Monitoring of the FSRQ PKS 1510-089 with H.E.S.S

Abstract: The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1510-089 (z=0.361) is known for its complex multiwavelength behavior. It has been monitored regularly at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) gamma-rays with H.E.S.S. since its discovery in 2009 in order to study the unknown behavior of FSRQs in quiescence at VHE, as well as the flux evolution around flaring events. Given the expected strong cooling of electrons and the absorption of VHE emission within the broad-line region, a detection of PKS 1510-089 at VHE in a quiescent state would be an important result, implying an acceleration and emission region on scales beyond the broad-line region. The H.E.S.S. monitoring has been intensified since 2015 and is complemented by monitoring at high energy ($E>100\,$MeV) gamma-rays with Fermi, at X-rays with Swift-XRT, and at optical frequencies with ATOM. The dense lightcurves allow for the first time detailed comparison studies between these energy bands. The source has been active in several frequency bands for a large fraction of the observation time frames. Yet, we do not find obvious correlations between the VHE and the other bands over the observed time frame indicating a non-trivial interplay of the acceleration, cooling and radiative processes. Abstract: The blazar PKS 1510-089 was the first of the flat spectrum radio quasar type, which had been detected simultaneously by a ground based Cherenkov telescope (H.E.S.S.) and the LAT instrument on board the Fermi satellite. Given the strong broad line region emission defining this blazar class, and the resulting high optical depth for VHE ($E>100\,$GeV) $\gamma$-rays, it was surprising to detect VHE emission from such an object. In May 2015, PKS 1510-089 exhibited high states throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Target of Opportunity observations with the H.E.S.S. experiment revealed strong and unprecedented variability of this source. 14. Time-resolved multiwavelength observations of the blazar VER J0521+211 from radio to gamma-ray energies

Abstract: VER J0521+211 (RGB J0521.8+2112) is one of the brightest and most powerful blazars detected in the TeV gamma-ray regime. It is located at a redshift of z=0.108 and since its discovery in 2009, VER J0521+211 has exhibited an average TeV flux exceeding 0.1 times that of the Crab Nebula, corresponding to an isotropic luminosity of $3\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We present data from a comprehensive multiwavelength campaign on this object extending between November 2012 and February 2014, including single-dish radio observations, optical photometry and polarimetry, UV, X-ray, GeV and TeV gamma-ray data (VERITAS, MAGIC). Significant flux variability was observed at all wavelengths, including a long-lasting high state at gamma-ray energies in Fall 2013. 15. Observations of very high energy emission from B2 1215+30 with VERITAS

Abstract: We present results of 45 hours of data taken from January to June 2011 with VERITAS above 200 GeV in the direction of B2 1215+30. The blazar was clearly detected with a constant flux of F(E>200 GeV) = (8.0 +- 0.9) \times 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The energy spectrum can be fitted using a power-law with index -3.6 +- 0.5. Abstract: The identification of PeVatrons, hadronic particle accelerators reaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum (few $10^{15}$ eV), is crucial to understand the origin of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. We provide an update on the unidentified source HESS J1702-420, a promising PeVatron candidate. We present new observations of HESS J1702-420 made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), and processed using improved analysis techniques. The analysis configuration was optimized to enhance the collection area at the highest energies. We applied a three-dimensional (3D) likelihood analysis to model the source region and adjust non thermal radiative spectral models to the $\gamma$-ray data. We also analyzed archival data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to constrain the source spectrum at $\gamma$-ray energies >10 GeV. We report the detection of a new source component called HESS J1702-420A, that was separated from the bulk of TeV emission at a $5.4\sigma$ confidence level. The power law $\gamma$-ray spectrum of HESS J1702-420A extends with an index of $\Gamma=1.53\pm0.19_\text{stat}\pm0.20_\text{sys}$ and without curvature up to the energy band 64-113 TeV, in which it was detected by H.E.S.S. at a $4.0\sigma$ confidence level. This brings evidence for the source emission up to $100\,\text{TeV}$, which makes HESS J1702-420A a compelling candidate site for the presence of extremely high energy cosmic rays. Remarkably, in a hadronic scenario, the cut-off energy of the proton distribution powering HESS J1702-420A is found to be higher than 0.5 PeV at a 95% confidence level. HESS J1702-420A becomes therefore one of the most solid PeVatron candidates detected so far in H.E.S.S. data, altough a leptonic origin of its emission could not be ruled out either., Comment: Accepted for publication in the 2. Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract: Physical review / D 103(10), 102002 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.103.102002, We search for an indirect signal of dark matter through very high-energy γ rays from the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM) dwarf irregular galaxy. The pair annihilation of dark matter particles would produce Standard Model particles in the final state such as γ rays, which might be detected by ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. Dwarf irregular galaxies represent promising targets as they are dark matter dominated objects with well-measured kinematics and small uncertainties on their dark matter distribution profiles. In 2018, the five-telescopes of the high energy stereoscopic system observed the dwarf irregular galaxy WLM for 18 hours. We present the first analysis based on data obtained from an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope for this subclass of dwarf galaxy. As we do not observe any significant excess in the direction of WLM, we interpret the result in terms of constraints on the velocity-weighted cross section for dark matter pair annihilation ⟨σv⟩ as a function of the dark matter particle mass for various continuum channels, as well as the prompt γγ emission. For the τ+τ- channel, the limits reach a ⟨σv⟩ value of about 4×10-22 cm3 s-1 for a dark matter particle mass of 1 TeV. For the prompt γγ channel, the upper limit reaches a ⟨σv⟩ value of about 5×10-24 cm3 s-1 for a mass of 370 GeV. Abstract: We report on the observations of four well-localized binary black hole (BBH) mergers by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) during the second and third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, O2 and O3. H.E.S.S. can observe 20 deg2 of the sky at a time and follows up gravitational-wave (GW) events by “tiling” localization regions to maximize the covered localization probability. During O2 and O3, H.E.S.S. observed large portions of the localization regions, between 35% and 75%, for four BBH mergers (GW170814, GW190512_180714, GW190728_064510, and S200224ca). For these four GW events, we find no significant signal from a pointlike source in any of the observations, and we set upper limits on the very high energy (>100 GeV) γ-ray emission. The 1–10 TeV isotropic luminosity of these GW events is below 1045 erg s−1 at the times of the H.E.S.S. observations, around the level of the low-luminosity GRB 190829A. Assuming no changes are made to how follow-up observations are conducted, H.E.S.S. can expect to observe over 60 GW events per year in the fourth GW observing run, O4, of which eight would be observable with minimal latency.

For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Abstract: International audience; Fermi-LAT observations have proven that GeV γ-ray emission is a relatively common feature for many Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB). However the low effective area of space detectors implies low statistics for high energy photons which prevent any physical interpretation at such energy range. The current generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) array of > 104 m2 effective area above a few tens of GeV is able to detect higher energy photons.The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is one of the current generation of IACTs. The large light collection area of the largest telescope and its fast slewing make it perfectly suitable to observe γ rays below 100 GeV with an unprecedented sensitivity. Several tens of GRBs have been observed since 2007. This contribution is about the results of this large sample of observation above a few tens of GeV.

34. The H.E.S.S. experiment : current status and future prospects

Duringthis period H.E.S.S. has discovered a rich zoo of both galactic and extra galactic source classes,made measurements of the galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission and galactic cosmic-ray energyspectrum and placed limits on fundamental physical processes. H.E.S.S. took an important part inthe current emergence of multi-messenger, multi-wavength astronomy that is currently revolutionizingour view on the high-energy universe. In this context, a formal decision on the prolongationof H.E.S.S. for a minimum of three years was made in January 2019, together with an upgrade ofthe camera of the large telescope.In this contribution, a summary of the latest H.E.S.S. results will be presented, describing themost interesting new observations and their physical interpretation. I will detail the latest andupcoming upgrades and improvements to the H.E.S.S. hardware and data analyses and the futurescience prospects for the experiment.

As part of the H.E.S.S. Target of Opportunity program,3C 279 was observed multiple times in 2017 and 2018 following high states in optical (Februaryand March 2017) or at high energies as seen with Fermi-LAT (June 2017, January, February andJune 2018). While in January 2018 H.E.S.S. detected an unexpected very high energy (VHE)flare at the end of the MeV-GeV flaring state, in June 2018 it was possible to follow almostcontinuously the decaying part of a strong Fermi-LAT flare, observing with the full array forseveral nights after the peak of the GeV gamma-ray emission. This has lead to the detection ofthe source with very high significance. We present here the temporal and spectral results of theH.E.S.S. II dataset together with an overview of the strong multi-wavelength activity seen from3C 279 between 2017 and 2018.

In this thesis, the performance of the current- and next-generation imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes VERITAS and CTA is evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations. Special emphasis is given to the possible extension of the duty cycle of CTA. It is shown that an increase of about 30% in observation time can be achieved through operation under partial moonlight without significant losses in performance. The increased observation time is especially important when studying astronomical objects which are variable at very high energies (VHE; E>50 GeV), such as active galactic nuclei (AGN), as this allows the extension of monitoring or multi-wavelength campaigns on these occasionally flaring sources. AGN represent to date about one third of the population of known VHE gamma-ray sources. Most of them are blazars, whose emission is dominated by non-thermal radiation of relativistic jets closely aligned to the line of sight of the observer. The blazar B2 1215+30 has been observed by VERITAS for nearly 100 hours between 2008 and 2012. The data analysis presented in this thesis yields a detection significance of 9.0 sigma and shows long-term variability with a relatively bright flux state in 2011. Multi-wavelength data are used to construct the spectral energy distribution of B2 1215+30 which is well described by a one-zone leptonic model. The model is presented in detail and possible constraints are investigated. Abstract: (2020)., The unidentified very-high-energy (VHE; E $>$ 0.1 TeV) $\gamma$-ray source, HESS J1826$-$130, was discovered with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in the Galactic plane. The analysis of 215 h of HESS data has revealed a steady $\gamma$-ray flux from HESS J1826$-$130, which appears extended with a half-width of 0.21$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 0.02$^{\circ}_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.05$^{\circ}_{\text{sys}}$. The source spectrum is best fit with either a power-law function with a spectral index $\Gamma$ = 1.78 $\pm$ 0.10$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$ and an exponential cut-off at 15.2$^{+5.5}_{-3.2}$ TeV, or a broken power-law with $\Gamma_{1}$ = 1.96 $\pm$ 0.06$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$, $\Gamma_{2}$ = 3.59 $\pm$ 0.69$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$ for energies below and above $E_{\rm{br}}$ = 11.2 $\pm$ 2.7 TeV, respectively. The VHE flux from HESS J1826$-$130 is contaminated by the extended emission of the bright, nearby pulsar wind nebula (PWN), HESS J1825$-$137, particularly at the low end of the energy spectrum. Leptonic scenarios for the origin of HESS J1826$-$130 VHE emission related to PSR J1826$-$1256 are confronted by our spectral and morphological analysis. In a hadronic framework, taking into account the properties of dense gas regions surrounding HESS J1826$-$130, the source spectrum would imply an astrophysical object capable of accelerating the parent particle population up to $\gtrsim$200 TeV. Our results are also discussed in a multiwavelength context, accounting for both the presence of nearby supernova remnants (SNRs), molecular clouds, and counterparts detected in radio, X-rays, and TeV energies.

Abstract: Astronomy and astrophysics 653, A152 (2021). doi:10.1051/0004-6361/202140962, The identification of PeVatrons, hadronic particle accelerators reaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum (few $10^{15}$ eV), is crucial to understand the origin of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. We provide an update on the unidentified source HESS J1702-420, a promising PeVatron candidate. We present new observations of HESS J1702-420 made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), and processed using improved analysis techniques. The analysis configuration was optimized to enhance the collection area at the highest energies. We applied a three-dimensional (3D) likelihood analysis to model the source region and adjust non thermal radiative spectral models to the $\gamma$-ray data. We also analyzed archival data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to constrain the source spectrum at $\gamma$-ray energies >10 GeV. We report the detection of a new source component called HESS J1702-420A, that was separated from the bulk of TeV emission at a $5.4\sigma$ confidence level. The power law $\gamma$-ray spectrum of HESS J1702-420A extends with an index of $\Gamma=1.53\pm0.19_\text{stat}\pm0.20_\text{sys}$ and without curvature up to the energy band 64-113 TeV, in which it was detected by H.E.S.S. at a $4.0\sigma$ confidence level. This brings evidence for the source emission up to $100\,\text{TeV}$, which makes HESS J1702-420A a compelling candidate site for the presence of extremely high energy cosmic rays. Remarkably, in a hadronic scenario, the cut-off energy of the proton distribution powering HESS J1702-420A is found to be higher than 0.5 PeV at a 95% confidence level. HESS J1702-420A becomes therefore one of the most solid PeVatron candidates detected so far in H.E.S.S. data, altough a leptonic origin of its emission could not be ruled out either., Published by EDP Sciences, Les Ulis

Abstract: The astrophysical journal 923(1), 109 (2021). doi:10.3847/1538-4357/ac2e04, We report on the observations of four well-localized binary black hole (BBH) mergers by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) during the second and third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, O2 and O3. H.E.S.S. can observe 20 deg$^{2}$ of the sky at a time and follows up gravitational-wave (GW) events by ��tiling�� localization regions to maximize the covered localization probability. During O2 and O3, H.E.S.S. observed large portions of the localization regions, between 35% and 75%, for four BBH mergers (GW170814, GW190512_180714, GW190728_064510, and S200224ca). For these four GW events, we find no significant signal from a pointlike source in any of the observations, and we set upper limits on the very high energy (>100 GeV) ��-ray emission. The 1��10 TeV isotropic luminosity of these GW events is below 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{��1}$ at the times of the H.E.S.S. observations, around the level of the low-luminosity GRB 190829A. Assuming no changes are made to how follow-up observations are conducted, H.E.S.S. can expect to observe over 60 GW events per year in the fourth GW observing run, O4, of which eight would be observable with minimal latency., Published by Univ., Chicago, Ill. Abstract: Astronomy and astrophysics 644, A112 (2020). doi:10.1051/0004-6361/202038851, The unidentified very-high-energy (VHE; E $>$ 0.1 TeV) $\gamma$-ray source, HESS J1826$-$130, was discovered with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in the Galactic plane. The analysis of 215 h of HESS data has revealed a steady $\gamma$-ray flux from HESS J1826$-$130, which appears extended with a half-width of 0.21$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 0.02$^{\circ}_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.05$^{\circ}_{\text{sys}}$. The source spectrum is best fit with either a power-law function with a spectral index $\Gamma$ = 1.78 $\pm$ 0.10$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$ and an exponential cut-off at 15.2$^{+5.5}_{-3.2}$ TeV, or a broken power-law with $\Gamma_{1}$ = 1.96 $\pm$ 0.06$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$, $\Gamma_{2}$ = 3.59 $\pm$ 0.69$_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.20$_{\text{sys}}$ for energies below and above $E_{\rm{br}}$ = 11.2 $\pm$ 2.7 TeV, respectively. The VHE flux from HESS J1826$-$130 is contaminated by the extended emission of the bright, nearby pulsar wind nebula (PWN), HESS J1825$-$137, particularly at the low end of the energy spectrum. Leptonic scenarios for the origin of HESS J1826$-$130 VHE emission related to PSR J1826$-$1256 are confronted by our spectral and morphological analysis. In a hadronic framework, taking into account the properties of dense gas regions surrounding HESS J1826$-$130, the source spectrum would imply an astrophysical object capable of accelerating the parent particle population up to $\gtrsim$200 TeV. Abstract: Gravitational Wave (GW) events are physical processes that significantly perturbate space-time, e.g. compact binary coalescenses, causing the production of GWs. The detection of GWs by a worldwide network of advanced interferometers offer unique opportunities for multi-messenger searches and electromagnetic counterpart associations. While carrying extremely useful information, searches for associated electromagnetic emission are challenging due to large sky localisation uncertainties provided by the current GW observatories LIGO and Virgo. Here we present the methods and procedures used within the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in searches for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission associated to the emission of GWs from extreme events. To do so we create several algorithms dedicated to schedule GW follow-up observations by creating optimized pointing paterns. We describe algorithms using 2-dimensional GW localisation information and algorithms correlating the galaxy distribution in the local universe, by using galaxy catalogs, with the 3-dimensional GW localisation information and evaluate their performances. The H.E.S.S. automatic GW follow-up chain, described in this paper, is optimized to initiate GW follow-up observations within less than 1 minute after the alert reception. These developements allowed H.E.S.S. observations of 6 GW events out of the 67 non-retracted GW events detected during the first three observation runs of LIGO and Virgo reaching VHE $\gamma$-ray coverages of up to 70% of the GW localisation.
