Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and comorbid factors (sleep bruxism and headaches). This study was a cross-sectional population survey in the city of Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil.Materials and Methods: Axes I and II of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) were used for assessment of TMD signs and symptoms. The population was users of the Brazilian public health system (SUS), of both sexes, between the ages of 20 and 65 years, and not seeking treatment for TMD.Results: The selected population (N = 1,643) was composed mostly of (a) women (65.9%), (b) married or single individuals (90.6%), (c) Caucasians (70.1%), (d) individuals aged 32.7 ± 10.3 years, (e) individuals earning a medium income (75.1%), and (f) those who had completed a high school education or higher (79.9%). According to the chronic pain grade classification (CPG) in the RDC/TMD Axis II, 36.2% of the population had some degree of TMD pain (CPG I to IV); however, only 5.1% had severe limitation due to pain (CPG III or IV). In the RDC/TMD Axis I diagnoses, 29.5% presented with muscle disorders (group I), 7.9% with disk displacements (group II), and 39.1% with other joint disorders (group III). Headaches were present in 67.9% and awake and sleep bruxism in 30% and 33.4% of the population, respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD was high in this population, but with low disability; however, the proportion of patients in need of treatment was much lower. - Abstract
The use of waterpipe, a form of tobacco consumption, is increasing worldwide and especially in Brazil. Its consumption is higher among students, who consider it less harmful than regular cigarettes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a literature review demonstrating the impact of waterpipe on individual's health. Waterpipe, originated from the Middle East and South Asia, has had its use widespread in Western countries as a form of socialization. Its highest use occurs among teenagers, who see in it a form of social acceptance, especially during the college period. Although most people think that their harms are small, the amount and concentration of toxic substances in it are larger than in the common cigarette, which makes it more harmful to the individual's health. Its consumption can cause, among others diseases, cancer, heart and respiratory problems, dental and periodontal alterations, besides the great addictive potential it presents. Hence, waterpipe is more harmful to the individual's health than the use of regular cigarette. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Excessive gingival display during smile can result in compromised esthetics. This study aims to report a case of excessive gingival display with multiple etiologies treated by means of modified lip repositioning technique associated with esthetic crown lengthening. A 23-year-old female patient, with 5-mm gingival display during smile caused by altered passive eruption and hypermobility of the upper lip, underwent the modified lip repositioning technique associated with gingivectomy followed by flap elevation and ostectomy/osteoplasty. Seven months after the second procedure, the patient had her esthetic complaint solved appearing stable in the observation period. The modified lip repositioning technique is an effective procedure employed to reduce gingival display and when associated with esthetic clinical crown lengthening, can appropriately treat cases of gummy smile. The changes that occurred daily in children contributed to the increase in cases of childhood bruxism. The objective is to report two cases of bruxism in children 11 years old and discuss the forms of treatment. Inclusion criteria were headache, myofascial pain and grinding of teeth nightly for more than 6 months. We used the questionnaire to the temporomandibular disorders diagnostic criteria (axis I and II of the RDC / TMD), the Sleep Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), which were applied before and after 60 days of use of the occlusal splints from silicone and Pain Calendar. The proposed treatment was the use of silicone in the jaw plates with complete coverage of the occlusal surfaces. After two months there has been verified that the absence of nocturnal grinding report indicating a decrease in the intensity of nocturnal bruxism and improvement in reporting pain in muscles of the face and headaches. Treatment with the silicone in occlusal splints, used by children, were efficient to the bruxism control. There is need for a correct diagnosis and treatment plan as well as a multidisciplinary monitoring due to multifactorial etiology of bruxism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The disturbances temporomandibular (DTMs) they are clinical alterations that attack the system neuromuscular, located in the area of the articulation temporomandibular, bringing pain orofacial. The factors behavioral and the life quality can be involved so much in the aetiology, as in the progression of the disease. Objective: The proposition of the present study is to observe as the quality of life of the dysfunction bearers can influence in the cure of the disease and as the variation of the behavior it modifies this answer. Methodology: the study was composed by 1643 people with age between 20 and 65 years, users of the System of Health Public in the city of Maringa-PR, the interviews were made with application of RDC/TMD Axis I and II. Result: suggests as a result of this study that patient with more than a diagnosis, including muscular alterations, they can suffer with symptom of intensity of larger pain, affecting this way, your symptoms depression, somatization and your capacity to wrap up in daily activities. This seems to be related with the fact that the presence of muscular alteration is an important factor predisposing in the development of sharp DTM for DTM chronicle. The results of this study indicate that the participants that are in a high risk of developing DTM chronicle suffer more of solemnity-referred pain, interference with the daily activities, depression and somatization, affecting the life quality. Conclusion: In agreement with the study, it can be concluded that the quality of the individual's life can influence so much in your behavior front to the disturbance as in your social relationships, because psychological indicators of anxiety, life quality and general health are directly associated to the dysfunction. A maioria (56,4%) nasceram no campo.

The objective of this study was evaluate the use of naphazoline hydrochloride in comparison with aluminum chloride in the vertical gingival retraction (VGR). The study included 24 patients in whom gingival retraction cords (Ultrapak nº 000 and 1) were placed on the teeth 13, 21 and 23. Each teeth was randomly treated according to the following groups (N = 24): Group 1 received retraction cords impregnated with aluminum chloride; Group 2 with naphazoline hydrochloride; and Group 3 (control) without any chemical substance. After impression, images of each tooth were taken from the cast to measure VGR. Three measures were obtained from each tooth, and mean VGR was calculated. Using the linear mixed statistical model multilevel, it was observed that cords impregnated with naphazoline hydrochloride produced a vertical gingival retraction (VGR) similar to cords without any agents, and significantly smaller than those impregnated with aluminum chloride (p=0.0070). It was concluded that the imbibition of gingival retraction cords in naphazoline hydrochloride was not capable of providing any improvements in relation to using cords without any chemical agents
