This paper explores how professional engineers recognize and make sense of product defects in their everyday work. Such activities form a crucial, if often overlooked, part of professional engineering practice. By detecting, recognizing and repairing defects, engineers contribute to the creation of value and the optimization of production processes. Focusing on early-career engineers in an advanced steel mill in the United States, we demonstrate how learning specific ways of seeing and attending to defects take shape around the increasing automation of certain aspects of engineering work. Practices of sensing defects are embodied, necessitating disciplined eyes, ears, and hands, but they are also distributed across human and non-human actors. We argue that such an approach to technical work provides texture to the stark opposition between human and machine work that has emerged in debates around automation. Our approach to sensing defects suggests that such an opposition, with its focus on job loss or retention, misses the more nuanced ways in which humans and machines are conjoined in perceptual tasks. The effects of automation should be understood through such shifting configurations and the ways that they variously incorporate the perceptual practices of humans and machines.

Paolo Gava, (Conegliano, Treviso, September 1, 1946 – Stra, Venezia, Italy, July 19, 2021) was a sustainable resources engineer, who worked in Italy, France and England, leading research programs well before the current international interest in countering global warming. Passionate about Tango, Paolo kept himself in shape for many decades by running or pedaling or roller-skating, after years of training as a semi-professional athlete, competing and winning Italian and European short distance races in the Master classes. Then, Paolo applied his engineering skills to optimize comparisons between the results of the different Classes of Master Athletes, questioning the rules used by Italian and World Master Sports Associations. Friendly discussing during an after-dinner, he shocked us claiming that, in absence of diseases and trauma (Early Aging), the aging decay is a linear process from 30 to 110 years. Under our friendly pressure he was able to publish his first biomedical article, detailing his mathematical approaches and results in a 2015 issue of Experimental Aging Research, titled: Age-associated power decline from running, jumping and throwing male master world records. To honor his other legacies during his last six years of life, we add here further examples of Paolo's scientific studies and his relationships with senior colleagues and young students of sports and aging sciences.

This chapter provides a summary of the concrete mixture proportions design for durability in accordance with Building Codes and Industry Standards set forth for structural and mass concrete durability under various exposure conditions. As defined by ACI 318, for each class of concrete, and exposure condition, the minimum water-to-cementitious material ratios (w/cm) and minimum compressive strength are prescribed. The responsibility of selecting the concrete mixture proportions design rests with the professional engineer, licensed in the state where the construction is carried out.

In this article, the authors discuss the legal liabilities of the professional engineer as both the engineer of record of a project and the construction site manager. In particular, this article analyzes the case of a fire at the end-user medium voltage–low-voltage (MV–LV) substation of a shopping center in Italy, which occurred a few years after the maintenance works on the electrical installation. The professional engineer who had designed and overseen the construction of the substation was accused of professional negligence. The authors through the examination of applicable technical standards, as well as of safety regulations, demonstrate that the professional engineer had acted diligently and that there was no ground for the negligence charges. The analysis of the substation fire is provided, and the importance of the chain of custody, the chronological documentation, and the secure storing of all the artifacts and fire-damaged evidence is discussed. The authors believe that this article can be a useful reference for electrical forensics engineers, investigating similar accidents.

Este artículo describe un procedimiento de adaptación de la metodología Métrica 3 a un contexto académico para el desarrollo de trabajos de fin de grado, motivado por una serie de carencias observadas al realizarlos en el Grado en Ingeniería Informática del Software de la Universidad de Oviedo. La metodología de adaptación consistió en la eliminación o simplificación de los procesos de Métrica 3 que se han juzgado menos aplicables al contexto académico y la introducción de elementos y ejemplos que la integran con las asignaturas de la titulación, unificando sus contenidos. Con ello, se ha desarrollado un documento/plantilla que propone una estructura general para un proyecto de desarrollo de software respetando la estructura de Métrica 3. El uso del documento es opcional y flexible: el alumno debe adaptarlo a su trabajo. La plantilla es pública e integra una serie de estilos y formatos predeterminados, así como explicaciones o ejemplos adicionales que facilitan su uso. El uso de esta plantilla a lo largo de más de 10 años ha sido un éxito, facilitando lograr trabajos con una mejor estructuración. También ha decrementado el número de defectos, problemas generales de desarrollo y dificultades planteadas por los alumnos. This article describes a procedure for adapting the Métrica 3 methodology to an academic context for the development of final degree projects, motivated by a series of deficiencies observed while developing them in the Bachelor of Software Engineering of the University of Oviedo. The adaptation methodology consisted on removing or simplifying of those processes of Métrica 3 that have been judged less applicable to the academic context, and the introduction of elements and examples that integrate it with the degree courses, unifying its contents. Considering this, a document/template has been developed that proposes a general structure for a software development project preserving the structure of Métrica 3. The use of the document is optional and flexible: the student must adapt it to their work. The template is public and integrates several default styles and formats, as well as additional explanations or examples that make it easier to use. This template has been successfully used over more than 10 years, facilitating to improve work structure. It also managed to decrease the number of defects, general development problems, and student difficulties.

Three case studies in Canada are evaluated where a regulatory authority ruled that measures considered by some professionals to be without scientific basis and less protective of human health or the environment were the required courses of action. The three projects were in the field of environmental geoscience. In all three cases, the solution proposed by a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) was opposed by a representative of a regulatory body that held authority for approval. The final outcomes that were approved by the regulator were less protective of human health (increased exposure to potential contaminants) and/or the environment (more resources used; higher contaminant exposure). In two of the three cases, the solutions were also more expensive to the client and the taxpayer. This paper explores the practice of professionalism in geoscience versus regulatory authorities that hold jurisdiction over geoscience in a broad sense. In each of the three cases, the professional opinions and analysis of the P.Geo. working for a private sector client were overridden by a professional (P.Geo. or Professional Engineer) in an approval authority. These three studies highlight the ethical decisions required by professional geoscientists in the face of regulators who hold control over areas of geoscience. Although the training of professionals is similar, regulators appear to be influenced by perceived risk as opposed to actual risk based on scientific evidence. Similarly, some policies do not have a solid scientific basis. As a result, sound scientific reasoning and resulting rational decisions may be hindered in regulatory decision-making.RÉSUMÉTrois études de cas canadiens sont évaluées, où une autorité règlementaire a statué comme requises des mesures qui avaient été déclarées par des professionnels comme étant sans fondements scientifiques et moins protectrices pour la santé humaine ou les milieux de vie. Il s’agit de trois projets du domaine des géosciences des milieux de vie. Dans les trois cas, la solution proposée par un géologue professionnel (P.Geo.) a été contestée par un représentant d'un organisme règlementaire décisionnel. Les résultats définitifs approuvés par l'organisme règlementaire protégeait moins la santé humaine (augmentation de l'exposition aux contaminants potentiels) et/ou le milieu de vie (plus de ressources utilisées; augmentation de l'exposition aux contaminants). Dans deux des trois cas, les solutions étaient également plus coûteuses pour le client et le contribuable. Le présent article explore la pratique professionnelle en géosciences par rapport à celle des autorités règlementaires qui ont juridiction dans le domaine des géosciences en général. Dans chacun de ces trois cas, les avis professionnels et l'analyse de P.Geo. travaillant pour un client du secteur privé ont été supplantés par celui d’un professionnel (P.Geo. ou ingénieur professionnel) œuvrant a sein d’une autorité règlementaire. Ces trois études mettent en lumière des décisions éthiques attendues de géoscientifiques professionnels face à des autorités règlementaires décisionnelles en certains domaines géoscientifiques. La formation de ces professionnels est similaire, mais il semble que les régulateurs soient influencés par le risque perçu plutôt que par le risque réel établi scientifiquement. De même, certaines politiques n'ont pas une base scientifique solide. Il s’en suit qu’un raisonnement scientifique solide et des décisions rationnelles qui en résultent peuvent être contrecarrés par une décision règlementaire.

The national qualification called the professional engineer is the best qualification that the technical college student should aim at. On the other hand, when we pay more attention to a career education, it may be difficult to instruct it with an actual feeling about many occupations only by teachers. So, it is said that it is desirable to take place the cooperative education with the professional engineer who has much technical knowledge and experience. National institute of tech-nology, Tsuyama College concluded a cooperation agreement with Okayama Branch of the Institute of Professional En-gineers, Japan and has been wrestling for a career education while getting the support of the professional engineer. In this report, we describe the contents of this education.

In doing your job as a professional engineer, solving real-world engineering problems sometimes requires you to engage in creative, out-of-the-box thinking to invent new solutions or technologies. Yet invention is not always the best path for addressing engineering problems. In other cases, your education and applied experience already equip you with existing solutions, technologies, systems, or methods that match need satisfactorily or upon which you can innovate a new solution rather than create one from scratch.

This paper focuses on how to train BIM professional engineers in civil engineering majors in applied universities of ordinary universities. In view of the current situation in China, it is proposed to develop BIM technology popularization education in applied universities. At the same time, we should make full use of the "Second Classroom" to train BIM professional engineers. Based on this, we have built a "capacity training, capability certification, The ability output "three" is the core BIM professional engineer training mode.

I served as an executive member of Professional Development Committee, IPEJ from 2013 to 2017, and worked on the compilation of the “IPD GUIDE BOOK for EIT (Engineers-in-Training) (3rd edition)” which is a tool for initial professional development. The purpose of the 3rd edition are as follows. 1) Reflecting the study results of Professional Engineer System Study Special Committee, MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Japan. 2) Reflecting the contents of PC (professional competency) profiles of IEA (International Engineering Alliance) to adapt international engineer’s qualification of IPEA (International Professional Engineer Agreement) and APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation). 3) To describe plainly what is PC and how to acquire it. We classified Engineering Professional Competences into 16 items. I will explain the outline of “IPD GUIDEBOOK for EIT (3rd edition)” and public relations.

The paper proposes a learning strategy as a tool for professional development of graduate engineers. The aim of the study is to define elements of a learning strategy for prospective professional engineers and to identify a way for forming this strategy. Feedback questionnaires for certified professional engineers in Russia and two-round Delphi questionnaires for practicing engineers and evaluators involved in certification examinations are among used methods.

This chapter deals with the responsibilities of an engineer and designer. It also shows the guidelines to the routes and registration to become a professional engineer and technician.

Existing and ageing landed residential dwelling properties in Singapore are continuously undergoing reconstruction and improvements. Due to the many faceted architectural designs that are unique to each and every individual owner’s brief, most of such constructions are non-repetitive and use of reinforced in situ concrete with brickworks is commonly adopted. With recent drastic manpower shortage, such traditional construction, which normally takes 6–12 months to complete, is becoming very challenging. The use of sustainable modular steel-precast concrete building construction system paves a path for future construction of small-scale one-off design dwellings. This paper explores the implementation, implications, innovations and achievements of using this modular system in one such project. This is likely the first project in Singapore to test-bed such system for landed residential dwelling addition and alteration. It was conceived by a professional engineer, the project expert with the full support of the owner right from the onset. The paper offers professionals, builders, developers and other stakeholders in sustainable development to meet their goals in such building constructions.

Good operation habits and well daily maintenance will extend the lifespan of furnace in a way. In this chapter, we will discuss some tips of common maintenance and troubleshooting.

In order to properly address the issues of today’s global world, the importance of engineering students acquiring leadership and professional skills has increased tremendously. In fact, leadership is one of the basic pillars for global economic development. By immersing oneself in an engineering organization or honor society, one learns to cultivate a team-work mentality that will be invaluable in the future society. Global engineering organizations, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, have student chapters that offer opportunities to develop those critical leadership skills needed to become an essential asset in the problem solving required to keep the world progressing to its full potential. Throughout this paper, engineering students give the first-person accounts of how becoming a leader within their respective organizations has transformed their undergraduate degree experience. These students have gone on to establish other organizations at Florida Atlantic University that have also enhanced the educational experience of other students and illustrate the importance of emphasizing leadership skills in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics fields.

Efforts to enact structural engineering licensure in more states continue among supporters around the country. Spurred by concerns about the increasingly complex nature of structural engineering and the possible hazards associated with inadequate structural designs, the movement also continues to generate opposition from those who maintain it will diminish the integrity of the professional engineer license. However, supporters assert that the two approaches to licensure are in fact compatible.

The evolution of dynamic response analysis and its role in geotechnical earthquake engineering primarily in North American practice is traced from 1964–2015: from the elementary visco-elastic analyses of site response of the 1960s to the more complex methods of analysis in use today that are based on sophisticated plasticity constitutive models. This review is limited to North American practice because the author is most familiar with this practice, having served it as researcher, professor and professional engineer over the past 50 years. A selection of case histories is presented below that demonstrate the wide-ranging capability of geotechnical engineers today of solving critical and important types of problems in practice since the widespread availability of reliable nonlinear methods of analysis.

This paper discusses the challenges faced by Zimbabwean engineers as they strive for professional recognition in South Africa. A case study of Zimbabwean engineers is used as an example to explore how a South African professional association dealt with an inflow of migrant professionals from within the African continent. Data was collected through semi-structured individual and group interviews. The findings reveal that the process to become a licenced professional engineer was ambiguous, highly subjective, unnecessarily long, and complex. Furthermore, the Engineering Council of South Africa’s re-accreditation process under-valued their working experience and educational qualifications. Despite being employed in very senior positions for at least three years at the time of the interviews, the participants in this study were not registered as professional engineers. Thus, I argue that the Engineering Council of South Africa is mainly concerned with protecting the interests of the powerful elite in the profession.
