The purpose of this paper was to determine the optimal conditions for the electropolishing process of austenitic stainless steel X2CrNiMo17-12-2 (AISI 316L) for application in the pharmaceutical industry. The effects of electropolishing time, electrolyte temperature, distance between electrodes and previous mechanical processing were studied. The success of the process was evaluated by measuring the corrosion resistance of the treated samples by electrochemical methods of Tafel's extrapolation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization in a 3 % NaCl solution and by measuring the surface roughness of the treated samples. The best results were obtained during the 15-minute process at room temperature for the distance between the electrodes of 2 and 4 cm, whereas the previous mechanical processing did not influence the corrosion resistance of the treated sample.
