Abstract

AARC (Authentication and Authorisation for Research Communities) is a two-year EC-funded project to develop and pilot an integrated cross-discipline authentication and authorisation framework, building on existing authentication and authorisation infrastructures (AAIs) and production federated infrastructure. AARC also champions federated access and offers tailored training to complement the actions needed to test AARC results and to promote AARC outcomes. Abstract

An autosomal genomic scan for loci linked to energy metabolism and obesity has been carried out for Pima Indians, a group with a tendency to obesity. Possible candidate genes were found. In 220 siblings with measurement of energy metabolism and in 362 siblings with measurements of body composition, 516 microsatellite markers with median spacing of 6.4 cM were analyzed, making 451 sib pairs in 127 nuclear families analyzed for linkage to obesity and 236 sib pairs in 82 nuclear families for linkage to energy metabolism.

In this study, atopic conditions were not associated with risk of brain tumors in children and adolescents or of glioma in particular. Results are not consistent with findings for adult glioma, possibly explained by a different distribution of histological subtypes. В рамках современных концепций непрерывного образования оно предстает как единство формального, неформального и информального образования. Все они и каждое по отдельности влияют на успешность профессиональной деятельности научно-педагогических кадров. Целью статьи является анализ признаков, функций и влияния информального образования на развитие и профессиональную деятельность научно- педагогического работника (НПР). Информальное образование охарактеризовано в статье как один из видов образования во взаимосвязи с формальным и неформальным образованием, образующими в целостности непрерывное образование НПР. На основании анализа научной литературы и документации выявлены существенные признаки информального образования (атрибутивность относительно жизнедеятельности человека, естественный и необходимый характер, самоорганизованность, непрерывность). Охарактеризована жизненная ситуация как источник информального образования. Описаны функции информального образования относительно других видов образования. Показано влияние информального образования НПР университетов на их развитие и на успешность их профессиональной деятельности. Education in the modern world cannot be reduced to its formal types produced in educational organizations. In the framework of modern concepts of continuing education, it appears as a unity of formal, non-formal and informal education. Each and all of them have impact on the professional activity of the academic staff. The aim of the article is to analyze the characteristics, functions and influence of informal education for the development of professional activity of scientificpedagogical employees (SPE). Informal education is characterized in the article as one of the types of education in relation to formal and informal education, which form the integrity of the continuing education of the SPE. Based on the analysis of scientific literature and empirical data obtained during the survey of the SPE, the essential features of informal education (the natural and necessary character, selforganization, continuity) were identified. Life situations as sources of informal education were characterized. The authors described the features of in-formal education in relation to other types of education. The influence of informal education of SPE on their development and the success of their professional activities was given.

Abstract

The GOLEM tokamak was operated remotely via Internet connection during the 6th International Workshop and Summer School on Plasma Physics. Performances of hydrogen and helium discharges are compared in this paper. It is found, at similar vacuum conditions, that helium discharges are shorter but the breakdown of the working gas can be quite easily achieved at almost the same loop voltage. The plasma current in helium discharges is slightly lower than in the case of hydrogen. Turbulent fluctuations of the floating potential measured by means of an array of Langmuir probes reveal a noticeably different character in the two discharges.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that children and adolescents might be more vulnerable to possible health effects from mobile phone exposure than adults. We investigated whether mobile phone use is associated with brain tumor risk among children and adolescents. METHODS: CEFALO is a multicenter case-control study conducted in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland that includes all children and adolescents aged 7-19 years who were diagnosed with a brain tumor between 2004 and 2008. We conducted interviews, in person, with 352 case patients (participation rate: 83%) and 646 control subjects (participation rate: 71%) and their parents. Control subjects were randomly selected from population registries and matched by age, sex, and geographical region. We asked about mobile phone use and included mobile phone operator records when available. Odds ratios (ORs) for brain tumor risk and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression models. RESULTS: Regular users of mobile phones were not statistically significantly more likely to have been diagnosed with brain tumors compared with nonusers (OR = 1.36; 95% CI = 0.92 to 2.02). Children who started to use mobile phones at least 5 years ago were not at increased risk compared with those who had never regularly used mobile phones (OR = 1.26, 95% CI = 0.70 to 2.28). In a subset of study participants for whom operator recorded data were available, brain tumor risk was related to the time elapsed since the mobile phone subscription was started but not to amount of use. No increased risk of brain tumors was observed for brain areas receiving the highest amount of exposure. CONCLUSION: The absence of an exposure-response relationship either in terms of the amount of mobile phone use or by localization of the brain tumor argues against a causal association.
