Search

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are very energetic pulses of unknown physical origin. These can be used to study the intergalactic medium (IGM) thanks to their dispersion measure (DM). The DM has several contributions that can be measured (or estimated), including the contribution from the host galaxy itself, DM_host. In this work, we empirically estimate DM_host for a sample of 12 galaxy hosts, using a direct method based solely on the properties of the host galaxies themselves (DM_host_dir). We use VLT/MUSE observations of the FRB hosts for estimating DM_host_dir. The method relies on estimating the DM contribution of both the FRB host galaxy's interstellar medium and its halo separately. For comparison purposes, we also provide an alternative indirect method to estimate DM_host based on the Macquart relation (DM_host_mq). We find an average = 80+/-11 pc/cc with a standard deviation of 38 pc/cc (in the rest-frame) based on our direct method, with a systematic uncertainty of 30%. We report positive correlations between DM_host and both the stellar masses and the star-formation rates of their host galaxies. In contrast, we do not find any strong correlation between DM_host and neither redshift nor the projected distances to the FRB hosts centers. Finally, we do not find any strong correlation between DM_host_dir and DM_host_mq, although their average values are consistent. Our reported correlations could be used to improve the priors used in establishing DM_host for individual FRBs. Similarly, such correlations and the lack of a strong redshift evolution can be used to constrain models for the progenitor of FRBs. However, the lack of a DM_host_dir and DM_host_mq correlation indicates that there may still be contributions to the DM of FRBs not included in our modeling, e.g. large DMs from the FRB progenitor and/or intervening large-scale structures not accounted for in DM_host_mq., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics on 20 January, 2025. There has been a rapid increase in the known fast radio burst (FRB) population, yet the progenitor(s) of these events have remained an enigma. A small number of FRBs have displayed some level of quasi-periodicity in their burst profile, which can be used to constrain their plausible progenitors. However, these studies suffer from the lack of polarisation data which can greatly assist in constraining possible FRB progenitors and environments. Here we report on the detection and characterisation of FRB 20230708A by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a burst which displays a rich temporal and polarimetric morphology. We model the burst time series to test for the presence of periodicity, scattering and scintillation. We find a potential period of T = 7.267 ms within the burst, but with a low statistical significance of 1.77$\sigma$. Additionally, we model the burst's time- and frequency-dependent polarisation to search for the presence of (relativistic and non-relativistic) propagation effects. We find no evidence to suggest that the high circular polarisation seen in FRB 20230708A is generated by Faraday conversion. The majority of the properties of FRB 20230708A are broadly consistent with a (non-millisecond) magnetar model in which the quasi-periodic morphology results from microstructure in the beamed emission, but other explanations are not excluded., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

The intracluster medium (ICM) in the far outskirts (r $>$ 2-3 R$_{200}$) of galaxy clusters interfaces with the intergalactic medium (IGM) and is theorized to comprise diffuse, multiphase gas. This medium may hold vital clues to clusters' thermodynamic evolution and far-reaching impacts on infalling, future cluster galaxies. The diffuse outskirts of clusters are well-suited for quasar absorption line observations, capable of detecting gas to extremely low column densities. We analyze 18 QSO spectra observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope whose lines of sight trace the gaseous environments of 26 galaxy clusters from within R$_{200}$ to 6 R$_{200}$ in projection. We measure the dN/dz and covering fraction of H I and O VI associated with the foreground clusters as a function of normalized impact parameter. We find the dN/dz for H I is consistent with the IGM field value for all impact parameter bins, with an intriguing slight elevation between 2 and 3 R$_{200}$. The dN/dz for O VI is also consistent with the field value (within 3$\sigma$) for all impact parameter bins, with potential elevations in dN/dz both within 1-2 R$_{200}$ and beyond 4 R$_{200}$ at $>2\sigma$. We propose physical scenarios that may give rise to these tentative excesses, such as a buildup of neutral gas at the outer accretion shock front and a signature of the warm-hot IGM. We report the discovery of the repeating fast radio burst source FRB 20240209A using the CHIME/FRB telescope. We have detected 22 bursts from this repeater between February and July 2024, six of which were also recorded at the Outrigger station KKO. The 66-km long CHIME-KKO baseline can provide single-pulse FRB localizations along one dimension with $2^{\prime\prime}$ accuracy. The high declination of $\sim$86 degrees for this repeater allowed its detection with a rotating range of baseline vectors, enabling the combined localization region size to be constrained to $1^{\prime\prime}\times2^{\prime\prime}$. We present deep Gemini observations that, combined with the FRB localization, enabled a robust association of FRB 20240209A to the outskirts of a luminous galaxy (P(O|x) = 0.99; $L \approx 5.3 \times 10^{10}\,L_{\odot}$). FRB 20240209A has a projected physical offset of $40 \pm 5$ kpc from the center of its host galaxy, making it the FRB with the largest host galaxy offset to date. When normalized by the host galaxy size, the offset of FRB 20240209A is comparable to that of FRB 20200120E, the only FRB source known to originate in a globular cluster. We consider several explanations for the large offset, including a progenitor that was kicked from the host galaxy or in situ formation in a low-luminosity satellite galaxy of the putative host, but find the most plausible scenario to be a globular cluster origin. This, coupled with the quiescent, elliptical nature of the host as demonstrated in our companion paper, provide strong evidence for a delayed formation channel for the progenitor of the FRB source., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals

The discovery and localization of FRB20240209A by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) experiment marks the first repeating FRB localized with the CHIME/FRB Outriggers and adds to the small sample of repeating FRBs with associated host galaxies. Here we present Keck and Gemini observations of the host that reveal a redshift $z=0.1384\pm0.0004$. We perform stellar population modeling to jointly fit the optical through mid-infrared data of the host and infer a median stellar mass log$(M_*/{\rm M_{\odot}})=11.34\pm0.01$ and a mass-weighted stellar population age $\sim11$Gyr, corresponding to the most massive and oldest FRB host discovered to date. Coupled with a star formation rate $<0.36\,{\rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$, the specific star formation rate $<10^{-11.8}\rm\ yr^{-1}$ classifies the host as quiescent. Through surface brightness profile modeling, we determine an elliptical galaxy morphology, marking the host as the first confirmed elliptical FRB host. The discovery of a quiescent early-type host galaxy within a transient class predominantly characterized by late-type star-forming hosts is reminiscent of short-duration gamma-ray bursts, Type Ia supernovae, and ultraluminous X-ray sources. Based on these shared host demographics, coupled with a large offset as demonstrated in our companion paper, we conclude that preferred progenitors for FRB20240209A include magnetars formed through merging binary neutron stars/white dwarfs or the accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf, or a luminous X-ray binary. Together with FRB20200120E localized to a globular cluster in M81, our findings provide strong evidence that some fraction of FRBs may arise from a process distinct from the core collapse of massive stars., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures; Submitted to AAS Journals

The Local Universe (D < 120 Mpc) has been intensely studied for decades, with highly complete galaxy redshift surveys now publicly available. These data have driven density reconstructions of the underlying matter density field, as well as constrained simulations that aim to reproduce the observed structures. In this paper, we introduce a dispersion measure (DM) model that makes use of this detailed knowledge of our Local Universe within D < 120 Mpc. The model comprises three key components: (i) the DM from the Milky Way halo and the intra-group medium (up to 3.4 Mpc), derived from the HESTIA simulations, a series of constrained hydrodynamic simulations designed to reproduce our Local Group; (ii) the DM contribution from the large-scale intergalactic medium beyond the Local Group (3.4 Mpc < D < 120 Mpc), calculated using the HAMLET reconstructed matter density field; and (iii) the individual DM contributions from Local Universe galaxy halos and clusters based on data from the 2MASS Galaxy Group Catalog and the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database. This comprehensive model will be made available as a Python package. As the most realistic model to date for DM in the local volume, it promises to improve the constraints of DM contributions from the Intergalactic Medium and Circumgalactic Medium of FRBs, thereby enhancing the accuracy of cosmic baryon distribution calculations based on DM analysis of FRBs., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, Submitted to MNRAS

We present a data reduction pipeline (DRP) for Keck/NIRSPEC built as an addition to the PypeIt Python package. The DRP is capable of reducing multi-order echelle data taken both before and after the detector upgrade in 2018. As part of developing the pipeline, we implemented major improvements to the capabilities of the PypeIt package, including manual wavelength calibration for multi-order data and new output product that returns a coadded spectrum order-by-order. We also provide a procedure for correcting telluric absorption in NIRSPEC data by using the spectra of telluric standard stars taken near the time of the science spectra. This paper introduces an approach to analyze nonhomogeneous Poisson processes (NHPP) observed with noise, focusing on previously unstudied second-order characteristics of the noisy process. Utilizing a hierarchical Bayesian model with noisy data, we estimate hyperparameters governing a physically motivated NHPP intensity. Simulation studies demonstrate the reliability of this methodology in accurately estimating hyperparameters. Leveraging the posterior distribution, we then infer the probability of detecting a certain number of events within a given radius, the $k$-contact distance. We demonstrate our methodology with an application to observations of fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment's FRB Project (CHIME/FRB). This approach allows us to identify repeating FRB sources by bounding or directly simulating the probability of observing $k$ physically independent sources within some radius in the detection domain, or the $\textit{probability of coincidence}$ ($P_{\text{C}}$). The new methodology improves the repeater detection $P_{\text{C}}$ in 86% of cases when applied to the largest sample of previously classified observations, with a median improvement factor (existing metric over $P_{\text{C}}$ from our methodology) of $\sim$ 3000., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Annals of Applied Statistics. We study the [OII] profiles of emission line galaxies (ELGs) from the Early Data Release of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). To this end, we decompose and classify the shape of [OII] profiles with the first two eigenspectra derived from Principal Component Analysis. Our results show that DESI ELGs have diverse line profiles which can be categorized into three main types: (1) narrow lines with a median width of ~50 km/s, (2) broad lines with a median width of ~80 km/s, and (3) two-redshift systems with a median velocity separation of ~150 km/s, i.e., double-peak galaxies. To investigate the connections between the line profiles and galaxy properties, we utilize the information from the COSMOS dataset and compare the properties of ELGs, including star-formation rate (SFR) and galaxy morphology, with the average properties of reference star-forming galaxies with similar stellar mass, sizes, and redshifts. Our findings show that on average, DESI ELGs have higher SFR and more asymmetrical/disturbed morphology than the reference galaxies. Moreover, we uncover a relationship between the line profiles, the excess SFR and the excess asymmetry parameter, showing that DESI ELGs with broader [OII] line profiles have more disturbed morphology and higher SFR than the reference star-forming galaxies. Finally, we discuss possible physical mechanisms giving rise to the observed relationship and the implications of our findings on the galaxy clustering measurements, including the halo occupation distribution modeling of DESI ELGs and the observed excess velocity dispersion of the satellite ELGs., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are unique probes of extragalactic ionized baryonic structure as each signal, through its burst properties, holds information about the ionized matter it encounters along its sightline. FRB 20200723B is a burst with a scattering timescale of $\tau_\mathrm{400\,MHz} >$1 second at 400 MHz and a dispersion measure of DM $\sim$ 244 pc cm$^{-3}$. Observed across the entire CHIME/FRB frequency band, it is the single-component burst with the largest scattering timescale yet observed by CHIME/FRB. The combination of its high scattering timescale and relatively low dispersion measure present an uncommon opportunity to use FRB 20200723B to explore the properties of the cosmic web it traversed. With an $\sim$arcminute-scale localization region, we find the most likely host galaxy is NGC 4602 (with PATH probability $P(O|x)=0.985$), which resides $\sim$30 Mpc away within a sheet filamentary structure on the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. We place an upper limit on the average free electron density of this filamentary structure of $\langle n_e \rangle < 4.6^{+9.6}_{-2.0} \times 10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$, broadly consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. We investigate whether the source of scattering lies within the same galaxy as the FRB, or at a farther distance from an intervening structure along the line of sight. Metals in the diffuse, ionized gas at the boundary between the Milky Way's interstellar medium (ISM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM), known as the disk-halo interface (DHI), are valuable tracers of the feedback processes that drive the Galactic fountain. However, metallicity measurements in this region are challenging due to obscuration by the Milky Way ISM and uncertain ionization corrections that affect the total hydrogen column density. In this work, we constrain the ionization corrections to neutral hydrogen column densities using precisely measured electron column densities from the dispersion measure of pulsars that lie in the same globular clusters as UV-bright targets with high-resolution absorption spectroscopy. We address the blending of absorption lines with the ISM by jointly fitting Voigt profiles to all absorption components. We present our metallicity estimates for the DHI of the Milky Way based on detailed photoionization modeling to the absorption from ionized metal lines and ionization-corrected total hydrogen columns. Generally, the gas clouds show a large scatter in metallicity, ranging between $0.04-3.2\ Z_{\odot}$, implying that the DHI consists of a mixture of gaseous structures having multiple origins. We estimate the inflow and outflow timescales of the DHI ionized clouds to be $6 - 35$ Myr. We report the detection of an infalling cloud with super-solar metallicity that suggests a Galactic fountain mechanism, whereas at least one low-metallicity outflowing cloud ($Z < 0.1\ Z_{\odot}$) poses a challenge for Galactic fountain and feedback models., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Extended Ly$\alpha$ emission is routinely found around single quasars (QSO) across cosmic time. However, few studies have investigated how such emission changes in fields with physically associated QSO pairs, which should reside in dense environments and are predicted to be linked through intergalactic filaments. We present VLT/MUSE snapshot observations (45 min./source) to unveil extended Ly$\alpha$ emission on scales of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around the largest sample of physically associated QSO pairs to date, encompassing 8 pairs (14 observed QSOs) at $z$~3 with $i$-band magnitude between 18 and 22.75. The pairs are either at close (~50-100 kpc, 5 pairs) or wide (~450-500 kpc, 3 pairs) separation with velocity differences of $\Delta$v < 2000 km s$^{-1}$. We detect extended emission around 12 of the 14 targeted QSOs and investigate the luminosity, size, kinematics and morphology of these Ly$\alpha$ nebulae. On average, they span 90 kpc and are 2.8 $\times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ bright. Irrespective of the QSOs' projected distance, the nebulae often (~45 %) extend toward the other QSO in the pair, leading to asymmetric emission whose flux-weighted centroid is at an offset position from any QSO location. We show that large nebulae are preferentially aligned with the large-scale structure as traced by the two QSOs, and conclude that the cool gas (10$^4$ K) in the CGM traces well the direction of cosmic web filaments. Additionally, the radial profile of the Ly$\alpha$ surface brightness around QSO pairs can be described by a power law with a shallower slope (~$-1.6$) with respect to single QSOs (~$-2$), indicative of increased CGM densities out to large radii and/or enhanced contribution from the intergalactic medium (IGM). This paper presents the first public data release (DR1) of the FRB Line-of-sight Ionization Measurement From Lightcone AAOmega Mapping (FLIMFLAM) Survey, a wide field spectroscopic survey targeted on the fields of 10 precisely localized Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). DR1 encompasses spectroscopic data for 10,468 galaxy redshifts across 10 FRBs fields with z<0.4, covering approximately 26 deg^2 of the sky in total. FLIMFLAM is composed of several layers, encompassing the `Wide' (covering ~ degree or >10 Mpc scales), `Narrow', (several-arcminute or ~ Mpc) and integral field unit (`IFU'; ~ arcminute or ~ 100 kpc ) components. The bulk of the data comprise spectroscopy from the 2dF-AAOmega on the 3.9-meter Anglo-Australian Telescope, while most of the Narrow and IFU data was achieved using an ensemble of 8-10-meter class telescopes. We summarize the information on our selected FRB fields, the criteria for target selection, methodologies employed for data reduction, spectral analysis processes, and an overview of our data products. An evaluation of our data reveals an average spectroscopic completeness of 48.43%, with over 80% of the observed targets having secure redshifts. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a non-conservative tracer of interactions at the air-sea interface, respiration and photosynthesis, and advection. In this manuscript, we study extremes in the degree of oxygen saturation (SO), the ratio of DO to the maximum concentration given the water's temperature, salinity, and depth with SO=1 critically saturated. We perform the analysis with the California Underwater Glider Network (CUGN), which operates gliders on four lines that extend from the California coast to several hundred kilometers offshore, profiling to 500m depth every 3km. Since ~2017, the gliders have been equipped with a Sea-Bird 63 optode sensor to measure the DO content. We find that parcels with SO>1.1, hyperoxic extrema, occur primarily near-shore in the upper 50m of the water column and during non-winter months. Along Line 90 which originates in San Diego, these hyperoxic events occur primarily in stratified waters with shallow mixed layers. We hypothesize that photosynthesis elevates DO in sub-surface water that can not rapidly ventilate with the surface. Along the three other lines, hyperoxic extrema occur almost exclusively at the surface and are correlated with elevated Chl-a fluorescence suggesting they are primarily driven by blooms of photosynthesis. We also examine hypoxic extrema, finding that parcels with SO<0.9 and z<50m occur most frequently along the northernmost line where upwelling has greatest impact., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures; submitted to Journal of Physical Oceanography

Since 1978, sensors on remote-sensing satellites have provided global, multi-band images at optical wavelengths to assess ocean color. In parallel, sophisticated radiative transfer models account for attenuation and emission by the Earth's atmosphere and ocean, thereby estimating the water-leaving radiance or and remote-sensing reflectance Rrs. From these Rrs measurements, estimates of the absorption and scattering by seawater are inferred. We emphasize an inherent, physical degeneracy in the radiative transfer equation that relates Rrs to the absorption and backscattering coefficients a and b_b, aka inherent optical properties (IOPs). Because Rrs depends solely on the ratio of b_b to a, meaning one cannot retrieve independent functions for the non-water IOPs, a_nw and b_bnw, without a priori knowledge. Moreover, water generally dominates scattering at blue wavelengths and absorption at red wavelengths, further limiting retrievals of IOPs in the presence of noise. We demonstrate that all previous and current multi-spectral satellite observations lack the statistical power to measure more than 3 parameters total to describe a_nw and b_bnw. Due to the ubiquitous exponential-like absorption by color dissolved organic matter at short wavelengths (l<500nm), multi-spectral Rrs do not permit the detection of phytoplankton absorption a_ph without very strict priors. Furthermore, such priors lead to biased and uncertain retrievals of a_ph. Hyperspectral observations may recover a 4th and possibly 5th parameter describing only one or two aspects of the complexity of a_ph. These results cast doubt on decades of literature on IOP retrievals, including estimates of phytoplankton growth and biomass. We further conclude that NASA/PACE will greatly enhance our ability to measure the phytoplankton biomass of Earth, but challenges remain in resolving the IOPs., Comment: submitted to Nature Communications; 30 pages, 20 figures (3 main)

With wide-field phased array feed technology,the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is ideally suited to search for seemingly rare radio transient sources that are difficult to discover previous-generation narrow-field telescopes. The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transient (CRAFT) Survey Science Project has developed instrumentation to continuously search for fast radio transients (duration < 1 second) with ASKAP, with a particular focus on finding and localising Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Since 2018, the CRAFT survey has been searching for FRBs and other fast transients by incoherently adding the intensities received by individual ASKAP antennas, and then correcting for the impact of frequency dispersion on these short-duration signals in the resultant incoherent sum (ICS) in real-time. This low-latency detection enables the triggering of voltage buffers, which facilitates the localisation of the transient source and the study of spectro-polarimetric properties at high time resolution. Here we report the sample of 43 FRBs discovered in this CRAFT/ICS survey to date. This includes 22 FRBs that had not previously been reported: 16 FRBs localised by ASKAP to < 1 arcsec and 6 FRBs localised to ~ 10 arcmin. Of the new arcsecond-localised FRBs, we have identified and characterised host galaxies (and measured redshifts) for 11. The median of all 30 measured host redshifts from the survey to date is z=0.23. We summarise results from the searches, in particular those contributing to our understanding of the burst progenitors and emission mechanisms, and on the use of bursts as probes of intervening media. We conclude by foreshadowing future FRB surveys with ASKAP using a coherent detection system that is currently being commissioned. We have used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map CO(3-2) emission from a galaxy, DLA-B1228g, associated with the high-metallicity damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber at $z \approx 2.1929$ towards the QSO PKS B1228-113. At an angular resolution of $\approx0.32''\times0.24''$, DLA-B1228g shows extended CO(3-2) emission with a deconvolved size of $\approx0.78''\times0.18''$, i.e. a spatial extent of $\approx6.4$ kpc. We detect extended stellar emission from DLA-B1228g in a Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 F160W image, and find that H$\alpha$ emission is detected in a Very Large Telescope SINFONI image from only one side of the galaxy. While the clumpy nature of the F160W emission and the offset between the kinematic and physical centers of the CO(3-2) emission are consistent with a merger scenario, this appears unlikely due to the lack of strong H$\alpha$ emission, the symmetric double-peaked CO(3-2) line profile, the high molecular gas depletion timescale, and the similar velocity dispersions in the two halves of the CO(3-2) image. Kinematic modelling reveals that the CO(3-2) emission is consistent with arising from an axisymmetric rotating disk, with an exponential profile, a rotation velocity of $v_{rot}=328\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$, and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_{v}=62\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$. The high value of the ratio $v_{rot}/\sigma_v$, $\approx5.3$, implies that DLA-B1228g is a rotation-dominated cold disk galaxy, the second case of a high-$z$ HI-absorption-selected galaxy identified with a cold rotating disk. We obtain a dynamical mass of $M_{dyn}= (1.5\pm0.1)\times10^{11}~M_\odot$, similar to the molecular gas mass of $\approx10^{11} M_\odot$ inferred from earlier CO(1-0) studies; this implies that the galaxy is baryon-dominated in its inner regions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. Localisation of fast radio bursts (FRBs) to arcsecond and sub-arcsecond precision maximizes their potential as cosmological probes. To that end, FRB detection instruments are deploying triggered complex-voltage capture systems to localize FRBs, identify their host galaxy and measure a redshift. Here, we report the discovery and localisation of two FRBs (20220717A and 20220905A) that were captured by the transient buffer system deployed by the MeerTRAP instrument at the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. We were able to localize the FRBs to a precision of $\sim$1 arc-second that allowed us to unambiguously identify the host galaxy for FRB 20220717A (posterior probability$\sim$0.97). FRB 20220905A lies in a crowded region of the sky with a tentative identification of a host galaxy but the faintness and the difficulty in obtaining an optical spectrum preclude a conclusive association. The bursts show low linear polarization fractions (10--17$\%$) that conform to the large diversity in the polarization fraction observed in apparently non-repeating FRBs akin to single pulses from neutron stars. We also show that the host galaxy of FRB 20220717A contributes roughly 15$\%$ of the total dispersion measure (DM), indicating that it is located in a plasma-rich part of the host galaxy which can explain the large rotation measure. We present an analysis of \textit{HST}/COS/G160M observations of CIV in the inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a novel sample of eight z$\sim$0, L$\approx$L$^{\star}$ galaxies, paired with UV-bright QSOs at impact parameters ($R_\mathrm{proj}$) between 25-130 kpc. The galaxies in this stellar-mass-controlled sample (log$_{10}$M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$ $\sim$ 10.2-10.9 M$_{\odot}$) host super-massive black holes (SMBHs) with dynamically-measured masses spanning log$_{10}$M$_\mathrm{BH}$/M$_{\odot}$ $\sim$ 6.8-8.4; this allows us to compare our results with models of galaxy formation where the integrated feedback history from the SMBH alters the CGM over long timescales. We find that the \ion{C}{IV} column density measurements (N$_{\rm C IV}$) (average log$_{10}$N$_{\rm C IV, CH}$ = 13.94$\pm$0.09 cm$^{-2}$) are largely consistent with existing measurements from other surveys of N$_{\rm C IV}$ in the CGM (average log$_{10}$N$_{\rm C IV, Lit}$ = 13.90$\pm$0.08 cm$^{-2}$), but do not show obvious variation as a function of the SMBH mass. In contrast, specific star-formation rate (sSFR) is highly correlated with the ionized content of the CGM. We find a large spread in sSFR for galaxies with log$_{10}$M$_\mathrm{BH}$/M$_{\odot}$ $>$ 7.0, where the CGM \ion{C}{IV} content shows clear dependence on galaxy sSFR but not M$_\mathrm{BH}$. Our results do not indicate an obvious causal link between CGM CIV and the mass of the galaxy's SMBH; however through comparisons to the EAGLE, Romulus25, $\&$ IllustrisTNG simulations, we find that our sample is likely too small to constrain such causality., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 28 pages, 7 figures

Circumgalactic Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) nebulae are gaseous halos around galaxies exhibiting luminous extended Ly$\alpha$ emission. This work investigates Ly$\alpha$ nebulae from deep imaging of $\sim12~\mathrm{deg}^2$ sky, targeted by the MAMMOTH-Subaru survey. Utilizing the wide-field capability of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), we present one of the largest blind Ly$\alpha$ nebula selections, including QSO nebulae, Ly$\alpha$ blobs, and radio galaxy nebulae down to typical $2\sigma$ Ly$\alpha$ surface brightness of $(5-10)\times10^{-18}\mathrm{~erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}~arcsec^{-2}}$. The sample contains 117 nebulae with Ly$\alpha$ sizes of 40 - 400 kpc, and the most gigantic one spans about 365 kpc, referred to as the Ivory Nebula. Combining multiwavelength data, we investigate diverse nebula populations and associated galaxies. We find a small fraction of Ly$\alpha$ nebulae have QSOs ($\sim7\%$), luminous infrared galaxies ($\sim1\%$), and radio galaxies ($\sim 2\%$). Remarkably, among the 28 enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebulae (ELANe) exceeding 100 kpc, about 80\% are associated with UV-faint galaxies ($M_\mathrm{UV} > -22$), categorized as Type II ELANe. We underscore that Type II ELANe constitute the majority but remain largely hidden in current galaxy and QSO surveys. Dusty starburst and obscured AGN activity are proposed to explain the nature of Type II ELANe. The SED of stacking all Ly$\alpha$ nebulae also reveals signs of massive dusty star-forming galaxies with obscured AGNs. We propose a model to explain the dusty nature where the diverse populations of Ly$\alpha$ nebulae capture massive galaxies at different evolutionary stages undergoing violent assembling. We report the identification of a quasar overdensity in the BOSSJ0210 field, dubbed Cosmic Himalayas, consisting of 11 quasars at $z=2.16-2.20$, the densest overdensity of quasars ($17\sigma$) in the $\sim$10,000 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present the spatial distributions of galaxies and quasars and an HI absorption map of the intergalactic medium (IGM). On the map of 465 galaxies selected from the MAMMOTH-Subaru survey, we find two galaxy density peaks that do not fall on the quasar overdensity but instead exist at the northwest and southeast sides, approximately 25 $h^{-1}$ comoving-Mpc apart from the quasar overdensity. With a spatial resolution of 15 $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc in projection, we produce a three-dimensional HI tomography map by the IGM Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of 23 SDSS/eBOSS quasars behind the quasar overdensity. Surprisingly, the quasar overdensity coincides with neither an absorption peak nor a transmission peak of IGM HI but lies near the border separating opaque and transparent volumes, with the more luminous quasars located in an environment with lesser IGM HI. Hence remarkably, the overdensity region traced by the 11 quasars, albeit all in coherently active states, has no clear coincidence with peaks of galaxies or HI absorption densities. Current physical scenarios with mixtures of HI overdensities and quasar photoionization cannot fully interpret the emergence of Cosmic Himalayas, suggesting this peculiar structure is an excellent laboratory to unveil the interplay between galaxies, quasars, and the IGM., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) last for milliseconds and arrive at Earth from cosmological distances. While their origin(s) and emission mechanism(s) are presently unknown, their signals bear similarities with the much less luminous radio emission generated by pulsars within our Galaxy and several lines of evidence point toward neutron star origins. For pulsars, the linear polarisation position angle (PA) often exhibits evolution over the pulse phase that is interpreted within a geometric framework known as the rotating vector model (RVM). Here, we report on a fast radio burst, FRB 20221022A, detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) and localized to a nearby host galaxy ($\sim 65\; \rm{Mpc}$), MCG+14-02-011. This one-off FRB displays a $\sim 130$ degree rotation of its PA over its $\sim 2.5\; \rm{ms}$ burst duration, closely resembling the "S"-shaped PA evolution commonly seen from pulsars and some radio magnetars. The PA evolution disfavours emission models involving shocks far from the source and instead suggests magnetospheric origins for this source which places the emission region close to the FRB central engine, echoing similar conclusions drawn from tempo-polarimetric studies of some repeating sources. This FRB's PA evolution is remarkably well-described by the RVM and, although we cannot determine the inclination and magnetic obliquity due to the unknown period/duty cycle of the source, we can dismiss extremely short-period pulsars (e.g., recycled millisecond pulsars) as potential progenitors. RVM-fitting appears to favour a source occupying a unique position in the period/duty cycle phase space that implies tight opening angles for the beamed emission, significantly reducing burst energy requirements of the source.

The dispersion measure of fast radio bursts (FRBs), arising from the interactions of the pulses with free electrons along the propagation path, constitutes a unique probe of the cosmic baryon distribution. Their constraining power is further enhanced in combination with observations of the foreground large-scale structure and intervening galaxies. In this work, we present the first constraints on the partition of the cosmic baryons between the intergalactic medium (IGM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM), inferred from the FLIMFLAM spectroscopic survey. In its first data release, the FLIMFLAM survey targeted galaxies in the foreground of 8 localized FRBs. Using Bayesian techniques, we reconstruct the underlying ~Mpc-scale matter density field that is traced by the IGM gas. Simultaneously, deeper spectroscopy of intervening foreground galaxies (at impact parameters $b_\perp \lesssim r_{200}$) and the FRB host galaxies constrains the contribution from the CGM. Applying Bayesian parameter inference to our data and assuming a fiducial set of priors, we infer the IGM cosmic baryon fraction to be $f_{\rm igm}=0.59^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, and a CGM gas fraction of $f_{\rm gas} = 0.55^{+0.26}_{-0.29}$ for $10^{10}\,M_\odot \lesssim M_{\rm halo}\lesssim 10^{13}\,M_\odot$ halos. The mean FRB host dispersion measure (rest-frame) in our sample is $\langle \rm{DM_{host}}\rangle = 90^{+29}_{-19}\rm{pc~cm^{-3}}$, of which $\langle{\rm DM_{host}^{unk}}\rangle =69^{+28}_{-19}~\rm{pc~cm^{-3}}$ arises from the host galaxy ISM and/or the FRB progenitor environment. While our current $f_{\rm igm}$ and $f_{\rm gas}$ uncertainties are too broad to constrain most galactic feedback models, this result marks the first measurement of the IGM and CGM baryon fractions, as well as the first systematic separation of the FRB host dispersion measure into two components: arising from the halo and from the inner ISM/FRB engine., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables; Submitted to ApJ

We present GeMS/GSAOI observations of five fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies with sub-arcsecond localizations. We examine and quantify their spatial distributions and locations with respect to their host galaxy light distributions, finding a median host-normalized offset of 2.09 r_e and in fainter regions of the host. When combined with the FRB sample from Mannings et al. (2021), we find that FRBs are statistically distinct from Ca-rich transients in terms of light and from SGRBs and LGRBs in terms of host-normalized offset. We further find that most FRBs are in regions of elevated local stellar mass surface densities in comparison to the mean global values of their hosts. This, in combination with the combined FRB sample trace the distribution of stellar mass, points towards a possible similarity of the environments of CC-SNe and FRBs. We also find that 4/5 FRB hosts exhibit distinct spiral arm features, and the bursts originating from such hosts tend to appear on or close to the spiral structure of their hosts, with a median distance of 0.53 kpc. With many well-localized FRB detections looming on the horizon, we will be able to better characterize the properties of FRB environments relative to their host galaxies and other transient classes., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) Ly$\alpha$ integral field spectroscopy of the fields surrounding 14 Damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z \approx 2$. Of these 14 DLAs, 9 have high metallicities ([M/H]$~> -0.3$), and 4 of those 9 feature a CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter $\lesssim 30$ kpc. Our search reaches median Ly$\alpha$ line flux sensitivities of $\sim 2 \times 10^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ over apertures of $\sim6$ kpc and out to impact parameters of $\sim50$ kpc. We recover the Ly$\alpha$ flux of three known Ly$\alpha$-emitting H I-selected galaxies in our sample. In addition, we find two Ly$\alpha$ emitters at impact parameters of $\approx 50-70$ kpc from the high metallicity DLA at $z \approx 1.96$ toward QSO B0551-366. This field also contains a massive CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter of $\approx 15$ kpc. Apart from the field with QSO B0551-366, we do not detect significant Ly$\alpha$ emission in any of the remaining 8 high-metallicity DLA fields. Considering the depth of our observations and our ability to recover previously known Ly$\alpha$ emitters, we conclude that H I-selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity DLAs at $z \approx 2$ are dusty, and therefore might feature low Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions. Our results indicate that complementary approaches -- using Ly$\alpha$, CO, H$\alpha$, and [C II] 158$\mu$m emission -- are necessary to identify the wide range of galaxy types associated with $z \approx 2$ DLAs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 17 pages and 9 figures. FRB 20220610A is a high-redshift Fast Radio Burst (FRB) that has not been observed to repeat. Here, we present rest-frame UV and optical $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ observations of the field of FRB 20220610A. The imaging reveals seven extended sources, one of which we identify as the most likely host galaxy with a spectroscopic redshift of $z$=1.017. We spectroscopically confirm at least three additional sources to be at the same redshift, and identify the system as a compact galaxy group with possible signs of interaction among group members. We determine the host of FRB 20220610A to be a star-forming galaxy with stellar mass of $\approx10^{9.7}\,M_{\odot}$, mass-weighted age of $\approx2.6$~Gyr, and star formation rate (integrated over the last 100 Myr) of $\approx1.7$~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$. These host properties are commensurate with the star-forming field galaxy population at z~1 and trace their properties analogously to the population of low-$z$ FRB hosts. Based on estimates of the total stellar mass of the galaxy group, we calculate a fiducial contribution to the observed Dispersion Measure (DM) from the intragroup medium of $\approx 110-220$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (rest-frame). This leaves a significant excess of $500^{+272}_{-109}$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (in the observer frame), with additional sources of DM possibly originating from the circumburst environment, host galaxy interstellar medium, and/or foreground structures along the line of sight. We present analysis of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of 67 [OIII]-selected star-forming galaxies at a redshift range of $z=1.99 - 2.32$ ($z_{\text{med}} = 2.16$) using \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} Wide Field Camera 3 grism spectroscopy from the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution (QSAGE) survey. Metallicities were determined using empirical gas-phase metallicity calibrations based on the strong emission lines [OII]3727,3729, [OIII]4959,5007 and H$\beta$. Star-forming galaxies were identified, and distinguished from active-galactic nuclei, via Mass-Excitation diagrams. Using $z\sim0$ metallicity calibrations, we observe a negative offset in the $z=2.2$ MZR of $\approx -0.51$ dex in metallicity when compared to locally derived relationships, in agreement with previous literature analysis. A similar offset of $\approx -0.46$ dex in metallicity is found when using empirical metallicity calibrations that are suitable out to $z\sim5$, though our $z=2.2$ MZR, in this case, has a shallower slope. We find agreement between our MZR and those predicted from various galaxy evolution models and simulations. Additionally, we explore the extended fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) which includes an additional dependence on star formation rate (SFR). Our results consistently support the existence of the FMR, as well as revealing an offset of $0.28\pm0.04$ dex in metallicity compared to locally-derived relationships, consistent with previous studies at similar redshifts. We interpret the negative correlation with SFR at fixed mass, inferred from an FMR existing for our sample, as being caused by the efficient accretion of metal-poor gas fuelling SFR at cosmic noon., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We report on contemporaneous optical observations at ~10 ms timescales from the fast radio burst (FRB) 20180916B of two repeat bursts (FRB 20201023, FRB 20220908) taken with the 'Alopeke camera on the Gemini North telescope. These repeats have radio fluences of 2.8 and 3.5 Jy ms, respectively, approximately in the lower 50th percentile for fluence from this repeating burst. The 'Alopeke data reveal no significant optical detections at the FRB position and we place 3-sigma upper limits to the optical fluences of <8.3e-3 and <7.7e-3 Jy ms after correcting for line-of-sight extinction. Together, these yield the most sensitive limits to the optical-to-radio fluence ratio of an FRB on these timescales with eta < 3e-3 by roughly an order of magnitude. These measurements rule out progenitor models where FRB 20180916B has a similar fluence ratio to optical pulsars similar to the Crab pulsar or optical emission is produced as inverse Compton radiation in a pulsar magnetosphere or young supernova remnant. We present the host galaxies of four apparently non-repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs), FRBs 20181223C, 20190418A, 20191220A, and 20190425A, reported in the first Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME/FRB) catalog. Our selection of these FRBs is based on a planned hypothesis testing framework where we search all CHIME/FRB Catalog-1 events that have low extragalactic dispersion measure (< 100 pc cm$^{-3}$), with high Galactic latitude (|b| > 10$\deg$) and saved baseband data. We associate the selected FRBs to galaxies with moderate to high star-formation rates located at redshifts between 0.027 and 0.071. We also search for possible multi-messenger counterparts, including persistent compact radio and gravitational wave (GW) sources, and find none. Utilizing the four FRB hosts from this study along with the hosts of 14 published local Universe FRBs (z < 0.1) with robust host association, we conduct an FRB host demographics analysis. We find all 18 local Universe FRB hosts in our sample to be spirals (or late-type galaxies), including the host of FRB 20220509G, which was previously reported to be elliptical. Using this observation, we scrutinize proposed FRB source formation channels and argue that core-collapse supernovae are likely the dominant channel to form FRB progenitors. Moreover, we infer no significant difference in the host properties of repeating and apparently non-repeating FRBs in our local Universe FRB host sample. Finally, we find the burst rates of these four apparently non-repeating FRBs to be consistent with those of the sample of localized repeating FRBs observed by CHIME/FRB. We report the first statistical analyses of [CII] and dust continuum observations in six strong OI absorber fields at the end of the reionization epoch obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). Combined with one [CII] emitter reported in Wu et al. (2021), we detect one OI-associated [CII] emitter in six fields. At redshifts of OI-absorbers in non-detection fields, no emitters are brighter than our detection limit within impact parameters of 50 kpc and velocity offsets between $\pm200\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$. The averaged [CII]-detection upper limit is $< 0.06$ Jy ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$ (3$\sigma$), corresponding to the [CII] luminosity of $L_{\rm [CII]} <5.8\times 10^7\ L_{\odot}$ and the [CII]-based star formation rate of ${\rm SFR_{\rm [CII]}} < 5.5$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Cosmological simulations suggest that only $\sim10^{-2.5}$ [CII] emitters around [OI] absorbers have comparable SFR to our detection limit. Although the detection in one out of six fields is reported, an order of magnitude number excess of emitters obtained from our ALMA observations supports that the contribution of massive galaxies that caused the metal enrichment cannot be ignored. Further, we also found 14 tentative galaxy candidates with S/N of $\approx4.3$ at large impact parameters ($>50$ kpc) and having larger outflow velocities within $\pm 600$ km s$^{-1}$. If these detections are confirmed in the future, then the mechanism of pushing metals at larger distances with higher velocities needs to be further explored from the theoretical side., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. We present new measurements of the mean transmitted flux in the hydrogen Ly$\rm \alpha$ and a relative transmitted flux measurement in Ly$\rm \beta$ using 27,008 quasar spectra from the Fourteenth Data Release (DR14) of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). Individual spectra are first combined into 16 composites with mean redshifts in the range of $2.8 \rm{4.0}$ on $\tau_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}$, and our determinations of $\Delta \tau_{\rm{Ly\beta}}$, are dominated by systematic errors, likely arising from bias and uncertainties in estimates of the quasar continuum. Our $\tau_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}$ values show a smooth increase by a factor of 5 over the redshift range $z=2.4-4.4$., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present analytical and numerical models of the bright long GRB 210822A at $z=1.736$. The intrinsic extreme brightness exhibited in the optical, which is very similar to other bright GRBs (e.g., GRBs 080319B, 130427A, 160625A 190114C, and 221009A), makes GRB 210822A an ideal case for studying the evolution of this particular kind of GRB. We use optical data from the RATIR instrument starting at $T+315.9$ s, with publicly available optical data from other ground-based observatories, as well as Swift/UVOT, and X-ray data from the Swift/XRT instrument. The temporal profiles and spectral properties during the late stages align consistently with the conventional forward shock model, complemented by a reverse shock element that dominates optical emissions during the initial phases ($T<300$ s). Furthermore, we observe a break at $T=80000$s that we interpreted as evidence of a jet break, which constrains the opening angle to be about $\theta_\mathrm{j}=(3-5)$ degrees. Finally, we apply a machine-learning technique to model the multi-wavelength light curve of GRB 210822A using the AFTERGLOWPY library. We estimate the angle of sight $\theta_{obs}=(6.4 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-1}$ degrees, the energy $E_0=(7.9 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{53}$ ergs, the electron index $p=2.54 \pm 0.10$, the thermal energy fraction in electrons $\epsilon_\mathrm{e}=(4.63 \pm 0.91) \times 10^{-5}$ and in the magnetic field $\epsilon_\mathrm{B}= (8.66 \pm 1.01) \times 10^{-6}$, the efficiency $\chi = 0.89 \pm 0.01$, and the density of the surrounding medium $n_\mathrm{0} = 0.85 \pm 0.01 cm^{-3}$., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after moderate revision, 12 pages, 6 figures

FRB 20210912A is a fast radio burst (FRB), detected and localised to sub-arcsecond precision by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. No host galaxy has been identified for this burst despite the high precision of its localisation and deep optical and infrared follow-up, to 5-$\sigma$ limits of $R=26.7$ mag and $K_\mathrm{s}=24.9$ mag with the Very Large Telescope. The combination of precise radio localisation and deep optical imaging has almost always resulted in the secure identification of a host galaxy, and this is the first case in which the line-of-sight is not obscured by the Galactic disk. The dispersion measure of this burst, $\mathrm{DM_{FRB}}=1233.696\pm0.006~\mathrm{pc}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, allows for a large source redshift of $z>1$ according to the Macquart relation. It could thus be that the host galaxy is consistent with the known population of FRB hosts, but is too distant to detect in our observations ($z>0.7$ for a host like that of the first repeating FRB source, FRB 20121102A); that it is more nearby with a significant excess in $\mathrm{DM_{host}}$, and thus dimmer than any known FRB host; or, least likely, that the FRB is truly hostless. We consider each possibility, making use of the population of known FRB hosts to frame each scenario. The fact of the missing host has ramifications for the FRB field: even with high-precision localisation and deep follow-up, some FRB hosts may be difficult to detect, with more distant hosts being the less likely to be found. Remote sensing observations of the Earth's surface are frequently stymied by clouds, water vapour, and aerosols in our atmosphere. These degrade or preclude the measurementof quantities critical to scientific and, hence, societal applications. In this study, we train a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm with high-fidelity ocean simulations in order to accurately reconstruct masked or missing data in sea surface temperature (SST)--i.e. one of 54 essential climate variables identified by the Global Climate Observing System. We demonstrate that the Enki model repeatedly outperforms previously adopted inpainting techniques by up to an order-of-magnitude in reconstruction error, while displaying high performance even in circumstances where the majority of pixels are masked. Furthermore, experiments on real infrared sensor data with masking fractions of at least 40% show reconstruction errors of less than the known sensor uncertainty (RMSE < ~0.1K). We attribute Enki's success to the attentive nature of NLP combined with realistic SST model outputs, an approach that may be extended to other remote sensing variables. We present high-resolution 1.5 $-$ 6 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and infrared observations of the extremely active repeating fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 20201124A and its barred spiral host galaxy. We constrain the location and morphology of star formation in the host and search for a persistent radio source (PRS) coincident with FRB 20201124A. We resolve the morphology of the radio emission across all frequency bands and measure a star formation rate SFR $\approx 8.9\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, approximately $\approx 2.5-6$ times larger than optically-inferred SFRs, demonstrating dust-obscured star formation throughout the host. Compared to a sample of all known FRB hosts with radio emission, the host of FRB 20201124A has the most significantly obscured star formation. While HST observations show the FRB to be offset from the bar or spiral arms, the radio emission extends to the FRB location. We propose that the FRB progenitor could have formed in situ (e.g., a magnetar born from a massive star explosion). It is still plausible, although less likely, that the progenitor of FRB 20201124A migrated from the central bar of the host. We further place a limit on the luminosity of a putative PRS at the FRB position of $L_{\rm 6.0 \ GHz}$ $\lesssim$ 1.8 $\times 10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$, among the deepest PRS luminosity limits to date. We present the first X-ray census of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies to conduct the deepest search for AGN and X-ray counterparts to date. Our sample includes seven well-localized FRBs with unambiguous host associations and existing deep Chandra observations, including two events for which we present new observations. We find evidence for AGN in two FRB host galaxies based on the presence of X-ray emission coincident with their centers, including the detection of a luminous ($L_X \approx 5 \times 10^{42} \ \rm erg \ s^{-1}$) X-ray source at the nucleus of FRB20190608B's host, for which we infer an SMBH mass of $\rm M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{8} \ M_{\odot}$ and an Eddington ratio $L_{\rm bol}/ L_{\rm Edd} \approx 0.02$, characteristic of geometrically thin disks in Seyfert galaxies. We also report nebular emission line fluxes for 24 highly secure FRB hosts (including 10 hosts for the first time), and assess their placement on a BPT diagram, finding that FRB hosts trace the underlying galaxy population. We further find that the hosts of repeating FRBs are not confined to the star-forming locus, contrary to previous findings. Finally, we place constraints on associated X-ray counterparts to FRBs in the context of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), and find that existing X-ray limits for FRBs rule out ULXs brighter than $L_X \gtrsim 10^{40} \ \rm erg \ s^{-1}$. Leveraging the CHIME/FRB catalog and existing ULX catalogs, we search for spatially coincident ULX-FRB pairs. We identify two ULX in the galaxy NGC 2633 that are spatially coincident with the repeating FRB20180908B and for which the DM-inferred redshift is comparable to the distance of the galaxy, assuming a $\rm DM_{host}$ contribution of $150 \ \rm pc \ cm^{-3}$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; submitted to ApJ

The repeating fast radio burst FRB20190520B is an anomaly of the FRB population thanks to its high dispersion measure (DM$=1205\,$pc/cc) despite its low redshift of $z_\mathrm{frb}=0.241$. This excess has been attributed to a large host contribution of $DM_{host}\approx 900\,$pc/cc, far larger than any other known FRB. In this paper, we describe spectroscopic observations of the FRB20190520B field obtained as part of the FLIMFLAM survey, which yielded 701 galaxy redshifts in the field. We find multiple foreground galaxy groups and clusters, for which we then estimated halo masses by comparing their richness with numerical simulations. We discover two separate $M_{halo} >10^{14}\,M_\odot$ galaxy clusters, at $z=0.1867$ and $z=0.2170$, respectively, that are directly intersected by the FRB sightline within their characteristic halo radius \rvir{}. Subtracting off their estimated DM contributions as well that of the diffuse intergalactic medium, we estimate a host contribution of $DM_{host}=430^{+140}_{-220}\,$pc/cc or $DM_{host}=280^{+140}_{-170}\,$pc/cc (observed frame) depending on whether we assume the halo gas extends to $r_{200}$ or $2\times r_{200}$. This significantly smaller $DM_{host}$ -- no longer the largest known value -- is now consistent with H$\alpha$ emission measures of the host galaxy without invoking unusually high gas temperatures. Combined with the observed FRB scattering timescale, we estimate the turbulent fluctuation and geometric amplification factor of the scattering layer to be $\tilde{F} G\approx4.5 - 11\,(\mathrm{pc^2\;km})^{-1/3}$, suggesting most of the gas is close to the FRB host. We performed Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) analysis of 7.8 million Sea Surface Topography Merged Altimeter L4 cdr grid cutouts in an effort to identify rare (possibly unknown) physical phenomenon sea surface height (SSH) data. The algorithm used for the project is Ulmo which is a probabilistic autoencoder (PAE), originally developed for sea surface temperature data. A PAE is made of an autoencoder for taking the extracted images and encoding them into a latent representation of the data, and a normalizing flow which takes the encoding and maps it to a normal distribution for probabilistic interpretation. A Log-Likelihood (LL) value for each cutout was calculated from this normal distribution and we defined the images with the lowest 0.1 percentile of LL values as anomalies. This thesis presents a new algorithm to mitigate cloud masking in the analysis of sea surface temperature (SST) data generated by remote sensing technologies, e.g., Clouds interfere with the analysis of all remote sensing data using wavelengths shorter than 12 microns, significantly limiting the quantity of usable data and creating a biased geographical distribution (towards equatorial and coastal regions). To address this issue, we propose an unsupervised machine learning algorithm called Enki which uses a Vision Transformer with Masked Autoencoding to reconstruct masked pixels. We train four different models of Enki with varying mask ratios (t) of 10%, 35%, 50%, and 75% on the generated Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) dataset referred to as LLC4320. To evaluate performance, we reconstruct a validation set of LLC4320 SST images with random ``clouds'' corrupting p=10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% of the images with individual patches of 4x4 pixel^2. We consistently find that at all levels of p there is one or multiple models that reconstruct the images with a mean RMSE of less than 0.03K, i.e. lower than the estimated sensor error of VIIRS data. Similarly, at the individual patch level, the reconstructions have RMSE 8x smaller than the fluctuations in the patch. And, as anticipated, reconstruction errors are larger for images with a higher degree of complexity. Our analysis also reveals that patches along the image border have systematically higher reconstruction error; we recommend ignoring these in production. We conclude that Enki shows great promise to surpass in-painting as a means of reconstructing cloud masking. We report on the commensal ASKAP detection of a fast radio burst (FRB), FRB20211127I, and the detection of neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in the FRB host galaxy, WALLABYJ131913-185018 (hereafter W13-18). This collaboration between the CRAFT and WALLABY survey teams marks the fifth, and most distant, FRB host galaxy detected in HI, not including the Milky Way. We find that W13-18 has a HI mass of $M_{\rm HI}$ = 6.5 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, a HI-to-stellar mass ratio of 2.17, and coincides with a continuum radio source of flux density at 1.4 GHz of 1.3 mJy. The HI global spectrum of W13-18 appears to be asymmetric, albeit the HI observation has a low S/N, and the galaxy itself appears modestly undisturbed. These properties are compared to the early literature of HI emission detected in other FRB hosts to date, where either the HI global spectra were strongly asymmetric, or there were clearly disrupted HI intensity map distributions. W13-18 lacks sufficient S/N to determine whether it is significantly less asymmetric in its HI distribution than previous examples of FRB host galaxies. However, there are no strong signs of a major interaction in the HI or optical image of the host galaxy that would stimulate a burst of star formation and hence the production of putative FRB progenitors related to massive stars and their compact remnants., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We conducted a systematic survey of the environment of high-z quasars at submillimeter wavelengths to unveil and characterize the surrounding distribution of dusty submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We took sensitive JCMT/SCUBA-2 observations for 3 enormous Lyman-alpha nebulae (ELANe) and 17 quasar fields in the redshift range 24 or detected in both bands at S/N>3. We ran Monte Carlo simulations to construct 850$\mu$m number counts and unveil an excess of sources in 75% of the targeted fields. Overall, regions around ELANe and quasars are overabundant with respect to blank fields by a factor of $3.4\pm0.4$ and $2.5\pm0.2$, respectively. Therefore, the excess of SMGs is likely part of the Mpc-scale environment around these systems. By combining all fields and repeating the count analysis in radial apertures, we find a decrease in the overdensity factor from >3 within $\sim 2$ cMpc to $\sim2$ at the edge of the surveyed field ($\sim10$ cMpc), suggesting that the physical extent of the overdensities is larger than our maps. We computed preferred directions for the overdensities of SMGs from the positions of the sources and used them to orient and create stacked maps of source densities for the quasars' environment. This stacking unveils an elongated structure reminiscent of a large-scale filament with a scale width of $\approx 3$ cMpc. Finally, the directions of the overdensities are roughly aligned with the major axis of the Ly$\alpha$ nebulae, suggesting that the latter trace, on hundreds of kpc, the central regions of the projected large-scale structure described by the SMGs on Mpc scales. Temporal broadening is a commonly observed property of fast radio bursts (FRBs), associated with turbulent media which cause radiowave scattering. Similarly to dispersion, scattering is an important probe of the media along the line of sight to an FRB source, such as the circum-burst or circum-galactic mediums (CGM). Measurements of characteristic scattering times alone are insufficient to constrain the position of the dominant scattering media along the line of sight. However, where more than one scattering screen exists, Galactic scintillation can be leveraged to form strong constraints. We quantify the scattering and scintillation in 10 FRBs with 1) known host galaxies and redshifts and 2) captured voltage data enabling high-time resolution analysis. We find strong evidence for two screens in three cases. For FRBs 20190608B and 20210320C, we find evidence for scattering screens less than approximately 16.7 and 3000 kpc respectively, from their sources, consistent with the scattering occurring in the circum-burst environment, the host ISM (inter-stellar medium) or the CGM. For FRB 20201124A we find a low modulation index that evolves over the burst's scattering tail, indicating the presence of a scattering screen $\approx9$ kpc from the host, and excluding the circum-burst environment from potential scattering sites. By assuming that pulse broadening is contributed by the host galaxy ISM or circum-burst environment, the lack of observed scintillation in four FRBs in our sample suggests that existing models may be poor estimators of scattering times associated with the Milky Way's ISM, similar to the anomalously low scattering observed for FRB 20201124A., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. We use medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy of close pairs of quasars to analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding 32 damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption systems (DLAs). The primary quasar sightline in each pair probes an intervening DLA in the redshift range $1.610^{13}~\rm cm^{-2}$ within 100 kpc of DLAs are larger by $2\sigma$ than those measured in the CGM of Lyman break galaxies (C$_f(N_\text{CII})>0.89$ and C$_f(N_\text{SiII})=0.75_{-0.17}^{+0.12}$). Metallicity constraints derived from ionic ratios for nine CGM systems with negligible ionization corrections and $N_\text{HI}>10^{18.5}~\rm cm^{-2}$ show a significant degree of scatter (with metallicities/limits across the range $-2.06\lesssim\log Z/Z_{\odot}\lesssim-0.75$), suggesting inhomogeneity in the metal distribution in these environments. Velocity widths of $\text{CIV}\lambda1548$ and low-ionization metal species in the DLA vs. CGM sightlines are strongly ($>2\sigma$) correlated, suggesting they trace the potential well of the host halo over $R_\bot\lesssim300$ kpc scales. At the same time, velocity centroids for $\text{CIV}\lambda1548$ differ in DLA vs. CGM sightlines by $>100~\rm km\ s^{-1}$ for $\sim50\%$ of velocity components, but few components have velocities that would exceed the escape velocity assuming dark matter host halos of $\ge10^{12}M_\odot$., Comment: 44 pages, 21 Figures, 5 Tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Macquart relation describes the correlation between the dispersion measure (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and the redshift $z$ of their host galaxies. The scatter of the Macquart relation is sensitive to the distribution of baryons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) including those ejected from galactic halos through feedback processes. The width of the distribution in DMs from the cosmic web (${\rm DM}_{\rm cosmic}$) is parameterized by a fluctuation parameter $F$, which is related to the cosmic DM variance by $\sigma_{\rm DM}= F z^{-0.5}$. In this work, we present a new measurement of $F$ using 78 FRBs of which 21 have been localized to host galaxies. Our analysis simultaneously fits for the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the DM distribution due to the FRB host galaxy. We find that the fluctuation parameter is degenerate with these parameters, most notably $H_0$, and use a uniform prior on $H_0$ to measure $\log_{10} F > -0.89$ at the $3\sigma$ confidence interval and a new constraint on the Hubble constant $H_0 = 85.3_{-8.1}^{+9.4} \, {\rm km \, s^{-1} \, Mpc^{-1}}$. Using a synthetic sample of 100 localized FRBs, the constraint on the fluctuation parameter is improved by a factor of $\sim 2$. Comparing our $F$ measurement to simulated predictions from cosmological simulation (IllustrisTNG), we find agreement between $0.4 < z < 2$. We perform an out-of-distribution analysis of ~12,000,000 semi-independent 128x128 pixel^2 SST regions, which we define as cutouts, from all nighttime granules in the MODIS R2019 Level-2 public dataset to discover the most complex or extreme phenomena at the ocean surface. Our algorithm (Ulmo) is a probabilistic autoencoder, which combines two deep learning modules: (1) an autoencoder, trained on ~150,000 random cutouts from 2010, to represent any input cutout with a 512-dimensional latent vector akin to a (non-linear) EOF analysis; and (2) a normalizing flow, which maps the autoencoder's latent space distribution onto an isotropic Gaussian manifold. From the latter, we calculate a log-likelihood value for each cutout and define outlier cutouts to be those in the lowest 0.1% of the distribution. These exhibit large gradients and patterns characteristic of a highly dynamic ocean surface, and many are located within larger complexes whose unique dynamics warrant future analysis. Without guidance, Ulmo consistently locates the outliers where the major western boundary currents separate from the continental margin. Buoyed by these results, we begin the process of exploring the fundamental patterns learned by Ulmo, identifying several compelling examples. Future work may find that algorithms like Ulmo hold significant potential/promise to learn and derive other, not-yet-identified behaviors in the ocean from the many archives of satellite-derived SST fields.
