Search

With wide-field phased array feed technology, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is ideally suited to search for seemingly rare radio transient sources. The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transient (CRAFT) Survey Science Project has developed instrumentation to continuously search for fast radio transients (duration $\lesssim$ 1 second) with ASKAP, with a particular focus on finding and localising Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Of particular interest are Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Since 2018, the CRAFT survey has been searching for FRBs and other fast transients by incoherently adding the intensities received by individual ASKAP antennas, and then correcting for the impact of frequency dispersion on these short-duration signals in the resultant incoherent sum (ICS) in real-time. This low-latency detection enables the triggering of voltage buffers, which facilitates the localisation of the transient source and the study spectro-polarimetric properties at high time resolution. Here we report the sample of 43 FRBs discovered in this CRAFT/ICS survey to date. This includes 22 FRBs that had not previously been reported: 16 FRBs localised by ASKAP to $\lesssim$ 1 arcsec and 6 FRBs localised to approximately 10 arcmin. Of the new arcsecond-localised FRBs, we have identified and characterised host galaxies (and measured redshifts) for 11. The median of all 30 measured host redshifts from the survey to date is z = 0.23. We summarise results from the searches, in particular those contributing to our understanding of the burst progenitors and emission mechanisms, and on the use of bursts as probes of intervening media. We have used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map CO(3-2) emission from a galaxy, DLA-B1228g, associated with the high-metallicity damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber at $z \approx 2.1929$ towards the QSO PKS B1228-113. At an angular resolution of $\approx0.32''\times0.24''$, DLA-B1228g shows extended CO(3-2) emission with a deconvolved size of $\approx0.78''\times0.18''$, i.e. a spatial extent of $\approx6.4$ kpc. We detect extended stellar emission from DLA-B1228g in a Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 F160W image, and find that H$\alpha$ emission is detected in a Very Large Telescope SINFONI image from only one side of the galaxy. While the clumpy nature of the F160W emission and the offset between the kinematic and physical centers of the CO(3-2) emission are consistent with a merger scenario, this appears unlikely due to the lack of strong H$\alpha$ emission, the symmetric double-peaked CO(3-2) line profile, the high molecular gas depletion timescale, and the similar velocity dispersions in the two halves of the CO(3-2) image. Kinematic modelling reveals that the CO(3-2) emission is consistent with arising from an axisymmetric rotating disk, with an exponential profile, a rotation velocity of $v_{rot}=328\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$, and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_{v}=62\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$. The high value of the ratio $v_{rot}/\sigma_v$, $\approx5.3$, implies that DLA-B1228g is a rotation-dominated cold disk galaxy, the second case of a high-$z$ HI-absorption-selected galaxy identified with a cold rotating disk. We obtain a dynamical mass of $M_{dyn}= (1.5\pm0.1)\times10^{11}~M_\odot$, similar to the molecular gas mass of $\approx10^{11} M_\odot$ inferred from earlier CO(1-0) studies; this implies that the galaxy is baryon-dominated in its inner regions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. Localisation of fast radio bursts (FRBs) to arcsecond and sub-arcsecond precision maximizes their potential as cosmological probes. To that end, FRB detection instruments are deploying triggered complex-voltage capture systems to localize FRBs, identify their host galaxy and measure a redshift. Here, we report the discovery and localisation of two FRBs (20220717A and 20220905A) that were captured by the transient buffer system deployed by the MeerTRAP instrument at the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. We were able to localize the FRBs to a precision of $\sim$1 arc-second that allowed us to unambiguously identify the host galaxy for FRB 20220717A (posterior probability$\sim$0.97). FRB 20220905A lies in a crowded region of the sky with a tentative identification of a host galaxy but the faintness and the difficulty in obtaining an optical spectrum preclude a conclusive association. The bursts show low linear polarization fractions (10--17$\%$) that conform to the large diversity in the polarization fraction observed in apparently non-repeating FRBs akin to single pulses from neutron stars. We also show that the host galaxy of FRB 20220717A contributes roughly 15$\%$ of the total dispersion measure (DM), indicating that it is located in a plasma-rich part of the host galaxy which can explain the large rotation measure. We present analysis of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of 67 [OIII]-selected star-forming galaxies at a redshift range of $z=1.99 - 2.32$ ($z_{\text{med}} = 2.16$) using \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} Wide Field Camera 3 grism spectroscopy from the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution (QSAGE) survey. Metallicities were determined using empirical gas-phase metallicity calibrations based on the strong emission lines [OII]3727,3729, [OIII]4959,5007 and H$\beta$. Star-forming galaxies were identified, and distinguished from active-galactic nuclei, via Mass-Excitation diagrams. Using $z\sim0$ metallicity calibrations, we observe a negative offset in the $z=2.2$ MZR of $\approx -0.51$ dex in metallicity when compared to locally derived relationships, in agreement with previous literature analysis. A similar offset of $\approx -0.46$ dex in metallicity is found when using empirical metallicity calibrations that are suitable out to $z\sim5$, though our $z=2.2$ MZR, in this case, has a shallower slope. We find agreement between our MZR and those predicted from various galaxy evolution models and simulations. Additionally, we explore the extended fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) which includes an additional dependence on star formation rate (SFR). Our results consistently support the existence of the FMR, as well as revealing an offset of $0.28\pm0.04$ dex in metallicity compared to locally-derived relationships, consistent with previous studies at similar redshifts. We interpret the negative correlation with SFR at fixed mass, inferred from an FMR existing for our sample, as being caused by the efficient accretion of metal-poor gas fuelling SFR at cosmic noon., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We present the first X-ray census of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies to conduct the deepest search for AGN and X-ray counterparts to date. Our sample includes seven well-localized FRBs with unambiguous host associations and existing deep Chandra observations, including two events for which we present new observations. We find evidence for AGN in two FRB host galaxies based on the presence of X-ray emission coincident with their centers, including the detection of a luminous ($L_X \approx 5 \times 10^{42} \ \rm erg \ s^{-1}$) X-ray source at the nucleus of FRB20190608B's host, for which we infer an SMBH mass of $\rm M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{8} \ M_{\odot}$ and an Eddington ratio $L_{\rm bol}/ L_{\rm Edd} \approx 0.02$, characteristic of geometrically thin disks in Seyfert galaxies. We also report nebular emission line fluxes for 24 highly secure FRB hosts (including 10 hosts for the first time), and assess their placement on a BPT diagram, finding that FRB hosts trace the underlying galaxy population. We further find that the hosts of repeating FRBs are not confined to the star-forming locus, contrary to previous findings. Finally, we place constraints on associated X-ray counterparts to FRBs in the context of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), and find that existing X-ray limits for FRBs rule out ULXs brighter than $L_X \gtrsim 10^{40} \ \rm erg \ s^{-1}$. Leveraging the CHIME/FRB catalog and existing ULX catalogs, we search for spatially coincident ULX-FRB pairs. We identify two ULX in the galaxy NGC 2633 that are spatially coincident with the repeating FRB20180908B and for which the DM-inferred redshift is comparable to the distance of the galaxy, assuming a $\rm DM_{host}$ contribution of $150 \ \rm pc \ cm^{-3}$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; submitted to ApJ

We report on the commensal ASKAP detection of a fast radio burst (FRB), FRB20211127I, and the detection of neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in the FRB host galaxy, WALLABYJ131913-185018 (hereafter W13-18). This collaboration between the CRAFT and WALLABY survey teams marks the fifth, and most distant, FRB host galaxy detected in HI, not including the Milky Way. We find that W13-18 has a HI mass of $M_{\rm HI}$ = 6.5 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, a HI-to-stellar mass ratio of 2.17, and coincides with a continuum radio source of flux density at 1.4 GHz of 1.3 mJy. The HI global spectrum of W13-18 appears to be asymmetric, albeit the HI observation has a low S/N, and the galaxy itself appears modestly undisturbed. These properties are compared to the early literature of HI emission detected in other FRB hosts to date, where either the HI global spectra were strongly asymmetric, or there were clearly disrupted HI intensity map distributions. W13-18 lacks sufficient S/N to determine whether it is significantly less asymmetric in its HI distribution than previous examples of FRB host galaxies. However, there are no strong signs of a major interaction in the HI or optical image of the host galaxy that would stimulate a burst of star formation and hence the production of putative FRB progenitors related to massive stars and their compact remnants., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We present a sample of well-localised Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) discovered by the MeerTRAP project at the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. We discovered the three FRBs in single coherent tied-array beams and localised them to an area of ~1 arcmin$^2$. We investigate their burst properties, scattering, repetition rates, and localisations in a multi-wavelength context. FRB 20201211A shows hints of scatter broadening but is otherwise consistent with instrumental dispersion smearing. For FRB 20210202D, we discovered a faint post-cursor burst separated by ~200 ms, suggesting a distinct burst component or a repeat pulse. We attempt to associate the FRBs with host galaxy candidates. For FRB 20210408H, we tentatively (0.35 - 0.53 probability) identify a compatible host at a redshift ~0.5. Additionally, we analyse the MeerTRAP survey properties, such as the survey coverage, fluence completeness, and their implications for the FRB population. Based on the entire sample of 11 MeerTRAP FRBs discovered by the end of 2021, we estimate the FRB all-sky rates and their scaling with the fluence threshold. The inferred FRB all-sky rates at 1.28 GHz are $8.2_{-4.6}^{+8.0}$ and $2.1_{-1.1}^{+1.8} \times 10^3$ sky$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$ above 0.66 and 3.44 Jy ms for the coherent and incoherent surveys, respectively. The scaling between the MeerTRAP rates is flatter than at higher fluences at the 1.4-$\sigma$ level. There seems to be a deficit of low-fluence FRBs, suggesting a break or turn-over in the rate versus fluence relation below 2 Jy ms. We speculate on cosmological or progenitor-intrinsic origins. We constrain the Hubble constant H$_0$ using Fast Radio Burst (FRB) observations from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and Murriyang (Parkes) radio telescopes. We use the redshift-dispersion measure (`Macquart') relationship, accounting for the intrinsic luminosity function, cosmological gas distribution, population evolution, host galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure (DM$_{\rm host}$), and observational biases due to burst duration and telescope beamshape. Using an updated sample of 16 ASKAP FRBs detected by the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) Survey and localised to their host galaxies, and 60 unlocalised FRBs from Parkes and ASKAP, our best-fitting value of H$_0$ is calculated to be $73_{-8}^{+12}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Uncertainties in FRB energetics and DM$_{\rm host}$ produce larger uncertainties in the inferred value of H$_0$ compared to previous FRB-based estimates. Using a prior on H$_0$ covering the 67--74 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ range, we estimate a median DM$_{\rm host} = 186_{-48}^{+59}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, exceeding previous estimates. We confirm that the FRB population evolves with redshift similarly to the star-formation rate. We use a Schechter luminosity function to constrain the maximum FRB energy to be $\log_{10} E_{\rm max}=41.26_{-0.22}^{+0.27}$ erg assuming a characteristic FRB emission bandwidth of 1 GHz at 1.3 GHz, and the cumulative luminosity index to be $\gamma=-0.95_{-0.15}^{+0.18}$. We demonstrate with a sample of 100 mock FRBs that H$_0$ can be measured with an uncertainty of $\pm 2.5$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, demonstrating the potential for clarifying the Hubble tension with an upgraded ASKAP FRB search system. We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of seven compact low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z,in the range 0.3161-0.4276, with various O3Mg2=[OIII]5007/MgII 2796+2803 and Mg2=MgII 2796/MgII 2803 emission-line ratios. We aim to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on the characteristics of MgII emission together with the dependences on other indirect indicators of escaping ionizing radiation. LyC emission with escape fractions fesc(LyC)=3.1-4.6 per cent is detected in four galaxies, whereas only 1sigma upper limits of fesc(LyC) in the remaining three galaxies were derived. A strong narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks separated by Vsep~298-592 km/s was observed in four galaxies with detected LyC emission and very weak Ly-alpha emission is observed in galaxies with LyC non-detections. Our new data confirm the tight anti-correlation between fesc(LyC) and Vsep found for previous low-redshift galaxy samples. Vsep remains the best indirect indicator of LyC leakage among all considered indicators. It is found that escaping LyC emission is detected predominantly in galaxies with Mg2>1.3. A tendency of an increase of fesc(LyC) with increasing of both the O3Mg2 and Mg2 is possibly present. While emission-selected galaxy surveys are biased towards the most luminous part of the galaxy population, absorption selection is a potentially unbiased galaxy selection technique with respect to luminosity. However, the physical properties of absorption-selected galaxies are not well characterised. Here we study the excitation conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption-selected galaxies. We present a study of the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) in four high-metallicity absorption-selected galaxies with previously reported CO detections at intermediate ($z \sim 0.7$) and high ($z \sim 2$) redshifts. We find further evidence for a wide variety of ISM conditions in these galaxies. Two out of the four galaxies show CO SLEDs consistent with that of the Milky Way inner disk. Interestingly, one of these galaxies is at $z \sim 2$ and has a CO SLED below that of main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts. The other two galaxies at $z>2$ show more excited ISM conditions, with one of them showing thermal excitation of the mid-$J$ (J$=3, 4$) levels, similar to that seen in two massive main-sequence galaxies at these redshifts. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are fascinating events due to their panchromatic nature. We study optical plateaus in GRB afterglows via an extended search into archival data. We comprehensively analyze all published GRBs with known redshifts and optical plateaus observed by many ground-based telescopes (e.g., Subaru Telescope, RATIR) around the world and several space-based observatories such as the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We fit 500 optical light curves (LCs), showing the existence of the plateau in 179 cases. This sample is 75% larger than the previous one (arXiv:2105.10717), and it is the largest compilation so far of optical plateaus. We discover the 3D fundamental plane relation at optical wavelengths using this sample. This correlation is between the rest-frame time at the end of the plateau emission, $T^{*}_{\rm opt}$, its optical luminosity, $L_{\rm opt}$, and the peak in the optical prompt emission, $L_{\rm peak, opt}$, thus resembling the three-dimensional (3D) X-ray fundamental plane relation (arXiv:1604.06840). We correct our sample for redshift evolution and selection effects, discovering that this correlation is indeed intrinsic to GRB physics. We investigate the rest-frame end time distributions in X-rays and optical ($T^{*}_{\rm opt}$, $T^{*}_{\rm X}$), and conclude that the plateau is achromatic only when selection biases are not considered. We also investigate if the 3D optical correlation may be a new discriminant between optical GRB classes and find that there is no significant separation between the classes compared to the Gold sample plane after correcting for evolution., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. We present optical and near-infrared photometric observations of GRB 191016 with the COATLI, DDOTI and RATIR ground-based telescopes over the first three nights. We present the temporal evolution of the optical afterglow and describe 5 different stages that were not completely characterized in previous works, mainly due to scarcity of data points to accurately fit the different components of the optical emission. After the end of the prompt gamma-ray emission, we observed the afterglow rise slowly in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths and peak at around T+1450s in all filters. This was followed by an early decay, a clear plateau from T+5000s to T+11000s, and then a regular late decay. We also present evidence of the jet break at later times, with a temporal index in good agreement with the temporal slope obtained from X-ray observations. Although many of the features observed in the optical light curves of GRBs are usually well explained by a reverse shock (RS) or forward shock(FS), the shallowness of the optical rise and enhanced peak emission in the GRB191016A afterglow is not well-fitted by only a FS or a RS. We propose a theoretical model which considers both of these components and combines an evolving FS with a later embedded RS and a subsequent late energy injection from the central engine activity. We combine 126 new galaxy-O VI absorber pairs from the CGM$^2$ survey with 123 pairs drawn from the literature to examine the simultaneous dependence of the column density of O VI absorbers ($N_{\rm O VI}$) on galaxy stellar mass, star formation rate, and impact parameter. The combined sample consists of 249 galaxy-O VI absorber pairs covering $z=0$-$0.6$, with host galaxy stellar masses $M^*=10^{7.8}$-$10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ and galaxy-absorber impact parameters $R_\perp=0$-$400$ proper kiloparsecs. In this work, we focus on the variation of $N_{\rm O VI}$ with galaxy mass and impact parameter among the star-forming galaxies in the sample. We find that the average $N_{\rm O VI}$ within one virial radius of a star-forming galaxy is greatest for star-forming galaxies with $M^*=10^{9.2}$-$10^{10}$ $M_\odot$. Star-forming galaxies with $M^*$ between $10^{8}$ and $10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ can explain most O VI systems with column densities greater than 10$^{13.5}$ cm$^{-2}$. 60% of the O VI mass associated with a star-forming galaxy is found within one virial radius and 35% is found between one and two virial radii. In general, we find that some departure from hydrostatic equilibrium in the CGM is necessary to reproduce the observed O VI amount, galaxy mass dependence, and extent. We report a Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) search for redshifted CO(1-0) or CO(2-1) emission, and a Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera~3 (HST-WFC3) search for rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV) stellar emission, from seven HI-selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity ([M/H]~$\geq -1.3$) damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z\approx 4$. The galaxies were earlier identified by ALMA imaging of their [CII]~158$\mu$m emission. We also used the JVLA to search for CO(2-1) emission from the field of a low-metallicity ([M/H]~$=-2.47$) DLA at $z\approx 4.8$. No statistically significant CO emission is detected from any of the galaxies, yielding upper limits of $M_{mol}<(7.4 - 17.9)\times 10^{10}\times (\alpha_{CO}/4.36) M_\odot$ on their molecular gas mass. We detect rest-frame NUV emission from four of the seven [CII]~158$\mu$m-emitting galaxies, the first detections of the stellar continuum from HI-selected galaxies at $z\gtrsim 4$. The HST-WFC3 images yield typical sizes of the stellar continua of $\approx 2-4$~kpc and inferred dust-unobscured star-formation rates (SFRs) of $\approx 5.0-17.5 M_\odot$/yr, consistent with, or slightly lower than, the total SFRs estimated from the far-infrared (FIR) luminosity. We further stacked the CO(2-1) emission signals of six [CII]~158$\mu$m-emitting galaxies in the image plane. Our non-detection of CO(2-1) emission in the stacked image yields the limit $M_{mol}<4.1 \times 10^{10}\times (\alpha_{CO}/4.36) M_\odot$ on the average molecular gas mass of the six galaxies. Our molecular gas mass estimates and NUV SFR estimates in HI-selected galaxies at $z\approx 4$ are consistent with those of main-sequence galaxies with similar [CII]~158$\mu$m and FIR luminosities at similar redshifts. However, the NUV emission in the HI-selected galaxies appears more extended than that in main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are extremely energetic pulses of millisecond duration and unknown origin. In order to understand the phenomenon that emits these pulses, targeted and untargeted searches have been performed for multi-wavelength counterparts, including the optical. The objective of this work is to search for optical transients at the position of 8 well-localized FRBs, after the arrival of the burst on different time-scales (typically at one day, several months, and one year after FRB detection) in order to compare with known transient optical light curves. We used the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT), which allows us to promptly take images owing to its network of twenty-three telescopes working around the world. We used a template subtraction technique on all the images we collected at different epochs. We have divided the subtractions into two groups, in one group we use the image of the last epoch as a template and in the other group we use the image of the first epoch as a template. We have searched for bright optical transients at the localizations of the FRBs (<1 arcsec) in the template subtracted images. We have found no optical transients, so we have set limiting magnitudes of optical counterparts. Typical limiting magnitudes in apparent (absolute) magnitudes for our LCOGT data are ~22 (-19) mag in the r-band. We have compared our limiting magnitudes with light curves of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), type Ia supernovae (SNe), supernovae associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRB SNe), a kilonova, and tidal disruption events (TDEs). We rule out that FRBs are associated with SLSN at a confidence of ~99.9%. We can also rule out the brightest sub-types of type Ia SNe, GRB SNe and TDEs (under some conditions) at similar confidence, though we cannot exclude scenarios where FRBs are associated with the faintest sub-type of each of these transient classes., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysics on 27 June, 2021. 8 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

We develop a sophisticated model of FRB observations, accounting for the intrinsic cosmological gas distribution and host galaxy contributions, and give the most detailed account yet of observational biases due to burst width, dispersion measure, and the exact telescope beamshape. Our results offer a significant increase in both accuracy and precision beyond those previously obtained. Using results from ASKAP and Parkes, we present our best-fit FRB population parameters in a companion paper. Here, we consider in detail the expected and fitted distributions in redshift, dispersion measure, and signal-to-noise. We estimate that the unlocalised ASKAP FRBs arise from $z<0.5$, with between a third and a half within $z<0.1$. Our predicted source-counts (''logN-logS'') distribution confirms previous indications of a steepening index near the Parkes detection threshold of $1$ Jy ms. We find no evidence for a minimum FRB energy, and rule out $E_{\rm min} > 10^{39.0}$ erg at 90% C.L. Importantly, we find that above a certain DM, observational biases cause the Macquart (DM-z) relation to become inverted, implying that the highest-DM events detected in the unlocalised Parkes and ASKAP samples are unlikely to be the most distant. More localized FRBs will be required to quantitatively estimate this effect, though its cause is a well-understood observational bias. Works assuming a 1-1 DM-z relation may therefore derive erroneous results. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extremely powerful sources of radio waves observed at cosmological distances. We use a sophisticated model of FRB observations -- presented in detail in a companion paper -- to fit FRB population parameters using large samples of FRBs detected by ASKAP and Parkes, including seven sources with confirmed host galaxies. Our fitted parameters demonstrate that the FRB population evolves with redshift in a manner consistent with, or faster than, the star-formation rate (SFR), ruling out a non-evolving population at 99.9\% C.L. Our estimated maximum FRB energy is $\log_{10} E_{\rm max} [{\rm erg}] = 41.84_{-0.18}^{+0.49}$ (68\% C.L.) assuming a 1\,GHz emission bandwidth, with slope of the cumulative luminosity distribution $\gamma=-1.16_{-0.12}^{+0.11}$. We find a log-mean host DM contribution of $145_{-60}^{+64}$\,pc\,cm$^{-3}$ on top of a typical local (ISM and halo) contribution of $\sim80$\,pc\,cm$^{-3}$, which is higher than most literature values. These results are consistent with the model of FRBs arising as the high-energy limit of magnetar bursts, but allow for FRB progenitors that evolve faster than the SFR., Comment: 8 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures. Early star-forming galaxies produced copious ionizing photons. A fraction of these photons escaped gas within galaxies to reionize the entire Universe. This escape fraction is crucial for determining how the Universe became reionized, but the neutral intergalactic medium precludes direct measurement of the escape fraction at high-redshifts. Indirect estimates of the escape fraction must describe how the Universe was reionized. Here, we present new Keck Cosmic Web Imager spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the resonant Mg II 2800 doublet from a redshift 0.36 galaxy, J1503+3644, with a previously observed escape fraction of 6%. The Mg II emission has a similar spatial extent as the stellar continuum, and each of the Mg II doublet lines are well-fit by single Gaussians. The Mg II is optically thin. The intrinsic flux ratio of the red and blue Mg II emission line doublet, $R = F_{2796}/F_{2803}$, is set by atomic physics to be two, but Mg$^+$ gas along the line of sight decreases $R$ proportional to the Mg II optical depth. Combined with the metallicity, $R$ estimates the neutral gas column density. The observed $R$ ranges across the galaxy from 0.8-2.7, implying a factor of 2 spatial variation of the relative escape fraction. All of the ionizing photons that escape J1503+3644 pass through regions of high $R$. We combine the Mg II emission and dust attenuation to accurately estimate the absolute escape fractions for ten local Lyman Continuum emitting galaxies and suggest that Mg II can predict escape fraction within the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: Updated a reference

We present the discovery and subarcsecond localization of a new Fast Radio Burst with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and realfast search system. The FRB was discovered on 2019 June 14 with a dispersion measure of 959 pc/cm3. This is the highest DM of any localized FRB and its measured burst fluence of 0.6 Jy ms is less than nearly all other FRBs. The source is not detected to repeat in 15 hours of VLA observing and 153 hours of CHIME/FRB observing. We describe a suite of statistical and data quality tests we used to verify the significance of the event and its localization precision. Follow-up optical/infrared photometry with Keck and Gemini associate the FRB to a pair of galaxies with $\rm{r}\sim23$ mag. The false-alarm rate for radio transients of this significance that are associated with a host galaxy is roughly $3\times10^{-4}\ \rm{hr}^{-1}$. The two putative host galaxies have similar photometric redshifts of $z_{\rm{phot}}\sim0.6$, but different colors and stellar masses. Comparing the host distance to that implied by the dispersion measure suggests a modest (~ 50 pc/cm3) electron column density associated with the FRB environment or host galaxy/galaxies., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals (ApJ) and revised for referee comments

We demonstrate that the UV brightest quasars at z=1-2 live in overdense environments. This is based on an analysis of deep Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy of the galaxies along the lines-of-sight to UV luminous quasars in the redshift range z=1-2. This constitutes some of the deepest grism spectroscopy performed by WFC3, with 4 roll angles spread over a year of observations to mitigate the effect of overlapping spectra. Of the 12 quasar fields studied, 8 display evidence for a galaxy overdensity at the redshift of the quasar. One of the overdensities, PG0117+213 at z=1.50, has potentially 36 spectroscopically confirmed members, consisting of 19 with secure redshifts and 17 with single-line redshifts, within a cylinder of radius ~700 kpc. Its halo mass is estimated to be log (M/Msol)=14.7. This demonstrates that spectroscopic and narrow-band observations around distant UV bright quasars may be an excellent route for discovering protoclusters. Our findings agree with previous hints from statistical observations of the quasar population and theoretical works, as feedback regulated black hole growth predicts a correlation between quasar luminosity and halo mass. More than three quarters of the baryonic content of the Universe resides in a highly diffuse state that is difficult to observe, with only a small fraction directly observed in galaxies and galaxy clusters. Censuses of the nearby Universe have used absorption line spectroscopy to observe these invisible baryons, but these measurements rely on large and uncertain corrections and are insensitive to the majority of the volume, and likely mass. Specifically, quasar spectroscopy is sensitive either to only the very trace amounts of Hydrogen that exists in the atomic state, or highly ionized and enriched gas in denser regions near galaxies. Sunyaev-Zel'dovich analyses provide evidence of some of the gas in filamentary structures and studies of X-ray emission are most sensitive to gas near galaxy clusters. Here we report the direct measurement of the baryon content of the Universe using the dispersion of a sample of localized fast radio bursts (FRBs), thus utilizing an effect that measures the electron column density along each sight line and accounts for every ionised baryon. We augment the sample of published arcsecond-localized FRBs with a further four new localizations to host galaxies which have measured redshifts of 0.291, 0.118, 0.378 and 0.522, completing a sample sufficiently large to account for dispersion variations along the line of sight and in the host galaxy environment to derive a cosmic baryon density of $\Omega_{b} = 0.051_{-0.025}^{+0.021} \, h_{70}^{-1}$ (95% confidence). We report on the discovery of a peculiar Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasar identified in our Gaia-assisted survey of red quasars. The systemic redshift of this quasar was difficult to establish due to the absence of conspicuous emission lines. Based on deep and broad BAL troughs (at least SiIV, CIV, and AlIII), a redshift of z=2.41 was established under the assumption that the systemic redshift can be inferred from the red edge of the BAL troughs. However, we observe a weak and spatially-extended emission line at 4450 AA most likely due to Lyman-alpha emission, which implies a systemic redshift of z=2.66 if correctly identified. There is also evidence for the onset of Lyman-alpha forest absorption bluewards of 4450 AA and evidence for H-alpha emission in the K-band consistent with a systemic redshift of z=2.66. If this redshift is correct, the quasar is an extreme example of a detached low-ionisation BAL quasar. The BAL lines must originate from material moving with very large velocities ranging from 22000 to 40000 km/s. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a systemic-redshift measurement based on extended Lyman-$\alpha$ emission for a BAL quasar, a method that should also be useful in cases of sufficiently distant BL Lac quasars without systemic-redshift information., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. High-multiplex and deep spectroscopic follow-up of upcoming panoramic deep-imaging surveys like LSST, Euclid, and WFIRST is a widely recognized and increasingly urgent necessity. No current or planned facility at a U.S. observatory meets the sensitivity, multiplex, and rapid-response time needed to exploit these future datasets. FOBOS, the Fiber-Optic Broadband Optical Spectrograph, is a near-term fiber-based facility that addresses these spectroscopic needs by optimizing depth over area and exploiting the aperture advantage of the existing 10m Keck II Telescope. The result is an instrument with a uniquely blue-sensitive wavelength range (0.31-1.0 um) at R~3500, high-multiplex (1800 fibers), and a factor 1.7 greater survey speed and order-of-magnitude greater sampling density than Subaru's Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS). In the era of panoramic deep imaging, FOBOS will excel at building the deep, spectroscopic reference data sets needed to interpret vast imaging data. At the same time, its flexible focal plane, including a mode with 25 deployable integral-field units (IFUs) across a 20 arcmin diameter field, enables an expansive range of scientific investigations. Its key programmatic areas include (1) nested stellar-parameter training sets that enable studies of the Milky Way and M31 halo sub-structure, as well as local group dwarf galaxies, (2) a comprehensive picture of galaxy formation thanks to detailed mapping of the baryonic environment at z~2 and statistical linking of evolving populations to the present day, and (3) dramatic enhancements in cosmological constraints via precise photometric redshifts and determined redshift distributions. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are brief radio emissions from distant astronomical sources. Some are known to repeat, but most are single bursts. Non-repeating FRB observations have had insufficient positional accuracy to localize them to an individual host galaxy. We report the interferometric localization of the single pulse FRB 180924 to a position 4 kpc from the center of a luminous galaxy at redshift 0.3214. The burst has not been observed to repeat. The properties of the burst and its host are markedly different from the only other accurately localized FRB source. The integrated electron column density along the line of sight closely matches models of the intergalactic medium, indicating that some FRBs are clean probes of the baryonic component of the cosmic web., Comment: Published online in Science 27 June 2019

We address the spatial scale, ionization structure, mass and metal content of gas at the Milky Way disk-halo interface detected as absorption in the foreground of seven closely-spaced, high-latitude halo blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs) with heights z = 3 - 14 kpc. We detect transitions that trace multiple ionization states (e.g. CaII, FeII, SiIV, CIV) with column densities that remain constant with height from the disk, indicating that the gas most likely lies within z < 3.4 kpc. The intermediate ionization state gas traced by CIV and SiIV is strongly correlated over the full range of transverse separations probed by our sightlines, indicating large, coherent structures greater than 1 kpc in size. The low ionization state material traced by CaII and FeII does not exhibit a correlation with either N$_{\rm HI}$ or transverse separation, implying cloudlets or clumpiness on scales less than 10 pc. We find that the observed ratio log(N_SiIV/ N_CIV), with a median value of -0.69+/-0.04, is sensitive to the total carbon content of the ionized gas under the assumption of either photoionization or collisional ionization. The only self-consistent solution for photoionized gas requires that Si be depleted onto dust by 0.35 dex relative to the solar Si/C ratio, similar to the level of Si depletion in DLAs and in the Milky Way ISM. The allowed range of values for the areal mass infall rate of warm, ionized gas at the disk-halo interface is 0.0003 < dM_gas / dtdA [M_sun kpc^-2 yr^-] < 0.006. Our data support a physical scenario in which the Milky Way is fed by complex, multiphase processes at its disk-halo interface that involve kpc-scale ionized envelopes or streams containing pc-scale, cool clumps., Comment: 12 figures, 4 tables, Accepted to ApJ. We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012-2015, observed by several multi-wavelength facilities including the GTC 10.4m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL/SPI/ACS, Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1-10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constraints the pre jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new as well as previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for 8 other sGRBs we are able to; place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy or any underlying kilonova emission. In the SSA22 field which exhibits a large-scale proto-cluster at $z=3.1$, we carried out a spectroscopic survey for Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with the VLT/VIMOS and identified 78 confident LBGs at $z=2.5$--4. We stacked their spectra in the observer's frame by using a sophisticated method. Analyzing the composite spectrum, we have revealed that the large-scale proto-cluster at $z=3.1$ has a strong HI absorption dip of rest-frame equivalent width of $-1.7$ A. Another strong absorption dip found at $z=3.28$ is associated with a modestly high-density LBG peak, similar to that at $z=3.1$. We have also detected an HI transparency peak at $z=2.98$ in the composite spectrum, coincident with a void in the LBG distribution. In this paper, we also investigated the relation between LBGs, HI gas and AGNs at $z=3$--4 in the SSA22 field. Two AGNs at $z=3.353$ and 3.801 are, respectively, associated with the LBG concentration of an overdensity factor $\delta_{\rm LBG}\simeq2$ in the present statistics. Another structure at $z=3.453$ is remarkable: 20 comoving Mpc scale dense HI gas which is not associated with any apparent LBG overdensity but involving a pair of AGNs. Such structure may be a new type of the AGN-matter correlation. If the inhomogeneous structures over a comoving Gpc scale found in this paper are confirmed with sufficient statistics in the future, the SSA22 field will become a key region to test the standard cold dark matter structure formation scenario., Comment: MNRAS accepted, 24 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables

In the hierarchical model of structure formation, giant elliptical galaxies form through merging processes within the highest density peaks known as protoclusters. While high-redshift radio galaxies usually pinpoint the location of these environments, we have recently discovered at z~2-3 three Enormous (>200 kpc) Lyman-Alpha Nebulae (ELANe) that host multiple AGN and that are surrounded by overdensities of Lyman-alpha Emitters (LAE). These regions are prime candidates of massive protoclusters in the early stages of assembly. To characterize the star-forming activity within these rare structures - both on ELAN and protocluster scales - we have initiated an observational campaign with the JCMT and the APEX telescopes. In this paper we report on sensitive SCUBA-2/JCMT 850 and 450 $\mu$m observations of a 128 arcmin$^2$ field comprising the ELAN MAMMOTH-1, together with the peak of the hosting BOSS1441 LAE overdensity at z=2.32. These observations unveil $4.0\pm1.3$ times higher source counts at 850 $\mu$m with respect to blank fields, likely confirming the presence of an overdensity also in obscured tracers. We find a strong detection at 850 $\mu$m associated with the continuum source embedded within the ELAN MAMMOTH-1, which - together with the available data from the literature - allow us to constrain the spectral energy distribution of this source to be of an ULIRG with a far-infrared luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR}^{\rm SF}=2.4^{+7.4}_{-2.1}\times10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$, and hosting an obscured AGN. Such a source is thus able to power the hard photoionization plus outflow scenario depicted in Cai et al. (2017b) to explain the extended Lyman-alpha, HeII$\lambda1640$ and CIV$\lambda1549$ emission, and their kinematics. We present the first results from a study of OVI absorption around galaxies at $z<1.44$ using data from a near-infrared grism spectroscopic Hubble Space Telescope Large Program, the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution (QSAGE) survey. QSAGE is the first grism galaxy survey to focus on the circumgalactic medium at $z\sim1$, providing a blind survey of the galaxy population. Using the first of 12 fields, we provide details of the reduction methods, in particular the handling of the deep grism data which uses multiple position angles to minimise the effects of contamination from overlapping traces. The resulting galaxy sample is H$\alpha$ flux limited ($f({\rm H\alpha}) > 2\times10^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$) at 0.680.68, we find 5 OVI absorption systems along the line of sight with identified galaxies lying at impact parameters of $b\approx100-350$ kpc (proper), whilst we find a further 13 galaxies with no significant associated OVI absorption (i.e. $N({\rm OVI})<10^{13.5-14}$ cm$^{-2}$) in the same impact parameter and redshift range. We find a large scatter in the stellar mass and star-formation rates of the closest galaxies with associated OVI. Whilst one of the OVI absorber systems is found to be associated with a low mass galaxy group at $z\approx1.08$, we infer that the detected OVI absorbers typically lie in the proximity of dark matter halos of masses $10^{11.5} {\rm M_\odot}\lesssim M_{\rm halo}\lesssim10^{12} {\rm M_\odot}$., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to MNRAS 14th Sept 2018

Quasars whose broad emission lines show temporal, bulk radial velocity (RV) shifts have been proposed as candidate sub-parsec (sub-pc), binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs). We identified a sample of 16 BSBH candidates based on two-epoch spectroscopy among 52 quasars with significant RV shifts over a few rest-frame years. The candidates showed consistent velocity shifts independently measured from two broad lines (H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ or Mg${\rm \,II}$) without significant changes in the broad-line profiles. Here in the third paper of the series, we present further third- and fourth-epoch spectroscopy for 12 of the 16 candidates for continued RV tests, spanning $\sim$5--15 yr in the quasars' rest frames. Cross-correlation analysis of the broad H$\beta$ calibrated against [O${\rm\,III}]\,\lambda 5007$ suggests that 5 of the 12 quasars remain valid as BSBH candidates. They show broad H$\beta$ RV curves that are consistent with binary orbital motion without significant changes in the broad line profiles. Their broad H$\alpha$ (or Mg${\rm \,II}$) lines display RV shifts that are either consistent with or smaller than those seen in broad H$\beta$. The RV shifts can be explained by a $\sim$0.05--0.1 pc BSBH with an orbital period of $\sim$40--130 yr, assuming a mass ratio of 0.5--2 and a circular orbit. However, the parameters are not well constrained given the few epochs that sample only a small portion of the hypothesized binary orbital cycle. The apparent occurrence rate of sub-pc BSBHs is $\lesssim$13$\pm$5% among all SDSS quasars, with no significant difference in the subsets with and without single-epoch broad line velocity offsets. We present a study of cold gas absorption from a damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber (DLA) at redshift $z_{\rm abs}=1.946$ towards two lensed images of the quasar J144254.78+405535.5 at redshift $z_{\rm QSO} = 2.590$. The physical separation of the two lines of sight at the absorber redshift is $d_{\rm abs}=0.7$~kpc based on our lens model. We observe absorption lines from neutral carbon and H$_2$ along both lines of sight indicating that cold gas is present on scales larger than $d_{\rm abs}$. We measure column densities of HI to be $\log N(\rm H\,\i) = 20.27\pm0.02$ and $20.34\pm0.05$ and of H$_2$ to be $\log N(\rm H_2) = 19.7\pm0.1$ and $19.9\pm0.2$. The metallicity inferred from sulphur is consistent with Solar metallicity for both sightlines: $[{\rm S/H}]_A = 0.0\pm0.1$ and $[{\rm S/H}]_B = -0.1\pm0.1$. Based on the excitation of low rotational levels of H$_2$, we constrain the temperature of the cold gas phase to be $T=109\pm20$ and $T=89\pm25$ K for the two lines of sight. From the relative excitation of fine-structure levels of CI, we constrain the hydrogen volumetric densities in the range of $40-110$ cm$^{-3}$. Based on the ratio of observed column density and volumetric density, we infer the average individual `cloud' size along the line of sight to be $l\approx0.1$ pc. Using the transverse line-of-sight separation of 0.7 kpc together with the individual cloud size, we are able to put an upper limit to the volume filling factor of cold gas of $f_{\rm vol} < 0.2$ %. Nonetheless, the projected covering fraction of cold gas must be large (close to unity) over scales of a few kpc in order to explain the presence of cold gas in both lines of sight. Motivated by the recent discovery of rare Enormous Lyman-Alpha Nebulae (ELAN) around z~2 quasars, we have initiated a long-term observational campaign with the MUSE instrument to directly uncover the astrophysics of the gas around quasars. We present here the first 61 targets of our effort under the acronym QSO MUSEUM (Quasar Snapshot Observations with MUse: Search for Extended Ultraviolet eMission). These quasars have a median redshfit of z=3.17, absolute $i$ magnitude in the range $-29.67\leq M_i(z=2)\leq-27.03$, and different levels of radio-loudness. This sample unveils diverse specimens of Ly$\alpha$ nebulosities extending for tens of kiloparsecs around these quasars (on average out to a maximum projected distance of 80 kpc) above a surface brightness SB$>8.8\times10^{-19}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ ($2\sigma$). The bulk of the extended Ly$\alpha$ emission is within R<50 kpc, and is characterized by relatively quiescent kinematics, with average velocity dispersions of $\langle \sigma_{\rm Ly\alpha}\rangle < 400$~km~s$^{-1}$. Therefore, the motions within all these Ly$\alpha$ nebulosities have amplitudes consistent with gravitational motions expected in dark matter halos hosting quasars at these redshifts, possibly reflecting the complexity in propagating a fast wind on large scales. Our current data suggest a combination of photoionization and resonant scattering as powering mechanisms of the Ly$\alpha$ emission. We discover the first $z\sim3$ ELAN, which confirms a very low probability ($\sim1\%$) of occurrence of such extreme systems at these cosmic epochs. Finally, we discuss the redshift evolution currently seen in extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around radio-quiet quasars from $z\sim3$ to $z\sim2$, concluding that it is possibly linked to a decrease of cool gas mass within the quasars' CGM from $z\sim3$ to $z\sim2$, and thus to the balance of cool vs hot media., Comment: 48 pages, 3 page-long tables, 28 figures, 3 appendices. We investigate the NV absorption signal along the line of sight of background quasars, in order to test the robustness of the use of this ion as criterion to select intrinsic (i.e. physically related to the quasar host galaxy) narrow absorption lines (NALs). We build composite spectra from a sample of $\sim$ 1000 CIV absorbers, covering the redshift range 2.55 < z < 4.73, identified in 100 individual sight lines from the XQ-100 Legacy Survey. We detect a statistical significant NV absorption signal only within 5000 km s$^{-1}$ of the systemic redshift, z$\rm_{em}$. This absorption trough is $\sim$ 15$\sigma$ when only CIV systems with N(CIV) > 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ are included in the composite spectrum. This result confirms that NV offers an excellent statistical tool to identify intrinsic systems. We exploit the stacks of 11 different ions to show that the gas in proximity to a quasar exhibits a considerably different ionization state with respect to gas in the transverse direction and intervening gas at large velocity separations from the continuum source. Indeed, we find a dearth of cool gas, as traced by low-ionization species and in particular by MgII, in the proximity of the quasar. We compare our findings with the predictions given by a range of Cloudy ionization models and find that they can be naturally explained by ionization effects of the quasar., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. We study the components of cool and warm/hot gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of simulated galaxies and address the relative production of OVI by photoionization versus collisional ionization, as a function of halo mass, redshift, and distance from the galaxy halo center. This is done utilizing two different suites of zoom-in hydro-cosmological simulations, VELA (6 halos; $z>1$) and NIHAO (18 halos; to $z=0$), which provide a broad theoretical basis because they use different codes and physical recipes for star formation and feedback. In all halos studied in this work, we find that collisional ionization by thermal electrons dominates at high redshift, while photoionization of cool or warm gas by the metagalactic radiation takes over near $z\sim2$. In halos of $\sim 10^{12}M_{\odot}$ and above, collisions become important again at $z<0.5$, while photoionization remains significant down to $z=0$ for less massive halos. In halos with $M_{\textrm v}>3\times10^{11}~M_{\odot}$, at $z\sim 0$ most of the photoionized OVI is in a warm, not cool, gas phase ($T\lesssim 3\times 10^5$~K). We also find that collisions are dominant in the central regions of halos, while photoionization is more significant at the outskirts, around $R_{\textrm v}$, even in massive halos. This too may be explained by the presence of warm gas or, in lower mass halos, by cool gas inflows.

We report on the results of a search for CO(3-2) emission from the galaxy counterpart of a high-metallicity Damped Ly-alpha Absorber (DLA) at z=2.5832 towards the quasar Q0918+1636. We do not detect CO emission from the previously identified DLA galaxy counterpart. The limit we infer on M_gas / M_star is in the low end of the range found for DLA galaxies, but is still consistent with what is found for other star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. Instead we detect CO(3-2) emission from another intensely star-forming galaxy at an impact parameter of 117 kpc from the line-of-sight to the quasar and 131 km s^-1 redshifted relative to the velocity centroid of the DLA in the quasar spectrum. In the velocity profile of the low- and high-ionisation absorption lines of the DLA there is an absorption component consistent with the redshift of this CO-emitting galaxy. It is plausible that this component is physically associated with a strong outflow in the plane of the sky from the CO-emitting galaxy. If true, this would be further evidence, in addition to what is already known from studies of Lyman-break galaxies, that galactic outflows can be traced beyond 100 kpc from star-forming galaxies. The nature of absorption-selected galaxies and their connection to the general galaxy population have been open issues for more than three decades, with little information available on their gas properties. Here we show, using detections of carbon monoxide (CO) emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), that five of seven high-metallicity, absorption-selected galaxies at intermediate redshifts, $z \approx 0.5-0.8$, have large molecular gas masses, $M_{\rm Mol} \approx (0.6 - 8.2) \times 10^{10} \: {\rm M}_\odot$ and high molecular gas fractions ($f_{\rm Mol} \equiv \: M_{\rm Mol}/(M_\ast + M_{\rm Mol}) \approx 0.29-0.87)$. Their modest star formation rates (SFRs), $\approx (0.3-9.5) \: {\rm M}_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, then imply long gas depletion timescales, $\approx (3 - 120)$ Gyr. The high-metallicity absorption-selected galaxies at $z \approx 0.5-0.8$ appear distinct from populations of star-forming galaxies at both $z \approx 1.3-2.5$, during the peak of star formation activity in the Universe, and lower redshifts, $z \lesssim 0.05$. Their relatively low SFRs, despite the large molecular gas reservoirs, may indicate a transition in the nature of star formation at intermediate redshifts, $z \approx 0.7$., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Recently, Carnall et al. discovered two bright high redshift quasars using the combination of the VST ATLAS and WISE surveys. The technique involved using the 3-D colour plane i-z:z-W1:W1-W2 with the WISE W1 (3.4 micron) and W2 (4.5 micron) bands taking the place of the usual NIR J band to help decrease stellar dwarf contamination. Here we report on our continued search for 5.76 quasars, VST-ATLAS J158.6938-14.4211 at z=6.07 and J332.8017-32.1036 at z=6.32 with magnitudes of z_AB=19.4 and 19.7 mag respectively. J158.6938-14.4211 was confirmed by Keck LRIS observations and J332.8017-32.1036 was confirmed by ESO NTT EFOSC-2 observations. Here we present VLT X-shooter Visible and NIR spectra for the four ATLAS quasars. We have further independently rediscovered two z>5.7 quasars previously found by the VIKING/KiDS and PanSTARRS surveys. This means that in ATLAS we have now discovered a total of six quasars in our target 5.7

The Astropy project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly-needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy project is the core package Astropy, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we provide an overview of the organization of the Astropy project and summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 2.0. We then describe the project infrastructure designed to facilitate and support development for a broader ecosystem of inter-operable packages. We are undertaking an ALMA survey of molecular gas in galaxies selected for their strong HI absorption, so-called DLA/sub-DLA galaxies. Here we report CO(2-1) detection from a DLA galaxy at z = 0.716. We also present optical and near-infrared spectra of the galaxy revealing [OII], H{\alpha} and [NII] emission lines shifted by ~170 km/s relative to the DLA, and providing an oxygen abundance 3.2 times solar, similar to the absorption metallicity. We report low unobscured SFR ~1 Msun/yr given the large reservoir of molecular gas, and also modest obscured SFR=4.5(+4.4,-2.6) Msun/yr based on far-IR and sub-mm data. We determine mass components of the galaxy: log[M*/Msun] = 10.80(+0.07,-0.14), log[M mol-gas/Msun] = 10.37 +/-0.04, and log[M dust/Msun] = 8.45(+0.10,-0.30). Surprisingly, this HI absorption-selected galaxy has no equivalent objects in CO surveys of flux-selected samples. The galaxy falls off current scaling relations for the SFR to molecular gas mass and CO Tully-Fisher relation. Detailed comparison of kinematical components of the absorbing, ionized and molecular gas, combined with their spatial distribution, suggests that part of the CO gas is both kinematically and spatially de-coupled from the main galaxy. It is thus possible that a major star burst in the past could explain the wide CO profile as well as the low SFR. Support for this also comes from the SED favouring an instantaneous burst of age ~0.5 Gyr. The detection of GW170817 in both gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves heralds the age of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. On 17 August 2017 the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors observed GW170817, a strong signal from the merger of a binary neutron-star system. Less than 2 seconds after the merger, a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) was detected within a region of the sky consistent with the LIGO-Virgo-derived location of the gravitational-wave source. This sky region was subsequently observed by optical astronomy facilities, resulting in the identification of an optical transient signal within $\sim 10$ arcsec of the galaxy NGC 4993. These multi-messenger observations allow us to use GW170817 as a standard siren, the gravitational-wave analog of an astronomical standard candle, to measure the Hubble constant. This quantity, which represents the local expansion rate of the Universe, sets the overall scale of the Universe and is of fundamental importance to cosmology. Our measurement combines the distance to the source inferred purely from the gravitational-wave signal with the recession velocity inferred from measurements of the redshift using electromagnetic data. This approach does not require any form of cosmic "distance ladder;" the gravitational wave analysis can be used to estimate the luminosity distance out to cosmological scales directly, without the use of intermediate astronomical distance measurements. We determine the Hubble constant to be $70.0^{+12.0}_{-8.0} \, \mathrm{km} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ (maximum a posteriori and 68% credible interval). This is consistent with existing measurements, while being completely independent of them. On 2017 August 17, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo interferometer detected gravitational waves emanating from a binary neutron star merger, GW170817. Nearly simultaneously, the Fermi and INTEGRAL telescopes detected a gamma-ray transient, GRB 170817A. 10.9 hours after the gravitational wave trigger, we discovered a transient and fading optical source, Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), coincident with GW170817. SSS17a is located in NGC 4993, an S0 galaxy at a distance of 40 megaparsecs. On 2017 August 17, gravitational waves were detected from a binary neutron star merger, GW170817, along with a coincident short gamma-ray burst, GRB170817A. An optical transient source, Swope Supernova Survey 17a (SSS17a), was subsequently identified as the counterpart of this event. We present ultraviolet, optical and infrared light curves of SSS17a extending from 10.9 hours to 18 days post-merger. We constrain the radioactively-powered transient resulting from the ejection of neutron-rich material. The fast rise of the light curves, subsequent decay, and rapid color evolution are consistent with multiple ejecta components of differing lanthanide abundance. The late-time light curve indicates that SSS17a produced at least ~0.05 solar masses of heavy elements, demonstrating that neutron star mergers play a role in r-process nucleosynthesis in the Universe., Comment: Accepted to Science

On 2017 August 17, Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a) was discovered as the optical counterpart of the binary neutron star gravitational wave event GW170817. We report time-series spectroscopy of SSS17a from 11.75 hours until 8.5 days after merger. Over the first hour of observations the ejecta rapidly expanded and cooled. Applying blackbody fits to the spectra, we measure the photosphere cooling from $11,000^{+3400}_{-900}$ K to $9300^{+300}_{-300}$ K, and determine a photospheric velocity of roughly 30% of the speed of light. The spectra of SSS17a begin displaying broad features after 1.46 days, and evolve qualitatively over each subsequent day, with distinct blue (early-time) and red (late-time) components. The late-time component is consistent with theoretical models of r-process-enriched neutron star ejecta, whereas the blue component requires high velocity, lanthanide-free material., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Accepted to Science

We present an analysis of the host-galaxy environment of Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), the discovery of an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source, GW170817. SSS17a occurred 1.9 kpc (in projection; 10.2") from the nucleus of NGC 4993, an S0 galaxy at a distance of 40 Mpc. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pre-trigger image of NGC 4993, Magellan optical spectroscopy of the nucleus of NGC 4993 and the location of SSS17a, and broad-band UV through IR photometry of NGC 4993. The spectrum and broad-band spectral-energy distribution indicate that NGC 4993 has a stellar mass of log (M/M_solar) = 10.49^{+0.08}_{-0.20} and star formation rate of 0.003 M_solar/yr, and the progenitor system of SSS17a likely had an age of >2.8 Gyr. There is no counterpart at the position of SSS17a in the HST pre-trigger image, indicating that the progenitor system had an absolute magnitude M_V > -5.8 mag. We detect dust lanes extending out to almost the position of SSS17a and >100 likely globular clusters associated with NGC 4993. The offset of SSS17a is similar to many short gamma-ray burst offsets, and its progenitor system was likely bound to NGC 4993. The environment of SSS17a is consistent with an old progenitor system such as a binary neutron star system., Comment: ApJL in press

We reveal multiple components of an interacting galaxy system at $z\approx3.35$ through a detailed analysis of the exquisite high-resolution Keck/HIRES spectrum of the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB). Through Voigt-profile fitting of absorption lines from the Lyman-series, we constrain the neutral hydrogen column density to $N_{\mathrm{HI}} \leq 10^{18.35}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the densest of four distinct systems at the host redshift of GRB~080810, among the lowest $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ ever observed in a GRB host, despite the line of sight passing within a projected 5 kpc of the galaxy centres. By detailed analysis of the corresponding metal absorption lines, we derive chemical, ionic and kinematic properties of the individual absorbing systems, and thus build a picture of the host as a whole. Striking differences between the systems imply that the line of sight passes through several phases of gas: the star-forming regions of the GRB host; enriched material in the form of a galactic outflow; the hot and ionised halo of a second, interacting galaxy falling towards the host at a line-of-sight velocity of 700 km s$^{-1}$; and a cool, metal-poor cloud which may represent one of the best candidates yet for the inflow of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures. We observed the afterglow of GRB 130427A with the RATIR instrument on the 1.5-m Harold L. Johnson telescope of the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional on Sierra San Pedro M\'artir. Our homogenous $griZYJH$ photometry extends from the night of burst to three years later. We fit a model for the afterglow. There is a significant positive residual which matches the behavior of SN 1998bw in the $griZ$ filters; we suggest that this is a photometric signature of the supernova SN 2013cq associated with the GRB. The peak absolute magnitude of the supernova is $M_r=-18.43\pm0.11$., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures. Accepted in ApJ

The XQ-100 survey provides optical and near infrared coverage of 36 blindly selected, intervening damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at 2 < z < 4, simultaneously covering the MgII doublet at 2796A, 2803A, and the Ly-alpha transition. Using the XQ-100 DLA sample, we investigate the completeness of selecting DLA absorbers based on their MgII rest-frame equivalent width (W2796) at these redshifts. Of the 29 DLAs with clean MgII profiles, we find that six (20% of DLAs) have W2796 < 0.6A. The DLA incidence rate of W2796 < 0.6A absorbers is a factor of ~5 higher than what is seen in z~1 samples, indicating a potential evolution in the MgII properties of DLAs with redshift. All of the W2796 < 0.6A DLAs have low metallicities (-2.5 < [M/H] < -1.7), small velocity widths (v90 < 50 km/s), and tend to have relatively low N(HI). We demonstrate that the exclusion of these low W2796 DLAs results in a higher mean N(HI) which in turn leads to a ~7% increase in the cosmological gas density of HI of DLAs at 2 < z < 4; and that this exclusion has a minimal effect on the HI-weighted mean metallicity., Comment: Accepted into MNRAS Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

The XQ-100 survey has provided high signal-noise spectra of 100 redshift 3-4.5 quasars with the X-Shooter spectrograph. The metal abundances for 13 elements in the 41 damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) identified in the XQ-100 sample are presented, and an investigation into abundances of a variety of DLA classes is conducted. The XQ-100 DLA sample contains five DLAs within 5000 km/s of their host quasar (proximate DLAs; PDLAs) as well as three sightlines which contain two DLAs within 10,000 km/s of each other along the same line-of-sight (multiple DLAs; MDLAs). Combined with previous observations in the literature, we demonstrate that PDLAs with logN(HI)<21.0 show lower [S/H] and [Fe/H] (relative to intervening systems with similar redshift and N(HI)), whilst higher [S/H] and [Si/H] are seen in PDLAs with logN(HI)>21.0. These abundance discrepancies are independent of their line-of-sight velocity separation from the host quasar, and the velocity width of the metal lines (v90). Contrary to previous studies, MDLAs show no difference in [alpha/Fe] relative to single DLAs matched in metallicity and redshift. In addition, we present follow-up UVES data of J0034+1639, a sightline containing three DLAs, including a metal-poor DLA with [Fe/H]=-2.82 (the third lowest [Fe/H] in DLAs identified to date) at z=4.25. Lastly we study the dust-corrected [Zn/Fe], emphasizing that near-IR coverage of X-Shooter provides unprecedented access to MgII, CaII and TiII lines (at redshifts 3-4) to provide additional evidence for subsolar [Zn/Fe] ratio in DLAs., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 19 pages plus Appendix material (102 pages total)

Observational evidence shows that low-redshift galaxies are surrounded by extended haloes of multiphase gas, the so-called 'circumgalactic medium' (CGM). To study the survival of relatively cool gas (T < 10^5 K) in the CGM, we performed a set of hydrodynamical simulations of cold (T = 10^4 K) neutral gas clouds travelling through a hot (T = 2x10^6 K) and low-density (n = 10^-4 cm^-3) coronal medium, typical of Milky Way-like galaxies at large galactocentric distances (~ 50-150 kpc). We explored the effects of different initial values of relative velocity and radius of the clouds. Our simulations were performed on a two-dimensional grid with constant mesh size (2 pc) and they include radiative cooling, photoionization heating and thermal conduction. We found that for large clouds (radii larger than 250 pc) the cool gas survives for very long time (larger than 250 Myr): despite that they are partially destroyed and fragmented into smaller cloudlets during their trajectory, the total mass of cool gas decreases at very low rates. We found that thermal conduction plays a significant role: its effect is to hinder formation of hydrodynamical instabilities at the cloud-corona interface, keeping the cloud compact and therefore more difficult to destroy. The distribution of column densities extracted from our simulations are compatible with those observed for low-temperature ions (e.g. SiII and SiIII) and for high-temperature ions (OVI) once we take into account that OVI covers much more extended regions than the cool gas and, therefore, it is more likely to be detected along a generic line of sight., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures.
