We study the dynamics of solutions for a family of nonlinear Schroedinger equations on the circle, with a smooth convolution potential and Gevrey regular initial data. Our main result is the construction of an asymptotically full measure set of small-amplitude time almost-periodic solutions, which are dense on invariant tori. In regions corresponding to positive actions, we prove that such maximal invariant tori are Banach manifolds, which provide a Cantor foliation of the phase space. As a consequence, we establish that, for many small initial data, the Gevrey norm of the solution remains approximately constant for all time and hence the elliptic fixed point at the origin is Lyapunov statistically stable. This is first result in KAM Theory for PDEs that regards the persistence of a large measure set of invariant tori and hence may be viewed as a strict extension to the infinite dimensional setting of the classical KAM theorem., Comment: 46 pages

We study the existence of infinite-dimensional invariant tori in a mechanical system of infinitely many rotators weakly interacting with each other. We consider explicitly interactions depending only on the angles, with the aim of discussing in a simple case the analyticity properties to be required on the perturbation of the integrable system in order to ensure the persistence of a large measure set of invariant tori with finite energy. The proof we provide of the persistence of the invariant tori implements the Renormalization Group scheme based on the tree formalism -- i.e. the graphical representation of the solutions of the equations of motion in terms of trees -- which has been widely used in finite-dimensional problems. The method is very effectual and flexible: it naturally extends, once the functional setting has been fixed, to the infinite-dimensional case with only minor technical-natured adaptations., Comment: 41 pages, 26 figures

We prove that all the solutions of a quasi-periodically forced linear Klein-Gordon equation $\psi_{tt}-\psi_{xx}+\mathtt{m}\psi+Q(\omega t)\psi=0 $ where $ Q(\omega t) := a^{(2)}(\omega t, x) \partial_{xx} + a^{(1)}(\omega t, x)\partial_x + a^{(0)}(\omega t, x) $ is a differential operator of order $ 2 $, parity preserving and reversible, are almost periodic in time and uniformly bounded for all times, provided that the coefficients $ a^{(2) }, a^{(1) }, a^{(0) } $ are small enough and the forcing frequency $\omega\in {\mathbb R}^{\nu}$ belongs to a Borel set of asymptotically full measure. This result is obtained by reducing the Klein-Gordon equation to a diagonal constant coefficient system with purely imaginary eigenvalues. The main difficulty is the presence in the perturbation $ Q (\omega t) $ of the second order differential operator $ a^{(2)}(\omega t, x)\partial_{xx} $. In suitable coordinates the Klein-Gordon equation is the composition of two backward/forward quasi-periodic in time perturbed transport equations with non-constant coefficients, up to lower order pseudo-differential remainders. We consider the one-dimensional NLS equation with a convolution potential and a quintic nonlinearity. We prove that, for most choices of potentials with polynomially decreasing Fourier coefficients, there exist almost-periodic solutions in the Gevrey class with frequency satisfying a Bryuno non-resonance condition. This allows convolution potentials of class $C^p$, for any integer $p$: as far as we know this is the first result where the regularity of the potential is arbitrarily large and not compensated by a corresponding smoothing of the nonlinearity., Comment: 140 pages, 32 figures

Motivated by the problem of long time stability vs. instability of KAM tori of the Nonlinear cubic Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) on the two dimensional torus $\mathbb T^2:= (\mathbb R/2\pi \mathbb Z)^2$, we consider a quasi-periodically forced NLS equation on $\mathbb T^2$ arising from the linearization of the NLS at a KAM torus. We prove a reducibility result as well as long time stability of the origin. The main novelty is to obtain the precise asymptotic expansion of the frequencies which allows us to impose Melnikov conditions at arbitrary order.

This article is concerned with analytic Hamiltonian dynamical systems in infinite dimension in a neighborhood of an elliptic fixed point. Given a quadratic Hamiltonian, we consider the set of its analytic higher order perturbations. We first define the subset of elements which are formally symplectically conjugacted to a (formal) Birkhoff normal form. We prove that if the quadratic Hamiltonian satisfies a Diophantine-like condition and if such a perturbation is formally symplectically conjugated to the quadratic Hamiltonian, then it is also analytically symplectically conjugated to it. Of course what is an analytic symplectic change of variables depends strongly on the choice of the phase space. Here we work on periodic functions with Gevrey regularity., Comment: 28 pages

All the almost periodic solutions for non integrable PDEs found in the literature are very regular (at least $C^\infty$) and, hence, very close to quasi periodic ones. This fact is deeply exploited in the existing proofs. Proving the existence of almost periodic solutions with finite regularity is a main open problem in KAM theory for PDEs. Here we consider the one dimensional NLS with external parameters and construct almost periodic solutions which have only Sobolev regularity both in time and space. Moreover many of our solutions are so only in a weak sense. We prove the existence of almost-periodic solutions for quasi-linear perturbations of the Airy equation. This is the first result about the existence of this type of solutions for a quasi-linear PDE. The solutions turn out to be analytic in time and space. To prove our result we use a Craig-Wayne approach combined with a KAM reducibility scheme and pseudo-differential calculus on ${\mathbb T}^\infty$.

We study the reducibility of a Linear Schr\"odinger equation subject to a small unbounded almost-periodic perturbation which is analytic in time and space. Under appropriate assumptions on the smallness, analiticity and on the frequency of the almost-periodic perturbation, we prove that such an equation is reducible to constant coefficients via an analytic almost-periodic change of variables. In this paper we study the existence and linear stability of almost periodic solutions for a NLS equation on the circle with external parameters. Starting from the seminal result of Bourgain (2005) on the quintic NLS, we propose a novel approach allowing to prove in a unified framework the persistence of finite and infinite dimensional invariant tori, which are the support of the desired solutions. The persistence result is given through a rather abstract "counter-term theorem" `a la Herman, directly in the original elliptic variables without passing to action-angle ones. Our framework allows us to find "many more" almost periodic solutions with respect to the existing literature and consider also non-translation invariant PDEs., Comment: 44 pages

We develop KAM theory close to an elliptic fixed point for quasi-linear Hamiltonian perturbations of the dispersive Degasperis-Procesi equation on the circle. The overall strategy in KAM theory for quasi-linear PDEs is based on Nash-Moser nonlinear iteration, pseudo differential calculus and normal form techniques. In the present case the complicated symplectic structure, the weak dispersive effects of the linear flow and the presence of strong resonant interactions require a novel set of ideas. The main points are to exploit the integrability of the unperturbed equation, to look for special wave packet solutions and to perform a very careful algebraic analysis of the resonances. Our approach is quite general and can be applied also to other 1d integrable PDEs. We are confident for instance that the same strategy should work for the Camassa-Holm equation.

We study stability times for a family of parameter dependent nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations on the circle, close to the origin. Imposing a suitable Diophantine condition (first introduced by Bourgain), we prove a rather flexible Birkhoff Normal Form theorem, which implies, e.g., exponential and sub-exponential time estimates in the Sobolev and Gevrey class respectively., Comment: 52 pages

We consider the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) on the two-dimensional torus. The equation admits a special family of elliptic invariant quasiperiodic tori called finite-gap solutions. These are inherited from the integrable 1D model (cubic NLS on the circle) by considering solutions that depend only on one variable. We study the long-time stability of such invariant tori for the 2D NLS model and show that, under certain assumptions and over sufficiently long timescales, they exhibit a strong form of transverse instability in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ ($0

We prove reducibility of a class of quasi-periodically forced linear equations of the form \[ \partial_tu-\partial_x\circ (1+a(\omega t, x))u+\mathcal{Q}(\omega t)u=0,\quad x\in\mathbb{T}:=\mathbb{R}/2\pi\mathbb{Z}, \] where $u=u(t,x)$, $a$ is a small, $C^{\infty}$ function, $\mathcal{Q}$ is a pseudo differential operator of order $-1$, provided that $\omega\in\mathbb{R}^{\nu}$ satisfies appropriate non-resonance conditions. Such PDEs arise by linearizing the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation at a small amplitude quasi-periodic function. Our work provides a first fundamental step in developing a KAM theory for perturbations of the DP equation on the circle. Following \cite{Airy}, our approach is based on two main points: first a reduction in orders based on an Egorov type theorem then a KAM diagonalization scheme. In both steps the key difficulites arise from the asymptotically linear dispersion law. In view of the application to the nonlinear context we prove sharp \emph{tame} bounds on the diagonalizing change of variables. We remark that the strategy and the techniques proposed are applicable for proving reducibility of more general classes of linear pseudo differential first order operators.

In this paper we prove reducibility of classes of linear first order operators on tori by applying a generalization of Moser's theorem on straightening of vector fields on a torus. We consider vector fields which are a $C^\infty$ perturbations of a constant vector field, and prove that they are conjugated --by a $C^\infty$ torus diffeomorphism-- to a constant diophantine flow, provided that the perturbation is small in some given $H^{s_1}$ norm and that the initial frequency is in some Cantor-like set. Actually in the classical results of this type the regularity of the change of coordinates which straightens the perturbed vector field coincides with the class of regularity in which the perturbation is required to be small. This improvement is achieved thanks to ideas and techniques coming from the Nash-Moser theory.

In this paper we study long time stability of a class of nontrivial, quasi-periodic solutions depending on one spacial variable of the cubic defocusing non-linear Schr\"odinger equation on the two dimensional torus. We prove that these quasi-periodic solutions are orbitally stable for finite but long times, provided that their Fourier support and their frequency vector satisfy some complicated but explicit condition, which we show holds true for most solutions. The proof is based on a normal form result. More precisely we expand the Hamiltonian in a neighborhood of a quasi-periodic solution, we reduce its quadratic part to diagonal constant coefficients through a KAM scheme, and finally we remove its cubic terms with a step of nonlinear Birkhoff normal form. The main difficulty is to impose second and third order Melnikov conditions; this is done by combining the techniques of reduction in order of pseudo-differential operators with the algebraic analysis of resonant quadratic Hamiltonians.

We consider a class of fully nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations and we prove the existence and the stability of Cantor families of quasi-periodic, small amplitude solutions. We deal with reversible autonomous nonlinearities and we look for analytic solutions. Note that this is the first result on analytic quasi-periodic solutions for fully nonlinear PDEs.

We discuss a Nash-Moser/ KAM algorithm for the construction of invariant tori for {\em tame} vector fields. Similar algorithms have been studied widely both in finite and infinite dimensional contexts: we are particularly interested in the second case where tameness properties of the vector fields become very important. We focus on the formal aspects of the algorithm and particularly on the minimal hypotheses needed for convergence. We discuss various applications where we show how our algorithm allows to reduce to solving only linear forced equations. We consider the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation of degree five on the circle $\mathbb{S}^1 = \mathbb{R}/2\pi$. We prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions which bifurcate from "resonant" solutions (studied in [14]) of the system obtained by truncating the Hamiltonian after one step of Birkhoff normal form, exhibiting recurrent exchange of energy between some Fourier modes. We consider the completely resonant defocusing non-linear Schr\"odinger equation on the two dimensional torus with any analytic gauge invariant nonlinearity. Fix $s>1$. We show the existence of solutions of this equation which achieve arbitrarily large growth of $H^s$ Sobolev norms. We also give estimates for the time required to attain this growth.

In this paper we consider a class of fully nonlinear forced and reversible Schroedinger equations and prove existence and stability of quasi-periodic solutions. We use a Nash-Moser algorithm together with a reducibility theorem on the linearized operator in a neighborhood of zero. Due to the presence of the highest order derivatives in the non-linearity the classic KAM-reducibility argument fails and one needs to use a wider class of changes of variables such has diffeomorphisms of the torus and pseudo-differential operators. This procedure automtically produces a change of variables, well defined on the phase space of the equation, which diagonalizes the operator linearized at the solution. We prove an abstract Implicit Function Theorem with parameters for smooth operators defined on sequence scales, modeled for the search of quasi-periodic solutions of PDEs. The tame estimates required for the inverse linearised operators at each step of the iterative scheme are deduced via a multiscale inductive argument. The Cantor like set of parameters where the solution exists is defined in a non inductive way. This formulation completely decouples the iterative scheme from the measure theoretical analysis of the parameters where the small divisors non-resonance conditions are verified. As an application, we deduce the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for forced NLW and NLS equations on any compact Lie group or manifold which is homogeneous with respect to a compact Lie group, extending previous results valid only for tori. We discuss the stability of a class of normal forms of the completely resonant non--linear Schr\"odinger equation on a torus described in a previous paper. The discussion is essentially combinatorial and algebraic in nature. Thus this paper contains the proof of two Theorems of algebraic, combinatorial and geometric nature, which we need in order to prove stability of certain solutions of the non--linear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation on a torus.

The KAM theorem for analytic quasi-integrable anisochronous Hamiltonian systems yields that the perturbation expansion (Lindstedt series) for quasi-periodic solutions with Diophantine frequency vector converges. If one studies the Lindstedt series, one finds that convergence is ultimately related to the presence of cancellations between contributions of the same perturbation order. In turn, this is due to symmetries in the problem. Such symmetries are easily visualised in action-angle coordinates, where KAM theorem is usually formulated, by exploiting the analogy between Lindstedt series and perturbation expansions in quantum field theory and, in particular, the possibility of expressing the solutions in terms of tree graphs, which are the analogue of Feynman diagrams. If the unperturbed system is isochronous, Moser's modifying terms theorem ensures that an analytic quasi-periodic solution with the same Diophantine frequency vector as the unperturbed Hamiltonian exists for the system obtained by adding a suitable constant (counterterm) to the vector field. Also in this case, one can follow the alternative approach of studying the perturbation expansion for both the solution and the counterterm, and again convergence of the two series is obtained as a consequence of deep cancellations between contributions of the same order. We revisit Moser's theorem, by studying the perturbation expansion one obtains by working in Cartesian coordinates. We investigate the symmetries giving rise to the cancellations which makes possible the convergence of the series. We find that the cancellation mechanism works in a completely different way in Cartesian coordinates. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions, for a large Lebesgue measure set of frequencies, in the nonlinear beam equation with a weak quadratic and velocity dependent nonlinearity and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Such nonlinear PDE can be regarded as a simple model describing oscillations of flexible structures like suspension bridges in presence of an uniform wind flow. The periodic solutions are explicitly constructed by means of a perturbative expansion which can be considered the analogue of the Lindstedt series expansion for the invariant tori in classical mechanics. We consider the one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fully resonant case (absence of the zero-mass term). We investigate conservation of small amplitude periodic-solutions for a large set measure of frequencies. In particular we show that there are infinitely many periodic solutions which continue the linear ones involving an arbitrary number of resonant modes, provided the corresponding frequencies are large enough and close enough to each other (wave packets with large wave number).

We consider the nonlinear string equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions $u_{xx}-u_{tt}=\phi(u)$, with $\phi(u)=\Phi u^{3} + O(u^{5})$ odd and analytic, $\Phi\neq0$, and we construct small amplitude periodic solutions with frequency $\o$ for a large Lebesgue measure set of $\o$ close to 1. This extends previous results where only a zero-measure set of frequencies could be treated (the ones for which no small divisors appear). The proof is based on combining the Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition, which leads to two separate sets of equations dealing with the resonant and nonresonant Fourier components, respectively the Q and the P equations, with resummation techniques of divergent powers series, allowing us to control the small divisors problem.
