Optimal multi-layer device design requires consideration of fabrication uncertainties associated with inter-layer alignment and conformal layering. We present layer-restricted topology optimization (TO), a novel technique which mitigates the effects of unwanted conformal layering for multi-layer structures and enables TO in multi-etch material platforms. We explore several approaches to achieve this result compatible with density-based TO projection techniques and geometric constraints. Then, we present a robust TO formulation to design devices resilient to inter-layer misalignment. We introduce the elEmBERT model for chemical classification tasks. It is based on deep learning techniques, such as a multilayer encoder architecture. We demonstrate the opportunities offered by our approach on sets of organic, inorganic and crystalline compounds. In particular, we developed and tested the model using the Matbench and Moleculenet benchmarks, which include crystal properties and drug design-related benchmarks. We also conduct an analysis of vector representations of chemical compounds, shedding light on the underlying patterns in structural data. Our model exhibits exceptional predictive capabilities and proves universally applicable to molecular and material datasets. Data science and technology offer transformative tools and methods to science. This review article highlights latest development and progress in the interdisciplinary field of data-driven plasma science (DDPS). A large amount of data and machine learning algorithms go hand in hand. Most plasma data, whether experimental, observational or computational, are generated or collected by machines today. It is now becoming impractical for humans to analyze all the data manually. Therefore, it is imperative to train machines to analyze and interpret (eventually) such data as intelligently as humans but far more efficiently in quantity. Despite the recent impressive progress in applications of data science to plasma science and technology, the emerging field of DDPS is still in its infancy. Fueled by some of the most challenging problems such as fusion energy, plasma processing of materials, and fundamental understanding of the universe through observable plasma phenomena, it is expected that DDPS continues to benefit significantly from the interdisciplinary marriage between plasma science and data science into the foreseeable future., Comment: 112 pages (including 700+ references), 44 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science as a part of the IEEE Golden Anniversary Special Issue

The spin filter capability of a (0,8) armchair graphene nanoribbon with Fe atoms at substitutional sites is investigated by density functional theory in combination with the non-equilibrium Greens function technique. For specific arrangements, a high degree of spin polarization is achieved. These include a single substitution at an edge position or double substitution in the central sector of the transmission element. The possibility of switching between majority and minority spin polarization by changing the double substitution geometry is predicted. Including the bias dependence of the transmission function proves to be essential for correct representation of the spin-resolved current-voltage profiles.

We show, with both experiment and theory, that adsorption of $CO_2$ is sensitive to charge on a capturing model carbonaceous surface. In the experiment we dope superfluid helium droplets with $C_{60}$ and $CO_2$ and expose them to ionising free electrons. Both positively and negatively charged $C_{60}(CO_2)_n^{+/-}$ cluster ion distributions are observed with a high-resolution mass spectrometer and these show remarkable and reproducible anomalies in intensities that are strongly dependent on the charge. The highest adsorption capacity is seen with $C_{60}^+$. Complementary density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provided insight into the nature of the interaction of charged $C_{60}$ with $CO_2$ as well as trends in the packing of $C_{60}^+$ and $C_{60}^-$. The quadrupole moment of $CO_2$ itself was seen to be decisive in determining the charge dependence of the observed adsorption features. Our findings are expected to apply to adsorption of $CO_2$ by charged surfaces in general.

PAHs are known to be one of the carriers of the ubiquitous aromatic IR bands. The IR spectra of many objects show IR emission features derived from PAH molecules of different size. Still some of the characteristics of the emitting population remain unclear. The emission bands show details which cannot be explained so far. These unidentified IR features require further laboratory and observational investigations. We present a theoretical study of the IR spectra of PAHs containing (5,7)-member ring defects, focusing on pyrene and coronene. Using density functional theory, we investigate the effects of such defects on the IR spectra of pyrene and coronene and their cations and anions. In addition, we explore parts of the potential energy surface of the neutral species and discuss alternative formation pathways. The addition of (5,7)-membered ring defects in pyrene and coronene results in a change of the IR spectra, both molecules lose their typical spectroscopic signature. We find shifts in the positions of the band as well as different intensities and a rise in the number of features. The boundaries in terms of the size of the PAHs exhibiting a (5,7)-membered ring defect are studied and shown. Investigation of the minimal energy pathway leads to a result of 8.21 eV for pyrene and 8.41 eV for coronene as minimum activation barriers for the transformation from ground state to defected state. Whereas pyrene retains some of its symmetry due to the symmetry exhibited by the Stone-Wales defect itself, coronene loses much more of its symmetry. The formation of these (5,7)-ring defects in PAHs may be well supported in AGB stars or PNe. Those environments strongly enable the transition from the ground state to the defect state. Therefore the knowledge of the IR spectra of these molecules will support future investigations aiming for a thorough understanding of the unidentified IR emission bands., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We calculate harmonic frequencies of the three most abundant carbonic acid conformers. For this, different model chemistries are investigated with respect to their benefits and shortcomings. Based on these results we use perturbation theory to calculate anharmonic corrections at the {\omega}B97XD/aug-cc-pVXZ, X=D,T,Q, level of theory and compare them with recent experimental data and theoretical predictions. A discrete variable representation method is used to predict the large anharmonic contributions to the frequencies of the stretching vibrations in the hydrogen bonds in the carbonic acid dimer. Moreover, we re-investigate the energetics of the formation of the carbonic acid dimer from its constituents water and carbon dioxide using a high-level extrapolation method. We find that the {\omega}B97XD functional performs well in estimating the fundamental frequencies of the carbonic acid conformers. Concerning the reaction energetics, the accuracy of {\omega}B97XD is even comparable to the high-level extrapolation method. Energetic and geometric aspects of the permeation of low-Z atoms through graphene sheets are investigated. Energy barriers and deformations are calculated via density functional theory for the permeation of H, He, Li and Be atoms at several surface sites and at a hollow site for atoms B, C, O and Ne atoms. Graphene is modeled by large planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the convergence of both energy barriers and deformation curves with increasing size of these hydrocarbons is investigated. Effective energy curves are summarized for the atoms under consideration in three different interaction regimes realized different geometrical constraints. In addition to the bare graphene model, the interaction between low-Z atoms and 100% hydrogenated coronene as a model for graphane is also investigated. The adiabatic barriers range from about 5 eV (1 eV = 1.602 x 10-19 J) for H to about 20 eV for Ne. Facilitation of the permeation by temporary chemical bonding is observed for O and C and for B and Be when interacting with hydrogenated coronene. The results are in good agreement with existing experimental and theoretical work and reflect the essential physics of the dynamics of H bombardment of graphite (0001) surfaces. Implications for modeling chemical sputtering of graphite in a mixed-material scenario as it will be the case in the next step fusion experiment ITER and potential building are discussed., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

The thermal stabilization of thin gold nanowires with a diameter of about 2 nm by surfactants is investigated by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations. While the well-known melting point depression leads to a much lower melting of gold nanowires compared to bulk gold, coating the nanowires with surfactants can reverse this, given that the attractive interaction between surfactant molecules and gold atoms lies beyond a certain threshold. It is found that the melting process of coated nanowires is dominated by surface instability patterns, whereas the melting behaviour of gold nanowires in vacuum is dominated by the greater mobility of atoms with lower coordination numbers that are located at edges and corners. The suppression of the melting by surfactants is explained by the isotropic pressure acting on the gold surface (due to the attractive interaction) which successfully suppresses large-amplitude thermal motions of the gold atoms.
