POETICS , *MANUSCRIPTS - Abstract
This essay studies what happens to the poetics of a text that was first written on or for a certain internet platform when it is later copy-pasted to a different literary medium - that of an edited and printed book. The main target of the discussion is Finnish author Karri Kokko's conceptual literary work Retweeted (2016), a print-on-demand book, the roots of which are firmly in both the traditions of print media and the digital interfaces of the social media platform Twitter. The analysis pays close attention to the medial qualities of both Twitter and the conceptual novel that draws material from it. The essay aims to highlight the poetic qualities of the material produced and circulated on Twitter, the affectivity of the platform itself, and the effects the transposition into the codex format has on these phenomena. The essay argues that when investigating the poetics of internet-based collages, and social media platforms more generally, one must be mindful of 1) the logics of writing and revenue on internet platforms, and 2) the paratextuality of both the original online platforms and the book at hand. Then they will be looking for one thing only: a safe home. And providing an appropriate post disaster home for refugees and displaced persons is a challenging topic. This study is focusing on Syria and the internally displaced persons in Syria. Their Story started in 2012 and the number of the internally displaced people in Syria in 2021 according to UNHCR is 6.7 million. Due to this huge number, the displaced people camps in Syria became cities of chaos and 69% of the shelters in these camps are tents, which are emergency shelters and provide no safety to Syrian displaced people. The aim of this thesis is designing a safe and comfort shelter for the displaced persons in Syria in line with the technological development and by taking onto account friendly environmentally materials with low cost. The first proposal aims to use local materials (Clay) for building low cost, climate responsive and environmentally friendly shelters, which provide appropriate living conditions in both cold winter and hot summer. The second and third proposal aim to use 3D printers for printing two types of shelters, the first one is print on demand by using friendly environmentally materials and the second one is an eco-friendly printed module.

- Abstract
The purpose of this application, under Articles 78.2.3 and 80.2.1 of the Code, is to confirm the availability of the nominal species Tapirus pygmaeus Van Roosmalen & Van Hooft in Van Roosmalen 2013 [22 April] for the black dwarf tapir, thus also confirming its priority over the subjective synonym Tapirus kabomani Cozzuol et al., 2013 [December], by ruling that Van Roosmalen's edited book Barefoot through the Amazon - On the path of evolution, in which T. pygmaeus was proposed, is not unavailable solely on account of its being advertised as a print-on-demand work, but is an original multiple-copy, simultaneously available edition. It is shown that Van Roosmalen & Van Hooft's publication contained information sufficient to satisfy the criteria of availability under Articles 10 to 20 of the Code. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuing to consider the trends of the world book publishing, it is impossible not to dwell on the self-publishing, which has been gaining momentum in the world since the beginning of the century. Back in 2008, samizdat was equal to the number of titles published with books published by traditional publishers. In 2018, 1 million book titles were self-published in the US. China has crossed the million mark long ago. Statistics from China and Japan coming to the International Publishers Association also include self-published books, so the number of titles published in China is a staggering 65 007 519 and Japan's 2 017 808, including those published by traditional publishers in China — 203 000, and in Japan — 76 581 [1]. In our study, we sought to identify causes and identify trends in the emergence, growth, and spread of self-publishing in European countries and the United States. How self-publishing allows authors of publications to bypass publishers and bookstores and sell books directly to a potential reader. The impact of self-publishing on the publishing industry as a whole has been established: reducing the cost of printing, storing and distributing books. It has been proven that the impetus for self-publishing publications has been the development of technology, the improvement of e-book and tablet readers that have improved readability; provided free access to view and purchase the book. The article explores the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing a book; the role of publishing platforms that allow the author to publish the book independently; the author's image risks are analyzed when publishing a book with self-view; attention is paid to the concept of graphic arts; the difference between graphomaniac and true self-expression is determined. Literary genres preferred by authors who decide to publish a book by themselves are considered. Self-published books are generally not eligible for prizes for literary or artistic achievement. The article gives examples of the first literary awards for self-published authors.,

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the ANRT, its purpose and activity in the French national network for the dissemination and preservation of PhD theses. Design/methodology/approach – The paper includes a historical study and an evaluation of current activities and future perspectives. Findings – The ANRT has played a significant role in the back-office of the French network for the dissemination and preservation of PhD theses for over 40 years. Its online catalogue contains more than 200,000 PhD theses that academic or other research institutions can order in print format or on microfiche. Complementary to this national mandate, the ANRT runs a print-on-demand service for more than 7,200 PhD theses called "Thèses à la carte". Today, the development of electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) and open access is challenging the future of the ANRT. Originality/value – The ANRT Lille is one of those institutions that are more or less unknown to the wider public and even to LIS professionals. This paper presents it for the first time to a larger and international readership. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

African Books Collective (ABC) is a unique organization: it is owned and governed by independent African publishers and was founded by a group of these publishers in order to take control of their own overseas marketing and distribution. Its mission is cultural, to strengthen African indigenous publishing, and to give Africa a voice in discourse about African books and publishing, and about African issues generally through the books published. After 23 years in being, ABC handles exclusive distribution of over 2,000 titles from 136 publishers in 24 African countries, marketing to customers worldwide. It has transformed itself from a donor-supported organization to a wholly financially independent social enterprise. The history of ABC, including its harnessing of digital technologies to become independent, is a success story, although many challenges remain to increase demand for the wealth of African scholarship and literature. DIGITIZATION of library materials , *ON-demand publications , *EFFECT of technological innovations on academic libraries , *TECHNOLOGICAL innovation in libraries , *LIBRARY surveys - Abstract
This article presents key findings from an investigation entitled Digitization on Demand in Academic Research Libraries. The investigation was carried out in 2010 as part of the Arcadia Fellowship program, exploring the role of academic libraries in the digital age. The original study investigated three technological solutions to perceived problem areas in the digitization workflow. This article is narrower in focus, examining the third area, print-on-demand technologies and their potential role in academic service provision. There is a specific focus upon the Espresso Print-on-demand book printing machine. The article includes findings from a limited survey into potential demand from faculty and library staff. In concludes that while the benefits from introducing such a service could be high, they must be viewed in the context of high start-up costs. This situation can perhaps be viewed as a microcosm of the problems surrounding many library service innovations in general. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Over the next 5 years, digital textbook sales in the United States will surpass 25% of combined new textbook sales for the Higher Education and Career Education markets. Moreover, we expect digital to be the dominant form factor in Higher Education textbooks inside of 7 years. This growth in digital textbooks will boost revenues in excess of $1.5 billion within 5 years (Private: Digital Textbooks Reach the Tipping Point in the US Higher Education-A Revised 5-Year Projection). This growth will also create avenues for new digital product models, allow new content publishers to enter the textbook market, lead to fundamental shifts in purchasing patterns around learning materials, and expedite the formal adoption of open educational resources to augment premium digital content. The article looks at the changing nature of the library and its collections: in other words, paper-based and/or electronic based library collections, as well as the growing competition experienced from outside competitive forces in the field of information provision. The concept of the hybrid library is investigated in relation to the three areas central to the traditional identity of the academic library: services, the collection, and the library as place. The importance of the impact of the three areas on each other is highlighted, especially against the background of changing user needs. The hybrid library has to adapt to accommodate those needs. The paper suggests strategies within each area for optimising library use. The paper attempts to get a glimpse of the future of the hybrid library and how it is possible to transform the traditional academic research library into the future destination of choice. This interpretive study of change in Australian book publishing, included a survey of book publishers and the conduct of 14 case studies in five categories of publisher: general trade, academic, professional, specialist and university. This paper reports in detail on the experience on one general trade publisher as it sought to face the challenges of globalization and of organizational and technological change. The major finding was that digitization is indeed, impacting on business models for book publishing, with current models comprising something of a hybrid between the traditional and the innovative. Reflecting the presence in Australia of similar trends and issues that are affecting book publishing around the world, the findings are of relevance both to book publishers and to researchers. The work is original in that relatively little recent academic research has been conducted into book publishing in Australia, particularly as regards the implications of digitization for business models. To pursue emerging revenue opportunities in the most cost-efficient way (or sometimes to be able to pursue them at all), book publishers are going to have to adopt a StartwithXML workflow. That means their content needs to live in an XML-structured document from the earliest possible moment, which could be “inception”, and carry within it metadata about the document structure, the content itself, and the rights to all components. The tools exist to do this, but the organizational challenges of changing workflows and inventing new procedures are daunting. This project explores the business case and the implementation challenges, including case studies of companies who have already begun to work this way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Academic libraries, university presses, and commercial ventures are embracing print-on-demand publishing to improve services as well as reduce costs. The concept dates to the early 1990s, hut problems with the technology coupled with a lack of interest by libraries and book vendors hindered its popularity. Today, print-on-demand remains ideal for institutional repositories and digital collections, as well as for collection development. It is especially popular for users with print preferences. Many publishers and librarians believe print-on-demand holds more promise for libraries than electronic books. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Internet is an extremely rich source of online information and services. However, complex client requests, involving and combining several types of services, are difficult to handle without some form of support. This is particularly true in the case of electronic commerce, where complex transactions may involve several independent good providers, bankers, delivery services, etc. Hence the need for “brokering” services, whose offers combine in the best possible way offers coming from existing, specialized services publicly available on the Net, in order to match customers' constraints. The Xpect framework for electronic commerce has been developed for that purpose. In this paper, we illustrate it through a case study in the context of distributed print-on-demand. We propose an architecture and implementation of the case study based on CLF, a distributed application development tool relying on a rich object model and its corresponding coordination scripting facility. If a company chooses digital textile printing, which have higher unit price, would it not be beneficial to know what possibilities the technique bring to the product development process? Are there design possibilities that companies using traditional textile printing cannot obtain?Advantages of using digital textile printing could for example give a competitive edge, which that distinguish the brand and offer new designs. Such insights are relevant knowledge when designing textile products to be successfully introduced to the market. The aim of this master thesis is to design a collection of textile pattern design, and implement them in a textile interior product. At the same time, the aim is to explore the advantages and disadvantages of digital textile printing.During a literature review it was identified that the disadvantages of digital textile printing are the relatively high price and the slow printing speed. These are crucial factors when choosing printing method, but reviewing digital printing there are interesting qualities that provide new possibilities. For example, when it comes to the pattern design process, digital textile printing eliminates design constrains such as repeat size and limited use of colors. The abilities to print a single product or small batches without a pre-production process illustrate potential for print-on-demand production. It is therefore concluded in this thesis that digital printing enables customization and illustrates potential for new innovational ideas. When reviewing the ecological sustainability qualities of several printing techniques, it is concluded that digital textile printing have a lot of advantages. Digital textile printing is consistently less wasteful, and with minimal excess production no unnecessary products are manufactured Validerat; 20160622 (global_studentproject_submitter)

Mossberg (1998) confirms that batch-based logistics in the book industry has several negative consequences. Mossberg (1998) writes the following; "AN ONGOING WASTE OF RESOURCES The unsold books are incurring transportation and inventory costs ... ... surplus - often more than half the recipients edition! -- canceled within three years. Aside from the offensive in this waste of resources, this procedure contributes to the fact that the Swedish book market has got the '' fresh character '' as mentioned earlier -- and as entails a temporal limitation of the Swedish-language literature" (Mossberg, 1998) Mossberg's (1998) findings also support the observations we have made in this study. This constitutes the foundation of this survey, where we contributes for a more effective and sustainable operation at one of Sweden's largest economy book producers. The purpose of this study is to examine the advantages and disadvantages that come with make-to-stock and a batch based logistics management of books. But also to identify the advantages that, according to the theory, can be achieved in a transition to make-to-order with a print-on-demand solution. The goal is to present recommendations for decision-making and future strategy for the company where this study took place, as well as to help other companies with similar needs and requirements. This case study is conducted at a Swedish company which essentially work with customer service / support to businesses using their accounting software and services. An important part of their service means publishing as well as e-books sale of information books. We have noticed that little is done to improve their efficiency and quality in this area. Our study shows that this company would gain several benefits by making use out of a print-on-demand solution. This because it would improve their quality in all respects we’ve focused on, with a lower total cost, no tied up capital and en reduced environmental impact.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the ANRT, its purpose and activity in the French national network for the dissemination and preservation of PhD theses.Design/methodology/approachThe paper includes a historical study and an evaluation of current activities and future perspectives.FindingsThe ANRT has played a significant role in the back‐office of the French network for the dissemination and preservation of PhD theses for over 40 years. Its online catalogue contains more than 200,000 PhD theses that academic or other research institutions can order in print format or on microfiche. Complementary to this national mandate, the ANRT runs a print‐on‐demand service for more than 7,200 PhD theses called “Thèses à la carte”. Today, the development of electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) and open access is challenging the future of the ANRT.Originality/valueThe ANRT Lille is one of those institutions that are more or less unknown to the wider public and even to LIS professionals. This paper presents it for the first time to a larger and international readership.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how the literary site Vulkan.se affects the conditions for publishing, distribution, incorporation in value systems and feedback in the literary process, as it appears in Lars Furuland’s model of this process. The purpose is also to propose an updated version of the model. This is achieved through a qualitative testing of Furuland’s theory. Vulkan.se is analyzed using concepts from the sociology of literature and Lars Furuland’s model “the literary process”, and is put into perspective of previous research and theories on actors and technical development related to the Swedish book market, such as print-on-demand and publishing on the Internet. The results show that web publishing at Vulkan.se can be incorporated into Furuland’s existing model. However, due to the ongoing technical development on the Internet, which has created new ways for the author to create, write, publish and sell books and get feed-back directly from their readers, several internal modifications are proposed.

- Abstract
An Interdisciplinary Journal for the History of Public Health (http://www.ep.liu.se/ej/hygiea//) och International Journal of Ageing and Later Life (www.ep.liu.se/ej/ijal/).

A detailed english description (three pages) is enclosed in the publication.

Books, reading and the publishing industry are experiencing changes motivated by technological advancement. The content has been separated from the media and, therefore, the publishing industry has had to alter its logistic structure, based on physical distribution until recently. Print on demand and online bookstores are now meeting new needs: they have increased the possibilities of visibility and circulation of editorial production, and they have suppressed geographic and physical barriers. This essay studies what happens to the poetics of a text that was first written on or for a certain internet platform when it is later copy-pasted to a different literary medium – that of an edited and printed book. The main target of the discussion is Finnish author Karri Kokko’s conceptual literary work Retweeted (2016), a print-on-demand book, the roots of which are firmly in both the traditions of print media and the digital interfaces of the social media platform Twitter. The essay argues that when investigating the poetics of internet-based collages, and social media platforms more generally, one must be mindful of 1) the logics of writing and revenue on internet platforms, and 2) the paratextuality of both the original online platforms and the book at hand. peerReviewed
