Abstract

Coastal flood damage is primarily the result of extreme sea levels. Climate change is expected to drive an increase in these extremes. While proper estimation of changes in storm surges is essential to estimate changes in extreme sea levels, there remains low confidence in future trends of surge contribution to extreme sea levels. Alerting local populations of imminent extreme sea levels is also critical to protecting coastal populations. Both predicting and projecting extreme sea levels require reliable numerical prediction systems. The SurgeMIP (surge model intercomparison) community has been established to tackle such challenges. Efforts to intercompare storm surge prediction systems and coordinate the community's prediction and projection efforts are introduced. An overview of past and recent advances in storm surge science such as physical processes to consider and the recent development of global forecasting systems are briefly introduced. Selected historical events and drivers behind fast increasing service and knowledge requirements for emergency response to adaptation considerations are also discussed. The community's initial plans and recent progress are introduced. These include the establishment of an intercomparison project, the identification of research and development gaps, and the introduction of efforts to coordinate projections that span multiple climate scenarios.

22. RESPONSE OF CREEPING RED FESCUE SEED FIELDS TO AFTERMATH GRAZING BY BEEF CATTLE.

Abstract

Autumn grazing of creeping red fescue seed fields at moderate stocking rates produced excellent animal gains, while only slightly reducing the subsequent seed yields. Under autumn grazing of moderate intensity (3.7 animal units/ha) steers made gains of over 1 kg/day while seed yields were reduced by 8%. Under grazing of heavy intensity (6.2 animal units/ha) animal gains were almost I kg/day, but seed yields were reduced by 16%. A spring-grazing period reduced seed yields by 35% and was too short to provide animal gains. Removal of the aftermath as hay improved seed yields slightly, particularly in the second and third harvest years. A conversion of TDN to body gain of 5.5:1 indicated that the nutritive quality of the aftermath was adequate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Determination of the Structure of the Argon Cyclobutanone van der Waals Complex

Abstract

The microwave spectra of the argon cyclobutanone van der Waals complex and its three 13C isotopomers have been assigned in the ground state of the ring puckering vibration. The rotational constants and centrifugal distortion constants for the 12C species are determined to be A = 3598.5200(4) MHz, B = 1388.4449(1) MHz, C = 1195.5254(2)MHz, ΔJ = 4.846(2) kHz, ΔJK = 36.11(2) kHz, ΔK = −38.10(8) kHz, δJ = 0.6415(6) kHz, δK = 20.62(4) kHz, Hk = 0.067(4) kHz. The dipole moments have also been measured:  μa = 0.29 D, μb = 2.83 D. The cyclobutanone ring was found to remain planar after complexation with argon. The coordinates of the argon in the monomer's principal axis system are a = 0.23, b = 0.55 (across the ring due to large amplitude bending), and c = 3.48 Å (above the ring). The equilibrium position of argon is in the Cs plane of the complex, 3.48 Å above the ring and shifted 0.23 Å from the C2−C2‘ ring diagonal toward the carbonyl.

28. Collision induced rotational spectrum of allene

Abstract

The far infrared collision induced absorption spectrum for collisions between allene and allene molecules is presented. The anisotropy and large size of allene is shown to dominate the observed rotational spectrum. Only a small fraction of the observed absorbance results from the leading multipole moment (quadrupole), uniform field and isotropic polarizability and interaction potential. An upper limit to the quadrupole moment of allene, Θ = 2·45 × 10-39 C m2, is determined from the low frequency wing of the collision induced absorption spectrum. The anisotropy of the molecular interaction potential, anisotropic polarizability, overlap distortion, field gradient and multipolar terms following the leading quadrupole are shown to contribute higher frequency absorption. Higher frequency collision induced absorption is also calculated when the multipolar expansion to describe the field is replaced by a model with point charges on the allene nuclei. The implication of the point charge model is that the multipole expansion converges slowly for allene-allene collisions.

29. Analysis of collision induced far infrared spectrum of ethylene

Abstract

The theory for collision induced rotational absorption between nonpolar molecules is extended to near-symmetric top molecules using Wigner rotational matrices to represent the field and polarizability in the induced dipole moment. The resulting theory is applied to the collision induced spectrum of ethylene-ethylene. This spectrum is shown to be dominated by absorption due to the off-diagonal quadrupole moment in spherical coordinates, Q¯22. Fitting the calculated to observed absorption coefficient at 140 cm-1 leads to an accurate value of the quadrupole moment difference, Q¯xx - Q¯yy = -4·33 × 10-26 esu·cm2 in molecule fixed cartesian coordinates.

30. Collision induced far infrared spectrum of cyclopropane

Abstract

Rotational collision-induced absorbance has been observed in the far I.R. spectra of cyclopropane samples and cyclopropane-argon mixtures. The part of the spectrum due to the polarizability and quadrupolar and octapolar field is calculated using the literature values of the molecular properties for this oblate symmetric top. Prolate and oblate top molecules are shown to have excess observed absorbance at different frequencies. The excess absorbance is analysed in terms of violations of the multipolar selection rule, ΔK = 0, which is caused by asymmetrical interactions during collisions.

Abstract

We have analysed the activities of a hospital-based stomatherapy service between 1980 and 1983. The average numbers of patients seen per annum included 395 out-patients, 307 in-patients and 116 home visits. Of the 276 in-patients with colostomies, 72% had underlying malignant disease; 17% were performed as emergencies and 51% were temporary stomas. Hospital mortality for patients with a temporary stoma was 19% and only 59% had their temporary stoma reversed. Only 45% of colostomy patients received preoperative counselling and 11% had no regular follow-up. Complications were recorded at some stage after colostomy in 25% but only 10% required surgical refashioning. Of the 184 in-patients with ileostomies, 52% had ulcerative colitis and 41% had Crohn's disease. Only 13% of ileostomies were performed as emergencies, and only 11% were temporary. In contrast to colostomy, 83% of ileostomy patients received preoperative counselling and adequate follow-up was provided for 98% of patients. Complications were recorded in 57% of patients after ileostomy but surgical reconstruction was needed in only 18%.
