This article examines the presentation of libraries during admissions campus tours at a large public university. Perspectives from tour guides, librarians, and admissions staff are considered through an analysis of tour observations and interviews. Tour guides’ statements about the libraries varied, but mostly indicated that they viewed the libraries as positive and valuable places. This article reveals opportunities for collaboration between academic libraries and admissions departments to ensure that tours present information that aids prospective students in understanding the library’s role on a university campus, feeling welcome and comfortable in the library space, and envisioning themselves using the library.

Histamine is a biogenic amine that regulates multiple physiological functions in diverse organisms, specifically playing a central role in the mammalian immune response. The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), excretes histamine in large amounts in its feces as a component of its aggregation pheromone, which contaminates homes. The potential health risks associated with the presence of indoor histamine are unclear, but to predict future exposure risks, it is critical that we understand if other arthropods excrete histamine in any discernible phylogenetic pattern. In the present study, we evaluated histamine excretion by various arthropods; specifically those commonly found in large numbers indoors, other hematophagous species, and other species in the order Hemiptera. To evaluate arthropods for histamine excretion, rearing containers for each arthropod were swabbed and/or the harborage substrates were collected. Samples were then analyzed for the presence of histamine using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. For those arthropods where histamine was present above the method detection limit, total histamine excretion was quantified over a period of 2 wk. Our results indicate that histamine excretion is limited to hematophagous hemipterans (bed bugs, bat bugs, tropical bed bugs, and kissing bugs), suggesting that indoor histamine contamination in the United States can be primarily linked to bed bugs.

Abstract Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an immune disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia. Fostamatinib is an orally administered spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitor intended to treat refractory ITP. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fostamatinib as a subsequent‐line therapy for ITP in adults. We searched four electronic databases for primary studies of any design. Primary efficacy outcomes included proportions of patients achieving overall (≥30 × 109 cells/L), partial (≥50 × 109 cells/L), and stable (as defined in original studies) platelet response. Safety outcomes included rescue medication use and other adverse events. We used narrative synthesis and Mantel–Haenszel random effect meta‐analysis to summarize results. Our systematic review included 11 studies for analyses (n = 722). Weighted mean proportions of patients achieving overall, partial, and stable responses with fostamatinib treatment were 0.70 [0.62, 0.76], 0.48 [0.36, 0.61], and 0.28 [0.16, 0.44], respectively. Fostamatinib was favored over placebo for partial (relative risk [RR] = 3.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.53, 6.06]) and stable (RR = 6.43, 95% CI [1.58, 26.23]) responses. Patients on fostamatinib required less rescue medication and were more likely to experience hypertension. Fostamatinib is a viable subsequent‐line therapy option for refractory ITP. Given the heterogeneous data and large number of small studies, these results should be interpreted cautiously.

Oilseed cakes are by-products of the oil extraction process that are commonly used as animal feed due to their high protein content. However, they can be valorized also in other ways producing for instance protein isolates or bioenergy. In this work, the application of a lignocellulosic fractionation process on an oilseed cake to recover cellulose is tested. Indeed, oilseed cake can have a relevant content of cellulose that can be isolated. It is important to point out that the first hydrolysis step is carried out as an auto-hydrolysis novel process instead of a conventional mild acid hydrolysis to reduce the environmental impact of the process itself. The first aim of this work is to investigate, discuss and verify the applicability of such a fractionation process on oilseed cake. In addition, to further reduce the potential environmental impact of the process, the effects of variation of both NaOH concentration and temperature in the alkaline hydrolysis are investigated and discussed as the second aim. Therefore, experimental tests are carried out at three different NaOH concentrations (i.e., 1.5, 4.0, 16.0% v/v) and two different temperatures (i.e., 25 and 60°C) to make an initial assessment of the optimal conditions for cellulose recovery and reduced environmental impact.

Abstract The need for direct X-ray detection under high photon flux with moderate or high energies (30–100 keV range) has strongly increased with the rise of the 4th Generation Synchrotron Light Sources, characterised by extremely brilliant beamlines, and of other applications such as spectral computed tomography in medicine and non-destructive tests for industry. The novel Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) developed by Redlen Technologies can be considered the reference material for high-flux applications (HF-CZT). The enhanced charge transport properties of the holes allow the mitigation of the effects of radiation induced polarization phenomena, typically observed in standard CZT materials (LF-CZT) under high photon flux. However, standard LF-CZT electrical contacts led to inacceptable high dark leakage currents on HF-CZT devices. In this work, a detailed study on the characteristics of new optimized sputtered platinum electrical contacts on HF-CZT detectors is reported. The results from electrical and spectroscopic investigations, showed the best performances on HF-CZT detectors with platinum anode, coupled with both platinum or gold cathode. The morphology, structure, and composition of Pt/CZT contact have been analysed by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on microscopic lamellas obtained by Focused Ion Beam (FIB), highlighting the presence of CdTeO3 oxide at the metal semiconductor interface.

Accelerated neutron tests on silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power MOSFETs at different temperatures and drain bias voltages were performed at the ChipIr facility (Didcot, UK). A super-junction silicon MOSFET and planar SiC MOSFETs with different technologies made by STMicroelectronics were used. Different test methods were employed to investigate the effects of temperature on neutron susceptibility in power MOSFETs. The destructive tests showed that all investigated devices failed via a single-event burnout (SEB) mechanism. Non-destructive tests conducted by using the power MOSFET as a neutron detector allowed measuring the temperature trend of the deposited charge due to neutron interactions. The results of the destructive tests, in the −50 °C–180 °C temperature range, revealed the lack of a common trend concerning the FIT temperature dependence among the investigated SiC power MOSFETs. Moreover, for some test vehicles, the FIT-temperature curves were dependent on the bias condition. The temperature dependence of the FIT values, observed in some SiC devices, is weaker with respect to that measured in the Si MOSFET. The results of the non-destructive tests showed a good correlation between the temperature trends of the deposited charge with those of FIT data, for both Si and SiC devices.

Commercial cocoa and hazelnut-based sweet spreads typically present a poor nutribiochemical level due to their ingredients and recipes, while nowadays, there is the need of developing sustainable food products addressing both an improved nutritional and environmental profile. The aim of this work was then to develop an innovative hazelnut/carob-based spread with potential high sustainability and nutritional profile, including the exploitation of grape-processing residues (grape skin flour and grapeseed oil) and carob pulp as cocoa surrogate. Rheological (rotational/oscillatory), oxidative, and thermal features of the spread were assessed and compared with two commercial nut-cocoa-based products. Tribology was used to mimic and evaluate the spreads’ behavior during oral consumption, and sensory profile (by quantitative descriptive analysis) was also assessed. All products exhibited a pseudoplastic behavior, with the elastic component prevailing over the viscous one. The innovative product showed the highest lubricity from both rheological and sensory analysis, thus well correlating to the obtained lowest viscosity and friction factor trends. Grapeseed oil provided a better nutritional profile, but the largest amount of unsaturated fatty acids promoted oxidation, despite the higher total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity coming from the use of carob and grape skin powders. The sensory perception investigation revealed a characteristic mouthfeel/flavor for the new spread identified having a more fluid consistency and a bitter/sour taste, together with a greater stickiness and a poorer smoothness due to a higher fiber content and solid fat absence.

BackgroundFew data are available about the durability of the response, the induction of neutralizing antibodies, and the cellular response upon the third dose of the anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine in hemato-oncological patients.ObjectiveTo investigate the antibody and cellular response to the BNT162b2 vaccine in patients with hematological malignancy.MethodsWe measured SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike antibodies, anti-Omicron neutralizing antibodies, and T-cell responses 1 month after the third dose of vaccine in 93 fragile patients with hematological malignancy (FHM), 51 fragile not oncological subjects (FNO) aged 80–92, and 47 employees of the hospital (healthcare workers, (HW), aged 23-66 years. Blood samples were collected at day 0 (T0), 21 (T1), 35 (T2), 84 (T3), 168 (T4), 351 (T pre-3D), and 381 (T post-3D) after the first dose of vaccine. Serum IgG antibodies against S1/S2 antigens of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured at every time point. Neutralizing antibodies were measured at T2, T3 (anti-Alpha), T4 (anti-Delta), and T post-3D (anti-Omicron). T cell response was assessed at T post-3D.ResultsAn increase in anti-S1/S2 antigen antibodies compared to T0 was observed in the three groups at T post-3D. After the third vaccine dose, the median antibody level of FHM subjects was higher than after the second dose and above the putative protection threshold, although lower than in the other groups. The neutralizing activity of antibodies against the Omicron variant of the virus was tested at T2 and T post-3D. 42.3% of FHM, 80,0% of FNO, and 90,0% of HW had anti-Omicron neutralizing antibodies at T post-3D. To get more insight into the breadth of antibody responses, we analyzed neutralizing capacity against BA.4/BA.5, BF.7, BQ.1, XBB.1.5 since also for the Omicron variants, different mutations have been reported especially for the spike protein. The memory T-cell response was lower in FHM than in FNO and HW cohorts. Data on breakthrough infections and deaths suggested that the positivity threshold of the test is protective after the third dose of the vaccine in all cohorts.ConclusionFHM have a relevant response to the BNT162b2 vaccine, with increasing antibody levels after the third dose coupled with, although low, a T-cell response. FHM need repeated vaccine doses to attain a protective immunological response.

Protein self-assembling nanoparticles (NPs) can be used as carriers for antigen delivery to increase vaccine immunogenicity. NPs mimic the majority of invading pathogens, inducing a robust adaptive immune response and long-lasting protective immunity. In this context, we investigated the potential of NPs of different sizes and shapes—ring-, rod-like, and spherical particles—as carriers for bacterial oligosaccharides by evaluating in murine models the role of these parameters on the immune response. Oligosaccharides from Neisseria meningitidis type W capsular polysaccharide were conjugated to ring-shape or nanotubes of engineered Pseudomonas aeruginosa Hemolysin-corregulated protein 1 (Hcp1cc) and to spherical Helicobacter pylori ferritin. Glycoconjugated NPs were characterized using advanced technologies such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Asymmetric Flow-Field Flow fractionation (AF4), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to verify their correct assembly, dimensions, and glycosylation degrees. Our results showed that spherical ferritin was able to induce the highest immune response in mice against the saccharide antigen compared to the other glycoconjugate NPs, with increased bactericidal activity compared to benchmark MenW-CRM197. We conclude that shape is a key attribute over size to be considered for glycoconjugate vaccine development.

The geochemical monitoring of volcanic activity today relies largely on remote sensing, but the combination of this approach together with soil gas monitoring, using the appropriate parameters, is still not widely used. The main purpose of this study was to correlate data from crater gas emissions with flank emissions of soil gases at Mt. Etna volcano from June 2006 to December 2020. Crater SO2 fluxes were measured from fixed stations around the volcano using the DOAS technique and applying a modeled clear-sky spectrum. The SO2/HCl ratio in the crater plume was measured with the OP-FTIR technique from a transportable instrument, using the sun as an IR source. Soil CO2 efflux coupled with the 220Rn/222Rn activity ratio in soil gases (named SGDI) were measured at a fixed monitoring site on the east flank of Etna. All signals acquired were subject both to spectral analysis and to filtering of the periodic signals discovered. All filtered signals revealed changes that were nicely correlated both with other geophysical signals and with volcanic eruptions during the study period. Time lags between parameters were explained in terms of different modes of magma migration and storage inside the volcano before eruptions. A comprehensive dynamic degassing model is presented that allows for a better understanding of magma dynamics in an open-conduit volcano.

The aim of this study was to describe the diagnosis and treatment of grade IV lateral patellar luxation (LPL) in two adult large breed dogs with complex femoral deformities using patient-specific three-dimensionally (3D) printed osteotomy guides and implants. Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained for virtual surgical planning (VSP) using computer-aided design (CAD) software, which allowed for 3D reconstruction and manipulation of the femoral deformities, providing a preoperative view of the correction. Of the two patients, one was affected bilaterally and the other unilaterally, but both dogs were from the same litter. Therefore, the healthy femur of the unilaterally affected patient was used as the physiological reference for the virtual surgical correction. Three distal femoral trapezoid osteotomies (DF-TO) followed by reduction and internal fixation with plates were performed using patient-specific 3D-printed osteotomy guides and implants. This type of osteotomy permitted correction of procurvatum in all the femurs to increase knee extension, raise the dog’s lumbar spine and correct the kyphosis. Preoperative, expected and postoperative femoral angles were compared to evaluate the efficacy of virtual surgical planning and the outcome of surgical correction. Radiographic follow-up, passive range of motion and functional recovery were recorded. There were no major complications requiring revision surgery. Significant clinical improvement was observed in both patients. This study suggests that the treatment used represents a viable surgical alternative to restore limb alignment in patients with complex femoral deformities.

The aim of the SIDDHARTA-2 experiment is to perform the first measurement ever of the width and shift induced by the strong interaction to the 2p→1s energy transition of kaonic deuterium. This ambitious goal implies a challenging task due to the very low X-ray yield of kaonic deuterium, which is why an accurate and thorough characterization of the experimental apparatus is mandatory before starting the data-taking campaign. Helium-4 is an excellent candidate for this characterization since it exhibits a high yield in particular for the 3d→2p transition, roughly 100 times greater than that of the kaonic deuterium. The ultimate goal of the work reported in this paper is to study the performances of the full experimental setup in view of the kaonic deuterium measurement. This is carried out by measuring the values of the shift and the width for the 3d→2p energy transition of kaonic helium-4, induced by the strong interaction. The values obtained for these quantities, for a total integrated luminosity of ∼31/pb, are ε2p=2.0±1.2(stat)±1.5(syst)eV and Γ2p=1.9±5.7(stat)±0.7(syst)eV. The results, compared to the value of the shift measured by the SIDDHARTA experiment ε2p=0±6(stat)±2(syst)eV, show a net enhancement of the resolution of the apparatus, providing strong evidence of the potential to perform the challenging measurement of the kaonic deuterium.

This paper describes the successes and failures after 4 years of continuous operation of a network of sensors, communicating nodes, and gateways deployed on the Etna Volcano in Sicily since 2019, including a period of Etna intense volcanic activity that occurred in 2021 and resulted in over 60 paroxysms. It documents how the installation of gateways at medium altitude allowed for data collection from sensors up to the summit craters. Most of the sensors left on the volcanic edifice during winters and during this period of intense volcanic activity were destroyed, but the whole gateway infrastructure remained fully operational, allowing for a very fruitful new field campaign two years later, in August 2023. Our experience has shown that the best strategy for IoT deployment on very active and/or high-altitude volcanoes like Etna is to permanently install gateways in areas where they are protected both from meteorological and volcanic hazards, that is mainly at the foot of the volcanic edifice, and to deploy temporary sensors and communicating nodes in the more exposed areas during field trips or in the summer season.

Kaonic atoms are an extremely efficient tool to investigate the strong interaction at the low energy Frontier, since they provide direct access to the K−N interaction at threshold, eliminating the necessity for extrapolation, unlike in the case of scattering experiments. During the 1970s and 1980s, extensive studies were performed on kaonic atoms spanning across a broad spectrum of elements in the periodic table, ranging from lithium to uranium. These measurements provided inputs and constraints for the theoretical description of the antikaon-nuclei interaction potential. Nevertheless, the existing data suffer from significant experimental uncertainties, and numerous measurements have been found to be inconsistent with more recent measurements that utilize advanced detector technology. Furthermore, there remain numerous transitions of kaonic atoms that have yet to be measured. For these reasons, a new era of kaonic atoms studies is mandatory. The DAΦNE electron-positron collider at the INFN Laboratory of Frascati (INFN-LNF) stands out as a unique source of low-energy kaons, having been utilized by Collaborations such as DEAR, SIDDHARTA, and AMADEUS for groundbreaking measurements of kaonic atoms and kaon-nuclei interactions. Presently, the SIDDHARTA-2 experiment is installed at DAΦNE, aiming to perform the first-ever measurement of the 2p → 1s x-ray transition in kaonic deuterium, a crucial step towards determining the isospin-dependent antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths. Based on the experience gained with the SIDDHARTA experiment, which performed the most precise measurement of the kaonic hydrogen 2p → 1s x-ray transition, the SIDDHARTA-2 setup is now fully equipped for the challenging kaonic deuterium measurement. In this paper, we present a comprehensive description of the SIDDHARTA-2 setup and of the first kaonic atoms measurements performed during the commissioning phase of the DAΦNE collider. We also outline a proposal for future measurements of kaonic atoms at DAΦNE beyond SIDDHARTA-2, which is intended to stimulate discussions within the broad scientific community performing research, directly or indirectly, related to this field.
